Cheese in the Trap: Episode 6

It’s a great episode for cuteness, and growth in understanding, and poignant character beats, and just everything, really. There are nice moments for several characters, but it’s our main couple who shines as they draw closer, start growing out of their awkwardness a bit (though I’ll always welcome a little comical flailing), and find common ground showing them just how they’re alike in relatable ways. Though not too alike, of course, since I can only handle one of them being an inscrutable enigma at a time. I don’t think he’ll ever not be mysterious, but he does inch ever so closer to scrutable territory.

EPISODE 6 RECAP

Seol finds herself in a dream-like scene, dressed up and sitting at an elegant dinner table opposite Jung. She points out that their relationship isn’t exactly in “fancy dinner date” mode right now, but Jung asks if she means to get stuck on every last issue, arguing everything without letting anything slide.

He reminds her how she misjudged him multiple times from the start, and as he lists each incident and asks why she’s especially argumentative with him, the table between them grows longer and shoves them farther apart.

He gets more worked up, saying that he’s trying very hard right now, and did everything to help her: “What are you so unhappy with?”

Seol exclaims, “I didn’t want those things!” He asks, “So, did you dislike them? Honestly, you liked it, didn’t you? You received all those things and now I’m the bad guy? How perfect do you expect me to be?”

The chandelier crashes down onto the tabletop. Jung asks, “What will you do now? Are you going to keep staying away from me?”

Seol wakes up and wonders how even in her dream, Jung just says his piece without listening.

She talks it out with Bora, who says if it were her she’d be happy to have landed such a guy (though I might note a girl who reacted like that would never grab Jung’s interest). Seol hasn’t talked to Jung in several days and explains that she doesn’t want him helping her that way, and is afraid that she might get too used to such favors. Bora asks what Seol feels, aside from what her brain thinks—does she mean to break up?

Seol haltingly writes a text telling Jung she wants to talk and asks for time tomorrow.

In-ho gets another text from his noona, flippantly demanding more money. It riles him up and he mutters angrily to himself as he passes by Seol, who asks what that’s about.

He replies that he’s in deep deliberation over when she’ll buy him dinner again, making her roll her eyes at his obsession with free dinners. He acts the long-suffering victim, saying how this must be how it feels to have debtors skip out on you, reminding her that she’d offered to buy when he’d helped her last time. So Seol offers to buy tonight, and they make plans to meet later.

Jung flips through his phone log and starts deleting messages from Seol. He hesitates for a moment before deleting the full conversation, but goes through and hits delete just as Seol’s newest text comes in. He jerks in surprise, but the message cheers him up and he’s suddenly energized to get ready and head out.

As In-ho waits for Seol, a TV program playing in the store window catches his eye. A piano professor talks glowingly about a pupil who just won a piano competition, calling him a shining pearl found in the mud. In-ho’s eyes grow teary as the teacher says that it’s an honor to have met such a student.

A flashback reveals that In-ho had studied with that teacher, who’d often chided him for not taking the piano seriously—In-ho was talented, but liked looking cool and showing off. The teacher warned that praise could be poison to a musician, adding, “You know you’re a special student to me, don’t you?

That teacher had sat at his hospital bedside some time later, in the aftermath of the fight that ruined his hand. He’d urged In-ho to go through rehab, but In-ho had lain there, staring at his ruined hand.

Now In-ho takes another look at his hand, getting drenched in the rain as he watches this new student performing brilliantly onscreen.

Running late, Seol rushes up to the store in time to see In-ho transfixed in front of that screen, wiping at his tears. He turns to see her standing there, and she hurries over to cover him with her umbrella. She doesn’t say anything, and he suggests drinks instead of dinner, leading the way.

Meanwhile, Jung arrives outside Seol’s building to wait for her return. He kneels down to observe a snail crawling on a leaf, picking it up with that childish curiosity he’d shown the last time as well, marveling at the bug.

As Seol and In-ho drink at the neighborhood bar, he asks if she “saw” earlier, and she feigns ignorance, asking, “Saw what? You getting soaked by the rain?” Aw, he knows she’s saying that for his benefit, and smiles at it.

Jung arrives in the bar and sits next to Seol, saying lightly that he’d thought of this place and came by on the off-chance she might be here. Seol cringes and thinks how it feels like she’s been caught cheating, when she’s actually the one angry at him right now. Jung keeps his tone pleasant although he reminds In-ho that he’d warned him to stay away.

The boys are bickering in no time, with Jung pointing out that In-ho ought to be working to support his sister rather than spending his time drinking, and In-ho snapping back that it’s Jung’s fault.

Seol jumps in to stop the arguing, though mention of In-ha makes her recall “that really pretty girl” from the other day, which has her wondering what her relationship is to Jung. Jung thanks Seol for texting him, and at mention of their fight, In-ho scoffs that if they’re dating, they should spend their time kissing rather than fighting (right?).

He concludes that they’re clearly ill-suited and should break up, then starts sharing stories of how many girls Jung has dated and dumped for the slightest reason, all with beautiful faces and hot bodies. Seol starts knocking back the shots.

She’s drunk pretty quickly, and asks if Jung dated In-ha too. Both boys burst out no, each offended at the thought. At In-ho’s guess that she’s never dated before, Seol slurs that she totally has, although In-ho guesses it was a church oppa (Seol: “How’d you know?”) whom she’d chased around and gotten dumped by. She protests, but I’d say he’s got her number.

The boys start sniping again, and this time Seol orders drunkenly, “Both of you, shut up!” She drops to banmal (normally she’s studious about using proper jondae speech) and calls them grade schoolers, swiping at each of their heads in turn, chiding one for being so quick to get peevish, and the other for always demanding to be bought food.

