Descended From the Sun: Episode 4
by LollyPip
The aftermath of conflict can be as dangerous as the conflict itself, as Shi-jin knows and Mo-yeon is about to discover. As a doctor she’s used to making decisions based on one thing only — saving her patient’s life — but out here in a war zone those decisions can affect people in unexpected, and often unwanted, ways. Mo-yeon can’t just think of her own wishes anymore, and that’s going to be a painful lesson for her to learn.
EPISODE 4 RECAP
With the Abu Dhabi prince dying on the table, Mo-yeon swearing she can save him, and the prince’s people and Shi-jin’s commanding officer, ordering him to stand down, Shi-jin has to make a fast decision. Unwilling to let the man die and Mo-yeon take the blame, he confirms that she can save him, and pulls his gun.
Every weapon in the room comes out, and the President’s man tells Mo-yeon one more time to get her hands off him. At the same time, Shi-jin tells his men that the safety of the doctors and their patient are their top priority. The men form a line in front of the medical team, and Shi-jin gives them permission to fire if necessary.
The President’s man says to Shi-jin carefully that he’d better know what he’s doing. With a gun inches from his face, Shi-jin returns that he’ll protect what he needs to protect. The medical team start to wheel the patient to the operating room, with Shi-jin and his men shifting their line as they go. It’s a tense moment, but Shi-jin turns to watch Mo-yeon just as she steps out of sight.
The word goes out to Lieutenant General Yoon, Mo-yeon’s boss, Director Han, and their respective teams, and everyone is of differing opinions on whether Mo-yeon is doing the right thing. If she saves the patient she’ll be a hero — but if he dies, it could mean war.
Mo-yeon prepares to begin surgery, while Shi-jin and his men maintain tense aim at the President’s men. They can all hear their commander Lieutenant Kwak yelling at them through their coms, but not one of them moves a muscle to answer.
To make things even worse, Special Forces teams descend on the base prepared for combat. Lieutenant Kwak growls to anyone who can hear to order Shi-jin to stop the operation or he’ll shoot them all personally, but still, nobody moves.
Mo-yeon notices a previous surgery scar on the patient’s abdomen that wasn’t noted on his chart, which just makes this surgery even more dangerous. But Mo-yeon declares that as doctors they must do what they can to save their patient, and makes the first cut.
The doctors are forced to make decisions based on what evidence they find inside the patient, and things are complicated by the amount of surgical scar tissue in the patient’s abdomen. His blood pressure drops and Sang-hyun suggests they just stop the bleeding and close him up, but Mo-yeon isn’t interested in taking the easy route.
They stop the bleeding just as the President’s doctor arrives, and he declares the surgery a success — once the President wakes up. He tells Mo-yeon that she still has cause to worry, but she counters that if she’d focused on worrying instead of acting, they’d have a dead body on their hands right now.
She fiercely stands up to the angry doctor, though as soon as he leaves the room, she flops to the ground in exhaustion. Chi-hoon asks what will happen if the President dies, and Sang-hyun deadpans that they’ll have an aneurysm case report… and a slight change in world history.
Lieutenant General Yoon meets with the hospital bigwigs, where they discuss the results of the surgery. Even though the surgery went well, they need to prepare some sort of diplomatic statement, and the person in charge will be disciplined. That means Shi-jin, so Yoon is not happy about it, but he makes the call.
He’s connected directly to Dae-young, and orders him to detain Shi-jin to the barracks for insubordination. He softens enough to tell Dae-young that they did the right thing, but an order is an order. Shi-jin knows just from his men’s faces what’s happening — he hands over his gun, and Dae-young officially dismisses him from duty. Shi-jin even respectfully switches to English to tell the Arab leader that he’s not taking off, he’s been… summoned.
Chi-hoon and the nurses sit to eat, and Min-ji worries that she counted the gauze wrong after surgery — they didn’t leave one inside the patient, did they? The older nurse, Ja-ae, picks up on her panic and starts to worry, too.
Shi-jin is detained in a storage room, which is where Lieutenant Kwak comes for him. Shi-jin apologizes for his insubordination, but Kwak is too furious to accept, especially to see such a promising soldier ruin his career. Shi-jin finally meets Kwak’s eyes at that, and tells him that he has no regrets, and will take full responsibility.
Mo-yeon wants to talk to Shi-jin, but first Lieutenant Kwak demands to speak to her. He sneers at her confidence when she tells him that she made sound medical decisions, unimpressed with her fame. He tells her that she just single-handedly ruined Shi-jin’s career — even if things go well, he’ll never be promoted again, and if the President dies, he’ll rot in prison. He does ask her to make sure the patient wakes, since the least they can do now is save their own careers.
Dae-young assumes his transfer is delayed, since he’s now the officer in charge of the unit, but Lieutenant Kwak disabuses him of that notion and orders him to proceed as planned. He adds that, if anyone in Korea asks, Shi-jin offered to take full responsibility.
Dae-young tells Shi-jin that he’s leaving, but Shi-jin declines to hear his report since he’s no longer in charge. Dae-young says, with respect written all over his face, that every decision Shi-jin made today was right and justified, and honorable.
Dae-young lets Mo-yeon know that she has ten minutes to see Shi-jin, and she stands outside the door to speak with him. She apologizes, though he says it’s not necessary, and tells Shi-jin that the patient is still sleeping. Ha, he jokes that she has too many men to worry about — she should stop flirting and just worry about him.
His bravado only makes Mo-yeon well up with tears, and he continues that he realized that she was right before, that she looks sexy in the operating room. Mo-yeon asks why he backed her up like that, and he reminds her of his rule that the elderly, children, and beautiful women must be protected. Today he protected an old man, and a beauty.
He tells Mo-yeon that she was brave, and that starts her crying in earnest. She asks if he needs anything, and he jokes again that he’d like some explosives. He was fine, but now he really wants to break out because of her.
Before she leaves, Mo-yeon passes a mosquito coil to Shi-jin through the vent, saying that he might need it. He thanks her, and doesn’t mention that he’s in a supply room with hundreds of them. Aww, that’s terribly sweet.
The President begins to wake, and practically the entire camp slumps in relief. His own doctor takes control and he’s airlifted out, and the leader of the men nods thanks to Mo-yeon as the helicopter takes off.
Staff Sergeant Choi, who was left in charge, calls Dae-young in Korea to update him. Sweet Ki-bum cries into the phone at Dae-young for leaving him without saying goodbye, and Dae-young tells him that he left a dictionary to help him study for his GED.
Dae-young runs into Myung-joo unexpectedly on the tarmac, and his face goes intensely blank like it does wherever she’s concerned. She asks if he’s running away again, and when he starts his formal report, she slaps his face, hard. He looks at her for just a moment, then carefully trains his eyes past her again and finishes.
With a shaking voice, Myung-joo tells him to say it’s a tactical retreat, or to tell her to wait, or that he’ll do whatever he can to come back. She punctuates her words with thumps to his chest that don’t even faze him, and he simply tells her to watch out for the bugs.
She grabs his wrist when he starts to walk past her, and instead of shaking her off, he uses the leverage to pull her in for a one-armed hug. Myung-joo shakily asks what this means, and Dae-young simply says to take care of herself. He salutes and walks away, while she yells after him, “Why hug me? Why touch me? Take ownership of your actions!”
She keeps yelling as he goes, that he said seeing her makes him sad and he’s so nice to other women, so “why not to me?” Oof, everything about this scene just kills me.
We flash back to the wedding they crashed together, when Myung-joo had asked Dae-young how much he loved this woman… you know, just so she knows exactly how much revenge will be needed. He said that he once promised to make her happy, and Myung-joo pointed out that no bride would be happy to have her wedding ruined.
He’d said that you can’t be happy when you have regrets, and Myung-joo figured out that this wasn’t revenge, it’s to give her comfort.
The bride had been pretty well horrified to see him, scared he might talk to her groom, and Myung-joo had waltzed in to link arms with Dae-young and introduce herself as his girlfriend. Dae-young had held Myung-joo’s hand and told the bride that he wouldn’t miss her, so she can go live a happy life.
Over drinks later, Myung-joo made sure to remind Dae-young of his promise to pretend to be her girlfriend in front of Shi-jin. At a later date, she’d been less composed as she complained about a rumor going around that they’re sleeping together. HAHA, caught in her own trap. Myung-joo had asked if Dae-young thought this was funny, and he’d cracked a tiny smile: “It’s not boring.” Oh, I adore him.
Another time skip and more drinks, and Myung-joo is still upset. Dae-young explains that for men, “dating” means sleeping together — it’s not a slight to her honor, it’s just how men think. He’d accidentally slipped and mentioned sex, and Myung-joo crows that he’s the same as all men, one-track mind. Then she makes the same slip, HA.
Another evening, and Dae-young tells her there’s one way to make the rumors stop — turn them into fact. Oh really now? That had earned him a well-deserved beating.
Back in the present, Lieutenant General Yoon is informed of Myung-joo’s arrival in Uruk, as well as Dae-young’s departure. He takes a call from the Blue House with a special request from the Arab League, to make it as if the incident never happened. As for Shi-jin, whether he’s punished or commended is left up to Yoon. He orders Shi-jin released, but that his disciplinary hearing is to proceed as planned.
Shi-jin gives the stink-eye to table hilariously covered in tofu dishes… looks like Chef Ki-bum got a little excited that his Captain was being released, hee. And I love that Shi-jin’s men know him well enough to offer him candy to temper his, well… temper. He thanks them all for their work during the emergency alert, and promises to treat them to barbeque later to make up for all this tofu.
Mo-yeon comes running but stops short at the sight of the entire platoon staring at her, and offers to come back later. Shi-jin wants to talk now and leads her out, but they both grow adorably shy once alone. He breaks the ice with a joke that she really is a real doctor, but Mo-yeon is here to thank him for trusting her.
She admits that she was scared, but Shi-jin says that he’s used to those sorts of situations. He has something else to say, and apologizes for saying that some doctors are only fit for broadcasting.
Mo-yeon allows that he wasn’t wrong, but he gives credit where it’s due — not many doctors would perform life-saving surgery with a gun pointed at them. She asks if they really would have shot her, and Shi-jin’s serious expression is all the answer she needs.
A voice calls out, and they see the men that led the Arabs that night, summoning them to a car. He takes them to meet President Mubarat, who seems to be well on the mend. He thanks them sincerely, and Mo-yeon warns him to avoid stress due to his heart condition. Shi-jin comments that war is easy and peace is difficult, and the President jokes that doctors always nag, and he prefers soldiers.
He gives them a gift — his business card, which they’re told can save them in any situation in which there are Arabs present. Mo-yeon asks for another one, since there are two of them, which makes the President belly-laugh at her cheek. It gets her the second card, though.
Shi-jin takes one card, and immediately cashes it in for the use of the President’s car for the day. He just grins as Mo-yeon whines about the waste of a good get-out-of-jail-free card. He says that they have two hours, and he wants to use it to go on a date. (Mo Yeon: I didn’t say I’d go on a date with you! Shi-jin: I didn’t ask.)
Over drinks, Shi-jin asks Mo-yeon why she became a doctor, but he doesn’t buy her easy answer. She admits that doctors are paid well, saying he can call her materialistic if he wants. But Shi-jin just looks at her searchingly, then asks why she keeps pretending to be a bad person.
She just says that a lot happened after he left, and she’s changed a lot. She says that he doesn’t look any different, and he quips that she should have noticed how much more handsome he got. That makes her smile, and he adds that her smile got prettier, but he’s definitely not joking now. In fact, that was damn intense.
Shi-jin takes a call, and all Mo-yeon hears is that it’s something about the UN. He starts his familiar apology but Mo-yeon cuts him off, and she snaps that their dates always end the same. She asks if she’s not allowed where he’s going… but he says that she’s not prohibited, it’s just that taking her wouldn’t be to his advantage.
Mo-yeon asks why he’s always trying to gain the upper hand, and he’s honest when he says that his job naturally gives him the lower hand in this relationship. Mo-yeon asks, what if she still wants to go, and Shi-jin can’t refuse her.
It’s a funeral for a fellow soldier, and we see a flashback in which Shi-jin is serving with soldiers of several nationalities. He poses for a photo with a friend, and oh no, that’s the same man who was leading the gun smugglers. He’s there at the funeral, but watching from a distance, and leaves before anyone sees him.
Shi-jin and Mo-yeon return the car, and she asks about the deceased man. He’s vague, just saying that he died trying to maintain peace, and it seems to be the first time that Mo-yeon realizes that Shi-jin could also die. He doesn’t want to discuss it, and just says that this is why he’s got the lower hand.
Mo-yeon is surprised to hear that Shi-jin is at his disciplinary hearing the next morning, and it’s clear that his men blame her for getting their captain in trouble.
Shi-jin isn’t disciplined for the incident with the Arab President, but the committee needs to punish him for something, so they decide that his discipline will be for not following regularions in regards to the bomb disposal. He’s given a three-month reduction in pay, and he’s also no longer eligible for promotion.
He’s so distracted as he leaves the meeting that Myung-joo manages to trip him. She teases that she’ll get her star before he does, based on the things that she’s been hearing, and he jokes back that she must already know that Dae-young was transferred, since she’s not looking for him.
Shi-jin grows alarmed when he sees Mo-yeon burst into the committee meeting, and he finds her arguing that the incident was all her fault, and that he shouldn’t be punished. Lieutenant Kwak retorts that military laws are different, and Shi-jin yanks her out of there before she can say anything else.
He tells her that this is not because of her, that he wouldn’t make such a decision just because of a woman. He reminds her of the gunshot wound she asked about when they first met, and tells her that soldiers always live with a shroud on. When you die in a nameless land for the sake of your country, that place becomes your grave and your uniform becomes your shroud.
Soldiers are expected to carry this mindset whenever they wear their uniform, and to be honorable at all times. One of his superiors told Shi-jin that, and he got that gunshot wound in service of that superior. When he makes a decision, he takes into account his fellow soldiers and their honor.
But regardless, he still violated military law. The military will handle it internally, and she’s to stay out of it. With a steady voice, Mo-yeon apologizes that her concern got in his way. She drives away, leaving Shi-jin stricken, and only lets herself cry once she’s alone
Shi-jin talks to Dae-young for company as he walks back to camp, and gets his feelings all hurt when Dae-young says he deserves his discipline. He has to defend again that he didn’t make his decision because of a woman, he did it because his job is to protect people (Dae-yong: “Yes, and ‘people’ is pretty.” HA).
But Dae-young really called to ask if Shi-jin has seen Myung-joo, and Shi-jin gets some petty revenge by throwing his words back in his face, that he sure is going through a lot just for a woman. And then hangs up on him.
Shi-jin barely arrives back at camp before he runs into Mo-yeon in the kitchen, but he asks her to stay when she looks like she’s going to go right back out again. She can’t even make eye contact, and says he looked like he wanted to be alone, but he corrects her: “I want to be with you.”
He offers her some of the cooking wine he was about to dig into, and his bemused expression when she drinks straight from the bottle is adorable. She offers him a drink, but technically he’s not allowed — he was going to sneak some but got caught.
She asks how he got back and he lies that he ran, only to have her say that she saw him getting out of the car. He asks why she asked then, and she smiles, “I wanted to hear your joke.” Aww.
She compliments Shi-jin in his dress uniform, admitting that she knew what it was because girls always fantasize about men in uniforms. Shi-jin nods sagely — that’s why he became a soldier.
His expression goes soft, and he says wistfully that he wanted to go see a movie with her. He asks if she stayed and saw the movie the time he had to leave, and she says that she didn’t, but fibs that it was because she wanted to see it with someone.
She says that after that night, she kept seeing ads that it was the perfect date movie, and now it always makes her think of him. She misinterprets his intense stare as meaning that he wants some of the wine, holding out the bottle, and his voice goes all deep and growly as he says that he can find a way to taste it.
Then he swoops in for the kiss.
COMMENTS
I need a minute, give me a minute. I will be able to form cohesive thoughts again. Eventually. Okay, I got this.
While Descended From the Sun isn’t perfect by any means, in my opinion it’s a solid show with a lot to offer, in terms of wonderful characters and intricate, layered relationships. Something I haven’t mentioned yet, that really is one of my favorite things about this show, is the friendship between Shi-jin and Dae-young. I can’t even really call it a bromance because it feels like so much more than that — more like true brotherhood. It’s interesting, since Shi-jin has been Dae-young’s superior since they met, and yet the admiration and respect between the two men feels so mutual and equal. They don’t treat each other as anything but the closest of friends, and the most loyal of brothers. It honestly makes me scared (and gives me flashbacks) that one of them is going to be in some serious danger at one point… this is Dramaland after all.
Speaking of Dae-young, I think he’s an amazing character. He’s so hard to read and so careful about what he lets slip, so when he does reveal some information about himself, it feels like a huge burst of insight. Again, he reminds me of a certain Earnest Bot, who to this day is still one of my favorite drama characters ever. I can see Dae-young becoming the same type of man — deep, loyal, just plain good. I loved how we got to see that see his real purpose for going to his ex’s wedding wasn’t selfish at all, and in fact was probably very painful for him. He knew she still had feelings for him and wanted to keep his promise to make her happy, so the only way he could do that was to set her free for good. That tells me pretty much all I need to know about him as a man, and it’s nothing but positive.
Shi-jin is a much more layered character, and I really appreciate how he’s so honest and open. When he makes a mistake he owns it and apologizes, right away, without excuse or explanation. His dry, sarcastic sense of humor is fun, and he uses it well to diffuse tense situations, for the most part. It’s nice to see Mo-yeon starting to enjoy that facet of his personality. His silly side is cute but he does take it too far at times, and I like that he’s not too big to admit when he screws up. That honesty carries over to serious topics too, and he doesn’t hold back from speaking his mind and his feelings, which is great because we as an audience (and Mo-yeon as his love interest) never have to wonder what he’s thinking. And since she’s much more of a closed book, I think Shi-jin’s tendency to just say things right out will keep drawing her out of her shell.
And she needs it — I see Mo-yeon as the one who has the most to learn and the furthest to grow, regarding herself and life in general. She tends to tell herself lies to comfort herself (like that she became a doctor because of money), yet she’s so transparent to Shi-jin. She makes quick and often wrong decisions, and acts out without thinking. It’s gotten her in trouble at home, and it’s getting her in trouble now in the field. But I like that Shi-jin doesn’t tell her how to be, he just holds up a mirror so that she can see how her behavior affects others. It embarrasses her, and she puts a wall up to protect herself, but hopefully Shi-jin is just the man to help her break that wall down again.

