Descended From the Sun: Episode 12

Regardless of how a person sees themselves, there always comes a time when you have to make a choice — stick to what you should do, or take a risk and do what you know is right? It’s an easy decision for some, and when lives are on the line, not taking a stand can be the most dangerous choice of all.
EPISODE 12 RECAP
Dae-young knows, when he sees that Shi-jin has left behind his uniform and dog tags, that he’s gone off on his own. Meanwhile Shi-jin calls the Abu Dhabi prince’s man and calls in his second favor — he needs a helicopter.
Dae-young goes to see Myung-joo, and she’s surprised to see him in civilian clothing. He tells her that nobody can find Shi-jin or Mo-yeon, but they correctly assume that Mo-yeon’s been kidnapped and Shi-jin has gone off on a “solo operation.”
He reminds her of her comment that his gift was on the way, and asks if he can collect it now. He gives her a gentle kiss on the forehead, then hands her his dog tags. She knows that this means he’s going to help his friend, but all she says is for him to come back safely.
Dae-young recruits three other soldiers for what he calls Unauthorized Black Operation, informing them that this will be done out of uniform, and there’s a high chance they may not come back alive. He offers them a chance to bow out now, but none of them take him up on it. Team Alpha is back.
Shi-jin gets to Argus’s home base alone and slips inside, taking out the guards who spot him and bypassing the surveillance cameras. He’s surprised when the first people he sees are a roomful of children, but he motions to them to stay quiet and keeps moving.
Argus gets confirmation that the deal with North Uruk has gone through, and Mo-yeon watches as he retrieves the diamonds from his safe. He tells his men to “dump everything that doesn’t fit in the suitcase,” meaning the children, but Shi-jin neatly dispatches the goons who come to dispose of them.
One soldier uses a child as hostage, but just as he’s about to shoot Shi-jin, another shot is fired and the goon drops dead. It’s Dae-young and his men, and Shi-jin’s look of shock is priceless. Dae-young asks what he’s doing here all alone raising his hands to the enemy: “I was intimidated thinking I was alone. Now I’m welcoming my friends with open arms.” Ha.
Shi-jin resumes his place as Alpha Team Big Boss, and orders two of the soldiers to get the children out immediately. Dae-young and the fourth soldier (call name Snoopy) are to come with him to rescue the hostage.
The chief of security isn’t happy to hear that Lieutenant General Yoon let Alpha Team go off on their own, but Yoon firmly defends his men. The chief is worried that their operation could get in the way of the CIA’s operation going on at the same time, and wants to let them handle the hostage rescue as well.
But Yoon takes offense when he starts talking about press control, and tells him that he doesn’t care about politics or the media. He cares about his men, who are willing to give their lives to carry out their duty for a country that won’t even recognize their sacrifice. He will take responsibility for whatever happens.
Everyone descends on Myung-joo to find out where Mo-yeon and the soldiers went. She just tells them that she’ll be rescued no matter what it takes, and that they don’t want to know what that means.
Shi-jin and his men wait until Argus takes Mo-yeon out of the building, heading towards their agreed-upon meeting place. He tells Argus that he’s secured a retreat, and asks for the hostage to be released. But the moment he sees Mo-yeon with a cut on her lip, he loses his calm demeanor and raises his gun…
… but then he realizes that Mo-yeon has explosives strapped to her body and Argus is holding the trigger, and Shi-jin orders his men to stand down. The helicopter shows up right on time and Shi-jin has leverage again, and he tells Argus to let Mo-yeon go or his ride won’t land.
Argus is at a disadvantage when he doesn’t understand Korean, and he points his gun at Mo-yeon’s head when she snarks that Shi-jin and his men are discussing the weather. Shi-jin shoots the gun away, admitting that yeah, he’s probably crazy to do that, “So don’t scare her, don’t touch her, and don’t talk to her.”
He offers himself as hostage instead, but Argus is happy with the pretty lady accompanying him. Snoopy finally sees something important — the transmitter on Mo-yeon’s shoulder. If they can disable it, they disable the remote that Argus is holding.
Shi-jin lowers his gun and speaks directly to Mo-yeon, apologizing for being so late. He tells her to stand still, and asks if she trusts him. “Don’t you dare move.” Then he points his gun straight at her, and fires.
It’s a perfect hit, and the remote detonator is disabled. All hell breaks loose as Dae-young starts to fire on Argus’s men through a window, and soon they’re all down, including Argus himself.
The explosives strapped to Mo-yeon are still live however, and on a countdown. Snoopy works quickly to disable them, while Shi-jin tries to distract Mo-yeon. He reminds her of his joking about the land mine, when she’d told him to bring an expert — well, Snoopy is the expert.
Sure enough, they get the vest off her with thirty seconds to spare… but Snoopy couldn’t disarm the bomb. He flings the vest as far as he can while Shi-jin shields Mo-yeon, creating an impressive boom. But before they can even recover from it, Shi-jin’s man alerts him that Argus isn’t dead, and he’s reaching for his gun.
Shi-jin only has time to fling himself between Argus and Mo-yeon, and pushes her to the floor. Still lying there, he covers Mo-yeon’s eyes, telling her to forget what’s about to happen. He doesn’t stop shooting until Argus is dead.
They use the helicopter to fly back to the base, and Shi-jin reports to Lieutenant General Yoon that the hostage is safe and the target is dead. Yoon informs him that there will be no reward, but also no punishment.
This makes the chief of security angry again, and he threatens to make an official report that Yoon ordered this operation. Yoon agrees that he should do just that, but the chief of security’s smug satisfaction is wiped away when the President arrives.
He’s quick to tell the President that he opposed this whole thing, and requests that Lieutenant General Yoon be punished. Yoon agrees to take full responsibility, but the President disagrees. Why should he be punished for a successful rescue mission?
Despite still being weak, Myung-joo runs out of her hospital room when she hears the helicopter land on base. She’s caught when she stumbles on the stairs by Dae-young, safe and sound.
Mo-yeon finds Shi-jin sitting alone looking at an old, worn photo. He sets it on fire, sadly watching it burn.
Mo-yeon does have a slight gunshot wound on her shoulder, which Ja-ae patches up for her. Sang-hyun tries to joke her into a good mood, but Mo-yeon finally gives in to her frightening ordeal, and cries.
Things are mostly back to normal the next morning, with the shirtless soldiers entertaining the squealing nurses. Today Sang-hyun pulls Dae-young aside to complain, but Dae-young just grins at him and keeps going. Hee.
Things are a little strained between Mo-yeon and Shi-jin, but she finds him to ask after Fatima. He says she’s being treated at Corps Command and will be fine, but Mo-yeon isn’t so sure. She says that Shi-jin seems to lie to her a lot, such as when he said the Haunted Village kids were safe, when truthfully Argus had them.
Shi-jin explains that he didn’t want her to worry, but Mo-yeon wonders what else he’s lied to her about. He thinks about other white lies he’s told her, in the interest of protecting her, but he says to her face that there have been no other lies. She immediately knows that that, in itself, is a lie.
She explains that she understands that these aren’t lies she can complain about, and she even knows that his jokes are carefully placed to avoid telling more lies. But she’s scared that he’ll go on joking, and she’ll go on knowing why, and eventually that will be the sum of their conversations.
Crying now, Mo-yeon says that she just wants normal conversations, like everyone else. Shi-jin says that she can say those boring things to him, that he wants to hear everything she has to say. She knows that he does, but she can’t say inane things to someone who shields people from bullets.
Shi-jin voices his worst fear — does she want to break up? Mo-yeon answers that she just wants to know if he’s someone she can deal with. She turns to go, while Argus’s words ring in her head, how Shi-jin is a great guy, but he has a lot of secrets, and someday he’ll never come back.
Shi-jin goes to the airport to see Argus’s body delivered to the U.S. Army. The same American soldier he once fought now approaches him, thanking him for the “gift” of all the paperwork they’ll have to do, and Shi-jin offers a wry apology. But the soldier says that it’s a good day when a failed operation results in paperwork, and not lost lives.
It’s time for the Haesung hospital team to finally go home, though none of them are as eager to leave as they used to be. They perform their last rounds, visiting Myung-joo first, who is looking much healthier. Young-soo is also recovering, though more slowly, and Mo-yeon lets him know they’re not happy with his behavior putting them all in danger.
She tells him that he’ll be deported to Korea soon for punishment, but the jerk can only whisper, “My diamonds….” She lets him know they’re gone for good, enjoying his stricken reaction.
A fax comes in for Chi-hoon with some test results, and Min-jae asks if he can take them to him. Chi-hoon is in quarantine so he’s surprised to see Min-jae there without safety gear, and Min-jae just casually flips him his test results — negative. He’s not sick, and he can go home.
Min-jae quietly admits that he’s glad Chi-hoon won’t die, then gets adorably upset when Chi-hoon doesn’t react right away. He snaps at Chi-hoon not to say thank you or apologize, because he won’t either, but it’s clear that he’s not truly angry anymore.
Chi-hoon heads out for some fresh air, and has a year scared off his life when his little friend pops up out of nowhere like he always does. He gives the boy a gift of sneakers, though he doesn’t understand when the boy says that what he really wants is a goat, ha.
He asks the boy his real name, and when the boy keeps repeating that he wants a goat, Chi-hoon latches onto the word and thinks his name is “Jadi.” This whole conversation is adorably hilarious.
Mo-yeon can’t stop thinking about Shi-jin and how he shielded her from Argus’s bullet, and we see that the photo she saw him burning was the one he’d taken with Argus when they were friends. Shi-jin had cried bitterly, mourning his lost friend, unaware that Mo-yeon was only feet away.
She had seen his tears then, and the ones he let fall when he was forced to kill Argus. As Shi-jin had cried that night, it was Mo-yeon’s turn to shield him, covering his eyes with her hand and telling him to forget.
Now she goes to talk to him, asking him to make coffee and meet her outside. He does, but when he holds out a cup of coffee for her, Mo-yeon steps into his arms and hugs him. He stands there stunned, still holding both cups of coffee awkwardly, while she tells him calmly about her day.
She steps back and says that from now on, she’s just going to tell him even the smallest things. She’s decided to make this work, so he may as well learn to cope with her chattering. But she asks Shi-jin for one favor, to allow her the right to worry about him.
What she means is that she can’t worry about him every time he’s away, so she asks that he let her know when she should be worried. Shi-jin nods, so Mo-yeon steps back to ask one more question. Which will he choose, her or his country? She says she’sll only ask this once, and he answers that it’s her.
She grumbles anyway, wondering what he’ll do about his country then, and he quips that his country doesn’t get jealous. Ha. This time Shi-jin is the one pulling her in for a hug, and he promises that he won’t let anything happen to worry her. They stand there cuddling, happy.
Dae-young finally relaxes when Myung-joo starts demanding food, and he promises to buy it all for her back in Korea. She gives him back his dog tags, with a sweet little “I love you.”
Dae-young and Shi-jin attempt to make samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) for Myung-joo and Mo-yeon, which sends Private Ki-bum into a frenzy of fussing at their clumsiness in his kitchen. The ladies love it, though they hilariously attribute the great taste to Ki-bum’s interference.
Their conversation somehow turns to the man they had a falling out over back in school, and the boyfriends wisely keep their mouths shut while Mo-yeon and Myung-joo verbally duke it out. Myung-joo claims that he said he was only friends with Mo-yeon, though Mo-yeon swears they had been officially dating.
They finally realize that they’re arguing over an old boyfriend in front of their current boyfriends, and those boyfriends don’t look at all happy about it. Suddenly the tables are turned, and it’s the men who get to pepper the women with questions, while the women lie through their teeth.
Mo-yeon finds Shi-jin in his office, and her plan to pretend to be sick to gain forgiveness fails spectacularly. She decides to just call her old flame then, since Shi-jin won’t talk to her, and he flips the phone from her hand the same way he did when they first met. But this time Mo-yeon catches it deftly, and tells him to listen up.
She says that she likes Yoo Shi-jin better than any guy she’s ever met. They totalled three cars together, fell in the ocean, fought a disease together, and she even got a gunshot wound from him. “Even so, I like him so much. Because he was never cowardly, he was always honorable, and he was handsome at all times.”
Shi-jin is grinning against his will by the time Mo-yeon is finished, and he agrees to talk to her. She says that she’s going to see Fatima the next day, and wonders if she could ask Daniel and Ye-hwa to be Fatima’s guardians. Shi-jin doesn’t think they’re good choices since they tend to move around a lot, but he has another suggestion.
So in the morning, they take Fatima to meet the bar waitress, Valentine, and Shi-jin tells her that when she helped him by giving him information, Fatima is the girl she saved. Valentine agrees to watch over her, and even Fatima seems happy with the arrangement. She thanks Mo-yeon for all her help, and promises to keep in touch.
Later Shi-jin asks Mo-yeon what she wants to do when they get home (a hot bath), and he asks her if she’ll give seeing a movie with him another try. She agrees, looking forward to doing normal couple things like movies and coffee dates, instead of getting kidnapped.
Shi-jin tosses her something — it’s the stone they took from the secluded beach. She’s touched that he still has it, and he takes her hand, saying that she did well (while in Uruk). They kiss as the sun sets.
The women enjoy their last morning view of gorgeous men, and they notice a new guy in the lineup. HAHAHA, it’s Sang-hyun in only a pair of shorts, and he high-steps cheerfully while saluting Ja-ae — if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em!
As the medical team pack up to go home, they all stop to observe their last siren call, remembering those who died in the earthquake. They pose for a group photo with the soldiers, and soon, they’re back home in Korea.
COMMENTS
I can’t say I’m sad to see Argus go, since as I said, I never found him much of a frightening threat. It seems to be the case with much of the conflicts in this show — they’re good ideas, and the execution is fine, but I just haven’t felt much actual fear that anyone was in real danger. The one exception was when nobody knew who was sick with the M3 virus or if someone could die, but even there, everyone turned out just fine after a minimum of worry. There’s just something missing when it comes to the conflicts in the show, with the exception of the romantic conflicts. At least those are well-conceived and seem real and immediate, and since that’s really what the show is all about, I’m happy to accept it and let the lukewarm outside threats fall by the wayside.
I’m happy to see such a positive resolution to the major conflict between Shi-jin and Mo-yeon — could they find a way to be together in spite of their differing ideals? I love how being together in Uruk has allowed them both to see exactly what the other feels about life and death, and also to come to a better understanding of their own moral compass. Shi-jin has learned that there can be something he places above his country, and that there are ways to compromise so that he can do what he needs to do, and be an honorable soldier and a good partner. His character arc hasn’t been as flexible as Mo-yeon’s, since he’s naturally given less leeway to bend in light of his career path, but he’s definitely more accepting of Mo-yeon’s stance of “life before all” than he used to be. By making the choice to blatantly defy orders and go after her when she was in danger, he showed that he understands her position and is willing to act on it when necessary. And what I really love about Shi-jin is that, even when doing what must be done, he’s not unaffected by it. Being forced to kill his old friend caused him a lot of pain, and it’s that humanity that keeps Shi-jin grounded.
Mo-yeon has changed even more drastically, and seems like a whole different person than when she and Shi-jin first met. She’s seen why he has to sometimes follow orders blindly, and she now understands why Shi-jin occasionally has to lie to her. But she knows now that it’s not from a moral failing of his, but an attempt to protect her, so I love the compromise she constructed. At least, if he must lie to her, he can let her know whether this is a time to worry or not, so that she doesn’t have to spend her life in a constant state of high alert, wondering if she’ll ever see him again. It’s a good system, and one that will allow them to love each other without butting heads over the small stuff.
It’s interesting, because this episode felt like it could have served as a finale episode. All of our love lines are established, their work in Uruk is done (for both soldiers and medical team), and the bad guy is vanquished. But in a way I’m glad that we’re going back to Korea, because it will be just as interesting to see if their newfound relationships can survive the day-to-day minutae of civilian life. It’s easy to maintain that sense of romantic tension when literal lives are in danger, but when the worse thing you have to contend with is that the barista got your coffee order wrong? It’s a whole new set of challenges out there.
But I’m looking forward to seeing what the final two weeks of the show brings, as all of our players settle back into their lives. Not one person, soldier or medical team member, came back from Uruk unchanged, and I think it’s going to be fun watching them readjust to life without the constant threats hanging over their heads.