When In-ho calls her Dog Hair, she defends her hair as naturally curly, then slumps into her chair mumbling, “What am I supposed to do? Do you think that just because I’m not doing anything, I’m not curious? There are so many things I want to know.”

Jung asks what she wants to know, and both guys listen with interest… and she asks again if Jung dated In-ha. Both of them bark their denial, and then she lets her face fall onto the table with a thunk.

Jung ends up piggybacking her home, and In-ho follows, warning him to watch where he puts his hands. Then In-ho asks, “Do you really think you have no reason to feel sorry toward me?” Jung pauses for a moment, then replies with a question of his own: “What about you?”

In-ho lets it drop, saying he won’t ask anymore. Just then, a water bottle comes flying at his head, thrown by an irate younger guy who screams at the two for messing with a defenseless girl. They don’t know what he means until he yells, “Put my noona down!”

This is younger brother Hong Joon (aw, it’s Kim Hee-chan, of Twenty Again and The Producers), and he jumps in to claim his sister, who starts gagging as the three guys usher her along.

In the morning, Seol wakes up in her room with Joon nearby, who informs her that he’s left his school in the States for the time being and will stay with her a while. Seol starts beating Joon with a pillow, though she’s interrupted by an incoming text from Jung, who asks how she’s feeling.

Joon asks which is the boyfriend, The Punk or The Model Student, and hopes it’s not Model Student. She doesn’t understand why, and he informs her that she barfed on his head last night, making Seol shrivel up in mortification.

Joon laughs that he’s kidding, though she did barf in front of the door, and predicts Jung will dump her soon. She sighs in relief, then beats her brother with the pillow for messing with her, wailing in embarrassment that she’ll never touch liquor again.

Seol sees her neighbor Joo-yong packing up his belongings and is surprised to hear he’s moving out. He doesn’t tell her why, or Jung’s part in it, and just sweetly wishes her well and asks that she not mention his relationship with his boyfriend to anyone.

Seol feels the awkwardness of having last night’s drunkenness changing the dynamic with Jung, since she was angry at him previously. He suggests that she not drink so much in the future, and she asks if she made a lot of mistakes. Jung smiles and just says she was cute.

She tells him that Joo-yong is moving out, and he doesn’t show much of a reaction. She apologizes for getting angry just based on what her department boss told her, saying she’ll be understanding this time. But she asks him to promise not to do things like this in the future, and to talk to her first about things that concern her. Jung promises, and it makes her happy.

She suggests dinner and a movie, and Jung is visibly relieved, admitting he’d come prepared for her to be much angrier. But she says she’ll let him off easy this time.

In-ho becomes aware of being followed down the street, and his stalker turns out to be an old acquaintance. The guy swears he found In-ho from the academy’s ad and not because “the boss” sent him—it must be that guy who’s trying to track him down for whatever ominous reason. The friend warns that the boss will be on to him soon enough and suggests he leave the area, which means In-ho will have to move yet again. He complains that he has to leave a place every time he’s about to get attached, with a new phone number and place to live.

In-ha tries to sweet-talks an ex, angling after money, which falls flat when he clues in right away and calls her pathetic. She knows In-ho will scold her ear off when she asks for more cash, but doesn’t hesitate to call him anyway.

In-ho answers the phone with “I have no money,” then tells her he’s going to skip town soon. She asks if he’s gotten into more trouble, but he says there’s no point telling her since she won’t help solve the problem.

Jung walks Seol home after their date, telling her he had fun. He asks when she’ll be moving, and she tells him it’ll be soon, sad at the idea that a lot of things are about to end—vacation, her living on her own.

“But not us,” he says with a smile. She agrees, then pulls out a box and shyly hands it to him.

It’s a watch, and she nervously awaits his reaction, admitting it’s a bit cheaper than the one he wears. She shrinks when he doesn’t react immediately and hangs her head, thus missing his smile.

Jung seems surprised and touched at the gesture and hugs Seol close, assuring her, “I like it. Really.” He thanks her, and they stand there for a long time, holding each other.

At home, Jung proudly puts Seol’s gift on, returning the watch he was wearing to his massive collection. He does seem quite thrilled about it.

Seol is giddy the next day, wishing every day could be like yesterday, with ready conversation and no fighting. In-ho cuts into her private squeefest, calling her Naturally Curly and being his usual pesky self. She heads off in annoyance, and he wonders if he won’t get to see her anymore.

While in a convenience store aisle, Seol recognizes the voice of another shopper and is immediately alarmed, and a flashback lets us know why. The guy had harassed her for ages, convinced they were in a flirting relationship and not hearing Seol’s protests that she didn’t like him or that she’d call the cops. Stalker Boy had insisted that everyone knew she liked him, including Jung—in fact, Jung was the one who gave him the confidence to pursue Seol, encouraging him to go for it.

She hurries off trying to avoid him, only to find him waiting around the corner, all friendly smiles and glib words. He insists on a chat, dragging her away by the wrist, though she breaks free and treats him coldly, clearly afraid.

He assures her that he’s got no bad feelings and suggests they get along well, but blocks her exit when she tries to leave. He gets worked up talking about how she’s dating Jung, yelling at her to wake up since there’s no way Jung is sincere. When she shoves him away from her, he gets snide, jeering at how Jung won her over when she wouldn’t give him the time of day.

Suddenly In-ho comes flying in and kicks the guy aside, complaining that his ears will rot from listening to his drivel. The stalker takes a swing and misses, while In-ho’s return punch connects.

Stalker Boy flings a few slurs Seol’s way, insinuating she’s a hussy, and In-ho snarls that he’s pathetic—the only treatment is a beating. He winds up with his (left, ruined) fist, and as Seol protests, he slams it into the wall.

