Cheese in the Trap: Episode 11

And we’re back! Phew, that was a long two weeks, but I white-knuckled through it. I don’t know if it was because the romance was in a cooling period that coincided with the break, but it seems like an extra long time since we’ve seen our couple together, let alone happy. I think we’ve earned some happy, don’t you? This episode is a big one for our heroine, who faces some harsh truths about her family and begins to fight for the things she wants, in more ways than one.

EPISODE 11 RECAP

Seol can’t help herself and stares at the picture of her boyfriend looking cozy next to In-ha, and has to convince herself not to attach any meaning to it. She puts it down and tries to focus on looking for a job, and happens to overhear Little Bro Joon whining for more allowance from Dad, and Dad just handing him more money so that he can “live like a man.” While Seol gives up so much for them to get by? Ugh, the sexism in this house, I swear.

Stalker Boy Young-gon spends an entire class muttering to himself about how he’s going to embarrass Jung with that photo of him and In-ha, after which he’ll be the only guy left in Seol’s life. You know, for a stalker, you know very little about how many guys are orbiting Seol.

Eun-taek can sense the stalker’s stare and ushers Bora and Seol out of class as soon as it’s over, but Seol pauses when she sees In-ha standing in the hall waiting for class to be let out.

Young-gon does his damnedest to catch up to Seol, brushing aside his girlfriend Da-young, who’s already fed up. She demands to talk now, at which he raises his hand to strike her. He stops short, but it’s enough for everyone to gasp.

Suddenly In-ha steps in and slaps Young-gon across the face and screams at him for being a cheating bastard. Muahaha. She pounds him over and over, crying that he said she was the only one. She stares Da-young up and down, calling her Young-gon’s second girlfriend on the side and pitying her.

Da-young doesn’t believe her at first and demands to know who In-ha is, but In-ha shows everyone the picture of shirtless Young-gon on her phone (ah, so that’s what the naughty picture exchange was for). Young-gon tries to defend himself, but Da-young says the photo was sent from his phone number, and slaps him across the face.

Young-gon won’t go down like this and takes out his phone to show everyone the photo of In-ha with Jung. He says that this girl is really Jung’s girlfriend, not his. Seol has stood by this whole time without saying anything, just wondering curiously how In-ha would know Young-gon.

But now her anger bubbles up and she thinks to herself that it enraged her to see Jung dragged through the mud by a scumbag like Young-gon. Seol steps out from the crowd and says she’s seen the picture and acts as cavalier about it as possible. She says she knows In-ha and is friendly with her brother, and that Jung grew up with them. Seol calls that amount of skinship in the photo no big deal for someone like In-ha, lying that she spent time abroad, and In-ha comes running to cry on Seol’s shoulder.

Young-gon tells them to stop acting and screams that Seol couldn’t possibly know In-ha, but he’s the only one who looks like a liar now, and Da-young calls herself the crazy one for dating a lying bastard like him. He tries to calm her down and explain himself, but she cuts him off: “Get lost, you dirty bastard, and never call me again!” She slaps him one last time and stalks off, and In-ha gets in one last hair-grab too.

Young-gon scrambles up from the floor to plead his case with Seol, but she stares him right in the face and says, “Trash. You’re trash without an answer.” She pushes him away, and he deflates. He stands there in shock as everyone walks away from him.

Seol asks In-ha to sit down with her for a chat, and admits that she said that stuff back there to make In-ha’s story more credible. Seol asks warily if In-ha really dated Young-gon, or if this has something to do with Jung. In-ha can tell what she’s afraid of and says it has nothing to do with Jung this time, but wonders what Seol would do if it had.

In-ha says there’s really only two types of girls around Jung—the kind who run away scared or cling because they know he’s loaded—but this is the first time she’s met someone like Seol, who’s neither.

In-ha thinks Seol is just stringing Jung along and will leave anyway, and warns her to do it sooner rather than later before making things hard “for our Jung-ie.” In-ha adds a warning that she’ll make Seol leave if she has to, and then makes a big show of texting Jung.

Meanwhile Jung is busy being the work doormat. The assistant manager above him just continues to abuse his power and dump all the busywork on Jung, purposely excluding him from lunches with the boss and putting his name on all of Jung’s work.

Jung is so frustrated that he slams his chair as he gets up from his desk, but he spots a few other co-workers staring curiously, and he remembers his father’s warning that people will be watching his behavior.

Seol tutors In-ho in the library, and he wonders if they’re allowed to be in here when she got fired from her job. She points out that she wasn’t banned from being in the library, and says she’s got plenty of time to oversee his studies. She sets her timer for another practice test, and by the time it goes off, she’s asleep.

In-ho scrambles to shut the alarm off and then watches her sleep, remembering his sister’s accusation that he liked Seol. He stares at her and wonders aloud, “Do I…?” He starts to write in his textbook, and tears the corner of the page out to leave as a note next to Seol before heading off to piano practice.

She wakes up sometime later to read the note, which just says that he’s sorry he didn’t finish the practice test, and nags her to sleep at home, not at school. Adorably, she takes out a red pen and corrects his grammar in the note.

In-ho practices “Für Elise” and thinks of Seol as he plays, and his teacher listens from the hall with a smile, hearing the emotion in the way he’s playing. He thinks that it sounds like a sad wind, and decides that In-ho is becoming In-ho again.

Jung tells In-ha that his one condition in accepting her deal was for her to stay away from Seol. I knew you put her up to this! He’s upset that her idea of taking care of Stalker Boy was to make a public scene involving Seol, but In-ha says in her defense that Stalker Boy went wherever Seol went. So while stalking the stalker, In-ha ended up seeing a LOT of Seol… and In-ho by her side. And naturally she took a whole bunch of photos to prove it.

She shows them to Jung, feigning worry but obviously enjoying this, and Jung can’t really hide his reaction to seeing them together all the time. In-ha offers to send the pictures to Jung and walks away with a brand new credit card.

Seol walks home and thinks over In-ha’s accusation that she was stringing Jung along. She realizes that she’s right about being non-committal: “I can’t run away, I can’t accept him. I can’t commit. But then when things get hard, I wish Sunbae were by my side. And I miss him.”

When she opens the front door, she’s pulled out of her thoughts by Dad yelling at Joon and hitting him over and over. He’s discovered that Joon dropped out of school and doesn’t want to go back to the States, and Dad refuses to let that stand. He tells Joon that he’s leaving right away and he’ll put Seol on a break from school to pay for his tuition if he has to. What the ever living…

At that, Seol shows herself and finally speaks up. She asks why she should have to take time off of school for Joon, when last semester she had to give up her apartment and start doing a four-hour commute, on top of part-time jobs and maintaining her scholarship.

Dad says she might feel bad now, but he asks her to think of the future, because all she has to do is get married, while Joon has to take care of their family. BARF. Seriously?

Seol asks, “Am I not your child? Do I become a stranger when I get married? I work part-time jobs on my own, earn my own tuition. I worry about my grades slipping, that I won’t be able to keep my scholarship. My head feels like it’s going to crack because of money worries every single day! No matter how much I try, you’ve never once been satisfied. You’ve never once praised me. I want to be praised and comforted too.”

Mom goes over to comfort her, but Seol says that Mom is no different—in the end she asks Seol to take on all the responsibility and just expects her to do it. Mom says it’s because she can depend on Seol more, but Seol asks, “What about me then? Whom do I depend on?”

She runs out in tears, and Joon runs out after her. Out in the street, he finds In-ho instead, and panics that Seol ran away from home and isn’t answering her phone. In-ho starts looking for her too, wondering what caused the sudden burst of teenage rebellion.

Seol calls Bora while she walks through the neighborhood, hoping to see her and Eun-taek. But when Bora says she’s having dinner with her father, Seol acts like nothing’s wrong and says they’ll catch up next time.

She tells herself, “Nothing’s changed. You’ve always done well on your own. But sometimes… sometimes I…”

She looks up and her face suddenly changes. Off in the distance, Jung is standing by his car, smiling hesitantly at her. He doesn’t approach, but the sight of him makes her burst into tears. He mouths silently, “Seol-ah, how have you been?”

At that she takes off in a run towards him, and he starts running to her too. She runs into his arms and sobs freely into his shoulder, and he just holds her silently, comforting her as she cries.

In the distance, In-ho finds them and hangs his head to see that she’s already found solace in Jung. He turns around and walks off with a long sigh.

Jung and Seol sit in the car once her tears are dry, and Jung says, “I missed you. A lot.” Seol answers, “I missed you too. Very much.” He smiles and tentatively reaches out to hold her hand, and she puts her other hand on his.

Seol narrates, “There were so many things I wanted to ask Sunbae when I saw him again. But the fact that he was there by my side right then, that I could see his face and hear his voice and feel his warmth, that’s reason enough why I can’t break up with him.”

When Seol gets a call from Mom, Jung offers to take her home so that they don’t worry about her, but she doesn’t want to go home yet. He suggests a drive and they pick up snacks on the way, and eventually Seol just falls asleep in the car.

