ah jeez hi.
what a devastating week. can´t tell how many people cried to me over skype. Bowie was their god. and then, bam! Another one bites the dust. I feel like I am living in a time, a final time, where all the legends have done their deeds and leaving. what the hell, Hans? you can stop falling now...
ah, depressing. I am in no mood to talk dramas.
Caught up to current episodes of SFD
Thinking of watching TWDR now. Would be logical?
Swallowed my anger at getting a girl drunk and watched Cheese in the trap, I dunno... is there any deeper plot? in some aspects, such a typical drama. But it can be funny at least. I dunno if I´ll stick to it.
We now have -20, finally, and 50 cm of snow. That makes me grin even if depressing things happen. and my feet are warm thanks to woolen socks made in Korea. Seriously the best socks I ever wore in winter.
there is something weird about the subtitles for Six Flying Dragons, with Bang Won and Da Kyung interactions, although it is a marriage for political reasons not love, she calls him (at least in the subs) "My dear" and it feels weird. What is the korean word and why do they translate it like that? it feels too intimate for what kind of marriage it is...
Question today: what is your best Made in Korea product at home? and how many do you have alltogether?
anyway, #RIPHansGruber Cheering up will take long...

I'll be trying for Three With Deep Roots as well. About time, methinks. I'm still a bit on the fence with Cheese in the trap as well. For some reason I think my staying depends on how the second lead female thing pans out.
My first Alan Rickman movie was Close My Eyes. My second Closetland. And of course Bowie has always been there. Not sure when he entered my mental world.
So far, am sad about the deaths but not devastated. Not sure why there's a lack of devastation. Not that I want to be devastated..but yeah, wondering why I'm kinda at peace about that. Might be i'm at that age where death -- esp of close friends and older celebs-- is such a normal occurrence. Younger folks wonder why we cry about Bowie when they never heard of him. At the same time, there are other actors much older who are dying or who have died --90 year olds etc-- whom those mourning Bowie never heard of. So it's just the daily occurrence, I think. After a while, death just feels numbing. Once in a while there is this terrifying squeal or overflow of grief and it's like.. oh my! I didn't know this death would devastate me so much. I cried so much when Orson Welles died I thought my heart would break.

yeah, I am not devastated as such, but I really feel for my friends. For them, it was a real loss - but so were Christopher Lee and many people from the movie industry that work behind the screen...
it is not the loss of specific people, but the feeling that it is an end of an era in so many ways.
at the same time, there are positive aspects about this new era, new young and talented singers, but you know, they are not as self-sufficient as the older generation of artists. managers front and back and too much media foam that runs them down shortly... but I guess they´ll grow

Alan Rickman was such a fine actor. i enjoyed his portrayal of Brandon from Sense and Sensibility. Obviously his role of Snape cemented his fame but even before Harry Potter, he was already well respected in British film industry. So sad,,,

Alan Rickman's voice really was a work of art, oh goodness.
(in fact, I actually discovered the charms of one of my other British actor loves* because he could do a pitch-perfect impression of Rickman's voice - talk about greatness leading you to greatness!)
*Tom Hiddleston, if anyone was curious.

I loved Alan Rickman's voice. He had a lot of presence.
Tom Hiddleston's too. He is another one of those intellectual actors. Think he got a first in Classics at Cambridge. Cumberbatch also has a brilliant voice. The latter two are great on stage too.

I think Harry Potter introduced him to a whole other generation. It's not like I hadn't seen him in anything before that, but I just wasn't attentive to who the actor was (because I was too young). And people even younger – who are twenty or younger now – probably would have never heard of Alan Rickman if not for HP.
What I love about the tributes is that he is not just being praised for his wonderful acting but that the heartfeltness of the tributes very much shows how wonderful (kind, generous, good friend) he was as a person.
There are a couple films of his that I had never heard of that thanks to the tributes I'm putting on my to-watch list now (the ghost one, the incest one, the galaxy one).
Best made Korean thing: I love my Korean chopsticks & spoon. I travel with them!

I actually encountered him for the first time as Colonel Brandon in Sense & Sensibility, and couldn't have loved him more. It was so weird to think kind, sweet Colonel Brandon later played, well Snape. But that's the magic of great actors, they can play totally different people and be equally convincing as all of them.
but my Harry Potter fangirl heart loves that some fans decided to leave tributes to their Professor Snape at Platform 9 3/4.

First time I saw Alan Rickman in anything was as Obadiah Slope in the Barchester Chronicles, a BBC production from 1982. He was truly excellent in this show, so unctuous and slimy. Didn't see him again for many years in anything of note, but never forgot that wonderful performance. Very sad to hear of his death.

Glad you're watching Six Flying Dragons! ...... And you know what? It does make sense to watch Tree With Deep Roots. That's what I've been thinking of doing also. Perhaps we'd see it with a new appreciation. Or perhaps a new perspective.
Regarding your question, the first thing that comes to mind is this round, black grill. I don't remember if it has a particular name. You put it over your stove burner, add a little water and you can grill veggies quickly!

If spoilers doesn't bother you then go for it. It 'll help you understand some of the fictional part of SFD. It's very much connected to TWDR.
There is a few changes they made especially with the relationship between Moo-hul and Band Ji. They might make some more changes with Yeon Hee and Jeong Do-jeon too but we will see.

i'm actually wondering if another drama would come after to fill the gap between SFD and TWDR...
i don't think they will include Lee Bang Won rein in the series or the Strife of the Prince.
We are -20 episodes and what? 4 more years of the last king of Goryo..
i think the final part of the drama is going to concentrate on Lee Song Gye taking the throne.
not that i'm bothered, Lee Bang Woo is becoming one of my fav character in this series, when Moo Yul was in tree.

There is basically an unconfirmed project called "Pachunhwang" under head writer Kim Young-Hyun's name.
Plot:
Depicts the friendship and battles of Jung Do-Jun and Yi Bang-Won during the early building process for the Joseon Dynasty. Jung Do-Jun was the most powerful Korean aristocrat and politician of his time, Yi Bang-Won was the fifth son of King Taejo and eventually became King Taejong, the third king of the Joseon Dynasty.
I am almost positive that it's going to be the continuation of SFD. SFD might end with the revolution and "Pachunhwang" will pick up from there.
Jeong Do-jeon and Bang-won's battle didn't really start until after Joseon was established. It took 6 years before Bang-won eliminate Jeong Do-jeon.
I also think it'll cover the early years of his reign up to the point where "The Great Sejong" starts off at.

