Descended From the Sun: Episode 11
by LollyPip
There’s a different sort of war to be fought now, and the doctors are prepared to show the soldiers how they fight. The virus scare has the entire base locked down tight, and it’s the medical team who are in charge now, as they try to keep the illness from spreading. But just when things seem to be under some control, a new threat looms, and someone will decide that the only way to catch a rogue is to go rogue yourself.
EPISODE 11 RECAP
Myung-joo tries to push Dae-young off of her, worried that he’s breaking her quarantine. The desperation with which he holds her and the look in Shi-jin’s eyes when he enters the operating room betray the truth — Myung-joo is infected.
She admits for just one moment that she’s scared, then does what she needs to do. She tells Shi-jin to take Dae-young from the room, though he whispers that he has no intention of letting go or leaving her alone. But he’s now at risk for making contact, so he’s got to be quarantined away from Myung-joo, as a confirmed patient.
Mo-yeon takes a blood sample from Dae-young, and he asks what will happen to Myung-joo. Mo-yeon confirms that the virus has a fifty-percent kill rate, but she reassures Dae-young that the fatality rate is a lot lower for a young, healthy patient.
She’s a little more clinical with Shi-jin, explaining that a strong immune system isn’t necessarily a good thing. Myung-joo could experience what’s called a cytokine storm, an immune response that acts as a feedback loop, which can be fatal in and of itself. But Mo-yeon tells Shi-jin that fighting a virus is a doctor’s war, and she’s trained for this.
The Medicube is put to work as a base for treating the M3 virus. They set up an isolation ward, test everyone for the virus, and issue instructions about quarantines and hygiene to avoid spreading the virus.
Sang-hyun comes down with something and goes under quarantine, having been in contact with Young-soo before his surgery. He’s not too sick to flirt with nurse Ja-ae even as she’s drawing blood, and she says hopefully that she thinks he just has a simple cold.
This time it’s Dae-young who’s shut up in the supply cabinet, isolating himself in case he’s sick, and Shi-jin lingers around the door, lonely and whiny. He tells Dae-young that Myung-joo is still okay, and gives him a walkie-talkie so they can talk.
Dae-young and Myung-joo have a sweet conversation full of nothing-important, just reassuring each other that they’re alright. Dae-young looks like he might break when Myung-joo says she misses him, but he manages to eke out a small, “I miss you,” before he hangs his head in defeat.
Myung-joo mentions the white dress she wore when they went to his ex’s wedding, and remembers that he called her a ghost. Now she’s afraid it was a premonition, and that she might die and become a ghost for real. Dae-young counters that ever since they met, she’s been an angel to him. Myung-joo is touched, but she wonders what’s the difference between a ghost and an angel, when both of them are dead.
Until all the test results are back, the Medicube is under strict quarantine, and Mo-yeon calls Daniel regarding a vaccine they’ve requested. He reports that they should have it by the next day, and that UN forces have tracked down everyone that Young-soo came in contact with and had them tested, as well.
Shi-jin takes a report to Corps Command, where he learns that Myung-joo is to be sent to the U.S. military hospital as soon as possible. Shi-jin argues that they can’t send any actively ill patients out of the Medicube, and Lieutenant Park is aghast that he’s willing to flaunt orders again so soon: “Do you want to live here forever?!”
But Shi-jin stands firm, stating that this virus is their new enemy. If they don’t follow the rules, they can’t hope to win the battle.
Back home at the hospital, the staff watch the television worriedly for news of their friends and loved ones. Chi-hoon’s mother yells at Director Han again, for not doing anything to bring her son back home. She tells him to bring Chi-hoon back within 24 hours, or he’s fired, “And I won’t be friends with your mother anymore!” Well, okay then.
Sang-hyun uses his time to text Doctor Pyo, who does some research and sends him her findings. His hospital bed ends up looking like an office, with research notes stuck on the plastic dividers and books everywhere.
Myung-joo still looks healthy, but Young-soo isn’t doing so well. Private Ki-bum and patient Min-jae discuss the diamonds that were found in Young-soo’s stomach, and Min-jae says again that he saw those diamonds before, in Young-soo’s office. Min-jae asks Myung-joo how much those diamonds would be worth, gaping when she says it was about two million dollars’ worth.
Mo-yeon is waiting for Shi-jin when he arrives back from Corps Command, and he tells her they should have everyone’s test results by the next afternoon. They flirt just a little, enjoying each other’s company, and Shi-jin urges Mo-yeon to win her battle so he can hold her hand and snuggle like he’s dying to do.
While Mo-yeon is checking up on the children, the base loses power again. Mo-yeon remembers that Young-soo is still relying on a ventilator to breathe, and sure enough, the lack of the ventilator causes him to go into shock. He has a sort of seizure, knocking equipment over and flailing out of control, and Chi-hoon jumps on his bed to hold him down from doing any more damage.
The soldiers want to help, but Chi-hoon yells for them to just fix the power — if they come in they could be infected. He holds Young-soo while Myung-joo readies a sedative, but before she can administer it, Young-soo reflexively bites Chi-hoon’s arm, hard.
The sedative stops Young-soo’s seizure but he’s still not breathing, and Chi-hoon does chest compressions while Myung-joo uses the portable air pump. Mo-yeon arrives to help them, but Chi-hoon seems a bit frantic by now. He’s finding himself in the same situation in which he lost a patient last time, and he refuses to stop compressions.
It works this time, and Young-soo is stable by the time the power comes back on, and Mo-yeon treats Chi-hoon’s bite wound, warning him that this increases his chance of infection. She also tells him that Young-soo would have died without his quick action, saying matter-of-factly, “You’re a real doctor now.”
Min-jae is still helping out in the quarantine room, and he witnessed the entire frightening scene. He watches Chi-hoon, and asks Mo-yeon if he’ll get infected. She says that she hopes not, and Min-jae says to Chi-hoon, “You looked like a doctor.”
Min-jae leaves the room and Chi-hoon bursts into tears, but now he’s crying with relief. He tells Mo-yeon “I’m okay now. I can call my family now.” Later he calls his fiancee, and he tells her that he might be sick, but he’s smiling again. She tries to stay mad at him, but she can’t stay angry when he happily chirps how much he loves her, sounding like his old self.
The blood test results come back the next day, and everyone tests negative. Dae-young runs straight to Myung-joo’s quarantine room to see her, though she’s sleeping, and Shi-jin says that she’s still not showing any symptoms. Shi-jin brags that the UN plans to give him a special award for his quick response which stopped anyone else from getting sick, but Dae-young is barely listening.
They’re called away to an emergency in the cafeteria, and after they leave, Myung-joo sits up in bed. Oh no, she looks deathly pale, and she has trouble focusing her eyes. So much for being asymptomatic.
Things aren’t much better in the cafeteria — Shi-jin and Dae-young arrive to find that Argus has come to visit. He cheerfully informs everyone that he tested negative for the virus — the U.S. Army even tested him personally. He pretends to be here to visit his “friend” Young-soo, but he’s more than willing to just take his “sparkly stuff” and go.
Shi-jin growls that this isn’t a lost and found, and gives Argus ten seconds to get lost. Argus reaches into his jacket and every soldier in the room pulls their weapon, but he just produces a couple of vials of vaccine that he brought with him. They’re for Young-soo, who Argus wants healthy as soon as possible so that they can “talk.”
Ja-ae gets to tell Sang-hyun the news that the test results are back, and he’s ready to bounce back to work. For a moment Ja-ae’s red eyes seem to say she has bad news — but she confirms that he only had a cold, and throws her arms around him. Ohthankgoodness.
She suddenly realizes that she’s given herself away and tries to back off, but Sang-hyun grabs her arm and whirls her back to him in slow motion. I just love how these two are living out a melodrama all by themselves, hee. He presses a note in her hand and tells her to read it — he’s thought long and hard, and he’s found the answer.
HA, it’s not a love note… he thinks he’s found a cure for the virus. Mo-yeon agrees with his research, but they don’t have the right medication on hand. Luckily Ja-ae already called Daniel and arranged for delivery, so it’s already on its way.
Myung-joo monitors her symptoms and calls her father, but he tries to stay positive and plays up her fifty percent chance of survival. She swears she’s going to fight this thing and live, but she asks him for two favors.
First, to forgive her for her threat to disown him if he didn’t let her be with Dae-young, which he easily grants. And second, if she doesn’t die, to let Dae-young stay in the army. She’d overheard their conversation, and she knows what her father demanded of him. She says that as much as her father worries about her, that’s how much she worries about Dae-young.