The next morning, she wakes up in Jung’s bed and it takes a long moment before she realizes that he’s standing there smiling at her and saying good morning. He teases her for her bloated morning face and her loud sleeping habits, and says he couldn’t sleep a wink. He says that her parents texted multiple times, and he asked Bora to call them so they wouldn’t worry.

He confirms that she doesn’t have school today and then hops into bed with her to catch a nap before work, insisting that it’s her fault he couldn’t sleep. He throws his arms and legs around her and says he’s going to trap her so she can’t run away.

Once he’s got her there, he nuzzles up close and asks, “Can I call you now?” She doesn’t answer, so he leans over and kisses her. Jung: “Can I come see you now?” Another kiss. Humona, please never answer him ever again.

He stares into her eyes, and she finally gives a little nod. He beams and nuzzles her forehead this time, murmuring, “Thank you.”

Seol walks up to her front door with a grim expression and expects the worst when she walks in. Mom is upset at her for staying out all night, but Dad seems slightly nicer in his gruff way, and Joon is eager to make her feel better. He whispers to her that Mom and Dad were really worried, and Mom insists on making her breakfast.

Mom sort of blurts that she’s sorry and says she didn’t even know one of Seol’s friend’s phone numbers to call last night, and that if Bora hadn’t called, she was ready to call the police. Clearly Mom and Dad are still fighting though, and Mom says she’s grown tired of nagging Dad to stop wasting his time on money-sucking ventures and start caring about their noodle shop.

In-ho is still wearing last night’s clothes in the morning, and he asks Joon if Seol came home okay. Joon says she just came in after spending the night at Bora’s, and it dawns on In-ho that she must’ve spent the night with Jung.

Perhaps the fight with Seol was the wakeup call Dad needed, because he arrives to meet In-ho at a busy street corner to hand out flyers for the noodle shop. In-ho complains that he looks stupid in the picture, while Dad insists that he paid to use him as a model, so he has the right to use the picture. In-ho points out that payment was a bowl of jajangmyun, lol, so Dad offers to buy him another lunch today if he passes out flyers with him.

Seol texts Jung to tell him she got in trouble and calls him her accomplice, and he jokes about confessing to her parents. His shameless assistant manager comes by to ask how the report is coming along, and Jung says he found a few things to add, but will have it ready by tomorrow. He smiles to himself though, which means he’s up to something.

Young-gon sits in the dark like a creeper and keeps calling In-ha repeatedly, but she doesn’t answer. His reputation is only getting worse by the day, because someone has uploaded pictures of him stalking Seol on the university message boards. You can’t really see faces in the pictures, and he tries to argue that there’s nothing to prove it’s him in the photos.

At first he wonders if it’s Jung or In-ha, but then he remembers In-ho chasing him out of the library and decides it must be him. Young-gon goes to school (thinking to hide his face with a tiny branch, pfft) and runs up to harass Seol about it. But Eun-taek and Bora see him coming and intercept Seol before he can get to her, and Seol ignores the text he sends her about getting In-ho to back off.

Bora asks what happened the other night, and is shocked to hear that Seol really did spend the night at Jung’s place. Eun-taek: “In the same bed?” Seol insists they just slept, and Eun-taek counters that Jung should go to the hospital if that’s the case.

In-ho looks hesitant when he arrives for his tutoring session today, and instead of sitting next to Seol like normal, he sits two seats away. When she gets up to take the seat next to his, he scoots all the way into the aisle to keep his distance. Are you going to pull her pigtails next?

Seol starts packing up her things, so he finally inches slightly closer, and she uses that chance to yank his chair back so he’s next to her. She starts correcting his homework and explaining what he did wrong, but he’s so distracted by his racing heart that he can’t focus, and just abruptly calls an end to their session today.

They ride the subway home together and Seol says that things must’ve been hard on Joon too for him to have dropped out of school like that. In-ho says that Joon isn’t completely thoughtless, and says that he was running all over the neighborhood looking for her the other night. He catches himself and adds that that’s what he heard, not letting on that he was running around all night too.

In-ho chides her for running away from home at this age, and tells her, “As your runaway sunbae,” not to do it anymore. She says mockingly that he sounds like an adult, and he scoffs that he’s technically her oppa.

Seol: “Then should I call you oppa?” LOL, the look on his face. He stammers, “O…oppa?” He tries to act like that’s absurd and barks at her not to call him that, only he can’t hide the grin on his face.

She starts having fun with it and coos, “Why not? Oppaaaaaa~! Ohp-pa! It’s okay, Oppaaa!” Naturally, he’s grinning like a loon.

He suddenly gets all cutesy in return and says they should go somewhere to mark the occasion, and then returns to his tough guy act and tells her to stop with the oppa-ing. He keeps muttering it to himself though.

They get off at the next stop and Seol starts whining, wondering where he’s taking her. When he doesn’t tell her, she grins to herself and calls out, “Oppaaa~, In-ho oppa, where are we going?” I love how flustered he gets.

He just tells her to follow and takes her to the street corner where Dad is handing out flyers for the noodle shop, and tells Seol that he’s been doing this by himself for a while now. Seol is shocked that this is what he’s been doing when their family thinks he’s wasting his time on some other money-making scheme, and she stops In-ho from approaching him.

Seol has a better idea and returns with Mom and Joon in tow, with the excuse that she’s going to take them out to dinner because she feels bad about running away from home. They accidentally-on-purpose run into Dad and In-ho, and Mom is suddenly a little sweeter to him, still nagging but tying her scarf around Dad’s neck so he won’t catch cold.

They insist on going out to family dinner, and In-ho pushes Dad to go with them while he stays behind to hand out flyers. In-ho doesn’t want to impose on a family dinner, but they refuse to go without him, which warms my heart.

Seol makes him swap places with her at the table because she knows he eats with his left hand, and In-ho is touched when Mom puts meat on his plate and Dad makes a lettuce wrap for him. They’re surprised to hear that he’s studying for his high school equivalency exam and encourage him sweetly, and Mom tells Seol to help In-ho. Can they adopt him?

The next day, In-ho’s rendition of ” Für Elise” is sunshine and rainbows, and Teacher wonders why his emotions are so up and down lately. Teacher decides that they’ve already had their lesson for the day and suggests lunch instead.

Young-gon tries yet again to get to Seol right after class, but Bora and Eun-taek race over to her just in time. They discuss lunch plans, but when Seol gets a text from Jung saying that he’s on campus, she runs off to have lunch with him.

Bora sighs, and Eun-taek asks if she’s jealous and if she really intends to keep him as an underling forever. He’s obviously angling for more, but she ignores it.

Seol bounds up to Jung with a huge smile and he offers her a hand as they skip off to lunch. They eat in the cafeteria, which reminds Jung of the time Seol skipped out on him to go on a blind date. She sheepishly tells him not to bring up such ancient history.

She asks how work is, and he in turn asks how school is going for her. She starts to answer honestly, and then catches herself, realizing she almost told him about Young-gon. She thinks to herself that she doesn’t want to talk about Young-gon today, though she intends to tell Jung at some point.

She wonders if she ought to tell Jung about tutoring In-ho, and decides that it’s just studying and she should tell him. But just then, In-ho and his piano teacher happen to walk up with trays of food.

Teacher recognizes Seol and sits down next to her, and In-ho reluctantly sits down while exchanging cold glances with Jung. Teacher tells In-ho that he ought to thank Seol for passing along his card, and In-ho mock-thanks her, while Teacher sighs that he should’ve studied and come to school properly.

In-ho says that the studying is no big deal and prods Seol to agree that he’s doing well, and she starts coughing violently to shut him up. She thinks, “I haven’t told him yet,” as she coughs long enough to break that chain of thought in the conversation.

Teacher asks if Jung is also In-ho’s friend, and In-ho answers, “No,” while Jung answers, “Yes.” Jung introduces himself and asks if In-ho is playing piano well these days, and In-ho tells him to mind his own beeswax.

Teacher says he’s doing really well, and that his playing is full of emotion that wasn’t there before. Teacher turns to In-ho and asks, “Are you dating lately?” And now it’s In-ho’s turn to cough violently, a reaction that grabs Jung’s attention.

In-ho insists that there’s no girlfriend, but Jung already seems to catch on, and suddenly stops to take Seol’s hand in the middle of lunch and peel a grain of rice from her sleeve. It’s a tender gesture, but in the context, it feels a little like marking his territory.

Teacher finishes his lunch and gets up, and In-ho is about to get up too, when Joon calls. He asks In-ho to buy a bowl and kitchen towel on his way home, and In-ho asks Seol where it was that they bought stuff the last time. Seol says they can’t shop there anymore and just leans over to shout into In-ho’s phone that that store sells faulty merchandise, and In-ho says they’ll go elsewhere.

He hears from Joon that Mom and Dad went out together, and both Seol and In-ho light up at the same time. She asks if they really went out together, and In-ho says they must’ve made up and that her buying dinner the other night must’ve really had an effect.

