News bites: April 30, 2016

Seo Kang-joon, Ji Jin-hee

  • Seo Kang-joon (Cheese in the Trap) is set to make a special cameo appearance on SBS’s showbiz drama Entertainer. Seo made a surprise cameo appearance in support of his fellow 5urprise member Gong Myung, who plays the guitarist in the band. Seo will appear as Gong’s rival from Juilliard, and the two friends will showcase their musical talent together in the upcoming episode. You can catch Seo Kang-joon’s cameo appearance by tuning in on May 11. [Osen]
  • Ji Jin-hee (I Have a Lover) is confirmed to play the lead in the upcoming SBS series Second Love, which is still courting Kim Hee-ae to headline. Kim is said to be considering the part favorably. This will be Ji Jin-hee’s second project with PD Choi Young-hoon, whom he worked with previously on Warm Words. Ji will play a civil servant who works at city hall, and enters into a bickering romantic relationship with a PD at a local broadcasting station. The series is a remake of a popular Japanese drama about a romance that blossoms between a fortysomething man and woman. Second Love is scheduled to air in July. [Dailian]

  • Song Il-kook, Yoon Hae-young

  • From Superman to Broadway — Song Il-kook (Jang Young-shil) will set his foot on stage for the very first time in the upcoming musical Broadway 42nd Street. For his musical debut, Song will follow in the famous footsteps of Jerry Orbach in his portrayal of the famed Broadway director Julian Marsh. Song said via his agency, “Being in a Broadway musical has been a longtime dream of mine. I’m so happy and excited to have been given the chance to realize my dream in the famed musical Broadway 42nd Street. I’m practicing day and night for my role, as not to disappoint the audience.” Song is set to tap dance his way onto the stage on June 23. [Star News]
  • The cast list for highly anticipated summer drama Doctors keeps on growing. Yoon Hae-young (Prime Minister and I) has been confirmed to play Lee Sung-kyung’s mother. Yoon’s upcoming role is described to be quite different from her character in Prime Minister and I; this time she will portray a perfect façade to the world to hide the complexity of her true nature. Doctors is set to air on Mondays and Tuesdays in June. [Sports DongA]

  • Sohn Hyun-joo, Kim Dong-wook

  • Veteran actor Sohn Hyun-joo (Three Days) confirms his next project in PD Kim Bong-han’s (The Hero) upcoming movie, A Common Man (a working title). The movie is about one cop’s struggle to save his family from the danger they’ve fallen into after he’s framed for a crime he didn’t commit. Known for the grittier roles he’s portrayed in the suspense thriller genre, Sohn aims to transform his current image as the “king of thrillers” to a gentler image as the “king of humanism” with his new project. Filming for A Common Man is slated to begin sometime in August. [Sports Chosun]
  • Actor Kim Dong-wook (Maids) joins the upcoming two-part fantasy saga With the Gods as its newest cast member. The film is an adaptation of writer Joo Ho-min’s popular webtoon of the same name, about a fantastical world with an afterlife filled with grim reapers and gods who pass judgment on the fate of human lives in the new realm. Kim will play the younger brother to Cha Tae-hyun’s character (The Producers), an average schmo who suddenly finds himself facing the fate of his existence in the afterlife. The filming for Cha Tae-hyun’s judgment day will begin in May. [Osen]

  • Kim Eui-sung, Kang Ki-young, Heo Jung-do

  • More casting alerts! Veteran actor Kim Eui-sung (Six Flying Dragons), and character actors Heo Jung-do (Mrs. Cop) and Kang Ki-young (the smart-mouthed sous chef in Oh My Ghostess) have been confirmed to join MBC’s upcoming drama W. With a solid production team led by screenwriter Song Jae-jung (Queen Inhyun’s Man) and PD Jung Dae-yoon (She Was Pretty), the series will also be Han Hyo-joo’s return to the small screen after a six-year hiatus. Not much has been revealed about the drama yet, but with such a solid cast and production team, I’ll be sure to check it out when it begins airing this summer. [Joongang Ilbo]
  • MBC’s Flower in Prison began its epic saga with a special preview episode on April 27. Powerhouse sageuk writer PD Lee Byung-hoon (Dong Yi, Yi San, Dae Jang Geum) returns with the drama about the Joseon-era legal system and the people who fight on behalf of the helpless. Go Soo (Empire of Gold), Jin Se-yeon (Doctor Stranger), and Jung Jun-ho (Sweet Savage Family) lead the cast. Flower in Prison airs Saturdays and Sundays and premieres today. [Ten Asia]

LOL. Is it a given Seo Kang Joon will play the geeeenius pianist again?
Or now he will become guitarist? Hope he doesn't make me allergic to guitar too.