The guy threatens to sue In-ho, but Seol snaps at him to try, reminding him that he’d stalked her all last year. Stalker Boy warns that Jung will hurt her soon enough, asking why she thinks Jung would have sent him after her last year. A good question, and it lands heavily.

Seol notices In-ho’s bloody hand, and later he finds a bag of bandages and medicine left in the office for him, and hears that Seol dropped it off.

Seol tries to shake off her doubts, and decides not to make an issue of it now that she and Jung have finally gotten to a good place. She lights up to see Jung waiting outside the academy and runs to greet him happily, and he playfully messes her hair and holds her face while In-ho witnesses the sweet exchange and tells himself it’s fine.

Jung walks Seol home and comments that it’s no longer awkward to be holding hands, and she notices happily that he’s wearing the watch.

But she’s a little jumpy thinking she sees someone in the alley, and it doesn’t help when the police are in front of her building asking about the pervert on the loose. She speaks up in defense of her neighbor Joo-yong, whose description is the opposite of the taller, thinner culprit.

Her fears aren’t helped when Jung worries about the pervert still running free, and when he sees her worry, he offers to stay the night with her.

She takes him up on the offer, and hurries to clear the mess as he settles into the teeny space, both fidgeting and looking around a bit awkwardly. Still, she thinks to herself that it’s a wonder how she came to trust someone she’d been so wary of before.

To break up the awkwardness, she suggests watching TV and starts pulling it out of her closet. Jung joins her in tugging at the blankets piled on top of it… which of course leads to him tumbling on top of her on her bed. Such a familiar trope, but I’m not complaining.

They freeze as he hovers there for long moments… and then he starts to lean down… and Seol claps a hand over her mouth in a panic.

Jung leans closer, but only to whisper in her ear that they don’t have to watch TV. He gets up to straighten the blankets, and Seol suggests going to bed, which comes out wrong (…or right, depending on how you look at it) and makes her clarify that she meant sleeping. Just sleeping.

Seol buries herself in bed, while Jung takes her lead and settles down on the floor calmly. And when he notes that it’s only ten-thirty, Seol decides it’s better to do something and asks for his suggestion.

Jung asks to see her photo album, smiling at how cute she was. (I love how sensitive Seol gets miffed at innocuous remarks like “When you were a kid your eyes were really big,” furrowing her brow at that until Jung wisely changes the topic.)

He notes that she seemed close to her brother then, and Seol agrees that they’re still close but concedes that there are things she finds annoying about Joon. He always got to do what he wanted as a child, and because he was so cute and bold, their parents have always been very lenient with him.

Jung notes, “There are people like that. People who easily receive love.”

Seol figures it’s not something you can change through hard work, sharing that when she was younger, she didn’t think she was very smart so she worked very hard at things. The result would turn out well, and she kept working hard: “But because at some point that becomes a habit and gets taken for granted, even when [I] make just a small mistake, it’s like a big wrong.”

Jung says he’s like that too, explaining how his father is very warm to others, but it’s always felt like he holds Jung to more expectations. Jung felt he had to meet them: “That I have to be kind, and can’t get angry. It wasn’t forced on me. But sometimes, one corner of my chest feels suffocated.”

He says it all smilingly, but Seol takes it in, growing serious. Jung says that if he’d been her parents, he would have doted on her: “Watching you working hard—it’s really great to see.” He assures her that she’s doing a good job now.

The words echo in her mind: “You’re doing well… you’re doing well… They’re the words I really wanted to hear from someone at least once.”

Seol asks what Jung liked about her, since they weren’t friendly before—she even thought he disliked her. He agrees that he did, and she asks what changed things.

Flashback. Seol meets with her team for a class project, and while the other two bicker about who should do more of the presentation, Seol offers to do it, although it’s clear she’s already done more than her share. Jung and his friend walk by, and his friend marvels at how similar Seol and Jung are, even though Jung doesn’t see why.

On another occasion, the members of the department try to shirk their duties for an upcoming event at the bar, leaving Seol to post flyers all by herself. Jung offers to help out despite having a cold, then tells Seol to go home while he does it.

She stays anyway, and Jung tells her, “Just go. Even if you do it, nobody will appreciate it.” She replies that regardless of getting recognition, she does things on her own because it’s more comfortable for her: “Aren’t you the same way, sunbae?” That sticks with him.

So Seol posts the flyers in the pouring rain and returns to the bar, where she hears Jung coughing nearby. He’s lying down in a booth, trying to sleep while in a cold sweat.

Some time later he wakes up and finds evidence of her having tended to him. She’s sleeping across the room, and as he covers her with his jacket, her hand reaches and she clings to his index finger unconsciously.

He fades out of his flashback into the present, but when Seol prods him to tell her when he started liking her, he just laughs that he doesn’t know. “It’s a secret,” he says, then reaches out to hold her index finger.

He turns the question to her, since she disliked him too. She agrees, and recounts that despite that, he kept popping up to ask her to eat together, and helping her, and doing things for her. Even now, she admits she finds it very odd that he’s in her room.

“So how do you feel now?” he asks. “Now you don’t dislike me?”

She thinks, “Although I don’t know how it is we came to be sitting side by side, if I like this moment right now, isn’t it enough?” So she answers playfully, “It’s my secret.”

When they decide to go to sleep for real, the mood is a bit less awkward as they settle down (although Jung bonks his head hard on the desk and struggles to insist he’s fine).

Meanwhile, spurned Stalker Boy looks up Seol’s academy and sees In-ho in the ads for it. He starts typing in a message on the website, ready to take down In-ho, and also muttering about revealing Jung’s true nature.

The post accuses In-ho of attacking someone in front of the academy, and the school director has no choice but to fire him. In-ho accepts it graciously and thanks the director for everything in the meantime, figuring the timing works out.