Mo-yeon enters the room to examine her, so Myung-joo hangs up the phone. But as she hangs up, she passes out. At the same time we see Daniel heading toward the base with the delivery of medicine, but he’s pulled over by a group of armed men. Oh no.
Mo-yeon determines that Myung-joo is experiencing the cytokine storm that she feared, and they put her in an ice bath to try to bring her fever down. They’re counting on Sang-hyun’s cure, but Mo-yeon gets a call that the truck carrying the cure and the vaccines has been stolen.
There’s not enough time for them to order another delivery, and they only have an hour to find the truck and get the medicines back. Argus calls Shi-jin, right on cue, and Shi-jin knows right away that he’s got the medicine. Argus wants to make a deal — the medicine for the diamonds.
Shi-jin meets with Argus’ man, readily handing over the diamonds for the keys to the truck. Daniel heads to the base with the meds, leaving the soldiers behind, but something about the lackey’s smirk infuriates Dae-young. He punches the guy right in his smug face and proceeds to beat the stuffing out of him.
Myung-joo is conscious again, but there’s a new problem — Fatima is taken under arrest for selling stolen medicine on the black market. Mo-yeon lies to the cops that Fatima didn’t steal those medicines, she gave them to her. But even if that were true, it’s still illegal to sell them on the black market.
Ki-bum helps Ye-hwa make an herbal concoction to bring down Myung-joo’s fever, but Daniel soon arrives with the medicine. Myung-joo and Young-soo are both given the cure, and Dae-young sits by Myung-joo while they wait for results. Finally her fever breaks, and he lifts her back to bed.
Shi-jin doesn’t hear about Fatima’s arrest until the next morning, and he’s instantly suspicious that it was even the Uruk police who arrested her. He rushes to town, but on the way he nearly hits Fatima, who’s standing in the road with her hands tied. He pulls over and runs to her, but a shot rings out and the girl collapses, hit in the leg.
Shi-jin’s instinct was right — it was Argus’s men who took Fatima, and now they have Mo-yeon as well. They bring her out to the road with a gun to her head, and Shi-jin quickly drops his own gun.
Argus arrives and plays the gentleman, wrapping Fatima’s bleeding leg and telling Shi-jin that it’s his turn to give the orders. Shi-jin asks what he wants, and Argus motions for Mo-yeon to be taken to his car.
Argus explains that the guns he’s selling will be delivered to North Uruk at midnight, after which he expects the U.S. soldiers to try to kill him. But he wants to live, so he tells Shi-jin to help him escape after the sale is made.
Furious, Shi-jin says (in Korean) that he will kill Argus with his own two hands. Argus doesn’t understand him, but he laughs in his face, gets in the car with Mo-yeon, and drives away.
Mo-yeon still has her walkie-talkie, and Shi-jin talks to her through it (still in Korean, so that Argus can’t listen) as she’s being taken away from him. He tells her that he will find her and save her, so she shouldn’t be afraid or cry. “Just wait for me. I’ll be there soon.”
Argus takes the walkie-talkie from Mo-yeon’s pocket, tells Shi-jin he’ll see him soon, and tosses it out the car window.
Shi-jin reports the situation to Lieutenant Park, who is predictably not pleased at the idea of staging a hostage rescue. He forbids Shi-jin to go anywhere, but Shi-jin says softly, with tear-filled eyes, that he’s going.
Lieutenant Park waves for Shi-jin to keep quiet while he answers a call from the Chief of Foreign Affairs, but when he says this isn’t exactly a hostage situation, Shi-jin interjects that it is. The Chief tells them to stand by while they get the details from the U.S. Army, but Shi-jin again interrupts to say they don’t have time.
The Chief tells Shi-jin that he won’t look the other way like he did with the Abu Dhabi prince — this is bigger than one possible death, it’s a national-level situation. Shi-jin goes frighteningly still, and says that if the nation is indifferent to a single person’s death, then that seems like the bigger problem. “I don’t know which nation you serve, but I will serve my nation.”
Shi-jin is fully prepared to drive through the gates to get out if he has to, but a soldier runs up to him with an emergency call from the commander of Special Forces, Myung-joo’s father. Without preamble, he tells Shi-jin that for the next three hours, he doesn’t know where he is. He’s not the captain of Team Alpha, or a member of the Korean Army.
Shi-jin takes a minute to call Dae-young, who tells him that Myung-joo is responding well to the medicine. He apologizes for not being able to say goodbye to Dae-young, which worries his friend for a moment, but Myung-joo stirs and he drops the call.
Shi-jin takes off his uniform, dressing in serviceable black. He buys a non-army-issue gun from the waitress in town, looking determined and ready for battle.
Argus takes Mo-yeon to an empty building and removes her gag, and when she tells him in Korean that she has no money if that’s what he’s here for, he pistol-whips her for not speaking English. He taunts her with comments about Shi-jin, mentioning how he sometimes disappears, is hard to contact, and that one day he’ll never come back.
He tells her that she should break up with Shi-jin now, and though tears are streaming down her face, she says calmly that those sorts of things should be said with an offer of money and a cup of water (for throwing in the person’s face, like in dramas, ha). She continues speaking in Korean, knowing it frustrates him, but Argus holds his temper.
Dae-young is worried now, since he can’t reach Shi-jin anymore. But he knows that whatever is happening, it’s bad — Shi-jin not only left his uniform behind, but also his dog tags, which they never take off except when they don’t want to be identified.
Shi-jin drives alone, and makes one more call, this time to the Abu Dhabi prince’s right-hand man. His request is simple: “Let me use your last card. I need a chopper. I have a date again.”
COMMENTS
That’s pretty freaking brilliant thinking on Shi-jin’s part, to use his favor for saving the prince’s life to save Mo-yeon’s in return. I knew that card would come in handy eventually, but it’s been long enough since we heard anything about it that I had forgotten it entirely. Well played Show — well played.
I’m still not sure if I really feel Argus as the Big Bad of the drama, and I can’t exactly put my finger on why. Maybe because it seems like he just tries too hard to be menacing (the character, not the actor, who I think is doing a pretty decent job with what he’s given). I think that if we’d been shown more of his past with Shi-jin, and how they used to be close, then the antagonism between the two men now would land a bit harder. Or maybe even if his betrayal had been more immediate — something he did to Shi-jin directly — then the reversal of Argus going rogue would feel more personal.
But the way things have played out, with Argus’s going turncoat happening offscreen and while he and Shi-jin were out of contact, just takes the punch out of the situation. We still don’t know when it happened, or why, we just know that he used to be a soldier and now he’s a smuggler. There’s nothing that happened to make it personal and immediate, so there’s no reason for us to see him as anything but the generic Bad Guy. Of course Shi-jin takes it personally, but he knows their history, while we still don’t. And I worry at this point that we never will, which is a shame, because it’s a setup that could have been mined for so much drama and angst for our hero. As it is, he’s feeling the angst, but we as the audience don’t really feel it with him.
But regardless of that one glitch, I loved all the small revelations in this episode, none of which were surprises to us as viewers but which were lovely to see play out for those involved. Most particularly Myung-joo and Dae-young’s relationship, since they seem to have finally gotten past any obstacles (real or emotional) and are finally admitting their true feelings for each other. Seeing Dae-young so helpless in the face of Myung-joo’s illness was heartbreaking, but also satisfying, since he’s the one who’s been fighting so hard to keep it all inside. I also enjoyed seeing Sang-hyun and Ja-ae finally come to an understanding, even if it’s still a reluctant one on her part. I don’t know why she’s so shy about admitting that she likes him, but she’s so adorable about it, and his happy smirks when he gets a tiny bit of anything from her are totally worth it. And lastly Chi-hoon’s redemption as a doctor, when he got to be the hero who saved a life rather than the one who made the mistake that cost one. I just hope he’s not infected, and gets to go home to his wife and child.
I completely agree with everything javabeans said last week about how good it was to have a medical case that finally impacts our main characters in a way that seems relevant and interesting. Not that previous events have been boring, but none of our main players were really in any danger during say, the earthquake or the Abu Dhabi prince’s surgery. Not in a real, direct way anyway — not in a way that made me fear for their actual lives. This virus scare, though, was something that felt immediate and terrifying, and I’m genuinely scared for the first time that not all of our doctors might make it out alive. I definitely hope that this is a sign that we can expect more of the same, because yes, now that you’ve shown us that you can tie the relationships and the events they’re dealing with together in a cohesive way, we’re going to expect more of the same from here on out. The show is still good without that, but with it, we could really see this thing go out with a bang. But not too much of a bang, because we want everyone to get home safely!