Drama series title "Pachunhwang" refers to a Chinese proverb referring to the breaking of chaos before the creation of the world and used when someone achieves something that nobody has before.

yeah, I was never a hardcore David Bowie fan but the news of his death was a bit of a jolt to the system. As was the news of Alan Rickman's death - I just sort of assumed they'd be around forever, however illogical and stupid that is.
But I certainly wasn't devastated. The only celebrity deaths that really got to me on a personal level were Heath Ledger in 2008 and Lee McQueen in 2010 - especially the latter. I remember texting the friend who broke the news to me, telling him he was lying because I simply didn't want to believe it. I never knew him personally (duh) but it did make me feel happy sometimes, to live in a world where someone's mind could come up with the kind of things his did.
As for Korean-made products in my house: My favourite ones are our chopsticks - they're typical metal ones, and they have a lovely floral engraving on the handles. They're probably the most elegant eating implements I have ever owned, and I love using them for rice, noodles and even, on occasion, pasta.

January 15, 2016 at 8:57 AM
yeah, it felt extra unreal to me because my generation knew him first as a teen heartthrob and only then as the acclaimed young actor he became, it sounded extra unbelievable to think that the boy from 10 Things I Hate About You was gone at such a young age. If he'd lived, I have no doubt he'd be tearing up those awards left and right - for all the noise about Leonardo DiCaprio (another tween-era crush of mine, pre-Heath), in terms of raw talent, Ledger was the real thing.
I feel sad that David Bowie and Alan Rickman are gone, but they lived long and full lives, so it's something worth celebrating.
but when an artist dies young, it's hard not to feel bad. Amy Winehouse was another one - she was just a year older than me, but I admired a lot about her and was rooting for her to recover. It was even sadder to know she died as a result of trying to quit drugs, she wanted to live :/ And I will never forget the day I was told McQueen was dead, it sounds melodramatic but it really felt like a light had gone out of the world.

I wasn´t a fan of Amy, but it makes me annoyed and angry and helpless that talented people are being, how to say, all the matters with drugs and the media is only after the scandal, it feels like vultures pushed them over the cliff and I am just....ugh! They not only died too early, but unfairly! in a very regrettable way! and I mean, it could have been prevented if people weren´t so blinded by the glitter on the surface and just saw the human being beneath it. same was with michael Jackson, I felt angry and vengeful. Unjust, unfair!

Alexander Mcqueen and Robin Williams hit me really hard. I think it was because they were both so talented, young and both chose to end their lives themselves.
The "celeb" death that hit me the hardest and still hurts was Jeff Buckley's. Oddly enough, I didn't discover him till the early 00's in the midst of a terrible depression and his music was such a soothing balm. When I found out he had died tragically at a young age, I mourned so deeply like it had just happened.
Anyway, I really do think we will be losing alot of older legends in the next few years. I'm bracing myself for it.

I think suicides always leave a huge burden of guilt on the people around them, and to a lesser extent on the people who knew and loved them more indirectly through their work (as most fans do)
I don't have a creative bone in my body, and chose a rather prosaic profession pretty early on, but the existence of people like McQueen and Williams made me feel better about the world in general - just knowing that it contained people with such incredible minds. And coming face to face with that work just drives home the point even more - I went to the V&A's McQueen exhibition last summer, and it really did feel like getting a peek into the mind of the man himself. The sheer audacity involved in the conception of some of the things i saw.... it really was art.

about Robin Williams: people ask why would he, but they cannot imagine the pressure on a person who is creative and senses that he has to function 150% to be himself. everyone thinks talented people dont feel pressured or doubt themselves, they aleays think talented ones are carefree and relaxed. but this is wrong - they doubt their abilities the most already, they are their own worst critics, and if you add a sickness to THAT it just explodes. there were long discussions of depression and different reasons behind why people just cant take it anymore, I compared depression to a battle. you think if you destroy the army of darkness, it is over. but what really makes people quit is walking over the endless field of dead bodies left from that battle. it might seem like there is nothing to rebuild. thats what gets them...

January 15, 2016 at 3:13 PM
yes, that's part of why I felt so bad as a fan about McQueen especially - the idea that by admiring their work, we were putting unbearable pressure on them to turn out more of it, at a pace that perhaps they as human beings couldn't deal with. Or that we valued the products over the person. Which is a really somber note to reflect on.

you know, I was SO SURE that was the ship even though I'd been Taekked long ago.
There's going to be some raging in the recap comments, that's for sure. Or grief. But I thought the show made a really valid point about it - he NEVER spoke up, even though he knew or guessed that Deok-sun liked him, and he liked her.
It's a case of a chance at connection being lost because of pride or hesitation, and if Jung-hwan had spoken up straight up even once, I'd be mad at the writer too - even Yoon-jae managed to confess to Shi-won (and that confession scene still gives me goosebumps). But Jung-hwan just doesn't, and in the meantime Deok-sun's own feelings change.
but I think they really did intend Jung-hwan to be the husband at first, based on the adult Jung-hwan's mannerisms. They only started changing that after jumping ship to Taek.

I dont mind complaints and raging, but the JungPal fans on twitter and other places are being just downright immature, hateful, vicious brats at this moment, who are wishing for Taek to die or be kidnapped and say it is out of the blue, when it actually isnt, or that it is REVENGE towards the fans, oh cmon chill.
first of all, it is not for fans to decide, it is the writer and PD
second, I am not a shipper nor do I have anythings strictly against JungHwan, but he is not overwhelming me as a character eiether (I like JungBong much better!)
third, hating a character or saying if it wasn´t Park Bo Gum - yeah, well you are right about that, if it wasn´t PBG I don´t think Taek would have been as nuanced and as appealing, but no, decisions won´t have been made just because of him.
fourth, vicious fans are ruining it for themselves. sit back and enjoy the show, accepting whatever events is part of watching experience. don´t be half-laced.

Choi Taek!! , we have 1 more ep tomorrow
I just start 4 episode of Nirvana in fire and I watched it twice,
I want to understand it better, I hope it have a better ending, so far, I would watch it if I have strength but it kind of addicting
I finish bu bu jing xin and that make me worried about the Korean adaptation,
It feels like the whole show driven by these chemistry, this simple gesture and the way they saw each other.
The story is intriguing but for me, the cast is what sold the show.
Those simple smile, slighty looking at each other, knowing things that nobody knew,
the 4th prince really tried my patiente, 'he makes me want to try kabedon'
I hope the remake gonna be good cause I really have problem with bad remake,
honeslty, the only reason this drama has to be remake is to replace the CGI effect,
but it altready decided.
The feeling reminds me OOku: the inner chamber the 12 ep one with Masato Sakai, it's also one hell of cry fest for me.
This week also has one of the best duet of ep 41 king oas mask singer,

aaah farinelli should snatch the throne today, still sad that General Kim fail in ep 38

