Chaser, Empire of Gold, Punch writer to tackle medical drama next
by javabeans
Well, this oughtta be good: The writer-director duo behind last year’s Punch, PD Lee Myung-woo and writer Park Kyung-soo, is reteaming for a new drama this year.
I know we can’t only look to past projects in predicting future ones, but these two have quite the impressive list of credits, both together and separately: Park is the one I’m more excited about, having written three consecutive critical hits with The Chaser, Empire of Gold, and Punch. Though PD Lee’s resumé isn’t bad, having also worked on You’re All Surrounded, Warrior Baek Dong-soo, and Daemul. (I’m going to exercise my K-drama-given right to selective amnesia and discount Fashion King from the list.)
All that’s been said about the new project is that it’ll likely be a medical drama, and it’s in the synopsis stage. And given that all of the above aired on SBS, I’d say it’s a safe bet to assume it’ll go there as well. Until it’s got a script out it’ll be difficult to know what kind of angle the drama’ll take, but with writer Park at the keyboard, I’m pretty sure we can expect something a little more than your garden-variety medical workplace drama. He’s a writer who often explores social issues with sharpness and insight, and populates his dramas with complex, fierce, and flawed characters, giving us the chance to see lots of stellar acting. I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for updates on this one.

So excited!!! I agree that it probably won't be a workplace drama or a procedural, but I wonder if it'll be like White Tower--which almost felt like a sageuk with its focus on power and politics in the medical field--or a more traditional kind of thriller.

Hundred times yes to the idea! Jo seung woo'll be definitely great. The chaser's scenario wasn't super original but I liked the verbal exchanges. Sharp, precise, rough. Quite excited for this one.

With this writer I'd think it'd be something more like White Tower than most medical dramas.

So excited by this news! Punch was the first of this writer's work that I watched, so I don't know anything about Chaser or EOG, but a writer's style can't change THAT much from project to project, or can it?

All three dramas are amazing. I have watched all, i cannot determine which one is the best. All are great, I have repeated The Chaser and Empire of Gold twice, on the way to repeat Punch also. hihi.

I have very limited tolerance for medical dramas, but for this writer-PD team? I'll try anything.

I just hope before any writers write about medical dramas, they do research carefully so won't make medical dramas look silly. And the actors who will play doctor too. They should learn or observe how's working as medic person.

I live for all Park Kyungsoo's drama! Being a creative writing major myself, I'm always beyond amazed (and maybe a bit jealous too) at how genius his writing is! I don't mind another legal drama to be very honest, but a medical drama would be good as well, or maybe the best since I personally think we lack good medical dramas.
So yeah, I'm completely on board but still, I'm prepared for the worst. The production team is good, but you know.. just in case. I don't want to get hurt.
For some reasons I'm not worried about the casting now. I trust them!

I've seen Punch and Chaser, I'll say I'll board on this one too. I'd super love if the writer would cast Jo Jae Hyun again. He's super good in Punch that I'd love to punch him seriously! Lol. Jk. But seriously, I've seen New Heart, and would love to see Jae Hyun back in the scrub!! I'm sure he'll nail it again.