Was anyone else finding the last scene so predictable you were saying the lines in your head before the scene even happened?
I still loved it of course. :P

Hi Sky! :-)
I actually did not find the last scene predictable. I did not know it was coming, and that we would have a kiss. I honestly didn't. I actually loved that SJ looked at MY, but it was a pensive look, like he was taking in the fact that she had just indirectly confessed to him, also letting him know that although 8 months had gone by, she still liked him, and she had still been thinking about him. His line was cheesy but I liked it, maybe because SJK was the one who delivered it, and maybe because honestly, I love YSJ so far, so his cheesy lines don't bother me. I feel that he means what he says, so why not say it?
But I also think that coming from SJ, that did not surprise me. Since the beginning of the drama, he has been looking at MY a lot, and he has often had that pensive look on his face. I am attributing those scenes to this drama being a melodrama (as one of its genres), and so the slow motions scene will be there, the pensive looks, etc... I also feel though that (from what I have seen), it seems to be YSJ's style as well. To (at times) let things sink in, before he reacts. I am often like that as well, I have to process things before I react (if I have the time to do so), so to me that makes sense.
I really loved this ep., and I loved that they took the time to explore the repercussions of YSJ's and MY's decision. I am still not getting MJ, and I am really hoping that she will not be made to be a one dimensional character, like the one in AGD who badly wanted to date her oppa. All that character did was cry in that drama. She was so irritating.

I actually don't know how I foresaw that. But I think it mainly has to do with the way that he was looking at her and when she said "do you want some" it sealed the deal. There was really only one way he could get that drink without tasting it directly, hehe.
Hmm..I don't know if SJ was processing it or if was simply just stunned and then a bit moved by it. I think maybe both. His gaze just has so much to explore. *sigh* We could probably write a page on his gaze alone. Although at times all I can see is Intensity, Intensity, it's so...intense.
I feel a little dumb- I hadn't realized the importance of her statement that the movie equaled him until I read you guys's comments. Was a bit confused why he was so put off by that. But knowing that it was a form of confession makes it clearer. Obviously he'd be affected.