Thank you for the recap! I loved this ep., so much happened. And so we bid goodbye to our resident bad guy. “Goodbye” Agus, you represented a lot of things in this drama, and I gladly see you go. With Agus kidnapping MY, I mentioned last week that he was asking for his own death to come soon. I just was not sure how soon it would happen, and so I guess Agus was not to see ep.16. I found interesting what YSJ said, when he met the US captain, “it is lonely to have no country to serve, and no honor,” Agus had lost both a long time ago, and I was glad to see SJ grieve the loss of the friendship, and what Agus once stop for.
I also did not expect to see Fatima back, after last week’s episodes, so it was nice to see that there was a proper closure to her character as well. She will have a person looking after her. When SJ asked MY if she wanted to break up with him, I remember thinking, “oh no, not again. It took you guys long enough as it is to finally start dating.” I was glad that see that that question was quickly answered. I loved MY’s comment, about not knowing if she could handle someone like SJ, and the answer she finally gave him. They were standing shoulder to shoulder, and she could openly comfort SJ (and worry about him), as he had comforted her (and will probably continue to do so). I loved those hugs they had. The second time around, SJ was holding on to MY as if he did not want to let her go (and maybe he didn’t). She was finally fully his.
So I am assuming that it is also goodbye to Daniel and YH as well. I am curious to see if they might pop back before ep.16. I loved how MJ ran, as soon as she thought that SDY might be back, and how he caught her. That embrace, that look… I love seeing those two together. I also loved seeing the guys cooking for the women, with DY showing off how to throw the salt into the pot, and YSJ cheering him on. The arguing between MY and MJ was so funny, and I loved the call back to the incident happening with the picture and the guys in ep.10.
And Dr. Song! What can I say about you? I have loved you since ep.1. That scene with him running with the other soldiers shirtless, was priceless! Dr. Song is awesome. I have been wondering for a while now, if Dr. Song might not be having pictures of nurse JA in that zip file he keeps talking about. I would not be surprised if that was what he has there. I was also disappointed that we didn’t get a better view of the kiss, but oh well. At least our captain was happy?
I found interesting how neatly the Special Operation rescue was handled, with Daddy Yoon sending in the Alpha team, and with the Prdt taking responsibility for it. That was quite a turnaround Daddy Yoon had in this ep. I guess he had his sense of honor back, and the respect of his daughter.

Thank you for remembering! I did check the ep. 11 recap, and I saw the gifs you posted in one of your comments there. Those gifs really capture what happened in those scenes, thank you again for the link. I have some questions about this ep. and about the drama in general, and so I hope that you and some of the other beanies will be able to help me figure them out. Thank you!
1-Do you guys think that SDY called Daddy Yoon to tell him about his plan to go help YSJ before he got the other guys together, or do you guys think that SDY gathered the guys first, and then called Daddy Yoon? I am confused about that, because SDY was clear about it being a non “ordered” mission, which is why I am assuming he told his men they could choose to leave. But then, when the guy in charge of Foreign Affairs (or is he Chief of Staff?) had his altercation with Daddy Yoon, Daddy Yoon already knew that Alpha Team had regrouped and gone on a private mission. So what came first? Because honestly, when I saw SDY talking to his men, it sounded to me like SDY had decided it on his own, and that they were going without the Korean government’s permission (or even Daddy Yoon’s). So what do you guys think happened, and in what order?
2-What are those black things the guys were wearing on top of their black shirts? Were those bullet proof vests? If so, what about the other brown vests they sometimes wear, are those bullet proof vests as well? They also wear them on top of their uniforms’ shirts. Also, I was wondering, their belts (the brown ones), have many holders, what are the different things they might put in them?
3-So the US captain is the one that we saw in ep.2, right? And so he must be the dad of one young lady who is part of a show (currently) on TV in Korea, right? A beanie had commented about that in ep.2 or 3 recap (I didn’t go and look for it though, but I remember reading her comment).
4-So, how late do you guys think the US captain reported the failed ops? Because it seems that there would be no repercussions for the Alpha Team. And why would the US side have a lot of reports to write? (I didn’t get why).
5- I am confused: didn’t SDY’s chain break when he took it off his neck in ep.11? But now MJ is giving it back to him, and it is not broken, @ 44mns in.
6- YSJ’s commander, during the rescue mission for YSJ: why wasn’t he wearing a bullet proof vest? That was why he died, right? I have been curious about that.
7- How do you guys suppose YSJ and SDY knew where Argus lived? That mansion they went to.
8-When a superior calls YSJ or SDY, why do they have to say their title and name “Captain YSJ,” for example. YSJ did that a few times with Daddy Yoon, like when he was briefing him about Agus, and the US plans to use him.
9-When they serve the chicken with ginger, do they serve a whole chicken? At 45:22mns in, it looked like the girls had whole chickens on their plates.

I can't answer all your questions, but I can some:
2) Yes, they were wearing bullet-proof vests over their black gear; and the brown ones they sometimes wear are also bullet-proof vests, just different ones. I can't tell you for sure what their utility belts hold, but most likely they contain pouches for a radio, perhaps a canteen, and most definitely a holster for a handgun. Likely they also have a knife in there somewhere, too.
5) SDY's chain didn't break when he pulled on it; the chain has a fastener that allows you to tug it off, but also to reattach it afterward. They're pretty standard on every iteration of dog tags I've ever seen. You can see one here: https://static01.nyt.com/images/2013/01/27/magazine/27wmt/27wmt-articleLarge.jpg. The longer "link" holds two of the smaller ball-thingies in it and keeps the ends of the chain together. SDY wouldn't have had any problems putting his chain back together when he got it back.
6) I'd have to go back and look, but there are two likely scenarios that explain why YSJ's superior died. First, he was shot in a place his vest didn't protect -- possible, because, in order to keep mobility through the hips and waist, the vests don't come all the way down the torso. But probably more likely, he was shot with an armor-piercing round. He was definitely shot by a sniper, at a not-too-distant range (for a sniper), and their rifles are very powerful. With that much power and an armor-piercing round, the bullet would have penetrated the vest he was wearing.

