Mrs. Cop 2 loses entire original cast except Kim Min-jong
by girlfriday
At this point I’m really confused as to why they’re going to call this drama Mrs. Cop 2 when they failed to re-cast everyone from the first season except for Kim Min-jong. But SBS is intent on doing this second season/spinoff of the ajumma cop drama, despite the fact that after original headliner Kim Hee-ae dropped out, co-stars Sohn Ho-joon, Lee Da-hee, and Lee Ki-kwang all said no to Season 2 this week, leaving the new detective team leader without a team to lead.
The second season is trucking on though, and with Kim Sung-ryung (Queen’s Flower) signed on as the new Mrs. Cop, Kim Min-jong has agreed to reprise his role as the section chief she’ll work for. Kim Min-jong had a loveline with Kim Hee-ae’s character in the first season, so I wonder if they’ll write in a breakup or avoid romance altogether this time.
Kim Sung-ryung will play a new character to the franchise, an FBI-trained elite detective who comes in to take over the violent crimes team when Kim Hee-ae’s character takes a leave for personal reasons. That, I understand, but this is the weird part: Since Sohn Ho-joon, Lee Da-hee, and Lee Ki-kwang turned the project down, apparently they’re planning to re-cast new actors to play their original characters. But… why?
Im Seul-ong (Hogu’s Love) is considering an offer to play Sohn Ho-joon’s character, a dogged special-forces trained detective who had a bickering partnership and loveline with Lee Da-hee’s character. I really hope this is just a fleeting half-baked idea and that they end up writing new characters for the new cast, because there’s just no reason to re-cast new people in the same roles. It’s not a soap opera that’s been on for ten years! You already wrote a new heroine, so why not have Kim Min-jong’s character move to a new precinct and get a whole new team of underlings? At this point, you either have to embrace the spinoff angle a la Let’s Eat 2, or you risk confusing your audience.
Mrs. Cop 2 follows I Have a Lover on Saturdays and Sundays beginning in early March.

That's... stupid. I was pretty surprised by a season 2 since I dropped out half way through the first one. It was supposed to be "Female cop juggling her work with raising a kid" until it felt like they forgot about the kid altogether. Then it was just another cop drama. Yawn.

Well, no surprise when almost of the actors quit from the role. I think one of the reason is less appreciation from SBS itself. Last year award(except for Lee Da Hee and Son Ho Joon), almost no more awards for the cast. It's just ridiculous since this drama brings double digit ratings, when one digit rating brings more awards (I Have A Lover). Thanks to KMJ who still want to reprise the role even didn't get any award last year.
It's a pity also, I think. Since almost of the cast fit into the role and I'm into the story. In this case, hope for the writer and PD to make another character, another role, more interesting plot, and more positive-surprising story. Just another saying, for SBS, please judge more attentively or else, your drama is in single digit. Like weekend slot, lose to Reply 1988, which in cable tv station.

I'm sorry, but Kim Hyun Joo alone deserves that daesang, if not Kim Rae Won for Punch. if it weren't for the ratings, Joo Won's Yongpal character is nowhere near the portrayal of KHJ's character(s)!
yes, they should've at least honoured Kim Hee Ae; she portrayed her character to a believable level. it's a little upsetting that she didn't get that recognition. Yet, you're barking at the wrong tree (I Have a Lover). Instead, ask SBS why they had to award Kim Tae Hee, a supposed veteran in the acting field whose compliments until now border on "she's improved a lot". she didn't deserved that excellence award she got.

Buh...b...b...b...but... I was down for the team-ance! And the DoYoung and JinWoo romance if I couldn't get the bickering-comfortable romance of the elder couple! What else should I continue watching this lack lustre show for when the writing disappoints like this...

I was watching 'Yong Pal' last night and remembering all the problems 'Mrs Cop' had with creating a believable squad of detectives. I've seen kdrama after kdrama that describes in intricate detail the legal and illegal machinations of business deals and banking and corporations, yet these same TV producers cannot be bothered to hire an ex-detective to show them how their fake detectives should handle guns and suspects in a police station.

It's just like Let's Eat 2, only Yoon Do Joon (Goo Dae Young) left.
I wonder why SBS have to go through the Season 2? Why not making new drama altogether.

Obviously they´re confident that´s the concept that brought in the ratings, not the cast. I doubt that, the little I watched of it was primarily for the actors.

I think it's fine to do a 2nd season with a similar premise and I do like the actress coming on board as a new lead; but trying to make it a direct continuation is stupid at this point. They should just have the one remaining guy transfer to a new station and help set up a NEW squad with this all-new cast. They can just say they broke up so he moved - it worked well for Let's Eat 2 which is even better than the first season.

Let's Eat 2 was definitely NOT BETTER than the original. Sadly to say they're talking about a Let's Eat 3? They did a travel version with his friends (YAWN) . Then he did the 2 episode mini sageuk with Kim Suel Gi which he should've hired for Let's Eat2 and the writer and PD didn't (stupid) so she did Oh My Ghostess. Please he's not a good actor let alone great one. The cast around the younger actor made him look good and the music and camera angles. it wasn't even getting 10% audience. We had them in the mid double digits for the first season. Couldn't even break 10% sheesh...

My opinion is that Let's Eat 2 is a lot better than Let's Eat 1. I liked Do Joon's character as the central character rather than 1 of 2 boyfriends for the lead woman in the first one.
Considering that Let's Eat is on tvN, ratings in the 1 to 1.5% range are considered typical, with season 1 averaging near the top end of that. Season 2 had average ratings of about 2%, which is a marked improvement.

it's not the same. I love Lee Da Hee the most in Mrs. Cop. She is cute, firm, naive and sexy too.

Oh SBS. This is such a horrible idea. You are just grasping so badly for the ratings Mrs. Cop gave you and this is already looking like a disaster.
It would be better to just do this as a complete spin-off or as a spiritual successor rather then attempting a direct sequel.

it's impossible to do a second season in Korea or third season with the same cast.
I hope a total flop.

So sad that the majority of the original cast is not returning, they worked so well together. Maybe Kim Sung-ryung could have been transferred to another precinct to work since he married someone at the last one??? This could account for the 'new' group and not have to kill off anyone, and leave a child an orphan?

Oh no, LDH and SHJ were sooo adorable together!
Why can't they rename the whole show though, it's just not the same with everyone dropping out. Though I'm excited to see KMJ ahjussi back on screen!