Seol offers to talk to the director about it, feeling bad since she was the cause for the altercation, but In-ho assures her that it’s fine since he was leaving Seoul anyway. He plays it off like he just has wanderlust and can’t stay put here, and warns her to avoid Stalker Boy since he won’t be around anymore.

She’s sadder than he expected, and he teases her about crying, which seems to prevent her from actually tearing up. In-ho heads off with a casual “Take care” and sends her a wave as he leaves, without turning to look back.

COMMENTS

Aw, it was a great episode for forward movement in the Seol-Jung relationship, with both of them taking big steps forward in baring themselves and sharing more of what makes them tick. What they actually say isn’t very much—no big speeches or extended analyses, for instance—but in their case, I feel like just getting them to a point where they feel comfortable opening up with each other shows a huge leap of faith.

Seol may have the more friendly, socially adept personality so I can see how his step forward may be the bigger one, but it’s still significant movement for her because she can be so withholding. She gives us a lot—we have a direct pipeline to her thoughts and feelings on a minute-by-minute basis—but even her closest friends have to prod her to open up (and wait, and wait, and wait until she’s ready to share). And it’s easy for her to lighten a mood or laugh something aside to avoid talking, so I really see a lot of growth and progress in her efforts to have an open and healthy relationship with Jung.

That’s no easy feat, and frankly he scared me in the last episode when he seemed almost angry at Life, and The World, when he had finally tried stepping outside his comfort zone in being honest with Seol about his scholarship maneuver, only to have her get angry anyway. Like he didn’t understand the reason for it, like he’d tried doing the thing people talk about and gotten burned by it.

So I was holding my breath to see if he’d retreat into his icy shell, taking the lesson as negative reinforcement rather than learning the right lesson—say, that you don’t do things without people’s permission just because you deem it good for them. And when he deleted his text conversations with Seol, I wondered if he was ready to give up on this relationship and wondered if this is what he does.

In-ho references him breaking up with his many girlfriends for the most trifling of reasons, and while I’d be willing to argue that none of those girlfriends were Seol (read: as awesome as) and the relationships weren’t going to last anyway, maybe it’s a sign that he gives up when things are hard. He is clearly really smitten with Seol, but he didn’t seem ready to smooth over the rift without her sending him a sign—it’s like she noted before about his way being to accept misunderstanding and not uttering a word of defense until prompted.

I love Seol, though, and am thankful that she’s more mature: When pressed to answer whether she’d break up over this, she thinks it over and talks it out. She’s still hilariously flaily and inexperienced and green in her own ways, but on the emotional maturity front, she gives me hope not just for herself or the relationship, but also for Jung himself.

They’re very similar in certain ways, but it helps that they deal with those aspects of their personality in different ways. Jung is clear-headed about what’s going on but emotionally stunted—or “suffocated,” to use his word—and his way of reacting isn’t healthy, either because he’s bottling it up inside or because he’s so detached that it threatens his ability to care about people, or, I dunno, function in society.

Seol is behind him in recognizing that about herself in words, but she’s constantly looking for ways to work on herself and improve things. It’s like they’re mirrors for each other, reflecting back the part of themselves that got missed in their blind spots.

More than anything I was really happy to see Seol so happy in this episode—and that it was Jung making her feel that way. I wasn’t concerned that she didn’t like him since it was clear enough that she did, but I worried that she’d bear the brunt of their problems and not really enjoy the dating, and it was a nice breath of fresh air to see her being giddy about seeing him, or running to meet him, or grinning unreservedly at him. I can only take him turning her insides upside-down so often before it makes turns me all upside-down too, and it’s a relief to be able to watch them growing closer and connecting and just being adorable.

Yes. Exactly.

This show IS the cheese in the trap, that's tempting us all and driving us nuts!

How can it only be Wednesday and we have to wait till Monday all over again!?
Even though I'm suffering second lead syndrome...I also absolutely love Jung and Seol together in all their awkwardness.

This. Is. My. New. Number. One. Drama. Of. All. Time.

(And like most of you, I've seen MANY. Cheese just has the right balance of quirk and cute. Gah the feels!)

This is my first time posting on dramabeans, but I really just wanna talk about what an amazing show Cheese is.
Every episode always keep me guessing about Jung's true nature, I really wish we could have more scenes where we see occurrences from his point of view and his thoughts.
Seol's inner monologues never fail to crack me up and I find myself wanting every piece of clothing she wears.
I find out Cheese couple very unique since they are in a relationship so early on in the drama and show all the real awkwardness and cuteness of an actual relationship and how they grow as a couple.
I can't wait until next Monday!

Some of my fav moments

- When he asks In-ho if he doesn't have anything to apologise to jung for.
So in-ho hurt jung too ? There is more to the story than what in-ho always tells. And in-ho has just glossed over what he did to jung ?????

- Jung saying some people get love easily that was just awww ...
implying he hasn't been one of them. And i can totally imagine in-ha hogging all attention since childhood while in-ho playing the adorable, happy go lucky boy that everyone loves. While jung gets sort of sidelined in his own home

- Love the chemistry between the 2 boys when seol got drunk ... Lets get all three drunk and it will be a hoot!

P.S - Why do so many actresses don't hug back properly ? They just leave their hands hanging limply to the side. Its a hug not a french kiss!

I think the awkward hug from Seol is because she's still feeling a bit "flaily" and shy about their relationship, not because the actress does not know how to do it properly.

Honestly, I think the hug thing is because it's directed that way.

re: the hug, in Seol's case we have enough clues to guess that she isn't totally comfortable with physical intimacy, for reasons that may be specific to her. So I don't think it's fair to pin that on the actress, when Kim Go-eun is likely acting according to instructions anyway.