Hello Estel,
And thank you so much for taking the time to read my comment and my questions, and for attempting to answer them. I appreciate that (very much). Q2-You pretty much covered it. I guess I was right in assuming that they probably have different items in those pouches, I was just curious as to what they might be.
Q5-So, I am trying to imagine this, since I have never seen one of those chains up close: does the fastener just “slides off” when one pulls on it? Because that was what SDY did in ep.11, and he pulled on it kind of hard, which made me think that the chain had “broken.” (But I learned with you that they actually don’t). Thank you for the link with the image btw, that helped (and my question this time is actually because I have seen the picture of one). So, about this, “The longer “link” holds two of the smaller ball-thingies in it and keeps the ends of the chain together,” would the “longer link” be the “long” oval thing I saw on the image? Which would mean that the “smaller ball thingies” are inside that “oval” “longer link,” right? Did I understand you correctly? I was trying to visualize how it is.
And actually, it wasn’t SDY who put the chain back together, it was YMJ. She was wearing it on her neck when SDY came back, and there is a scene in this ep. when she is sitting on her bed, and SDY is sitting in front of her. She takes the chain off of her neck, and she puts it back on him. That was when I saw that the chain was put back together, and that made me curious. That scene is at 44mns in (or close to that), and also, I just rewatched it, and his chain has two dog tags. And I think I saw a small oval thingy. That might be what you were referring to, right? It might have been hard for you to explain, thank you for doing that. Why does his chain have two dogs? Do you know?
Q6-So, I went back and looked for some of the scenes where YSJ’s superior was killed. In ep.5, 19mns in, we have about 1mn or 2 or the actual scene. In ep.10, 11mns in, we have a 10 secs of the scene when he was actually shot, and I will be hones t and say that both scenes left me confused. That superior also is in ep.2, 32mns in (a little after 32mns in actually). So now I am really confused, because if I remember well, in all three eps. where he appears (YSJ’s direct boss), he was shot in the back, and he seemed to have been wearing a bullet proof vest. But one still sees blood on his back, as he falls into YSJ’s arms, and against YSJ’s body. How could he be wearing a bullet proof vest, be shoot in the back and be fatally wounded? I wrote close to the exact time of those scenes, in case you might be interested in checking them out. They are not long at all. Edit: I just reread your comment, and having watched all 3 videos, I think that your 2nd theory is the most probable one.

Q9-Thank you for including the picture of the dish in your response. I feel that I might have seen this dish in the drama Gu Family Book. Have you seen that drama? So now, I have another question: when the whole chicken is served, do people usually eat it in one sitting (in one go)? Because a whole chicken, especially for petite women like YMJ and KMY seemed to be a lot. And there are no side dishes to go with it? When one is served such a chicken, can one choose to eat only part of it, and eat the rest later? How would that work, if you are at someone’s house and you are given the whole chicken? If you don’t eat all of it, would your host send you home with it? I am just curious and honestly intrigued.

I'll try to answer the rest of your questions:
1. I think SDY called (or was called by) General Yoon first before he launched to the secret unauthorized operation... which somehow makes it an open unauthorized one (as in General Yoon granted the permission without the upper authority's awareness). While YSJ's gone, SDY will be automatically the commander, and the instruction (about the delegation of duty) should be from Special Force's chief that is General Yoon himself. Plus one soldier missing is still somehow coverable, but the whole team missing, even more, a special force team, I don't think even General Yoon can act all clueless about it, thus he decides to put it as an open unauthorized mission.
3. Yes he's the captain of US version's Alpha Team and yes he's the father of Jeon So Mi, the first place winner of Produce 101.
4. Remember that the one who should conduct the rescue mission is actually the US soldiers? Since the threat has already been eliminated by the Koreans, so automatically, the US has to cancel their mission and thus the paperwork.
7. YSJ must be informed by Argus (well, if he wanted to be saved, then he must tell YSJ the place right?). Not sure about SDY... though since he's so badass he must figure it how, lol.. like maybe asking Daniel? He seems to know a lot about Argus (he knows about the Haunted Village hosted by Argus, for example).
8. It's to inform that the mentioned soldier is in attention to listen to following instructions by the superior.

Q1: Got it, though I couldn’t help bursting out laughing when I read this, “Plus one soldier missing is still somehow coverable, but the whole team missing, even more, a special force team, I don’t think even General Yoon can act all clueless about it” That was well said, but it was also funny because I was trying to imagine General Yoon acting all clueless about a WHOLE Special Forces Team disappearing, and him not knowing anything about it . We have seen how serious and stern he seems to be, and him trying to act clueless was just funny to me. Why is it considered an “open” (unauthorized mission)? (I get the “unauthorized mission” part, but not the “open” one). That was what Gen. Yoon called “an unofficial black ops mission,” right? (per Viki’s subtitles, 7:23mns into the ep.).
Q3-Ok, got it. I checked, and his name is Matthew Douma, and he is actually Canadian. I also just found out how young his daughter is. She recently turned 15 (16 in Korea). Thank you for confirming that for me. If she was the first place winner, does that mean the show is over? It was on Mnet, right? His daughter is really pretty.
Q4-Oh yes, I had forgotten about that, thank you for reminding me. The Blue House Chief of Security kept insisting that the US would take care of the rescue mission, and he said that they would do it in 24hrs (I just rewatched that scene), and Gen. Yoon did not want to wait that long, as he thought that they didn’t have that luxury. So do you think that General Yoon stood behind YSJ (so strongly) because he likes him, and because he believes in him? After all, he wanted him as a son-in-law, though I think he might have given the order to let KMY take the fall and not operate the Arab Prince. I think I just wonder if General Yoon always believed so strongly in YSJ, and whether he always stood so strongly for him. I can’t help but feel as if General Yoon changed (to what extent, I am not sure), and I wonder if part of that change had to do with his daughter almost dying. What do you think? Also, I now understand why the US captain called it a “failed Op.” I didn’t get it at the time.
Q7-Oh you are right! Argus wanted an escape route, and so YSJ had to know where to go, that makes sense. You know, I had thought about that, that SDY might have approached (or called) Daniel and ask him about Argus’s quarters, since Daniel knew a lot of things. That would make sense as well.
Q8-Oh I see. I did not know that. Thank you! So starlight, in the process of reading your response, Estel’s and Minihaha’s below, I came up with more questions. I will write one of two here, and if you have the time, please feel free to share your thoughts.

1--29mns in (to ep.12), when they bring Argus’s coffin, and they put that simple sheet of Argus information on it, is that what they usually do, or was it because Argus was no longer a soldier? When YSJ said ”it seems very lonely with no honor, and no country to serve,” it felt as if Argus had been stripped of any or all honors. Was that what happened?

Usually I have seen soldiers coffins being covered by their country flag. Since Argus was no longer a soldier, and he died doing dishonorable things, he didn't get that honor.

I noticed that YSJ had a silent tear, as he was shooting Agus. And yes, that scene when he was by himself, burning the picture with Agus, and silently crying, was very sad. I finally realized how well he used to think of Agus (once upon a time), and how loyal YSJ really is (considering that he had been the one insisting that they saved Agus before they left, at their own peril, losing his commander in the process). I
was glad to see that Daddy Yoon sent in the other soldiers of Alpha Team, because YSJ going alone was quite dangerous.
I loved seeing that the death of Agus meant something YSJ: the death of what had once been between those two, and the acceptance of how badly some special ops soldiers could turn, once they lost faith in their country, and had different values.
I also loved how KMY quietly went and covered YSJ's eyes, in her own way, comforting him as well. That scene was soooo moving. I have not seen Werewolf Boy yet, I will have to get my hands on it.

Sorry to correct you but Mo Yeon shielding Si Jin eyes was her wishful thought while thinking back of what she should of done while he was crying his heart out over killing a comrade in arms and burning the picture of them together. Mo Yeon was behind the wall experiencing his pain and despair but she didn't know how to comfort him, so the next day once she thought long and hard about the previous days event and decided that she could be with him and should be there to comfort this brave yet vulnerable man, she wished that she could of shield his eyes and tell him to forget too.

Thank you also for clarifying for me what the scene was all about. Like the recapper here, I had not realized that that scene only happened in KMY’s imagination, of what she wished she had done the night before. I really loved how SJK/YSJ broke down and cried, not trying to be a strong person. Now that KMY has made it clear to him that she would love to be able to comfort him as well, I am hoping that we will be able to see such a scene (at least one), before the end of the drama. A scene (or more), where we see YSJ lean on KMY emotionally and otherwise. I guess we will find out soon enough, won’t we?
Also, I wrote some questions in my response to Michelle under my post above. If you have some time, I hope that you will read them, and give them a shot. As you know, I love thinking my way through a drama, and so I become curious about so many different things. Like for example, I thought it would have been interesting if the President had been a female. I would have been surprised, would you have been? (Though we know that the current President of Korea is a woman).
Another thing is that the US captain told YSJ that he reported the failed OP late (why was that considered a failed OP? Wasn’t the mission successfully completed? And that makes me wonder, what was the OP supposed to be, originally? Was it the selling of arms to Amang, the 2nd in command of Urk? See why I am confused?) And, what difference would it make, if the OP was reported late? Because obviously, the US captain reported it late on purpose, since YSJ said that he “was able to avoid struggles with his own troops” (meaning the Alpha Team? Or YSJ’s superiors?) Oh, and the captain told YSJ that they received the gift. What was the gift: Agus’ body, or maybe the diamonds? (I just realized it could be the diamonds. I had not thought of that). What do you think? And one more question about this issue: why did YSJ say this, “thank you for not reporting me on that day (29mns in)?” Did he mean reporting him the very same day Agus was killed? So was it maybe a failed OP for the Americans, but a successful one for Korea and Alpha Team? If so, why? Was it because the US did not get Agus itself?
At about 55mns in, when KMY says that “it’s like a middle age version of candy Candy,” (talking about Dr. Song and Nurse JA), do you know what she meant? And earlier, SDY said, “my gift is on the way, can I receive it now?” What did he mean by that, do you think?
You know, one of the scenes I really liked was after the President sorted things out with Daddy Yoon, he bowed 90 degrees to him, and he thanked him for a successful and safe OP. That said a lot.

Ok! lets begin answering some of your thoughts and question.
I believe the guys wear bullet proof vest over their uniforms, no matter what the op is. its always in the same colour as their op gear. They have lots of holders on the waist belt for such things as hand grenade, guns, knife, extra amo etc. If you watch back at the first 5 minutes of episode 1, Si Jin takes knife from side belt to do hand to hand combat with the north Korean, whom he sees every year trying to cause trouble, as both know each others name and greet each other with admiration for their respective roles. You see via the flash back that Mo Yeon has of the fateful shootout was how Si Jin sheilded her from Argus's bullet, he was hit square on the back, and without the bulletproof vest on, our beloved cheeky captain would be in surgery!
I believed that when the US captain said it was a failed Op, he meant it was a failed Op on the US part, they did not get to kill Argus/arrest him etc it was their intention to allow Argus to supplies arms for the coupe in Urk but then deal with him afterwards for illegal arms smuggling/trades etc. As he mention to Si Jin, they had to write hundreds of pages of report to state what went wrong with their own mission. The US captain must of known that Si Jin and team Alpha were heading in for the rescue mission and so he delayed reporting it to his superiors and thus Si Jin and team Alpha had free reign of the situation. US captain was always keeping a very close eye on Argus, so would have been clued in on the kidnapping of Mo Yeon, but as she had nothing to do with the end game of their mission, so US did not attempt a rescue operation, thus leaving it open for the Koreans to rescue their own.
Received the gift was definitely the diamonds, and money plus Argus's corpse!
I believe that Dae Young would have spoken to Gen Yoon and asked for permission to go and help Si Jin, he would've needed to know as much of the situation before hand. Gen Yoon gave Si Jin 3 hours of unathourised under the radar to carry out his Solo Op. Of course Gen Yoon, would not want his best to be without back up, so when Dae Young called he authorised Team Alpha to reassemble. That's why Gen Yoon could sit in on the emergency meeting held by the Security council, once the US captain had reported that Si Jin was intruding on their mission. Gen Yoon was able to confirm team alpha's involvement and the reason behind the mission. Having met Dr Kang Gen Yoon was in admiration for her braveness and thought highly of her and he is a smart man and could tell Si Jin likes her.

