Yoon Shi-yoon eyes JTBC fantasy sageuk as comeback drama
by javabeans
Freshly discharged from military service, Yoon Shi-yoon is looking at new projects, and may be heading to JTBC for a fusion fantasy romance sageuk drama, which would be his first foray into sageuk waters. Yay!
It sounds like an interesting project, too: The title roughly translates to Mirror of the Witch (Manyeo Bogam), but requires a bit of explanation. The drama will be taking a fantasy-fusion turn on the youth and love of famed Joseon royal physician Heo Jun, who wrote the book Mirror of Eastern Medicine (Dongui Bogam). So… there’ll be medicine, but also maybe some witchery and spells and not-strictly-scientific happenings going on, I’m guessing?
That’s the extent of the description right now, but I’ve seen mention of shamans and spiritual guides in the background cast; perhaps it’s Heo Jun by way of The Moon That Embraces the Sun? Directing is PD Jo Hyun-tak of JTBC’s period drama Maids and tvN’s ghost-melo-romance Who Are You, so we can rest assured he’ll have the style well in hand. (I’m not finding much information about writer Yang Hyuk-moon, so he’s a bigger question mark.)
Yoon Shi-yoon’s management confirmed that he has received the offer, though he is also considering other projects and has yet to make a decision. His last project was 2014’s lackluster rom-com Prime Minister and I, so I’m sure he’ll want to take his time choosing the right vehicle, and he was only released on January 27. I can’t deny I’d love to see him back onscreen sooner rather than later, though; I love his bright energy and endearing charm (Flower Boy Next Door, Me Too Flower, Baker King Kim Tak-gu) and he’s got enough versatility that I could readily see him in a sageuk.
Mirror of the Witch is being considered for the Friday-Saturday slot following Ms. Temper and Nam Jung-ki, which is the rom-com to follow currently airing Madam Antoine.

I hope he takes his time and doesn't feel to much pressure to jump right back into work. I do love this director, though. He also did jtbc's Beloved, which I love. If they work together I hope they give us something great!

T.T Wow time really goes by fast. I can't believe it. I'm so glad he's back!! He'll forever be a favorite because of Baker. Although personally I wish it wasn't a sageuk, I'm sure it will be great if he takes it!

I have a panda hat/hood (with attached gloves) that I wear when it's cold. (My husband teases me that I look like a grade schooler, but it keeps my ears warm.) My daughter, in China, bought it for her sister (who said it's too babyish to wear.)
Long explanation, sorry. But every time I wear it I think of "Flower Boy Next Door." I wish for a GOOD comeback vehicle for him. (And I like Sageuks, when they're done well.)

YES! A million times YES! I mean I will watch anything with YSY in it. He is one of my first Kdrama loves and I am dying to see him back on my screen and hotly kissing some lucky girl. But I'm extra excited to see him branch out into a sageuk. I know he can do it because he is AWESOME! Yeah!

This doesn't actually sound good to me. It sounds like a hot mess. I hope YSY passes on it and gets something solid. Something on tvN, co-starring Kim Seul-gi. This will make the show leads the perkiest possible couple on TV. For the second leads, they need to cast the most dour couple they can scrape up.
???
Wacky hijinks ensue.

TvN, yes! He deserves a good project.
Love Kim Suel Gi. Though, I've read that he wants to do something with Kim Sun Ah.

I so dislike sageuks!! Is it like Shakespeare here in the US or something? Proves an actor's acting chops or soeming?
I'm always so bummed when and actor I really like is gonna do a sageuk...cause no matter how hard I try I cannot watch them!!

Theoretically the genre should be significantly more challenging than a modern-day drama...and I guess maybe that holds if we compare modern "sageuk" to modern trendies/melos (considering almost all of these genres are in decay and they at least try to be about something other than OTPness)...but generally speaking, Shakespearean level sageuk are very thin on the ground these days. If an actor wanted to prove something with a sageuk, they'd need to find an old school one first.

You should try fantasy sageuk first or short series/drama specials, like Splish Splash Love, Hyang Dan's Story or 16-20eps like Arang, Gu Family Book. Something light and not very 'heavy' sageuk.

I'd say sageuks as a genre are very demanding in terms of correct speech and intonations, mannerisms etc so yeah, a bit like Shakespeare or Western period dramas that way - actors who pull it off get respect.
If you're going to ever try a sageuk, try something like Three Musketeers (2014 adaptation of the Dumas novel) or Queen In-hyun's Man, which is only half a sageuk since it's mostly set in the present day.
Avoid Gu Family Book at all costs, the fantasy aspect is a joke and the effects are terrible plus surprise sexual violence is a (not) bonus that no one needs in their lives.

Yeah, I guess you can compare it to Shakespeare or Jane Austen or any kind of historical/period piece. Like those, it can be challenging for an actor to play a sageuk role convincingly, but it's not for everyone. Some people like melos, some like family dramas, some like trendies, some lke sageuk. Different folks, different strokes and all that.

Well the olot can sound like a hot mess on paper but if the writer is capable it can be a gem. This writer might have not written much but they can be a dark horse. Not really a fan of YSY but PD is solid, I'm always in for a good TV

Although, I can't wait for YSY to confirm his next project. I really don't mind he takes some time to really reviews the offers since its his first drama back. I feel anxious for him and really hope it will be an awesome drama. Fighting!
