Drama viewership ratings for the week of Mar. 7-13, 2016

A couple of shows ended this week, some on high points, others on low points. Likewise, we added a new player to the game this week with Pied Piper, which replaced the slot previously taken by Cheese in the Trap on tvN. And overall, I’d say it had a pretty decent start, so it remains to be seen whether audiences will agree enough to keep tuning in next week.

Over on cable, Madam Antoine ended with 0.503%, which sounds pretty bad, but was actually pretty consistent with the numbers the show’s been pulling thus far. It was only able to break the 1% mark for two episodes, but otherwise, seems to have pretty much flown under the radar.

On the other end of the cable spectrum, Signal ended its critically acclaimed run with a series high of 12.544%, and as always, it was well deserved. When is this entire team coming back to create more drama gold? We’ll all be waiting.

As far as broadcast shows go, the fact that Descended From the Sun looks poised to break the 30% mark soon is frankly insane. (In an interesting way!) To put their gobsmacking numbers in perspective, it’s doing better than any of the weekend shows right now—which normally have higher ratings to begin with—and shows no signs of stopping. It’s the highest earning drama on television right now, period. Something tells me writer Kim Eun-sook is going to be getting work for a long, long time.

I've been searching for the video of Pied Piper with eng sub, but i can't find it anywhere, (even in the illegal web)

I am really curious about the story, :'(
I wish i could understand hangul,..
Hope Dramabeans will recap it asap.

That's because illegal sites actually steal the subs from legitimate sites like DF and Viki. So if neither are subbing Pied Piper, it will be very difficult to find it anywhere.

Surprisingly I really liked Marriage Contract, watched the two episodes back to back. I can see where the stories going but looks like it'll be a fun ride. Obviously I have my reservations about UEE since she's also a single mum in the drama, but after the first two eps, I'm going to continue watching this.

Haha me too. The story is cliche.

But because I started watching this with zero expectation, so I found myself enjoying it more. Uee can be good depending on the role she is given.

I usually shy away from melodramas. I started watching the first episode just because I'm a LSJ fan but now I can hardly wait to see the 5th episode. This is really a surprisingly good drama that just makes me cry every episode.

The conflict in Marriage Contract is just a mess, and almost every thing is too cliche. However, there's something more interesting behind the character's backstory. And the kid is too adorable. I'm watching the drama only to see her pushing away the chaebol-annoying-ahjussi lol.

Just like Park Shin-hye redeems her terrible Cha Eun-sang with adorable Choi Inha, Kim Eunsook writer-nim also redeems her awful Heirs with amazing Descendant of the Sun.

Thanks DotS team for not wasting Song Joong-ki. I can't help but swoon everytime he's on screen -_-

KSH, LJS, SJK ... with just the look of their eyes we know that their girl would be the luckiest, the most loved girl in the world. Heol~

Btw, Signal writer never disappoint me since Ghost era (my first non-romance kdrama).

That's KES for you. I watched Secret Garden pretty early on when I started watching kdramas. At that time, I was fascinated enough to make it through the worst shows. I didn't mind the story so much or the characters, because the whole concept of kdrama was just so new to me, but remember I distinctly thinking "What these people saying just makes no sense at all." Like, it was bullshitting (the way you do in essays at uni, hoping your professor won't notice and will give you a good mark because you used lots of fancy words) on screen.

No other show from those early days, no matter how terribly written, stood out to me in that way.

P.S. Not all girls like this shit. :-D

Yes, Ric could've framed it differently, but it's quite alright for him to voice his opinion.

I would say his observation isn't far from the truth: that KES dramas gear towards a female audience for their larger than life romantic love concepts. I can't imagine a lot of guys liking her dramas. I'm a girl and my skin crawls at every line and "intense" stare, no matter how realistic/unrealistic it is.

If I'm wrong, may the most ardent male fan of KES dramas speak up!

0

Lol, funny, I know some korean guys (professionals at that) who are watching this because they think Song Joong Ki is cool.

0

True, I can see some guys watching it b/c of that, but I'm talking about the ratio of women to men.

0

I think he should have the right to voice both his opinions and his personality.

There was no personal attack. 'Us girls' need to learn not to have such thin skin.

0

@ Gidget

Oh, another one to add to the ever growing collection of seemingly innocuous, but deeply sexist retorts used to diminish women who are justifiably offended by some things (along the lines of "You're being too sensitive", "Are you on your period/Are you PMSing", "It's just a joke!" etc. etc.)

Learning not to have such "thin skin" would still not prevent me from seeing Ric's comment for what it is: a starightforward sexist remark. Because of course all girls like romance...???? And men are too tough for this sh**t????