Candy-Candy is I think about young teenage love for these two mature people. Or more like the crazy kind of sweet unusual love between two types of people that are so different yet the same!
It's hilarious that they met while she was training to be a nurse, yet Dr Song was not brave enough to pursue! given that he is such a cool character as in he can joke about, yet be dead serious when it comes to being a Dr and has immense skills and human understanding, empathy with patients and work colleagues etc. Nurse Ha is a strong minded, strong willed woman who is very efficient at her job, but I think secretly she would want to have someone to lean on and someone like Dr Song is perfect for her as she needs to respect her man yet also get to wear the trousers in certain occasions/situations in their relationship. which he would allow her to feel that she was the one in control of their relationship, even though we know that Dr Song is just giving in to Nurse Ha out of love, affection etc.
He wanted to fly back on the first plane out of Urk, yet as Nurse wouldn't go so Dr Song couldn't.
It's a running theme in this drama for example between Myung Jo and Dae Young it is all about been together and the hardship of enduring not been able to be there for each other, so it would mean worry as they are not there for each other. So same theme running true and is carried through with Dr Song and Nurse Ha relationship/interaction. Same goes for Big Boss and Beauty's relationship (she wants to be with him((after much consideration)) she needs to know where he is so she can adjust her level of worry accordingly) as Beauty knows that secrets and lies are very much apart of the man she loves, not because he wants to keep secrets and tell lies but that his job requires it. Thus she will enter their relationship in full knowledge of all the issues he comes with yet willing to be there for him.
To love someone is to care for that person, to treasure being together no matter where (Disaster Zone), being able to support each other no matter if its personal (when grieving for the loss of lives), professional (when assisting each other to carry out their respective duties, he holds gun to protect while she saves lives), always being true to what you feel (Big Boss always says how he feels, Myung Joo always states her feelings and Dr Song always hints at what he wants and feels.
Going back to Episode 3 or 4 when Dae Young received a package carried in to the office by Big boss, who cowardly stepped backwards incase it was a bomb sent by an angry Myung Joo...she sent lots of gifts for other members of team Alpha, accept for Si Jin who was hurt that Myung Joo forgot aboyt him, and their was a note there for Dae Young, saying his present is on its way, which meant that Mying Joo was the present and she was on her way to joining him in URk. Of course when he decided to help Big Boss with the blacks Op mission he...

There is something wrong with that scene. I don't know if they decided o shove it in there later or what - Both characters have on different clothes and the blood is washed off. Mo Yeon has on a pink sweater now. Also her lip is completely healed. All suggesting it's the next day (or even later) when she puts her hands over his eyes. Or is he returning there often to grieve?
That takes place in the dark of evening. The very next scene is broad daylight and Mo Yeon is wearing the same pink sweater. But the scene does not continue as if they were together all night. Instead they approach each other from opposite directions with no acknowledgment of what happened the night before.
I love that this was a complete shoot and we're not subjected to weird story changes that occur with the live shoot , but this scene, while a great scene, felt like they had an idea for it and just squeezed it in . I think it would've worked better had they reapplied the blood put the original clothes back on - then it would've been an awesome scene

Yes you are right. That scene where MY cover SJ eyes when he cried was just her thoughts. She thought back to when SJ covered her eyes and told her to forget when she killed Argus. Shes reflecting back on when he cried and wants to comfort him to tell him to forget as well. It was a very beautiful scene and poetic..

I agree with you. It is more like Kang Mo Yeon was reflecting on the whole ordeal and the effects on her relationship with Yoo Si Jin. Captain Yoo, on countless times has been there for her and protected her, so she came to the conclusion that she should do the same for him as well by being there for him like he always did which reflected in the scenes presented as her thoughts. It was brilliant....

Yes, I thought the same. That scene is weird. So in my opinion maybe this scene is not actually happen. Maybe Moyeon just quietly hearing Shijin grieving and not doing anything, so she regret it. So the scene when he comfort Shijin when he is crying is like "If only...."
Because the same pink sweater she is using meant she is only imagining it and that's what makes her regret it and confront her feelings immediately with Shijin.

In the original timeline, MY probably stayed behind the wall and let SJ cry on his own. It's in the following day when she's crying in the caf/kitchen that she imagined the last night and wished she could have done what SJ did (when he covered her eyes when he shot Argus) and covered SJ's eyesas well from whatever it was he was feeling from the death of Argus. At least that's how I saw it since MY's clothes is the only one that's different in the scene (SJ has the same clothes and the blood was also still there so it was probably MY's imagination).

I too think that it is all her imaginations. The real scenario was where she stood behind the wall when YSJ was mourning. When she thought about it after that, and what YSJ has done to protect her (by covering her eyes), she realized that she should have/ wanted to do the same. I also feel that, that's the scenario which causes her to make her decisions that she too wants to try to understand and accept him like how he has always did for her.

No, you are not the only one gushing over Jin Gu. I have been gushing over him for a while now, sending some text messages to three beanies I know, and going on and on about how gorgeous he looks. I love it when he smiles, he has a beautiful smile. I watched a few episodes of Ad Genuis Lee TB, to see how he was in it. It felt kindda weird to see him in a different role, as I'm used to see him ad the stoic and very reserved SDY. It was nice to see him in another role though. I know he has been in a lot of movies as well, but I have not gotten a chance to see them yet.
I have a question: why is the topic of "Min yoongi" a "BTS" reference? I thought it was a call back to the girls' argument in episode 1? Did I miss something?

How hilarious would it be if Yoo Ah In was playing the ex? I can just imagine it, the boys run into him in a hospital or somewhere and when they realise he's the ex, they instantly become all intimidating and indirectly threatening and all the while, the ex is getting really terrified and he has no idea why.

I gushed over Jin Gu when I saw him being himself in the Guerilla Date.... his laughter and smiles and dimples, especially after looking sombre in so much of this show, are to die for!!!! He looked much younger there and even looked like one of the young idols but I cannot recall whom!

Thanks for the recap! This episode I did enjoy better than ep 11. I'm not sure if it was because everything was resolved so nicely though.
as always, gripes, and then stuff i liked
- I hope no one minds me saying this but re: Argus... that's it? Are we done with him forever? Somehow it feels unsatisfying, even though we've gotten rid of the bad guy and triumphed in the face of evil women hitting gangsters and villains that are very interested in the love lives of doctors. I think others have said this before, but I wish they'd showed more backstory regarding Argus and Shijin or something. Idk, I just wanted a little more of it?
-re: the virus... so once she gets the shots, even if she's not fully recovered, people can come into contact with her? MJ doesn't need to be quarantined anymore? I'm not a doctor at all but. like. is that normal?
-When Moyeon's talking about whether Shijin's a man she can handle, I felt like I was having deja vu lmao, hasn't she been working on this problem from episodes 1-9? Not that I didn't like how they talked things out though. That was honest and nice.
onto things I liked!!!
-When MY covered SJ's eyes like SJ did to MY in the hostage situation. I loved it. It's so-- I don't know, something about it strikes a chord. Also it's like the first time we see SJ cry, am I right? Loved it. Absolutely loved how she got to see him when he was vulnerable.
-I loved when DY and the rest of Team Alpha came to SJ's aid in the unauthorized op. DY's all "pft did you think we'd let you do this very dangerous operation to save ur girlfriend by yourself? nah" I love it. They looked so cool in their black outfits too >___<

ALSO 1) There's a discrepancy in MY's clothing??? In the scenes with SJ crying over the photo at first, she's wearing something different than the later scenes in which she covers his eyes. ??? Interesting.
2) About Shijin taking a shot from Argus... the only explanation I have for him apparently not sustaining any injuries that are serious is that perhaps he wore a bulletproof vest? Kevlar? I mean the drama does downplay his injuries (or maybe we're just supposed to think he has abnormal pain tolerance) but ... maybe he wore a bulletproof vest?

2. My thought exactly! I scared to death SJ got shot by Argus. But then, tada! Nothing happen. He didn't even get any treatment. So.. My conclusion is he wore a bulletproof vest. Thats the most logic reason right?

SJ is in a special ops force therefore he cannot go on a dangerous mission without a bullet proof vest. That is why he keeps on telling MY that he is good in his job and inclusive in his job description is to remain alive hence he has to always put on a bullet proof vest whenever he engages in dangerous missions. I was not at all surprised when he shielded MY because i would expect that from him as the Captain of Alpha Team. Always prepared for these scenarios.

Her issue with SJ actually evolved. Before she was scared of him dying or that he killed, but now it's more just his entire being not fitting in with a normal lifestyle that she has. She respect him now, but I can understand after really seeing him in action if she wondered if she can deal with him.
Then seeing the kids she realized how much he had been lying to her. She always knew he was, but seeing it first hand...and knowing she can't even get mad about it has to really make her wonder. I'm not sure I could be in a relationship with a guy who can't ever really open up to me. So she tells him that he has to meet her half way at least. I loved that they actually talked it out.

I loved how they talked it out as well. It just kinda gave me a pavlovian response after hearing shijin say "do you want to break up?" But the entire conversation with the coffee cups was just so sweet and the "countries don't get jealous" bit was so funny. All in all, I'm enjoying the romance a bit too much.

lol me too. I was like NOOO! I'm glad she actually didn't say she was going to though. But I felt bad for SJ because you KNOW he's so worried she'll dump him eventually. She has so much in the past and he know his job causes their problems. That she's willing to make it work says a lot about the level of affection she has for him. I really loved his shocked expression when she hugged him, and just how he answered with a nod.
I just hope he holds up his end of the bargain, but somehow I feel she won't give up on him so easily.

Same, the look of shock on his face was so funny and touching. It reminds me of when she confessed to him on the back of the truck and he was like "wait, really?????" He's so cute. Despite all the technical flaws, I feel like DOTS just does these interpersonal relationships really well (aside frm the CH MJ thing... idk how i feel abt that). MY and SJ (SHK and SJK) are just killing it.

LOL I watched this episode live and really thought MY broke up with him during that scene! My korean understanding hasn't reached that level yet so I was tearing up along with her! But, consistent with her personality, she again took time to really contemplate about her feelings before reaching a conclusion and discussing things with SJ. I love this couple!! ..Maybe I really should follow Argus in trying to learn korean seriously haha!

so i've been watching the show but might have missed a link—can anyone fill me in on what exactly is argus' story? it looks like he used to be a good guy in the past, but somehow turned bad? what happened? did he have something to do with the death of the soldier in the flashbacks (the one played by lee jong-hyuk?) what made him leave the army? what went bad between them?
i just wondered if i missed something... song joong-ki's crying scene didn't leave much of an emotional impact on me. in my head i understood why he cried, but i didn't think we were given enough stuff about argus to have actual real FEELS over his dying. the death also felt too easy, too simple.

Every recap I've read so far says that it was MY who shields SJ's eyes when he cries during that sequence with the Miyazaki-esque music, but I thought that was a "wishful thinking" if you will, on MY's part. Because what she was wearing (the green coat) when she stands behind the wall where SJ sat crying is different from the pink sweater she appears to be wearing during the tears-shielding scene. It seems to be the same pink sweater she's wearing while she's just sitting there remembering and crying. So unless this is one of the most glaring mistakes which I don't believe this drama has made, I think it was a deliberate choice to show that she wanted to and regrets not covering his eyes and comforting him then, which then becomes the last straw that helps her decide to accept SJ for who he is when she hears him walking in at the end of that sequence. amiright? or did i miss the part where she quickly changed clothes that night and wiped away her bloody lip in a matter of seconds ...