Hi Sky, :-)
I realized he was going to kiss her when he said, "there are other ways/methods to taste it," because by then, it was obvious that he was going to kiss her. And as soon as he was done saying that, he started walking towards her. But before that, I was not thinking about having a kiss in this ep.
As I have said before, in rewatching epis. 1 and 2, and even 3, I have noticed that SJ gazes a lot at MY, and I find those gazes to be pensive. I know those gazes, I have seen them before. I personally feel that he likes looking at her, he enjoys it. And as he has said, he finds her very pretty (and attractive), and he lets her know that often (which I personally love).
That being said, I also feel that at times he might be trying to read her, trying to figure her out, and I am OK with that. I don't always see the intensity that some beanies have commented about. I know that he has at times gotten into her personal space (I have loved how he has done that so far, so flirtatious, and SJK makes it look sensual and well, flirtatious, but in a good/delicious way). He has also at times looked at her directly in the eyes (he also gets to her eye level quite a bit, which I also love, because it tells me that he is not trying to talk down to her [if he was standing straight, since he is taller than her], and I also like that about him.
I feel that he just has a way of looking at her, at times like he is taking in her beauty, and at times like he is taking a mental picture, for when he will not be seeing her. I think I just love the ways in which he looks at her. One of the things I love about him is when she does something he finds adorable, and he smiles about it, like when she was watching the CCTV videos in the security room, and rooting for SJ and DY. That was sooo adorable. SJK is just LOVE when he does that. I think I also like him a lot because I know enough about him (SJK), to know how nice of a person he is in real life. Very humble, not attention seeking, and hard working. He also comes from a wealthy family, but you couldn't tell by looking at him, and the way he behaves around others, and with them. He has no airs about him, which I simply love.
About your 2nd #, I actually agree with you: I do think that he was surprised about her confession, and I can see why. So far, he has been the forthcoming one, in words and in actions about how he feels about her. He has not tried to hide it. He often tells her that (he said in ep.4, when they were in the kitchen, "I want to be with you, I have said it many times." And the truth is, yes he has), and he had been pursuing her. He asked to meet her the very day she called (when he was working out), instead of setting a date for later. He went to pick her up 2 hrs early to the hospital (and was willing to wait for her), he took her on the boat ride, because she wanted to visit the area, and he took her on a date in this ep. So to me, his actions have matched his words, so...

@ Sky, Part 2:
In that sense, MY has always known where he stood (as far as she was concerned), whereas MY has not been as forthcoming (or as clear) with him. However when she made that statement, things became very clear: she (still) liked him, and she had been thinking about him. He was in!!!!! So I took that to mean that he didn't expect it, or maybe he didn't expect it at that time, I am not sure. I could see how he would be moved by it as well, because now she was matching him, in letting him know EXACTLY how she felt about him. Maybe he wanted to sit in that/with that new reveal for a mn or two, I know I would have. So yeah, he could have been stunned, AND moved by it.
I still feel that he was processing it, meaning that he was letting that sink in. ("Wait! Did she just told me that she ACTUALLY likes me? Yeah... I think that was what she meant. Oh!!!!!! She actually came out and said it huh, not directly, but that was what she meant. Hum...") And then he started to walk towards her. Can I write my fanfic now? :-)
About your last #, please don't feel dumb. That is why it helps to read the comments posted by others. One person cannot think of the many interpretations a scene can have. Even the recappers (who have watched many, many dramas, and who have thought about them, since they write about them) learn from our comments, and from our different perspectives. That statement she made was huge in my opinion, she was basically confessing that she liked him, a lot, and had, for a long time (at least 8 months). It moved things along for them (we got a kiss, didn't we? :-) ). And I have a feeling there might be a step back or two in the future, we'll see. And I don't think he was put off, I do think he was affected by it, as you said.

@ Affie,
Yeah tbh, I am not sure what to think of MJ so far. She seems feisty and fun in the flashbacks, however in the present, I feel that all I have seen of her is using her position and rank to order DY into doing what she wants him to do (which I find unprofessional). And then, I know she loves him (DY) and she misses him, hence the tears, and the crying.
I just don't trust how this writer creates her female characters, and as much as I really liked the Me Ah-ri (and Oppa) couple, MAR ended up irritating the heck out of me. I feel that that actress signed a contract to basically cry in that drama (AGD). It made it hard to root for her, because she was sooooo obsessed with her Oppa, and she was not trying to do anything with her life, which Oppa wanted her to do.
KJW can act, so I am hoping that she is given something to do, besides crying, yelling, and hitting DY's chest when she sees him.

YES. I think I've been saying this since I saw the episode yesterday, but the kiss was so predictable in the best way. I saw SJK's face right after SHK said that she thought about him whenever she thought about the movie and then I was like...... he's gonna do it he's gonna do it!!! Gah, this drama makes me feel so fluttery in these moments!

I totally saw it coming given Korea and their obsession over novel (mostly food sharing kisses from sweets in Iris to cotton candy in That Winter...).
What I didn't see coming was that hug from Daeyoung. Hands down my favourite scene from all 4 episodes. The small but rare moment when the stoic taciturn guy finally lets the girl know her love isn't unrequited. I have a bad feeling that he would totally end up like Jo Jong Suk's charrie in Kings 2 Hearts because let's face it, he is awfully like that charrie. Quiet, loyal, capable, actions-speak-louder guy, very charming without meaning to be and in a Romeo-Juliet relationship. He is totally up for dying while protecting Shi Jin or Moyeon (for his bro) or maybe even Myung Joo's dad. I really like and am super invested in Myung Joo and Daeyoung plotline.
The characters in the drama is great, so much complexities. I appreciate the real conflict that exists in this show here is not just a made-up one but a moral dilemma that is embedded deep in one's occupation. Even within that, there is the freedom of choice: choice that must be exercised with care. Moyeon is very individualistic because as a doctor, you call the shots on behalf of the patient only but Shi Jin, being in the army, have to make his decision on behalf of a group of people. Moyeon's decision affects the patient and at most, the family members but Shi Jin is making decisions on a whole different level that could involve an entire country and the butterfly effects. The stakes are very different; it is neither the same nor does one hold lesser weight than the other. It is, however, definitely, a conundrum for them because it is the conflict of their relationship. Totally looking forward to how this difference would play out in the future episodes.

N it's just ep. 4. KBS attempted something new llately with all the innuendos flying around in OMV and now this "kiss scene" in early eps. It's like they're trying to grown up or viewing adult content more and more.
Perhaps its because tvn? Since most of KBS crews also work there.

Thank you for the recap! Finally, we can talk more freely about ep.4. The beginning of this ep. was one of my favorite scenes in this ep. I wished that opening had lasted a little longer than the less than two mns we were given. I get that the Arab bodyguards were doing what they thought was right regarding their Prdt, and that YSJ and his men were doing what they thought was right regarding a sick man who needed an emergency surgery to survive. However, as shallow as GB said it might be in ep.3 recap, I loved this “you do what you have to do. I will protect what I have to protect,” line. I loved that YSJ meant not only MY (so that she could perform the surgery), but also the other doctors and the nurses who were with them, AND the Arab Prdt.
Some have talked about the slow motion scenes in this drama, and I feel that this being a melodrama, we will have slow motion scenes. How could we not? So to me, that slow motion scene, where the medical team moved the bed to the operation room, and a second later YSJ and his men moved along with them, and a second later the Arab bodyguards moved also along with them, looked like a synchronized dance. As Skyofblue said in ep.3 recap, I thought it was perfect, and I loved that visual. There was also an instrumental they played, as soon as the medical team started moving, and I am really hoping that piece will be on the OST, because it is a beautiful one as well.
I loved that YSJ’s men listened to him, though I have wondered if they could have decided not to follow his orders. Was DY the only one who could hear Colonel (or is he a commandant? I don’t remember) Park? In a situation, could the 2nd in command defy his superior’s orders? I was curious about that. I loved how sorry YSJ’s men were, for having to take YSJ’s gear, and I loved the visit MY had with him. MY finally started to realize (fully) what YSJ does, what he stands for, and what that can cost him. And she felt truly sorry for him, that was nice to see. her eyes are starting to be opened to his world, and what it entails. I found it interesting that MY impetuously decided to go talk to Commandant (or Colonel Park), thinking that it would be enough, and without consulting YSJ. I understood that she was upset, after YSJ explained to her that the military had to do what they felt they had to do (let him take the fall for disobeying orders and saving the Prdt’s life), why did she leave YSJ there? I know she was upset, but still...

i actually felt slight frustration w/ her when she did that, but i totally knew that it was in character for mo-yeon to go up all gusty and naive(?), trying to help shi-jin out of the mess, so i digress. and i agree with you. i know she was upset, but practically thinking, did she just leave him there? did she already guess that he could probably call one of his subordinates to pick him up or was she just gonna leave him there out of her anger/upsetness? i feel like i'm being overly critical sometimes, and maybe it's just her character, but her actions/attitudes make me so-- ???????

I believe she was hurt by SJ's words and probably don't want him to see her cry (she's has her pride). The script was written in such a way to give the most dramatic effect so they can make up later; however, her reaction would have been different if he softened a little.

That last bit you mentioned about MY parading up to the Colonel- actually I can see myself doing the same thing. Perhaps not to the same extent or as dramatic, but I would have done the same thing, merely because I don't fully understand military laws. They're not something I can comprehend. There's a lot more to them than meets the eye. For example, MY sees that he did a good deed in helping her be able to operate on the patient, but he also disobeyed on order. In crucial times, disobeying an order can be life or death. So I can see why they aren't allowed to get away with it, good deed or not. If they did, then everyone would be doing what they thought was "right" and there would be no order.
But in her position, and being concerned for him, she probably wasn't able to think it thoroughly, which I understand, although I hope she doesn't pull something like that again and does give her decisions more processing. It's a growth that slowly developing and I'd love to see it continue.

