Jeon Do-yeon confirms The Good Wife remake, Yoo Ji-tae considers

They did it, they actually did it—tvN has lured Jeon Do-yeon (The Shameless, Secret Sunshine, Harmonium in My Memory) back to television! What a major get.

Talk first emerged late last year that Jeon was in talks to star in the remake of the much-acclaimed American TV series The Good Wife, and after over a decade exclusively working in film, Jeon has confirmed that she will be headlining the show, taking the role originated by Juliana Margulies.

Moreover, Yoo Ji-tae (Healer, The Tenor—Lirico Spinto, Oldboy) is considering the role of her husband, the disgraced state attorney who gets sent to prison following a public sex scandal, propelling the main character to return to her former career as lawyer to support her family. In this version, his character would be a prosecutor with the Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office. Perhaps he’s a little young for the character (he’s 39, Jeon is 43), but Yoo has a wonderful gravitas and somberness to his acting, so I don’t worry that he isn’t up for it. They’re both fabulous actors individually, and now I’m excited to see them together.

Directing is PD Lee Jung-hyo of dark noir series Heartless City and bright rom-com Witch’s Romance; writing is Spy’s Han Sung-woon. The Good Wife has secured a Monday-Tuesday timeslot on tvN, to follow mystery-romance Oh Hae-young Again, which in turn follows hostage-negotiator-thriller Pied Piper. It premieres in July.

AMAZING. Jeon Do-yeon is a major win for tVN. After getting Kim Hye-su for Signal, and the epic cast they have for Writer Noh's drama, tVN is becoming an even bigger attraction that broadcast channels.

Wonder who will be cast as Will!!

That writer though... I didn't like what I saw of Spy. :/ PD is solid.

Still, apart from Kim Hee Ae I couldn't think of anyone better for the role tbh. tvN must be over the moon. TGW is one of my favourite shows, I hope they somewhat do it justice. I'm kinda worried because every law kdrama I've ever seen has been pretty ridiculous, lol.

I wonder who they will cast as Will...

Keep in mind though Spy was a remake of an Israeli show so there's that additional influence.

I used to love tgw but I couldn't take the emotional toll...hahaha...but tbh I think the earlier seasons were the best. I'm excited to see it's tvn doing the remake.

yes! I need her to be just as badass. I hope tvn doesn't "tone her down." I loved her character and her friendship with lead.

Presumably it will be shot in advance like Cheese in the Trap which will help getting top film stars

I think so. There is no script page and live-shooting which was one of the reason kept the top actors/actresses away.
First Choi Ji-woo (20 again), and Kim Hae-soo (Signal), and Jun Do-yeon, and there is Go Hyun-jung (Dear My Friend) who will reunite with Jo In-sung after 11 years (the drama 'Spring days'). Great news for drama fans!

I never paid much attention to 'The Good Wife', figuring it was another American lawyer soap opera, and was surprised to learn it was a series that commanded so much respect. Writing
must be better than most American shows these days.

Of course, now that I learn it has a 'sidekick lady with boots' and I'll have to check out its visual quality!

Hi, The "sidekick" is the paralegal, "Kalinda". And during the first seasons she was the one who would find the crucial evidence to save the heroine's case. Archie Panjabi, the actress who played her, said in an interview that she could only play her wearing boots.

Sorry I must correct you especially if you haven't been watching American television lately. Television has come a looong way especially with shows like Game of Thrones, Hannibal, Mr.Robot, netflix originals. Its the best Tv has been in a long time.

I"m really curious to see how The Good Wife Korea will turn out since I'm a fan of the american show. I guess that if this and Entourage (haven't watched the american series but I'm curious of this one as well) do well, the korean remakes of american series will keep happening. I trust tvn but we'll see!

Wowzers. Now that is one huge get! Honestly, after Jeon Ji-hyun made such a triumphant and lauded TV comeback, I expected many do try doing the same too. Kim Hye-soo I wasn't as surprised, but wow Jeon Do-yeon for tvN? That's big.

I haven't seen the original but it sounds good. The only issue is the writer... But I'm sure JDY accepted it for a reason so here's to hoping.

Ps. I wonder if any of the A-list movie actors can get lured in. Like Lee Jung-jae, Hwang Jung-min and Jung Woo-sung. That would be so awesome but really unlikely though.