Thank you for the recap! I continue to love this drama as well, in spite of some of its flaws. There were so many great scenes in this ep., and some made me cry. Who knew Daddy Yoon could become such a softie, or at least, such an understanding man? I simply LOVED his conversation with his daughter, and being able to see how much he loves her, because that he does. And giving SJ three hours at the end of the ep., and covering for him, that was just gold.
I would like to mention this, before I forget: I really got irritated with MY in this ep. when she kept asking LCH why he was crying. She has really not been paying attention to him. A commenter mentioned in last week’s recaps section that as the leader, she should pay more attention to her team, and I agree. I know she has been busy with her romance, and with Fatima and the other children’s problems (them being sick), and the virus that is a threat, however I still wished she would try to know her team members well enough to start to see when something is off with them. Instead of letting it go, I wish MY had requested to see LCH privately, and talked to him, questioning him about his odd behavior recently: not picking calls from his wife to be, not going back to Korea when he could have, etc… That to me was not well handled at all.
Another issue I had was when LCH jumped to hold the patient without any protective gear. It would not take him more than a few mns to put one on. What was he thinking? And he got bitten, and he bled, right? Isn’t he supposed to get the virus that way? Why would a doctor do that?
Other than that, I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the conversation MJ and DY had. So touching... I had been wanting to see how all four leads cry, and I have to say, it looks organic when they do it. I also LOVED MY acting cute with SJ, and him simply not being able to take it. He is so adorable when he becomes like a little boy in front of her, just being putty in her hand. I love it. Btw, why did SJ said that he was holding out on holding MY’s hands, and on hugging her? I know she is very busy, but she is also not sick, so why couldn’t he hug her now? What did he mean, when he said that?
Can I also say how much I LOVE Dr. Song? He is a really cool guy. I loved that he knew that he was not going to die, and that though he was not feeling well, he helped in his own way, and was able to figure out a treatment to try and combat the virus. And his hugs with Nurse JA? Dr. Song has got moves, is all I will say. I loved his “you hugged me first!” and the fact that Nurse JA was outted, YAY!!!!! Now, if we could only have Nurse MJ end up with KKB at some point (I would take a time jump to make that happen), I would be very happy.

