Lee Soo-hyuk up for second lead in Lucky Romance
by javabeans
Aw, it’s not a lead role, but I do think I’d like to see Lee Soo-hyuk joining the MBC romantic-comedy series Lucky Romance, since I tend to like him best in supporting roles anyway — his most recent turn in OCN’s comic action-thriller Neighborhood Hero was super endearing, plus he made an unhinged vampire compelling in Scholar Who Walks the Night, so I’m ready to see him back on my screen.
He’s reportedly in talks to finalize casting with the production, and would play a tennis player who gets caught up in a love triangle with our leads, Hwang Jung-eum (She Was Pretty) and Ryu Joon-yeol (Answer Me 1988). His character has a prior connection to the fortune-telling-obsessed heroine, who was his childhood first love, while Ryu plays the no-nonsense cheapskate hero.
In the original webtoon, a dire fortune convinces the heroine that she must seduce the hero (or another man born in the year of the tiger) in order to pre-empt the dark fate heading her way. Meanwhile, he finds her strange and off-putting and can’t relate to her superstitious beliefs, being strictly science- and logic-based (to a fault). I’m not sure how much of the original story will be translated into the adaptation, but it’s a kooky setup, and one I hope they keep intact for the show.
Lucky Romance has also just added musical actor Jung Sang-hoon, whom you may recognize from Youths Over Flowers in Iceland. (They weren’t on the same season, but I do enjoy the Youths connection, with Ryu Joon-yeol in the cast of the Africa season.) In the drama, Jung will play Ryu’s close hyung and business partner, which seems right up his alley — he really does have that warm friendly brother vibe, and I can see him being an enjoyable addition.
Lucky Romance follows Goodbye Mr. Black and premieres in May.

He's a much better actor than people think, given his model-actor image. I hope this role allows him to flex those acting chops some more, but I like that he's taking on a variety of roles and not just sticking to the ones he looks perfect for.
(but damn, I am still not over the sight of him in proper hair+costume for SWWTN, I think we all had a collective swoon just then)

Auw I am happy for him. SWWTN was not a hit, but glad that some of the casts continuously receiving offers like LSH, JHJ, KSE and even LJK himself.
As much as I adore LSH, I think I am not ready yet to see him as a lead. He probably need to do supporting roles first, and gain experience after that he can be a great actor.

There are some actors who needs to build their acting chop by doing supporting roles first, and some other was born with talent and can act naturally. I don't watch Reply but did watch some clips. IMO, RJY has a great acting talent.
Not disregarding LSH at all, I am proud of him as he is one of those model turn to actor who Is good. He really work hard :)

Hm, objectively I might say the same, but I still am OK with this choice. I think LSH has had way more exposure, so one might argue he deserves a lead role more, but RJY won me over so completely in Reply that I'm ready for him to be lead (but for real this time. If I have to cry over his character's ending again, believe you me, words will be HAD). Whereas I like LSH well enough, but I don't know if he could carry a whole show. Plus, I can't see him with HJE. Maybe i'll watch if he does a noona romance, or other beta-male type character someday.

I dunno, I'd like to see him as the protagonist. Maybe in something short for now. A 2-episode thing or something.

Come on. Lets be realistic about Taecyeon... He still needs to dig deep deep deep deep deep deep deep DEEEPPPPPPPPPPPPPP down inside for his acting skills. Its there, we've seen really really really really tiny glimpses of it. But it is there.

Hahahahahaha! As I read this, I keep hearing the song "how deep is your love". Well I liked Taeceyon in Dream High so theres that for acting taste. Hee!

Sigh. Everything about the premise and the cast makes me want to watch, except Hwang Jung-eum; the character seems the kind to bring out the worst of her histrionics. I fear she will play a loon rather than simply a quirky woman with a single-minded purpose. But then, Ryu Joon-yeol and Lee Soo-hyuk... Still unsure what to do about this one...

He was a gorgeous Gwi, but I didn't think as much of his acting as others did, but he was adorkable in Neighborhood Hero. I think it's a good idea to do as many different kinds of roles as he can, and just take it as a continuous acting class as he works on his craft. It's a lot safer to do that in a 2nd lead role. I think this has a lot of potential though we don't know that much about his character from the description.
Has he done military srv yet? He has worked non-stop it seems trying to build a resume, and I'm wondering if he's coming up on his military srv.

I'm starting to get just a little tired of this guy. He has been in back to back dramas: High School King of Savvy, Valid Love, Scholar Who Walks the Night, and Neighborhood Hero. The parts have been real different but it's easier to look at a role on its own when you're not comparing the character to one he played just a couple weeks previously.

Omg, yay! I'm sorry to say but he kicked Sung Joon out of his top spot in the model—>actor crew a long time ago for me, lmao. I love this guy and miss him. I should probably watch Scholar but I don't think I will finish it and I didn't watch Local Hero and don't know if I will. I'm happy he works so much, actually. He is so consistent(ly working) and takes on such a variety of roles and it really shows in a good way. Really proud of his growth.
ANNNNNND *cryyy*, if Lee Chung Ah also signs on it'll be a reunionnn and by reunion I mean they should totally make us see what would have happened at the end of High School King of Savvy with them in this drama. IDC, IDC. I can dream.

I'll say something about Jung Sang-hoon.
I watched the Iceland series, which was my introduction to him. And, then, I watched that SNL skit he did with Zico, Jung & Co, 2 days ago. Man, he's so good. That skit was hilarious. :D

Hmm, I enjoy both Ryu Joonyeol's and Hwang Jungeum's acting, but so far I'm not impressed with Lee Soohyuk's. But then again I have never enjoyed any of the work he's involved with. Runway Cop was not my cup of tea, SWWTN put me to sleep, etc...

I only watched him in High School King of Savvy and then, later, in Valid Love. I wasn't impressed at all with his acting in the former, but I definitely thought his acting in Valid Love was en pointe. He seemed to shed his pretty boy image in Valid Love, and went pretty deep into his character. Gave me new respect for him.

"...OCN’s 'comic action-thriller' Neighborhood Hero..."
Is that what that was?
I kept hoping, so kept watching. Around episode 6, I kept saying "I should drop this...but it's 6 HOURS already in and I'm a little OCD. It's got to get better, right?" Lather, rinse, force myself to get through another episode.
Everything about the premise appealed to me and DramaFever kept running a 30 second promo of The Big Bad that showed he was so intimidating that he was chilling except...
he...
was...
not.
This thing meandered all over the place. I'm still deciding which spot to rank it on my list between Hidden Identity and my unfortunate watching of My Unfortunate Boyfriend.
Hey, do you think Drama Beans would accept a minion who only wrote reviews that point out everything wrong with a show?