Happy Friday! This is me for the 3 day weekend :))
A few things-
1. Our trash oppa Jung Woo is getting married tomorrow(16th). You might know already- lady is Kim Yoo-mi who was awesome Jin-sook in Cruel/Heartless city. Hope she can land on another cool role. I know people didn't like her in her last drama 'Can we love'. I first saw her in the drama 'Sangdo' (by PD Lee of DaeJangGeum). I remember she was so tall that she looked odd (I had same impression with Lee Yo-won. Who knew the day would come when EVERYBODY is tall- like now).
2. There are several sites which did voting on 'Who is the man- UNamRyu or UNamTaek?'. All cases had more votes for UNamRyu (Ryu JY/Jung-hwan is the husband). On Naver survey which 254,000 people participated, Jung-hwan got 57.8% of votes, and 42.2% went to Taek (as of 15th 1pm K-time).
btw (SPOILER: Taek and Sun-duk's dreamlike kiss was not dream after all!)
Jo Jin-woong (Our beloved warrior Moo-yeol in 'Tree with deep roots') said that he cried the most while watching Reply series in the 'Signal' press conference which will be aired after Reply 88
Guess what? I can totally imagine that- He looks such a soft-hearted bear.
3. I love not-plastic-beautiful-but-has-acting-chops actresses filling the TV screen these days-
-Han Ye-ri/Yoon Rang-Cheok Sa-gwang in SFD,
-Park So-dam/Song-yi in 'Because it's the first time',
-Kim Go-eun/Seol in 'Cheese in the trap'.
I wonder if this new welcome trend will continue. Is there any new trend you want to see coming?
4. Two more dramas that I was watching ended.
-Imaginary cat: I could see Yoo Seong-ho with his cat/Bok-gil forever. Such a cute show, and I love the BG's voice (Han ye-ri/female warrior CSG in SFD - how talented is she!)
-Sweet and Saveage family: WTH with the final two episodes? So disappointed with this drama. Adult casts were so good.
Anyway I am looking forward to new batch of dramas starting next week!

Oh my gosh! Do I dare watch the final episode of Sweet Savage? I'm like.. I understand hero's conscience and all but we do not want him to be the only one getting into self-questioning? True, he's been an abuser as well as a victim. But let's be fair. We have seen him being victimized far more than we saw him being a thug. It's not about the victim's guilt right now (which is fine as I said) but it's about the chairman's family (the abuser's) also coming to terms with their own guilt. Shouldn't they also reflect?
So then.. should I watch the finale, or will I be screaming my head off in anger?
Maybe I should just catch up on Imaginary Cat to calm my wrath against SSV?

your point 3 v- thank goodness! can we hope that the actors´ individuality will not get ruined by plastic surgery in the future? cause now they see that if they want to cast someone for a very original character, they also need originality in that person (also Jung-Hwan!)
or just people whose beauty comes from something else than perfect face. Like a smile that can stop a train (Bogummy! but he is cutiepie anyway )
I remember the argument about Yoo Ah In´s ears - somebody said "do something about them!" OMG they are a trademark! They are his fingerprint! why do people obsess on "fixing" others when there is no need? it is so insulting.

I'm so happy for Trash Oppa getting married, I liked Kim Yu-mi a lot in Cruel City so I think they'll make a lovely couple.
And I guess all bets are off on 1988 and we know who the husband is going to be..... it's certainly not who I expected at the start! But it was who I was rooting for, which flew in the face of all previous Answer Me husband hunts.
Count me in as another fan of the new wave of talented young actresses. I hope the trend of these girls getting leading roles continues. (and a trend I would like to see in kdrama is casting better actors, in general. Not that it's ever going to happen, but I'd rather see kdramas cast on the basis of acting ability than idol status/how many endorsements a candidate for a role has.

and even if there are idol actors they better be serious about learning and impoving and work hard on their skills instead of riding on popularity. nothing against a talented idol who is actually putting in effort and taking advice from the more experienced.

Really? I loved him in Me Too, Flower and King of Baking. Then he was a member of the 26 episode Barefoot Friends where we really got to know more about him (and he did a tribute song to his grandfather called grandpa's bicycle which was so tenderhearted). On to FBND (Enrique!!) and The Prime Minister and I. Also, didn't he have a tiny role in Secret Garden? Anyhoot, love his adorable traditional small town childhood/education self and can't wait to see him again, out of the Army and in top ship-shape :)

He was really good in Baker Kim and Flower Boys Next Door - and he was good in Me Too, Flower, though a bit miscast.
I was really surprised at how he was like on variety shows - he got teased a lot for having pastel coloured sheets in his bedroom (which incidentally, was full of books). Seemed really shy and sweet.

After several months of absence, I managed to binge-watch Korean movies again.
Veteran
Entertaining, entertaining, entertaining. No wonder it's called film of the year. You can watch several times without getting bored. The plot is actually simple and nothing new, but, you know, Ryu Seung Wan's directing has been eye candy. That, plus the ruthlessly handsome Yoo Ah In.
The Throne
Korean selection for Academy Awards. But, well, I don't know. It's good, tragic, but I couldn't feel the suffocating rice chest. And YAI here is almost the same with YAI in Veteran.
The Priests
Yeah, Kang Dong Won! Kim Yoon Seok! I like it. I'm not a Catholic, so it's interesting to see how exorcism is done. Plus, KDW speaks Latin. Plus, I've got to hear him sing again. Ok I'm a bit biased.
But the biggest surprise is actually Park Sodam. Good actress. Hope she will only go up from here.

Hello all:
Let's see: Writing, Reviewing, Anticipating good things and simultaneously dreading bad things. Fighting off a resurgence of PTSD. Looking out at a dreary winter sky. It's majorly, bitterly, cold.
Dramas:
Moorim School: I like it. I'm pretty picky with idol dramas and kid dramas. I just have to be in the mood to deal with all the kiddie angst, esp kiddie angst about musician idols. But this drama hit the sweet spot for me. Whether it goes light or dark, I'm in for the ride I think.
Cheese in the Dark: It's okay. Am liking the second lead guy a lot. He's accessible and his story arc is the most important to me.
Six Flying Dragon: Awaiting the topknot and the dissolution of the revolution. What a seriously good drama! I shall have to watch Tree With Deep Roots now.
Sweet Savage Family: Trying not to be angry as I prepare to watch the finale. I just knew there'd be one of those annoying easy forgiveness redemption arc for Chairman and his family, and seriously..if GiBum becomes "good" simply to please his daughter I am going to scream.
Remember: Kinda dreading watching this. I'm liking it but wow, evil is so present. And when one considers documentaries such as Making of a Murderer then one knows all kinds of evil is perpetrated by supposed law enforcement. Is my poor heart going to be harrowed for the next remaining episodes? I seriously can't stand injustice.
That's why I'm finding it hard to watch Glamorous Temptation. Why is it so high in the ratings? How can Korean Ahjummas bear the stress of all that unrelenting injustice and untruth?
All about My Mom: Seriously!!!! I am so uncaring now about mom's sudden diagnosis of terminal lung cancer. Yep, I loved Mom and all but right now I seriously do not care because organic story dropped out of this drama a long time ago. Yes, yes, all storytelling is manipulation but this is just off the charts annoying.
Jang Yeong Sil: Really liking this and loving to see how stuck in time and their worldview the court and the king was. Love the educational aspect of it. Kinda wanting our hero to get to the court already.
Awaiting, Descendants, Signal, Madame Antoine.
Happy weekend, all.