In Ho is just being friendly with Seol upto this point, he has no feelings at all for her and it seems he firstly also considers her as Jung's girlfriend for now... Present there is a very healthy relationship between them... I just love how In Ho attacked that stalker unable to bear the Seol getting insulted, I just remembered there was such a scene in ep 2 where he attacked that blind-date guy and he also protected his sister from her ex. In Ho is such a nice character... he just can't bear any girl getting insulted/attacked...

Except that I read that since the webtoon is not over yet the drama will have its own conclusion, independent of the webtoon. I think it makes sense. You want people watching the drama, but also want them to continue reading the webtoon.

I remember reading that the ending will only be a little different from the artist's planned ending for the webtoon, so I'm guessing (and hoping) that the drama won't change up the OTP. Crossing fingers.

0

I really hope the main OTP does not change. I have been reading the webtoon and the story is really involve around Jung and Seol relationship. So I hope the drama stay true to the pairing. I just didn't like how the drama made In Ho so perfect. I the webtoon he has his flaws just like jung did. He's more hot headed, rude, and aggressive. but either way I love the drama and the webtoon! #teamjung

I'm in LOVE! I'm half-dead with back to back classes and I'd like nothing better than to sink into bed and turn into a sloth but I just wanted to let out how much I love this show! Seol and Yoo Jung’s relationship sure took a wonderful leap there! We went from elegant formality and ever-lengthening tables and metaphorical dreams to Yoo Jung whacking his head on her desk and getting all embarrassed. The distance between them keeping shrinking and it feels so real! Yoo Jung sure got petulant at the start upon no word from Seol (how does it feel to be on the receiving end? I love you Yoo Jung but sometimes you make me sigh) what with him deleting her messages, but I didn’t see it as a ‘oh Yoo Jung’s being a psycho’ sort of thing but just him throwing the equivalent of a tantrum. And it’s so like Yoo Jung to have such a silent, emotionless tantrum. But anyone who was having doubts about what he felt for Seol surely had a giggle at how he sprung up and dashed away upon getting that message. The look on his face upon getting that watch was something though. I’ve noticed that Yoo Jung rarely expresses anything besides happiness on his face. He has three main modes, as I like to call them: Yoo Jung bitch-face, Yoo Jung’s fake smile, and 'I like being around you Seol'.

He rarely shows any other emotion. It’s definitely linked to how he’s somewhat emotionally stunted because it’s not that he doesn’t feel surprise or pain or fear but that he doesn’t know how to show it. That was very evident upon him receiving the watch. It’s marvelous that we as viewers have built up enough of a connection with him to know that he’s delighted, but that Seol (who’s still getting closer) just reads his face and sees nothing until he hugs her.

Inho remains the most riveting character for me (with Yoo Jung and Seol tied at second place) because there's something wondrous about how confident and dependable he is, despite all he's gone through and how broken he is. I'm a piano player myself and I can't even begin to imagine the depth of Inho's pain at no longer being able to feel your fingers dance across the keys. And Seo Kangjoon brilliantly conveyed that frustration, envy and gut-wrenching pain upon watching his former teacher and that student. Incidentally the piece that student was playing was Rachmanioff's: Piano Concert No. 2, a piece that Nodame and Chiaki played together in episode 6 of the original Nodame Cantabile which is AWESOME. There's such a tragic aspect to his character, in this relationship with his sister, in how he keeps having to leave everything behind, in how he can't play the piano anymore. And it's worse when you see what a great person he is. Ugh, it's Segi fever all over again. There I go getting overly fond of men with a penchant for black studs and the weight of the world on their shoulders.

SO AGREE!
And yasss.. I don't know why but In-ho playing the piano reminded me of Nodame Cantabile (maybe I'm still hooked to that drama).
And my most favorite part!! Jung bang his head. I had to pause the drama and laugh for sometimes. So funny and cute (esp when he tried to be okay in front of Seol, while Seol hardly held her laugh). Kyaaahhhh

That part was hilarious! I remember thinking, the first time he went to sleep, "that desk is awfully close, he could hit his head" and lo behold, he hit his head.

But I wonder if that was scripted, it seemed too natural...

"He has three main modes, as I like to call them: Yoo Jung bitch-face, Yoo Jung’s fake smile, and ‘I like being around you Seol’."

It becomes evident in the conversation he had with Seoul about his father, where he mentions that he cannot get angry and he always has to smile or something in the lines of that. That's a big part of the reason why he is how he is in my opinion. He has this desperate need to please his dad (it might not come out in the drama as much as in the webtoon maybe). I wish they'd make that part of his characterisation clear for the viewers as well.

The cheese has got holey eg. there are sudden jumps in the progression of YJ and HS's relationship. Is it a timing issue with the producers trying to pack the webtoon into just 16 episodes?

Don't start stinking show. Please.

I actually enjoy the much faster pacing... I felt like the webtoon dragged some of its angsty arcs a little too much for my taste (thank god I binge-read it) I think the production team is doing a great job :D

The narrative arcs in the webtoon took a much longer time to unfold, and also unfolded at different points in the story. For example, the Ju Yeon story about revealing to Seul that Jung didn't care about the homeless man and walked away, happened much later after Seul and Jung were a bit closer, and if I'm not mistaken, after or alongside the stalker arc. The stalker arc also had two segments - the first part was the initial pursuit, which I think might be skipped over and shown only in abbreviated flashback, and then second was when the stalker was keen to show it was Jung's fault.

It's understandable the scriptwriters had to take out various "stories" from the webtoon and re-cut them into dramatic arcs for the drama. Mostly, I think they've done a good job. The only difference i really felt was that the drama arc took a while to show us more sweetness between Jung and Seul, and assuring us they are meant as the OTP. In the webtoon, there is established a lot more along the way, which I guess doesn't work for the k-drama arc.

Hm. I guess I felt the progression of the relationship was still on a solid track, even if the events are a bit jumbled. I don't think they've even kissed yet, right?