They’re ecstatic, but Jung watches this whole exchange with a dark expression, growing ever darker as Seol and In-ho continue to finish each other’s thoughts and speak about things he’s never heard of. Their rapport is so easy, and Seol doesn’t even realize that Jung doesn’t know what they’re talking about when she turns to him and repeats that Mom and Dad went out together.

Jung flashes back to high school, when he’d come home from school to find In-ho and In-ha sitting with Dad in the living room, chit-chatting easily about their day and laughing, while Dad just gave him a silent nod as he walked past them.

He can’t shake the thought and gets up to walk out, and Seol runs after him to ask what’s wrong. Jung stops and says, “It looks like you’ve gotten very friendly with Baek In-ho.”

She hesitates and starts to explain that she’s helping him study, on top of the fact that he works at her parent’s shop, but at that Jung just starts to walk away again.

She tries to hold him back, but he pulls his arm free of her grasp and just walks away, leaving her stunned.

COMMENTS

This whole thing with In-ho is a much more interesting conflict than all the stalkers, because I like how it brings out old insecurities in Jung. He’s pretty unruffled by most things, but it’s clear that there’s a long-running jealousy there in how easily In-ho makes friends and wins people over. Jung is just one of those people who doesn’t know how to be that open and approachable, and it’s likely been a thing he’s envied in In-ho for a long time. He literally has the one thing Jung can never buy with all the money in the world. Perhaps he saw a shift in his father’s attentions as a teenager, and that’s what started the rift between the two boys. And if it’s happening all over again with Seol, I can certainly see how frustrating it could be for Jung, who only ever sees In-ho coming in and receiving love from the people Jung loves most. Told a different way, In-ho could’ve been the evil stepbrother who takes everything that Jung loves.

Only In-ho isn’t evil; he’s just the kind of person who wears his sincerity on his sleeve, and happens to be lovable on top of it all. The wounded artist thing certainly doesn’t hurt, but he’s also just a good guy who works hard and genuinely cares about the people around him. The thing that upsets me the most is the idea that In-ho might be adrift again if he can’t stay in Seol’s life, and I want Seol to just tell Jung, I’m friends with him, so deal with it! That’s probably insensitive though, considering all of Jung’s issues with In-ho (not to mention the fact that In-ho likes her, which she doesn’t know). I just need him to have a family, okay? (And no, In-ha doesn’t count.) Is it too much to ask that Seol’s family adopt him and Jung get over it? Probably. Sigh.

It still bothers me that Seol can’t tell Jung what’s going on in her life, and no matter how much I like them together in the moment, every time she holds back from him, I wince. She should be able to tell him about everything, but even that night when she ran to him and cried on his shoulder, in the end she said nothing about what made her cry or what she’s going through. I know that In-ho knows most of this by default because he’s around her family in the day-to-day, but she also just confides in him very freely, and I can’t help but think that’s how an ideal relationship should be.

It’s her fault for overthinking things with Jung and always wanting to show him only the good parts and leave out the bad, but I understand why she didn’t say anything about Young-gon, because then retaliation would be inevitable, and they’d be back to square one. I mean, even now he’s lying to her about sending In-ha after Young-gon, no matter how much In-ha went off-book. I don’t know, on paper, this relationship shouldn’t work; but when they’re running into each other’s arms, I just think, Well of course they should be together. Duh. Honestly though, I don’t know how it’ll last if they continue like this.

I’m often enraged for Seol when watching this drama, but I was especially angry today, and I’m still miffed that they redeemed Dad so easily. I know he didn’t have an abrupt change in personality or anything, but for me it wasn’t nearly enough that he had been secretly working hard to make their noodle shop a success. What about the part where you valued your son over your daughter and thought her future amounted to the person she’d marry? Are you kidding me? It was maddening enough that they’d made her work so hard to pay her own tuition while they sent Joon abroad and paid the bill, but he actually expected Seol to quit school and start earning Joon’s tuition too?

I’m still livid that a father of a daughter could think that way, and it informs a lot of Seol’s personality—her meekness, her tendency to let others take advantage of her. It also makes me proud for how far she’s come in standing up for herself and fighting her battles, especially standing up to Mom and Dad, which had to have been the toughest thing to do. Now, more than anything, I just want Seol to have someone she can lean on and tell everything to, someone who will always take her side. I think Jung could be that guy… but will she ever trust him enough to let him? And… should she?

Why do i feel like In Ho's screentimes are more than Jung lately? Why do I feel like the writer told us about In Ho's stories more than Jung? I started to feel tired watching this drama, why love triangle is like the centre of the stories?
This centre of this drama should be Seol and Jeong right?

I am frustrated on why the love triangle like becoming the centre of the story, in which I wanted to believe that the writer nim will try to avoid. I am frustrated that Jeong seems to be left in the dark again, like he is not important. I am taking it too personally now that I even skipped In Ho's scenes.

So many why.,.. maybe what is left in this drama that I am eager to watch only the relationship between Seol and Jeong. I could not care about In Ho In Ha whoever anymore.

I agree completely. The show has quit developing Jung since a few episodes ago, and it's frustrating to see when remembering how this drama started off. What happened to all the beautiful detailing? Why has the show been morphed into a standard love triangle drama? I see no purpose in giving a secondary lead that much screen time, especially when it means leaving the main relationship underdeveloped.

I guess it can be cute to some people who enjoy the SeolxIn-ho moments, but I'm not watching this drama just to see cute. I've been watching it because I sensed that CITT had a depth and sensitivity that most romance dramas lack. I appreciated that it had a different method of storytelling. There were so many ways in which they could've used In-ho to reveal Jung if that's what they were aiming for with this love triangle, but instead, they took the very predictable route.

I feel exactly the same! They've totally lost sight of what was beautiful about the show in the last few episodes. Not only have they abandoned making any progress on Seol and Jung's relationship, but they have also not shown any real change in Jung and In Ho's relationship either.I hope they will turn it around before it ends and we are left unsatisfied.

As much as I love everything so so much, I just can't be fully satisfied with it. The ongoing theme of Seol and Jung's on and off relationship just bugs me a lot (as the main conflict, like yeah we have some varieties like but the main conflict is always the same. Plus, after every conflict, it doesn't feel like their relationship has evolved much; especially them as individuals...). If I can talk to the characters in the show, I would say: Jung should learn to accept that people have their own way of thinking and pls stop being jealous (and easily angered) all the time, plas!!! And Seol, just pls pls pls learn to trust in Jung more?? He deserves it. Stop trying to push ppl away and pls realize that sometimes you're just not strong enough...

But despite that, I love the show, very very much! But the ongoing themes do annoy me sometimes... I know that character development, well, needs time and that is the reality... Idk, but I just felt like this is dragging on too much.... I hope that it'll be better! But nevertheless, keep up the good work!!! And thanks soo much for giving an excellent summary of it~~~ Good job!!

It's making me uncomfortable how much Seol is the one getting disliked because people feel bad for Jung. The k-netizen comments have been pretty fixated on that and it seems a lot of i-netizens are following suit. Seol is one of the best written, best acted character I've seen in dramaland in the longest time, and it's sad that now most of the comments I read about her are restricted to how much she doesn't understand or attempt to understand Jung, how hypocritical she is for being jealous of In Ha while not attempting to maintain any distance from In Ho, how she refuses to let Jung in, how she isn't grateful enough for all he's done for her, she's being wishy-washy etc., etc.

It's not that these aren't all valid points in and of themselves, they might be, but they take away from Seol's character. So what if she's hypocritical re: herself/In Ho v. Jung/In Ha, it's human to be hypocritical, to be embroiled in your own point of view and be blindsided by what others think and feel (especially people as cryptic as Jung). We've seen it not only with Jung but also with other characters; she doesn't fully understand In Ho either, she can't tell how much he likes her, she didn't know about her dad distributing those pamphlets or Jun having dropped out of college. People are limited in their knowledge and interactions and they make mistakes of assumption. It's normal. But Seol is held to an unreachable standard because she's apparently not supposed to be an individual in her own right who can be selfish and short-sighted and occupied with her own matters, because then how is she supposed to see Jung's pain. There's no acknowledgment that she's lived her life in the background. It's her first real relationship, she's immature in it, she makes mistakes, and Jung is intimidating as a character, and there's a barrier of seniority in their interactions, which breaks down sometimes, but exists nonetheless. In fact, it's what she likes; that he feels older and put together and so he can give her that stability and comfort she feels she lacks, someone to turn to. But it's also a barrier because she can't be open about everything, she first has to gauge him for his reactions because of his past behavior and because she, like almost all people in the first stages of a relationships, wants him to see her at her best.

But she's not always at her best. Seol is paranoid by nature, quick to suspicion, reserved to a fault, and these are all real character traits. Traits that manifest in every single second that she's on screen. They're not cutesy adornments that exist only to create tension and mystery or something. Seol's paranoia materially affects her interactions with Jung and her reservations materially affect her other relationships, with Jung and Bora, for instance. As they should, because they're her character traits. They're not just narrative conveniences for the sake of furthering a...