With me, it's more about fitting in a drama. I figure some new dramas are rolling in next week so it's either now or after I've figured out which of the new dramas I will actually watch. Since I've pretty much stopped watching All about Mom on the weekends, I'm lucky enough to have my weekends free. So I hope to start this weekend.

Assuming the writers stick to the mythology they created in Tree, you might want to wait until after SFD as Tree will contain a lot of spoilers. However, I would highly recommend Tree in general - while I was a bit underwhelmed with the final episodes, there is some extraordinary writing in it, especially if you like compelling intellectual argument.

I can see Dad dying but being vindicated after death. Or losing his memory and not realizing he is vindicated. Or being free but now with the memory of a dead or mentally-destroyed son. I want a happy ending. I refuse to go through a harrowing drama just to end up with sorrow. Especially now that I'm trying to get my strength up to see Sweet Savage Family.
I so wish so many Kdramas wouldn't swing so wildly between kdrama forgiveness and utter nihilism where the victimized are never fully restored to happiness. It's like.. are the powers that be so powerful or is money and destructive wealth fated to be forgiven because it's all part of some weird destiny. These are moments when I want some theological/cultural expert to explain this kind of stuff to me.
Thank you. Am doing better. Writing. And the post about Alan Rickman felt like a poem attempting to come through so I allowed the creative flow. Lots to do today but somehow not in the mood. Wanting to spend all day writing poems instead of working on the novel i'm supposed to be writing. Seriously hating deadlines.

"...where the victimized are never fully restored to happiness."
I'm guessing that it may stem from a belief that happiness doesn't happen as a pure, isolated state, if that makes any sense. It's hard-won, it's a struggle not to lose it and it includes, more likely than not, emotional pain ..... if there is some sort of trauma or tragedy involved, then you have the memory of this added. In other words, happiness goes hand-in-hand with pain, intertwined.
Then there's the issue of having baddies/enemies involved. As much as we may dislike it, in real life it is true that the bad guys win for a variety of reasons and kdramas are quite adept at not shying away from this reality.
Hang in there with those deadlines!

Perhaps. I just hate the way the dramas have so many protags turn away from judging the one who has wounded them to judging their own lives. It's very -- too-- look at the beam in your own eye. I suspect the Korean spirituality with its mix of Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Muism, can lead to this wholesale forgiving of personal friends who betray and acceptance of larger evil. It's like..really?
Am trying to meet those deadlines but have been surfing the net all day. I did finish a review though. So... something done I guess.

You are doing better than I am - I am not watching a single k-drama ATM. A J and a C one, but that is it. Just kind of burned out on the long string of kid/high school and formula-driven romance shows.
I gave up on All About My Mom a long time ago - I was actually starting to get creeped out by that almost incestuous mother/son thing. Glamorous Temp also gave up on - after her leaving/not leaving the house about the 5th time it was starting to feel like Groundhog Day.
I may pickup on Moorim - it sounds a bit different, but waiting for at least 4 episodes to be subbed. Aside from that, it is feeling dry as a desert out there.

The reason I like Moorim is because it's youthful, vaguely J-drama school esque without being all regular teenaged angsty.
All about Mom is being downright ridiculous. I kinda raised my eyebrow when the abusive Ex husband just left the picture after feeling guilty. That seemed so utterly untrue and lacking in awareness of how cruel selfish and irrational abusers are. I got so annoyed the writer couldn't follow through and wondered if KBS had sent word to keep everything sweet and weekend.
Then that stupid accident at the construction site. Then the incestuous single mom CEO gets back into a relationship with the guy who dumped her. Oh my God! "long-suffering" viewer that I am I just wanted to scream.
Then there was the creepy thief who falls in love with oppa.
But when Mom got lung cancer, I thought, "Oh stop this idiocy, writer-nim! There is no organic storytelling in this work at all. Just pilling on stuff and not working out anything in the plot. I'm cold now. I don't care if Mom dies and gets impaled. I've lost all patience. Even if she comes back as a ghost, I will not care.
Glamorous Temptation is ridiculous but it has one storyline..just one. Which irks me. ONE stupid storyline with two or three events happening all over again. Caught, threatened, escape, caught, threatened, escape. Punctuated every once in a while with possible murder and death. John endures it I think because he has more patience with silliness. I'll jump back into it when the repetition stops.

Hi OP friends!!
I'm still on a drama coma and haven't been able to watch many kdramas since 2015 has been a bummer. However, I've been digesting here and there on some few dramas and 2016 looks promising!!
Remember (SBS)- I love all the actors and characters, heroes or villains etc. but I hate how its dragging and stretching the plot going off pace as it goes along. Why can't the writers make Jin-Woo uses his abilities for the greater good.
The Beautiful You (MBC)- All the craziness I missed from a typical daily kdrama like "Temptation of Wife" that makes the fights in here almost seem comical. The family/relationship nuisance is really annoying here that I can't stop watching.
All About My Mom (KBS)- im happy that this drama is ending soon. It was a mess I shouldnt have brought myself into because of the cast. Nonetheless, KBS Daesang was well deserved for mommy. The oldest hyung/oppa relationship is more fun~
6FD (SBS), Reply 1988 (tVn)- I'm behind about 2 episodes. I really want to enjoy it. But dont have many of those times where I can soak an entire episode in without any breaks. Enjoying them so much that I dont care anything else beside Lee Bang Ji and Yoon Hee. And the Reply parents.
Anyways thx dramafans. Love this OP.

Hello beanies..
-Cheese in the Trap: I'm completely hooked. I just love this show. It's been a long time since the last time I found kdrama characters and their lives so engaging. But somehow, Seol's college live just resonate so much with mine. And it's nice that they don't set Inho up to fall for Seol from their first meet, instead Jung become the biggest reason they keep interacting. Can't wait for the next 2 eps.
-Reply 1988: Seriously, they don't need to drag that love triangle until the last week. But since the finale is almost here... I just want you to be happy, Deoksun~ah.
-Moorim School: I guess I was spoiled by all the good shows that airing right now (like CiTT, 6FD, and Reply), but I just can't get past all that sloppy directing and bad acting. And however much I love fantasy story, this drama is far too cheesy for my liking. Maybe I'll just read recaps to know how the story progress.

