Drama Hangout: Moorim School
by HeadsNo2
Since we can’t be awesome all the time and cover all the dramas, we’re reviving a long-dormant feature for the dramas that we’re not recapping, so that there’s a place for you to convene and talk about certain shows even if there aren’t episode-by-episode recap posts.
We’ll start off with this Drama Hangout for the currently airing Moorim School, which is the least we can do after quitting on recaps; it’s never fun to make the call to end coverage for a show, especially since that means leaving a bunch of people with stuff to say without a place to say it. So think of this as Moorim’s open thread, or water cooler, or support group, or whatever floats your boat, really. It’s a place to talk anything and everything about the show, for as long as you want to talk about it, whether it’s about how pretty you think Lee Hyun-woo’s hair is, or how much you wish the show had more plot.
So go! Be free! Have fun! If there’s a ten-page manifesto to be written on Moorim School, it may as well be written by you! (I’m mostly kidding about that—no one has a ten-page manifesto to write on this, do they?) And keep your eyes peeled for more Drama Hangouts to come!

I was actually impressed with how much I (and many others) REALLY liked Lee Hyun-woo's grey/white hair. It really complimented him.
Theeeennnn they dyed it jet black.

I know. It suited him great, I've never seen a Korean idol or actor look that good with such a color. The results are usually very unflattering, but Lee Hyun Woo looks fantastic.
And then they had to change it. Why.

Not gonna lie: I love this show! Haha Sure it has issues, lots of them, but it's so easy to watch; especially since other shows (like Remember) are giving me a headache. It helps that ShiWoo and SoonDeok are so adorable together!
Also, not to start a riot or anything, but am I the only one who thinks Lee Hyun Woo isn't that great of an actor? *runs for cover* I still love him though!

Actually he is not bad. But in this drama, I must agree, the acting is not that great. But it is not just him, overall. Story is not that bad but definitely lack in execution.

he is underacting since there is no need for him to exaggerate his expressions. and his role, so far, calls for cool yet snobbish idol who fell for his mentor...

I agree. I think that Lee Hyun-Woo is trying to not "overact." His range is pretty good. One side of me likes him whenever he plays angst (he does sad so GOOD), and the other side of me is so happy whenever he radiantly smiles. He is capable of playing both sweet and innocent and tortured, angst so well. There just isn't really a lot of "meat" in this drama for him to make that sort of level of acting make sense. If he were to act in that extreme of a way, he would be accused of "overacting" or trying to get attention, IMHO. I think that his acting suits this situation rather well.

He's basically sleepwalking through his role...
I've seen him in other dramas, and even movies and he can do better.
I wonder if he just mentally checked out and is just going through the motions. When an inexperienced idol is putting in more effort than a seasoned actor, that's telling you something.

I think this show is such an cute, easy watch but it definitely isn't for everybody.
I just wish they would cut down on the love triangle and give the bromance more time to delevlop since that's why I stuck to the show in the first place. It's pretty much endgame that shiwoo and seon duk are gonna be together, wang chi ang never stood a chance and I prefer him and seon ah anyways.

I am really enjoying this show! It's my guilty pleasure.
The kids interactions are holding the story together and I like each of the 4 leads separately and together. Also, hurrah for writing strong females leads who can kick ass. Seon Ah is so cool and someone I'd want to meet in real life.
Shi Woo and Seon Deok's romance is so aww-worthy. I love that their relationship is equal and built on mutual trust and friendship. It's nice to see the male leads treat their girls well both before and after they start liking them. (Discounting that one time Shi Woo blew up at Seon Deok over the video)
Admittedly, there is not much plot, but as everybody has mentioned, it is easy to watch. Sometimes a fluffy show can be just as fun as other heavier fare, especially if Lee Hyun Woo is there to up the pretty.

The story has sure became interesting at episode 8. But the script and directing is still the same. No improvements.
Hongbin's acting is still awkward, and I find Seonduk annoying at some point, maybe because she is tolerating Chi Ang's attitude problem.

This OST is A+. When Shi Woo looked up at Soon Deok after she realized who put the dress in her room as the chorus to "The King" kicked it, I stopped breathing. He looked smoking hot at that moment. Lee Hyun Woo's all grown up. /tears I thought this was his first kiss scene, but apparently it's his second. Shi Woo's self-composed serenade to Soon Deok sounds sweet. As Chi Ang was being wheeled into the hospital and VIXX sang "Yeah, I'm alive," I said aloud, "You better be."
Moorim School would have never won its time slot even without Six Flying Dragons and Glamorous Temptation as competition, but at least netizens have stopped complaining and have started acknowledging the show as lighthearted entertainment.
P.S. I keep accidentally calling Soon Deok, Deok Sun.

