Yuri offered lead in castaway romance drama Gaia

Hm, so it’s Girls Generation idol Yuri who’s up to star in MBC’s castaway youth romance drama Gaia, which earlier reported that it was considering Kang Haneul (Misaeng) to headline. It’s not the casting I would have asked for, but I’m going to try to look on the bright side of things, because we have to.

The premise is an interesting one: A popular idol star with a prickly personality (our hero) and an ordinary heroine get marooned on an island after their plane crashes on it. The recent announcements of the drama don’t describe the plot further, but there are a handful of reports from last year naming Song Ji-nah as the writer (Healer, Faith, Story of a Man), and that the other passengers on the plane include the rest of the boy band, a girl group, managers, bodyguards, reporters, and flight attendants.

Because that information isn’t in the newest releases, I’m unclear as to whether things have changed since then, or whether it’s all still relevant. Take it with the customary grain of salt, basically. If Song Ji-nah is in fact attached, I’d definitely be interested, since she’s written some of my favorite shows and has a strong track record that includes some pretty legendary titles (Sandglass, for one) as well as fan favorites (Healer-ya!).

Kang Haneul has yet to confirm, and Yuri is reportedly considering the offer. I definitely prefer his acting to hers, but I’ll give her some credit after watching Neighborhood Hero and liking her easygoing girl-next-door appeal there. She didn’t have a lot to do in that role, but hey, I’ve been turned off by less, and I’d even gone into the show with a negative opinion of her acting after Fashion King. And I can see the thinking in pursuing her for the role, since Gaia will be a Korean-Chinese co-production that will film in China. Gotta know your market.

Gaia has attached Angry Mom’s director, Choi Byung-gil, and will take up the post-Monster timeslot on Mondays and Tuesdays later this year.

One question: Has Yuri improved? I only have bad memories of her from Fashion King

She's the same! She hasn't improved one bit, I watched Neighbourhood Hero and cringed so much whenever she was onscreen.

She's a sweet and gorgeous woman but girl needs to work on her acting.

Yeah, me too.
I even wonder what the hell is her role in that drama? I think Lee Soohyuk's character can survive without her.
She's not even as good as Sooyoung who practically debuted in acting after her and Yoona(damn, this one that's never improving after years). She still needs lot of practice.
But just like javabeans said, if Song Jinah is writing, I'm in.

Wrong SNSD member to be courting for a Big 3 drama lead (Sooyoung is 1000x better) but then standards for idols who act are so low that literally her managing to not flub her lines will be considered a thespian triumph.

SY will have a drama with Seo In Guk right? If true, glad that I can see her on screen back, even it is not from Big 3.

Even the production wants to court an idol, at least find someone who can act especially for the main lead. Eun Ji for example is a better choice.

Not necessarily prettier in the eyes of Korea, but more "womanly."

Yoona is like 3rd or 4th most attractive.

NOOOOOO, her acting is the worst out of all the SNSD actresses.

I would rather much prefer Sooyoung, heck even Yoona since she was decent in her last kdrama.

I would want Sooyoung but she looks like she's in her early 30s so she wouldn't visually suit with Kang Haneul at all.

But Yuri??? I'm so upset.

Re: your first sentence - that crown used to belong to Jessica... XD

maybe they're going for a casting that needed a sense of sexiness from the character, hence Yuri. I'd like to say, why an idol again? but, we all know the answer to that...

they could've gotten Seolhyun fro AOA (I do like her though). Would that be a better choice??? All I can do is sigh.

Seolhyun is even worse than Yuri, she always looks like she can't make facial expressions because she's too careful of how her face will look. She should stick to taking pics, that is all she good for.

This is why some people don't like kdrama, because of comments like yours that make it seem as if "visuals" are all anyone cares about in kdrama.

In evaluating whether someone is lead actor material, how about looking at whether their acting instead of their "visuals"? A novel thought, I know!

Sigh I tend to avoid dramas with idols as the leads like the plague... I'm still mad that I won't be able to watch Entertainer (sobs my Ji Sung) and Beast's Beauty (sobs Namgoong Min) and when I finally found another drama which has a premise that I really like...this happens... :(
(But again some idols just impress me with their acting eg D.O, Lee Joon etc but still! D:)

I think you just dislike bad actors/actresses on youe screen. Nothing immediately to do with idols.

I've found it a bit exasperating when people keep ragging on idol-actors when really, we should just be ragging on people who can't do what they're paid to do for well, idol or not.

I think sometimes people just find it unfair that idols seem to be able to get leading roles easily, even when they can't act decently yet, while actors have to start from really minor roles and work their way up.

I'm interested in the plot, very interested in KHN's next project and also an SM artist stan (SNSD is my bias girl group). However, I think this will damage Yuri's acting rep rather than help her or the show. I haven't seen her act yet but I doubt she's ready for the level I've come to expect from Haneul. I think acting with him would expose any weaknesses she may have. I hope casting works out for both of them, even if one has to turn it down. Hwaiting Yuri and Haneul!

Kang Haneul is a very talented actor, he deserves to be in a good drama (with good script – not yet convinced that's gonna happen here) with a solid cast, including his co-lead. I can't think of an idol-acress that would fit that description for me on the top of my head (I'm probably forgetting someone).

If he can't get that... I think he'd be better off not taking this drama or decamping to film-land where his talent will be put to use more wisely.