@ Sky and Ivoire and Everyone
Thinking about Mo Yeon. She's a character with 'human' flaws, one of them being a bit full of herself (I'm sexy when I do surgery), wanting to look good to others (like in making the most of her 'fame' but who doesn't and wouldn't) and being quick to judge and quick to act for what she thinks is the best (Ep 1 accusing Shi Jin of being a thug, jumping in to 'help' get him out of trouble). But her heart is in the right place (she bothered about the children), she is strong (stood up to sleazy Han) and she's flexible enough to learn from mistakes.
Although a promising character, not enough has been shown us about how she really thinks. We need more of her conversations with her doctor friend. She tells Shi Jin that she has changed in the 8 months when many things happened, but other than that she now has to look out even more for herself when she quits the hospital, we do not know what other changes she has undergone. In order to root more for her character, not only as the beautiful and brave doctor, but as a person with more to her than being mercenary, I hope we get to see more in the next episode.

Hi GB Unni,
Thank you for your response. Hi GB Unni,
I get that MY is a character with “human” flaws, and I am really OK with that. I can see how at the beginning of the drama she might be a bit full of herself, though when she said that “she was sexy when she did surgery,” I felt that she was flirting with SJ, the way he had been flirting with her. I actually felt that she flirted with him, because he had been encouraging her to flirt, showing her that he enjoyed that kind of banter, and that he welcomed having such interactions with her. If I had a boyfriend that I liked, or a potential man interested in me, and I knew that it was safe to flirt in such a way too, I would do it as well, especially if he had SJK’s (and SJ’s) qualities (or at least some of them)
Also to me, her wanting to make the most of her fame does not mean that she wants to look good to others (which I would equate to wanting others to think well of her). To be honest with you, I don’t get the feeling that she has tried to look good to others. The only person I saw her trying to impress was her boss, the one she was hoping would promote her. She did edit/work on his paper/thesis that was going to be published, wasn’t it? Although Dr. Song is her sunbae, I don’t see her trying to impress him, or trying to impress the rest of her staff. She seems to be kind, considerate and thoughtful of them. She has a great friendship with Dr. Pyo, and the rest of the staff seems to like her. She appreciates them as well, bringing them food when she slacks off at work, because of her TV’s commitments. They all seem to have a good rapport, and they all seem to care about each other (which I am loving).
MY being quick to judge and quick to act for what she thinks is best, I agree with. I partly attribute that trait of hers to her profession, where she might often have to make quick decisions. So to me, it could partly be her personality, and partly be her profession that made her that way. I also do agree that her heart is in the right place. She does come across as a caring person, and I even highlighted that earlier. She is not condescending to her staff (though she is their boss), and I love her interactions with Chi hoon and with his fiancée. And yes, she is strong, and I am hoping that she will stay that way, now that she is in Urk. And about her being flexible enough to learn from her mistakes, yes again. She did apologize to SJ when they were in the kitchen, and she didn’t have an attitude about it.
About how she really thinks, I think that I assumed (and I am hoping) that we will be given more info as the show unfolds. So far, I feel that I have enough info on her to get a sense (and an idea) of who she is, and of how she thinks. So for now, I am not (really) complaining.

To Sky, GB Unni, and to anyone who might have an answer to my questions, please feel free to comment:
1-I was really curious about this: did SJ’s men have to listen to him? How does that work in this case? (like we saw in the beginning of the drama). Could they all hear Lt. Park, or was it just DY? @ LollyPip said they could ALL hear him, when I thought it was just DY. Any thoughts?
2-When DY let MY speak to SJ, was he doing her a (personal) favor? I was curious about that, and it seemed as though he was.
3-How does SJ’s job always give him the lower hand in the relationship? (Conversation with MY). Because he could die? I was confused about that.
4-So SJ is no longer eligible for promotion for life? Really? I know someone below asked that question, and I am curious about that. Because if he is a really good soldier and a really good leader (which he is, at both), I don't want him to not be able to be promoted ever again. I mean, he already lost his pay (reduction) for 3 months.
5-Did DY’s ex still have feelings for him? Really? I didn’t think so (was not under that impression). I thought DY didn't want her to have any regrets (which is not the same thing). Did she marry the other guy while still having feelings for DY? (I was also curious about that).

Hi Ivoire
I can only attempt to answer, as I do not actually know for sure!
1) I'm not sure... maybe because SJ was going against orders, if they had wanted to, they could have refused to obey orders (risky as he was still in command) and gotten away with being disciplined. Generally I think the one giving the orders takes responsibility and the lower ranks just have to obey, so by rights they should obey... SJ knew however that he had good rapport with them and that they were more likely to follow his lead, especially since they could see the situation for themselves. As they all had an earpiece on, I think they could all hear what the Lt was shouting at Shi Jin.
2) Again I'm not sure if being detained in barracks is equal to not having visitors, however it does mean lots of privileges are gone. My guess is yes, it was a personal favour.
3) Probably between a doctor and a soldier, the job prestige of one is higher than the other? The doctor who saves lives is somewhat more highly regarded than a soldier who will likely have to kill and often faces the possibility of being killed.
4) No clue about the length of debarment.
5) I believe the visit to the weeding was more to assuage the guilt of the ex-gf and assure her that he was fine and wished her well... and I don't think she had any feelings for DY, only was afraid he'd upset the groom.

SJK's got a self-assurance that he didn't have earlier. He holds himself differently, he's got a calm/waiting vibe that he didn't have before, and it's really fantastic that this character still lets him go all-out with a playful side to the character too.

I know it's been mentioned before that Dae Young and Myung Joo's romance is pretty cliche, but can I just say that I STILL REALLY LOVE THEIR STORY. I replayed the flashback of them together after the wedding, and I just love them together! I'm totally rooting for them, and props to having a strong female soldier character!
I also just adored the part where Mo Yeon said that she wanted to hear Shi Jin's joke about coming home. That was adorable. Their chemistry is crackling.

For me, I loved when SJ said that MY was worrying about too many men, and that she should only worry about him. I just love how naturally SJ tells MY (often) how much he likes her, and the many ways in which he does that.
When MY told SJ that she wanted to hear him joke, I loved that she was letting him know that she thought that his jokes were funny. Men like to hear things like that.

It is undisputed fact that SJ fell in love with MY the very first time he laid his eyes on her even before they spoke (remember Ep 1). In the beginning it was her beauty that he fell for but later on it blossomed into something stronger but it started when he went back to the hospital for the dressing of his wound when he saw MY rushing into theater (operating room), this is when he totally fell for her and the kind of job she is doing.
Come to think about it, their jobs are similar. I mean SJ is working for the UN as a peace keeper and what does that imply......he has to ensure that there is no war therefore saving lives. And we know that doctors always are fighting to keep people alive......you see, same thing (war-zone) but
different fields.
I love this couple SJ and MY because they are face with obstacles (one being their jobs) but they still try to make their love blossom. Their characters are fit for each other since they compliment each other, the other is an extrovert , even though to some he will come as being sarcastic, he always know how to turn any bitter situation to be sweet and he is willing to teach her to let loose and live life (remember when he told her to be thankful whenever she is grateful and since then she is able to say thank you. On the other hand, she is something else (I am still looking for a polite word for her character)...I know some of you think its because of her profession......hahahahahah........if we had doctors with such characters we will be doomed. I think she has set high standards for herself and there has to be something that made her do that and SJ suspects it too therefore i hope we will learn more about her when the story unfolds.
The interesting thing is that even though SJ knows what kind of a person she is, he falls in love with her everytime they met, that is what we call love.

I really like this drama compared to the writer's other stuff because I feel like FINALLY we have a real connection between characters who are supposed to be in love. I've always felt in dramaland that we have these characters who are so desperately in love with each other but there is no real substance behind their feelings. Like, yeah I get it, you can't stand to be apart from each other, but when you're together, what do you guys talk about? What future do you envision together? LOL. I'm a realist obv. Here, we can see where two people's paradigms clash yet they help mold the other's in a way where it's organic and real.
Can't wait for the next ep!!! I wonder what her reaction will be after the kiss kekeke

But can someone tell me why the heck was she crying while driving away ? SJ wasn't rude/ dismissive when he said that it was military's protocol matter. The way she huffed off and cried all the way back, it just baffled me.
And they need to give SJ some faults. He is like too perfect. He is successful but not ambitious. He breaks rules but is very honourable. HE is a fantastic soldier but not seemingly burdened by it. He can be sensitive, fun, glib, perceptive - way too perfect ...... I need to see some greys, some issues, some problems, some vulnerability - anything.

Omg yes. I didn't want to seem like I was being too harsh or critical, but I really did think MY needed to grow up? Like girl, he literally just told you he shoulders the responsibility for everything, it's not her fault, he didn't do it because of her, and that military protocol is severe, why are you crying like he told you to fuck off? (Well, he kinda did, but like, not really? He seemed like he just really needed her to understand.) So yeah, I'm on the same page as you.

This is my take on why MJ cried.
She went out of her way to help SJ. Yet instead of receiving thanks, she got scolded severely by SJ for sticking her foot in "military business". It's no wonder that she's upset about it.
And SJ probably realised that (1) he was too harsh on her (how could she be expected to know the subtleties of military convention?), and (2) he mistreated her good intentions. Which explains why he wanted to apologise after.

I also see it like this.
I don't think she's crying out of embarrassment, but because she feels hurt. SJ could have told it in a less harsh manner. After all, she did it out of good intention for him.
She was hurt and was going to cry so had decided to drive away as she didn't want him to see it. She later must have know that it's overboard and apologize later.

Alot of ppl mentioned that she felt embarrassed - but i honestly don't see why. Its not as if she proclaimed her undying love for him and got publicly spurned.
She took responsibility as a doctor. The superior and him, both told her that it was matter of protocol. And i thought he told her pretty nicely. ok, even if you are embarrassed but whats the need to cry.

It's not really about love, but you just explained why. She took responsibility as a doctor, who is an authority figure in many situations, she's the head of her team, and was just told you aren't really that important, it's not your business, this is my problem. Obviously that would embarrass someone. She tried to help, and her authority as a doctor was not enough.
Her job is important to her. It's also not about how he said it, but just that she was worthless again in that moment. Like after she lost the promotion for the third time.
And some people just like to cry it out. There's no harm in it.