That's some A+++ logic right there.

Let's not start on the contempt for traditionally female media/themes/spaces deeply ingrained in most of contemporary cultures. Of course romance is "girly s**t", because generations of male scholars and cultural gatekeepers made sure it was seen as such (Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters are truly rare exceptions who nevertheless only gained deserved praise years after their deaths).

So no, I'm not going to grow a thick skin and allow the sexist bulls**t to flourish.

It's a matter of preference. I met my husband in my late 30's and that's pretty much how we talked, not overtly cheesy but definitely guarded but we learned how to establish boundaries and expectations early on the relationship. We didn't hold in our feelings , so we avoided a lot of arguments. We didn't change for the sake of the other because we held on to our individuality and there was a lot of respect there. 20 years later, still going on strong. So, some people talk like that in real life. Peace!

What's up with some of these dramabeans users acting all high and mighty and looking down on DOTS viewers, i can understand legitimate criticisms on the plot, story, acting etc, but all the comments i see are oh DOTS is popular because of the pretty leads only, i'm like so if that's the case why did Jo In Sung and SHK's 'That Winter Drama' didn't blow up like DOTS? they were pretty leads too, why did SJK's drama 'Innocent Man' didn't cross 20% in ratings?, they were pretty leads too, why was Heirs struggling competing with Ji Sung's drama?, if being pretty was enough to guarantee blockbuster ratings then every broadcast company would hire only pretty leads, it's not hard to believe that DOTS viewers are legitimately enjoying the story and dialogue between the leads, they are watching drama for what they are, if they want to watch realistic things they would watch a documentary, luckily korean viewers are not acting like the international ones, they are totally enjoying everything this drama has to offer, most korean viewers themselves thought this drama would not do well when the first teasers came out, they said things like SJK doesn't look like an army and stuff like that, so they didn't just blindly follow this drama because of the pretty, their views changed once they saw SJK in action, so what changed? according to the viewers his acting and his delivery of the lines changed everything, he made everything believable, he made cringey words totally romantic, not only that but most comments were mentioning that along with romance the lack of love triangle is also the main attractions of the drama, so yeah DOTS viewers are not watching just for the pretty, majority of them are totally enjoying the plot, acting and the romance.

I am amazed by all the people who seem to love both Signal and Descendants of the Sun.

I was going to watch Signal because of all the favourable comments I have read here – many commending the solid writing – but, in contrast, DoTs has terrible writing (unwatchably-terrible for me).

Or is this a case of "loving this for the story & good writing" versus "loving this for the fluff & pretty on the screen"???

But hey, I love Joong Ki and I still can't believe how handsome he looks in uniform, and I don't mind all the prettiness in the show as well.DoTs is like my guilty pleasure drama hahaha

But believe me, Signal is really good in a sophisticated way :)

i agree. love/loved signal, but DOTS is another story.

actually i'm really surprised it's getting so much praise and such high ratings... probably because i'm personally not enjoying it that much. the dialogue can be terribly cringey. i totally predicted the wine kiss. i was even thinking, "oh no, don't you go there!"

generally i think i'm just bored with the army/overseas stuff. the scenery is to die for, but i find the story itself pretty dull. song joong-ki is gorgeous though, and song hye-kyo shines brightest when playing spunky types. and there's no korean actress who can cry the way she does. she's always been an amazing crier—the female version of kim soo-hyun, park bo-gum...

but do watch signal! just try the first episode, which is pretty intense and action packed. it will suck you in.

DoTS may not have the strongest writing, but the writer knows what makes a drama addicting. Also, the cinematography of this drama is out of this world. Personally, I'm watching this drama not because of the writing but the beautiful directing (and SJK. *sigh) I cringed a lot but somehow the cringiness (is that even a word) that this drama elicits is very addicting. Maybe if the drama is not pre-produced or if the lead actors were different, I would drop this drama in a heartbeat.

I love SJK and SHK, and I love him since RM days. I love to see how fine man he grow up to. Also enjoy his deep voice so much. See, all physical attraction. He can act, in some other dramas/movies, so does SHK.
Just not in Dots. I have tried, man I tried so hard, to get on board with the hype. first eps. second, third, gah I am even still trying, though I abuse the Fast forward button mercilessly. I can't for the love of me, like it. I really have no idea what's going on on my screen. What are these pure pretty, beautiful faces on my screen, with gorgeous make up like they're ready to go shopping in Gangnam. But, they're not. They're supposed to be in conflict area, with unbearable heat.

