Marriage Contract: Episode 5

It’s difficult enough to pull off an illegal organ-selling scam, but when emotions start to get involved, things start to get really complicated. Ji-hoon, especially, is beginning to feel things he never expected, though the object of his affection may surprise us. It’s amazing how much a tiny little sprite of a girl can affect the big grump, and she could very well be the key to opening his heart.

EPISODE 5 RECAP

Ji-hoon follows little Eun-sung outside, where she throws the pilfered “wedding” photo of him and her mother at his feet. Hye-soo follows them out, but before anyone realizes what’s happening, Na-yoon also arrives and sees the photo lying in the street. Luckily, she can only see Hye-soo’s face clearly in the photo, and Hye-soo manages to snap it up before she sees any more.

Hye-soo chases after Eun-sung, and Na-yoon comments that the guy in the photo sort of looked like Ji-hoon. He plays dumb, and Na-yoon lets the subject drop.

By the time Hye-soo catches up to her daughter, Eun-sung is feeling guilty about ripping the pictures and she apologizes. They walk back towards the restaurant hand-in-hand.

Na-yoon compliments Ji-hoon on the success of his restaurant, then not-so-casually asks about Hye-soo and Eun-sung. Ji-hoon redirects, asking why she’s here, put out that she came here unannounced. She’s honest and says she missed him.

He gets a text from the hospital social worker saying that they’re ready to meet Eun-sung, and he claims an urgent meeting. He turns back, and Na-yoon looks like a smug cat — until he asks her not to come to Promise anymore.

Hye-soo and Eun-sung stop to talk, Hye-soo asking if Eun-sung hates Ji-hoon that much. Eun-sung just turns it around on her: Does Mom like him that much? She asks what Hye-soo likes about him and, unaware that Ji-hoon is standing right behind her, Hye-soo is honest.

She says that he’s not a bad guy, even though she used to think so, but she’s learned that he has a kind heart. Just like Eun-sung’s kitten who cries sometimes, but it just means she’s scared. Ji-hoon looks disgruntled, but also a bit moved to hear that. He makes kitty faces at Eun-sung, who grins at him for a second, despite herself.

She runs off again, but only goes as far as a pair of dancing guys, and Hye-soo finally sees Ji-hoon there. He tells her about the interview, but says that he’ll take care of it. He’s confident they won’t fail them just because they don’t bring Eun-sung, but Hye-soo isn’t so sure.

Chairman Han asks Jung-hoon if Ji-hoon is dating anyone, which puts Jung-hoon off his food and he storms from the dinner table. His mother follows to ask if he’s sick, then wonders if something is wrong between him and Na-yoon. Jung-hoon snaps that she wants to break things off with him and that she likes someone else.

Chairman Han calls Ji-hoon when he can’t reach Mi-ran, and Ji-hoon lies that his mother is traveling. It makes the chairman suspicious since it doesn’t match with what Mi-ran told him the last time they spoke, so Ji-hoon makes an excuse and hangs up.

Mi-ran is at the hospital thinking about Hye-soo, and how she desperately begged her to live. She’s refusing to eat, worrying the nurses, but she’s too upset over the illegal lengths her son is going to try to save her.

That evening Hye-soo leaves Eun-sung tucked into bed and goes out for fresh air, then when Ji-hoon gets home, she goes around to his front door to speak with him. She asks if they can’t delay the interviews instead, and gain some time for him to win over Eun-sung. They’re already in this deep, they may as well do everything they can to avoid suspicion.

Hye-soo hides when Na-yoon rings the doorbell, and she literally pushes her way inside, fighting back when Ji-hoon frantically tries to pull her outside. She’s drunk, and tells him that his order not to come to his restaurant just made her want to go there even more.

She tells Ji-hoon that she plans to break things off with Jung-hoon, clearly expecting him to take her back right away. When he doesn’t, she asks if he doesn’t have feelings for her anymore. When he doesn’t answer she steps in and hugs him, asking in a small voice if they can start over.

Ji-hoon gently pries her off and offers to take her home, and when she starts pushing him for answers again, he snaps, “We’ll talk when you’re not drunk!” Na-yoon wants to talk now, but when he tries to steer her towards the door, she shakes off his hand and says she’ll go under her own steam.

But just when they’re about in the clear, Na-yoon sees the hiding Hye-soo in a reflection, and confronts her. She knows right away that this means it was Ji-hoon in the wedding photo, and though Hye-soo tries to deny it, Ji-hoon sees his opportunity and confirms Na-yoon’s suspicion.

He introduces Hye-soo as his fiancee, and Na-yoon seems angry but it does get her to leave. Hye-soo chases her, not wanting her to leave upset, but Ji-hoon holds her back and lets Na-yoon go with her dignity. Hye-soo yells at Ji-hoon to go after Na-yoon, saying that he’ll regret it if he doesn’t, but he just says it’s his business.