OK, I confess the only reason I'm sticking with this somewhat silly show is for Lee Hyun-woo (love his hair for awhile and loved him in films, The Technicians and Secretly Greatly) and I think the actress who plays Soon Deok is super pretty in a very different way. I really like the developing love story. It certainly adds depth. Thank God. I'm also cruising on how much I loved the dean, Shin Hyun-joon, in Gaksital. OMO, THAT drama!!!
But hey, I HAVE to be honest here. I'm glad to see several people forgiving Moorim School for the glaring plot holes and the awful, cheap flubs like making it so obvious they are climbing up stuff using wires. And using that poor German Shepherd as a substitution for a wolf. OH PLEASE. It just galls me after such perfection from Korean dramas to see stuff like a fist flight that lasts five minutes yet no bloody marks on faces or messed up clothes. In that sense it really is like really bad American shows with non-existent production values - or the producers have deliberately made this drama for the 10 to 13 set who are in love with Hongbin from VIXX. Hey, I like VIXX too for their music!
OK - enough venting. Moorim School, to me, is just mildly entertaining fluff but I'm really glad it's so popular. I'm just spoiled by the outrageously good dramas that are airing right now like Signal, Six Flying Dragons, One More Happy Ending, Remember and Madame Antoine (which is silly but also really good!). Please forgive me....or does anyone agree with me? Hello...anyone?

I love u dramabeans for doing drama hangouts. I've been thinking for the past few days if there was ever a DRAMA that you guys stop doing recaps (yet still watch) and wish you were still doing recaps bc the story has gotten better!
I watch both moorim school and signal after work and before going to bed....I'm so damn curious about the mystery! I agree with chi ang when he tells shi woo to stop smiling..."bc i might like you"....everytime lhw smiles, i think of him in both episode running man--young and innocent. But here, he seems more mature.

Thanks Heads and DB for giving us a Hangout place to chat to our hearts' content :)
The reason I am un-ashamably enjoying this show: It is light and cheesy, even ridiculous and fun. It reminds me of my childhood adventure stories where kids, with their limited resources, did all the challenging things and the adults were merely in the background to pick up the slack at the end. It does not pretend to be highbrow and does not raise expectations. It can be enjoyed for itself without viewers feeling cheated if it is not great (it made no promises) and it might even surprise us with how good it can be (take the hot kiss and organic pairing of Soon Deok and Shi Woo!). In this particular period with heavier shows like Signal and Remember, ... thought-provoking shows like CheeseITT, etc .... it joins the fun shows like One More Happy Ending to lighten the mood.
I'm glad to be watching and to have a community of viewers and commenters to watch with! :)

@ Growingbeautifully- I agree with your comments. It never made any promises to be anything other than what they have presented. We can just watch it for it's entertainment value. I especially liked your comments about how the adults and the children are almost in two separate "worlds," much like shows and cartoons of old. Maybe because of this, the show gives me a nostalgic feel. It has (SO. MANY.) plot holes and could be better, but it is still fun.

Glad I'm not the only one still enjoying this!
I'm having so much fun watching the different relationships develop and getting to know these characters, especially Chiang. I love him so much, and I swear it's not just because he's played by Hongbin. (Though it's true I am wholly and unashamedly Hongbin-biased.) He fascinates me in the way he hides behind other people's perception of him as a spoiled brat who can't do anything for himself. Sure, there's a large and genuine part of him that is a whiny kid who thinks he can buy whatever he wants, but I do think he plays it up quite a lot so other people will underestimate him and won't see his real weaknesses. He's surprisingly really resourceful and clear-headed in a crisis. And while my heart broke for his little mermaid crush that could never be (his methods are childish and he discounts her feelings, but his pain over watching her and Shi Woo get closer is real, and doubly so since Shi Woo is as he said his first real friend), I also adore what is growing between him and Seon Ah. It's so beautiful because it's built on trust and respect, and I hope he doesn't take too long to realize how much better and healthier it is than what's he's trying to force with Soon Deok.

Here are the reasons I personally like Moorim school:
1. Yoon Shi-Woo and Hwang Sun-A remind me of Luke and Leia from Star Wars!!!! At first you might ship them but then you realize thats nasty cause they are probably related.
2. The cast and their hair!!! Its like a Loreal commercial up in here. I mean Lee Hyun- Woo hair is great but I have major respect for Seo Ye-ji. Hair that long takes serious maintenance- so respect. The only person with bad hair on this show is the meditation teacher.
3. Magic- nuff said
4. Foreign actors who dont play 2D parody cartoon characters of foreigners. Are the characters perfectly developed??- no. But they are a hell of a lot better than that californian surfer guy from the first couple episodes of heirs. I mean that guy was just painful to watch.
5. Questions for days. Who dun it? where is the scar guy from episode 1? Where is the last piece of the key thingy??