...romantic plot. Like Seol's discomfort with skinship was so visible, even in the cute kissing and bed scenes, where her expression was so uncomfortable for the longest time (I was really surprised nobody commented on that, or maybe I missed it.) Because that too is an aspect of her personality and doesn't merely exist to show how innocent and ~pure she is and how she just needs the right guy to draw her out.

Sure she doesn't communicate or explain herself or try to understand Jung at times, yes she can be hypocritical, so well, she's just... not a very good girlfriend, why would that be so hard to accept? Seol is a lot more things, a fully realized character, not being a particularly good girlfriend makes her human in my book. I just don't understand people who are willing to understand Jung but not Seol. Seol too grew up with the idea that she always had to be perfect so her parents would love her, that she had to bear the difficulties alone so she wouldn't be a burden and make her parents unlove her more, as I'm sure she saw it as a child. She grew up working really hard because she wasn't particularly good at anything and that's her work ethic now. That's why she's reserved and refuses to open up. She too is a product of her environment. At least Jung openly feels wronged, believes he deserves better, but Seol, even now, doesn't. Jung is also convinced everyone else is in the wrong ("you're the strange ones"), but Seol still feels like she has to try to understand everyone; her father, Jun, her mother, Jung. She has so many moments where she tries putting herself in other people's shoes, even if she can't fully grasp their realities. And sometimes she's nice to them when people don't deserve it. And sometimes she's not very nice and just plain wrong about people. And that's okay, for the show, because that's Seol. This show is good to Seol, it cares about her, it prioritizes her, and I love that about it. And it makes me sad that that's what gets her hate; that her narrative is privileged in the text.

I clocked Seol's discomfort, but I'm not sure how much stock we're supposed to put in that. It seems to be a Korean thing. The woman can never appear to be (horror of horrors) enjoying a kiss too much. (Or at all, apparently.)

That is true, but I have faith in this drama not following those tired tropes because we had a scene earlier on where Jung tried to pull Seol away from an oncoming car and she literally screamed and jumped away from him, which was definitely a strong reaction to have. There have been hints that Young Gon stalking her and trying to physically ambush her created a deep-seated sense of paranoia and fear in her and it manifests in her avoidance of physical intimacy. I think they've established pretty well that there's a reason why Seol is afraid, and she's been consistently the same so i don't think it's merely an addition to fulfill the romantic tropes of purity etc.

But it's also that this is her first relationship and she's a little inexperienced and conservative, which is why her disappointment when she thought Jung had forgotten about their kiss.

0

Now that you mention it, though, yes, I would have expected the drama to treat the physical intimacy more thoughtfully. They've ignored tropes before, and made Seol more assertive than we're used to seeing in K-drama heroines.

You make a good point about Seol's fear of intimacy, possibly related to her having been stalked. If that's the reason she's so gun-shy about physical closeness, then that would be really sad, but also perfectly reasonable. Certainly better than a purity trope!

0

...ehhhhh...do...people automatically all love kissing and can kiss very well upon first lip contact? Because...if not...I see their skinship and Seol's responses to intimacy vis-a-vis her attraction to Jung as completely normal. The bench kiss - she's awkward because it's her first kiss and then she relaxes into it.

I don't think it's doing the character justice to conflate that with the physical violence that YG dishes out.

0

@Rainerust, it can be both imo, it doesn't necessarily have to be an either/or. That scene where Jung catches her was very deliberately shot in a particular way and reversed a very popular romantic trope; where the male lead saves the female lead from a potential accident and it's all tension and accidental skinship. Here, Seol was positively terrified and Jung too was taken aback by her reaction. At that point in the drama we didn't know about Young Gon, but he was introduced almost immediately after, and Seol showed those same jittery, nervous characteristics that she'd displayed on being touched, which is why I linked them. It was a deliberate writing/directorial choice. It's not all who she is and her discomfort with kissing could just be because it's her first time being intimate with someone, but it could also. be a combination of factors, including Young Gon, especially since the show openly made that connection.

0

@Zoe - yeah, it doesn't take a genius to see a connection between Seol's initial, terrified reaction to Jung suddenly grabbing her to get her out of the way of that bike, and the fact that she was stalked/Young-gon got physical with her. Added to that, she's very private, highly reserved, the product of a comparatively conservative culture where girls aren't supposed to enjoy intimacy TOO much, and this is her first real relationship - physical intimacy is still something she's only just learning to navigate her way around, because she's simply not used to it.

But it's not like Seol is gun-shy of all girlfriendly physical contact - we've seen her and Jung hugging multiple times since then, and it's certainly not played like she's under duress or uncomfortable (other than the ep 9 backhug, because they were fighting then). And she's appeared nothing but thrilled and happy after the few times they've kissed, even if it took her a moment to get over her shyness on the park bench - Jung read her correctly when he clocked that she was worried they'd be seen.

And let's not forget, Seol is actually self-aware when it comes to her physical reserve - she's the one who initiated that hilarious little cheek/eye kiss in the car in ep 7, when she wasn't quite ready to kiss Jung but wanted to make it clear that she does reciprocate his feelings of wanting her.

0

Giving you a +1000. I love how you describe Seol as i feel the same way but can't vocalise it. People give both Jung and InHo leeways for their flaws and 'understand' them but they dont extend the same sympathy and understanding towards Seol. I thought that her cringing when Jung kissed her on the bed was a bit surprising but that's me thinking based on my own experience. Taking t from Seol's point of view, it isn't surprising that she would react that way. They have only kissed thrice though...(who's counting?! lol) and this is her first relationship. Plus...she was on a bed with her boyfriend, in his house, alone. I think its natural to be slightly weary and jumpy given that situation. Even Eun Taek found it surprising that they only slept. lol

Omg I love your comment. Seol has her own issues and her own flaws to deal with, she does not exist to be a romantic partner for a boy no matter how cute or troubled. I love that we have a female lead who is allowed to be introverted and sensitive, to make mistakes and be selfish and grow.

So it makes me a little sad that so many of the comments are about the shipping war or the romance. Yes I understand this is a romcom, but ppl always complain that the female lead is too flat and unrealistic and self-sacrificing...and now that we have one who is very relatable and human and well-written she's still being ragged on?

Sure, she's relatable, and all that, and I love Seol too. What I don't like though is how the drama feels a little bit like it's sunk its wheels into mud and is spinning a bit on same ground at the moment. Did I discover anything new about any of the characters in this episode that I did not know two episodes ago? ...ummmmm....maybe that only Inha seems to be making more and more sense when just 3 or 4 episodes she grated on my nerves a bit.

There are only 5 episodes left and I think the drama could afford to move along a BIT faster.

Zoe loved both your reply. Thanks for defending Sul's ship.I prefer Sul' and her happiness more than anything in this story, considering how as you said she tries to put herself in other people's shoes, sometimes I feel like we're being too much indulgent towards Jung than the other people.Only Jung is the one who's wrong and no one else..Also,even when you're being wronged, you don't stoop to the level of those people who have been doing you wrongs right? That's where your'e different than those people. But it's like there is only one way to treat the unjust ones..in jung's life and that is through his calculative strategies.

Thank you Zoe for eloquently explaining my thoughts. I love this show for showing real albeit subtle problems in a relationship. Seol is imperfect, so is Jung, Inho, and, in varying degrees, everyone else in this story.

Many people are complaining that the show has focused too much in Inho? Well, I suppose it's because there has been a lot of movements in his relationship with Seol and her family, while there has been comparatively little, thus far between Seol and Jung. That does not mean that Seol and Jung are not growing individually, or that they are not falling deeper in love with each other. On the contrary, I think that much of their latent conflicts spring from their desire to keep the peace and not to "rock the boat", so that they get to stay in the relationship. In the car after Seol's crying episode, she thought, "I have so many questions", but she chose not to ask them in fear of the answers, and she added, "I cannot break up with him."

The drama needed to show Inho falling gradually in love with Seol. But now he's a goner. He is so deeply in love now and we have solidified our love triangle. Plot-wise, the drama will now focus on the outward manifestations of these deep-seated issues between Seol and Jung and Inho in between them. We already know who Seol is, as Zoe has described. She is one of the more fleshed out characters we have seen in kdramas. Most of the voice overs were also hers.

Now it's time to uncover more of who Jung is. I am curious about his relationships with Inho and Inha. I am betting there is more to Inha than what we have gotten thus far. I refuse to accept her caricature and two-dimensional character.

I am loving this show to the max. Again, thank you Zoe for keeping the faith.

sorry, i don't really see the Seol hate. she's an awesome character and i have yet to see anyone blaming her for either guy. if anything, they're using her as the normalcy metric.

i think it might be tempting to start defending the girl as people fight over the guys but that's usually because the heroine in Kdramas are beyond bland. this is not the case. Seol is awesome and no one is hating her - at least none that i see on this board.

