Sunlit stills from the set of Scarlet Heart: Goryeo

We’re still waiting on an airdate for the anticipated fantasy-romance remake (of Chinese Bu Bu Jing Xin) drama Scarlet Heart: Goryeo, but we are at least starting to get glimpses of the ongoing shoots, however brief they may be. I suppose I’ll take the trickle over no trickle, though I can’t help but feeling greedy for more.

These shots are certainly very pretty, as you would expect of a show directed by PD Kim Kyu-tae (It’s Okay, It’s Love and That Winter, the Wind Blows) and starring Lee Jun-ki (Scholar Who Walks the Night) and IU (The Producers). One of these days, Lee Jun-ki will film a good sageuk again, right? Right? That thought is what keeps me coming back time after time, even if I’ve been more disappointed (Scholar, Joseon Gunman) than not (Arang and the Magistrate). But hope keeps us all alive.

He plays Goryeo prince Wang So, who falls in love with the 21st-century woman who travels to his time, played by IU. He’s certainly not the only one, since the drama features a whole host of young princes to get tangled in the love… rectangle? Hexagon? Octagon? There are just a lot of princes, to be played by Kang Haneul (Misaeng), Hong Jong-hyun (Mama), Baekhyun (of EXO fame), Nam Joo-hyuk (Cheese in the Trap), Ji-soo (Sassy Go Go), Kim San-ho (Rude Miss Young-ae), and Yoon Sun-woo (Devoted Min Deul-le). You can refer to this previous post to confirm character descriptions for the various princes.

We also have individual stills featuring Kang Haneul as eighth prince Wang Wook; I expect we’ll be seeing the spotlight fall on each of the princes in turn. With that many of them, the pre-show promo cycle could take a while, but with the premiere still a ways off, we’ll have time to fill.

So far, all that’s been specified is that Scarlet Heart: Goryeo intends to air in the latter half of the year.

"Prior to her debut, LOEN coined her stage name "IU", deriving from the phrase "I and You" to symbolize the unifying force of music between people." (Wikipedia) Real name: Lee Ji-eun.

I find IU extremely interesting in the way that she has truly, completely owned her stage-name. There are so many kpop idols with stage names, but often, non-official sources (like the fans, general public as opposed to the media) would prefer using their real names as a sort of gesture of closeness. Like the EXO boys, Suho, D.O. etc., have to regularly remind their fans to refer to them by their stage names when they're being interviewed at fansigns. But, apart from entertainment industry insider and friends, rarely have I heard someone, even fans, refer to IU as Jieun. It's fascinating. She's definitely a force to be reckoned with. I love her music and her acting.

While IU looks good in her styling. I just want to snip that awful, side bang off Lee Jun Ki's head. Already LJK seems miscast in the role, now with the hair, no. He looks like he is channeling the cute body guard from Moon Embracing the Sun, not the stately, reserved, but calculative 4th prince.

This drama is already raising so many flags. This is Goryeo, they have a bit of leeway with the costumes - so why, why the cheap looking outfits. Yes, they can't outfit everyone in silk, but they can at least spring for Satin, which will look better than the cheap, synthetic, polyester, material that we see in the above stills.

Drama team, you have a huge budget, for a drama with not that much battle scenes, or need for CGI, please use it on your costumes and set.

If anything we know this will be a VERY lovely drama to look at! Im keeping my fingers crossed that it will be as good as it looks. I'm very partial to time slip dramas and haven't come across any that really hit the spot (apart from queen in-hyun's man and splish splash love). Also really looking forward to seeing Nam Joo Hyuk after his turn as Euntaek in Cheese, and Ji Soo! Will you finally have the chance to play a character not riddled with angst? One can only hope.

Has IU done sageuk before? I've only seen her in Producers and liked her there, so am looking forward to seeing here.

Kang Haneul seems to have quite a versatile face - he quite fits the sageuk aesthetic here and i noticed that he also really looked the part in his other period film set in the mid-20th century.

Totally agree about Kang Haneul's face. He has that kind of look to him that would fit in anywhere given the right clothes and hair.

I'm not sure this is the right hair, though...imo he'd look better with the classic topknot, the fringe looks a bit fussy, which is really at odds with his face.

I just hate fringes for sageuks (and Chinese period dramas). They look so so tacky. The ones for Shine and Go Crazy were so eeww that I didn't even bother to watch the drama.

The wigs in SoGC were terrible eps on Prince Wang Wook (Lim Ju-Hwan's character). You don't see those kind of hair do in the more traditional sageuks.
It was a bloody era to be looking all clean and pretty.

0

Dunno...you're probably right, but Lee Min Ho rocked his fringe in Faith.

0

IU's never done sageuk before, but since the heroine is a 21st-century girl, it may not matter if her sageuk pronunciation is less than perfect.

I agree about Kang Haneul - he has a very classically chiselled face that looks at home in any era in a way that many of the flower boys of today often don't.

Not that flower-boy-ness itself is any bar to being a good sageuk actor - I mean, look at the lead of this very drama. But the lack of cosmetic tweaks also has a lot to do with it.

actually BBJX, the original has nothing to do with all the time travel played, there's no explanation beside her soul that travel to her ancestor thousand years before,
despite that, her character really knew how to behave, what to said to get her out of trouble, she has the knowledge and what differentiate is her broad mind in society than people in that era

This writer has never done a sageuk before so that doesn't help. It'll be very pretty to look at from the cast to their world. I was hoping that oppa would decline this. He can do sageuk no doubt but this adaptation doesn't feel right and the character that he is playing etc.
I'm not sure if they are going all fantasy with this or dark like the original and Goryeo's history.