Required fields are marked *

No, the kissing is in line with the webtoon as it happens much later too, i think in Season 3. It's pretty solid, the current structure - the only quibble is we spend about 4 episodes wondering if Seul even likes him and whether they should even be together. In the webtoon, there's a bit more sweetness. But it's a minor quibble.

*possible mild spoilers?*

I'm kind of torn myself. Considering this is a romcom, it makes sense they'd want to make the relationship believable and sustainable, or his intentions less suspect... speeding things up makes it easier to like the relationship, and by extension, Yoo Jung. Just by the amount of Yoo Jung supporters/defenders on this site, you can tell it's working.

On the other hand, the main thing I loved about the webtoon in the first place *was* that constant uncertainty about his character. I liked not knowing if he had ulterior motives in approaching her and *always* being wary of his character. Here, there seems to be less ambiguity, which makes it easier to root for them without feeling doubt or second guessing ourselves. I mean, the doubt's still there, but it's nowhere near as fascinating, multi-layered as it is in the webtoon. I'm still loving and enjoying it, but I do find myself less drawn to the mystery of who Yoo Jung is, since the drama is so skimpy on their reveals.

That being said, I really hope they show the childhood flashbacks soon, because I feel we need that other perspective to counter all the cute we got in this episode. Though at least Young Gon's appearance/flashbacks are sure to help put things back on track!

In any case, I'm still loving and enjoying this. The casting is so spot-on, it's scary!!

About the ambiguity of Yoo Jung. I am in the same boat with you since I've read the webtoon and my feelings are similar to yours. But, I think there's a difference in just watching the drama without the background knowledge (I think then you would feel the same kind of angst) but now as you're watching it, you've already read it and it doesn't really have the same effect on you, because you already know it. That's what is happening to me. But it doesn't mean I'm not enjoying this show. With that being said, for some reason, even while reading the webtoon I wasn't quite so creeped out by Yoo Jung.. or, at least, I never had doubts about his intentions towards Seol.. I don't even know why.

I absolutely adore adaptations - Meteor Garden was the very first drama I ever watched, and it’s what got me into Asian dramas in the first place, so for me, knowing what’s going to happen doesn’t detract from the experience at all. I mean, I’ve seen every single version of Hana Yori Dango (even that hilarious American version), and loved every single one, so if keeping the mystery alive were an issue for me, there’s no way I could constantly sit through the same story again and again and again. As long as it retains the spirit of the original, I’m happy, and can enjoy every version on their own merits!

That being said, in the case of CitT, I guess I’m more frustrated on behalf of the viewers who *aren’t* privy to the original, since it feels like a huge chunk of the mystery is missing. At least for me, when I was reading it, I remember constantly second-guessing myself and wondering about Yoo Jung’s motives… he started liking her so abruptly, with no explanation, that like Seol, I started doubting his feelings for her were genuine, that there may have been a darker motive at play. Especially when we got that initial flashback of him as a child, where he was depicted as very cold, cruel, and calculating. Yet the drama has been arranging the reveals in a way that paints Yoo Jung in a more flattering light, much sooner than expected, so I’m hardly getting that vibe at all. It feels like they’re sacrificing that part of the plot in order to make the romance less off-putting, to fit Yoo Jung more easily into the leading man role… yet it *was* that ambiguity that drew me to the story in the first place and had me constantly turning the page, so that’s what I’m mourning. I’m sorry you didn’t have that same experience… it was one of the things I absolutely loved about the original, so I kinda feel bad for you too, lol.

In the end, I’m not too heartbroken, since I already got to experience all the ups and downs associated with that part of the mystery by reading the original. I guess I’m just disappointed that I didn’t get to see similar reactions from the drama community as well… it would’ve been fun to see them freaking out, debating, second-guessing themselves just like I did. But alas, it was just handed to them on a silver-platter... I still feel it's a bit of a loss.

Aah, I get what you mean. By the way, you don't have to feel sorry for me. Hehe, I like it this way. I think this boils down to how you see the character and interpret stuff that you read. Or, I don't know.. I like creepy characters in stories. Maybe that's what it is?
Anyways, I agree with you about the flashbacks!

0

I thought the drama is following the webtoon pretty similarly re: Yoo Jung's intentions. All of our initial character expositions are from Seol's point of view --so Jung is a cipher -- but as we go along, we get more interiority into Jung. Even in the webtoon, I think, it becomes clear that his affection for her is genuine--his other traits remain questionable, how good he is for Seol remains questionable: but in both mediums, his giant heartboner for Seol remains obvious from space. I think you can remain wary of his character without necessarily ascribing ulterior motives for him dating Seol.

Required fields are marked *

The thing with this is - because we see all from Seol's perspective, I couldn't really like believe everything she thinks about him? Because that's just her perspective and we couldn't see things from another perspective. I think that's why I was never on board with this 'he has ulterior motives for dating her' since he actually might like her and wants to date her for that. Anyways. This story is so much fun.

Required fields are marked *

It's precisely because Seol is the main narrator, and an unreliable one at that, that Jung's motives could be seen as sketchy, and hard to get a handle on. Especially when we were given insight via other characters too, but rarely through Jung himself (Inho, Yoo Jung, Young Gun, Joo Yong, AP Huh). So frankly, it was *never* clear to me (or many other readers, if CitT forums are any indication) that Jung's intentions were always honorable or "obvious from space". Sure, you can remain wary of his character *without* ascribing ulterior motives to him dating Seol... but the reverse is just as true.

The reason I like that webtoon & Yoojung so much is because he makes you questions everything. It is so fascinating & thrilling, trying to guess his actual motives/mood. I wish some of flashback chapters are include in drama but I guess they try to cover all the way to season 4.
I wish they show flashback between Jooyong & Yoojung when they were young but I guess not since I dont think Jooyong will appear again in later episode~ It can give us insight why Yoojung so angry at Jooyong.

