Moorim School cuts down episode count to 16
by javabeans
It’s only in its third week, but KBS seems ready to give up on its fantasy youth drama Moorim School, and is giving the show an episode cutdown from 20 down to 16. (Some outlets hedge that the broadcaster is in talks, but the majority report this as a done deal. Fans will probably want to prepare themselves to say an early goodbye.)
I’m not sure if it’s a huge blow to get the news now or an act of mercy; the broadcaster cited low ratings and negative reception as their main drivers behind the decision, and maybe ending quicker will be good for all involved. Moorim School’s ratings have stayed between 3.5% to 5.1%, which are low, and the drama about youngsters learning to discover and channel their special supernatural talents at an unconventional school has been generally perceived as a B-list show.
Still, while numbers for Moorim School are low, they’re actually not substantially lower than other dramas KBS has aired in this timeslot: High school rom-com Sassy Go Go logged numbers as low as 2.2% and only topped out at 4.3%, while before it, Strange Daughter-in-Law was in much the same general range, between mostly logging 4% to 5% ratings. Same for quirky cop mystery I Remember You, though at least that one drew critical praise.
There may also be another reason in play, with talk emerging of a dispute between KBS and production company JS Pictures over budget. The producers reportedly asked for additional funds, which KBS refused, leading to a shutdown of filming last week. (Some sources say the filming break was due to cold weather, while others point to the budget dispute.) The drama is set to resume shooting on January 27, when they’ll film material for Episodes 12 and 13. That doesn’t leave them much room to alter the story to fit the new length, and the source explained that the actors are worried about the story changing from the planned trajectory.
(Girlfriday: “Remember the original articles about how this show was going to shift paradigms and burst free of the stagnant drama market?” Javabeans: “Isn’t that mean to point it out now?” Girlfriday: “Do it anyway.”)
The follow-up drama to Moorim School was set to be the Park Shin-yang underdog vehicle Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho, but rather than moving that drama up two weeks, KBS is considering filling the space between with a four-episode short drama called Babysitter, which comes from the Sword and Flower PD Kim Yong-soo.

What were they even going to fill 20 episodes with, more fried food fights?
at least Sassy Go Go came smack in the middle of Korean exam season so it's understandable that its young audience wasn't tuning in, but January is like prime teen drama-time for Korea (God of Study, Shut Up Flower Boy Band, Boys over Flowers, Dream High, even School 2013 all aired during January/finished their runs there). If Moorim can't hack it, it's not hard to see why.

Yeah, but.. Most people I know(including myself), who ALL really -love- Moorim are NOT actually teens(we're ADULTS - and have been for several years); I don't even think the characters on the show itself are actually even necessarily supposed to be teens either -- it seems to me a lot more like it happens at a university than anything/anywhere else.

Although I found Moorim School interesting plotwise, I wished they executed it better. They had pretty green actors though. I'm still going to read recaps since I'm curious how the story unfold though. I hope to see Lee Hyun Woo in a good drama in the future. He's still young so there's plenty of opportunities :)
Side note, I'm quite shocked at the ratings for Sassy Go Go. Had it really been that low before? That drama along with I Remember You are both gems. Seriously underrated in my opinion! Did they had strong competitions? Here I thought Healer was underrated with an average of 8% but these two deserves higher numbers...

I know, I Remember You and Sassy Go Go's low ratings are a shame, because both those shows took major risks in the execution of their storylines/deviated from the patterns we've got used to from kdramas of their genre.
Sure, SGG went head to head with a makjang melo and a major sageuk in the thick of exam season, but the numbers being that low probably means KBS is going to pull back and start packing its programming with 'safe' tripe featuring big names.