Hi Ivoire
I'm finally able to sit and write.
@Snickers gave this link for Lapses of Logic. These are from the first 2 episodes. By now there are of course lots more!!
https://www.dramafever.com/news/descendants-of-the-sun-k-drama-lols-lapses-of-logic-i-cant-believe-it/
The one lapse that I noted was that the surgical goggles have made an appearance, one episode too late! They did not say that they only just received them, so it's strange that they are now in use. However we know it was essential that they were not worn in Ep 10 so that Myung Ju would get infected and Dae Young finally gave in to his feelings and showed Myung Ju what she believed but still wanted to see ie how much he loves her. :D

And thank you for the link. I will have to look at it. I have a feeling it might help me understand some things, I sure hope so.

Hi again GB Unni,
Did you notice this? In episode 10 (I think) MY had a raymun date, but we didn't see SHK actually eat, only SJK. And in an earlier episode, when YSJ wanted to share his coffee with MY, she said no, because it would make her fat (the sugar in it). Not seeing SHK eat the raymun made me curious, that's all.

It is great, isn't it? And he deserves those accolades and success, having worked his way to them, and being genuinely humble. There is another one where they follow him going into the building, and people literally came out of their offices to see him. So heartwarming...

Hi again GB Unni,
I finally watched the video, thank you for posting it. It was quite interesting. Did you watch it? I had a problem because what the guy was saying did not match the scenes that were shown. So by the time I would see a scene, I would have to try and remember what he said about that scene, and that was challenging, because at the same time, I was trying to listen to, and understand what he was currently saying. I hope I'm making sense.
Thank you for mentioning the goggles, I had not noticed that. Now that you have said that, I will be paying attention when I rewatch the episodes. I agree though that the point you made about the goggles not being in episode 10 for YMJ to be infected is a valid point.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn’t it kinda rude to post your comment as a reply to a top comment just for visibility? I enjoy reading your posts, but I reckon it’ll be a lot more considerate of you to just start a new comment thread instead. I’m sure people would still see your comments and reply even if they were further down haha

+ 1. I know this show is not perfect, yet I continue to love the acting, the scenery, and most of the interactions between the characters. I also love the OST.
I have another question: is it just me of does SDY sometimes sound like he is speaking Saturi? I am not well versed in the Seoul accent, however when I listen to SDY (with headphones), I feel at times that he sounds different. Has anyone else felt that way? And tbh, YSJ gives me that impression at times too.

thanks for the recap lollypip!!
gripes first, and then stuff i enjoyed
uh well!! i'd just say that 1) the tape?? on her mouth looked rly loose and that sorta bothered me.. kinda... idk this is probably a very inane detail haha ignore that 2) onew's arc... idk i feel like that was so predictable and... unnecessarily tear-filled? you let an infected patient bite you in the midst of trying to keep him alive and now you feel like a real doctor because? is it because you might die now, bc you've risked your life to save someone? and minjae saying "ur like a real doctor now" because all those other times chi-hun saved people and treated people aren't enough to validate him as a doctor? am i just being extremely unsympathetic??? T___T anyway i can't wait for him to go back to korea and.. be in peace. poor kid.
onto the cute stuff! i absolutely enjoyed the heck out of that small joking part, where moyeon kept making shijin laugh with her jokes about blood type... when i gif-ed that moment, i kept staring at shijin's reactions (him realizing she's cracking a joke... best face) and they were so cute together. love the fluff. so. cute.
when shijin changed into all black, in my head i was just like "shit's going down man" and he got all serious lfskdf people've commented that shijin's all black clothing gives healer vibes, which... true.... but my mind my implode thinking about song joongki as healer so i'll stop right there.

I think Chi hoon story purpose is how to show mental break when volunteering in dangerous area. I noticed that since no one seems to have guilt conscience as bad as him . He represent young people who lived fairly well that need to understand that this volunteering need a strong mentality and you just can't go because you fairly competent in the city, you have to understand that situation change people.
About him become a doctor is when he overcome his own struggle to handle death, he is afraid to confront high risk patient since he doesn't believe his own judgment so that scene proved he actually know what to do, he even realize his recklessness when he asked the soldier to not enter even if it's late for himself. He is reckless but still no matter how people judge his ability he still can't let people die before his eyes. He is been questioning himself for a long time,
that's my observation

the thing is, i get that. like i get that he's inexperienced and young and full of self doubt and he's supposed to grow but i can't help but feel that it's overdone? like the cry-laughing part? something just feels off about that scene to me, but perhaps it's more of a personal problem i have with his character then

you feel it's overdone because this drama doesn't have any other PTSD or mental breakdown plot despite what happen to them, like all the doctor and the soldier are doing fine and we knew that's not all case that happen, esp if you connect it to real life situation.
all that plot shove up to his character arc since everybody seems fine and okay, I mean the drama show that he is in the only one that only crying and kinda disjointed the happy feel the overall drama has. they should share the plot sop it's not that he is the only one that abnormally suffering.
it kinda drag but if you count the minutes, it's not even long, it just a small part here and there and he is a supporting character, he just have small moment.
it feels long because they make it the same weeping scene since ep 6 and in his appearance up to ep 11, but hey he already happy in this episode, that mean they are done.

yeah, i suppose it's because of how singular his case is in the drama. at this point comparing him to other doctors make it seem like he has a weak mentality or something. perhaps better pacing would've done some wonders

I reckon Chi-hoon's storyline started out pretty well, representing PTSD and mental issues and all, but I was really unsatisfied with the way his plotline was resolved. Yeah, he risked his life to save a patient and yeah, he was forgiven by Min-jae, but it really felt like he only risked his life to prove to himself that he was a 'real doctor'. Also, running away to avoid getting crushed by a pile of rocks was the right thing to do (a doctor can't save people if he's dead goddamnit), and it just really annoys me that Min-jae never realised that Chi-hoon did the right thing by running.