Well, actually she did give us a reason ( I was also very bewildered) but before she drove off she said, "I am sorry that my concern is interfering your work." To me that just suggests that she felt like the telling off was not warranted, like he could have just explained it nicely without rising his voice. But alas, this is a drama. Shi Jin is very straightforward and that can be very disarming. It felt like an attack coming from him and she felt embarrassed for not having considered his point of view so she reacted. We can all calmly say that she is over-reacting because we are not the one being told off by him so honestly and bluntly. He is not wrong in doing so, in fact, it is refreshing but it is hurtful. Especially when she did all this out of concern for him. She is very one-track minded while Shi Jin tends to think out his actions a bit more and consider their effects on others.
Also, someone mentioned she was embarrassed and she certainly was, lemondoodle is very close. In addition, the way I saw it, she was in the room and she did say she could save him therefore she felt equally responsible but he was a little too eager to write her off the equation. She was embarrassed to have not considered what he considered, mad that he thinks that it was all about her when she was concerned about him. Moyeon is really not a perfect character but I do think he deserved some time in the desert for not being tactful enough, it sucks to have the guy you like tell you that you didn't think it through however true it is. Personally, I enjoyed watching him pout and being one-up by her. Yes, it was petty of her but come on, it was seriously entertaining!

That concern that MY said she had when she went to see the commander, is it from a doctor or a woman? I really think it was from a woman because if it was from a doctor, she would have put herself in his shoes. The man just lost his candidacy for promotion and a reduction of salary for three months.......which state would he be? I mean she came without knowing the outcome of the disciplinary action, understandable.....i would have done the same thing as a woman. However after hearing the outcome what would a reasonable person have done? But since we are talking of MY, i think SJ took the right decision to put her in her place.

I get your point but My has this ego that she is always right and her actions are always for the benefit of all and mind you SJ has always let her think like that but this time around he had to point it out to her. This is not the first time, remember the issue of lead poisoning, he was pushed to limits......i think.
I watched all the four episodes again and realised that SJj only point it out to her when her actions affects not only him but extend to others. If her actions only affects him, he does not do anything, he just let it go.

Actually, I was just trying to give light to her perspective but I definitely agree with you that she needed to hear what he was saying. Out of the two, Shi Jin is definitely the more mature one. I think he pushes her to grow while she teaches him more about being in a relationship and what it entails. It is more than just being charming but also considering how your words would affect your partner. He is definitely right and in fact, it is good that he told her so honestly and why he did so was also because he cares and likes her.
Val
March 7, 2016 at 6:08 PM
Definitely agree with the difference in how they think, like I mention in an earlier comment that they make decisions very differently: Moyeon is individualistic in her decisions since they affects the patient and at most, the family members but Shi Jin thinking is more collective for he makes decisions on a whole different level that could involve an entire country. The stakes are very different but I don't think either thinking is better than the other, they each have their merit. She isn't wrong in her thinking but she should have considered his like what he was trying to tell her.
With that said, Shi Jin may be a great and mature person but he does have his flaws. He is not particularly used to being tactful or taking social cues very well. Like he went overboard with the mine joke without realizing that it was going to upset her however harmless it is. For someone who was never placed in such a situation, she was genuinely frightened. While we all love Shi Jin, he is not all that perfect either. His debonair and jesting nature comes as a double-edge sword: while it is very charming, he can come off as callous and blithe indifference to others. He seemed to use jokes as his way of dealing with the sort of immense responsibility and seriousness of his job; it lightens the situations by making it less serious and also prevents him from getting too involved/attached. To me, there is something about making light of almost everything that I find very fascinating for someone who has a life-and-death job. That's how he deals with all of it. There are moments when the enormity of his occupation and the situation hits him and those are my favourite moments because he is not hiding behind his jester facade but dealing with the reality in all honestly. He seemed most like himself when he is being serious and when he is explaining things to Moyeon, dealing with the bodyguards, feeling unjustified for his best friend, worrying about his future/relationship with her because of his jobs...In all these quiet moments, he is facing reality and the really good person he is comes into the foreground. He doesn't really need the jokes to be charming but it is how he seemed to deal with the enormity and gravity of his work.

true words indeed @ manga save to say that it is not that he was saying it is none of her business but rather he wanted to point out that military law is different from other laws and irrespective that he did an honourable job he still went against an order and he has to be punished for that.
Now the issue here is that her involvement into military issues will even make matters worse for him and he has to put in such tone for her to get it...we all know that he knows her and how skeptical she can get.....so he had to use that tone which to me was not harsh but authoritative. The same would apply in her field if she has a patient, she will just have to put her foot down and take control of the situation.
if she did not cry i would have been worried because her crying to me meant that she realised that she acted without thinking about repercussions hence she saw it fit to apologise later when they met. Our girl is growing and we have to let her do that, when she falls...guess who will be there to pick her up..............cute

I loved the flashbacks as well. And did anyone notice that MJ was the one who did the "wrist grab?" KYAAAA!!!!!
I find MY to be impulsive at times, and that would be something she needs to grow from. I reasoned that she might have been or felt overwhelmed by what SJ told her. She might have realized that she had not (at all) thought about the military side of things, and how things are handled on that end. Yes SJ made the decision, and he should pay the price, and he accepted that. That is how things go at times in the real world. Because you do something honorable does not mean that all will be well in the end. There might still be consequences, a price to pay. And she just didn't consider that. I assumed that she couldn't be near him, she might have felt too guilty at that time, so she just took off. Poor guy...
I understood her crying, I think I would have done the same. Maybe she was also beginning to realize that she had judged SJ too quickly when they were in the cafe, and that she had read him wrong, at least to an extent. I can understand her huffing off, I think that it was more about her than anything else. Her leaving him though was really rude, and so inconsiderate. I was baffled by that as well.
Re: SJ, I am hoping that we will learn more about him as the drama unfolds. For now, him being perfect does not bother me. And I feel that so far, he has been open and somewhat vulnerable with MY. He lets her know how he feels, though they have not gotten to the deep things yet. I guess we have 11/12 more epis. for that?
I now understand what to me looks like SJ's pensive looks at times. He might be trying to read MY, and so far he is doing well, it seems.

Yes, I liked that wrist grab of hers which he converted into a pull into a hug. What to do, he was still bigger, heavier and stronger so even with her huge backpack, she got pulled in LOL! But it was a hot scene too!
About MY, I commented above (2.4.1) ... and I agree about her impulsiveness. I agree with @Miranda that she cried and left Shi Jin out of humiliation.
On her surprise that Shi Jin could die - I'm a little surprised that a doctor who sees death in surgery, who notices gun shot wounds from her experience in Africa... still has not got her head wrapped around the idea that Shi Jin's job could kill him. It seems to have been a back-of-the-mind thought to her... 'somewhere people get shot and die' but faced with a real person and personally faced with a gun pointing at her.... she still did not make that complete connection. That's a bizarre naiveness, but maybe it's also part of her charm?
On Shi Jin... I can't say he's perfect. He gets carried away with his jokes. But I rather like them and I was not perturbed by the land mine joke, although he could have seen how scared she was but didn't notice until she cried. One of the foibles of human nature to not notice the true situation in time, and to regret it. But that is his charm. That he does not remain blind or misinterprets the situation, but quickly picks up the pieces, admits his errors and apologises.
Would love a Shi Jin like character in my life!

She was crying because she was humiliated.
She's used to being the voice of authority - doctors have a lot of sway, and when they make calls about their patients that tends to be the last word. In almost any other circumstance, she WOULD be able to intervene and lessen someone else's punishment.
I thought it was a really good scene. They're two professionals, both very good at what they do and very proud of their careers, and this was not a bad way to show the overlap. I also liked that Shi Jin doesn't seem to be embarrassed because he was defended by a girl or any other gendered nonsense, and he's not attacking her personally - he's a little embarrassed himself, he's frustrated, and he explains exactly why he didn't need or want intervention.
It was interesting, because I can't say either of them was wrong in their choices, but that is a discussion that needed to be had and this just happened to be the catalyst.

I think you're right and that what made her drive off was the borderline condescension... But at the same time I totally got why he would sounds like that, soldiers REALLY do not like civilians getting into their business.
Ironically, they're both in positions where they're used to being the final word, but also positions where no one else can really undermine them other than their bosses. When MY spoke up, she probably thought that vouching for SJ could only help him, because in her world a doctor vouching for you certainly wouldn't hurt. But in this world, there actually was a downside in that it would have been better if she hadn't interrupted at all.
And with SJ, he's used to making decisions that he is completely, 100% ready to take on consequences for. He knows what the fallout is and he's braced himself. To have MY jump in disrupts his entire ecosystem and, from his POV, kind of undermines his ability to make his own decisions - or at least to take on the consequences with full knowledge.
I do think SJ is both embarrassed and frustrated, and is also feeling the pain of being taken off the promotions list, so he is working VERY hard to tamp down on those emotions. It still comes through as somewhat condescending, but.. He's not wrong. They're in a war zone, and in a war zone, the military has the final say. He's a little stunned that she doesn't understand that, and he's awkwardly trying to make that division clear.
And MY is just completely embarrassed. She's not used to being discounted, as she just thoroughly was in the command post. She's aware that she's somehow embarrassed SJ too, which is the opposite of what she intended. And now he's personally putting her in her place, and as valid as his speech is, this is kind of the last nail in the coffin: she's supposed to be a top-flight surgeon, and she IS a top-flight surgeon as she just proved in the medcube, but instead she's in a war zone with the reputation of a TV doctor and the stigma of a CEO scandal, AND her ex is onsite, and now even the military is telling her to shut up - through her ex!
Childish to drive off without SJ, but damn. The more I think about it, the more I can't blame her for just having had enough. (Though I do think it's hilarious that SJ accepts the whole thing with a sort of "ah, well" when she drives off and leaves him.)

He admitted why he doesn't want her to be a part of that, but if he wants to seriously date her he's going to have to learn to lean on her. She can't understand him if he's hiding things. I remember SJ s shoving the nurse scene in ep 1.... I don't think she was embarrassed but more like she was shaken by what he said and how he said it, not expecting him to react that way especially in view of how he used to treat her.
The crying to me came across as part of an emotional release...I thought SHK did an excellent job there--how she quickly wiped off the tears and her slight change in expression showed MY didn't cry out of pity for herself or anger at SJ.
And since I'm talking about her, I must as well comment on this too: while many have criticized that she acted rashly by confronting his superior, I don't think so. Don't forget his superior told her off that her decision to save the Arab ruined his career. So her trying to appeal for SJ was to me a very natural response.
To me, SJ wasn't altogether honest when he said he didn't do it for her. DY being closest to him saw that clearest. He's the one who is a closed book when it comes to approaching this relationship. He hasn't been upfront about what he does to MY--girls need security and he hasn't provided that. How do you expect her to react? She's not in it for a fling. It's damn frustrating to get involve with a guy who can't be open for right or wrong reasons.