I completely agree! Yoo Jung is such a fascinating character, it's so much fun trying to decipher his intentions when he makes you question everything!! He's an enigma wrapped in an enigma!

I haven't given up on the flashbacks yet... hopefully they'll appear within the next couple episodes. I mean, I can't imagine them leaving them out altogether since it's such a fascinating look into Jung's psyche, and the mystery of his character is the series selling-point! Maybe they're waiting for the alleyway confrontation with the panty-thief, since he claimed the two are similar... or maybe they'll reveal it once Seol starts falling for him really hard... *tries to think positive*

Because of the medium switch a lot of storylines and characters get dropped, merged or shortened when a manga, or in this case a webtoon, gets turned into a drama.

All I really ask is that the new product has the same overall feel/spirit of the original, an exact copy just isn't possible as each fan has their own take on scenes, characters and their importance.

HanaDan has taught me well.

Solid episode-- I think this is the one I’ve enjoyed the most so far…?
Oh my god the scene in which they were drinking…. that was so hilarious. Inho talking about Yoojung’s past girlfriends and his “trucks full of women” and Yoojung doesn’t say anything to counter it and Seol just taking it in with shot after shot of soju... also I’m laughing at Yoojung calling Inho a gossip and Inho just agreeing like hello yeah I’m a gossip??? It’s fun??? And Seol getting super drunk and talking without a filter “one is always angry about something” and “one is always asking me for food” skdfjsdl she hits them with the truth real quick. Seol’s tantrum in the morning is so hilarious I’m dying. Also, her brother is honestly the epitome of annoying brothers I feel her pain so much…

The moment she asks him to tell her when he’s going to make a decision/do something like the TA Heo thing and he agrees so readily it seems so sus…?? idk maybe i’m too skeptical of people (also i’ve read really far into the webtoon lmao)

It’s day 6 and I still can’t stand Inha lmao….. her eyes are so distracting ;___; what a shame, she has the ~look~ down but the acting isn’t doing it for me :(

THE HUG… IM STILL SCREAMING….. AHHHHHHHHHHH. I love him so much he’s an asshole but I love him…

And Oh Younggon fuckckkckckkc this asshole he’s creepy as fuck… Nothing scarier than a guy trying to convince you that he’s not stalking you but that you’re the one playing hard to get. And awww Inho’s fist ;____;

“Yoojung eats guys like that for dinner” slkdfj i can’t believe i found that…. slightly … hot… idk… dont judge me…

For the first time in the drama, i think i feel a bit of second lead syndrome??? Just a little bit?? That scene where Yoojung’s there to pick up Seol from the academy and she doesn’t hear Inho calling out to her....

YES THE KDRAMA CLASSIC SCENE, WHEN HE ENDS UP ON TOP OF HER AND THEN ENDS UP WHISERING IN HER EAR.. sorry i have so many emotions about this….… i’ve been waiting for it…. thank u dramaland

The little heart to heart showed a lot of their characters? Yoojung has so much in his mind yet doesn’t say a thing… Seol is so honest and her emotions are written are her face..
also i’m still laughing at yoojung hitting his head? oh baby…

Extremely excited for next week!!! Oh Younggon, Minsoo, the panty thief…. it’s gonna be a hell of a ride

I too find this ep the most enjoyable.

I feel that we are on less slippery ground wrt how scary YJ might be, so it is sane to watch them as an OTP, and that it is less tiring not to see Seol deal with ten million difficulties all at once.

I really feel for Inha (I don't have 2nd lead syndrome I swear?), tho I wouldn't be surprised to find out later that he plays a big part in sabotaging his own dream to be a concert pianist. There is a running theme in the drama of ppl making their own misery and blaming it entirely on others. It is never like that in life, is it? Still, I'm liking his easy ways, his easy laughs, and his being an easy mark for his loser sister. Now, what the hell is Her deal? I want to know.

My fav scenes are when the 2 boys, I mean guys appear together, more so than the OTP. Sthg is wrong w me maybe?

Oh Young Gon? Who's that? The stalker/attacker has a name? I completely missed that. Can't wait for YJ to turn him into dog feed.

I don't know if they are going to show a scene from the webtoon involving the stalker that was indeed creepy
*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*
There was a scene where this guy went with her to take her to her apartment and as she went up the stairs the lights in each floor turned on and you could see it through the front windows. As Seol is going up she notices the guy is still there and he is counting the floors with his fingers
*END SPOILER*

I don't think that scene will happen. Seol's apartment is kinda different from the webtoon. And if ever they decide to put it. It won't have much impact because it was already established in this episode that YG is a stalker.

I was thinking the same thing however it could still be incorporated since it happened last year before Seol took a break so while yeah he was already installed and presented as a stalker it could show the progression in which Seol figured it out. They will most likely show the event that lead to Seol and him speaking (the events at he basketball game) this was most likely hinted in the preview (her comforting him). If he was stalking her she would most likely move apartments which could cover that obstacle.

Jung's receipt of the watch was very odd, like he couldn't quite process how he was supposed to react. Not like he was displeased, just that he had a hard time getting out of neutral. But then when he's home and grinning like a besotted idiot, clearly he DID really like it, so...

The moments when Jung is alone and excited about Seol gives me hope that he's just got antisocial traits, and maybe he's not actually psychopathic.

I still like In Ho. Sure, he's an immature pest, but under it all he does seem like a good kid. He clearly values Seol as a friend, isn't being a creepy stalker, and it seems like he desperately wants to make up with Jung but doesn't know how. He comes across very much like a little brother to Jung who loves him but has been so badly disappointed the love turned to hate.