+ you don't have to look far to see the censure here as well? People aren't saying "I hate her!!!!!!!1" sure, but there's been a shift in opinion since the beginning with people starting to dislike Seol for not understanding Jung etc., and being angry with her for her individualistic traits. (You literally don't have to even look far from my own comment on this very page to find these opinions, so I'm not sure how this is not the case.)

.....referencing comments from another site, without actually indicating that they were from another site in the first place, is bound to confuse people when there was no Seol hate on THIS site - the one we're actually commenting on.

And do we have to interpret every comment mildly critical of Seol as 'dislike'? This isn't a Korean netizen site, I'd like to think we know the difference between disagreeing with a character's point of view/actions, and personally disliking them for it.

I also think it's really reaching to interpret people pointing out Seol's (inadvertent) hypocrisy over the Jung/In-ha vs her/In-ho issue, as people disliking the character herself? imo it makes her more real, in that she can't quite make the link between the two situations and isn't being that way on purpose - but merely pointing it out as a problem in their relationship or even expressing frustration with Seol's inability to see it, doesn't mean anyone hates her or is writing her off as a character because of Jung.

Yes, Seol deserves our understanding and it actually makes her more real, to see that a lovable heroine has personality traits (in her case, an independent streak and reluctance to burden anyone, even those she loves) that can turn certain situations into bigger problems than they need to be, or cause problems in relationships. And this is not only about Jung, btw - we saw it as early as ep 5 when she fought with Bora over her tendency to keep things inside and never confide.

But the thing is, if we can -and we should - give Seol the benefit of the doubt for the (very normal) girlfriendly emotion of being jealous of another girl taking pictures with her boyfriend, why are we expected to write off Jung's jealousy about In-ho insinuating himself into Seol's life, as inconsequential and a thing he has no right to feel or express as her boyfriend? Especially when In-ho explicitly states that he did it at first because of her connection to Jung?

I don't find the triangle bothersome since I don't think it's taken too much of the plot (yet.) It's tropey and it's expected in a drama like this, and I appreciate how CITT has had deeper storylines and sub-storylines ON TOP of the romance to make it feel more grounded.

If the show suddenly becomes about Jung and In Ho competing for Seol's attention, and does the whole "WHO WILL SHE CHOOSE?!?!?" thing, theeen I'll be annoyed.

Jung has always been a character with a lot more depth than was told and it's great finally seeing more people realize that! If I was Jung, I'd probably turn out the same way--especially if it's the same lovable person who [may not have purposefully] taken away everything in the first place. I love Inho, but even he doesn't realize the angst he and his sister has put Jung through. It's so frustrating to watch. I feel for both of them, but Jung really has no one but Seol on his side (sometimes). I really wish Seol and Jung would just start telling each other their thoughts too! They're so considerate of each other that they just don't say anything! This was one heck of a rollercoaster episode for my feelings!

Korea would benefit so much by adopting Japanese styled seasons. They always seem to write themselves into a mess. They'd benefit with less episodes and straight to the point scripts. If I have to see seol and jung fight, break up, n make up one more time im gonna pull my hair out. You can fully expose the stalker but only choose to show his back. Why? Oh yeah, cuz u need repetitive material to meet the 16 ep requirement. You established that in ha and jung hate each other about 500 times already. We don't need another yell fest. Can we finally get some backstory on the hand incident?

Thanks for the recap! Totally loved this episode and the chemistry between Jung-Seol-InHo.

I've got to say that Jung's timing is excellent in this ep. Right when Seol was trying to convince herself that she's ok alone, Jung's presence is right there to tell her that it's ok for her to lean on someone and that he's there for her. The way Seol cried made me cry too. Poor girl. I really wish she could get a break but speaking as someone who is also thought to be self-reliant and to be reliable to others, i can see why Seol has a hard time opening herself up to others. Especially to Jung as she was conditioned to have a 'reliable' persona. In the earlier episodes, even Taek and Bora pointed out that Seol's attractive point to Jung would be her 'responsible' attitude, although they said it in jest. She tries hard to put up her best front as pointed out by girlfriday and that is exactly what she's doing with Jung. Also, I think Seol's understanding of Jung having issues with people taking advantage of him plays a part in her trying to solve things on her own without getting him involved. And in some sense, Jung is kinda...like a loose cannon in the 'payback' department. It's better that Seol deal with Youngon on her own terms. But it should also be a lesson for her that she can rely on Jung for help. And a lesson for Jung to talk her through how he will deal with it to ease her worries.

With In Ho, Seol doesn't try to show her good sides as she only sees him as a friend. A same aged friend to point (until InHo pointed it out in this episode that he was older). It's absolutely platonic with her. (Even when she did the whole "Oppa~" thing with Jung. I can't believe some people think that that's Seol flirting with InHo. *facepalm*) And as pointed out to many, Seol doesnt divulge anything to InHo either. He just happens to know stuff because of her family and because he just happened to be there when Youngon stalked Seol. I'm sure Seol wouldnt have divulged that to InHo if he hadn't rescued her in ep 3. She also did not reveal her plan of collecting incriminating evidence of Youngon to InHo. He just happened to botch her plan all the time and she had to explain the reason she put up with it.

As for Jung, I can understand why he walked off at the canteen. There are 2 types of fight stances (pulling up my psychology degree here). They call it the Bull or the Porcupine. The bull tends to have things out then and there (the confrontational type. Inho as an example) whereas both Jung and Seol are Porcupines. They roll up in ball and bear their spikes but will uncurl and fight in their own time. Seol overthinks but i love that she also tries to see the goodness in other people's actions and reflect on her own to become better. The problem with Jung is that he shuts off the people around him once he feels hurt. Which is what Seol does too. Difference being that Seol always tries to hash out the problem and she sees the good...

I stopped watching since the last three episodes, simply coz show time of Jung and Seol have been replaced by Inho and Seol. What I expect from the start of a show, I want to go through with the ship to the end. It's hard to watch when show time have been repeatedly on Inho in the recent episodes, really who is the lead now. This drama has got viewer(s) like me really confused. Even temporarily, leads should still be designated consistent showtime through out. Not happy at all.

I really had high hopes for this drama: it had followed the webtoon faithfully at the beginning. Now I am getting sick of it: what the hell with changing Jung-Sul moments to In Ho/Sul?? In HO saying that he loves Sul to Jung? That never happened. All this "romanctic triangle" never happened, course Sul is very clear about her feelings. She even confessed to Jung in 3rd season. She never thought about In HO as a man, friendzoning him from the start.

I want to slap the prodiction team and the writer very hard now. And seems like I am not the only now, seeing rating drop and all.

It's interesting how the tides changed with the passing episodes. The majority here were once pro-Inho and there were endless comments about Jung being a sociopath and a psychopath. I don't know when it happened but it seems the more people learn little and little about Jung (and the screen time Inho got which really hasn't been that much but people will be people) the more comments has been pro-Jung and trying to understand him....I just want Seol to be happy and I want to know about the hand and I need Inho and Jung to talk there issues out.

One of my friends was like, why are they making things so complicated. No one is asking her to marry the guy. You want to be with him, be with him. It doesn't work out he really is shady as get all, etc, etc...DUMP HIM. It's not life or death LOL. Since hearing that it's been gravy for me....

Um, OK. Where do I start from?

Seol:
Some people argue that she's more sincere and open with in ho, blah blah blah, but she isn't. In fact, she doesn't open up to him at all . Everything he knows came about as a coincidence because he keeps hanging around her. And really, Inho's opinion and reaction don't matter as much and can't break her heart like Jungs' would so she can afford to be careless and free around him.

Inho:
This guy has serious issues. In real life, I don't like his type because they can't be trusted. They're crooked and twisted. They act nice on the surface yet wreak havoc underneath. Seol has a boyfriend for crying out loud. If seol was his girlfriend, would he like a guy to hang around her all day, and not just any guy but someone who has stabbed him in the back. His sense of morality should tell him what he's doing is wrong. Even though he thinks his friendship with seol is none of Jung's business, IT IS Jung's business and he needs to stop messing around and breaking other people's relationship in the name of friendship.

Jung
I don't want to sound like a crazy Jung fan though. And I did analyze his personality few days ago and realized if I knew him in person, I'd take off in the opposite direction (okay, I take that back. I'd want to know him better if he allows me like he's allowing seol, hehe). But he really is wounded. And you know what they say, "Hurt people HURT people". I know it's not seol's job to fix that but she can help him. They can help each other. He's trying, he really is. I think he, (and his dad) needs to see a counselor so he doesn't bottle things up all the time and he needs to smile more (not the fake bland smile but one that comes sincerely from his heart), lol.

Just a general advice to everyone as this drama is sth we all can relate to in one way or the other in our lives. As we mature, we need to stop taking cues from others (especially our parents, they're not perfect. Mine aren't, yours aren't ) and blaming them for how things turn out. They'll hurt us and offend us at different junctions of our lives because they don't always understand us and they're also growing too. Don't live life tied to the past... what could have been or shouldn't have been or wouldn't have been. You don't have the power to change your past, stop living in the past. Do something today to create a better tomorrow.