Well, the "second lead with ulterior motives who falls for the female lead eventually" is not exactly original, but it's better than many other stereotypes. And, yes, college is a little bit more than a theme-park here.
Hehe. I'm not sure about it.
On the one hand, I don't care about Deok-sun and the triangle too much when the show has so many much more interesting characters and relations to offer. (Seriously, I find Jung-hwan so much more interesting when he interacts with his brother than when he pretends to be cool around Deok-sun.)
On the other hand, it has been dragged and stalled enough by now. Nothing happened in four years? Like, at all?

I've been obsessed this week. All week i've been like - it has be CT it makes sense.

Hi all,
I just finished watching Answer Me 1988 E19 and... *cries*
But I still have hope ... #TeamJunghwan
Sorry, but I didn't feel any chemistry between the couple in the other ship. I feel like I should be happy for them, but I feel nothing watching their "sweet" scenes together. Anyway, waiting for the recaps tomorrow and the final episode tomorrow night.
On the other hand, I've watched Cheese in the Trap whenever I can and lost count how many times I've watched the first four episodes. Crack drama of the year (unless something changes in AM1988). But seriously, the chemistry between Jung and Seol is so good that I blush (when I don't think anything can make me at my age) thinking about them just holding hands. There are also a lot of scenes showing their hands that's just lovely (thanks PD-nim).
I can't wait until Monday. And hopefully they would also release OST Part.3 which would include the great songs I've heard as BGM in episodes 3 & 4.
Too bad that that-site-that-shall-not-be-named are the ones doing the subs for AM1988. Unless something good happens in E20 *crosses fingers*, I'd be watching CITT first even if the subbed episodes come out at the same time on Tuesday.

I am absolutely loving Cheese In The Trap right now, it's really got that drama "stickiness" it seems because I find myself thinkibg about it randomly while going about my week. Kim Go Eun is a revelation and I'm seriously in love with Hong Seol's fashion choices. I'm also rather intrigued by how the rest of the drama is going to unfold.
Six Flying Dragons is still going strong it seems, although I'm taking a break from it for a while so that I binge-watch 4-6 episodes in one sitting. I find that the narrative sweep is better captured when watching several episodes consecutively. I have to admit that Cheese is kind of eclipsing my SFD fervour at the moment!
I saw some mention of Chinese dramas like Nirvana in Fire and Bu Bu Jing Xin - would love to hear of any views on what those are like and how they might compare to sageuk. Pariticularly curious to see how Scarlet Heart is going to turn out...

I have no words for how much I love Seol's style in Cheese in the Trap - and I really do mean style, not styling.
Kim Go-eun carries it all off so naturally and unselfconsciously, there's something about her that reminds me of Gong Hyo-jin, oddly enough. They both wear casual outfits with an air of never having to put any thought into it, which really makes the outfits imo.
and I really love how Seol's clothes get chosen to set off her red hair.

I just watch 4 ep of nirvana, it's has lot of fantasy fighting style (like tge almost flying) but I think the vibe is kinda like SFD, political and have lots od fighting scene, but don't take me too much cause again I only watch 4 ep.
So saeguk definitely has the same background for it, like throne war, sccheme, the concubine and their son, princess.
Scarlet heart is really romantic type of saeguk but it's really about her story, how she fall in love and how she works in that era. The romance doesn't feel like saeguk, it wasn't a forbidden love or mistake for guy identity to make them close or love in different status. It has politic in it, it has friendship, it has hardwork. It kinda remind me of Princess Man, it tells love in different way. Idk any saeguk like scarlet heart when the girl freely show who she loves to the guy and it respected by the guy, even it involve more than one guy. TL:DR it's a good reverse garem
Someone can add if my explanation is not enough

Started NIF on a whim, didn't think much of the first episode but I was totally hooked by the third! I really enjoyed all of it :) I thought the editing could have been better (like the music scenes where they play an instrument and the sound doesn't match up lol) but besides that it really surprised me how much I looked forward to watching it. If we would have had more time, my husband and I would have probably finished it in a few days. Go watch it!

All I'm watching at the moment are Cheese in the Trap and Moorim School. I ended up dropping Remember and Answer Me 1988 I just got bored with Remember and with 1988 the further we got into the less I liked it.
Cheese in the Trap- I love this. I love Kim Go-eun she should be in everything from now on.
Moorim School- I like it way more than I thought although I'll say it's not for everyone. In fact it might be one of things that the vast majority of people don't like but develops a small but devoted fan base. It might help if you came to dramas by way of anime.

the funny thing is, I did come into dramas by way of a sideways drift from manga/anime and especially shoujo, I'm a lifelong fantasy fan (both literature and movies), possibly my favourite kdrama genre ever is fantasy sageuks...... and Moorim School feels like the drama equivalent of chewing very stale rotis to try and get them to go down the gullet.
I do wish its writers and casting directors had been a little bit better, that would have actually made it campy fun instead of cringe.

I'm wondering if it's possible to suffer from a job version of Stockholm Syndrome (i.e. knowing your job is awful and works you like a dog for peanuts, but sticking with it out of fear you don't deserve or won't be able to get anything better).
Drama-wise, I'm really enjoying Cheese in the Trap - thank god for Park Hae-jin and Kim Go-eun. because they're just so natural in their roles even if Yoo Jung scares and intrigues me at the same time.
Not really too into anything else at the moment - Moorim School would basically require me to lobotomise myself to enjoy it despite the shirtless Lee Hyun-woo.
The exception is Answer Me 1988 for the parents, though that kiss in episode 17 gave me a glimmer of interest in a potential Deok-sun romance for the first time, it was the perfect balance between sweetness and intensity (I still don't think Taekie is the husband though, and that's fine as long as we get lots of Three Moms time and Sun-woo/Taek as real brothers - I have been rooting for that ever since the end of episode 12!)

Stockholm syndrome would actually be when you start identifying with your employers and believing they are doing the right thing by working you like a dog and paying you a pittance. Doesn't sound like you are there yet ... so I hope you can persuade yourself to keep looking for something better out there. A bad job rarely gets better. I know. I've had some really bad jobs.

my justification for that is that I have tried, but wasnt the most suitable one for the specific job. there arent many available we are a small country. a potential job often means changing your whole life, moving to another town, and for me who is alone it is not so easy. plus there are people I am taking care of in this town... limits the choices but they cant say I havent tried to leave. 15 times to be precise in general, 3 times that I applied somewhere else.

Re: prospective employers -- sell them on the traits that kept you doing a good job in a bad situation, and what you learned (without dinging your former employer). I guarantee you ... every prospective employer will know it was a bad job without you saying so explicitly. Why? Because every single one of them has almost certainly had a bad job. GOOD LUCK!