Kang Ha Neul has a more princely aura than Lee Jun Ki. How is Jun Ki to play the 4th Prince? Jun Ki looks good but wrong. The whole getup makes him look more like the prince's bodyguard or sidekick than anything else. Amazingly, he also looks younger than KHN.

Could this version be BBJX sans the politics and dark stuff? Pretty, fluffy and love octagons. That actually explains the casting choices.

I'm curious as to why the Princes are expected to exude a princely aura. It's not like the Princes were born into a royal family which has existed for several generations and where royal customs and traditions have been clearly established and entrenched.

This drama is set during the founding of Goryeo. The princes' grandfather was a merchant, their father who likely started off as a merchant (family business), followed by service as a military commander, a general and subsequently prime minister who overthrew the king and became the founding king of the Goryeo dynasty. Another 20 years of war followed to unify the 3 Kingdoms.

Some of the princes (especially the older ones) were not born as princes by rather as sons of a military commander or general. The older princes were involved in battles & military campaigns against Baekjae and Silla, and probably did not have time for princely or courtly matters, but spent more time on horseback than attending court sessions or royal tutoring sessions.

It is likely that the younger princes born after or towards the end of unification who had the benefit of being brought up as royal princes who will exude the princely and courtly manners & behavior.

For the benefit of the audience, the actor playing the role of a prince should exude a princely aura. He could naturally look the part and/or have the aid from costume and styling. The ability to act and carry himself as a prince is of course just or more important. In reality, I am sure there were princes who didn't look like royalty whether their royal family existed for generations or if they were new.

Truth be told, I didn't find Nicky Wu princely in looks at all. However, the styling for him and all the princes was good. More importantly, the actors were able to exude the aura of princes even though their characters varied from frivolous to serious. What Nicky Wu lacked in looks, he made it up with his acting. He was convincing as the serious, aloof and ambitious prince.

In the case of Lee Jun Ki, I think this particular styling is unfortunate. I do not know if it's his hair or the fact that he looks pretty. I was taken aback by the contrast between Kang Ha Neul and Lee Jun Ki. If I didn't know and had to guess, I would have thought KHN is the 4th Prince and LJK the 13th or 14th. In one picture elsewhere, LJK even looked like he was wearing eyeliner. I wonder if he chose to do it or they thought he looked good with eyeliner. I hope it's not true because eyeliner has no place in dramas unless it's some showcase for kpop.

It is assumed that Kwang Soo was a great military and something ruthless, it was called the warrior wolf or something. Obviously, its appearance is not that of a prince.

I think it's best to forget BBJX and see this as a wholly new story.

0

LJK's first shot was taken from Gosa:Gosa is a traditional Korean ritual with shamanic roots. The ritual asks for good luck when starting a big event-
and He put makeup for interview with magazine.
Actually the shooting happened a few days later.

Today they released few shots taken from drama site and he didnt look like have heavy makeup; no eyeliner too. :)

Sorry for my poor English.

I always wonder how accurate the portrayal of historical fashion is. Does anyone know, if they really had bangs like this in the past? There are so many historical (fusion) dramas, in which the male characters has bangs and it feels out of place and more like they tried to adjust the looks for the modern viewer.

Don't look for period awareness in fantasy sageuks. It's going to be far from traditional. They can have bangs if they want to.

I feel like the costume is not good,
I feel like the color they choose is dark and Lee Jun Ki looked great, it just his clothes is not that good
They are prince and noble, tbh I expect more to the costumes,
I find Shine and Go crazy has really good costume, and I just want to looked more bright, Empress Ki is placed in China so it doesn't include,

I hope they did it well because even if there's tons of romance, it wasn't really a bloody love triangle of I love her 1st and I Love her too, it's all a choice, circumstances, and love.

I hope the political also interesting,
and for the look of it. I think KHN actually reminds me of 4th prince than LJK,
maybe because all I saw in LJK is Iljimae's role

I hope I can stand heartbreak this time, I survive BBJX and Jade: Palace of Locked Heart, I think I can survive this one too

It's an earlier time period so the costuming is different. Look at that awesome asymmetrical haircut he gets to rock instead of the flat hat he wore in Scholar and Arang. The funny thing to me though is that judging by his instagram he wears MORE makeup in real life than in this drama.

I really hope they don't make ALL the princes fall for her. Not all of them did. There were really only 2 major love lines between the girl and the princes and my favorite relationship wasn't even a romantic one, but rather a friendship and camaraderie between her and the 13th prince. I really hope they don't leave out the main girl's sister because the sister-ship was so strong in the original show.

Lee Jun Ki looks absolutely gorgeous as always and I love him, I really do and I watched nearly everything he starred in, bar Scholar which I couldn't go further than episode 5 or 6 because of how cliche the whole thing was. I mean I knew vampire stories weren't my cup of tea but this was even worse and the main girl was so annoying it made me miss Park Min Young's Daemul because as unfit for crossdressing as a boy as she was, she was at least not nails on chalkboard like the girl in Scholar. Sadly, this project as well, I'll have to pass because I'm just tired of romances in kdramaland and how unoriginal they are, regardless of the setting and because of IU. I can forgive a lot of things because we all make mistakes but what she did with her last album and her interpretation of Zeze's character in her song was absolutely nasty and the fact that she didn't at least sincerely apologize for it made it impossible for me to look at her like I used to.
