Black-and-white couple for fantasy-romance Scarlet Heart: Goryeo
by javabeans
How many different ways can Lee Jun-ki look ethereally beautiful in sageuk garb? After all the many historical projects he’s done thus far (King and the Clown, Iljimae, Arang and the Magistrate, Joseon Gunman, Scholar Who Walks the Night) you’d think he’d start repeating looks, but apparently when you’re Lee Jun-ki, you never run out of ways to be gorgeous.
There’s not a lot to say about these latest stills from SBS’s upcoming time-travel fantasy romance series Scarlet Heart: Goryeo, other than that I dearly wish the production would release more than two pictures at a time, which does little to satisfy my curiosity about the drama. The show stars IU as a modern-era woman who travels back to Goryeo times and gets entangled in lovelines with a host of Goryeo princes, in a story that sounds like a mix of Faith meets Outlander. The original Chinese series has already amassed a sizable fanbase, so the question is whether this version of Scarlet Heart will be able to attract the same kind of popularity and buzz.
Well, all I know is that I’m really ready for this next season in dramaland; things have felt like they’ve been in a slump the past few months, and I’m ready for the new crop to revitalize the scene. I almost fear that we’ll be drowning in too many shows in another month or two, but I’ll take that kind of deluge over drought any day. Glug glug.
Scarlet Heart: Ryeo also stars Kang Haneul, Hong Jong-hyun, Nam Joo-hyuk, Ji-soo, and Baekyun, and is directed by PD Kim Kyu-tae of It’s Okay, It’s Love. The drama will be a Monday-Tuesday series premiering on August 29 on SBS.

They probably released the stills because the drama is due for another update before it's airdate in August (instead of doing a blitz in-your-face update 2 weeks before the drama actually airs), and also because at the time of this post, it's actually IU's birthday right now in Korea and the production crew wanted to update her fans with a little something about what she's currently doing =)) Happy Birthday, IU ~!!

Lol what's so ethereal about LJK in that first pic, I don't think it looks nice at all? And Aug 29? Sigh we still have three months to endure...The long wait is the one of the negative points about post-production dramas. And I wish the production team can release like 2 teaser photos per week, would that be considered too much?

My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that the character has a nasty scar on his face thus the partial mask and hair are hiding it.

Lee Jun Ki can go no wrong in sageuk, but damn that hairstyle! Even Lee Min Ho has better hairstyle in Faith. Why they have to cover one eye? Why?
IU is beautiful.. no other words needed. I just hope she can do the character justice since it would be her first sageuk.

apparently the incorporation of more modern pieces in IU's costumes/accessories, is a conscious decision by the drama's costume department.

Iljimae is badass but Arang & the Magistrate is a better drama, for once he has a leading lady who's capable of shouldering equal weight in a scene. You get all the badass and endearing, along with the best chemistry he's ever had with an actress in anything.
Also I just couldn't like Park Shi-hoo in Iljimae, he irritated me no end with his cow-eyed martyr act. Arang had a far more interesting second lead.

Hi, Cocoboo...
I'm still getting around to watching TIME BETWEEN DOG AND WOLF, just to see LJK in modern threads. But I so love watching his martial arts scenes that I really prefer seeing him in sageuks. Then I don't have to worry about him bringing a sword to a gunfight. ;-)
Re: Iljimae -- I recently watched it and enjoyed it. Many fine actors in the supporting cast. Kim Roe-Ha was great as the hitman Sa-Chun. I loved his performance as a good guy in THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG.
Another favorite ahjussi is Ahn Kil-Kang as the fake monk who's always praying to "messy [instead of merciful] Buddha."
IMHO, Dahee Fanel's guest review of ILJIMAE was spot on. It triggered an comment by belleza that says it all in a nutshell: "Batman in hanbok." To which I add: meets MacGyver. He's over the top in a superhero way that I enjoyed. I'm not really into comic book heroes, but Iljimae floated my boat. And I loved the music.
I have to agree with pogo's comment above that ARANG AND THE MAGISTRATE is a better show. Not perfect, but LJK's restrained performance was my cup of tea. I loved the metaphysics and supporting cast. In fact, it was my first LJK vehicle. Love the range of characters he's played. I'm glad I saw him in ARANG before THE KING AND THE CLOWN, in which he virtually evanesced as the ethereal Gong-Gil. Downright stunning, and the OST is gorgeous. I mention this because ILJIMAE references this film, and you'll miss the in jokes otherwise.
Back to ILJIMAE: There's a nice parallel with the sword training philosophy in the drama BICHEONMU, which may be a standard-issue Kdrama trope. But what the heck -- it establishes who the good guys are, and I found one particular dialogue very touching.
Anyway, have fun... You may be able to squeeze in one of his shows before SCARLET HEART: GORYEO debuts. ;-)