Hye-soo overheard enough to figure out that Na-yoon is his ex-girlfriend, and that he still has feelings for her. By studying up on him she knows all of his firsts (first date, first gift, etc) and can tell that those firsts were all with Na-yoon. She wants to explain everything to Na-yoon, so that Ji-hoon won’t lose this second chance with her.

She tells Ji-hoon that she didn’t get to say goodbye, or thank you, or “I love you” to her husband when he died, and she knows how heavy that regret can be. Ji-hoon finally yells at her to stop sticking her nose in his business and pushes her roughly out the front door, telling her not to think she can behave as though she’s really his wife — just stick to the contract.

Later that night, Eun-sung wakes up just enough to see her mom looking at pictures of her on her phone. They make plans to go see Eun-sung’s father, and leave a current photo of Eun-sung for him. Eun-sung asks if Hye-soo is going to tell her father that she has a new dad now, but Hye-soo just says that they’ll go because it’s been a while.

They go and leave the picture the next day, and Hye-soo talks to her husband as if he can still hear her. She doesn’t realize that his mother is also there, who sees Eun-sung, and seems to see something familiar about the little girl.

Hye-soo asks her husband’s memory for courage, and to watch over her and Eun-sung. Her mother-in-law hears her call out to Eun-sung and realizes that this is her granddaughter, watching as Hye-soo prompts Eun-sung to speak to her father. Hye-soo never sees her mother-in-law, but Eun-sung does, and waves at the lady as they leave.

Eun-sung sees that her mother is preoccupied on the ride home, and Hye-soo tells her that she misses her daddy. Eun-sung says honestly that she doesn’t miss him, having never met him (he died before she was born). She says that her dad doesn’t know anything about her — how much she’s grown, or that she’s lost a tooth, or how many times she can jump rope.

She tells her mom to just marry “that ajusshi,” since she says he’s not a bad person, so Eun-sung will believe her. She’ll try to like him, and then her mother won’t cry anymore. That just makes Hye-soo cry more, and she apologizes to Eun-sung and hugs her tight.

Ho-joon asks Ji-hoon what he plans to do about the hospital interview, since Hye-soo’s daughter doesn’t like him. He tells Ji-hoon that kids are easy, to just get her some candy, and nearly earns himself a pounding.

Ji-hoon meets the social worker alone, who pressures him to explain why he didn’t bring Eun-sung. Ji-hoon admits that the little girl doesn’t like him — even after two years, he can’t get close to her. He plays up his story, saying that he’s embarrassed that she doesn’t like him, so he can’t bring her to be interviewed but he’ll do anything else the social worker wants.

The social worker says that he’ll put all this in his report, and Ji-hoon barks at him that it’s not necessary. But before things escalate, Hye-soo shows up with Eun-sung, who says perfectly that this ajusshi is going to marry her mother and be her new daddy. They get rid of the social worker and Ji-hoon asks why Hye-soo brought Eun-sung, though he looks secretly pleased.

Mi-ran is waiting to see her doctor when she sees her son walk by, and follows him down the hall. She sees him with Hye-soo and Eun-sung and hangs back, watching as Eun-sung gives Ji-hoon the most grudging high-five ever. She follows Hye-soo when they split up, and catches up with her in the hospital lobby.

The two ladies sit to talk, and Mi-ran asks what Hye-soo meant when she said that she’ll die if Mi-ran dies. She backs off when Hye-soo looks shocked, claiming that she’s not curious anyway, though she does seem ready to accept the situation. She asks Hye-soo not to tell anyone what they’re doing, and Hye-soo assures her that she signed an agreement.

Ji-hoon fusses at his mother when she gets back to her hospital room, and she immediately blows up at him. She’s too scared not to accept what he’s offering, but she feels as though it makes her a bad mother to put her son in such a dangerous position.

Seung-joo catches Hye-soo’s mother in law looking at the photo of Eun-sung that she took from her son’s memorial, and she tells him that she’s going to see Hye-soo. She says she’s just going to take some clothes for Eun-sung then come home, but Seung-joo urges her not to do it — if she can’t really help them, it’s best to keep her distance. He confesses that Hye-soo is seeing someone, and that finally makes her stop.

Chairman Han grows more upset when Mi-ran still won’t answer his calls, and he’s not buying the story that she’s traveling. He calls Ji-hoon who makes excuses not to come see him, but he’s dsitracted from them when his wife tells him that Na-yoon plans to break off her engagement to Jung-hoon. That makes the chairman angry and he blames Jung-hoon — after all, his first wife left him after only a month. Ouch.

