Namgoong Min lands lead role in Beast’s Beauty for SBS

Yay for Namgoong Min (Remember—Son’s War), who’s coming off a string of scene-stealing villain roles to land his first lead role in a broadcast drama, which is tentatively titled Beast’s Beauty. He must’ve made a good impression on his Girl Who Sees Smells producers, since that drama’s PD and writer are the ones behind this new drama, also for SBS. He is confirmed, while Baek Jin-hee (My Daughter Geum Sa-wol) is currently considering.

Namgoong Min recently said he wanted to stop playing drama villains, and this’ll give him a good opportunity to do so; it tells the story of one man’s struggle-filled life and the love that blossoms in it. I know, a terribly generic description, but it is a drastic turnaround from the drama’s original premise: When initially announced, it was titled Dance With You and about an idol producer, but everything’s been scrapped and the only things remaining are the producers.

The main character has a “manly appearance with a childlike smile,” which means either Namgoong Min was perfectly cast or the description was written about him. His name is Ahn Dan-te, which… really? Andante? Are you sure you’re not a music drama anymore? He’s the best fighter around and an ex-con who’s sent to prison on a false charge, then also a human rights lawyer and even a chaebol heir. Wait, what? I guess they really do mean it when they call his a roller-coaster life.

Baek Jin-hee’s character is a hard-working young woman struggling to land a job, which is a description I can easily see her in (and have seen her in, say in High Kick 3). I’m sure it’ll all make sense in the end, right? I do have some faith in the writer, who has penned some very charming dramas like Bad Family and Rooftop Prince, as well as the melodrama Yawang. Ah, in any case I’ll be happy to see Namgoong Min take the lead for once! Also, not killing or in murderous rages all the time, even if he’s so very good at that.

Beast’s Beauty will follow Mrs. Cop 2 on weekends, premiering May 14.

What's wrong with her? I think I quite like her.

Oh please. Just because her character was terrible in MDGSW doesn't mean she's a bad actress. Case in point: Oh Yeon-seo who's killing it on CBM yet starred in that makjang fest Jang Bori

And both makjang are penned by the same writer, and she has the knack of ruining her lead titular characters. (Even oh yeon seo subtlety implied her disappointment about it in an interview).

I feel sorry that she wasn't able to give justice to her acting because her character in the drama was so poorly developed. It is nice that at least some of us realize that BJH was just doing her job by following her script because many people blamed her for the way her character was heading towards the middle of the drama. It literally felt like to stab to her fans and I feel sorry for the actress and I hope she will never work with this writer again and possibly reconsider most of the dramas she is offered to act in.

I agree! I'm a huge fan of Baek Jinhee and she is literally my favourite actress so last year was a really difficult year, what with her being kicked out of SFD and being slammed by the knetz when she was just following a bad script. I really have mixed feelings because I trust this writer yet I really want her to have a breakout role in a primetime drama ): Here's to hoping whatever she does next turns out amazing!

Kicked out of six flying dragons? I thought she dropped out of the drama on her own to star in mdgsw. I hope she wasn't kick out.

My reason not wanting her here because she just finished her weekend drama, and now another weekend drama again. This girl should carefully consider her future projects so she would not typecasted.

I will prefer to the one who played Oh Wol in the same drama with her to be casted in a lead role.

True, but the actress playing oh wol also just finished her weekend drama. She was given a way bigger role in the drama than the lead actress. BJH may have appeared as a weak actress in MDGSW, but it is not her fault. She did quite well in her previous dramas..

Yep,another candy girl but i'll keep my assumptions at bay until it comes out.
One of the most relatable candy girls I've ever seen in dramaland is Kim Go Eun's Hong Seol from Cheese In The Trap....wait, are we supposed to not talk about that? But I still love it...Ah bittersweet *sobs*

I initially confused it with that Dr. Frankenstein drama and immediately said don't do it! But this one sounds better than that - somewhat.

I admittedly used to really dislike NGM. He always felt so fake playing the nice guy - like he had this alternate agenda. Both in INR and MSH, I just hated his character despite the production expecting me to like him initially. Then he really turned it around as a villain. I was so taken by how subtle and convincing he was. So now... Going back to being nice? I hope he can still be as great. I'm rooting for him!

Yessssss! Baek Jinhee in a romcom!!! Geum Sawol really did not do her justice at all and she really needs a great PD-writer team to give her a refreshing character to work with. The synopsis of this sounds pretty cliche but I like how this writer is great at turning cliches around. Really hope that it turns out to be a magical piece that will give them both the big break they deserve :)

Nope. I have to disagree. The male lead's character is refreshing, but the female lead is cliche as f*ck. It would be smart if BJH declines the role, but I doubt she will. She's pretty stupid when picking dramas. No matter how great she did as Tanashiri, this actress had most misses than hits after Empress Ki. I think it would be a smart move for her to take on more riskier/diverse roles. An unemployed woman caught in between a love triangle with two brothers? Meh...sounds like she already played this role in Triangle.