If it's supposed to represent PTSD... PTSD isn't instantly, magically resolved.
I also can't imagine an experienced doctor saying "You’re a real doctor now"* as a response, like this was some sort of rite of passage where until a doctor puts him/herself in danger AND saves the patient s/he's not qualified????
*the only scenario where I can imagine these words would be some sort of long-running, inside joke and not one that would require putting your life at risk. More something along the lines of "You're not a real doctor until a patient has vomited on your only freshly laundered Dr coat".

I think the show missed an opportunity to have one of our three hunjs (preferably give Snoopy some more lines) to help Chi Hoon realize he did nothing wrong or different than what the tough and brave soldiers would have done in that particular situation.
The way they resolved it has a stupid message. His young wife should rake him over the coals. That was his only true cowardice in not reassuring her, no matter how he was feeling. Talk about a stressful pregnancy.

That's exactly what I'm saying! Why is Chi-Hoon being chastised for leaving Minjae when he could have been added to the fatalities? Moreover, he did not abandoned Minjae totally. He told the soldiers where he was. I find this arc forced.

And let's not forget that his hand was injured as well from the initial attempts to help Min Jae. I really hated that entire story arc. He did what he was supposed to - he found a survivor, tried to help, got out when it became to dangerous, and reported on where the survivor could be found so that the professionals could go in and do it. Just hated it every time this came back into play.

About this, "but my mind might implode thinking about song joongki as healer so i’ll stop right there." Funny comment. Are you a Healer fan?
Do you have a link (please) of where your gif is posted? If so, could you post it here (so we could see it?) please? I really loved that joke scene as well. YSJ looked like such a child (in a very cute way), the way he kept saying, "do one more, and one more..." And MY was very cute as well, I might add. And when YSJ said, "I lost, I lost," and he looked away, I think I died from how cute YSJ and SJK looked. No wonder women love this guy. How could you not? (Please don't answer that. I know he can't possibly be loved by every single person, but I am sure most people get my point).
And also, YSJ is soooo HOT in all black, with that cap on. I remember saying in last week's recaps that Asparagus was just asking to be killed. And so yes, YSJ looked like "S**t was going down." Why would anyone mess with his girl? Not very wise. I also think that he might have tried all he could because she was a Korean citizen as well.
Another point: am I the only one who has noticed that Fatima has been wearing the same red dress? There were no one on the base (close to her size), who could lend her another outfit? Just wondering...

This isn't my favorite episode ever. Seems too contrived and just drama on top of drama on top of drama. On the contrary, to me it doesn't have the emotional impact of the earthquake. The virus doesn't seem like that big of a threat and only done to make DY realize he loves MJ and for Gen. Daddy to stop being a meddling father. From the start it was obvious she won't die, so I wasn't as moved as I probably should have been. I did like the conversation with her father though, and her father allowing SJ to go at the end.
That being said, it wasn't bad and I really loved the end and SJ going against his duty to save MY. I've seen some people say she was too naive in going with the cops, but she's kept in the dark about everything. If anything I think the area should have been secure (which is the army's job), especially after Argus came busting in and everyone warned not trust the police here.
I also think Argus doesn't matter, but SJ's feelings of him just show how much he respects his fellow soliders and the bound they share. For Argus to betray everyone is more about SJ's feeling than anything about Argus, who is basically a stereotypical villain with no other motivation but being evil.
And I'd really really want to talk about the next episode lol. I'll wait though.

i feel you on the security around the base... i mean, wouldn't they have learned that the police were bought/on argus's side already by the fact that the u/n guy they sent to the police showed up in the cafeteria? or are we assuming that the soldiers just didn't connect the dots and that only shijin remembers the urk police are shady?

I think it because MY is not a suspect, just a witness and the local police has more authorities since the case is local, no one in the base know that the police work with Argus,
and not everyone know Argus, like how evil he is,
the scene should me more informative but that's the impression I get

So I'm trying to understand the backstory. YSJ saved Argus at one point, and because of the time/stall to rescue him, as an accidental effect, his commanding officer got killed in the process. Of course, YSJ feels that Argus should stay as the good guy, if the collateral damage was his leader. But he sees him in Uruk, and now he's the bad guy selling guns....but we still don't feel that much connection between them. It would have been nice if, at their first meeting, he tells him about this or how this is betrayal to his act of saving him in the past. Even throughout their meetings, this should have been brought up. I think that's how I wish it played out.

Something like that. There isn't a lot of connection between them, and it seems by choice? I feel it's more about his beloved commander than really liking Argus all that much. Argus life was saved at the expense of someone SJ really cared about and to see how he turned out makes it obvious his commander died in for no reason. Saved a bad guy who sells children and hits women.