I would love to look like that when I travel to Asia during summer time.
It. does. not. make. any. sense.

And don't talk to me about the story. I mean...what story? (side effect of abusing FF button).

While everyone on my tumblr and twitter circle talking about dots like it's coming straight out of most beautiful love story ever. I sat alone and just feeling meh. yeah. MEH>

That's exactly it. I like both Signal and DOTS, but for totally different reasons.

Signal is an intelligent, well-written, well-acted drama. It's an intellectual watch, one that makes me think and want to discuss particularly complex points with other people. With DOTS, I've experienced enough of KES's dramas to know not to expect the same, particularly not of the plot or script - I watch it for the actors and the aesthetics.

It's the same way that it's possible for someone to enjoy an Oscar-nominated movie but then also enjoy going to the movies with friends on the weekend to watch a Marvel blockbuster. Different media fulfill different needs.

I agree. When we are totally aware of the genre of a TV show or a film we're watching, we can enjoy pretty much everything. I can't expect a Marvel blockbuster to give us the best performances ever but I know why Spotlight and The Revenant won at the Oscars.

Whoever applies the same rules to different kinds of productions, they miss the whole sense of entertainment.
Just my two cents.

I had to laugh at the comment. I love Signal for the story, the pacing, the acting. Though I've been raving about it from the beginning, it actually isn't perfect but it is definitely a step above most Korean dramas.

DOTS is a popcorn romance drama. The main drama viewers both internationally and in Korea are women. Heck the two guys who started Dramafever have said as much...young female viewers are their bread and butter (so why they lost out on the license for DOTS I'll never know). So, yes, there is the fluff and pretty aspect to DOTS popularity, but I still am just sitting back and enjoying the drama even though I am no longer in the "young" category anymore ;)

I juat remembered. I watch 2 final episodes of Signal then 2 newest episodes of DoTS. The difference in music department is jarring. Somehow the instrumental in Signal just fits the scenes. It doesn't do it excessively. Meanwhile, bgm in DoTS makes it more cringe-worthy than it already is. So if only they just toned down a bit, it would've been okay.

Haha! My current faves right now are Signal, DotS and SFD and though all three are different, I like them because in one way or another, they keep me entertained and engaged. I don't need all my dramas to be too intense or too fluffy. So I'm happy with the variation.

Signal is a masterpiece overall, everything is on point. While DotS, which ca be a bit cringey sometimes, sucks me in for the awesome cinematography, the pretty (yes, I can be shallow too) and in some way, I like that the story is different given this writer's history (didn't like A Gentleman's Dignity and didn't even touch Heirs). The lead characters talk to each other about their attraction and their concerns regarding it. And there are no unnecessary love triangles. I also like how the show highlights the characters' chosen professions and how they excel and take pride in it. As a doctor myself, I can somehow relate to the scenarios shown thus far - favoritism/nepotism in the hospital, coming to terms with failed management etc. So I am still very much excited to see what's to come.

I mean flaws aside, I havent liked a drama by Kim Eun Sook since City Hall. which i still cant believe she wrote cuz its actually you know GOOD. its a much smaller scale story so its less cringey than DOTS can be. but I'm having fun with dots, so far no filler scenes or drag or boring love triangles. CH had no love triangles either thankfully, very witty dialogue, and Kim Sun Ah and Cha Seung Won! and a p awesome heroine tbh. well I'm not sold on secondary couple in DOTS. I dont dislike them either. whereas secondary couple in CH was just...awful. for offensive reasons rather than merely being boring. but i wont go into it unless asked. (and also spoilers)

My fave Kim Eun Sook dramas are actually City Hall and Secret Garden. I think Secret Garden is somehow special to me as it was one of the first kdramas I've ever watched but the latter half was a bit frustrating lol. And as I got exposed to more dramas, I realized that there were way better shows and so Secret Garden slowly went down my top 10 list haha.

In line with this topic (as I see alot are talking about it today), really, it all boils down to preference. Different shows hit us in different ways. A drama may have a great story and everything, like Misaeng, but might just be too intense for others. Or a story might be light enough for someone who just needs an escape, to distract oneself. The reason I check DB is to see the consensus of the people, try out the dramas which seem interesting and let go when I feel like it's not doing anything for me. Life is too short to suffer through bad bad dramas so hope we can all enjoy the dramas that move us :)

That's not all it seems like to me. If you read the comments on the recaps, there's much analysis on the characters and their interactions. Although many aren't sold on the plot, including myself, how charming Song Joong-ki and Jin Goo are isn't the sole thing viewers are focused on.