Ahh thanks Pogo, that explains it - not many teens would tune in during college exam period. It's a pity though but at least international-wise both IRY and SGG are quite popular. I got into watching these two because of the hype around dramabeans :)

Agree 100% with you.
Wish they've just stuck with normal high school/college stuff instead of going with fantasy martial arts stuff. You really can't pull off that kind of thing successfully unless you are REALLy good at it (script/actors/directing etc) and have the budget for it!
I had so looked forward to this. :(

<instead of going with fantasy martial arts stuff
The thing is, there has barely been any fantasy stuff – it's really only the averted accident at the concert & the entrance to the school (the forest beasts were just animals and SW's visions are suppressed memories coming to the surface).
It's like they wrote "fantasy" when filling out a form to describe the drama's genre and then forgot to actually DO things that would make it fall into that genre.

Exactly and I think that's a problem. I was expecting Martial Arts Hogwarts and it's more like Dream High 2.
I mean, I'm entertained, and thre's some kind of metaplot vibe starting to develop now but I'm shocked it was supposed to be 20 episodes because they just don't feel like they have the material for it.

They absolutely don't have the material. A lot of what we see every episode, we have already seen: the 3-4 minutes summing up the previous episode, WS's suppressed memories replayed yet again (with a wee bit added every time), the teachers sitting & eating/drinking & the other students standing & staring – again and again. We've already seen the students train multiple times, we've seen Ariel struggle with earning money.
The new bits we get in each episode are absolutely minimal: we already knew there's a treasure at the school, now we know it has a name. We've already seen the guy in the coma several times, okay, now he woke up (the medical staff making out in his room was pure filler). We've seen Chi-ang being overbearing towards Ariel several times (whether in forced hugs in the kitchen, or forced meals in fancy restaurants). I could go on, but you get the point....
I don't want to diss the show, because at this point I just feel sorry for the young actors (even the very green ones) but the writing & directing sucks. There absolutely could have been a substantial story, more of a fantasy atmosphere, and interesting characters which could have been fleshed out, including side characters, with their own little tales. Even the leads are barely there – I mean, all we know about Sun-a at this point is that she's the dean's daughter, a good/gutsy friend to Ariel, and apparently a fan of Shi-Woo (or has a crush on him).

nope, as I pointed out above, January is a great time for successful teen/school dramas, and Moorim School got prime time at that time of the year.
Sure, the competition is strong but it's logging ratings at the same level as a teen drama that came in the middle of exam season....it's def. not the time of year that's to blame here.

the leads are the problems. They are horrible actors. It's funny how all of the secondary and tertiary characters are actors and actresses you see all the time turning in quality performances, but this drama struggles. The Ladies are pulling their weight, and are most often the best part of the show, but these idol dudes are terrible, and were written terrible, as well, so it's not entirely their fault. This drama is trying to play a long game on secrets with actor who can't carry scenes, so it was bound to fall apart. I'm still watching, for the side characters I enjoy, but it's kind of a chore.

I doubt it's the leads fault... lee hyun woo is known to be a very good actor despite being young... I think it's just the content of the drama... it's corny af... and having that cringe worthy cg food fight so early is definitely going to make people skeptical about watching it

Last night's ep, ep 5, seems to have a script that is written by a high schooler. It is testing on my patience when they do a 5 min. review at the beginning of each ep. What's the matter? Do we all have amnesia? Or more likely they are just filler vids.
Then there's that segment where the teachers go out for a drink fest, that ends up being a pissing contest! That takes another good 5 mins+. What kind of school that teaches discipline, meditation, and self-control would have teachers that are so damned immature? I'd stay clear of any institute with such a staff, even if it's just for an after-school tutoring class!
Then there is the 2nd male lead's acting!
I love fantasy dramas. So disappointed w this one.
Lee Hyun Woo was quite good in The Technicians. Wish him better luck next time.

KBS needs to fix their Mon-Tues schedule. Besides OMV and Healer nothing has come close to decent ratings. They need to get some Makjang drama since most older people would watch that then this insanely weird drama.

I think KBS need to bring epic sageuk, the kind like Jang Young Sil or Jingbirok to its Mon-Tue slot.. Or, they could bring melodrama like the ones on MBC (Glamorous Temptation, Monster, etc).
Youth romance or romcom simply doesn't garner much interest from public. Unless it's YFAS level.

