(Kim) Soo-hyun joins melodrama Monster as spy second lead
by javabeans
After circling on the casting-go-round for a while, MBC’s upcoming revenge melodrama Monster is finally winding down, its main casting complete. Kang Ji-hwan was cast last month as the hero out to seek his revenge against the greedy rich elites who trampled his family, followed by Park Ki-woong as a dissipated chaebol villain, Jo Boa as a chaebol daughter, and Sung Yuri as the heroine whose love is like “a flower in a mud pit” to the hero.
Kim Soo-hyun (or simply Soo-hyun, as she’s dropped her surname to avoid confusion with the Hallyu super-duper-star) is the newest addition to Monster, returning to dramaland after her Hollywood turn in Avengers 2. She’ll play a spy who gains employment at Dodo Group (run by our central chaebol family) under false pretenses and is carrying out a secret assignment for the national intelligence service. She did previously play a spy for the drama Level 7 Civil Servant, but maybe this one will be better written. Really, it couldn’t be much worse written.
Her character clashes with Kang Ji-hwan repeatedly when he persists in asking questions related to her secret mission, and the bickering turns into love—at least, on her side. I expect he’ll only have eyes for Sung Yuri, but how can we have an angsty melo without a love triangle or three?
Monster spans twenty years and fifty episodes, beginning in the ’90s in the post-IMF era with Lee Ki-kwang and Lee Yeol-eum portraying the lead couple’s younger selves. It will be a Monday-Tuesday drama premiering in March; it follows Dazzling Temptation.

Instead of the typical rich guy falls for poor girl, can we have rich guy falls for corporate spy? Why are Kdramas so freaking repetitive?!

She really knocked her part out of the park though. As limp as the rest of the drama was I really enjoyed her parts and basically rooted for her character because she made her so interesting.

Ugh, I wish they would settle on a name and go with it. It gets confusing to figure out who is who. I am admittedly terrible with names. I guess I know her better as Claudia Kim. Not sure why she would not stick to that when she has to shorten her real name so as not to be confused with the male actor from You From Another Star.
I hope this is a good drama as I really like Kang Ji-Wan and want to see him in something, though he is better in rom-coms because he is great at physical comedy and has great timing.

Well, I think sticking to a western name isn't going to work in the Korean industry. It's not that uncommon for actors/actresses to have a western name they use for their international works and a Korean name for Korean projects.

It's sure not only her problem. There's 2 actors named Lee Min-ho!
In the US, union rules prohibit actors from duplicating names, but since Korea has certain name elements that get repeated, duplication of names is common. There have even been plot points in dramas where someone is not understood to be (for instance) a childhood friend because their name is common.

Lol, I think the name Kim Soo-hyun is very common in Korea. There's a popular writer with the same name, then her and obviously the super-duper star lol. I'm glad she dropped the Kim, it can get very confusing tbh.
Anyway, she was sort of a spy in Runaway Plan B? I liked her character in that drama and she was decent too. Not amazing but enough to make me think she'd do well here.

I liked her in the Avengers.....but damn, does this mean Jo Boa isn't even a second lead?

Frankly speaking, now i am more curious on Jo Boa, Claudia Kim (i'm gonna stick with this name instead of Kim Soo Hyun :D), and Park Ki Woong, rather than the leads. Kang Ji Hwan is Ok in rom com but i don't know if he is OK in melo.
But I just hope this not gonna be Dazzling Temptation 2.0. I am so tired watching DT because of repeating scenes. But still watch because I like JSW, even tho i skipped some episodes.

She is pretty and good in English too. Hehe. She is OK as an actress even i dont think she is lead material at least for now. But who know if she will change my mind later, like what Honey Lee, Kim Sa rang and Jang Hee Jin did to me. :P

Let's get the other Lee Min Ho to drop the Lee, very confusing, esp. if one actor becomes insanely famous as is the case with LMH and KSH...

But there is a Minho too; the lead in TTBY, so dropping Lee is probably not the best option for the '93 LMH.

Also, LMH'93 was actually the first one to use the name as an actor, iirc.

Is Minho's last name coincidentally also Lee? that would be funny. I like Korean names, but they can be hella confusing.

You would think speaking English well would work when cast as a spy. You know, she can use that language when talking to anonymous handlers on the phone, etc. And I liked her as the token Asian in Avengers and loved her in Fugitive, so winsome, tall, and hot and really speaks English well :)

Just saying wasn't there a Kim So Hyun in School as well.
The actress for twins doesn't she share the same name as her as well as the lead from You From another Star. Must get real confusing when it comes time to send scripts to the actors and mix ups etc :)

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. I really thought that it's Kim So Hyun from School 2015. Not to mention the confusion from Kim Soo Hyun (You From Another Star). Well, it must be the common name in Korea.

She and Sung Yuri were together in Romance Town too!
I may check this out at least the first two weeks, 50 episodes is a big commitment.