I went into this drama just to stare at the prettiness of Lee Hyun Woo and wasn't expecting much. So far its been entertaining and super hilarious if you're watching on viki with the comments on.
I will say that I am a bit turn off by the second lead. He's cute and serviceable but the way he treats the main girl is extremely off putting. He never listens to her and brushes her feelings and situations aside like she some doll for him to play with. I hope that changes soon.

Mooerim is entertaining, the story is interesting but the directing is far from ideal. Just as simple as the transitions of each scene feels is so bad... Thanks to Lee Hyun-woo im still watching this drame -.-

I dislike the cutey poses that Seon Duk is making, which are probably from the director's orders. Some of her expressions seem forced and unnatural. I much prefer the mature and calm countenance of Seon Ah. I also hope there will be more interaction between the twins Seon Ah & Shi Woo. Develop the brotherhood all you want but please don't neglect the siblings' connection. I'd never liked campy stuff before Moorim School. It's fun and it's even more fun knowing that I cannot arrange any words to defend the quality of the drama. I like it because I like it.

There's lot of loopholes in the story - but I will believe in LHW acting. She grew beautiful here. He was asked to do a snobish Idol until he started to see it not all about him. SYJ - they are so cute. SYJ is also a powerful actress - and I never knew she can be a leading actress materials. I like her very much as support. She's so good. The rest I only knew about Dean's past acting - all good.
In the story - SW knows how to make the lady out of tough SD! She values her thoughts. They also allow each other to talk their thoughts! Especially how SW clarifies his meaning of Sorry when she push away not prolong the kiss.. While Wang Chia values SA's though without even knowing it. WCA makes a lady out of SA. They can talk to each other - friendship is still the powerful foundation of relationship.

Ah, Moorim School. I have to admit, I'm not really liking some of the aspects of this show. The love story feels a little rushed and it seems to be taking over the friendship aspect of the show, which is what most of the viewers are watching this show for: the tentative but rather compelling friendship between Shi Woo and Chi Ang. Specially in episode 8. I know it is not right to call dibs on a girl, but shouldn't Shi Woo be at least a little little bit more concerned about what Chi Ang is feeling? Or at least, have a smoother transition than showing Shi Woo look sorry after being punched in the face by Chi Ang and a second later be talking on the phone with Seon Duk with no qualms whatsoever. I'm not asking for Reply 1988 denial here, just showing a little bit of sympathy.
And that ending in Ep 8. Boy, that was a hot mess. How can anyone crash his motorcycle into a moving car, and emerge practically unscathed? How about the utter incompetence of the lackeys who kidnap a girl without knowing what she looks like? Or who don't know the face of the son of the man they work for? So much suspension of disbelief.
And yet. AND YET. I can't stop watching this show. I'm not even sure why. It might be because of Lee Hyun Woo's pretty pretty face and hair that's blinding me, but there's definitely something here still. It's a very easy watch, that's for sure, but I think it has more to do with the sincerity the actors are playing their parts, and as others mentioned, it feels very early Disney Channel-esque. I don't now. All I know is for now I'll keep watching it.

I agree that Shi Woo has his faults but thats why him and Chi Ang are drawn to each other as friends. Whereas Chi Ang is overly verbal with his emotions, Shi Woo is an emotional mime. Even with their differences, at their core both these boys care for others and have strong reasons to be at Moorim School. That's what make their friendship so interesting, despite all their bickering and denial when it comes to moments in their lives that really matter, they are there for each other. EXCEPT (it seems) when there is a girl involved *frustrated sigh*!!!!
Is there another mountain we can just stick the two of them on??? That seemed to work last time :P

It was not even a love triangle. It's just one side love from Chi Ang. Chi Ang was exaggerated. He got no right to punch Shi Woo at all. Soon Deok was not Chi Ang's girlfriend and never showed any sign of romantic toward him at all. If he was mature enough, he should respect Soon Deok's decision. Even there's no Shi Woo, he would't not stand any chances with Soon Deok anyway.

I don't like how Chi Ang treats Soon Deok, because he doesn't listen to her at all... But... It's true that he made clear to Shi Woo that he liked the girl. I think that Shi woo should've been thoughtful to Chi Ang and talk to him about his own feelings before making any move on Soon Deok.
Friendship, you know...