Promise is hopping busy, and chef Chang-soo yells at Ho-joon for not making sure they had enough food for a large wedding reservation. Joo-yeon is too busy to watch Eun-sung when Hye-soo will be late getting home, so Ji-hoon offers to watch the little girl. Ha, he still manages to cluck at Hye-soo for thinking about other things besides work (can’t have her thinking he’s a nice guy, you know!).

Eun-sung isn’t pleased when Ji-hoon picks her up at school, and aww, Ji-hoon looks nervous. They talk on the walk to his car, about the problems associated with running a restaurant versus kindergarten, and eventually Eun-sung asks Ji-hoon an important question: Does he love her mom?

He mutters that he does, looking flustered, but he’s really gobsmacked when Eun-sung tells him not to leave like her father did. She says to stay a long time, which seems to upset Ji-hoon, since he knows that the plan is for them to get a divorce as soon as possible.

He puts Eun-sung in his car and gets a call from the social worker, who has good news — the surgery has been approved. Ji-hoon smiles, looking like the weight of the world is off his shoulders, but he sobers up a little when he looks at Eun-sung and thinks about the unexpected cost of their plans.

Chang-soo grouchily praises Hye-soo for her hard work, and she’s called outside to see her mother-in-law waiting for her. She returns the photo of Eun-sung and tells Hye-soo never to go to her son’s memorial again. She’s angry that Hye-soo went there when she’s dating again, even accusing her of planning to dump Eun-sung on her so she can start a new life.

Hye-soo is too stricken to really defend herself, but just as her mother-in-law starts to work herself up to a screaming fury, Ji-hoon arrives with Eun-sung. Her mother-in-law sees them and pulls herself together, leaving in a huff.

Hye-soo follows, and Ji-hoon follows Hye-soo, so he’s there to see her mother-in-law shove her so hard that she falls to the ground. With fire in her eyes, Mother-in-law says for them to have a nice life together, and not to abandon Eun-sung. Hye-soo wants to follow her again, but Ji-hoon wisely holds her back.

He sees that Hye-soo’s hand is sliced open, and yells at her, “Why are you doing all this? He may be Eun-sung’s father, but he did nothing for her.” She turns back and in a calm voice that belies her tears, she says that her husband was a good person. “I’m the one who changed.”

Ji-hoon barks that he couldn’t have been that nice if he left them so soon, but Hye-soo replies that nobody wants to die young. She says that he was a better man than Ji-hoon, and heads back to the restaurant.

Ji-hoon trails behind her, and finally tells her that they passed the screening, so they need to go to the hospital tomorrow to schedule the surgery. Hye-soo finally smiles, relieved, but for some reason Ji-hoon gets snarky that she’s so happy to be selling her liver. Confused, Hye-soo tells him that she’s just glad there won’t be any complications, and starts to go in.

But Ji-hoon yells at her, “Why do you keep living like a fool?!” She turns back in surprise, and even Ji-hoon looks shocked at his outburst. He tells her that he’ll file for divorce as soon as possible, and pleads with Hye-soo to meet someone worthy of her in the future.

In the morning Chairman Han goes looking for Ji-hoon and Mi-ran, increasingly suspicious when neither of them are where they’re supposed to be. The concierge at Mi-ran’s apartment tells him she’s in the hospital, and we see that she’s getitng his messages but deliberately ignoring them.

Hye-soo comes to see Mi-ran and tell her that they’ve scheduled the surgery, and also to bring her some porridge. Ji-hoon is on his way, but he falters when he sees his father in the hospital lobby, and tries to stop him. He loses him in the elevator, and has to take another one up to his mother’s floor.

Mi-ran and Hye-soo are joined by the doctor, who congratulates them on passing the screening, and they both freeze up when Chairman Han enters the room. Ji-hoon comes running in a second later, but he’s too late — his father just asked the doctor who Hye-soo is, revealing that he doesn’t know the woman who’s supposed to be his daughter-in-law.

Mi-ran asks the doctor to leave so they can all talk, and luckily he doesn’t seem to have caught on to the awkwardness. Mi-ran lies that Hye-soo is her nurse and that she likes her so much she calls her “daughter-in-law,” but the chairman just wants to know why she’s in the hospital.

She admits that she’s here because of liver damage, and Hye-soo excuses herself from the room. Chairman Han watches her sharply as she goes, but he’s more concerned about Mi-ran, and yells at her until she clutches her chest. She screams at him to leave, and never come back.

Ji-hoon walks his father out, and Chairman Han asks why he kept her illness a secret. Ji-hoon says that he never cared about her before, so he didn’t think he’d be interested now.

They see Hye-soo bringing back some drinks, and Chairman Han snaps that he doesn’t believe she’s a nurse. He asks Ji-hoon who she really is, and Ji-hoon and Hye-soo look at each other, unsure of what to say.