Moorim School feels kind of like Dream High to me but the story isn't so engaging and the kids are annoying. I saw Hong Bin in Feel Good Days and he still acts like that role he had in this drama. Seo Ye Ji is sooo pretty and Lee Hyun Woo rocks silver hair but that's about all there is in the drama. I think I would've liked a 2-ep special with the two leads and lots of sweet moments.
By the way, after Answer 1988, I can finally tell Park Bo Gum and Lee Hyun Woo apart. =) And seriously cannot understand how I could have confused them in the first place! *Swoon*Park Bo Gum*Swoon*

I don't think they have much story to tell. I've noticed the first 3-4 minutes of EVERY episode, since episode 2 (!), is replaying a "summary" of scenes from the previous episodes. Normally, that's what dramas do in the final weeks of their run, when airtime and live-shooting cut too close.
Plus, ep. 5 had barely any plot movement. They had a party. Ariel had some issues at her job. The boys trained a little and Woo-shin remembered something. (And probably only the last one has any significance for the greater plot.) Beyond that, we still know nothing about any of the other students and the teachers keep only sitting & eating or sitting & drinking.

I don’t see this as a bad thing. Maybe they should bring it down to 12 episodes instead. Might lead to a more cohesive plot. I know Lee Hyun Woo is supposed to be the more experienced actor on set, but, lately, he seems to be sleepwalking through most of his scenes.
I don't know, he seems to have mentally checked out of the drama because it seems even Hong bin is putting in more of an effort. Must be exhausting working with amateurs. This drama seems like " To The Beautiful You No. 2. Another formulaic drama where the experienced actor does all the heavy lifting. I wish Lee Hyun Woo would choose his dramas better.

Sucks how the characters and plot could've developed better, since there were good layers, but the directing is really bad. It's not doing justice to the story (not the script) or the characters, and certainly only Hyunwoo seems to be carrying the character he's playing. Seo Yeji has her ups and downs, I don't see much from Yujin because of her character and holy Hongbin please, I don't hate you but oh gosh no. I hope the plot will finally move with the tightened schedule. It's not helping I'm watching Cheese along with this, and Cheese has way better writing and directing (even cinematography is nicer). I'm still going to continue watching to see if there will be improvement (plot and character development wise, acting is already gone case by now).

Really? One of the actors (Sam, the one who rejects Chi-ang's offer to have his dad fund things for the school) had a multiple-episode role in Warm & Cozy as Kang Sora's diving school buddy, and he was pretty well-received even if the drama itself wasn't.
Let's not go pinning the failure of this drama on anything besides the real issue - its weak script, shoddy directing and mostly-poor acting from the KOREAN main leads.

it's a real pity, because i really like the premise about fantasy martial arts, but it's just poorly executed and not enough story at all. there's not enough real conflict or tension to keep things exciting. plus the actors are very green, though i like the budding bromance between the two male leads. who are VERY green. i know lee hyun-woo is popular here on dramabeans, but i have to say i'm not sure why or what drama he's exactly popular from. he needs to work on his acting.

However, green acting combined with the awkward pacing and weird different storylines of the four main characters made me confused. Sassy Go Go did really well with the high school premise and brought real problems that meshed well together, while Moorim seems like it goes back and forth between a typical K-drama and a fantasy setting, which is soo confusing. I was hoping for more from this drama, so I'll just settle for hoping it picks up later since it's feeling the strain from the poor ratings.

I just read through 59 comments, laughed my ass off, and now here's mine.
Moorim School ain't a bad drama.
Why?
If you compare it to Personal Taste, Sword And Petal and a whole other bunch, it's gold.
Here's the problem:
There is having a good story, and then there is #delivering it the right way.
I can make you interested in my life story just by delivering it in the right tone and pacing
This drama just lacks writing, deliverance, timing and pace.
That regardless, it's not bad, I'm sticking with it till the end.
Who knows? It might turn out a Playful Kiss 2.0, dismissed at home, but a hit internationally.