Am so glad you enjoyed that clip.
The music, lyrics, and singing resonate powerfully with me.
As an American with Celts and vikings in her family tree, it tickles me no end. My ancestors were fearless warriors who knew they would be back to fight in the next lifetime -- and looked forward to it. Maybe that's why I enjoy watching sageuks so much. ;-)
Perhaps you've heard of a historical novel by Marion Zimmer Bradley entitled "The Mists of Avalon." It's a retelling of the Arthurian legend from the womens' points of view. It's also long, and aerobic to cart around. For me, an utterly compelling read. It was made into a movie with Anjelica Huston, but I far prefer to watch it unfold in my mind's eye...
After reading it, I happened across an import CD with the same title by Breton harpist Alan Stivell. I was slightly aware of his earlier work, so bought it sound unheard.
Alan Stivell - La Dame Du Lac [The Lady of the Lake, aka Morgan le Fay]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx1pnxL-Wlw
As I listened to it for the first time, the hair on the back of my neck stood up... and I had a strong sensation that the music was jogging something loose in my memory that was from very long ago, ancient even. I couldn't put my finger on it then, and still can't identify what it was, except perhaps an echo from a past life...
BTW, the rest of the album is first-rate.
And that's my inyeon story for today. ;-)

I watched THE KING AND THE CLOWN later on. LJK was insanely beautiful in that movie, but I couldn't get into the overall story. I might have to give it another shot.
You're right. I definitely have time to add Iljimae to my to-watch list before August comes around. I don't tend to watch too many sageuks at once (gets overwhelmed/overlapping) so I will start it soon. *excited* :D

Pleased to meet fellow Jun-Ki junkies. ;-)
Yeah, I loved that OTP in ARANG... and I like how the metaphysical twists worked out.
I am a sucker for inyeon every time...
Which is why THE KING AND THE CLOWN got me where I live.
With regard to karma and relationships that span incarnations: Years ago I had a teacher who stated something along the line of "Five hundred years [or was it lifetimes?] just to sit beside a stranger on a boat." I heard it through a translator as I don't understand Mandarin... so don't know if it might be a famous aphorism.
A while back on one of the Open Threads, someone kindly posted a link to the Fantastic Duo episode featuring the stunning rendition of "Fate" performed by Kyuhyun and Lee Sunhee. I dug around and found the entire clip, which blew my socks off even more when I learned that he sang the whole thing in the original key. The emotion conveyed by both singers made the song even more powerful.
[ENG SUB] 160424 FD - Kyuhyun Cut
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x46yzsu_eng-sub-160424-fd-kyuhyun-cut_creation
Also, in digging around on YouTube, I came across a couple of deleted scenes from TKATC that cast a new light on the acrobats' karmic relationship, including a different opening monologue that sounded Chaucerian.
Since then, I've also watched BUNGEE JUMPING OF THEIR OWN...
Anyway, looking forward to comparing notes with both of you when SCARLET HEART: GORYEO hits the airwaves, er, DB recaps. ;-)

he did like a sunny day, in literal meaning,
it's when Ruoxi interview him about what he like and dislike,
he indeed like as bright day and hate rain/cloud as I remember, or I remember it as the opposite
my original intention is how he prefer a bright clothes and always wear bright costume over the other princes, that's what I mean by sunny day and also the yellow robe (I don't want to put much spoiler)

As far as main characters I think you must be thinking of the 8th Prince. Or perhaps the 13th. Or maybe even the 10th Prince, the lightest of them all.
I didn't see the 4th Prince as cruel. Rather he was frustrated by the favoritism that always pushed him into the shadow of his less competent brothers. The political maneuvering he did was purely pragmatic. For all those who aspired to the throne it was either kill or be killed.
What made the romance between he and Ruoxi so compelling was that she was the one person who viewed him without prejudice. She was honest with him in ways others weren't. She struggled with their differences, but worked to accept him for who he was. And she kept him from becoming completely jaded.

For me he was cruel because I found his punishments too extreme. Of course, it was kill or be killed, but there are many ways to kill your enemies.
**SPOILER** The way Ruoxi's friend/maid died and the dog and pig stuff were too excessive. **SPOILER**
Tbh, I never understood why Ruoxi loved him. I preferred 8th & 14th princes. It may just be my prejudice, because I have disliked the 4th prince all along from previous dramas, movies, books etc. about him.

All your comments here are making me so excited about this show. I was too lazy to watch the original but read the synopsis instead, and Koala's recap on the ending. 4th Prince would be LJK's role, am I correct? Which means, he's going to portray a cold and arrogant prince, and that is exciting because LJK has always been cast as the impulsive, charming, wild, goodhearted hero in all the dramas I've watched him act in...it would be so interesting to see him act the cold prince for once. I read the story online and it sounds romantic and sad...I love this kind of story, and I really hope the remake is going to be good, because I know LJK will be awesome in his role. He always is.

Completely agree that the things you mentioned were horrible. But the thinking at the time was to make a strong statement with the method of execution, chosen for people who committed treason. The Forbidden City was huge and had so many factions. And China was always at war with someone. Either to expand its territories or to prevent previously conquered people from reclaiming sovereignty over their own territories. The only way an Emperor could be reasonably secure was through people having an abject fear of the consequences of defying him.
So the fact that his actions were so horrible was more of an occupational hazard than cruelty, per se. But I can only say this by looking at it through the cultural lens of that era.