COMMENTS

I love that we’re getting to see little glimpses of Ji-hoon’s emotional side, finally, since he’s such a difficult read. When he blew up at Hye-soo for being so happy about the surgery, you could see that even he doesn’t understand himself and what he’s feeling right now. I think that Hye-soo and Eun-sung are really getting under his skin — not that he has romantic feelings for Hye-soo, not yet anyway, but he just feels for her situation and what she’s going through. He’s starting to feel badly that his being in her life is causing issues for her, even as it solves a lot of her problems, and I think he’s not used to caring about other people so he’s just not sure what to do with himself.

I do think it will be Eun-sung who breaks down his walls, and she’s already starting to chip away at the little cracks in his armor. When she asked him not to leave her mom like her father did, Ji-hoon looked so stricken, knowing that he plans to leave as soon as he can. He may be a grump, but he’s not heartless, and you can see that he doesn’t want to hurt anyone. But he didn’t plan on Eun-sung being so insightful and outspoken, and it’s obvious that he isn’t looking forward to letting her down.

Eun-sung is really turning out to be the heart and soul of this show, and I love how she’s making Ji-hoon rethink how he uses people. She just about broke my heart in this episode, when she told Hye-soo to go ahead and marry Ji-hoon. Even though she’s never known her father, it’s obvious that she feels the lack of a father figure, even if she can only express it in terms a child would understand. It’s so sweet that she’s willing to trust her mother and give Ji-hoon a chance, just in case it gets her the father she misses.

Hye-soo is also very difficult to read, and I feel as though there’s a lot to her background that we still have to learn that will explain her actions. I do like that the show doesn’t give us every detail up front, but it can also be a bit confusing when you just really want to understand why a character is doing something and you don’t have the information to put it together. Such as how it feels as though somehow, in Hye-soo’s mind, Mi-ran’s survival has become linked with her own. I don’t quite understand how she’s made that connection, but when she begged her in the street to live, because she (Hye-soo) wants so badly to live, it felt as though she’s instinctively decided that by saving Mi-ran’s life, her own will be saved. Hye-soo is such a closed book, even to us as viewers, that it’s hard to decipher what she’s thinking sometimes. With any other character I would assume it’s because she’ll have the money to pay for her own treatment, but Hye-soo seems too emotionally-driven to think so simply. Her survival rate is low, so even if she saves Mi-ran’s life and gets her own treatment, there’s no guarantee that saving Mi-ran’s life will mean Hye-soo also survives.

So I was actually a little surprised when Hye-soo was so adamant about telling Na-yoon the truth, because this whole scheme hinges on keeping the secret about their marriage not being real. Letting in an ex-girlfriend who Hye-soo doesn’t know (and doesn’t know if she’s trustworthy) seems like a pretty high risk, since Na-yoon could decide to blow the whole thing wide open. Hye-soo is a very sweet woman, and very empathetic, so I can understand her feelings about not wanting Ji-hoon to lose this second, and probably last, chance with his first love. Plus, she’s in a position to know how short life and love can be. But I’m surprised that she was so insistent, so quickly. You’d think she’d at least want to think about it before pushing him so hard to tell Na-yoon the truth.

Really, the only character I don’t love in this drama is Na-yoon. She seems like such a cardboard-cutout of a second lead, that it makes her feel out of place, and it’s jarring whenever she’s on the screen. I’ll never understand these characters who decide that a person belongs to them just because they want them to, and behave as though they have every right to barge in on their lives unwanted and unwelcome. Especially when the object of their affection makes it clear that they are strongly unwelcome. And it’s a shame, because I really like Kim Yuri as an actress, so to see her in such a one-dimensional role is disheartening. Not to mention, it strips her scenes of any tension because her behavior is so unreasonable. It’s still early and I can see potential for Na-yoon as a more rounded-out character, so I still have hope — we’ll see as we get deeper into the story.

Am loving this drama. Why are the re-caps so behind? Thanks anyway!!

It's because they didn't start recapping until the show was already airing. The other recappers we're already doing other dramas.

Because they have a lot of catching up to do. But whatever happens I am patiently waiting for Db recaps of Marriage Contract.

If this catches up to the current episodes, I swear I think I won't be able to handle my comments... Because of my spur of the moment with the episode... Or because of my frustration of what's gonna happen next!!

Db is kind to let me discipline myself, to control myself, in the matters of "Marriage Contract." You can say I'm addicted to it now.

Would anyone know the YT link of Ji-hoon's phone ringtone? I have heard it before, but I don't know the name of the piece. If anyone knows the YT link to that instrumental piece, I would appreciate it if you would post it here. Thank you!