I gave up on the show after I learned the first decent martial arts battle between the leads was a fantasy. After that, I looked at the recaps and it appeared that the entire series was going to be two spoiled rich teenage boys putzing around at school and whining a lot. Who cares? Give the girls some screen time or cut it down to six episodes and get it over with.

I had such high expectations for this show. The show seems alright when just reading the recaps, but now I'm thinking that is more the talent of the writer than the actual show. I'll probably skip actually watching it, but will follow the recaps still.

16 episodes is more than enough based on the way the show is moving along. I agree with Alua's comments--(paraphrasing here) most of each episode is a rehash of stuff that's been established, just a teeny-tiny bit more of something we've already been shown, and a bunch of scenes of people standing around wondering about what the main characters are doing. I've read there's been a bunch of criticism about the acting, but it's the story itself and directing that sucks.
I imagine they blew a significant portion of the budget with the CGI in the 1st episode. The big dog that was supposed to be some other worldly creature was sad. Asking an actor to pretend like he and the audience doesn't know a dog when they see one is a production failure.
I'm still going to watch. But I luv B-movies with cheesy special effects.

I don't know what people are complaining about....K Dramas have their own little world in general, nothing's truly like real life, comon. I LOVE Moorim school! The cast is gorgeous and fun and fresh and all of them are good actors. The plot is interesting and intriguing...i legitimately can't understand all the bitching! It's not like "classics" like Boys over Flowers, Heirs or Secret Garden are believable at all, seriously!

I feel like the acting itself just bores me to tears. I've watched like 3 episodes and the plot and execution isn't particularly engaging, nor is the acting that good. Everyone seems to love Lee Hyunwoo but I don't find his acting particularly great at all despite him being the most experienced actor on set.

I have mixed feelings about Moorim. On one hand, it's really ridiculous, from story to the execution. Look at all those bad martial arts movement, one can never believe that they're really martial arts students.
We are already on episode 6 but yet we still don't know the other students well, thus the lack of character development.
Honestly, I don't really care about the teachers too.
The only good thing about this show is Lee Hyun-woo and I'm watching bcos it's just interesting to see how he goes from here (developing his power and finding his father).
I think 16 episodes are a good length for this show. I just hope that they can still wrap up the story properly with this sudden cut.

Don't know why everyone hates it but from what I've seen, a lot of international fans are loving it including me!! I agree that some parts don't seem to make sense but I just feel like we should give the drama a chance. I mean it's only broadcasted 6 episodes. There's like 14 (or is it 10 now) episodes more to go!!! It isn't even halfway yet. I think that we should always allow a drama to tell its whole story first and let all its episodes broadcast first before deciding whether it was a good or bad drama. I mean it hasn't even finished yet, how do you immediately know that it's going to be a bad drama? From what I've seen there is storyline and I'm excited to see what happens next!! Also the romance is getting REAL!!
Therefore, I'm quite upset that the drama is going to be cut to 16 episodes. This will affect what the scriptwriters, producers and directors originally planned and they won't be able to show the audience the whole story that they had originally planned with a lot of work and effort. Also, this 4 episode difference may ruin the story and the actual 'suspense' and 'excitement' everyone wants because now they have to cut scenes and alter the original storyline. It's not fair to the people who had put a lot of work and effort into this drama!!

Same I’m actually loving the drama, and considering the fact every episode is longer than a hour (usually around a hour and 3 minutes) while other drama are like 57 minutes having a 3/4 minute recap isn’t bad at all, if you hate it then skip it. Plus character and story development, they are trying to do it very meticulously that’s why. The 20epi plan was to be-> first 10 in allll character individual dovelopments and then with one another and the other 10 was suppose to be the mission development in the story. The writers actually thought very well for the drama, being meticulous. I’d rather have them cut other dramas that be dragged on for soooo long rather than moorim school. Apart from that IRY and SGG were actually realllllllly good. Having top notch actors/actresses/directors/writers doesn’t always make a good drama, ppl need to give others dramas a try. We’re only 6 episodes in ayway. That’s not even half way through whether it’s suppose to be a 16/20 episode drama.
Ppl judge so quickly, no hate. Just my opinion stated like, others did.

