Girl Who Sees Smells team heads to SBS weekends with new idol drama

The PD-writer team behind the supernatural cop-thriller-romance Girl Who Sees Smells is back with a new series, this time a showbiz drama about idols. The show formerly known as Dance With You has a new title and a timeslot on SBS — it’s now called Beauty and the Beast (though half the press releases are also calling it Beast’s Beauty, which I hope is a typo gone rogue) and it’s been slated to follow Mrs. Cop 2 on weekends this spring.

The new series comes from writer Lee Hee-myung of Girl Who Sees Smells, Yawang, Rooftop Prince, and Bad Family, among others. She’s re-teaming with Smells PD Baek Soo-chan (also of Pumpkin Flower Soon-jung, Dream, Tazza), and all that’s in the description for the drama is that it’s about idols and producers. That’s not really a lot to go on, and given that the new Ji Sung drama Entertainer is pretty much that same drama on the same network, I hope there’s going to be a spin on the concept.

I’m sure there will be, and that the two dramas will set themselves apart once we actually get to the meat of the story. Maybe this one will focus on the idols more than the producers, or maybe there will be a boy who smells music, who knows.

It’s interesting that SBS and MBC are programming shorter miniseries on the weekends now, in slots that were mostly occupied by 50-episode family shows and the occasional 20-episode special engagement. I’m curious to see if it’ll stick as a trend, and if it’ll mean more dramas throughout the year overall.

Beauty and the Beast will follow Mrs. Cop 2 on Saturdays and Sundays starting in May.

Wow..so many news this morning!
I'm sorry..but I have to ask this off topic question...Am I the only one who got these ads on this site? Like mortgage, fat trim supplement, insurance quotes, etc.. all in a row before 'leave a reply' window.

The most annoying one is the video one and the one that pops out on the side. I almost want to block them. On the PC, I don't mind so much because I can go past them quickly. But on mobile, it can be rather annoying.

I don't black ads on sites like these because I want to support them by giving them ad revenue. But I got so annoyed with how invasive the ads got on this site I sadly turned my ad blocker on for Dramabeans.

I wonder if DB can have one of those pay-to-remove-ads thing option for some. :(

I also don't want to block ads but sometimes they freeze my old laptop.

Hahaha that's so true. A drama about fan culture. It always baffles me how these fans know so much about where celebs are etc.

It baffles me that dramaland has not done one about fan culture since Reply '97(kinda?). Did they think that the hype was all about *the hunt that shall not be named*?

So many upcoming showbiz dramas this year. Kdrama always knows how to beat something to death.

Well I liked Girl Who Sees Smells at the start because of how funny it was. Which btw, I wish everyone could be like Yoochun and not care about looking silly.

Anyways, another idol drama? At least it won't be taking up a weekday slot.

Are we seeing a resurgence in idol/showbiz shows this year? And even last year with The Producers.

GWSS had some glaring flaws but both leads were hilarious, it made me happy every time I watched it.

Both Yawang and Girl Who Smells were manhwas but Yawang was a less than faithful adaptation... so maybe an original work from him would be best? BTW, Lee Hee Myung is a man and not a woman.

I liked Sensory more than it deserved to be liked. I did some judicious fast forwarding but found the leads to be sweeties. I did; however, swear off serial killers in rom/coms after that. Keep them in Signal but not MLFAS and SC.

So I'm guessing that most of the Late Spring/Summer dramas are all gonna be idol related this year? Okay.

At least in GWSS no love triangle & piano involved. Lol :D

I think if you want to watch a drama solely for fun, this could be a good choice for you. The chemistry between the leads are great. I never liked Shin Se Kyung in anything but she did a good job in comedic role. But if you care a lot about plots, I cannot guarantee that you will satisfy on this.

Nam Goong Min is a plus point. He is a yummy viilain. ;D

"No love triangle and piano involved" hahahahahahaha this just cracked me up! Guess I am not the only one still sulking about cheese. CiTT gave me a trauma for the lifetime. But somehow it also became my guilty pleasure!

Well with Smells, you kinda expect it to be average. At most, you'll get bored or maybe you'll roll your eyes a few times. CITT was disappointing because it should've been good, but then it took a sharp right turn and plummeted off a cliff.

That said, I ended up dropping Smells too because I can't deal with stupid cop plot lines. But if you can ignore all that, it was really hilarious. And if you like Yoochun, even better. It's a drama for a lazy day.