I've been wondering the same question! It reminds me of country/oldfolk song? I used to have a friend who perform a song that has a similar tune to the ringtone. She perform it together with Red River Valley (thats why I thought its an old song).

Might be wrong tho..

Yes, I believe that piece has been around for a while. I remember hearing it a long time ago, I think. Thank you for your added info.

Say thanks to Shazam! ^^

It is called Mo' Better Blues performed by Brandford Marsalis Quartet. Apparently its a musical drama film.

I'm wondering if this is Lee Seo Jin's type of songs or if it came from the producer.

Honestly I feel like Kim Yoo-Ri is always in that role of the unwanted lover, I don't know if she can play anything else. The only time I have seen her have a happy ending was in Master's Sun and that was only at the very end T_T

The actress is gorgeous and needs to choose more roles that do her justice and further her career in a positive way!

Same! And she was ok in beyond the clouds too. But she played this EXACT same role in Kill me heal me which is quite frustrating..I honestly don't know how the actresses do it.

I've seen up to episode 8 and no her character doesn't improve...it actually gets worse! Which is said because she sticks out like a sore thumb next to everyone else. I would go as far as saying she is delusioned because of the way she acts in episode 8 but won't say more here.

I believe I've never seen Kim Yoo Ri in any other kind of role except 2nd lead female in love triangle and usually unpleasant, bratty and just plain unlikable. I have no clue if she has lots more talent, poor actress!

I know, right? I've seen her in KMHM, Eundong, and Master's Sun and she has the same role, like are you serious? I really want to see her in a drama with a different role, anything!

@judy2001

Totally agree! I feel she has pigeon-holed herself into the bitchy second lead role, she plays in every drama I have watched her. Now it looks like she's typecast. Because it seems she isn't playing anyone else. I don't know if it's because she isn't cast for other roles or if she just wants to remain in her comfort zone, but I would be so happy if she broke out of this mold and tried something else, maybe even played a detective or a mom for a change.

What blows me away is that Chairman Dad, who not only has no familial tie with Mi Ran but also has treated her pretty badly overall, gets to waltz right into a doctor/patient conference like he owns the place. How did he even get past the front desk?! Are random old men allowed to just coast around hospitals, barging in on chronically ill patients and berating them? I wanted a doctor to pop up and firmly show Chairman Dad the way out.

I guess in dramaland, chairman dads can barge into a patient's room, and speak rudely to them? I wondered if it was because he seemed to be wearing expensive clothes (and he had his secretary with him, didn't he?), and had someone who looked like he was working for him, that people might have assumed that he was an "important," person and they just let him waltz in? Not that it is an excuse for his behavior, mind you. It seemed to me, that people did not even pay attention to him, as he walked by the front desk, and went upstairs. The doctor didn't seem surprised to see him there either. Maybe he just assumed he was a family member?

I gotta agree with the assessment of Na-yoon. She's just a bratty princess who thinks she can get what she wants, and (slight spoiler) she's gotten worse. It's a crying shame that the only thing I have to wonder is whether she really was like this in the past or not. She DID seem really hurt over Ji-Hoon's breakup...

She should be given a chance to show her sweet side. She was absolutely adorable in Master's Sun.

Revisiting a recap brought back some fine points regarding Hye-Soo's backstory. It almost sounds as if before he died, Hye-Soo had snapped at her husband and yelled a lot. Given the fact that her husband had borrowed money and Hye-Soo was pregnant, perhaps its understandable why she did(assuming that that's part of the story). In fact, Hye-Soo's guilt could be part of the reason she so adamantly praises her husband and why she urges Ji-Hoon on the Na-Yoon issue so readily.

This show really hit gold with Eun-Sung in it. How the heck is this actress THIS good at this age? The expressions on her face are phenomenal, and her voice is great too. Getting Ji Hoon to dance around her little finger is a great bonus.

As for the chairman, well, this drama's got one smart guy. It's like before him, he sees through everything and nobody holds any power. Dread the Chairman Lord!!!

Thank you for the recap as well! I absolutely loved that conversation between ES and JH as well, and I thought it was a great way for them to bond, and get a little closer to one another. It reminded me of that finding/article JH had read online about listening to children, if one wanted to come to be liked by them. As they were talking, I was thinking in my head, “JH, this is an opportunity for you to come to know (and hopefully) understand ES. Please listen to her”

I loved ES’s “Ha, BUT you don’t understand how hard it is to be in kindergarten. The other children act like babies (or something along those lines), and then (Oh my goodness), I have to eat spinach too. Spinach!!!! I have to eat them (because I am told to eat them), *Sigh* You can’t be having it as hard as I do, can you?” And JH, “what do you mean kindergarten is hard? All you have to do is play and have fun all day? Do you know how hard it is to run a business/restaurant?” Just watching the two of them walking (him behind her), and talking brought a huge smile to my face. That scene was awesome.