Oh geez, THANK YOU!

Sometimes, I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't see how "perfect" In-ho is. People say this drama made him too nice? What? His "niceness" is not very deep. Actually, I sense that he is rather careless when it comes to others' well-being and/or feelings, except for when it matters to HIM. Like when he demoralized his sister and said she had no future? He's still that same guy. The guy who calls Seol's names. The guy who used Seol for her money. Maybe some people will interpret those actions as playful behavior, but I see it as coming from someone who is self-centered.

You are right. Seol is definitely not more open with In-ho. I thought that was made obvious the last episode? And In-ho's awareness of that fact still doesn't make him a considerate person. He just hasn't realized yet why she can't go to him.

I also want to point out that Jung understands Seol well. He's spoken quite a few words that connected deeply with her, on a level where it would make Seol think, "Wow, no one has said those words to me". Words she's been longing to hear all her life. So yes, Jung is trying, and it's sincere when he manages to. It's not always obvious, but the drama demands a closer observation. Yes, he still has his issues, but from what I've seen, so everyone does. And Jung is not the only one doing the manipulating. I hate it when people think that.

Bravo, loved that last paragraph. That's what I keep thinking while watching Seol navigate through all the outside messages.

It's so extremely weird how In Ho's actions are dismissed basically because he's an extrovert.

We're conditioned often into accepting his behavior IRL tho. You know people are when they write it off as just teasing, or harmless, or whatever. I remember guys like him in highschool who called people names and said, "Just kidding lighten up!!!" and how girls lived by the truth of a guy saying cruel things could be a way of expressing he likes you, so it's cute!! NO, I REFUSE.

And then acting like he doesn't play mind-games too with telling half-truths? I'm sure Jung could very well be involved with his hand, but like you pointed out, look at how awful and casually cruel teenage In Ho was to his own sister for not being as talented in art as he is at piano...and telling Jung to not think twice about standing up to people who use him...I have a feeling In Ho had his words used against him with the hand thing. Doesn't make him less of a victim or the action less terrible but he's a classic case of someone who would have benefited from closing his mouth sometimes.

KK and Itsme, but this is Baek In Ho that you both talking about, he could not possibly doing any harm to Seol when all he does is being cute and protective. He is so charming, and he find Seol's hair is so cute, so he called a grown beautiful woman dog fur. He also make sure that knowing she has a bf, his arch enemy nevertheless, so he made sure he will always be there with Seol. Because that's just how he rolls. Giving no space to a girl that he knows since eps. 3 dating someone else. And when something bad happen, it could not possibly In ho's fault, because he is just sweet In Ho, who work hard and so cute. You guys got all this wrong. Jung is the bad one here, he is malicious, vindictive, have mental issue, and need to stay away from Seol.
that's my two cents.

If I want to watch a hurt boy falling for a kind girl, but the hurt boy is an ass at first and then the girl still falling for him, I can watch the thousand and one other Kdrama.

I am hooked with citt cos the premise was different, but then, the last 3 eps, it's just meh. Why does it look so familiar? ahh because it is the same darn kdrama cliche!!!

Here's the thing:
I really do like Jung; I like him alot. He is a fascinating character and I can't help but feel badly for him, as his introvert nature prevents him from making strong connections with others.
However, I still wanna reaffirm that this kid is not all blameless. We still don't know what happened with In Ho's hand, tho I doubt Jung was fully behind it. I do however think that Jung had some hand (pardon the pun) in the final outcome.
He made Seol's life a living hell simply because she caught on to his charade. That is not something that a normal person does, introvert or no.
I just still think he has alot of growing to do before he is worthy of Seol.

GF - I love your recaps but i'm going to disagree with some of your assessments

"He literally has the one thing Jung can never buy with all the money in the world."

- somehow that sentence seems to imply that Jung "buys" alot of good things in his life. Which is completely untrue. He hates ppl who are attracted by his money. He works hard and is a top student. I don;t see him ever throwing his money around to get what he wants

"Only In-ho isn’t evil; he’s just the kind of person who wears his sincerity on his sleeve, and happens to be lovable on top of it all. but he’s also just a good guy who works hard and genuinely cares about the people around him."

- Alot of this is recent development. Inho has just started to work hard. Before that he was a lazy bum and before his accident he was arrogant about his talent. And no he does not genuinely care about ppl. Its only with seol we see that. His idea of taking care of his sister is to rant at jung as to how can he cut off his sister from mooching off him. He was dismissive to the point of being cruel about inha's art. He is not sincere - he is not honest with seol about his role in his fiasco with jung. He is just a motormouth that speaks without any breaks

.... The point is that both of them are flawed but inho is getting white washed for some inexplicable reason by the show

bips99, count me as your new fan! I agree with you, with KK, with rainerust, with@xxx, really as long as there's balance on the character, it would be just enough. no need to white washed one character just for the purpose of making it the usual drama

I keep wondering if it's the drama whitewashing In Ho to make Jung more complicated and dark, or if it's honestly just some of the viewers. A lot of people even ignored In Ho's words to In Ha about her art and I don't think it's a coincidence in both flashbacks we got him putting her down so casually as if it was an everyday event, or how we got In Ho encouraging Jung to not think twice about getting back at those who use him.

And considering how In Ho talks about that "river of tears" and implying Jung being this shallow heartbreaking playboy...lol. I don't trust what In Ho says until it's proven bc he's clearly prone to exaggeration.

Like I see people saying Jung isn't blameless...of course he isn't! I'm glad Jung is now seeing there are consequences to your actions. But the lack of people fairly discussing the other characters...is strange. But then again, the drastic changes they have made from the webtoon isn't doing any favors.

I honestly think it's some of the viewers - not the drama writers - who are white-washing Inho. It's very clear to me that the drama is showing us that Inha is as messed up as she is because of her brother. The callously cruel high school flashbacks of Inho/Inha were put there for a reason. Even if some viewers want to gloss these scenes over, the fact ithat they were included means they are important and I believe the show will return to them.

The show has not gotten into how Inha must have felt about her brother abandoning her for 5 years, but I hope it does. If I understand the little bits dropped so far, it seems Inha had more contact with Yoo Jung over those years than Inho. I don't care how crazy she is. That must have hurt so much to be abandoned by her only real family member because he couldn't deal with his problems.

I see some people feel sorry for Inho because of his crazy sister, but I don't agree. He has been shown to feel guilt about how he crushed her dreams, but so far he's done little to actually act on those feelings of guilt. His interactions with his sister fall into two categories. He's either incredibly derisive of her life choices - which are admittedly bad choices - but scorning her both doesn't help and repeats the same unhealthy patterns from when they were younger. When he's not doing that, he's engaging in codependent behaviors from just giving out money to encouraging her anger at Jung and Daddy Jung for not supporting her (when there is absolutely no reason they should). By comparison, the stuff that Inha has done to Inho, like spilling ramen broth on his music books, is so petty and childish compared to the deep pain he has caused her. I feel that Inho really has to come to terms with how much he has hurt his sister and apologize for it.

YAAAAAASSS to this "His idea of taking care of his sister is to rant at jung as to how can he cut off his sister from mooching off him".

i do think the recap is definitely pro-In Ho. it's fine because recappers are humans, too, and can like whomever. i am just surprised when people find nothing wrong with In Ho's behaviours or don't find his constant presence in Seol's life as annoying lol

This episode just made more more sure of my stand - that Jung really really really needs Seol. I understand that seol is good for inho and that both of their relationship just seems so easy and everything a relationship should be. But his personality is one that can survive on his own and still do well. I just hope that any heartbreak from this seol episode wont stop him from doing all the right things. On the other hand, Jung, who looks like he is doing better than every one of the characters in the show, might actually be the one that is doing worst. Seol may just be able to help him out. My heart aches so bad at the last scene and the flashback.

Inha's lines to seol also struck me hard. I never thought of it from Jung's perspective. That perhaps seol has a bigger fault than it seems. She hasn't really tried to see things from Jung's perspective or to understand and help him out. Whereas Jung is always there for her, albeit in his own twisted ways, when she needs him.

I can't wait to see some happy Jungs. Recent episodes have been heart wrenching. And that one bed scene hardly seems sufficient after knowing all that he goes through.

After a long wait, this episode was really like a roller coaster for my poor heart : good moments but also sad ones :/ .
I've tried to read comments on DB , but there are too many , so just sharing some moments/thoughts about this episode :
- first thing that striked me when watching it raw, was the detail of Seol's sweater on which it's written "Two are better than one", I thought "Ok it's clear for the aim of today's episode"
- even if I dislike Baek In Ha character, I felt so thankful to her : felt ecstatic when Young Gon was slapped more than 2 times and sang to myself the beloved slap song from HIMYM "You just get slapped Oh oh oh oh oh... " :D muahahahaha, then her scene in the street when she just goes crazy like she knows how to nail it :
In Ha and credit card toxic relationship for her brain x) !
- Seol fighting for herself is good as always, when she cries in Jung's arms it was so sad, and then when she realizes what's going on in Jung's bed after waking up : I laughed so hard "attention please, in this roller coaster please fasten your seatbelt" x)
- the exchanges of sms was cute too, especially Jung the accomplish who wants to confess to her parents (hahahahaha)
- and then overall thoughts for this episode , although In Ho's awkwardness with being call Oppa was hilarious, I dislike the focus on his character being too "perfect" or PD-nim trying to make him appear like that. I did not read the webtoon, but when I read some comments saying that Jung's background was so little described in the drama, and all explanation during the scene after the fight with her family was gone : I wish the drama will focus more on Jung in the next episodes (only 5 until the end T_T ).

