Drama Hangout: Moorim School

Since we can’t be awesome all the time and cover all the dramas, we’re reviving a long-dormant feature for the dramas that we’re not recapping, so that there’s a place for you to convene and talk about certain shows even if there aren’t episode-by-episode recap posts.

We’ll start off with this Drama Hangout for the currently airing Moorim School, which is the least we can do after quitting on recaps; it’s never fun to make the call to end coverage for a show, especially since that means leaving a bunch of people with stuff to say without a place to say it. So think of this as Moorim’s open thread, or water cooler, or support group, or whatever floats your boat, really. It’s a place to talk anything and everything about the show, for as long as you want to talk about it, whether it’s about how pretty you think Lee Hyun-woo’s hair is, or how much you wish the show had more plot.

So go! Be free! Have fun! If there’s a ten-page manifesto to be written on Moorim School, it may as well be written by you! (I’m mostly kidding about that—no one has a ten-page manifesto to write on this, do they?) And keep your eyes peeled for more Drama Hangouts to come!

Just want to know the name of the song being played during the scenes with Shin-Woo and Seon Duk?

Like scenes such as their kiss scene?

It isn't part of the OST yet, but I saw somewhere that it's by LHW, called Spring Soul.

Moorim School has a fairly decent storyline IMHO. It's not meant to be a movie production like X-Men or Harry Potter, but for the budget it has for TV, I think it's doing quite well. I reckon one reason for many not feeling as if this is a "good" drama is likely cos of the genre. I don't think many people do scifi fantasy that well for TV series in general, and even less popular in Asian media than American. Even if they do it well, this genre also attracts a very specific and small crowd - it's not for mass appeal.

As for the acting - the rookies are really rookies and mostly idols. The veterans are really veterans (and I will place Lee HyunWoo in the veteran group). Hence the disparity in acting skills and the glaring obviousness in some of them. Overall though, I think the experienced actors more than make up for it and it bothers me very little that HongBin's acting range is actually very limited. His expressions just pretty much flit between more pained and less pained.

All said, I'm sticking around for Dean Hwang's back story, ShiWoo and SoonDeok's beautifully developing romance, and SoonDeok's father's involvement in this. I'll bet he got blind in that fire.

Hanging on a thin thread now. Ep8 was decent - going somewhere then ep9 was blah.. then ep10 was a little above blah. The things I do for Lee Hyun Woo and will continue just for him. Looking forward to his next project. :)

Episode 9 was not bad and we got Soon Deok's dad's perspective and backstory that includes (one assumes) Shi Woo and Sun Ah as the little kids in that fire. However, Episode 10 did not build much on that. It seemed to have slowed down again. And that's in a show that I feel could easily have been edited more and have had more character development included.

We need to know more about the adults to appreciate what the kids are up against... some idea of what Dean Hwang, the Meditation Prof Beok Gong, Wang Hao (Shi Ang's dad) and Chae Yoon (Shi Woo's dad) are capable of and why don't we see anymore 'magic'.

I find that Moorim's world is intriguing, and it could be so much more so if some attempt was made to build on what was shown in the beginning. What is the International Moorim Institute and what does it do (besides teach martial arts), why is this thing about world control even a part of it? It would be nice to know if there are any rules that this dramaverse follows, like under what circumstances is the seal open or broken, or what triggers Shi Woo's abilities or how much magic Moorim people are capable of and who gets to have magic.

If nothing much is being shown to us to explain the magic and abilities, I guess, at the end, we may get a whole lot of exposition (not preferred but better than nothing) to help us understand more about Moorim.

I think there's no great magic here but a force power they think it exist and want to be great only to find out that there's no power at all - . Like Kung Fu panda

I'm impressed with the new episode 9-10 - its so slow and dragging but I realize something - our decisive and selfish responses of our past affects our future and its being shown in this series. I like Shi Woo and Seon Deok's selfless conversations and learning from Wang Chia's wanting to be on top. Shi woo was there but he felt so alone - everyone loves him but they cannot help him in his pain. Wanh Chia chooses to be cocky always ending to dissappoint others and asking everyone's pity. Oh love it - I can see Seo Ye Ji and Lee Hyun Woo's mature acting! But I'm military signs that LHW will be taken away soon. Hahahaha.

This show is actually getting better! I can see it progressing towards the feel of the opening scene in ep 1 which got me intrigued in the first place. (A type of fantasy drama). Fight scenes, maybe a little more magic coming out, good vs. Greedy evil.

It's really too bad that the ratings are not as good as they should be. For whatever reason people didn't like it or aren't sticking with it - maybe they didn't like the casting of the characters, the acting, show moving too slow, etc. or the going back and forth between Korean and English by one person in particular. I've had some the same feelings. I've chosen to ignore or accept some of those annoying things (much like I have to leave my common sense and logic at the door as I do with some of these other kdramas), and enjoy the ride that the show is trying to take me on.

I can't ignore the potential of the show and it's storyline, which is intriguing to me. AND THE SHOW IS GETTING BETTER AS IT GOES ALONG.

Sad to hear about the disagreements with production costs, but have a feeling this writer's intention was to have an epic battle at the end fitting for a fantasy type show. Not sure how they will do it now, having to trim 4 episodes off.

My hope and wish is for someone to remake this in the way it should be made if it be in China or Japan etc. The plot would make a great anime, book, or even movie if done right. JMHO

I find the story interesting. It's quite different from most Korean tv dramas. The magical part is really getting better. Wang Chi Ang may have promised to beat Shi Woo but still he helps him get his energy out! I hope they don't botch the last episodes just to shorten it.

Not surprisingly, the late axing of 4 episodes from this series meant that the final stretch was filled with sudden personality transplants and cheesy exposition of secrets, which I found quite hilarious at times (I'm sorry, Mr Lee Moon-sik, but I couldn't help laughing at your attempt to portray gravitas with the Shim Bong-san character).

Nevertheless, I did enjoy the show (especially the eye candy - both Seo Ye-ji and Jung Yoo-Jin are very pretty haha). A pity they didn't have an opportunity to develop Wang Shi Ah and Hwang Seon-ah's love line earlier and in a more organic manner (Wang Shi Ah's preoccupation with Seon dook was especially grating near the end).

I just watched the ending.. it felt like the Kung Fu Panda ending (the first one) where you have all the power... the Chintamani was so hyped and asked about in the school and it ended up just fooling them and telling them that they had the power within them the whole time