Ha ha ha.

I foresee Seo Kang-joon playing "Fur Elise" on the guitar fifty times in a five minute montage, and all the women faint.

The question is, will he be able to complete his five-minute montage without flying into a rage and delivering a flying kick at the offensive guitar?

The one who play guitar is his bandmate right? So maybe we'll get the Seo Kangjun The Pianist instead :)

0

It's literally a show about music...
Logically, why wouldn't they have him play piano?

There's a lot of folks who don't like him/are tired of him because of his piano-playing character in Cheese in the Trap.

I'm tired of all the actors except PHJ getting hate for it. Can't have Kim Go Eun in a photoshoot or Seo Kang Joon in a cameo without people trashing them. And I thought they were excellent in their roles, so the possibility of their future work being affected is even more tiring.

Most of people haven't trashing them but the director of CITT :)

If it being affected in no way he got another 'lead' role in upcoming drama, industry still love him :)

+1 with you Zoe (and Yuki below)

@Chelsea: People aren't trashing him but the director? But why do you say then: "Bann Seo Kanjung featuring piano in any kdrama, tvm"?

You're not talking about the director here, you're talking about an actor and advocating he shouldn't get roles. To me that reads like you putting the blame on him with what happened with CITT, not the director. (And if his agency had anything to do with it, it's still not his fault – he's a pawn in the hands of entertainment biz here.)

0

@Alua I don't like the Seo Kangjun+piano combination. I'm no hater, his acting is great and his puppy eyes are my favorite. I can say the same that I don't like Lee Minho in school uniform again.

And yeah, so far netizen is in Seo Kangjun side and against the PD act so don't need so defense~

0

I can't understand it. He was gorgeous in every sense in CITT, charming, acting well and looking incredibly handsome as he is...I get that the show went down a path that people did not like, but that was not Seo Kang Joon's fault.
From my side, he is more than welcome in any other show he wants to appear. I am missing him already and want him back in dramaland asap (as main lead this time, please) :D

Okay...

The first second one is okay... but he literally bring his piano in every show I watch. Cunning Single Lady, Roommate, Cheese in The Trap.

What are you talking about? The character is supposed to be a 40-something-year-old, and he is 40-something years old (43 according to Asianwiki). :-/

Kim Eui Sung, within a year he'll have done 2 dramas already ,and he hadn't done one in a long long time. Wow, this must be a sign that filming conditions and scripts for dramas have improved so considerably films actors don't mind starring in the drama world.

Loved the guy as Poeun in SFD and he played the creeptastic Han Myung Hoe in The Face Reader. He was so scary there.

I don't understand. Second Love is about a younger man and an older woman, not two people the same age. Is there a Second Love I don't know about.

I think they meant "Second To Last Love," which is about romance between two older people (45 and 50). Because Second Love is neither popular nor about an older couple.

Lol! Aww,I find it sad that that CITT has put people of pianos and even the actor himself as I loved the earnestness of his character and loved his scenes and the natural chemistry he had with KGE and everyone including(Yoo Jung) even if I leaned more towards JungSeol after more character exploration, growth and healing,of course. It was quite unfortunate his screentime was at the detriment of other characters and ended up causing so much aversion. I was very impressed with his piano playing so it wasn't overkill for me,just could have been shorter and I look forward to seeing him in other projects.

The plot of Son Hyun-Joo's new movie sounds a lot like The Chaser. But I guess that's all well and good, his character in The Chaser was one of the most compelling, so I'm sure he will nail it.

Wow, Song Il-Gook is going to do a musical... does anyone know if he can sing?

I see certain someone's stans didn't waste time in coming here with their decade old rehashed jokes.

I hope JJH and KHA's drama is good (if she accepts), the plot sounds fresh and is nice to have an older-than-average couple in the midst of this age-gap trend.

I find myself more and more interested in W. I wonder how writer Song Jae Jung will fare in public broadcast after doing her last two dramas on cable. Lately I've been feeling like tvn tries too hard to be fresh and innovative and their shows end up not feeling authentic sometimes (not saying that public broadcast doesn't have its downsides, mind)

I don’t understand why people keep bringing up CiTT. What happened in that show was clearly the writer and PD's work. SKJ was an actor doing his job. If he had so much influence, enough to sway a PD and writer into making him lead, he would have been cast as the lead to begin with.

So to all the people above, saying sarcastic things about him: if you have grown to dislike him so much, don't read news about him and don't watch shows he's in. Easy enough solution and much better than being negative about someone you don't even know.

Such a let down with the casting of Ji Jin Hee, I do like him but he doesn't just fit the image of the character especially after seeing Nakai Kiichi's portrayal. I still wish they would have gone for a completely different actor.