You are definitely right, we ladies tend to demand more from man such as honesty but we cant handle honesty, therefore it is us again who force man to lie to us. I think SJ is not willing to tell MY everything about himself but he also know that MY would not be in a position to handle it...remember when he said his job on its own give him a lower hand...why is that? because she judges him according to his job and not his personality and that is why when it comes to issues of his job he is more secretive.
Lets go to Ep 3 when they broke up, he was telling her about his job and just like her job, they are not allowed to divulge all information concerning their work. How did she take it? she judged his job and the funny part is that she new from the beginning (end of episode 1 and beginning of episode 2) that this man is involved in a dangerous job but still she fell for her. You see my point...when SJ confirmed what she had always known she could not handle it.

Yah I totally agree with you @bips99. He is way too perfect but it is not that he is not ambitious, I think SJ loves what he does because he understands why he is doing it. He is very hurt by the disciplinary measures but he also accept that he disobeyed an order and that even makes him more of a soldier. He did not become a soldier for money or promotion or anything less that to protect humanity and that is why he said he has always chosen his country over anything. who can say that except a patriotic.
However i think we are set to see his flaws in the comes scenes because it seemed to me that some of his decisions, whilst in the job, will be solely based on one person ....and we all know who.....there is a saying that the fall of a man is due to a woman.

Hello Sophie,
I loved this, "Le sigh. SJG <3"
And I really liked your perspective. I too look forward to the next ep. I have been wondering if this is when we will see that scene they had showed in one of the teasers, the one where he says, "should I apologize, or should I confess?" It now makes me think that he could have meant, "Should I apologize (1st), or should I confess (1st)?" In the context of the end of ep.4, and in the context of the kiss scene, it would make sense if he said that. She would have of course walked out, and he would have followed her out. I have always wondered what he meant in that teaser. Now I want to look for that teaser, and see if they are wearing the same outfits as the ones they are wearing at the end of this ep.

But she does seem to still be in her clothes...
I'm wondering how she's going to react..Push him away maybe? Considering he's saying "Should I apologize..."

@sky
I think I remember seeing SJ taking off his dress uniform at the preview /end scenes of ep 3... Because I was waiting for that scene to materialize in ep 4.
It could be that after the KISS, MY is so surprised that she would run out the door. Then SJ, regretting his action, take off his green dress uniform tie and all, into his grey shirts, did some thinking and go out of the door to chase MY.... Thus followed by that scene from the teaser.
What do you think?
PS:
This is exactly why I love reading beanies comments. They helped me understand the characters better after watching the episode, opening eyes to the subdues, the hidden messages behind unspoken dialogs and stares and gazes.. Aahhh... Reliving the swoon moments etcetc ... I could go on and on, but I better stop now.

Hmm....I agree that she would run out, but I don't know where his wardrobe change came from. Maybe they saw each other again that night, and he'd changed?
And to your post-script- I agree completely. I gain so much new insight on the drama and characters through these comments. Often, I don't care enough of the drama to go through comments and just read the recapper's analysis and leave it there, but I've become really invested in this as you see, and thankfully there's a lot to talk about. I hope that it stays this way and we'll have a wealth of discussion.

Yes i remember the teaser also but come to think of it, what is he confessing to cause he has already confessed to loving her since the first episode and now we just seen her confessing also in episode 4. I cant wait.......now days have become years for me.
Can someone tell me if he/she understands the story line for this drama. I am now confused.

For Asians, confession means you have to say the L word out love to really mean confession. I think in the early episodes, it's just mutual attraction. Their relationship has not progressed to "love" yet.

The last scene had me so goddamn fangirl-y it was unreal. We've already touched upon this, but SJK's gaze, his emotion. God, he's soooo got this character down and I'm enjoying it so much. The build up, the conversation, everything.
That being said, another part I loved about this episode was the DY and MJ scenes. I love this couple, the dynamic is so intriguing and so... alive? She's the commander's(?) capable, headstrong daughter and he's the loyal, rule-abiding soldier. Their banter in the restaurant with DY saying "soldiers have wild imaginations" and "we could make those rumors true" I absolutely LOVE. Her cute angry reactions and his straight-faced responses have me squealing all over the place. It's a shame that's the past though, and the airport scene, ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, I'm screaming. You can see how the hug just breaks her, god that emotion is so raw. I love it.
From watching the previews and little clips they released ahead of time, I can't say I love the direction this is looking to go, but SJK's acting and the secondary couple make me really want to stick with it til the end. Also, the drama's so pretty and I'm shallow haha. I like pretty things.

definitely. i understand a lot of people are saying she's embarrassed, and in retrospect i get that, but somehow when i watched the show, my first reaction was ??? what happened? i think it's partially due to how she's out of her depth here and isn't used to being not in charge of things. like lollypip said, she has the most development to do, as far as we know, and like you, i'm anticipating her growth towards equal footing with shi-jin again.

I couldn't believe DY suggested they made the rumors true. I was like, "Did he just say that?" And I loved most that he said that with a straight face. That was the best part. JG really does look good with KJW, considering they are 12 years apart.

@ GB unni,
As much as I appreciated his joke, I do think (like you do) that he was hoping (on a level) that she MIGHT say "yes." I think that he was curious to see her reaction. I think that he knew that she would not agree to it, however he is guy, and he loves her (or he might have just been attracted to her at that time). Would he have said "no," if she had said "OK!"? Maybe, because wanting to do it, and actually working the nerves to do it are two different things, I think (they are for me). And there is the whole ranks' differences they have in the military. I don't think DY would actually let risk her reputation, and possibly her career with such an action.
You know, Lollypip mentioned that DY reminded her of Earnest Bot (aka ESK) from TK2Hs. The thing with Earnest Bot was that he was innocent, very innocent, and even LJH (the king) was surprised when he had not made a move on his sister, and had not tried anything (by the time they had the date in the garden). So, Earnest Bot would have NEVER suggested that they made the rumors true, i.e. sleep together, and put those rumors to rest. That was one of the reasons why I was so surprised that DY made that suggestion, I didn't expect that. He does remind me of ESK, but only to an extent. And this joke showed me one of the ways in which he is different from ESK. And he deserved the whacking he got, though the whole scene was fun :-)

@ Ivoire
Even outside a 'dating' relationship proper, as you probably know, it seems that men think of sex quite a bit. In fact anywhere men and women are together, and not totally opposed to each other, the possibility arises, thus the sexual tension.
Putting that DY-MJ scene in context... they are in a pseudo-dating relationship, they see each other several times, they don't seem to lack a certain attraction for each other and there are rumours about them since they admit to be dating, it seemed to me that it was quite normal and expected that the idea having been tossed about among the army folks would be also something DY had thought about. That he was honest enough to mention it openly and put it to her as a question is the nice thing about him. He did not corner her somewhere and try to take advantage of her and say that they might as well make the rumours come true in a situation where she was at a disadvantage.
In my long ago youthful days, even among us groups of friends, we did have a guy or two who'd teasingly proposition a girl or two right there openly in the group. He'd also have been given the whacking by the females present, with all as witnesses,... but it was honest and open, and so, I was not surprised.

I like Dae-young's character and backstory. But... And I might be in the minority here... I wish the actor would show a little bit of nuances or emotions at times. All I'm asking is a few seconds of emotion whether it's surprise, anger, longing for his woman, anything! Just for a few seconds. I feel that he has the same expression in all the scenes.

I also think so. Especially in moments were he's with SJ. I legit thought he didn't like the woman in the first episode because he was so stoned faced about not talking to her. He could let his guard down a little. At least so the audience can see his thoughts. A pained expression, or some regret would go a long way. I KNOW he loves her, but how it comes across is she's bothering him. I guess asking if SJ had seen her is about as much as we'll get.

I think that's actually what makes Dae-young, well, Dae-young. I don't think it's a fault on the actor necessarily, although he doesn't seem to have mastered acting with the eyes haha, but he's still pretty good. Dae-young is an upright man, and he seems to have always been poker faced. It bothers me often too, because I WANT to see more of him, but perhaps that's what makes him so compelling as a character- the fact that I'm constantly yearning for more behind that poker face of his.

@Tonto and if you paid her to produce recaps within 24 hours of their Korean airtime, then you would have every right to complain about slipped delivery dates.
But she does this for free, and you are not out any money. So nitpicking over the order of recaps seems unnecessary and unhelpful. And frankly, if recapping the "more popular drama" guarantees more pageviews, then more power to them because those pageviews are what generate ad revenue. And ad revenue keeps the site up, which is what allows any recaps to be posted at all.

Remember that SJ and MY are the lead actor and actress therefore either way we are still going to see more of them, come action or romance hence it is a melodrama.
I will suggest that you just get use to them and be patient for the action scenes. Earlier on one beanie stated that this drama reminds him/her of English Patient, Pearl Harbour and ect. My point is action will be there, right now the writer is just making things clearer for us about the characters and also to be able to accept or accommodate the end of the show.

I really want more medical emergencies so MY and the doctors can shine, instead of them constantly being out of their element. I do want SJ and MY on equal footing like they were in the past. Can we please not just use her for handsome bad guy to kidnap to torment SJ? Which I'm sure is going to happen...
I'd also like HER to be called away once on their dates. She also has a very on call job, so for it to always be him annoys me slightly. They both have tough jobs that take them away from each other, so I hope that is explored more. Though I do like how he mentioned his job is a handicap so he has to work extra hard to win her over. Which she's obviously won't be able to resist too much longer.
The secondary OTP confuses me slightly because I don't understand what she wants him to do. Make promises he can't keep? I guess she wants him to fight as hard as she is, but he's not really willing so far. He doesn't really have the privilege or the rank to do so though so I can't fault him. It's tough to see, but they need to work out something together instead of this fighting and ignoring all the time. Just sit down and have a rational conversation would help.