Oh wow, this is actually a pretty good explanation, but if this is what the drama was going for, I feel like it's unfair that the drama is making me consult outside resources to understand what's going on. What you're saying makes sense, but I feel like the drama should've shown us more explicitly that it was her regret over not covering his eyes and comforting him, and that's what led to her accept him - I need to be let in on Moyeon's thought process, please!

You are right. It didn't happen, but it's her fully understanding him and wanting to be there in the future for him. Like while remembering that she was determined to try to make it work with him. When she cried before he couldn't wipe her tears because he didn't know were they stood, and this time she didn't know either so she didn't really do it. She will in the future though.

Why would they have to walk back? The (English) recappers may have missed it, but most of the Korean viewers understood it was Mo-Yeon's imagination and wishful thinking. And either way, missing it only hurts the scene, if she had reached a different conclusion about her relationship with Shi-Jin. But because she's decided to stay by his side, for better or worse, it serves as a beautiful parallel to his shielding her eyes, their desire to comfort and protect each other. Whether it actually took place the night before or not, what matters is that she's feeling it and it's what convinces her not to break up with him, to give their relationship a chance.

I'm just saying that it's an ambiguous scene, which would be confusing if it's used in callbacks (like most Korean dramas do at the end of the run) because while it's in MY's imagination, for SJ it doesn't exist. That kind of scene is difficult when there's a split in audience perception, just because sometimes the writers/directors forget that one character didn't actually experience it.

But DotS is pre-produced, the writers and directors and actors have gone over that scene a dozen times, when they read the script, rehearsed the scene, filmed the scene, edited the scene. Why would the writers/directors forget the purpose of the scene, that MY's imagination led to her realization & acceptance she wouldn't leave SJ? There isn't that much of a split in audience perception, it doesn't hurt the scene either way, and the PTB are not going to walk back the scene, ie pretend SJ experienced it, because they've been faithful about characterization continuity and I've yet to see any sign they'll waver in the remaining four episodes.

This was also what I gathered from that scene. Memories of the night before, her regrets in not being able to be there for him while he was so vulnerable and alone, made her finally decide to stay in the relationship and find a way to make it work for both of them.

Okay, okay, can someone please explain something to me? So in the scene where Moyeon has a flashback to seeing Shijin cry as he burns the picture, she's wearing a pink sweater in the present, right? And in the time of the flashback, when she's actually seeing him crying, she's wearing a green jacket and white shirt. But why is it, then, that when she covers his eyes (assuming that it happened in the same time frame as the flashback), she's all of a sudden wearing the pink sweater of the present? If it's just bad editing, then that's one thing... but that also means that when they were filming the scene where she walks over and covers his eyes, they purposely made Song Hyekyo change out of the green jacket and white shirt into the pink sweater. So then, if it's not bad editing, my two questions are - was the part where she covered his eyes imaginary? And if they meant to do that on purpose, as a way of hinting on it, then why would the directors/editors not choose to focus more on the scene or elaborate on it?
ALSO. Didn't Shijin supposedly get shot by Argus - that's why he dove in front of Moyeon, to prevent the bullet from reaching her? It hit him straight in the back like that, and he's fine?

That lip healed almost from the second Argus hit her. How do you have a scab but no blood? And the scab was completely gone by the next day.
Still love the show though. Far fewer glaring continuity problems than most kdranas.

The scene were she shields his eyes is her what she wished she would have done, or what she wants to do in the future. She wants to be the one to comfort him. It didn't actually happen, but showed that she was going to be stay with him and not give up on him.

I freaking LOVE MY and how she handles this relationship. SJ does love her, but with him in charge their relationship would probably be nothing more than a fling before it ended out of bitterness and she's right, nothing to talk about it. She's trying to make them have a future and I loved how calmly she told him what he needed to do. I love that he accepted it.
I can totally understand how she feels like her mundane life isn't worth his trouble. I would also feel weird to talk about stupid crap with someone who is saving the lives of people daily. They have other things to worry about.
She had every reason to dump him, and after that rescue I wouldn't have even blamed her for saying he wasn't worth the effort, but that she stuck around, told him how to make it work and wants to share the burden with him is just wonderful to see. It's pretty rare for a couple to stay together, talk out their problems and then face everything together in a kdrama.
I like that Argus died and this ended this part of the story. This could have been the last episode, but I really looking forward to how everyone goes back to normalcy and how SJ and MY actually make it work apart.
And the hug was the cutest thing.

KMY rocks for a kdrama lead!! Even if some people thought she was kinda wishy-washy at the start, for me, it was in her personality. She's not the type of person to just jump in and out of things. She doesn't swoon easily. She takes her time to contemplate and mull things over. And I appreciate that she is open about her feelings once she's decided. The type to rarely fall in love but once she does, she loves fiercely.

I would not say SJ is not serious about MY. Okay in the beginning it was a fling for SJ but he got to realise how much she means to him when he went to Korean. You will remember that during their first breakup he only said it was nice knowing you. From that statement every grown woman could tell that Sj is a player. When MY told him to apologise for kissing her, he just apologises and leave, even after MY just gave him a sign that if he managed to save Private Ryan why cant he ran after her. However when he was in Korea that is when he realised that he has fallen deeply in love with her. He tried everything he normally did but it could not work. At first he thought it was going to be easy to forget her but he failed. That is why when he came back from Korean he told her that this time he is serious about his feelings towards him and this time around even MY was convinced about his feelings hence he confessed her love for her. It is true that from MY she has always been true to her feelings but afraid to share them with Sj because she could sense that from SJ it was only about a fling.LOVE COMES SOFTLY.
On the other side i cannot fully blame SJ for his behaviour around MY. He is doing a very dangerous job for starters, which does not allow him time to date hence he decided to not have a serious relationship. Coming from his point, it is reasonable because he knows that he can never be honest with anyone except his team members that is why snoopy was against this relation because he was afraid that the moment MY knows what Big Boss is really doing she will dump him. This goes to show that it is very difficult to date when you are in special forces.
But the upside of their relationship is that the both of them are will to compromise or rather loosen up on their idealogies in respect to saving live. SJ now has someone he puts before his country and MY is gradually accepting SJ concepts of saving live.
This drama is flowing well because in the beginning our lead couple had differences in respect to their jobs but now they have learned to accept the differences and embraced them and also know what to compromise to keep seeing each other. Sj used to be a lonely man because of his job but now he has found a partner whom he loves very much that he will do anything to protect her. on the otherside MY was also lonely due to her job but now she has found a partner who can comfort and protect her. A match made in heaven

I would just like to really appreciate the scenes in which the characters spoke English because I found it very realistic; I feel as if SJK and SHK did an excellent job at not only reading and speaking those lines but also memorizing and using them in conversation. Even though they may not have been fluent in English - making it even more difficult to speak comfortably since understanding slang and context can be difficult - I felt that they did a very great job performing their lines despite this barrier. Additionally, when in a foreign country, particularly when dealing with diplomatic/UN relations and with English’s role as a “lingua franca” or “bridge language” (granted, not without controversy for this is primarily due to colonialism + imperialism) not everyone is going to speak English fluently but in order to communicate one finds the need to try and find a middle ground. Thus, there is a realism here in that there will obviously be errors and strange wordings and so forth, but I felt our leads did an excellent job speaking the language and using it or not using it (the scene with SHK refuting Argus in Korean was excellent and so symbolic!) during appropriate moments, and I didn’t feel awkward but rather a sense of appreciation at seeing how hard they worked to recite these lines WHILE acting.
On the other hand, this brings me to the problem with Argus; considering that he’d worked with the Korean military, he would have been a lot more compelling of a villain if he could at least converse in some Korean. We learn a lot about characters and character dynamics through conversation; and I find Argus just a big, mean bully rather than what I feel would have been a much more interesting characterization - Someone who has dedicated their life to the military, who was the exact same as Yoo Shi Jin in the past and fought for his country, who for some reason had to leave/was dismissed/ect and because of an inability to settle back in America or regular military life, decided to work his way up in the arms, drugs, and weapons trade. Because in the same way that Shi Jin and Argus both began as dedicated soldiers, they have met immensely different paths, and as such act as excellent foils to each other. One is a dedicated military commander who is greedy not to work up the ranks but rather to save as many civilians as he can; the other is the good guy gone bad who no longer serves his country but finds a new master in money.

And it’s a shame because this character set up is poignant and intriguing, but at this point I feel nothing, neither hatred nor sympathy with Argus simply because I find him rather uninteresting. I’d considered his downfall due to how in the past, the Korean operation leader at that time (Lee Jong Hyuk) was killed by a sniper and it seemed as if Argus was shocked by that along with Shi Jin. But we have not returned to that event, and we have only seen Shi Jin’s thoughts on the their relationship himself. And so had we learned how he ascended to such a place, and had we been given more backstory with Shi Jin (such as a relationship similar to that of Shi Jin’s & Seo Dae Young’s?) I’m positive that we as viewers would feel a greater impact from his storyline and the conflict he brings into the drama.
And that brings me to here: A part of me feels confused, as if Argus can’t truly be dead. Because his death feels so utterly anticlimatic; we know nothing about him except for the fact that he worked with Shi Jin. And yet, Shi Jin feels such a deep sense of sorrow for him, as this is the first episode where we have seen him cry despite all the hardship he’s already endured. One of the scenes that I felt truly juxtaposed Shi Jin and Argus’s characters, and truly depicted why Shi Jin chose to be a soldier, was when he stood in front of Argus’s casket and mentioned that he looked “lonely” because he didn’t have a nation or a country that would mourn for him and because Argus had given up on his own country. This is beautiful because Shi Jin is the only person who took the initiative to come of his own accord to send Argus off, not out of a sense of duty or revenge, but as a comrade who once worked with Argus. And so while this emphasizes a depth in their relationship (which we know nothing about even though our main villain is apparently “dead”) it also makes me question - is Argus really gone? Is this just foreshadowing when we never see his body in the casket? If he’s such an important character, then why are we still tip-toeing around him and his identity even after his death?
Overall, I really enjoyed these two episodes, particularly the immense character growth not only for our main leads but our other couples; though I do feel that there are numerous storyline issues. But I’m not complaining - I’m completely willing to take all the fluff they’re giving us in return for a lack of a strong, complex villain - even if I feel he’s not quite as “dead” from the story as we’re led to think he is in this episode.

Argus was rescued by the Korean military, but he did not necessarily work with them, so there was no immediate reason for him to learn the language. In addition, he went to Urk, where the primary language spoken there is Arabic, not Korean, so he would've been expected to have a passing knowledge of Arabic, not Korean.
And the average American, is one of the last people to get fluent in another language which isn't English or their mother tongue. I say "mother tongue" because we are a nation of immigrants, after all. But basically, I find the thought process over here to be "why bother learning another language, when everyone in the US is supposed to speak English?" It's only more recently in the last 15 or 20 years or so that Spanish is being recognized also as a business language in the US, and there are many who aren't happy with the development. I am not speaking specifics, but from my own experience. If Argus is like many of the folks I meet at work or outside everyday, then I am not surprised he didn't bother learning the language of his rescuers.
And I agree with you, the way many of the Koreans in Urk including, SJK, SHK, the doctors, nurses and soldiers spoke English was very realistic. They demonstrated a passable understanding and fluency that was really very reasonable and realistic.

In addition, the UN peacekeeping missions involves soldiers from different countries and Teams are built by those different soldiers, so Argus was a team leader for the team which SJ was a member. Then SJ was a lieutenant and Argus was the captain. When these teams meet there are expected to converse in English hence Argus would not have learned Korean or any other language.