The dramabeans recap chick missed some key thematic elements about Argus. That combined with the blanket of rah rah pro-military patriotism endemic post 9-11 also makes it hard for ppl to understand the reason for a "good guy" like a special ops soldier to go bad. But this happens ALL THE TIME. Think all those Blackwater guys killing civilians in Iraq, or Iran Contra, Air America etc
With Argus 김은숙 is making the same point as the substory of Dae-Young going into private security at the behest of Myeong Joo's father. He says plainly there's only a couple places that ex-soldiers end up... Argus himself says that eventually black ops/regime change/neocon nonsense ends in one way for a soldier: a body bag, and a GF left alone.
DOTS ponders the question of how even a superman in the military deals with "regular life" and if it's even possible. Argus is a foil for YSJ... not because it was necessary for some traumatic thing to turn him but EXACTLY because what Argus is, is the natural flip side of what YSJ could become without the love of a good woman to ground him etc.
It's not really a historical thing that binds YSJ and Argus but thematic. They barely knew one another

Yes, SYJ just dislikes Argus on principle of a soldier gone bad. My only real complaint about Argus was the way they handled the whole CIA using Argus thing. I would have preferred either we see Argus running a truly powerful arms organization (one small gun truck and collecting diamonds in dank buildings is not a convincing picture) so I'd believe he could be an effective part of CIA plans OR that or that they just made him a CIA agent.

Oh yes, I agree! What really bothered me is all the loopholes in the plot that were so huge that you could probably drive through it with a plane. Facepalms would not even suffice anymore to express my frustration at such poorly researched medical writing. Drama or not, this is just lazy writing. These are things you could find out or confirm with just a google search so there is really no excuse here.
Using antibiotics to treat a viral infection?????!!!! WHY?!! Antibiotics are for bacteria not virus - they will never work for viruses. What you are looking for is more likely to be antivirals. This has to be a product placement. There are so many ways you could justify this move that is more medically sound: the virus lowers immunity so the antibiotics help fight of bacteria which more frequently kill patients. This would be believable than having me believe that antibiotics would get rid of a virus.
Plus, the whole Jin guy who was affected by the blackout; they said he was on the ventilator but he was not!! No tubes helping him to breathe or whatsoever. He had only an oxygen mask on. Also the Chihoon CPR scene, for someone who has weak breathing, you DO NOT give CPR! You incubate him, put him back on the ventilator he was not even on in the first place. DUDE. If Chihoon was not a doctor before, this scene hardly makes him one. It is as if CPR is the magic for everything, the panacea. If his heart is still beating, you don't do a CPR for goodness sake. Like one of the commentators mentioned, risking your life like that doesn't make you any more or any less of a doctor. It is neither wise nor heroic. Yes what he did was good but it was also dangerous and foolish for someone who is about to be a dad and for a doctor. I understand the point of redemption but I cringe that this was used to prove that he was a doctor for doing that.
With that said, the writing is still the strongest when it is about relationships and characters. Like the split screen between Moyeon and Shi Jin as commanders of their respective field and the nice lovely moment they shared when Moyeon made jokes and teased him. Daeyoung and Myung Jo shared lovely scenes together too. Song doctor and Ha Nurse are my favourite. They are so freaking cute together. I like who cool Song doctor is in a quiet and dandy way.
There were so many distracting bad writing in this episode that it really affected my enjoyment of the show. I have to say that this episode and the next is the weakest of the drama and I am so disappointed by these two episdoes. But like lemondooodle, I'll wait to discuss the next episode. :D

Also, I am not sure it is a good idea to touch those diamonds that were in the stomach of someone who had M3 virus. Virus can't be washed out or sterilized so easily.
The rough army handling patient zero and forcibly drawing blood from him would probably have more political and democratic implication than an unauthorized black ops to save a hostage.

Dont get me wrong, i love love love love this drama to bits, especially SJY-MY teasing and trying to make each other happy despite their difficult situation, and no dramas are perfect, but i just hope the script writer pay a lil bit more attention to this part, especially when it comes to the one of the major conflicts in the drama----finding cure for the life-threatening virus-- but other than that, i'm extremely satisfied and grinning most of the time when i lay my eyes on SJY haha

I am not crazy about Asparagus/McInnis either, however the show seems to need a villain, so I am OK with him. We know this show is not perfect. I have a question: are the words “Chief” and “Temperature” similar in Korean? I am asking because the first draft of subs on Viki had “Is the Blue House of Department of Temperature a joke to you, huh?” And today, it was changed to “is the Chief of the Blue House a joke to you, huh?” That was the scene where SJ makes a fist with his hand, as the Chief of the Blue House asks him that.

@ lemondoodle,
Thank you for your answer. I appreciate it, though that was not my question. I have been a subscriber at Viki's for two years now and I have noticed the differences between the first draft and the final one. I also sometimes check to see how their subbing in French is, and find that I might have said it a little differently (the French subbers translate from the English subs it seems, except for the formal and informal pronouns, which French has, but English doesn't). So the way they go about translating is also something I'm very curious about, and find interesting.
I have noticed that at times, the subbers would explain that a word sounds like another korean word. Like how "apple" and "apology" sound the same, I think. So writers can play with that (they did that in boys over flowers, for example, with the apple/apology. And I think they did it in Personal Taste as well).
So I would assume that a department of temperature would not exist, though I know I could be wrong. What I was curious about was what might have made the subber write "temperature" which had to be changed to something very different. I do not know Korean well, I was just curious about the thought process that might gone into that, and wanted to see if anyone here had some thoughts on that. That's all.

I posted upstream but what DB missed entirely is the fact that Argus is YSJ's foil. He's where YSJ ends up without all his "shields" of his jokes, his love for KMY and his principled motivation of believing that his PATRIOTISM isn't some vague political thing but the practical thing of loving every member of the Korean race and each day protecting them.
Black ops is the natural flip side of Special ops. These guys are basically political assassins. That's why guys like Patton and most of the genius generals of the past LOATHED special operators as corrupt, bureaucratic, private armies within the Army. Most of these guys go into private contracting or CIA... running guns or being mercs.
It's not necessary for something amazing to have happened to turn Argus. Argus WAS Shi Jin, but he didn't have what Shi Jin had and naturally let his morals slide little by little as he did the job.
Again as I posted, you see the same thing trying to happen to Dae Young. Being a SOLDIER doesn't make enough money, have enough power or prestige for him to "deserve" Myeong Joo, so her own father wants him to give it up and go into something more lucrative... basically become one of those goons you see on dramas in dark suits beating ppl up for "the Chairman" in some warehouse.
It's an entire statement the producer and screenwriters are saying about this glamorous thing these soldiers do, that maybe makes them unfit for society. The fact they cannot have relationships is one aspect of it but just a smaller piece of the wider issue

I don't know if you're a sci-fi fan or familiar with Firefly, but a similar situation existed with the movie that finished off the cancelled-too-soon series. All of us fans were outraged that we were never told the background of the mysterious Rev. Book. My son said to me - he WAS the Operative (big bad) in his past live (meaning, before Book became one of the good guys, having been an assassin/agent for the government explained all the mysterious things about him that happened in the series).