"Can we please not just use her for handsome bad guy to kidnap to torment SJ? Which I’m sure is going to happen…" I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought about this hehehe pretty cliche but what can we do it's dramaland after all.
I also agree with the secondary OTP, I may be on the minority but I am still not 100% with them... as you point it out, not sure what she really wants from him... I know he likes/loves her but he ONLY has the army so he's totally in disadvantage in compare with her; she has the army but also she's a doctor so if she takes action because of her love she would have a career after the army... as for him... not sure about that.

I'm with you on this lemondoodles (sorry I had to do that, it sounded so cute).
I hope that with the coming conflict, there's more for the doctors to do at the site. I imagined they'd already have some work, but they're so free it's a little too unrealistic. Please, give the people something to do. But it may also be because directing all those medical scenes would cut time for the romance part of it, although I feel a bit more of a balance could be struck in this. Maybe cut out one flirting scene for the work scene? But I imagine the work scene both costs more and is harder than a flirting one. All things to consider.
As the for the secondary OTP, I like them, especially Dae-young, but I don't quite understand them either. It seems that Myeong Ju wants him to do something to still be with her, but she should know that if he does, he's damaging his reputation as a soldier in front of his superior...even if it is personal problems. He also knows he's not the best for her. I just don't get why Dad had to insert himself into this- I have a father too and I know he'd do the same thing, but after a point you just have to let it go.
Here's to hoping MJ finds reconciliation with her father in this matter, and that the two are able to get their issues together and solve them without more of this confusing arguments.

The secondary story has great actors, but I totally agree. That story cannot just be about unrequited love in the military. He is actually protecting her by staying away since she's the officer and realistically should know better. I just don't get where they are going with that because neither of those character (nor the general for that matter) can change military rules.
On the OTP, I get an episode or so of her being the fish out of water, but I want her to get her footing and be awesome. I get that the conflict is coming from her changing because of what has occurred, but it's a pretty weak scenario. It certainly isn't gonna last for 12 more episodes I hope.

Ok first things first.
1) Can I just say that SJK looks abso-freaking-lutely AMAZING in his dress uniform?
2) I want Mo-Yeon's entire wardrobe. (And what a coincidence that I saw on my Instagram newsfeed while watching ep 4 that her pink button up is from Stylenanda).
That said, I actually really like this show! Not so much for the plot/situation of the whole thing (because I'm not a fan of medical dramas/danger/violence and guns) but because of the characters.
I know in Ep 3 a lot of people were raging on Mo Yeon for her childish behaviour and her little spats of temper tantrums toward Si Jin and I was too, at first. But on hindsight, these are the little things that make Mo Yeon so human. She's not a cheerful, optimistic 100% sugary character, and she can't be expected to be a saint just because she's a drama character. And that's what I actually like - the fact that she feels so relatable to a real life me, who is prone to such tempers and moments of bitchiness. The good thing about this is that throughout the show, her character is given chances to improve and become a better person. (You know sometimes I rewatch the first few episodes of shows that I like and I'm amazed at how much the characters have changed but I just didn't realize as I watched the show).
And Dae Yong and Myung Joo's cute little flashbacks... GOSH. I love it. I thought I would dislike Myung Joo at first, but she clearly strikes me as a strong, brave woman, and the scenes of the two of them interacting in the past are adorable.
I don't think any words can describe my love for Si Jin. I don't think I'm the only one feeling this way. LOL.

I totally agree with you about KMY, I don't buy into this show's romance at all, but this episode made KMY my favorite thing about this show.
I love the realness and complexity of this character so far: having self doubt yet brave and authoritative under pressure; compassionate yet practical and business minded about money; stoic yet cute and playful when she wants to be.
I think we're starting to see KMY's character arc, of a pampered city doctor going into a war zone unwillingly. I want to see how she adapts, and how this experience changes her personally. Like you, I think she has the most room to grow and I love that.
I also love SHK's acting here. She brings an aura of being reserved and speaking calmly, yet being firm and tough underneath. Also her occasional sparks of playfulness remind me of Full House :)
I love SJK too, but I actually think the YSJ character is not as interesting. So far he seems like a standard hero who is cool and awesome and willing to do anything for the girl. That's great, but not much room for growth there.

Mo Yeon has plenty of flaws that can be worked on indeed! And by being forced out of her city comfort zone she definitely has a lot of character development potential.
I feel like maybe we are making quick judgements on Si Jin's character - I think perhapssss he might have some development to do in terms of what is right and what is wrong. I mean he's a soldier, he knows he has to follow orders and so on, and I feel like that's something that was a black and white thing most of the time for him, at least until MY started on the whole issue of life being sacred to her. We see it in the scene where he chooses to turn off his radio communication device and tell MY to just save the patient. Small, baby steps for him, maybe. Or perhaps I'm reading too much into it, and Si Jin has always been such a "perfect" male character. But I have hope that there will be some development on his part, in terms of the decisions he chooses to make because of MY's presence in his life.
And hopefully the romance shines through then - because what is love if it doesn't help you become a better person?
In the mean time though, I shall just enjoy having SJK on my screen again, he's been my favourite actor for so many years and I've waited so long to see him act again! Hehe.

I like MY the best too. I think she both has the most room to grow and is the most interesting character so far. I'm so not getting the she cries too much complaint either. I think every time she has has been justified.
The whole medical team also interests me more than the military side too, since they are in their element while the doctors are not. So I'm looking forward to them adapting to their situations.
SJ is very charming, but so far there isn't much "there". I want something more from him soon, because while again very charming, I'm not sure that can sustain my interest for 12 more episodes.

let me have a moment and say what i think about our fav captain and the doctor.
firstly we have to acknowledge that both have flaws and some of them came to be due to occupational hazard. Being a soldier means discipline and discipline means obedience to orders whether they make sense or not. You will recall that in episode 3 when they broke up SJ pointed out that what makes sense to him does not imply that it will to others, and from those words you could tell that he is a true soldier. On the contrary, being a doctor means preserving lives irrespective of any situation. Mind you both of them are good at their jobs as we have seen in episode 2 when the doctors was fighting to preserve the live of the patient in the operating room and the soldier was fighting to save the UN Representative in Afghanistan. The key word is FIGHTING. Both of them are in a battle field and the both of them are failing to understand the rules for each battle field. THAT IS A FLAW.
There are so many flaws that each have and like some of you already said, I strongly believe that both of them are going to grow, develop and learn from each other as long as they let their LOVE BLOSSOM. Because from that LOVE they will be open to learn from each other and develop together......... what a great love story will unfold from these two..................
Am loving this...maybe I should write a rom com......hahahahahahahahahahhahahah........a girl has to dream.

It seemed that most of the characters, such as Mo-yeon, showed a lot of depth in this episode. The fact that she stood up to a high official and wanted to take responsibility because she felt bad was very bold of her. I loved how she asked for two of the "passes" which means that she was thinking of how Shi-jin would use it too, because he is always in a battle-field situation. It shows a lot of heart on Mo-yeon's part. I still don't really like Myung-joo's dad but at the same time, I understand him. This is just my opinion, but because since her dad is a high army official, he knows what type of world Dae-young lives in and will live in. To me, he's looking out for Myung-joo in a fatherly manner, which is maybe another reason Dae-young is backing off. There are a lot of men serving their countries who die leaving loved ones behind and that loss is often times something that cannot be healed. I feel like both Mo-yeon and Myung-joo are out for some heartbreak, especially after rewatching the main teaser for the drama. But hopefully, I'm wrong.

Scarred by heirs! Lol. At least we won't see SJK in a fluffy pink sweater!
This writer seems to write female characters who need saving. Doesn't bode well for Mo Yoen to regain herself enough to enter into her love relationship with Shi Jin as an equal partner, full of competency and confidence. I want their relationship to move beyond the pretty, though the pretty is crackling and sexy on both sides!

1) Something about Mo Yeon rubs me the wrong way. But I'm not turned off by it and I find it humanizing. Mo Yeon is very... self-righteous? But why wouldn't she be? She probably hasn't experienced a lot of "real" struggles in life or anyone really questioning her. Her oblivilousness to her privilege is somewhat off putting but leaves tons of room for character development.
2) Because I'm saying this outloud, I hope I'll be wrong but I'm totally getting the vibe that viewers need to prepare themselves for a key character death. It's like watching The King 2 Hearts in retrospect. When you watch it the second time; dude's fate is totally obvious. This drama feels like a repeat. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

I think with this writer, we don't need to shelf obvious as a reason for her not to do it. I'd love to give her the benefit of doubt though.
Please, everyone do people HAVE to die?! Okay, yes they do it's a war zone I get it, but why do you have to set them up for death just as they're growing up and getting a life?! (as characters I mean)

I definitely think she's going to kill someone off in a cheap way to make everyone cry. War zone and all of that.
Maybe the cute former thief? I think the women are safe, but that would be interesting if one of them died. I don't want it to happen though obviously... If anyone has to die, please make it more reasonable than TK2H and City Hunter (two of my most unnecessary death of beloved character dramas)

Although I will be very sad over death of one of our leads, where it is worked in as a normal consequence of the action taken and decisions made along the way, it will be acceptable.
The only hope that goes with such a sad ending... let the death be honorable and let it bring closure. :( :)

I loved loved the last scene. It was soO good.. :))
Soon Joong Ki's sexyyy gaze, Song hye kyo's drunk and cute expressions. And the way he kissed her was soO good..
The thing that I like about Kim Eun sook's dramas is that the leads in her dramas have skinship and romantic kiss scenes sooner in starting from ep 4 or 5. In typical Kdrama(not all of them), leads usually have a lot of fight till ep 7-8 and then finally they realize they like each other and kiss.
Kim Eun sook's drama have pretty scenes, romantic kisses and nice dialogues. AND of course funny one liners and jokes.
So far I like this drama. But I have always thought KES writes good male characters and not very good female characters. I have a lot to say about Soong Joong Ki's character. But I think SHK's character is typical, and not very deep. That is my idea.. Maybe there is depth to her character but I still haven't figured out. I feel like sometimes her character in this drama is silly and weak.
I really LIKE SHK and I LOVED her character in TWTWB. In that drama, she was smart, not a pushover, a bit of a kick-ass.