His project choices seem to be pretty mixed so far though (I'm guessing because he can't be that choosy yet, sadly, because I find that means his talent is being wasted).

forget the acting issue. which one of these potential leads are supposed to bring the viewers in? this seems like such an odd combination for a big three drama.

usually, if one lead has yet to lead a drama they match them with someone who already has proven they can bring in viewers, cable somethings has exceptions. there's a reason the reply alum all have very seasoned co stars in their comeback projects.

This just isn't a strong cast. I don't think casting Yuri will give them any advantage in the Chinese market too. And with a plot so... extraordinary, this seems more like a webdrama really.

Yeah, I love Kang Ha-nuel and I think he is ready for and deserves the role, but he needs to be paired with another popular up-and-comer that will bring in the ratings, not an idol like Yuri who doesn't have the acting chops to carry the role.

I think sometimes top star actor or more experience actor doesn't guaranteed the drama do well whether in rating & bring more in viewer. For example Hyun Bin and Han Ji- min in Hyde, Jekyll & Me. It supposed to be a great comeback drama for Hyun Bin since discharged from army and of course his fan anticipate a lot of the drama and Han Ji min returned to drama since successful of Rooftop Prince but it doesn't seem that way. The drama just so-so according to me. Or perhaps the drama aired on wrong timing and many similarities with Kill Me Heal Me.
Casting female idol as a female lead also becoming issue. I remembered netizen against Eunji & Hyeri as a lead in Reply 97&88 especially Hyeri gets so much hate for her casting before but her character and drama got so much loved & praised after that. But that only cable drama. For Public drama, Sooyoung cast as female lead in spring day also get hated first by netizen but later she was praised as the drama began aired. So me as a viewer and fan of drama, should be positive over female idol casting with more experience actor. i think this is the way the female idols learning and gain experience to become a successful actor in the future. we don't know their potential yet but see what happened to Hyeri, Hwang Jung Eum (former idol SUGAR) Sung Yuri (former idol FINKL), Yoon Eun Hye (former idol BabyVox), Eugene (Former idol SES) & Jung Ryeo woon (former idol CHAKRA).They established their name as great actor especially Hwang Jung Eum.

I want to share my personal opinion regarding Yuri acting after watching fashion king, No breathing and Local Hero. Honestly, fashion king is not her best acting yet it is not too worse.
There is several parts or scenes that yuri did better despite it is her debut drama. For example deep kissing scene with Lee Jae hoon as well as the scene where she slap Yoo ah In on the face. the scenes leave quite impression for me. Overall, FK is not a drama that show yuri potential to the max because the drama itself has many lacking especially poor story line & plot, poor directing even though they have great actors such as YAI & LJH.
NB Movie-Not many scene yuri characters involved in this movie because they focused much on the two leading man. Despite yuri bad acting, but her did well in audition scene. her character just OK for me.
LH-this drama showed the improvement in Yuri acting than the previous two. from reading her line, facial expression etc. i was fooled by one one teaser where Yuri in white dress is fighting & kicking like bad ass and thought she played the characters that suit her but it turned out she just played a writer. But overall, i can see the improvement despite it is just minor role. Her chemistry with Lee Soo Hyuk & President Hwang also great. Lastly, i heard she is currently acting in web drama. Not a fan of web drama. But i give a try. i think this drama is a good things to see her acting improvement SINCE this is her first Main Character meaning there is more scene on HER...and the focus is only HER and her main male lead.
And for upcoming drama, don't know whether she will play Lead or Second Lead. But since it is produce by SM&CC, i think she will get major role. I will anticipate this drama since i love the script writer previous work, HEALER.

Seriously, the lack of (well known) actresses in the late 80's-early 90's age range atm basically guarantees that girl group members will be trying to transition into acting (esp the older gen members who are around this age range)

It's either them or castings of VERY young actresses (aka KYJ, KSH, KSR) which has been happening and or Noona romances. Which I feel was the rage a few years ago but not atm.

Anyway, my point is that this casting choice doesn't surprise me. Plus I've never found Yuri's acting amazing but she definitely has a kind of appeal--essentially, I don't hate her so that's saying a lot. I'm all for KHN and I'll be on board if both of them signs on.

I love the writer on this project (Story of a Man, Healer, etc.) so I have hope for the project. If she does take the lead hopefully she is able to carry the show.

i actually like watching her. fashion king was pretty bad for everybody involved (and it made me HATE shin se-kyung so much), but she was all right in neighborhood hero. i think she has a natural, easy aura and honestly, has the potential to be a lot better than yoona. and she has that something that pulls you in and makes you want to watch her—at least for me.

and given that the writer is song ji-nah, wouldn't it be a major coup for yuri if she lands the role? and kang ha-neul as the male lead is pretty solid too.

So from the comments on here I gather that she is an idol, turned bad idol actress? I had a little interest in the premise of this drama, but now with no interesting casting, and also with the term " youth romance" used which means the story will be so limited, I will pass on checking out this show.

Sigh... She annoyed me so much in Neighborhood Hero. And she was so bland, which is almost worse than being an awful actor. She wasn't *that* bad in it, but she definitely isn't a good actress either and I just wish they'd try out a new actress instead of an idol. Lately it seems to be mostly young actors, not actresses, getting a shot at lead roles. I wonder why that is? Not that I'm complaining about the many new male faces in dramaland ha, would just be nice to see some new female faces too.

The premise of this drama doesn't really sound fit for a full-length one. I wonder how the plot would play out and am a bit worried it's just gonna be a romance running in circles. It does sound somewhat intriguing though, so I might give it a chance, if Yuri doesn't end up as a main lead.