Special mention to the bed scene : not the kisses, but the smile of Jung just after the second kiss, oh clearly I saw that he has fallen for her.
With the next episode preview , the roller coaster just went higher (especially the last sentence with a fight between main and second leads Oh oh interesting !!!! ) so I expect it to be a dense episode, but also hope for more scenes related to Jung and his background and growth, also wish that Seol and him could talk honestly .
Nearly forget to mention Bora and Eun Taek, please Bo Ra let the boy come closer, letting him be the underling forever is not a possible option :/ , they were so funny when chasing Young Gon away "go pigeons, go away" hahahahaha : amazing friends :) !

I really don't like the way things are going!I mean there are only 5 more episodes left! When are they planning to finally explain Jung's actions? From my point of view i understand where he is coming from and i don't get why people are still saying he is acting like a sociopath. But isn't it time for Seol to get some insight into his character and feelings too? When will they start communicating writers? What's with all the ''moments'' with In ho?I mean i like the guy but i feel like that's not the same show i started watching.I thought it was about figuring out our male lead's personality and why a relationship that made ablolutely no sense in the begining would end up being what we root for!Now it's just like any other rom-com with 10 minutes of the initial uniqueness stuffed in each episode. They better start making it work from now on.Is the webtoon like that too?

I didn't know this then while I was trying to read Cheese in the Trap as a webtoon but I know it now while watching this drama.
That this is such a well thought story, that makes you care so much about the lives of Seol and Jung even if there is nothing very special or sometimes I don't even understand why they liked each other or why they date. But I like how we now jnderstand where Jung is coming from. I think it is hard for him when his dad pressures him to be better but dad does not have expectations from In Ho and In Ha. He lets them freeload from him.

And that is where the rift starts, because all of a sudden Jung grew up. He became an adult, maybe dad made him grow up being the only son and all who had to take over the company. So at some point whilst having a hard time dealing with "adulting" In Ho and In Ha became people that he could not relate to. And to a certain extent, it changed his thinking of them these two people who are of no help to him, became the people who are using him. I think I could grasp the feeling of being taken away of something. Jung doesn't understand that what he has lost was happiness, and that this happiness was not taken from him by In Ho nor In Ha.

That is why he often thinks people are using him because Jung is this person who may take your burdens away, a reliable, dependable and responsible guy. Someone who you want to be groupmate. Someone who you want to be a sibling. Because he takes away the pressure of having a parent or a teacher who will ask more things than you can do. And now he is an officemate you want to be in your team and freeload from. I feel great sadness and sympathy for him.

People who gain their status from working hard. Like Jung, like Seol. The big difference is Jung despite working hard and having it all good grades he does not have a Bo Ra or Eun Taek to be there for him so its sad but he is a chaebok anyway so suck it up. While Seol despite having Bo Ra and Eun Taek to have her back, or Jung now, she is so poor she have to earn her tuition.

Each character have their cross. And how they carry them is just what makes them lovable. I don't quite feel judgment for Jung who is weary of people around him because he learned that way. That if he doesn't teach people a lesson, they will continue to be bad. So who cares if he tries to portray a better character than the dark side that he have. Don't we all?

Read the knetz reactions before coming here and wow at all the palpable frustration. To the point that people are saying Seol has become a different character. I do hope the writer and PD are taking everything into consideration and realize that the audience feel manipulated by the insistence of this love triangle. Tho I don't think anything can be done now as the drama is pre-produced.

I was soo excited for this episode because of the promised reconciliation and the hope that there will be forward movement for the Jung-Seol relationship, as well as growth for other characters like In Ho. But all I got was heartache and confusion.

Jung looks like a ticking bomb. Just a few more triggers and he will eventually explode which might force him to confront people. This may be long overdue, especially between him and In Ho. To get things out once and for all. I still believe that the rift was caused by some misunderstanding and the relationship can still be salvaged. You can see it from both of them, there is still some concern underneath all that aggression.

The YG takedown was satisfying though. Lol at people cringing at his shirtless picture haha! In Ha was awesome in that scene, as well as when she pushed Seol to reassess her feelings toward Jung.

Hopefully, next episode will be a better one. More revelations and back stories for our main cast. And a step towards acceptance and growth.

"So we need to focus on how Seol is close to In Ho" : PD idea point out the left-handed situation at dinner.
We do not need it anymore, okay so eat in the way you want... HA HA HA

I've just finished watching Life is Beautiful and I noticed that the kids all sat around the table in order of 'ranking' in the family. Like oldest son, oldest sisters husband, youngest brother in that order and they would shift depending on who was there. I thought that Seol moving was also linked to accepting In Ho in the family and because he's the oldest he sits at the head.

Or you know it was because of the left handed thing.

Couldn't it also be both?

People are criticizing Seol (and the drama) for not confiding her worries about her family to Jung but I actually thought that it was implicit that she had done so before she nodded off in the car. Surely she gave him some explanation for running away. But it was when she turns to Jung at the cafeteria and says with her beaming smile 'my parents have made up, they're on a date' or something to that effect - to him that I just assumed she had told him. Otherwise she'd need more backstory for him.

Am I the only one that assumed this?

Same, thought that as well. However it's frustrating that it wasn't shown, instead there were extended scenes of other characters. For me, that part would've been a good forward movement for Jung-Seol. Seol thinking no one cares for her and Jung firmly telling her that he's there for her.

Thank you for the recap!

Loved, loved, loved this episode. Maybe I'm deluding myself, but i feel like Jung and Seol are getting closer to finally, finally confronting each other and talking about the things that really matter. They care for each other so much, yet they're both not communicating with each other! So frustrating for us, the audience, because it's obvious to us that things would be better if they just talk about the things that are bothering them instead of bottling things up and overthinking things. If I put myself in Seol's shoes, I understand why she hesitated to bring up things that were going to upset Jung, but at the same time, for a fairly observant person she is being really obtuse when it comes to Jung's complex about Inho.

Jung, on the other hand, needs to confront his feelings instead of ignoring it. He is aware of his resentment towards Inho, but does he know why he feels this way? He is letting his insecurities poison his relationship with Seol and Inho, and I feel the only way he can heal is by confronting his past wounds. Since he had already let years pass by without trying to fix this problem, it would take something huge to force him to deal with it, and what else could be more threatening than the thought of his childhood friend coming back into his life and stealing another person he holds most dear, after his father?

I don't believe that the production crew is planning to make Inho the end game for Seol (wishful thinking, maybe? hope not). They're not even setting him up to be a viable contender for Seol's heart. There were a lot of scenes in which Inho acknowledged Jung and Seol's relationship and he always avoided interfering even though he could have, lots of times. Though from the looks of next episode's preview, he probably will soon. But the most significant thing is, Seol never treated him with anything more than sibling-like affection. If she was going to fall for Inho, she would have, because he makes it so easy to love him. But as wonderful as Inho is, Seol is already head over heels for Jung, warts and all.

OMG, this is probably the longest comment I ever wrote on DB. Anyway, Jung-Seol fighting!

P.S: can somebody clarify for me what Jung said to Seol in that scene when they saw each other, before running to each other's arms? Was it 'how have you been?' or 'Were you looking for me?'

It looks like Jung and Seol still has a long way to go if they are to have a happy ending. Both of them really need to start talking to each other about things that they are supposed to talk about a long time ago! Despite that, I'm still shipping Jung and Seol though.

I am starting to understand Jung better and it is sad to see his father caring about Inho and Inha more. Poor Jung, he may appear to be cold and manipulative but no one actually knows that he is hurting a lot in the inside. Not showing he is in pain doesn't mean that he is not hurting. Aww, feeling sad for Jung.

Yes! It will be totally great if Seol's family can adopt Inho and Inho can be Seol's oppa. But this is sadly a wishful thinking right? Especially when Inho has already fallen for Seol. Aww, I don't want to see Inho upset either.

Lol perhaps i am the only person who never suffers from second-lead syndrome xD somehow, i am always drawn to first lead and end up rooting for them.

I ship Jung and Seol but the more I look at it, she is a user. Maybe not in the financial or academic sense like people in Jung's past but something along the same lines.

Especially in this episode where she expresses that all she wants is a shoulder to lean on. Jung is exactly that. All he does is give and it seems all he wants in return is some understanding, loyalty and a bit of love.