Omg, it's happening! Yoo Ji-tae is my ultimate ahjussi crush but Peter is the worst eurgh. I wonder how much of the plot will be inspired by the original since there are so many seasons. I hope they'll at least give the judges memorable character quirks because recurring details like that made me love TGW.

Will has to have a certain charm. He does "bad" things but he gets away with it, and you kind of want him to.

Second thought, this is a kdrama so there's a chance that Alicia and Peter in this dramaverse will end up "happily ever after," which might be why Yoo jitae was cast as Peter and not as Will.

Kalinda....who is sassy and badass enough to play Kalinda? She'd have to be young though. The character was only supposed to be in her 20s. Much younger than Alicia. And Eli Gold! Can any actor do justice to the deviousness that is Eli Gold?

This is so amazing. I'm almost starting to think it's like how American TV has been. Film actors are being lured back to American television because TV is probably THE best and most diverse and varied it has ever been thanks to increased competition with streaming sites producing their own quality originals.

And we all know that tvN is being lauded for soooo many of their dramas. The stars are catching on: tvN is the place to be. The good working conditions that come with pre-producing so many shows lately doesn't hurt.

idk, I think tvN is throwing money at big names, and big names are responding. If we look at Korean cable and the kind of output they've had over the last couple of years, I'd say jTBC is a lot closer to the HBOs and AMCs of America--jTBC throws money at big names as well, but ultimately lets them have a lot more freedom to take risks and try to say something. You'd have to go back to 2010 with Joseon X-Files to find a legitimately great drama from tvN, whereas jTBC has produced virtually all of kdrama's modern masterpieces--A Wife's Credentials, The End of the World, Cruel Palace, Queen Insoo...even their good but flawed dramas like Cruel City, Secret Love Affair and Yoo-na's Street have been consistently more mature, thoughtful, and innovative than tvN's most celebrated shows (Misaeng, Answer Me, etc).

Required fields are marked *

I disagree; jTBC has some decent dramas but they lack consistency. I agree that they probably take more risks than tVN, but that does not make their shows *better*. Of their dramas, Cruel City and Secret Love Affair are the standouts, but even then both dramas fell foul to some suspect writing in later stages.

tVN though has grown leaps and bounds over the last 2-3 years. Just in the last 2 years I recall Misaeng, Reply 1988 (and the previous two if you will), Heart to Heart, Oh My Ghostess, Hogu's Love, Liar Game...and then Signal, Cheese in the Trap look like they are headed in the same direction.

Regardless, CABLE is winning.

I disagree. I think tvN has gotten worse in recent years--it used to be home to more eclectic and inspired dramas like Joseon X-Files, or Fight, or Hyena, but now it churns out a particular brand of "thoughtful," "quirky," "understated" entertainment (and occasionally painful fascimiles of genre) that resemble products more than art. There is no human truth left in them. No soul.

Anyway, Mindy seemed to be comparing tvN's rising success to the wellspring of creativity in American TV, which is why I brought up jTBC--tvN is not creative at all anymore, they've merely perfected their formula and are reaping the rewards. Shows like A Wife's Credentials or Cruel Palace, or the End of the World, on the other hand, are as mature and intelligent as the best our TV golden age has to offer--Mad Men, Breaking Bad, etc. And that's not to mention the minor miracle of shows like Cruel City and I Live in Cheongdamdong, among others--legitimate, uncompromising genre shows on Korean television, which also bears more comparison to American TV than tvN's brand compliant fare.

I think only a few people here ever get to watch End of the World which was a fantastic show btw. (I'm still mad at about the cut and it has been 3yrs lol). I think the lack of subs contributed to it but you are right about jTBC's shows.

The one that I haven't seen is "A Wife’s Credentials" but I'll get to it soon.

0

The End of the World, is the best kdrama I've seen thus far... Now if they can complete the subs for ILIC, i'll be very happy, heard good things about it...

I'm so excited! When I watched Jeon Do-yeon in the Korean remake of "Dangerous Liasons," I was already super-impressed. Then I watched her in some movie where she was a "Housekeeper." While I never did finish that film, she was definitely the highlight of the whole show.

I'm glad she's going to be doing some tv, cos I'm a bit like JB in that I don't watch very many movies...or, I leave so many unfinished.