Hi back annflln, *waves*
Yes! That scene was SOOOO adorable, I simply loved it. Who knew right, that a kindergartener's life could be SOOOOOO hard?!!!!! LOL... One thing about ES though, is that she is comfortable with adults, have you noticed that? This actress works really well with adults, all of them in the drama.

It IS very cute! I love how casually the conversation starts, when JH asks her how her day at kindergarten went, probably to make conversation, so they don't have a dead silence. And then she turns it around and ASKS him the same question.

After a few minutes of that, It is as if she is saying, "enough with the chitchat, let's be serious for a minute. Do you LOVE my mom?" Notice that she didn't say "like," but "love," and the conversation got serious, she really wanted to know. I love how innocently she asked. And when JH said "what do you know about love?" It felt as if she was saying "who do you take me for? Who doesn't know about love? I'm not a baby you know, I am 7 years old."

As they say, "from the mouth of babes," and that little girl can be deep at times :-)

I just rewatched that conversation, and I noticed a few things: I love how they start walking in tandem, that is SOOOO adorable. Also, when she asks him if he loves her mom, her gaze stays on him the WHOLE time, because she IS serious, and she really wants to know. I think JH can see that, and it makes him very uncomfortable. He doesn't know what to say, so she asks, AGAIN. ES really wants to make sure this
man will treat her mother right, so she keeps looking at him. And for her, that's not all. "IF he loves her, HOW much DOES he love her?"

Last thing I just noticed, when she tells him, "you can't leave my mom. You can't go to heaven by yourself (like my dad did, leaving her miserable here, and overwhelmed), she has that look on her face that to me says "please PROMISE me you won't do that," and that gets to me, and to JH as well I think. So he becomes more uncomfortable, and he kind of lashes out at HS later, maybe because he knows he won't be able to keep his promise to ES (but we really hope he will, don't we?)
This drama has some really lovely scenes.

Thanks for much for the review! I'm hooked on this drama after catching up from the recaps ----

So the thing about Hye-soo linking her life with Mi-ran's life : if Mi-ran refuses the surgery, then Hye-soo's solution (money owed to loan sharks, ability to pay for treatment, or ability to provide for her daughter after her death) goes up into nothingness. So Mi-ran can't die, but she must live and have this surgery.

At this point, no one else knows about Hye-soo's tumor (sans herself and doctor), so it looks like a money grab for Mi-ran and Ji-Hoon, Hye-soo's friend and even the Ji-hoon's father. But we can see that because Hye-soo's pretty much already given up on her life --- even with expensiveeee treatment, how will she still take care of Eun-sang??--- that's what drove her to this desperate illegal thing. So When Hye-soo says "we must both live" I didn't see it as literally Hye-soo seeing some supernatural linking of both living on - but the one possible way she can provide (make do) for Eun-sang..

I totally agree with your assessment of Hye-soo's "you have to live so I can live" reasoning.

Yes, I saw her statement about both being able to live in a broader application that Eun Sung's life could be better guaranteed. She wanted enough money to cover Eun Sung's life until she could fend for herself. That would fall through if she did not meet her end of the contract, plus she would have to repay the money already given to her. She is such a stickler for being honest and keeping to the deal that she would feel beholden to honor all terms of the contract.

If Eun Sung's life was going to be badly affected, Hye Soo would feel that she couldn't live... is also quite a plausible scenario. Therefore at all cost, she did not want to fail in keeping her part of the deal.

Hi GB unni,
So well said!!!!! By the way, I saw your comments on DotS, ep.10 recap, and have not been able to respond, even though I wanted to, and even though I actually have things to say back (you know me unni :-) ). Will try to get to them before the next recap. Really thought my weekend would go better, sorry :-( I always love reading your thoughts, as you know.

That was also how I had read HS's plea about you have to live, so I can live. I took it as HS providing for her daughter, and in so doing, "living" by leaving such a legacy: that (even if she didn't live, and died), she would have done all she could for her daughter, and in a way, she would continue to live through her, just like in a way, her deceased husband lives through ES, since she is a child they created together.

I really love the emotional scenes in this drama, they are so well done, and they really get to me. I love the relationship between mother and daughter, and the love they have for each other. It is what makes them yield to what the other wants. I did love that ES didn't do a 180 and wholeheartedly accepted JH, still giving him the cold shoulder, and letting him know that he had not won her over yet. That process was believable.

I also love HS's friend, who really is like a sister to HS, and a great aunty to ES. I have watched up to ep.8 as well, and I love her interactions with both the daughter and the mom. I also love how the chef, and that server who knows HS care about her, and how they are protective of her.