Jung is convenient for Seol. I question how genuine her feelings are because all the alarm bells about their relationship are ringing but she overlooks them in order to keep him around, to appease him. Poor lonely, strong, independent woman Seol now has someone she can dump everything on and she won't let him go that easily.

In Ha was strangely insightful. Seol is different because she has Jung right where she wants him, in a position where she can get emotional support without having to go all the way. She has one foot in the relationship and one foot out.

So, in some ways Seol is just like the rest. She could be perceived as using Jung and he might be taking it because (1) that's all he's ever known - being a pushover and (2) there is finally someone who is accepting and understanding of his behaviour (albeit potentially for the wrong reasons).

I think that Seol and Jung are similar in the sense that she also does things behind his back and lies (by omission). By doing this she has used 'his' tactic of manipulation to keep her relationship afloat. Why not be honest? Because this would cause turbulence in the relationship and could lead to the loss of Jung (her shoulder to cry on). If you look at it from a different perspective, Seol could be seen in a negative but I suppose human light.

I like Seol but she rubbed me up the wrong way this episode.

Omg. That comment was long and I'm not sure it made much sense. But, these characters are all so complex and I can't wait to get a true insight into Jungs past. I'm eager to see how they'll wrap this show up.

Yeah, Seol rubbed me off the wrong way too. I'm happy that we have a couple whose relationship isn't all happy times. They have conflict, they try to resolve it and grow form it, but she keeps on keeping things to herself and assuming things about her boyfriend, and when he's honest, she gets angry because she didn't like what she heard. Understandable given the situations but she needs to listen too. Jung said the one time he tried to be honest, Seol got mad. Seriously, it's not working out.

As an avid follower of the webtoon I am a bit disappointed that they didn't chose to include Jung and Sul's interaction before and after the apartment scene. It is a very poignant scene where Jung tells Sul that he will always pick her first even when the rest of her family doesn't. Also, later when he tells her to go back home and talk with her parents regarding her issues with them.

What pains me more is that they forcefully include the stupid oppa scene which serves no purpose to character growth expect for tugging heartstrings of people suffering from SLS.

Still enjoying the drama. Keep up the good work guys

I understand that Jung and Seol have communication issues, but I also don’t see deep into her relationship with In Ho, they are quite comfortable with each other sure, but I don’t believe that Seol would cry / shows vulnerable in front of In Ho the way she was in Jung’s arms.
On balance the two ship are on the same.

it makes me sad that hes always there for her but the one time jung happens to be there shes so thankful to him . inho does so much for her and it's sad that he'll never get the appreciation he deserves. it hurts seeing him fall for her and having to watch them two together i just want him to be happy . i don't think jung hurt him but the fact that he stood there and did jack all makes him trash just as much. i know there's more to jung from the little peek we got today but i don't know him enough to care at this point.

i was thinking the exact same thing. she tells inho everything but hesitates so much with jung. doesn't that mean something. why do i always fall for the second leads nooooo

Hi everyone,

I'm a long time lurker, never posted before but this drama is making me a little more than annoyed and i need to vent.

I'm glad im not the only one a bit frustrated at all the in ho scenes at the expense of jung's development and the drama moving forward. Nothing against in ho per se but we are only 4 episodes away from this drama wrapping and i STILL dont completely know jung as a character? We are only getting him in bits and pieces and im just???? Ok im not gonna front, jung is my fave and im heated that all his development has been put on the back burner so that we can see in ho be cute for 40 minutes of the episode. That oppa subway scene jesus christ. Nothing has been resolved. Jung and Seol are doing this back and forth nonsense which really irks me. ive kinda emotionally checked out tbh. I wish the two of them would just stop being so indecisive and make a decision. Either you both decide to make a real, dedicated effort in building this relationship or break the hell up. But honestly i think at this point they should break up, its just not working.

And we still dont know what the hell happened wrt in ho's injuried hand. They havent addressed whatever mental issues in ha has. The stalker is still out there and very much a threat. I started watching this drama bc it did something different with its male and female lead and the characters are genuinely complex and fully fleshed out but apparently a drama just cannot be categorized as one unless there is a love triangle. I swear to god even if i never have to see a love triangle in a drama for the rest of my days it will still be too damn soon.

Like if in ho is the end game then they need to show seol losing her feelings for jung and developing feelings for in ho pronto bc as of now its entirely one sided. Ugh idk i think no matter how these next few episodes play out im gonna be rolling my eyes. If in ho was the darling golden boy lead of the drama they should have shown that since day one. The last minute switch is manipulative and confusing. But if jung is still the focal point then lmao why did they just stop caring about him for 4 whole episodes so they could show us rosy-cheeked in ho and him playing piano in various settings? I've come down from the initial citt high and what is in front of me now is a bit disappointing. Im glad we're heading towards the end tbh bc im exhausted.

At this point what i want for the characters is for none of them to be together and just work out their personal issues (get therapy) and be happy separately. I really hope jung gets the love and support he desires from his dad and is around people who accept and love him for who he is, seol finds herself a goal and succeeds in attaining it, and in ho can be the famous pianist he wanted to be. I'll gladly take eun taek if bora doesnt want him tho.

Yes!!! Thank you very much reader92!!!I hate the love triangles too!!I mean i never and i mean Never suffered from the infamous ''second lead syndrome''.Especially when most of the second leads are pretty much annoying, stalkerish people who just can't accept that their love interest is in love with someone else!I loved that In Ho was not made out to be one of those, what with acknowledging their relationship and all and then they had to go and ruin him.

Admit it, in the real world, the one outside drama world, Inho is a douche. Seol has a boyfriend and he keeps on hanging around her. Seol isn't much better. Keeping things from Jung means she knows what she's doing is wrong. Inha is right. Seol better break up with Jung. No one in this drama should be in a relationshop except Bora and Euntaek. They all need to grow up first. Inho needs to stop acting like a victim/innocent puppy wronged by the world boohoo, Jung needs to learn to defend himself and Seol needs to learn to communicate.

Drama and Webtoon, I just can't find myself getting into Jung-Seol.

While I understand and love the complexities to Jung's character (mostly because I can relate to him a tad bit) and it makes the drama all the more interesting. I just find myself continually frustrated with his character and his on again-off again attitude towards Seol; And this episode was just the tip of the iceberg.

I adore Seol and it annoys me that Jung is always calling the shots on how close or not so close she can get to him.

I am confident that Jung's feelings towards Seol are sincere because he believes/believed they are/were alike... but Seol, I'm always asking myself "but why does she like him again?"

The lack of trust and the inability to communicate between the two is a headache of an experience, and I get that most of it has to do with the fact they are navigating through a romantic relationship without really knowing much about each other.

I can't help but wonder that if more time was given for the two to just be friends before jumping into a relationship, would they still be facing the same issues?

In-Ho is such a puppy and Seol plus her family get along with him so naturally. It's fun when he is on-screen. I feel revived when he spends time with Seol. I especially like how he has kinda become like a Hyung to Joon. And yes, I am suffering from second male lead syndrome pretty badly but I am saying it- InHo-Seol just make much more sense.

*hides away from Jung-Seol shippers*

Woooooo glad I got that off my chest. Now back to my cuppa and on to episode 12! Thanks for the recap girlfriday!

Thanks for the recap, GF!

Just got back from a trip last night and catching up on the latest ep's.

Love how Seol finally stood up to Mom and Dad!! About time they realized how differently Seol and Joon are treated within the family, and how much Seol has sacrificed. What Dad said and how he thinks really unnerve me... I hope he will start treating Seol better instead of the double standards.

I really want Seol to rely on someone and I do hope that can be Jung once she learns how to be honest with him and open up to him instead of being scared of telling him the truth. On the other hand, Jung also needs to be honest and not just react in ways that are beyond Seol's comprehension. Like when he suddenly walked away at lunch after seeing Seol and Inho's rapport. If he doesn't share his feelings, Seol will always wonder what is wrong with him.

I still love Seol and Inho together. I know they will only remain friends no matter how Inho feels, but I just like how easy it is for them to be so open and friendly with each other. The whole oppa thing was so so cute and how I love the Hong family includes Inho in their family dinner. He really needs this kind of love to get back to the way things were in terms of his piano and just having a support network.

Younggon got what he deserved and I'm not surprised that Jung put Inha to this.

I seriously DO NOT like JUNG. He is a sociopath. Dude, you have a secret relationship with IN HA and you hide EVERYTHING from Seol. But when she starts making friends it pisses you off?? He is so annoying and idk why Seol keeps on holding onto him. It is clear that she doesnt trust him and every time she gets scared she just runs away from him until she feels like she needs him again. In Ho's personality and everything is way better than Jung. From the scene where Jung's dad is talking freely and openly to In Ho and In ha, you can clearly see that Jung is jealous AF.

Am I the only one who noticed the cloth colour coordination between the leads,Hong seol and yoo jung.. If seol wears a Grey skirt and blue top, jung wil wear a Grey shirt and blue trousers, even eun taek and Bo ra.twas kinda cool I dnt like d ending,it's somehow annoying.