Required fields are marked *

I asked the same question when I read comments at OT and Dots recap.

I love Signal but I cannot watch Dots.

With Dots, I had my reservations but when you see the ratings and raves, you question if you are missing something or just need to reach a certain point to get hooked. So I tried but it didn't happen. The characters and story make no sense to me. I found that I could even skip the subtitles because I couldn't be bothered with the dialogues. All I did was stare at SJK and SHK's beautiful faces. With the Ost coming on so frequently, it's like watching a music video. After the cliffhanger and earthquake last week, I think I gave up.

For me, it's 'story>acting>pretty' Ideally, I want them all. I do enjoy looking at pretty but I can never watch a drama just for it. What's even worse is that the story and writing focus so much on this aspect. Example a scene is specifically written "Here comes Song Joong Ki looking handsome, sexy and cool walking past SHK" Cue fangirl screams. I can take maybe one such scene every few episodes but not several in one.

acting>pretty’

Same for me. I mean, it's not that I need something that is plot-driven – on the contrary, slice of life is my favourite genre and that's certainly NOT story-driven – but I just need something well written. In any genre, because, yes, good writing exists in all genres.

I don't feel like I'm missing out here, I know I'd get frustrated if I tried watching, frustrated to a degree that's just not good for me, LOL. And the pretty not the screen doesn't distract me from that.

This is all very funny. Comparing Signal and DotS.
Both are completely different genres. How do you compare a romance to a mystery and figure out which is better. DotS is a love story first, a war series next. All the typical Kdrama hurdles of opposing parents, class difference are simply replaced by natural disasters, war, mercenaries etc. Why are folks expecting Saving Private Ryan stuff. Is it that war is an inappropriate backdrop for a romance drama? Or are you expecting Casablanca?

But some dramas have their own upsides and downsides. and DotS's downside is the writing....and the overly repeated OST. That aspect somehow turn people off.

You'd be surprised how many ppl are in the same boat. After watching dramas for so long, you just expect a certain caliber. If this was 15 years ago, or even 10 years ago, I may be able to gloss over meaningless dialogues and story plots a bit more.

But now, if you want me to shut my brain off for 16 hrs - that's not going to happen. Sure, for a movie or a short comedy stint, that's fine. But now, my time is money, it's valuable. I can't waste my precious time on unsubstantial fluff no matter how much I like the actors. Life is more than just beautiful ppl on your TV/computer screen. Lols, I've got things to do and learn.

Yes, I was like the other commenter, seeing all the hype and all my tumblr feeds full with all the pretties of dots I keep waiting, and waiting, maybe I have missed something and keep watching, but nothing. Nothing happened. I feel quite upset knowing my fine boy Joong Ki can actually act and he plays in this? Well if it's for the rating and the rave, congratulations! But, really disappointing from story point of view T_T

having thriller on one hand and romcom on the other hand - balanced kdrama life. wkwkwk

or else, I think I just love any genre as long as the acting and/or the story is watchable.

DOTS is what I call popcorn tv. its just alot of fun with the pretty locales, p decent fight choreo and very swoony romantic moments. (and ofc all the gorgeous people of both genders!)
it's not gripping prestige drama no.
Signal and DOTS are like two completely different genres. Signal is rly intense and dark. and i can only watch it when im in the mood for that kind of thing in general. but yeah if u want an intense well written nail biting thriller (which explores some serious subject matter) then yeah Signal. tbh i think they balance out each other well. Like watching a horror movie and then switching to a fluffy rom com afterwards. u know?

SIGNAL is one of the best written korean drama I can't wait for season 2 the ending until now still make me think what's gonna happen next... SIGNAL is one show that I can really recommend to everyone... As for DOTS it's become the overrated drama again like The heirs which is for me is not good enough i slept most of the time watching the drama. Maybe DOTS is not my kind of drama i like Song Joongki I even went to his fanmeet but the drama is not really making me anticipate it every week like what SIGNAL did to me and to my husband hahahha... My husband love it very much...

I thought I was the only one who couldn't enjoy DoTS. I like first episode, but later on I don't know how KMY is always (and what I mean by always is ALWAYS) gravitated towards YSJ. I mean, where is our badass Mo Yeon? Then I remember the writer is Kim Eun Sook. So now I just watch for the sake of Jin Goo (yes, not even SJK. The English conversation is reaalllly making me cringe)

I can't seem to get emotionally invested in any of Kim Eun-sook's dramas.

I only made it to episode 8 of Secret Garden and episode 8 of Heirs. Tried Descendants of the Sun because of Song Joong Ki, but still not into it.