I also love HJ, he is entertaining and funny. I was smiling when he was dancing, and I am glad to see him back in a drama with LSJ.

I really enjoyed the "Cat" analogy, and I will not forget it, a great explaination from the mom. I appreciate how they value the little girls understanding in this drama, you can see how the mom is always trying to help her daughter understand the things that are happening. I like seeing how precious the mom and daughter are to each other, I have an idea that that is what is affecting Ji-hoon, to see love for real and in action.

I feel that Ji Hoon is seeing in Hye Soo's and Eun Sung's relationship, what he did have for a while in his own childhood and then lost. He's seeing that a mother can give up her all for her child... as he is now risking so much to save his mother, but at the same time, he is starting to feel guilty that he's using a mother's great need for his own benefit.

He's seeing that Eun Sung unselfishly cares for her mother's well being. He knows she does not like him but she has back tracked to accept him for her mother's sake. There is nothing contrived or manipulated in the love of Hye Soo and Eun Sung. It's to his credit that he does not gloat that it's all going his way and that he has manipulated things so well to suit himself,

Thanks LollyPip!

My great liking for this show just grows. Every step of the way in the relationship growth is sweet and understandable.

Tha little girl is such a gem as actress and child character. I believe many of the decisions to come will be taken because of her, even though she will not know or engineer it. Right now, she generously eases her mum's loneliness and worry in deciding to let her marry, and she gets ahjusshi in the heart by showing her mature care for her mum. That conversation is one of my favourites... beginning with Ahjusshi's question: "Is kindergarten fun?" and the smart retort, "Is running a restaurant fun?... There are lots of problems I have to face in kindergarten!" Just love that child!

By far, my favorite drama which is currently airing. Marriage Contract is sooooo good. I mean if you want to feel the promised chemistry, you have to check this out. Great chemistry, and my heart is not tired of feeling this. Thank you Lee Seo-jin and UEE.

And for me, what came after that conversation was equally endearing and touching. "Do you love my mom?" I felt that JH was telling her what she would want to hear, especially since he was getting ready to marry her mom. I didn't get the sense that he believed what he told her. And when he said, "what do you know about love?" I absolutely LOVED her "who doesn't know about love?" and how serious she was when she said that. And then she added the "(please) don't leave my mom, like my dad did. Don't go to heaven by yourself." Hoooof! She got me with that one.

She has a way of looking at adults straight in their face that I find disarming. I love how charming she can be, honest, and as you said, as time goes by, not manipulative. I'm soooo impressed with this young actress. She has great chemistry with everyone she shares a scene with, and her emotions/emoting feel real and organic. I keep wanting to see how she is being coached and prepared for her scenes, and who does it with her. She is a gem and a pleasure to watch.

@ GB Unni,

Yeah, at this point, based on his reaction, I don't think he thinks or realizes that he is starting to care about HS, He he...
And I loved that he brought his face close to her, as he asked her about knowing anything about love. Her face looked so open, so "readable," that is what I love about her, and about how she acts in the drama.

And about your second #, yes oh yes! So well said. And I think it might have taken JH by surprise, to realize that, that ES loves her mom that much, that she is willing to sacrifice for her. Might be why he yelled at her later, b/c he is starting to care and feel guilty.

I felt the same way, ie he himself was not convinced that he loved her mum, but he had to appease the little girl. But her replies and question and requests cut him perhaps to the heart.... meaning that he felt enough that he would not be able to totally disregard Eun Sung's request to not leave her mother.

It's so inspiring that when we think the adults have to take care of the child, the child has the maturity to put the adult first and is prepared to make the sacrifices to achieve this.

Re: Hye Sung wanting for Mi Ran to live

I also think this is less of a money thing and more of an emotional thing to HS. When you put it in black and white, what she's doing now (organ selling) is illegal and a bad thing and HS knows it. But she's justifying it to herself by saying this is how she'll support her daughter and also save a life (MR). So if MR dies, then what becomes of her justification? All she'll be left with is a bunch of money she earned by betraying her own morals. This is why I see her needing MR to live through this.

Wow! I had not thought of it in those terms. Thank you! Could it be both, that she cares about the money, as much as she cares about saving a life? For some reason, I still see her as someone who (strongly) wants her daughter to be provided for. I could be wrong, however that also seems to be a big worry for her. I hope I am making sense.

Would anyone happen to know the name of the instrumental guitar piece that they are using in the soundtrack?

It's towards the end of Ep 7. It's at 51:28 of this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upexhjuKjoc

Would be great if anyone could identify it!

Ok, I just listened to it. It is a beautiful instrumental piece, and sorry I can't help you with that. I wonder if it is a piece they composed for the drama, or one that already existed... done by someone. Those unfortunately are not mentioned on the CD ost, when it comes out. Maybe you could ask that same question on YouTube, in the comments section for that ep. That's all I can suggest for now.

