Beast’s Beauty: Baek Jin-hee out, Girl’s Day’s Minah in?
by girlfriday
Well this is a strange development. New SBS weekend rom-com Beast’s Beauty was initially courting Baek Jin-hee (My Daughter Geum Sa-wol) to star opposite Namgoong Min (Remember—Son’s War). But Baek Jin-hee has turned down the offer, and so now they’re courting Girl’s Day idol Minah (Sweet Savage Family) for the part. Uh… I guess they kind of look alike, but that’s no reason to go cast her in a leading role!
The new drama comes from the PD-writer team behind Girl Who Sees Smells and stars Namgoong Min as an ex-con who went to prison on a false charge. He then becomes a human rights lawyer and a chaebol heir, while the heroine is a cute, determined young woman just struggling to land a job. The drama will be about their ups and downs and his revenge, though it’s described as a cheerful, refreshing romantic comedy.
Ha Suk-jin (D-Day) has also been offered the role of Namgoong Min’s half-brother, who will be in a love triangle with the leads. I’m really having a hard time picturing Minah in the part, though I know she fits the image quite well. It’s just, I’ve seen her act and I don’t think she can carry a leading role.
I actually ended up liking her in Vampire Idol, but that’s because she literally had ONE thing to do, and it was in small doses. An entire drama with her as the heroine? I don’t know if I could do it. Baek Jin-hee, is there a chance you’ll change your mind? Pretty please?
Beast’s Beauty follows Mrs. Cop 2 on weekends beginning May 14.

3 Too many idols
April 8, 2016 at 9:51 AM
I'm sick to the core of all these idols taking up leading roles in dramas. Not only do most of them suck, they are highly overrated.
Actors act, idols sing and dance. You don't see many actors becoming idols, so why is it the other way round? Just seems like a shrewd move to make more $$$ and take up the positions of lesser-known actors.

In defence of this particular idol, she's actually not a bad actress at all. She's actually been quite decent n the small roles she's had (VI, Master's Sun, SSF) - and would have actually made a better lead for Answer Me 1988 than her bandmate, Hyeri.
I don't mind idol casting as long as they can act. Yoon Doo-joon, Im Shi-wan, Jung Eun-ji, IU, Lee Joon, Choi Soo-young, Park Hyung-shik, DO...... they're on par with and often better than, many non-idol actors in their age group.
The problem happens when the casting directors clearly prioritise image and popularity over talent - we REALLY don't need any more Kim Hyun-joongs or Seolhyuns or Suzys in lead roles.

An idol's music career is usually pretty short. Some or half of these young people are getting into the music business first so they can get a better chance in transitioning into acting even if they suck at it. It's much easier for a popular idol to get an acting role than a talented young actor. They don't even have to prove themselves before taking lead roles lol.
We have young and capable actors like Kim So-Eun, Im Ju-eun, Im Ju-hwan, Jeon Hye-Bin etc who are mostly playing supporting roles when they should be headlining dramas.
It's sad but Dramaland (entertainment business) is not all about talents. It's about money, connection, popularity etc.

the funniest thing is that a lot of these wannabe idol-actors can't even sing, they're literally just in a band so they can be photographed while some other poor sap does all the actual singing. So they have no musical talent, no acting talent.....it's a bit of a joke, kpop.
(this does not apply to Minah btw, since by the looks of it she is the one who does most of the singing for her group)

That is so true but then we have idols like Eunji who can do both.

I have to point out that Jeon Hye-Bin is also a former idol and singer.

I totally agree with you. There have been a lot of dramas that had the potential to be great but weak idol acting ruins it for me. I also get annoyed when I hear that "they are getting better" or they need more practice. There are so many actresses that are already great and we don't have to wait for them to "get better" because they are naturally talented.

Yes! That means Baek Jin-hee is available to star in some of the better projects coming out, with leading dudes I'm looking forward to! Yesssss.

I think there's no exciting upcoming project on MBC which still need of female lead. As you know, Baek Jin Hee will only work with MBC.

Perhaps Baek Jin-hee signed an exclusive contract with MBC.
Anyway, they're probably having a hard time casting the character because the role's nothing special. In fact, it's a really really really boring role. Also, NGM only recently rose to lead status. Not many established female leads will be willing to play a sub-lead to him. Of course, they can always find those who are trying to make the same transition, like Kim So-eun, or those who are still cementing their lead status, or idol actors.
Imo, BJH was right to reject the role, if you consider things from her pov. And after MDGSW, she really needs to pick her next project prudently.

I wish Baek Jin-hee had taken the Six Flying Dragons role when it was offered to her - too bad MDGSW ended up making everyone hate her because her character was written so badly.

It was a reasonable dilemma though. On hindsight, SFD was obviously the better choice. However, MDGSW gave her a female centric role, and an opportunity to become one of the most public-friendly stars in her age group (if her role didn't turn out to be that suffocating). On the other hand, even if she did well in SFD, she'd only be acknowledged as a good actress.

Baek Jin Hee was never officially offered the part, she was just given a script along with a handful of other actresses and the writers confirmed that they specifically waited until SSK's drama was over to visit and cast her for the lead. It's just that someone leaked BJH receiving a script before SSK casting news were released and SBS made it clear that BJH was only a candidate for the role.

I agree. As much as it pains me for NGM, i feel like this wouldn't do BJH's acting any justice. She needs to take on a meaty role like Tanasili in EK. I wouldn't mind seeing her as an antagonist tbh

I don't think SBS's that stupid to offer a role to actress that already in exclusive contract with MBC. They're just naive to the point that the actress still available, but she wont do any dramas outside MBC.

I meant that as a joke. They probably just have a good working relationship. An exclusive contract is too far-fetched...

If they can cast Jin Se Yeon as the main lead, why not her? Lol... they probably want us to forget the beauty and focus on the beast.

Judgin solely from Minah's stage presence and general personality (although we know that doesn't always translate to acting), I think she'll at least be able to emote better than Jin Se-yeon lol. I've never seen her act, though.

LOL. Now that you say that i actually feel better.
Honestly i haven't seen her work. But since this one's a rom-com, which demands her to be cute and determined whilst job hunting, i hope she pulls it off. I'm not saying it's easy, but it's not exactly challenging as well.

I had a hard time watching her in Sweet Savage Family, so this doesn't leave me optimistic. I would say that it was the way the character was written in that drama, but truthfully part of it was the actress. Her actions and emotions felt very forced to me which is why about halfway through the show I started fast-forwarding through her scenes. I think she would benefit from gathering more experience in acting overall before she tackles a lead role. Just my two cents.

I think she was right to turn the offer down, she's probably sick of playing the cute innocent, hard to land a job type of girl... So, I'm glad she's not going back into that kind of role hopefully something better comes up!

It's already famous. At the very least, it has a very devoted following because it's one of the few pages who has post quality and up-to-date kdrama recaps.
Also, although I rarely comment, it's fun to read all the well-thought of and witty comments of the many regular commentators here.

Just started a few days ago so I had to see the conversation from the beginning. I remember being skeptical when this post first came out. I was going to give it some time for me to hear feedback before watching. However, I got distracted with work & other dramas.
I'm sad I waited so long. This is an excellent drama. So far.