Okay I love this ep, and it broke me to tears when chi hoon in the middle of his crying and calling his wife.
I think it more of a personal experience. There's those moment when you think you are at the lowest phase in your entire life and you can't contact any of your friend & family cause you are not what you usually are or what they knew about you. And just like chi hoon, I am a very happy person in front of a lot people that knew me.
Then to the fun part
1) So chi hoon is richer than the hospital director?? I mean his family, they own the building, damn!! He is one of capable chaebol in a dramaland
2) asparagus said the line that I want to said to song jong ki in person
"I am gonna learn Korean just for you"
3) so the arm deal in the bar, repeat at the bar and the gold card from UEA supposedly with that halpinh scene do have meaning after all
Then idk if Asparagus actes good or just enough but his lines really get me, all the things he say is either funny or hatefull but I like the words he uses. It fascinatede just because a language chages can impact that much, so the korean language may have diff feeling too in I fully understand the conversational language in SK.

Anyway, ChiHoon's mother is probably the only chaebol mother who actually likes her daughter-in-law. a rarity in Kdrama.
And why is Argus so concerned with MoYeon's lovelife? If I didn't know any better, I'd say he's got a crush on her...or maybe Shijin?
But seriously though, the show is getting kind of ridiculous for me. I'm still going to finish it though but I'm no longer expecting anything big.

Shi Jin's English is fine. It's not perfect but it's conversational, he's not got every inflection down but he's got most of them, and the only bits that really trip me up are things like "get out of my face" - but that's totally understandable. It's hard enough translating yourself into another language without also translating threats and idioms (which have entirely different constructions).
I see "don't appear before me" as an early translation for the Korean equivalent for "get out of my face", which would be nuts said in English. So... I'll go with what I can get.
To be honest, the Valley Girl playing Fatima is more distracting to me than anyone else. She's so clearly American and her acting interprets the character as a sassy teenage American in a way that's very jarring. But again: a South Korean director isn't likely to pick up that nuance exactly.
I've mentioned this before, but there's a scene in "King 2 Hearts" (or whatever that one's translated as) where a military guy marches in and while he looks the part, he promptly gives off a few physical and speech cues that are stereotypically considered homosexual - basically, the exact sort of mannerisms that would have been modified by someone in the army. But that is such a deep layer of cultural awareness that there's no way anyone would realize that while the actor looked the part, his mannerisms would quickly draw skeptical attention.
SJK is doing really well, overall. All of the non-native people speaking English are, really. And while Argus is a ham, my only real gripe against him is that he apparently doesn't know the "we're in the money" song. Why would you sing that if you don't know the tune?!!?

I thought the hard feelings SJ had with Asparagus stemmed from the fact that he lost a close friend while the group was trying to save the Asparagus friend. No?

I think you just said what I had been thinking and analyzing about Argus. "I’m still not sure if I really feel Argus as the Big Bad of the drama, and I can’t exactly put my finger on why. Maybe because it seems like he just tries too hard to be menacing." I really felt like he was the weak spot of the whole conflict in Uruk. I'll give my thoughts more on this on Ep12 when you've written it (so as not to show spoilers) but I really feel that the threat he presents isn't that....scary? like, it's not something that YSJ or team Alpha can't overcome. Yes, he's the bad guy, but he doesn't feel as menacing as he should be.

Not sure if it's just me, but I rolled my eyes a fair bit this episode... I mean I do still love it and all, but some parts just nag at me.
Things I liked:
- When DY and MJ did the "I miss you" exchange (Hello, onions. No I wasn't crying).
- When MJ called her father (I almost bawled my eyes out)
- Chi Hoon's closure and how he FINALLY called his pregnant wife and he was so happy and crying and I felt happy for him like AT LAST!
- MY's punny jokes with SJ (SO CUTE.)
- I had totally forgotten all about the card!! Kudos for using that as a way to get MY out.
Things that didn't quite go down well with me:
- There are a bunch of trained sentries in front of the Medicube and nobody thinks to stop a bunch of "policemen" who are dragging away a 15 year old girl that their captain supposedly saved from bad guys who are trying to kidnap her at every turn
- I know people say that well, perhaps nobody knows the police are corrupt, but I have to wonder why exactly the captain wouldn't let his men know about the dangers of the "policemen", and who to trust and who not to, especially in the dangerous period where Argus is trying to get to Youngsoo and there's the medicines and epidemic to deal with. Like... I don't get it. Is it just me? Why is it always a female doctor with 0 fighting skills who has to deal with the bad guys? (Or otherwise there would be no more story I guess lol).
- I can't figure out what's Argus's deal, but every scene with him makes me grimace.
I normally love every episode of DotS so far... and I heard this episode hit the highest ratings... but there were more -grimace and rolls eyes- scenes in this episode than I've ever had in other episodes.
Not due to the acting though. I loved the way they acted and brought out the emotions in full blow.

Oh no please do not let Dr Chi Hoon (Onew) die after all he went through.
I know sometimes the actor who has a tragic end evokes the most heartfelt emotions n steals the show but please do not let this happen to Onew (my favourite member of Shinee). Praying even more fervently now.

Wait a second. What if Argus isn't the "bad guy." What if, and I am going on a limb here, the actual bad guy is our inner turmoil and emotions? Man vs. self. Maybe Argus is just a red herring? I don't know. I can't watch episode 12 until tomorrow afternoon so I could be wrong by then. But what if?

I don't think Argus is really that important other than in relation to what comrades mean to SJ.