Thank you Jamie and Adal. Your comments are very insightful. I read a lot of negative comments on their 'Engrish' and I never quite get them. I was surprised that I'm okay with their command of language because it's always cringeworthy to hear English spoken in kdramas. But I guess being a non-native speaker myself and having to deal with people with bad English all the time make me feel that they actually did a really good job at delivering their lines. Sure, YSJ's speech sounded too dramatic at times coupled with awkward emphasis and teeth grinding but they never claimed to be good in English.
I actually thought Fatima's English was not suitable for her character. She's supposed to be a native of Urk (right?)and yet her speech and accent sounded like she's American? Or did I hear it wrongly?

I thought they did a very decent job with their English lines mainly because they were still able to act while speaking. So many times in other kdramas I cringe because the actor is so careful about saying anything in English that their voices flatten out and slow down so much that there are no inflections in their speech patterns. It doesn't sound even remotely "normal".
But SJK and SHK had enough confidence to put some "acting" into their delivery. Not bad at all!

Their english was not fluent but it's very realistic. It was spoken with sufficient dept and emotion in it. I loved how SJK carefully stressed certain words with necessary emotion and expression, albeit some words came out a bit choppy.
But, I really really really appreciate all the Korean actors/actresses English speaking scenes in DOTS.

I don't know, I guess I supposed that SHK would fare better since she spent some time in US. as for SJK I probably had high expectations due to his "straight A" fame. my bad... Enjoyed this episode much more than epi 11 which had me ignoring the plot because so so many things did not make sense.... (The medical stuff is ridiculous and the international relations stuff and the fighting... *facepalm*)
So I'm really happy that this episode was so much better just because of the romance. Because if it was like episode 11 I don't think I could have switched off my brain anymore, despite how meltingly charming SJK is.

I agree episode 11 had me cringing at times. Hand over eyes a lot... 12 got better....There were a lot of conclusions that occurred quickly.. maybe too quickly. Felt a bit rushed, although I did like YSJ and KMY talking out their issues and giving the relationship a real chance.
I respect anyone that speaks a second language. I don't blame SJK or SHK for their lines. They did their best with what was written. I actually disliked Argus's delivery. He came across as more of a comedian than a scary international arms dealer. Not once did I feel like SHK's character was in any real danger. I tried hard to maintain some suspension of disbelief to get into the episode, but it continued to get broken with Argus's lines.
SJK as usual did an amazing job. The bromance is still fun to watch and the second couple's chemistry gets better and better. Looking forward to the next few episodes in Korea. Hope the chemistry gets turned up!

AT LONG LAST. someone with common sense. IF YOU ARE GOING TO BATTLE - and you know you could be shot - wear a BULLET PROOF VEST - even bodyguards have vest esp if they have a high official to guard and going some place.
and Big Boss knows that going to rescue her is not easy feat and yeah - gun blazing and fire burning.
And he was shot at the BACK - bullet proof vest is highly advance now. It will hurt like hell cause of the impact but it will not render you incapable of moving. And Big Boss is a soldier of war - being hit by a bullet with bulletproof vest is nothing...

Ep 12 was done so right.. It had just the right mix of action, angst and fluffy romance
Myunjoo and Daeyoung are hitting it out of the park with their own romance.. It's so intense without any external conflicts , yet their love for each other is so selfless
Have the kissing scenes been edited out by the dozen ??? No loveline in a kdrama gets to the "I love you" stages without a hot kiss / or two

Did you miss the ending kiss in Ep3 ending/Ep4 beginning? and the hayride kiss in Ep (9 maybe?). And now wegot the long kiss at the end of 12 (although, granted it's a long crane shot so the actors are probably just smooching each other's chins instead of lips)

But she didn't shield him, she was wearing the same clothes as she was when she told him that she didn't know if she could handle him. I'm pretty sure it was just her wishing that, that was what she should have done. Also, Shi Jin was wearing a bullet proof vest when he got shot, I wish I could post a screen shot, but there was a close up of the bullet stuck to his jacket.
All in all, I have come to really respect Mo Yeon because not only is she honest to herself about her fears and confusion, she's also honest to Shi Jin and I love that she gives herself time to think things over. Not once have I ever had to doubt her hesitation, because like I said before, this maybe a fantasy world, but in real life, her worries are valid. I honestly didn't mind the whole "are you going to break up with me?" because when you are in a relationship, even though it works through the committment of two people, if one person isn't sure/ is confused, they have every right to want to end it because at the end of the day, you can't always do things for other people. You have to do it because you want to and I appreciate Mo Yeon for being able to decide that herself.

can someone please explain to me about the date written on a paper of Argus's coffin? It was 3rd March 2016. as far as i'm concern, the timeline should be around june 2015 because Myeong Joo reported in at Mowuru Company on 28th May 2015. And Myeong Joo also said to Mo Yeon the Haesung Group will b there just for merely 15 days. I'm a lil' confused here. yeah, I know the Haeseung Group delayed their returning to Korea because of the earthquake but fast forward to 2016???? ?

I know I'm in the minority here but I don't feel that much about the second couple, it started so promising, indeed, I love both characters separately more than when they are together. The second couple story line didn't feel fresh to me at all. It was like kdrama 101:
A couple who loves each other ✔︎
Who cannot be together ✔︎
A parent disapproval ✔︎
Different social status and family background ✔︎
The parent son/daughter confrontation with the 'I love him/her so much that I will give up everything for him/her' ✔︎
Stoic character who doesn't show his/hers real emotions ✔︎
A character who will not take a NO for an answer ✔︎
Personal sacrifices for the love one and the "I am not good enough for her/him" though aka noble idiocy ✔︎
My pure love it's virtuous and 'virginal' so I'd kiss her in the forehead as a father will do to his precious daughter (although we are adults with sexual desire) ✔︎
A "fatal" disease that brings the couple together ✔︎
At the end love wins ✔︎
I'm not saying they don't have good things as a couple. They do but still the majority of their relationship plot is kdrama 101 as it's 'worst', and it really doesn't suck as it should be because the actors brought live to their characters but at the end of the day it's a overdone plot device in dramaland, so it didn't get me hooked as it should have. Who knows maybe in the next few episodes It would change, let's hope for the best.
As for the episode itself I did love SJ and MD in there, all their interactions felt so 'real'. I really appreciate the honesty in their conversations like it's never about not wanting to be together they both know they want it, it's about how to compromise and make it work (and that it's what a real relationship it's about it). Normally, in Kdramas is all about how we get the couple together not how we make them stay together once we establish that they love each other and they are in a relationship. They don't even consider these aspect in many dramas and in real life just because you love each other doesn't mean it would work in the long run so I appreciate that here at least they're point them out.

Yeah, I don't particularly like them either. Not that I dislike them, but they aren't that interesting. There's a reason they have limited screentime tbh. They are the typical class differences + meddling parents couple that is in most kdramas. Just switch the genders and make the General an evil mom instead of a nice dad.
I find their angst less moving and more irritating and the fact that even after years??? of dating they aren't on the same page working together to solve their problems is bothersome. Just go have babies and end your pain.
And I like them better apart than together. Or when they are hanging with MY/SJ. I wish MJ had more ambition and was more believable as an army doctor because it could be an interesting story-line as a woman in the army. But her sole focus in life is DY. I guess we are supposed to be moved because TRUE LOVE, but I'm like eh...
I also find the attempts to suggest MY should act like MJ and not care if SJ is in danger silly because MJ is part of the same lifestyle as DY while MY is not.

I agree that the relationship did have most of the tropes you mentioned, but I think you were wrong about two of them.
A character who will not take a NO for an answer: I would agree with you if Dae Young wasn't actually in love with Myung Joo and she still persisted, but he's being, as you've said, "a noble idiot" and it's very clear how much he loves her, so in this case, her persistence isn't so much unwanted as her trying to get him to stop being pig-headed and admit he loves her. And she hasn't really done any of the creepy things that characters like that usually do. I think she handled quite well, actually.

He tried to kiss her once before, in front of his men even, but Shi Jin interrupted them. And when she's recovering from a deadly virus and he's about to go on an off-the-books mission to save his friend, it's hardly the time to do anything more. He's protective enough of her that he'd want to wait until she's completely healed to do anything. And there is nothing that says that adults in an adult relationship don't kiss each other on the forehead. It's a gesture of comfort.
Also, I wouldn't call her dad evil. Yeah, he's a jerk who sees rank before personality, but he gave in as soon as he saw how much they really loved each other, even with his idiotic condition, which makes him miles better than a lot of other truly evil kdrama moms and dads.

well the fact that he loves her so much it was introduced later on, after already a few NO, at the beginning you don't know how much he loves her, she may know but we don't.
As for the virginal kiss on the forehead, I didn't say they haven't kiss before also I didn't say adult cannot show confort or love with the kiss in a forehead just that in that particular scene it's the sentiment behind the kiss, also accentuated with the already known information that they had never have sex, and she is a virgin, so they kiss in the forehead itself reinforce that feeling, but that it's my taken. Maybe if I didn't know those fact before the kiss, it would have read to me more as you point out comfort, but it didn't (but again it's personal so nothing wrong with not seeing you like you do)
If the preview for next week it's true that may change but for now it is what it is :P
As for the father being evil... I said Disaproval Parent not evil, although I'm not sure how nice of the father he would have be if SJ have showed interest in his daughter; I didn't see his gesture of letting them dating as he given up as soon as he realize how much he loves her, it was more of giving up because there weren't more options really, but again that is my personal taken. He definitely is not the worst parent in dramaland.

Just giving my two cent. (I respect your opinion though, so no hard feeling ;) )
Well, some people (including me) like them more because: (1) we really like their chemistry and can actually feel it; (2) they get too much angst to begin with, which make viewers feel engrossed to their story development.
Cliche is good when it's done right. and in this case, it works well, because there's nothing ''threatening'' in the overall plot in this drama at all.
With 'romance' as the main part (I can see) of DotS, I take DY-MJ story as an appealing one.

*shrugs* People have their own opinions/references. I don't see the points you try to make here, why comparing the two otps? saying how 'cliché' the secondary otp, well so what if it's cliché. I gave up on trying to find a totally fresh, perfect kdrama a long time ago. DOTS is full of tropes and clichés and cheesy lines everywhere, it's not faultless to the least but i still enjoy it. it's cause i've learnt not to delve too much into those plot holes, incoherence or illogical parts, otherwise i can't ever watch/finish a drama, even less enjoy it. It depends on each drama, sometimes there's sth that keeps me watching despite so many things that make me roll my eyes.
Here Goowon made me feel for them. True, their love story is typical and nothing new but it's that intense chemistry (this most), that tension (their almost kisses are killing me slowly XO), that yearning for each other, those gazes. Jingoo and Jiwon really brought out the best of their characters to make it so believable and heartfelt on screen. The way they care for each other, the little gesture like how he strokes her hand or just simply when they hug. Idk, it just touched me you know and for me it's enough. MJ character might be in some opinion too DY centered but it's her character arc. A memorable scene to me when MJ told MY her view about DY being a soldier. that said alot about her character and i believe it's one of turning points that help MY to make her 'decision' too.
yea I'm always open for refreshing ideas but when a classic is so well remade like this it's all worth it to me. Give me a good love triangle with palpable chemistry and genuine feelings and all the angst and tropes i'll swallow it all lol

I'm not sure if I wrote something wrong or I didn't express myself well (English is not my first language) because I didn't say I didn't understand why some people like the second paring I just said that in my particular case I wasn't feeling it. Also, I didn't try to make any points, I just listed why I wasn't feeling the second couple as many others are. As I said before I don't mind the cliches (if I did I wouldn't be watching kdramas) it just in this case, for whatever reason they are not working for me. I'm just not feeling it. That's it.
@run 'why comparing the two otps?' I didn't compare the 2 otps ;)

I respect your opinions but i just dont get why you felt the need to make a list of why you dont feel a otp, when you could take that time to write about YOUR fav otp. Its what i'd do. I dont feel songsong couple but i dont go writing paragraphs about how they dont appeal to me. Its like showing my insecurities for my otp Tbh. Personally I'll enjoy my otp and Let others do the same to theirs.