All those times when I was watching reply 1988, I thought that the husband is Taek or shall I say that I hoped he is the husband despite of his late introduction. I believe that most viewers fell for JH before Taek was formally introduced and wondered if this late introduction is precisely the writer's or PD's tactics to fool the viewers. i thought Taek's love for DS started much earlier (possibly when they were much much younger)and as he grew older his first love became love of his life, so to speak.so I like to see his devoted love fulfilled.I liked watching his steel of will and concentration when it comes to his games,, there is something quite manly in him even though his face is like a doll and he lacks some skills in everyday life. i think when a man whom most do not consider manly yet starts exhibiting his manly sides, often girls fall for him and DS Was not an exception.
With overwhelming fan base from JH side and their convincing explanation, I thought my analysis must be dead off and I was quite nervous for voicing my opinion.
I hope that we can watch the double wedding for SW-BR and TK-DS! Just like Pride and Prejudice!

Woke up to a very pretty crystal snow ~
What will happen to Infinity Challenge with the panel of MC entertainment experts critiquing and making suggestions? Kwanghee, hang in there! IC highs are so high and lows are so low... that describes most k-entertainment inconsistencies.
Imaginary Cat – where was the “hazardous to your emotional health” warning? Cat star.
Moorim School – I like the attempt at a Harry Potter-esque secret school setting and applaud the choice of Hyungjoon as the formidable dean, but so far the show is a bit lacking on the fantasy and powers elements. High School Love On started out strong but rapidly fizzled in the supernatural element department. (On the other hand, the best part about Gu Family Book was the sparkly fantasy and supernatural elements.) I hope Moorim School writers learn from that and give us a respectable dose of martial arts supernatural powers and a decent story line. Keep the momentum going, Moorim School!
Remember-War of a Son- such a pile of melo, makes money seem so filthy. Jin Woo's obsessively intense single-mindedness and acute memory is scary and burdensome.
Cheese in the Trap -i f one more person says Yoo Jung is not who he seems to be - then who is he? I't s making me nervous.
Looking forward to the last 2 eps of Reply 1988.

Happy OT guys!
I can't believe Alan Rickman is gone *group hug fellow Potterheads*. I know he had portrayed many characters but in my heart, he'll always be the half-blood Prince. He was such a wonderful Snape. He truly captured the character and I can't never imagine any other actor portraying Snape as wonderful as he had. Rest in peace, Rickman.
Drama-wise, aside from watching Cheese in the Trap, I marathoned Let's Eat for a day. . . and well I thought it was good. I might have enjoyed it more if it wasn't for the finale feeling a little too anti-climatic. Still, it was a fun, feel good drama with loads of delicious food and a funny Doo-joon. Also, I didn't mind the long eating scenes. It was not just about the food but I was weirdly fascinated on how the scenes were shot. However, I won't be watching the second season. I'm satisfied with what Let's Eat had given and I probably couldn't handle a drama where the leads ended up in the finale (again).
Up-next on my drama marathon list will be Kill Me, Heal Me then Liar Game then probably Reply 1997. I hope I didn't set my expectations too high and end being disappointed by any of them *fingers crossed*

Guys! I'm dying to share this with someone. Noone near me is as much obssess with kdrama as I am.
Ep 3 of CITT when Seol is depressed by poor marks and walks home by herself, then Jung sees her and calls her but she is listening to music and too occupied to see Jung, so he follows her silently from a distance...
That scene... oh my... I can not even describe how much I love it.
It is 1minute 7 seconds to be exact.
The cinematography is sooooo great... The song... I've been searching but it was not released yet. I dont know the name of it...
The beat of music in sync with Seol' walk. The sunlight flashing thru Seol's hair, the yellow theme of her road from school, her hand tapping while listening to music,... all are spot on. I dont remember how many times I rewatched this scene.
Many people might like the scene becos of Jung... To me, I prefer Seol here. I feel her expressions of "i want to be by myself and hope music heals" or at least that's how I am when I am down.
And is it weird that I want to run after her and hold her hand? That hand tapping thing caught me immediately and since, I can't help thinking about this whole scene...
I guess I'd Jung to impulsively do it. Though my sane part wants him to leave her alone.
Does anybody else love this scene?

I say do it! I was also hesitant to start the drama, since I was Chilbonged the last time so I watched it much later when the drama was already in the middle of its run. Watching it later also help me appreciate the story without having to deal with the who is the husband noise. This is actually the first Reply installment that I can honestly say that I do not care who Deok-sun chooses in the end with the way the show unfolded and presented the two potential husbands. As long as you are well aware that the writers are trolls, don't look too much into what is shown and enjoy it for what it is. I have my hunch, but my guess is just as good as the other people that are not involved in the production.
This installment has a better overall storyline than 1994 (in my opinion, of course), and might even equal my love for 1997. And even if the episodes were longer, it allowed them to focus more on the other people in the neighborhood and you can certainly feel the love among the neighbors and especially the mothers. They are absolutely my favorite part of the drama.

Hi Beanies! I'm a long time reader of Dramabeans but this is my first time posting in five years.
I'm watching Cheese in the Trap and I'm very intrigued by it. I still can't quite figure out if I really do like it but I'm curious and it has my attention. You'll seldom hear me complaining about a story moving too fast, but there were definitely some scenes in this week's episode that felt less organic because the story seemed a little rush. For instance, the fight between the girls would've made more sense if we slowly started seeing Bo Ra's frustration with Seol's tendency to withhold information. Instead, she just blew up at an inopportune time and, instead of sympathizing with both girls, I felt like Bo Ra should've been more understanding after Seol told her what happened.
Anyway, Seo Kang Joon is adorable in this role and I love his interactions with Seol. They're perfectly comfortable with one another and did anyone notice that the parts where Seol talks the most are when In Ho is around? Like when she was nagging at him about his interview clothes. I hadn't heard her speak so many words and so fast in a single scene this week.
Anyway, Reply 1988 is the show that got me out of my little silent cave to start posting. I am absolutely enchanted and in love with this show and this finale weekend is going to drive me crazy. It's going to take every ounce of willpower for me to stay off SNS to avoid spoilers. Although I am partial towards Taek (blame my love for PBG), I would be happy even if the husband was JH, as long as everyone ended up happy. That said, it would be great if DS made the first move. I had thought JH would be endgame but changed my mind when DS noticed Taek on her own. But, with the time jump, who knows what had happened in between and how feelings have changed. I hope that by returning with more maturity, the friends will be able to sort out their feelings and DO something about them. For now, I will just wait for subs and trust that the writers will deliver a satisfactory ending. Hee~ I can't wait for the three moms to make their official family official!!!i

