Time of the Beast: Lee Je-hoon out, Chun Jung-myung in
by girlfriday
It’s not exactly a one-to-one trade, but there aren’t many (or any?) actors you could trade for Lee Je-hoon and still leave me happy. The actor ultimately turned down the offer to headline the KBS revenge drama Time of the Beast, formerly known as God of Noodles, and now Chun Jung-myung (Heart to Heart) is being courted for the role. He’s reportedly in final negotiations, which sounds pretty close to a done deal.
The drama is based on the manhwa God of Noodles by Park In-kwon, who also created Daemul, Yawang, and War of Money. It’s an underdog revenge tale about a man who rises up from nothing and becomes a master noodle-maker. Chun Jung-myung is up for the lead character, a man born to an amnesiac father who can’t walk and an herb-gatherer mother who’s mute. He develops a sense of absolute taste, which ought to come in handy on the road to becoming Noodle God.
Jo Jae-hyun (Punch) has been offered the role of a noodle master with vast knowledge. That doesn’t really tell us if he’s a mentor to the hero or the guy he has to bring down. Also considering offers are Gong Seung-yeon (Six Flying Dragons) and Han Ye-ri (Six Flying Dragons).
Chun Jung-myung can be hit or miss depending on the role, but I did like him in his last drama, tvN’s Heart to Heart, which played up his light, quirky side. His last non-cable drama was KBS’s Man of Honor, and the less said about that, the better. But that was yeeeeaaars ago and this drama will be better! Because I said so!
Time of the Beast follows Descended From the Sun in April.

Yeah, I feel the same. No particular reason, I just don't like him. I don't care for the story though, so it works out.

I have only watched him in Heart to Heart and I loved him there. And I hope Gong Seungyeon wont take the role. She is ok but not compatible with him.

I'm currently watching Cinderella's Sister and I have to say that the man can REALLY act. I know H2H had a makjang-ish second half but I liked his acting and the OTP's interaction nontheless. K-ent needs to give a further boost to good, solid artists who don't sell the boy image and prefer to act instead. I'm so happy for Jin Goo and all the recognition he's getting right now because I knew he had amazing skills ever since he was younger (that's why I feel like the coach who had scouted first a promising, talented athlete). I really, really wish a big hit for Chun Jung Myung as well.

I love him in few of his dramas esp What's Up Fox and H2H. I also love that one funny movie with Lee Min Jung. JYP also made a dorky cameo. He was funny. :)
Good to know he is back into the mainstream tv after how many years. I look forward to this.

I really liked him in Heart to Heart. He was so insufferable at first but the personality flip that happened early in the series was great and he projected a lot of layers and depth through the whole thing. Really all the actors on that show did a lot with the material and I think it's an underrated gem.

I've only seen him in H2H and What's Up Fox. I loved H2H and thought he was perfect in it. I didn't like What's Up Fox but it had nothing to do with his acting so I have no problem with this casting.

oh no....! Both to Lee Je-Hoon saying no, and to this new choice. I was so looking forward to this new series, but this does not really do it for me. I saw him in Glory Jane, he is cute, but not an outstanding actor, in my mind, certainly not one worthy of staring with Jo Jae-Hyeon. I want a terrific actor next to Jo Jae-Hyeon, (just as we had Kim Rae-Won playing with him in "Punch"). I hope both Jo Jae-Hyeon and Han Ye-Ri turn it down, so I can just avoid this drama. Sad. I actually like culinary drama, and was looking forward to seeing a new sexy noodle chef...

I know It's terrible but that is exactly what I hope to happen. Jo Jae-Hyeon and Han Ye-Ri to be out of this so I don't have to watch it. They are two of my auto follow actors.

Chun Jung-myung was great in OCN's procedural thriller, Reset, from 2014. This kind of reminds me of the Japanese film, Tampopo, which has been described as a "ramen western" instead of a spaghetti western. It also deals with noodle masters and apprentice noodle makers and is kind of hilarious but played completely straight. I'm going to check Time of the Beast out for sure. The idea of using noodles for revenge, especially involving a hero with an amnesiac father who can’t walk and an herb-gatherer mother who’s mute, seems to have the potential for a few laughs. I am laughing right now.

I am very curious of how he will approach the drama. He is alwyas been a good actor even in Man of Honour which also rated well. However he has shown outstanding performance in his last two dramas and somewhat he engaged different styles. I wonder how he is going to do this one. Hope he gets to partner with a good leading lady.

You're right. His role in Reset as well as his performance in it were not the usual kdrama approach. But he definitely needs a leading lady who can act just like in Heart 2 Heart.