Part of me wants to watch this because the reviews say it's great and the stills are stunning. But then I remember how popular King2Hearts was and how often I was yelling "That's not how this works!" while watching it. The ridiculous scenarios were too jarring and just took me out of the story. (Yeah, let's put a political figure in a training scenario that his rather sparce security team isn't aware of and just cross our fingers that a war isn't started for realsies!) I went in *wanting* to love it and was so disappointed. So give it to me straight, guys. How unrealistic is this thing, really? I don't expect hardcore realism in a military themed drama, but is it at least somewhat believable?

I mean, I feel like the recaps are a good enough guide for you to judge on? If you decide upon reading the recaps that this is too unrealistic for you, then don't watch? Everyone has a different tolerance level for ridiculous kdrama scenarios, but personally I can stand to overlook the unrealistic stuff. I think reading through the comments even will give you a pretty good idea as to what kinds of unbelievable things go on and what kinds of touching/awesome things happen. It's "somewhat believable"enough for me, although that's taking my Song Joongki bias into account. If not for the quality of everything else (cast, production value) besides the bits of bad writing/unbelievable parts, I'm not so sure I'd still be watching.

Argh, dumb phone. Anyway I'm usually pretty good at suspending disbelief, but military dramas are the glaring exception. Military service is kind of the "family business," I guess you would say. Makes it really hard to enjoy a drama where all the sudden security clearances aren't a thing and everyone seems determined to cause WWIII with really dumb mistakes.
On a semi-unrelated note: My mother-in-law is a nurse and simply cannot watch medical dramas without turning it into a drinking game. My favorite is when she watches House and takes a shot for every HIPAA violation.

Hmm, I don't really believe they go as far as K2H in accidentally creating WWIII? Shijin does go his own way like twice but neither of those times felt (to me) like he was about to cause some huge error. It's disobeying orders, but the drama makes me feel like he is capable of shouldering the responsibility that comes with his actions. There's security clearance and order, imo. The medical part feels less realistic to me than the military parts, if we're comparing. But I guess bottom line is that neither is bad enough that it makes me not want to watch anymore.

Since I know nothing about medical surgical procedures or military life beyond American tv shows/movies, I'm enjoying it immensely. One thing that's certain, it's not your typical "push-pull kdrama romance (although I love that formula too). But different from the usual fare is good. No coy fake I'm 29 but never had a boyfriend/girlfriend stuff going on here. The characters are honest about liking each other right away which makes the relationships feel more based in reality.

I share your sentiment. The difference is, I'm watching as it goes. It frustrates me as the potential is there, but underdeveloped. The Argus subplot (if there is any plot to begin with) for example. The lapses of logic are just too much, for lack of better words.

From my perspective as a student of international relations, the show does horribly in realistically portraying disaster zones and the politics behind humanitarianism, as well as the implications of placing the military in charge of humanitarian efforts. Also the show dropped the ball in worldbuilding for Urk, especially since the locale is used to prop up conflicts but no idea what happened. Much like American military T.V. shows and films, the show does not hold back from blatant nationalist propaganda and a rosy portrayal of our hero. Vietnamese journalists didn't respond viscerally to the drama for no reason, the show really lays on thick with the Korean patriotism.
Interestingly enough, its portrayal of the CIA is realistic. They're shown as shady, and willing to prop up military dictatorships and work with criminals to further American interests. There are kernels of interesting points that are dropped but never developed. Overall, if you were to critique the show's portrayal of humanitarianism, military conflict, and medical issues it would not do too well.
The show is great in terms of the relationships between characters and its comedic scenes, those are the reasons I'm still watching because who knows when a Kim Eun-sook drama will ever get a non-asshole male lead who respects the female lead and no obnoxious love triangle. The OTP genuinely like each other beyond the fact that they're both smoking hot and characters are faced with moral dilemmas.

You are right: the setting and the way these soldiers and doctors work just make me cringe (and I know how things work in such contexts, since I worked in war and famine-torn countries in the past, together with sanitary teams, military people and mercenaries). Well, we cannot expect anything better by the author of The Heirs (with all those awful clichés and that plain stupid "run" from Hollywood's hills down to Malibu beaches)... I need to shut down my brain if I want to get through all the silliness and enjoy the main character's sharp and down-to-earth humour (the only realistic thing in this drama).

I love that this chapter closes and with it, our heroes and heroines now come to a full understanding of the sacrifices that must be lived out in their intertwining relationships. While Kang Mo Yeon still wants the regular conversations between girlfriends and boyfriends, I admit that I agreed with her when she asked for the heavy conversations and for the right to be worried. I would, if I were in her shoes. After all, relationships aren’t always walks in the park, right? I’d want to know if at that moment, someone I love is fighting a battle between life and death. I’d want to know if he is in danger. While I won’t be able to do much about it, there is something intrinsically valuable to a relationship about shared miseries. People want to go through it together. To keep the suffering to oneself feels very selfish, and while the argument will also go that it is for protection, it always doesn’t seem and feel that way to the other party. She asks simply not to be kept in the dark. She’s as invested as he is, so I think it fair (in certain respects) that they be honest with each other. I liked that she gently confronted him about it, and assured him she will try to cope with it. I’m beginning to see how she now tries to fit in her role and understand the dangers that come with being the Big Boss’ lady love. In the same way, I feel Yoo Si Jin also now realizes that he is lucky to have someone like her understand things this way. The maturity and growth she has shown over her stay in Urk is such a wonderful thing to behold –and Song Hye Kyo owned this. I feel no other actress can play her part better than how she’s portraying Kang Mo Yeon now. She’s fierce, she’s sassy, you hated her at first, but you see her growth. Song Hye Kyo shines in this drama. She’s such a great actress and knows the impact of correct delivery of lines and emotions. I think she’s also a big factor why Song Joong Ki is even more popular. Her experience and maturity supported his portrayal. Both are perfect for their roles.

I dunno, but I'm really iffy about KMY's character growth.
KMY has definitely grown, having to deal with earthquakes, diseases, and hostage situations...and romantically, she's grown in the fact that she's allowed herself to love someone who is as dangerous as YSJ. If I were to put a number to this, she would have grown 4 growth points (lol making things up as I go).
But the scene where it shows KMY hiding YSJ's face (which I believe to be part of her imagination), I feel like that scene set her back, like, 2 growth points because it shows she still can't encourage YSJ and later just frets about the fact that she couldn't encourage YSJ. YSJ has already done a million things for her, and there is nothing wrong with helping YSJ who was in need of help, more so because they are lovers.
UGH. I'm just very undecided about whether or not KMY has grown as a character or not. :P

I don't agree at all. She's grown the most out of anyone, and I don't think it was she regretting it, but she now knows that's what she wants to do from now on. To be with him and comfort him and share his burden. She wants to be able to worry about him and have a life with him.
That scene was not supposed to seen as a step backwards for her, but to show that she's willing to step up and "handle" him like she didn't know if she could do before.
And YSJ didn't dry her tears either when she cried because she was unsure at the time about her feelings. She also wasn't sure at that time and took some time to think about it. The next time either one of them cries they'll be there for each other 100%

While this change, has instill her with the thoughts that she wants to be by his side and support him even if it might be really hard to handle.

I'm not sure whether you're trolling or what. You stated so yourself that KMY "has definitely grown", but now you're undecided of her growth as a character, on the basis of the scene where KMY imagines covering YSJ's eyes while he was crying,you thinking that KMY can't encourage YSJ.
It's not the case at all. That scene you mentioned just made KMY realised that more than her fears and the lies, she wants to be there for him and to support him. KMY really stepped up and just like the rest of the commenters mentioned, I believe she has grown the most out of anyone.

lol sorry if it sounded like I was trolling I didn't mean to sound like that :P I meant that she grew but stepped back from that growth. I guess my word choice was a bit confusing; I was undecided on whether she grew as much as others believed she did. I didn't mean to discredit KMY for anything or to just say "KMY is a terrible character" or whatever, but I just wanted clarification as to why others believed she grew so much while I just thought she was still the same old KMY. I guess I was more confused about the scene and what it said about KMY's growth rather than KMY as a whole, which I admittedly completely disregarded.
Now that I'm reading your guys' comments, I can see what that scene actually meant for her as a character (as a whole, might I add). I guess I should've taken in the fact that YSJ and KMY "fought" earlier in the episode (I say fight, but it was really just KMY being undecided about their relationship) and that the scene depicts more than what I thought it depicted. I was kind of looking at the scene in a one-dimensional way, isolating it rather than taking the series as a whole together.

Favorite moments:
1. Alpha Team. The whole brotherhood is just too awesome for words. You save my neck, I save yours. Even cracking jokes in the face of danger –that’s how these men trust each other. When Snoopy was defusing the bomb and Yoo Si Jin was trying to calm Mo Yeon, he said something important: In 15 years, he has never once seen him not be able to disarm a bomb. He’s the best at what he does. I love that he took away her attention from the ticking 30 seconds left of life and assured her of his full trust on his men. It’s like, welcome to the family, see how we do this whole “I-take-care-of-you-you-take-care-of-me-thing”.
2. As soon as Yoo Si jin realizes that Mo Yeon was hurt, he doesn’t hesitate to point the gun at Argus. He’s consistent and the protective side of him came out. I love the way he took a good look at her, and within seconds, how he switched to being bad ass boyfriend.
3. Along this line, I also love how he fired a warning shot at Argus when Argus pointed the gun at Kang Mo Yeon. Don’t touch my girl, don’t scare her, don’t talk to her. Deal with me. Smooth, Joong Ki. Extremely smooth.
When he realized he needed to make a clean shot at her shoulder to disarm the transmitter, I loved that he paused and looked at her directly. He knew he needed to calm her down. Even his tone of voice changed. This was reminiscent of that cliff scene. She was panicky and wouldn’t trust him. He said the same things again: Don’t move, trust me. The difference was that both of them have clearly expressed their feelings so the trust issue is addressed. I’d be scared to let someone shoot at me. She needed to trust him completely to save her.
4. The conversation pre-hug. I loved how Mo yeon grappled with the issues at hand. She is consistent as well. She talks about her fears. She’s very transparent and again remembers the dangers presented to her when dating someone like him. I also love the line she said, when he urged her to keep talking about the mundane things. How is she to do that to somebody who takes a bullet, as if to say, someone who’s as good as dead?
5. The coffee-talk. To me, this was the meat of their relationship, when they are able to understand each other and be completely honest with each other. The way she hugged him and the way he was nervous and totally caught by surprise –nicely done, you two! I love their acting. It was so real and raw, and they really only hugged but there was so much depth and emotion that went with it. Their whole body suggested so much love for each other.
6. Dr. Song and Nurse Ha. The jogging scene was hilarious. He didn’t look bad for a middle-aged man, too. LOL

point #3: IA the scene looked badass, shijin was badass, heck even the lines were badass. but it was /such/ a stupid move imo- what if Argus was so startled as to drop the detonator, which, according to snoopy, would set the bomb off? being crazy at the expense of the life of a hostage they're trying to save is just plain foolish imo