THIS!! I totally forgot she was in Triangle, thats how unmemorable her character was. Come to think of it, the female storyline IS similar to that of Triangle's. wow. She should know better not to consider this role, but she's not very smart (as evidenced by her drama choices). She's already "positively" considering the role, so you know what that means. Looks like I am not going to be watching her dramas for awhile, until maybe (probably never) she pick better projects.

Quite happy for him getting at last his first leading role in one of the BIG 3 but now i really hope the script will deliver and he did indeed have luck or insight in picking it,i like the leads a lot so far so i'm quite curious seeing him play a lead and i guess we'll see some pieces on a small scale of his bad boy and now he's even a lawyer besides a chabol and ex con,he has it all,i know he can deliver so i hope he has material for it

I hope Baek Jin-hee doesn't take this, SBS weekend dramas have been doing badly for years now and she deserves better than to be in a surefire ratings turkey. Unless they're offering her a subsequent weekday drama lead role to sweeten the pot.

In my opinion, I Have A Lover was in another level of weekend drama. Even its rating was the lowest, it is still a good drama and melodrama at that, The plot is not flawless, but still gave us satisfaction.

If only the drama was not began with story of a cheating husband, I think the rating was not suffered that much. Regardless of its rating, the leads still managed to get many awards, even Kim Hyun Joo was among the Daesang contestants.

I still 'traumatised' with her character in Geum Sa Wol. This drama did well in rating, unfortunately I hated her character so much and wanted to kill off her character. lol.

She should carefully choose drama and role. And I dont think she should do another weekend drama after her last drama just ended last month. Unless the character is something new and she never do it before. from the description, I can see the character is too easy for her.

Can she be Tanashiri once again?

I am also traumatized with the entire drama, especially with her idiotic character. I don't think I can watch her ever again without getting that Sa Wol character off my mind. I don't even understand why the ratings were so high; every scene in that drama had my blood boil.

She has already played this kind of character in Triangle: unemployed woman caught in between a love triangle. *yawns. The male leads and the other less prominent casts will definitely outshine her.

Man, is she in her right mind? Stop acting in every godamn drama offered to you. At least take the time to consider what would role best fits you or take the time to hone your acting skills!! ><

I don't see her taking on weekend dramas as an issue, but to act in this type of role.. that's the real problem here. She seems to be the favorite candidate to act in dramas with first male lead actors. Believe me, Nam Goong Min is an excellent actor, but the female character should be given to someone else. BJH should be at the stage in her career where she should take on more diverse roles! As if her Geum Sa Wol character wasn't a huge humiliation to her acting already.. How irritating.

Yay finally something new for NGM! But that character though... as if the writer summarized every Kdrama ever written and made this one.

BJH is one of my girl crushes! So pretty. But I didn't like her 2 previous dramas- the prosecutor and GSW.

Anyway about the story.. so NGM is wrongfully accused, lawyer now, also chaebol.. how will he meet BJH? She'll work for him? Meh kinda boring. But we'll see.

I also must say the new hair is really a look for him. If you had such a nice forehead you should have been showing it off all this time, dude!

These character descriptions are making me laugh though. I do like the idea of an everything but the kitchen sink male lead but why are my girls always in the struggle? I'll leave it up to the writer to add something different. And the PD and NM work well together so it should be fun. Love Baek Jin Hee and if she signs on I'll be all the happier.

Didn't realize this was his first lead role in a broadcast drama. Glad he got it though.

I first saw him in Secret Hotel (terrible drama!), but he impressed me in Remember - Son's War.
He was very convincing as a villain. It will be nice to see him in a different role...
But the main character is really an ex-con, lawyer, and an heir in this drama??? So strange..

This one...I have little faith that it will succeed given that it is a weekend drama and you know.. SBS have had a history of poor ratings for their weekend dramas. I just hope she would pick a better drama. Watching her character in MDGSW felt like a huge stab to her fans due to the way it was so poorly written. It is about time for BJH to choose a better drama.

I agree with all the comments about jin hee. I was hoping she would take on a much more diverse role. I have already watched many of her dramas, but only two stood out to me -- High Kick and Empress Ki. If I didn't watch these two dramas, I would have never believe this actress can act at all. For the those who are bashing her acting in MDGSW, I am pretty sure any actress out there who took the role of Sa Wol would get bashed as well. No matter how great an actress is, there is just no hope saving such a deeply flawed character or in MDGSW's case, a deeply flawed drama.

Pride and Prejudice was great until the writer screwed up there latter half. I can see why people would say she does not have any chemistry with her male characters, but she did very well with Park Seo Joon. I was hoping they can act together again, but I doubt it since they were caught in a dating rumor twice.