welcome! Reply 1988 is actually a really strong show, but I wasn't too invested in Deok-sun's love line when I thought they were going to do the textbook thing and have her end up with Jung-hwan (and my head says that's still how it's going to do it)...... but at the prospect of Deok-sun liking Taek without having to be prompted into it by her friends, suddenly I find it a whole lot more engaging. It's partly actor chemistry, and partly that it actually brings out something new in the characters when they're together - like realising Taek is a whole lot more adult than we thought, during episode 9.
I hope they don't skimp on Ssangmundong ajumma girlfriends during the last couple of eps though! I have been living for those 3 since the start of the series, and frankly Deok-sun can marry whoever, I am totally satisfied with the show now that Sun-woo's mother is happy. I rooted for her to get to stay with her kids and out of near-destitution, way more than I did for any love line. (other than hers, of course - I rooted so hard for her and Taek's dad, and not just because it produced an adorable united family as a result)

and yes, his dad is the actual best. It's so lovely to see how uniting the two families has made him a happy teddy bear instead of the sad lonely bear we saw at the start of the series. Not to mention, Taek himself looks so much happier and less constantly stressed. And Jin-joo bossing her oppas around is the cutest (I miss the adorable 4 year old version, but I love the mouthy ten-year-old she's grown up to become <3)

I agree...in addition to the kids' friendships, the ahjummas' friendship just leaves such a mark. I'm getting ready to watch the first few episodes again. I love this installment so very much. Originally I'm a JH's team, but after watching ep 17 I was certain it was going to be Taek in the end. I remember one commenter said in the recap, "If JH refuses to play, I can't exactly root for him." In the end I agree with the commenter. JH completely chilbongied himself. He refused to play.

SW's mom and Taek's dad have the cutest loveline and I love that it gave Jin Ju a father who loves and adores her. I aww'ed a little in the scene where SW parked Taek's car for him and told him to go back to the family and Taek just smiled to himself. It was so sweet.
I actually feel like the writers neglected the development of JH's character in the middle of the drama while Taek's character continued to grow and surprise us with his maturity. So while JH was stuck in his secret crush, I started rooting for Taek more. Like you mentioned, I do think part of it is the chemistry between the actors. Those adorable BTS's are evidence that they have adorable chemistry!

Yoo Seung-ho made me cry twice in one effing day. I still feel horrible.
With Imaginary cat in the morning and Remember in the night....ugh I've never cried so hard during a show!
Remember is supposedly at it's half way mark now but damn the show hurts so bad. SO BAD. I still haven't recovered.
SPOILER ALERT!
The thing what got to me most about Dad's death is that it happens in real life. There are so many times when actually innocent people have died in Jail. I felt so sorry for our gang and especially Jin-woo ugh.
This is the first time I've wished it but damn Nam Gyu-man should be tortured and killed for what he's done and his dad too. >.< ;_;

In know, it's almost too much having Seung Ho in two tearjerkers at the same time. His eyes, his expressions - so heartbreaking. Man, like how very, very bad I felt for Harry in I Miss You, what a broken, tragic character.

Tried Moorim's school/institute/whatever, gave it up again. Cheese and B-movie action is great, but the terrible and inconsistent acting simply doesn't add up.
The acting in Remember is better, of course, but unfortunately it's not good enough either. And the plot writing for the setup episodes has been really awful (maybe it got better afterwards, I'll never know).
Cheese in the Trap
Still a rather bland rom-com, but the sets are great, some of the acting is worth watching. I warmed up a bit to Show-Seol now that we have seen a little bit more from the character.
Reply 1988
Episode 17 was absolutely fantastic (apart from the somewhat loose ending). Episode 18 was great.
The only thing I hate about this show? They cast pearls before swines. All people are talking about is the completely irrelevant question about who that guy in the interview section is (who appeared for 2 minutes or something).

I feel the exact same way about Moorim - I'm exactly the type of person its fans insist you have to be in order to appreciate it (huge manga/anime fan, love fantasy, love a good cheesy B-movie).... but this is not cheese or camp done right. It lacks the self-awareness for that.
(and I know we are conditioned to expect little and forgive much in high school dramas, but the acting here is - barring Lee Hyun-woo - terrible. Jang Yoo-jin delivers her lines basically the exact same way as she did in Grapevine a year ago, but what a difference the setting of a good drama makes...)

On their own, I don't even think the acting is that terrible (except for Hongbin). The combination of all four of them doesn't make sense though. And Lee Hyun-woo is not doing any better than the others. I personally blame the director here.

yeah, I've seen worse acting in dramas that intended me to believe this was the best they could do.
This is not one of Lee Hyun-woo's best performances, but he is certainly doing better than the others for one simple reason - he manages to make Shi-woo feel like a real person and not a walking caricature, even though his backstory is, on paper, as cheesy as anyone else's. The others could be worse, but they feel like cartoons come to life. He doesn't.

You are right, and that's why I feel that Lee Hyun-woo's performance is actually worse than those of the others (except of Hongbin). Seo Ye-ji overacts in a way that might be appropriate in a manga-style adaption. Unfortunately for her, she is the only one among the leads, but she fits the frame of the show. Jeong Yoo-jin is in a different kind of manga-adaption (teenage mystery). Lee Hyun-woo tries to give his character some kind of melodrama gravitas that is utterly inappropriate no matter what.
I don't think that these actors actually came up with these extreme ideas on their own. That's why I blame the director.

the thing is, it actually feels like the director and writers want us to take the show seriously, cheesily-staged fights and all. Which is why they're giving us a hero played straight and like a person.
Seo Ye-ji's character is every kdrama high school Candy ever, but the drama seems to want to ignore the obvious fact that this is a massive cliche, and please behave like you can't predict exactly how this is going to go. She's doing her best, but there's not much to do there.

I have to admit, I struggle with this lack of consistency a lot. "Moorim's" is worse than "Kill me heal me" in this respect. In "KMHM", it felt like the director wanted to do something and just failed to deliver. In "Moorim's ", it feels like the director simply doesn't care at all.

Re: Moorim.
See, I can forgive bad or imperfect Acting from newbies. They're learning..and they have to show their emotions, weakness, etc in front of everyone. I'm not so patient with veterans. (Ah, gag concert.) It's very hard to act when one knows one might be slammed by strangers. In all my reviews I avoid slamming young artistes.. they are growing. We all are. Let it go. For me, story is what matters. And logic. And hopefully good directing. But I can forgive amateur directing...again if it's a newbie. Doing one's craft with the whole world watching is a difficult thing.