There is no how Argus would have left the detonator fall because then SJ had the upper hand. Argus truly needed that chopper to escape otherwise he was going to be killed either by SJ or the CIA. Therefore SJ knew that he has an advantage. Please keep in mind that SJ is not just an ordinary person like you and me, he is a highly trained special ops force who is quick to read a situation and act quickly at it.
To me that scene was perfectly made there were no flaws

I totally agree with you recapper... Argus is not much a villain him is...
I mean, Argus character should just be a war intelectual phsyco. Which would suit him with all that angst and history of being deserter. Also, with the kind of history he'd share with Shi Jin. He should use Mo Yeon more to burn Shi Jin's anger, or simply just mess with their new insecure relationship.
However, I am amaze on how SHG and SJK pull off their acting power... Yes it is a force of power, jist like superman with all his flying and X-Ray ing ability... Trully pushes us to the edge of all good romance drama Korea should be all about.
11 and 12, these episode is like opening the door of descendants of the sun.
And, even so it will end soon enough. Still it felt like we just begun.
My wishful hope is like anyome else, extention or perhaps SP or better yet a second season...
Afterall, good story can be this soon to finish yet #kissandhugdescendantsofthesun

i don't know if it's only me but i was very bothered with the scene where shi jin infiltrates the enemy's camp. when he shot a guard at what seems to be a point blank range multiple times, it felt a little cruel. that may not have been the case though because of the angle of that shot but right after that, was the part where another thug/guard was behind him and a child as a hostage. still a great ep though, i think shi jin shone in this episode, like even if argus was not really the best-villain-to-have-a-compelling-connection-with-the-protagonist-ever, he was able to connect to me and i wanted to reach out to him during the burn the photo scene.
and also worth mentioning scenes were doctor kang's breakdown, so realistic and YMJ and SDY scenes, they're cute hahaha

I felt that I was being 'evil' because I actually liked that Shi Jin got to get in there and kill so efficiently. Maybe I liked the slickness of it more than the killing itself, but the judge part of me was thinking that they deserved being killed. ? I was wowed by how ruthlessly and efficiently it was done!

The entire rescue sequence was filmed after SJK's injury, when he could barely use his right hand and leg, so there was less focus on action (the infiltration) and more on emotion. I was mighty impressed with the emotional impact they were able to pull out of the rescue mission, and I want to know how SJK was able to film those scenes at all, his focus was unshakable.

well, it's a little cruel to kidnap women, hit them, strap a bomb on them, threaten to sell them and traffic children...so I don't see anything wrong with him being quick and without mercy in saving innocent people. He didn't torture anyone. He made sure they were dead. He's a special forces soldiers. He's not going to play around.

I cut out their parts so i can watch it over and over again xD Their scenes are just getting more and more intense. I think they purposely edited out the early kissed in order to build up the tension and make us dying for more lol

I always loved reading recaps by dramabean. Your recap and after thoughts are always insightful. I too agree that this episode can easily serve as the finale but am glad we have some time back in Korea to experience civilian life. Things may not be the same when the situation differs.

1. the alpha team came too soon. they should drag the whole shijin alone in enemy camp further, let him get beat up a bit before being saved by his team- that would up the tension by a whole lot and would feel a lot more realistic. instead they gave us a whole 10 minutes of political speech yuck. this is a consistent problem with this drama, the action scenes were over too soon that the viewers didnt even have the time to get emotionally involved in the thrill
2. again, we were /told/ that SJ and argus were once friends, yet we didnt get to see any meaningful back story between these two. i saw shijin crying bitterly over his death, yet again, there's no emotional impact on me as the viewer. i can't feel their connection. the fact that argus played his part like a generic gangster with no layers to his character is not helping either
there are so many things going on in this drama at all times yet there is a distinct lack of depth on anything else beside the romance

I am responding on point #2. I am guessing that maybe one who doesn't have any military understanding or military background could nor feel any connection at all over a comrade's death. It was shown that they had previously once worked together on the same side before, enough reason to at least care.

I know we don't want to jinx things, but if the past conflicts have been considered bland (by some), then maybe the biggie is coming up and it may not end as well as we want!!! ? ;)

LOL... actually the 'sad' or 'bad' ending was mentioned in passing before with almost everyone hoping it wouldn't happen. What I feel is that in the context of the show, where it's organic to the events taking place, I can accept that kind of ending (sad though I may be). It isn't even unexpected, from the many scenes of danger we've seen so far.
How nice... a question of interest and out of interest! How to compare DOTS and Healer? I like them both but I believe I have to specify what I like about each.
DOTS has the great advantage of being fully pre-produced and looks good in practically every scene. The editing is well done because they had the time to do it well. The epic, cinematographic feel has been maintained nicely from the beginning. The larger debate of whether one goes for love or honor, and what it means to be honorable in different situations is a nice overarching theme within which the romances are set. Therefore, there is no actual clear plot, and that's OK. This show is an examination of what forces bring to bear on individuals (and there are more than just a few individuals and couples showcasing this), decisions, thought processes etc.
Healer was made with many restrictions as to money and time and so the interesting parkour and fight scenes had to be scaled back and disappear, and there was no time to do a better edit or include more tying up of loose ends. Inspite of that, I feel Healer has the more relatable characters and growth in both male and female protagonists. I liked that the theme of healing was subtly included for the OTP, Moon Ho and Young Shin's birth mum. The ideal of the freedom fight of the parents' generation was not something the next generation wanted to continue, and they concentrated on solving just what concerned them, and chose to love and live. Healer has however a definite plot and it was well developed, consistent, coherent and paced well. The romance of course, was to die for!!!
Both are eminently re-watchable and have nice OSTs... maybe DOTS OSTs are stronger or at least more 'uplifting' in style.
Both have more than just the main characters with stories, however I feel Healer has the more rounded characters.
Both have a great respect for the audience (although I know some will argue that DOTS has many lapses of logic etc) in the quality of the show that is given to us.
Personally, because Healer was the first to grip me in that special way with all the right feels, I believe Healer will be my preferred show. That is not to say I cannot appreciate the greatness of other shows and DOTS does go on my list of great shows that I've watched. :)

Healer is way more suspenseful, deep and engaging than DOTS. Song Ji Na is a master, when it comes to building solid, multi-layered characters, writing poignant scenes (Healer ep.14... *Hello?*) and tackle complex social and political issues. I'm watching DOTS mostly for the romance and the main character's irresistible charm and witty sense of humour, but nothing more.

Haven't read the comments yet so I might be repeating what others have voiced out, apologies! I just wanted to say that I LOVED loved this episode! Haha! I was a bit underwhelmed by ep11 but this episode did it for me :)
The Alpha team was so badass!! It reminded us again why they are their country's secret weapon. Everything was shot and acted well during the rescue and I liked how the team trusted and were loyal to each other.
I know some people might think Argus' character isn't really fleshed out or is too cartoonish, but for me, he was mainly a means to further the growth of our main characters and also to emphasize what SJ as a soldier goes through during his missions. He carries alot of hidden scars as well and I teared up with him when he was burning that picture.
I also love how how dialogues/scenes in passing from previous episodes are brought up unexpectedly throughout the show. How things come full circle eventually in this drama. It's like you're sharing a secret with the drama and the other viewers lol. Like the reverse of the boys' situation from last week that now the girls were in hot water after getting caught arguing about an old *flame*. Or like the phone-flipping action by SJ that in this ep was caught by MY. Lol at his face after!! Also, the part where MY hugged SJ while he was holding coffee in both hands! Reminded me of the times SJ asked her to hold something and he did things to her (kiss her, tie her hair).. The dialogue and the writing were well thought out.
Lastly, I loved the conversations between the 2 OTPs. They have come a long way and have grown so much. Especially MY and SJ, in understanding and accepting each other and eventually reaching a compromise to grow as a couple. I'm sure if it were any other drama, MY would have broken up with SJ and it would have taken a few eps for them to reconcile lol. But here, we see them contemplate the situation and discuss their issues as adults.
Can't wait for next week!! Plus Yoo Ah In!!!! I am still in SFD withdrawal!

Oh I forgot to add how I loved SJK's myriad of expressions throughout this episode!! Wow!!! It was so awesome and fascinating to watch! His intense "game face" when dealing with the bad guys, the tears streaming down his face while shooting Argus, him crying alone while burning the picture, his expressions when he thought MY would break up with him over coffee.. then the realization that she was not, the cocky face that turned scared when MY caught the phone lol, his shy smile when MY was showering him with praises. So much good stuff from the captain today, haha!

I don't mind going along with some of the fantastical elements of the drama, when they focus on the main couple (which is like 80% of the show; when they pull away from the main couple, like episode 11, is when the show's weaknesses become more glaring) because their characters and the development of their relationship are not only my main investment, my favorite part of the show, but also the most enjoyment I've had of any fictional romance in a long, long time. (And I'm not limiting myself to k-dramas.)
I was blown away by Mo-Yeon's insight that if he keeps protecting her with his lies, lies she can't argue with because they're matters of national security, one day they'll have nothing to talk about because the trust in their relationship will have eroded away. I wanted to weep when Shi-Jin retorted (in banmal no less; he rarely drops the jondae when he talks to her) "talk to me, tell me everything because everything you say matters to me." I think one key aspect of his attraction to her is that she's so grounded in reality, this is a woman after all who was worried whether her financial situation would affect her mother while she called out her will over the phone. And I think he craves the normalcy she could bring to his life. I wanted to shout back 'no she doesn't!' when he struggled to ask the big question, "do you want to break up with me?". But of course, all of her objections and misgivings are valid, and I love how she reached the compromise that allowed her to give their relationship a chance. Most of all, I admire her courage, the kind of courage that asks him, "give me the right to worry about you, let me shoulder your burden with you, don't let me wallow in doubt whenever you're not with me, if you're in danger, I want to know." His love for her must have blossomed like a hundredfold, because mine did.

Amen. When the main couple isn't the focus you can see a lot of issues.
As much as people may not wanna admit it SJK and SHK are carrying this show. I 100% bet more than half of the viewers are tuning in for them.

Half? That's a very conservative estimate.
I have no problem with those saying they don't like the main couple and they watch DotS for other reasons. But when they qualify that with "and so does everybody else," I want to see the evidence, and I don't mean the "me and my friends" anecdotal kind, because I've seen a truckload of data that says otherwise, all through the run of the drama, and they're very consistent.

There's nothing but anecdotal data. By every measurement the main couple is the main draw to the show, and without them this show wouldn't get a third of the ratings it does. People who suggest otherwise need a reality check.

Completely agree with you. I love that both SJ n My are mature adults honest about their feelings. And the courage it takes for My to jump into a relationship with SJ. I don't mind the drama, the bullets or mines, the saving damsel or children. But I tune in for their chemistry and a relationship where two individuals we fared to intersect and the work they put in learning about each other, repeating their career and what it entails and built a relationship. It had started as mere physical attraction in Seoul and to see they grow emotionally.. It's beautiful to witness.. Both cheesy and endearing moments.

I never thought that I'd laugh this much watching this drama :) And I think I've actually got used to the cheese LOL I can watch (and hear) SJ & MY say cheesy lines all day and not cringe anymore :D They (and the other couples) are too cute for words (okay, esp SJK lol)!
And I'm GLAD that the scene when SJ got shot in the back wasn't made a cliffhanger! I actually checked the time and sighed in relief after realizing it's still early in the ep, or else it would feel like Nice Guy all over again!