Thank you for the recap! It's been a long time that I like a drama enough to want to comment =)
A number of things about this show just really work for me:
1) It's a melodrama but both leads have much bigger things to devote their passion to than just their romantic relationship.
2) Both leads cut to the chase when they converse, and are often funny+witty at it.
3) The setting is refreshing.
4) Great chemistry between SJ and MY, or SJK and SHG! Great chemistry/lovely onscreen friendship between SJ and DY as well.
5) Great supporting cast! I think I literally like every non-villain character with a name in this show =D Actually even the villain looks like he's got some interesting backstory as well which is just great!
Here is hoping show continues to be entertaining to the end- not an easy task at all, but if it manages to do that Descendants of the Sun might potentially become an all time favorite for me =)

Just a little note here that your points 1), 2), 4), 5) also apply to the drama, Healer, and that this drama and Healer are the products of the same PD, Bae Kyung-soo. (Thanks to @Snacks for this info). So we have reason to be optimistic!!

Yes, I'm actually starting to do what I did with Healer ie watched live stream and then with subs... then if I can find some more time, I may re-watch bits to catch things I missed.
About the nuanced characters and how relatable they are... another thing I felt was so great in Healer.... I do seriously like that Shi Jin, "the man" is strong but willing to bend. He was able to admit he has the disadvantage, able to apologise and speaks the truth even to his own disadvantage while looking a person in the eye. I like how he took responsibility, how he had no regrets and how his honour and right judgement was acknowledged by his best friend.
And Dae Young is such an amazing 'brother' soldier to have. He has ability but instead of being bitter, he's a loyal sidekick to Shi Jin, understands him so well that he can practically read his mind and is his strongest supporter. Those words of support and respect for Shi Jin were just the bees knees in solidifying their friendship, and I feel, exactly what Shi Jin needed to hear. :)

I'm glad you brought up the mention of the two comrades. As LollyPip has stated, I do feel like the term of bromance can't be applied here. There's something that runs deeper, something based on pure respect and admiration of the other that holds these two together and even without a fight scene I can no tell that these two would be willing to risk their lives for each other.
That scene in the storehouse, where DY came to give his report was so touching. How highly he regards SJ and also gives him comfort- it was so perfectly said.

I don't really care for the actual plot of this story. I feel it's pretty messy and poorly written. But the SJK and SHY are fabulous and they really are saving this drama for me. I really like all of the characters too. I am also invested in the second leads love story as well. So far characterization is pretty good. The plot isn't that horrible, but I think it lacks a lot of details and its lazy in writing.

I think Soong Joong-Ki has made his character alive and he is delivering it superbly. That is the key to making this a delicious treat:)
The main attraction for me is the romance build up and the live tension between the two leads. It is building up nicely and the kiss was aggressive and honest. Love it!!
The second male is very good. His personality, his comradry and his strory with the 2nd lead girl is good. Well written.
Coming back to the star performance of SJK:
I love his intense gazes. He wants to eat her up but he is prolonging this desire tension and the drama is playing on it. Does anyone remember other dramas that keep this hot no nonsense chemistry but play it out in a mature and realistic way? Please please let me know if you can think of any other dramas that executed this well.

I really like this episode and I think the strength of this drama is in the dialogue.
It feels real and it not just useless banter, it gives layered to their personality, enough layered to care about them.
- I like when they medical team converse after the surgery and they all seems so scare about making a mistake and we see how one guy operate the other woman's mom (sorry to forget their name),
- I like their little moment, like when Onew little by little realized that being a father is a real responsibility, he used to be carefree and now he feel that he can't just recklessly die.
- How they admire the morning jog (ofc, blatant fan service that self aware is always welcome)
- how shi jin comrade knew his choice and follow the procedure and still show their regret on what happen to him.
- The villain that looked determined and the acting is acceptable,
- the korean-russian nurse, I thought her speech is really awkward, turn out she hasn't been in SK for quite a time
and I have to said their visual is really good,
- the editing, I like when they tell a story and cut it to the actual scene when shin jin told about DY story
- the cameo, I mean there's lot of people who doesn't have name but they appear normal, like the children that play (the number is rational), the ex girfriend that married, the other soldier in many scene, the shi jin friend's memorial has enough people, the existence of other people in the cafe
-the OST : I love it all, oh I am seriously in love with all the ost, connected to the drama or nor
then the overall visual,
I mean everyone looked sharp and good,
this drama show how fatal it is to have good looking actor act so good (looking at Song Jong Ki, and Jin Gu), not to mention the shooting location, It's awesome

Thanks for the recap.
I love GooWon couple (that's what they are calling DaeYoung-MyungJu).
From their first teaser, I have loved their story. I know it's cliché, the girl is on a higher rank, the boy is on a lower rank and to top it off, her father is a general who doesn't want them to be together. Cliché.
But the actors do a great job in making it much more than that. The complex emotions DaeYoung shows while interacting with MyungJu or for that matter anything relating to her, makes me want to know more about what he thinks about her and their relationship currently. (or the relationship they had).
I love the scene where he tells Shinjin that 'him running away is by order and not by will.' It shows he is not really willing to push MyungJu away. I guess he would have loved having MyungJu around but he also knows that her father would never let that happen. And thus the transfer.
The entire airport scene + the flashback is very complex in the way that Dae Young went to tell her ex to live happily with someone else and not have any regrets (ie him being considerate/nice towards her) and yet can't tell that same to MyungJu, even when he has broken up with her. I can totally understand MyungJu's pain, confusion and anger there.
MyungJu as a character is very strong, standing up for Dae young in front of her General father when she very well knows what he can do to Dae young. It shows the trust and love she has for Dae young.
I'm still waiting for an episode which will helps me to understand Dae young's reasons to push her away (his actual reasons and not that we are assuming right now) yet love(?) her.
Strong feeling that the drama is gonna be a rollercoaster ride from here on. Looking forward to it.

Dae Young pushing away Myung Joo is noble idiocy due to her father telling him to think of Myung Joo's future. He is an enlisted soldier who has risen to be a sargeant on the Alpha team of the special forces, but Dad doesn't see him as worthy of his doctor/officer daughter.
Dae Young, with his military rule-obeying and honorable character, loves Myung Joo but deep down agrees with Dad that he isn't good enough for Myung Joo in the long run. Dad is being a snob, but this plays into Dae Young's self-doubt fueled by Dad's disapproval as dad and authority as commander.
It's consistent with Dae Young's character of putting his feelings aside in order to give his ex-girlfriends the freedom to get on with their lives without him. The problem is Myung Joo loves him and won't let him go. Dad said he wouldn't order Dae Young to break up with his daughter unless he had to. Because Myung Joo won't go with Dad's wishes, she repeatedly and succesfully tries to be deployed to where Dae Young is. This is when Dad orders Dae Young's transfer and Dae Young can't refuse the order.

Thanks again LollyPip.
I went back to watch the start of Episode 1. It had the night sky filled with stars, but we were given a new perspective when the view zoomed out or backwards and we came to realise that we were seeing that beautiful sky through a hole in a broken helmet. Would anyone have survived a wound made with a blast that created that hole? Is so much that is above and beyond us only visible to us through the limited viewpoint of human confrontation and death?
Shi Jin said rightly that he and Mo Yeon do not seem to be meant to just pass each other by, but to bump against each other, and I'd like to add... in the process rub off more sharp edges, and find out if their paths can converge. I love how we are given what on the surface looks like a romance, but that the perspectives on motivations shown to us, get us thinking beyond the normal cliches.
In the first 2 episodes, I complained about the strange insertion of facile scenes that felt discordant with what I felt should have been the overall tone. However, I'm expecting we'll have one or two of these scenes in most episodes and I've come to terms with them as additions that lift the tone. I find them cute quirks in a show that would otherwise be just overly serious or seriously romantic/melo. And they give us characters who are not smart and suave all the time ie as a wise friend of mine says,... normal, imperfect 'people' type of characters.
So we have the nurses wondering if they left gauze in the patient! Doctors pulling hair and having hissy fits, soldiers playing in the games arcade, Chi Hoon panicking over losing a couple ring. It could well be that this was written in on purpose ie not bad writing or a mistake at all, but planned to be included in this show. And since they had months to review and edit, I veering towards this point of view. :)

I've replayed the ending of ep 3/ beginning of 4 so many times. Someone stop me. I have work to do.
After seeing it a couple dozen times, I have to remark, I noticed this the first around but it's bugging me. Are guns usually cocked like that? The way SJ held it, his right arm was straight, and his left dropped but supporting the right. I didn't see many others who were holding his kind of going with the same stance. Is this usually how they're held? I'm used to seeing people shoot one handed with these in movies, but from what I've seen so far, he's usually shot with both his hands grasping the barrel.

not 100% certain but i think that's actually the correct way to shoot a gun, with one hand aiming and actually pulling the trigger, the other hand acting as support to absorb the kickback and keeping the shot true to aim
anyhow, SJK being fresh out of the army should know, right?

I have only one small problem with this episode. What the hell is Myeong joo talking about? Telling Dae Young "you're running away again" etc. She knows he has no control over where he goes. So her defiant little tirade to her dad last episode was an exercise in futility and she knows why he's leaving. I thought that scene a little silly but at the same time we at least got to see that Dae Young does care about how miserable she is. She really does come off as being rather immature for an officer and army brat. She knows better than most what's expected of a solider.

i think it's mostly because DY hasn't cleanly broke up with her, and simply 'ran away' from their relationship, avoiding her & her calls and such- basically leaving her hanging. she's frustrated, and wanted clear answers- is he done with her, or does he still have feelings for her and if so, are they gonna fight for their relationship.
her tantrums do come across as childish but with DY being as stoic as he is, it's probably the only way to break through him

At this point I'm not sure he ever really "dated" her since all we've seen so far is them "pretending" to date. Is that what happened, they "pretended" to date and she caught feels? Yeah, I think she should be the one who fixes things and she'll fight for their love and change her father's mind, not for her to want him to do it. What power does he have? None at all.
The whole take responsibility for touching me thing seems a bit backwards to me. I get she's saying take responsibility if you are not going to totally dump me, but I feel she should take responsibility for wanting to date a guy her father doesn't like, and who probably improper to date anyway given their differences in rank. I can't help but think she has all the power to change things, and he has none.

I am not really into the main romance yet. The second lead romance seems much more interesting at this point, even if features an overdone cliché with the overprotective father. The main male character is really charming but Song Hye Kyo´s acting seems too forced at times, both in the supposedly cute scenes (simply does not fit her) and the dramatic ones (you can make a drinking game about how often cries and already cried).

She hasn't cried that often though. Four times? I think.