Well, you are a better person than I am. If you are a lead actor in a prime-time show, lack of experience or youth is no excuse (heck, I frequently complain about those horrible child-actors in K-dramas). Neither Lee Hyun-woo nor Seo Ye-ji are particularly young or inexperienced, btw, not enough to account for their performances anyway.
If you still lack experience, gather some. If you cannot handle the pressure of prime time lead actor exposure, well, do something smaller.
But I think in the case of "Moorim's", these are not the main issues. All of them (except for Hongbin) have shown that they are much better than in their current roles. Hence, I blame the director.

Not about being a better person but i'm very aware of public humiliation and that celebs are human. Even lead actors suffer hurt. I just think the world has gone cruel and we say such cruel things about people, feeling we have the right and freedom to say so. These people try to entertain us. And they're young. Especially the kids. That kinda stuff is very hard to overcome. So, for me, I avoid judging like that. Because actors show their naked selves. Directors and screenwriters, on the other hand, aren't on screen and they don't work alone. So when a script is ridiculed, it's a group thing: everyone shares the blame and the pain. But acting...well, it's difficult.

Carole, you're much kinder than Jon or I would normally be. I'm inclined to excuse children, and those not performing professionally - but getting the opportunity to act in a lead role on prime time is a gift, and a fairly well-paid one at that.
This isn't community theatre or a film school student project, it's a professional acting job, and a certain baseline level of competence (and speaking up about the lack of that competence, as the case may be) is not an unreasonable expectation to have of the people who get to perform it. I'm not sure why actors' feelings have to be spared from all criticism of their efforts. no matter how poor - for every bad actor who scores a major role in a major drama like this, there are dozens of better ones who've likely been passed over. Giving the bad ones a pass is basically condoning incompetence, especially after some of them have been acting for several years/several projects and still aren't up to the mark.

Finished watching "Buzzer Beat" in 2 days. I'm going to miss Naoki-Riko. Wonderful drama that has a simple love story. Highly recommend this if you want something easy and breezy, beautiful J-drama. There are cute scenes of OPT. I like how they started off as friends and gradually became lovers and supported each other to achieve their dreams.
I now need a new drama that has cute doses of OPT like 'Buzzer Beat'.
Only Kdrama that I've been watching is still "I have a lover". None of the current kdramas interest me at all. I hope the later half of 2016 will offer better Kdramas.
Happy Friday everyone. :)

Watched up to episode 2 in Cheese in the Trap and I think I'll drop it. Might give it another episode or two but probably not. I just don't think the acting is up to par for the concept of the webtoon to work--I say acting, but Kim Go-eun seems to be the only person doing any of that. I mean, for me, the whole point of the story was to show people navigating social acceptability while struggling with subversive elements of their personality and feelings, which come out through insincerity and microagressions. In that sense it reminded me a lot of sageuk lol--nobody can say what they mean and everyone has to maintain a facade of politeness while their frustrations boil over, and the interpersonal conflicts are are often carried out through sneaky proxy wars. For this to work, however, there has to be some semblance of nuance in the performances--because while these characters aren't exactly complicated, when they're are played straight, in monotone, there's no freaky descent into solipsism and everything feels irrational and exaggerated and just plain silly. Which is what's happening here.
Caught up to episode 4 in Jang Yeong-sil. *SPOILERS FOR JANG YEONG-SIL* Right now it feels like it has split personalities: half of the show is about the political ramifications of astronomy in Taejong's court and the remnants of Goryeo loyalists vs. Taejong's desire to legitimize his new dynasty, and half of the show is about Yeong-sil, the amazing genius science whiz who somehow manages to squeeze all his pesky slave work in between making unprecedented advances in astronomy (for Joseon at least lol), constructing breathtakingly intricate gizmos two or three times over, and cooking up with an elaborate escape plan reminiscent of the Ewok's fight with the Empire in Return of the Jedi. Half of this show is okay, half is beyond ridiculous. idk, when you feel like a show would be better without the titular character...I'll hold out hope till Yeong-sil gets to Hanyang and the two sides of the story combine, but yeah. I had some hope after the second episode that there would be some sense of reality, but after episodes 3-4...not so much.
It doesn't feel like the system has been beaten into Yeong-sil in anyway--the show pays lip service to his status (to the end he calls his father "naeuri"), but in the end, it's like he's impervious to it. He never questions his specialness, he can sluff off work whenever to go hang out in his magical astronomy hut, he has no problem talking back or even down to his abusive, oppressive masters, and even the man who had no problem murdering his mama for no good reason doesn't feel like he's allowed to kill Yeong-sil after he tries to, y'know, stab him (!?). And when Yeong-sil plans to escape, he never even thinks of bringing his friend with him--possibly because he's on the dim, submissive side--ie, he actually seems to have internalized his slavery and lives the life of the slave (well two slaves,...

...well two slaves, considering he's always covering Yeong-sil's butt). So instead of watching someone rise above slavery, and therein being led to question the institution on a broader level, I feel like we're being told that Yeong-sil personally is just too special to be a slave. Which is pretty hollow, to say the least. I get that this isn't Chuno and that in the end it's not about slavery, but taking the time to critique slavery as an institution instead of acting like your hero is just too cool for school would be nice.

I made it through eps 3 and I haven't gone back. I was waiting for you to see if it has gotten better.
It's not a fantasy sageuk so I was expecting more. Something rooted in reality based on it's theme but it raised my blood pressure with the ridiculous over the top abuse for ridiculous reasons and sometimes for no reason at all.
SIG is not my favorite when it comes to sageuks (I know I'm all alone here). It felt like he is sleepwalking through this role (shoot me).
Let me know if Merchant is worth going back to.

I'm not feeling Cheese either but I'm giving it a chance.
Yeong Sil... yeah I understand what you're saying. He "suffers" but since we know he'll be with the king soon, a lot of what happens to him seems kinda tropey. And he does seem kinda whiny although he never really whines.
I keep waiting for him to get to the palace. I don't feel the drama feels schitzy though. We see one character understanding the cosmos as scientific and we see another character (with super guilt and a lot riding on the spiritualizing of the stars) as someone stuck in a world where stars have power and show the gods' approval or disapproval. And we have the Crown Prince, the man of science and the court astrologers whose careers depend on walking the fine line.

I really liked the two episodes of cheese, but the 3rd and 4th lacked the umph that I felt after watching the first 2. In fact, all the mishaps in 3rd literally gave me a heartburn cause I just couldn't stand A WHOLE LOT of the characters in that episode. I'm currently planning to watch 5th and 6th, but I might have to stop for the sake of my health, hahahaha :)!

"dan" is the Japanese word for ranks in sports (especially martial arts), derived from Chinese 段/duan (piece, section, step).
It is used in Igo/baduk too, and the word was imported from Japanese into Korean. Professional Igo/baduk players are ranked by a not particularly standardised system of 9 dans, 1-dan to 9-dan, in increasing order of playing strength.