Because for the sake of their friendship, that's why Shi Woo did accept the punch and not punch him back. They all just in the early stage that got to know each others. It wasn't like they were childhood best friends or something. Finally the one that Soon Deok chose was Shi Woo. She was so transparent about her feeling that's why Shi Woo made a move on her. Chi Ang got dibs on Soon Deok first, but It didn't mean he own her. And the way he did, it's more like he just got a crush on her. Chi Ang was all about talking, but Shi Woo who used his action to show how he cared and paid attention to Soon Deok.
I hope the show won't drag about Chi Woo having crush on Soon Deok no more and please won't use this opportunity to make Chi Ang goes against Shi Woo because it's so childish and unreasonable and would make Chi Ang totally immature. I prefer all four main leads to be likable and the show already got enough good plots to reveal. I would prefer they all move on, got the right person for them and try to solve the mystery together.

this drama needs a lot to improve. ever since episode one, i can't stop finding faults in this drama. it's not like I want it to be perfect but, although it seem like it has some ideas, some plots,,, the story, the character, the growth of the character, and even the pacing of the drama seem troublesome to me. it needs fast pacing for the first few episode and start putting in some flashbacks. because the idea of a magical is absurd enough so why not show the best scenes and add in some boring scene as flashbacks. sorry moorim school. you're just that suck in my eyes. thank you for finally decided to unrecap it

I think the show IS starting to get better. Though some might argue that it's just my fondness for Lee Hyun Woo talking.
Though some of the conflicts of the show are really unbelievable I am willing to overlook that. The mystery of who the real villain in this show is really curious.

There's not much to say about this show except that it's fun. No deep thinking involved, no keen micro-analysis to be made, no "10 page manifesto" - just plain fun.
I'm able to completely switch off whilst watching this, and yet still be entertained by what it has to offer. For sure, it may be on the shallow end, but it beats shows like night scholar, and Yong Pal, both which I gave up by episode 8 due to the WTF*ry they dished out.
Then again, never say never. Early days yet.

Am I the only one who thinks that Lee hyun woo looks like Lee Hongki of FT Island?
That aside, I find myself loving this drama. Probably because I love to watch the pretty face of LHW and not expecting too much of the show. And the hair too. LHW's hair was great!!!!

at the beginning i wanted to watch this series is because of LHW, then after a few 'campaign' i tried to set aside LHW and go for its story because it looks interesting anda must be so fun if they go with the friendship theme.
but after 6 episodes, the only thing i still can handle is LHW's face. anything else is totally so not in my favour. is it only me who want a romance free story?! if there will be romance, just let WCA and his ariel fan boying mode. and i dont really care if in the end ariel will give up.
and what the hell is with that character that speaking english?! he just too much and i actually skip all of his scene everytime his face appear.
and the 2 teacher that.. why they keep fighting? their banter is just so boring!
please anyone tell me if i should leave the series. because i dont think i can handle any more cliche!

Forget everything else.. LHW is a good kisser! I personally don't like the Seon Duk - not sure if it is the character, the actress or all of it. Yeah that kiss was hot and when the red suit rocked especially that look he had when he was the one who chose the dress for her. LHW all the way and the other actress and the 2nd lead. Thanks Dramabeans for the "Hangout" :)

This is just my personal point of view when I started to watch k dramas.
I'm a big fan of LJK. Even if everyone says that the story has no sense, I still watch every drama he made or read every story on the web with regards to him. Maybe because I love his acting & pretty face. I find him so kind too.
Sorry, back to this series. I just need a little introduction.^_^
I began to have interests with romcom. It takes away my stress. But I noticed not all that everyone is complementing awesome..was really has a good plot, a good story, oftentimes the movie just casted good looking guys & girls.
I stopped watching those at the middle because it doesn't entertain me at all.
Then here comes another genre which I find the actor captivating. No question with LHW looks, he is really good looking. I find his acts natural & other casts seem ok too.
I always watch Disney movies, sci fi & mystery movies with my son.
All of it don't have to contain heartbreaking acting from the cast. Maybe that movie/ drama genre doesn't have to be.
Just like moorim, it is just right for this kind of drama genre. No need of heavy acting, just light, natural & entertaining.
The mystery is now beginning to be revealed.
Well, ep 8 is showing progress to that direction.
If not with the flashbacks & maybe slow introduction on the mystery & how LHW & company are all tangled in its mystery..the episode 7 & 8 will not be this enteresting .
If I jumped to ep 7 & 8, I will not understand a thing on the story.
I need to watch the previous episodes in order to understand the latest progress of the story.
Is this fortunate, I dont need to think hard to understand the series, all I need is to be entertained with LHW good looks & acting on this.
Anyway, my goal is not to give myself a headache but entertainment.
And I think this drama genre just delivers what I need..a little mystery, light acting, pretty faces & entertainment.
I agree, LHW is a good kisser.^_^.
And yes, I also noticed his resemblance with Lee hongki of FT island when he dyed his hair black.
But I think the blonde hair suits him best.