The overwhelming cheapness of episode 6 was really telling. It's almost at the level of an actual prom in a gym with a handicam filming it. Soooo bad.

It's actully very difficult to make these School dramas hit. example take a look at sassy Go Go, Orange Marmalade, Moorim School, and even Anger mom etc etc. they all flop eventually due to not convincing acting and also convincing the viewers in this case. School dramas has to be a very serious project with starsubbed casts and big budget plus big famous writers and producers has to come together to produce an amazing teen drama like Twilight, Heirs, Boys over flowers etc etc. they need alot of dedication and money on these kind of projects to become something

example take a look at Cheese in the trap and how much hardwork, dedication and money that went into it. It's really not that hard to grasp this situation. Moorim school was low budget and I knew it will flop from the beginning

SO MANY BAD COMMENTS, DANG. I guess.. this is what they call NETIZENS? Geez. I know ya'll are expressing your opinion, so I'll give mines too. This drama has GREAT potential to keep on going. All characters are somewhat connected, leading back to creating a lot of character development. Its amazing, romance and action! What else do you need? Main heroines don't stand out? They show so much girl power, they're beautiful, and their acting is uncomparably good to your typical Hallyu star. Low budgets? So what, I for once am someone who was told to APPRECIATE WHAT I AM GIVEN. Either way, even if you watched episode 1-6, you can't really give up on it becuase 'it lacked something', be fair and stick to see where this goes. Otherwise, you're just like South Korea... very picky in what they see compared to what we see. Am I right? I just feel bad for the actors b/c in the BTS of their scenes, you see them laugh and enjoy each others company like they enjoy filming alongside each other. Yeah!.. They do give it their best to be realistic, non-hardworkers huh? You thought. From a storyline of 20 eps reduced to 16 eps, I fear the story plot could change becuase of this :c
My point has been made.

I don't know why more people don't watch this show. I think it is super fun. Yes, the CG could be better but it is very entertaining nonetheless. My teenage kids really enjoy it. Too bad it is getting cut short. I am hoping that despite ratings it will keep its full 20 episode run.

People are mostly judging without even watching. For example people praise that crappy drama OMV mostly because it has popular casts, & said GT is meh because it's makjang bla bla . I tried several eps of both & chose to continue GT because the story hooked me more. Just because it's not your fave genre or not your fave actor in it, doesn't mean it's bad. Geez! I'm glad that underrated drama like GT in your eyes has decent ratings so far.

Bad planning and execution by KBS. Unskilled writer, director, thin script equal low ratings. I watched the six episodes. Teachers are chitchatting to kill time. The Moorim magic should have appeared in episode 2.

I find this drama average at best so far but am still going to continue watching because I think it finally picked up the pace with episode 6. Even with Healer, I wasn't hooked until around episode 7 so I'm not giving up on Moorim School yet. I even find this more enjoyable than Heirs (tbh that one was a disaster). It's a pity the storyline will have to be changed due to the episode cut though ):
At least Moorim School has some awesome OSTs!

I wonder how bad it is??? I was so impatient and wanted to catch the episode the moment I can find it online even when there is no subtitle. Watch it again when the subtitle r ready and catch it at KBS channel (which r 2 episodes behind) on tues and wed. And again when it got replayed on Sat. I thought the leads actors/actress and others acted decently. Yes, of course the story and acting can always improve but that didn't bother me. I enjoy it?

I am watching the series on Drama Fever with English subtitles, that is keeping pace with On Demand Korea that posts the show, the day after airing in Korea. I have a hard time keeping up with KBS TV schedule.