So I originally was not going to watch this drama... because the premise reminded me of Super Daddy Yeol which is something I rather forget. But then I started to read these recaps and saw that it was something a lot of people were enjoying so I gave it a shot a couple days ago. I have watched all the episodes that have aired so far and I am really enjoying the drama!!!

So thank you for recapping, because without it I wouldn't have given it a chance!!!

Honestly, I'm watching this drama because of Lee Seo Jin. Haha. People wouldn't even know that there is age gap between LSJ & UEE.

I can see the difference between casting a male lead in their 20's/30's and 40's. They give a different vibe to the character.

I can feel the age gap and see it between both. It is hard for me to buy that JH is 37, but it is a drama, so it's not really important. I would admit that LSJ looks very good for someone who is 45/46 (in Korea). He is aging very well (like fine wine), and he has gravitas, and a presence.

Did you see the BTS? They were playing around during the photo shoot. Haha, I guess that's why I think they don't look awkward in their role.

I recently watch Grandpas Over Flower & 3 Meals A Day. Don't you think Ji Hoon character here and him in variety are quite similar? Both surely grumble a lot (heee!!) but have a warm heart inside.

Can't wait for more dimples!! ^^ *I seriously want to poke his dimples. lol

Hello again! Did you mean the BTS when they were all dressed up and taking pictures? If so, I just saw it. I think that video is like 2 minutes long or so. And yes, I agree with you, they were playing around, and they seemed comfortable with each other. That must have helped a lot when they actually started shooting. I love the chemistry we can already see there between Uee and LSJ.

I noticed that in the drama, LSJ's hair is colored in lighter shades of brown, which helps in making him look younger. Also, did you notice how he touched the little girl's face, was talking to her, while caressing her cheeks? So adorable! I think he likes her (and I don't mean that in a bad predatory way), and I think it helped break the ice as well with her. They all looked so good in that photoshoot :-)

@Ivoire

JH is soooo not convincing as a thirty-seven year old. Like you said, he has the gravitas of someone much older. I find that I have to constantly remind myself that Ji hoon is in his mid-thirties, but he has so much onscreen chemistry with UEE, that I can forgive him anything.

The story and the characters do suck you in and I am so in love with the child actress, she's really nailing her role in this drama, playing a child with the maturity of someone who is much older than a six year old.

I don't know about later, but I thought Na-yoon wasn't behaving too unreasonably in this episode. While it is true that Ji-hoon had told her to stay out of his life, it could be argued that what she had hitherto meant to him, and the circumstances in which they had parted (and which she understands much better now) kind of justify her believing that he still loved her. And she did split up with Jung-hoon first, which is quite a big step for a dutiful daughter to take, and a clear indication of good faith on her part. Last but not least, it wasn't that long ago when Ji-hoon was looking at her in that pained I-still-have-feelings-for-her manner - at least until his mum's liver pushed all that out of his mind.

That said, I love all the interactions between Ji-hoon and Hye-soo. I only saw episode 4 just now, and for some reason I was just endlessly amused by that scene where he set his curtain on fire and just stood there like a lemon when Hye-soo dashed over to put it out. Or the scene where he was sitting on Eun-sung's bike and actually rang the bell to emphasise his point.

I love, love, love this drama! I would be the first to join the chorus in awe of DoTS and how awesome it is, but strangely it is this couple Hye soo and Ji Hoon, that totally grab my heart strings. Maybe it's because Ji Hoon plays his role with such a gruff vulnerability that I find myself constantly thinking about him and on pins and needles until the next episode.

I think Hye Soo strongly identifies with Mi ran because if she can just complete the surgery, she would have provided for her daughter, so even if she dies, she can leave her daughter with a relative (probably grandma) without any financial worries. Sort of like a bucket list, crossing off the t's and dotting the i's. If Miran does not get the surgery then Hye soo would feel obligated to return the deposit (even though Ji hoon has said she should keep it , if she isn't responsible for outing their contract) but she won't be able to leave her daughter provided for, or even pay for her medical treatment.

If Miran dies, then so does Hye soo, literally.

There's so much things I love in this ep
1) when they mirrored what Hye Soo and Eun Sang think about the husband, Eun Sang knew she supposedly sad but she can't lie that the non existences of her dad in her memory make her feel no less than sympathy,
2) When she asked her mom to marry Ji hoon because her mom said he is a good person,
3) Ji Hoon and Eun Sang conversation after he picked her up. Eun Sang realize that it's not just about she has a father but about her mom that need a companion, she didn't live this life alone and it's worth to have someone, and love changes

and many more