I don't remember anything about the dog or pig. Maybe I blocked it out? ?
Let me know unless it's too spoilerish.

It's the renaming of the surnames of his rival princes after he became emperor, and is real history. I can't remember whether it was in BBJX, but was in other shows about Yongzheng. I doubt this will appear in the K-version since this is Chinese history and not Korean, and the K-version is about a real Korean prince/king Wang So. I expect the K-version to follow Korean history rather than Chinese history.

**SPOILER ALERT**
From what I read online, what she did led to the series of events that unfolded later, based on her pre knowledge of events, coming from the modern world. And she was in love with the other prince first, right, and warned him about 4th Prince, and when she fell in love with 4th Prince later, she had to live with her guilt...I wonder if the remake will stick to the original? And I loved the open ending.

on the other hand, I thought 8th prince is the one that too blinded by prejudice, wanted to prove himself badly to the kings bc his mom status.
I'd like to keep my pov in the era it happen bc 8th prince is virtuous by nature, he can just not doing all sort of that but just like every other prince that aim to the throne, they all thought no one will save other that doesn't support them.
4th prince is cruel by lot of movies, adaptation and etc, but in BBJX, he is shown as someone that always put as second every time bc he never preferred,

I started following Lee Jun-Ki on Instagram and the thing I have learned is ... he is even more delicate and ethereal looking in real life than he is in dramas. Incredibly the makeup and costuming actually TONE IT DOWN for these shows. He has taken early morning selfies where all it would take is a bit of point on his ears to pass as a real life elf.

I like the stills, hope to see a teaser soon to feel the drama's atmosphere. It's always the best to judge a drama.

The female lead will be the deciding factor, and they need cast some really gorgeous brothers for him, which is what kept me watching, The original was sad, but romantic, and the lead female made me love that drama. Wishing all the best for this remake.

I'm looking forward to another sageuk outing with LJK. It'll be interesting to see how his character is portrayed after watching Jang Hyuk's turn as the same historical figure in SHINE OR GO CRAZY. I haven't seen the original SCARLET HEART, so hope it transplants well to Goryeo.
Keeping my fingers crossed that Choi Young escorts Dr. Eun-Soo back to the beginning of the dynasty so our hero can ditch the mask. -- And even if he doesn't, I know the fisticuffs and swordfights will be just dandy.

I looove this movie. But Kang Dong Won had better hairstyle in Duelist than Lee Jun Ki here (plus it was his real hair, he let it grow for the movie *-*)

DF released all eps of Bu Bu Jing Xin (aka Scarlet Heart) and I started watching it yesterday. I am not at all familiar with any of the Chinese actors, so every time the 8th prince showed up I was like.. Ok that is Kang Ha-Neul, when the 4th showed up - Lee Jun-ki... and then 14th - Ji-soo.. until I worked myself up into a frenzy thinking why is Scarlet Hearty: Ryeo premiering so late!!

I dunno. I'm wary of these harem stories drama adaptation nowadays. Well, I'm adverse to harem stories in general. It reminds me of my teenage years of reading shoujo manga fluff and maybe I've outgrown that. Plus. IU as the heroine doesn't strike my fancy. I don't think she's outstanding in anything she was in. Didn't mean to be a Debbie Downer though. The production idea behind this is actually really interesting. Th collaboration between China and Korea entertainment-wise has really amped up rapidly over the course of the past four years.

They both look gorgeous, just a little mismatched. Prolly because IU looks like a child in comparison to Jun Ki. Not saying the age gap is bad, that's how it was in the original drama anyways. Since the time period lasted for several years to decades. I love IU too much to not support her on this one. I just hope that this will be a success, that she will be able to deliver as Jun Ki is absolutely good when it comes to Sageuk, no doubt. I'm not sure how she's going to fair in this drama with the experience she's had so far. I haven't seen too many Korean remake that really succeeded. The wait is making me anxious and all.

On the other hand, I should also be concerned about her onscreen chemistry with the other actors like KHN. I don't have issues with the younger actors, she's shippable with younger guys. xD

Well today is a good day as any to delurk
. Lee Junki has his ageless good looks to compensate any bad wigs, or hairstyles though the one he's sporting right now is waaaay better than his evil twin in the long black wig in the Scholar who walks the night. In fact I think I just fell drunk in love with him again in that picture.
Basically to sum up my position in the for and against camp for the picture above: Lee Junki can wear any hairstyle and I'd still find him beautiful. Period.

Gosh 2 measly photos. We need more!
Lee Jun Ki looks handsome and mysterious, yeahhh. Can't wait to see him in another drama. I liked IU ever since seeing her in Producers. I don't really see them looking that great together, but I hope the drama can change my mind. I felt this way with LJK and Lee Yoo Bi in Scholar Who Walks the Night too.

Mix of Faith and Outlander? Faith is Korean Outlander. If Faith creators didn´t base it on Outlander books, someone must have read it to them during hypnosis :).