I think it's deeper than that.
Everything that Argus does, goes against all SJ's values of what a soldier's duty is supposed to be (as remarked to MY pre-Urk).
And to the point where people closer to SJ get threatened by Argus... it's not only like a betrayal (which I guess was already expressed in ep 5), it's also reflecting an increasing loss of SJ's ideals on patriotism and friendship.

That's also true, but Argus as a person/character is not particularly important. What he represents is and how his behavior is again everything everything SJ stands for is, but there's a reason he's basically just evil dude being really evil.

I have a different perspective on Argus. I do not think he is as well written as he could have been, and I wish he would have been better fleshed out, with more of a background story. He reminds of the bad guy in TK2HS, who represented what some very powerful organizations are and can do to countries, because of their wealth and power.
Argus to me represents those organizations and companies that go to politically unstable countries, and are there solely to make a profit, and benefit from the social and political climate at hand. Some wars are sometimes instigated, with the goal of then calling on certain organizations to come and "help" rebuild the country. They get to make a lot of money that way, and they could be there for a while. That theme was introduced and discussed in the kdrama Three Days.
Now those organizations might not be involved in human trafficking, and prostituting children, however the main thing is that their main goal is that the political and social climate benefit them, and not really how they can help the country and its people. In that sense, Argus is the same: he is in Urk for his own benefit and profit, not to help the country or its people, and he wanted some cheap access to some of Urk's natural resources, which was what the diamonds represented to me.

My problem with Argus is that someone told him to act like a slimy evil bad guy in a k-drama rather than a menacing arms dealer/diamond smuggler in a war torn lawless country. Then they fed him some of the worst lines of dialogue and tha'ts our bad guy. Of course he will never defeat our heros!
I don't think there is any friendly past between Argus and Shijin--only the death of a good comrade while saving his worthless ass.
BTW where did the perfect cut diamonds come from?

Hello All!
just dropped by to say that it really took me a long time to start this drama; and it really wasnt until Ep5 that i was really feeling it. I kept at it because what drew me was the equation between shi jin & dae young, the love between dae young and myung joo and the way the writers and makers have kept this show light, despite its rather grim setting.
This show is quite different from others in its genre - they tend to be on a grand scale e.g. single handedly save a nation, save the world from an evil villain etc -if you know what i mean. This one, on the other hand, seems to be a simple story about regular people trying to do their best for their corner of the world. I'm liking that.
I'm at Ep 7 now. Hope to be all caught up and join the conversation with you all next week. Have a good week everyone!

I was bored watching episode 11 and 12. I understand that in a dramaverse there needs to be constant tension and action so the story is moving forward at an engaging pace, but it's bugging me that the story right now has a feel of being draggy. As if scenes are on for too long. I mean DOTS has never been subtle with its jingoist themes but it was particularly heavy handed on ep 11 and 12. Even the lovey-dovey scenes didn't have the same impact as previous episodes since I already know what's at stake between our two couple so having an epidemic and an opportunistic gun runner to create conflict was overblown. Too many tragedies in too small a time frame does not make for fun dramatic tension unless it's Macbeth and everyone dies in the end.
To me, what sticks out about the first few episodes were the moments that allowed our leads to be more than caricatures of their characters. Dr. Kang slowly understanding and accepting to love a man who is dangerous. Yoo Captain's earnest portrayal of a man capable of loving both Dr.Kang and country.
Maybe I'm taking this drama too seriously. Or any drama too seriously, really.

I was actually hoping that Argus and KangMoYeon have a sort of history. Not intimate but some like Kang Mo Yeon being dispatched to a war as a doctor, where they would meet since it looked like she knows about gunshot wounds (refer to ep. 1). From there we would learn how she's not just all about beauty (the drama has not yet shown for me that she's a skilled doctor, IMO), and that Capt. Shi Jin didnt just fall for her beauty.
But anyway, the drama is still something to look for but somehow the following events would start to be predictable.

We've learned over and over again that MY is not just a beauty. And why SJ loves her is pretty obviously not just her face. And I completely disagree that she's never shown she's a skilled doctor.

This episode was good but just not one of my faves as I felt like there was just too much happening to drive storylines. Still, I enjoyed watching MJ-DY finally talking about their feelings (I teared up during their walkie-talkie scene!), the hug between Dr. Song and Nurse Ha (lol these two!), The "blood type" banter of MY-SJ and lastly, when SJ confronted his superiors and went rogue! Oh and I love how MJ's dad was also badass in this!! And as someone said upthread, SJ went all Healer on us! Brings back (fond) memories! Haha!
Can't wait for the ep12 recap!!!!!!!!!!!! <3

I completely agree in terms of Argus and him not being villainy enough. Something seemed off for me as well and I couldn't get behind all of this. It just seems ridiculous somehow. And I do think it's because of the writing - he's always there just to create tension and create a reason for Shi Jin to be heroic again. I don't mind him being heroic but I would just like it to be more .. I don't know.. organic?

Thanks for the recap.
I liked today's episode cause of GooWon Couple(it was centered around them, and maybe it would be the last episode to center around their story)
I agree, the whole virus thing does seem like an event to open up DY but I ain't complaining.
But I'm also thankful to the writers for closing the virus chapter in this episode itself and not dragging this plot to death for another 2 episodes.
Looking forward to the next recap and all the interesting condos in the comment section. ^^

I also feel the most important aspect of the drama is the romance. That is also what i am anticipating. But i feel episode 11 and 12 have not continued on the strength of the previous episodes. I still want to see their conflicts collide and their relationship develop and get deeper....and develop...and get more deeper.
So I am hoping to see the build up with the same strength and intensity as in the previous episodes. This I say for the main couple. The second couple has a very nice story and I wouldnt mind more development there but my focus remains on the main couple.
Question: 1. Why did SJ want to MY's blood type??

as usual, this episode was good.
and i think kang moo yeon has done everything she should have done with lee chi hoon's problem. I mean she did try find him but failed (that guy is hiding himself from everyone and moo yeon is not some kind of detective or police, even detective would find it hard to look for a guy who is purposely hiding himself)
and lee chi hoon also said that he doesn't want any help from anyone and he will solve his own problem when Doctor Sang Hyun offer his help.
and FYI Kang Moo Yeon is a doctor and a leader but she is not GOD.