I feel like I'm really missing out on something because all 3 of these shows have been so popular. Is it mainly the eye candy? I don't understand the popularity with her shows.

try city hall seeing that no one mentions it i guess it is not well known, but its my all time favourite drama by the same writer and the female character is the spunkiest of them all. It is a little serious (about politics ) may be that's why it lacks hype among audiences. On the contrary is is actually quiet funny.

Required fields are marked *

They're the kind of shows I can only watch once, and be done with it. No lingering feelings. Just soak up the entertainment and enjoy the feels in the moment.

I can switch off when watching DotS (Secret Garden was the same), and enjoy what's on screen for that one hour, then detach myself. I believe that is the same for entertainment in general - hence the popularity.

It's a no brainer really; it's a show which appeals to the masses. And every country has em'.

I don't know how Kim Eun Sook does it tbh. She deserves a lot of credit for her ability to create waves in drama culture, whether or not her stories are good.

And I also think viewers don't just fall for a popular face or a star writer anymore. A good example is Hyde, Jekyll, Me. Writing and story does matter, and DotS is definitely not subpar. There are a lot of good aspects to it. It just seems to not suit a lot of people.

Like someone said above, DOTS is popcorn romance drama. I believe all of works from the same writer are popcorn romance drama.

Not saying it is bad, but it might no suits with everyone's taste. ;)

I found DOTS watchable, but not kinda my fav show. But still following it because it has lots of eye candies. Once it finished, I will forget about it. Same with Heirs and Secret Garden. ;)

Ajussi, plzzz dont dissappoint at the end, as it is the trend now in dramaland.

Chemistry are great between the casts, not only between Oh Yen Seo & Rain. Even Oh Yen Seo & Honey Lee do have a great chemistry. ;)

This is one of those dramas that you will enjoy because of characters, not the plotlines.

Agreed on enjoying the characters rather than plot for Come Back Ahjussi! Their purpose of coming back seems to be getting more complicated and I honestly can't keep track of the story for the life of me, however I found myself cracking up a lot especially with Rain and OSY scenes. Even evil baddie CWH cracks me up too. I'm 2 episodes behind on DoTS which I'm liking as well but obviously not as much as Ahjussi. Don't know where the story will take us, but I'm on board with the crazy story so far!

Yes, I think the plot on CBA is pretty weak. I can see why the live viewers would greatly prefer DOTS to watch first. Since we're viewing them both on the web to me it's no big deal since I'll watch them both. But if I had to pick just one it would be DOTS since I think overall it's a much higher quality show. Fortunately, I don't have to pick. ;)

I am thinking will it cross 40%?

The latest weekday drama to cross was Moon Embracing the Sun in 2012 which had 47%. Getting high ratings just seems so difficult nowadays, probably because people have other sources of entertainment.

I just wish more drama crossed 30-40%

Required fields are marked *

The rating that counts is AGB Nationwide therefore Moon/Sun's highest rating would be 42.2% and not 47%. You are looking at TNmS Seoul only.
AGB Nationwide covers more households than TNmS.

30%+ is possible for DotS but I doubt it'll reach the national drama status although it would be great because there hasn't been a week day national drama since 2012.

Really crossing my fingers for Kim Eun-sook's next project for tvN to be more creatively written, fluffy romance is good...but something is missing. I bet the cable network would be thrilled to have her, so they better give her all the support to pull off a solid drama in line of their most shows.

Expectations on tvn is really high.... they have set a high bar for show with tight plot with proper pacing... I don't think this writer excels in this area.. so I'm not comfortable with this combo unless the writer has split personality and writes exactly opposite of her current writing style (eye candy and cheesy dialogs)

If people only see the eye-candy as the only upside, they won't write other things like what the 'true-fan' will.

The above commentators had high expectation and DotS just doesn't simply meet it.

I admit there are good things about the drama, but there are things that can't be overlooked that easily.

Agreed. Sometimes, I think it's just fashionable on Dramabeans to pick on KES dramas. This one isn't doing badly at all. There are more crappy and crappily made dramas that got praised on DB imo, or didn't recieve this amount of criticism. Crictism is good. Incessant complaints about it is not.

I'm really pleased to see Signal cracked 12% at the end. I would love to see another season at this quality level -- IF and only if they can keep the story at this level.

I'm really a bit amazed DOTS hit 28%. I thought it would crack 25 again this week but I didn't think the 30% mark would be so close.

With these two pre-filmed dramas, I would love to read some quotes from the actors in them and how they feel about the material they worked on so far in advance hitting the ball out of the park.