Required fields are marked *

Yes, the reaction to the watch was a little odd. But I find that's how very detached people are - they have delayed reactions as his emotions are usually so tucked away, he's busy trying to process the numerous thoughts in his head. Like "Huh, I didn't expect this?" "How come I didn't see this coming? I can usually see things coming." "Oh why did she buy this?" "Can she afford this?" "I'm worried she can't afford this." "Wait, if she can barely afford this what does this mean?" "Wait it means she really likes me" Blah blah...

It's typical of someone who will not just look at the watch and think "Do I like this watch" and react accordingly.

Your description of In Ho is good. That's probably the right way to view him. I guess I don't have a little brother so I didn't know how to see that - but pestering someone for food, especially in Asian culture - is probably a good thing symbolically.

I love how everybody's initial impressions of the main characters (especially from yesterday's episode) have been shot to pieces on this episode. And that is the beauty of having a character fleshed out in a meaningful way (or character growth, if u prefer).

I still don't see any significant "plots" tho, but the slices of life and meaningful interactions that we've seen so far are wonderful and, I think, enough to sustain the interest (and a high interest, at that) to the drama.

(^_^v Don't lecture me about the webtoon rn coz I'm totally disregarding that and instead just focusing on how the DRAMA impacts me.)

Regarding Jung's reaction of receiving the watch - the way I understand it - he was like that because in the past, he was always the one who gives. He's rich - so he always end up treating people and people almost all the time expect that he will pay if they go eat somewhere (remember ep 1). Also the same with Inho and Inha, his family takes care of them. And even also with Seol - didn't Seol also said that she always receive things from him? He never received anything from anybody and I think his reaction is like that because he never experienced being the one on the receiving end so he couldn't process the situation quickly enough.

Ummm....I really doubt no one has ever given him gifts before. He's the only son of a rich family, with a father who's a CEO. I'm sure he's had plenty of gifts, but they would be gifts he expected. Gifts on the right occasion, for the right price tag zones, from the right people (parents, extended family, father's friends etc) - basically gifts that are appropriate and expected. I think what threw him was the unexpectedness of the gift from Seul, whom he's had to work quite hard to chase, whose feelings for him are ambivalent. And add to that, her limited income.

Exactly! It can take awhile to process new experiences.

Agreed and it was so incredibly sweet. Jung is lucky to have found Seol. It must be incredible to him to be with someone that is uncomfortable with receiving all the time. His face as he hugged her was just so lovely.

And for Seol, having someone, finally, acknowledge how diligent and hardworking she is and actually appreciate it. It's lovely that both Jung and Seol have that in common and it's one of the reasons why I think they both really need each other very much and match well.

Is it just me, or did Park Hae Jin really whack his head on that desk? His reaction was slightly un-Jung-like, and the girl playing Seol did an admirable job holding the scene together but I don't think any of that was intentional.

I mean, he just goes straight back at a solid speed, the entire desk jolts on impact, and then Seol jumps a mile and shoots a shocked look in a direction where the staff would be before looking over to him. It's endearing if seen as Jung proving he's human, but I genuinely wonder if that's PHJ misjudging the distance to the desk in the dark and getting a big bruise.

Not trying to compare but the stalker card was delt so early in webtoon and was the main reason for which I never trusted jung I was actually happy thinking that they won't use it in drama but that was one of the main part of all the confusion... watching the preview next episode is going to be really scary....
Till then I'll watch this episode a zillion times... Thanks jb for quick recap....

I honestly and truly love Jung, not just because he's hot as hell (Park Hae Jin... 'nuff said) but because he's so FASCINATING. He's multifaceted not in a cliche way but in a sincerely interesting way.

I WANT to know him, and tat's a novel feeling for me because in so many dramas it's not at all difficult to know how a character's arc is going to progress and what kind of people they are. With Jung it's well and truly a mystery.

BUT. Baek In Ho tugs at my heartstrings because he reminds me of me. He's so guilty about his mistakes and let's them affect him to the point where he's being taken advantage of because of them. I love Lee Jung and Seol as a couple but In Ho is the one I want to hug and pat on the head and wrap in a blanket with some cocoa.

i find the acting so refreshing <3 i simply love the actress(Seol) and the natural way of how she brought life to the character.

i have never read the webtoon and even if id did i wont compare it because the drama's way of story telling works for me and makes me look forward to the next episode every.single.time :)

Today's interaction are so cute and adorbs, it melts my heart! i feel like running up and down and shouting just because im so twitterpated:P

thanks for the recap!

I loved that scene too! The cartoon square inlay was a clever touch.

I also found myself surprisingly moved by InHo's scene in the rain...

I'll have to admit, I hadnt intended on adding this drama to my usual weekly marathon fests because on paper, the premise just seemed so boring...but pleasantly surprised by the unique directional touch, quirky feel and whimsical cinematography...somehow it all works!

Plus I love a heroine that is flawed, but has enough brains to stand up for herself and speak up honestly!

Omaigah! How dreamy is Jung!
And Park Hae Jin just makes Jung even more dreamier (not to mention creepier) than his webtoon self. How can I get all these feels just from looking at the screencaps?

I'm liking how the scriptwriter strings the plot together. I'm just hoping he/she would add more dreamy scenes so I can swoon over these two more. LOL!

Thanks JB! Can't we fast forward to next Monday already?

I love all the warm scenes for Seol and Jung together... They are so cute!!! But not that I dont enjoy their dark scenes (whenever they confront each other).
The cinematography is very nice. Ost and outfits are well chosen. They always look so harmonized together regardless how tiny KSG comparing to PHJ.
Fangirling!!!!!!

I'm really saddened by In-ho's predicament. I think he has it worse here, with no one permanent to be there for him when he needs someone to lean on, with a past so terrible that it ruined his future. I'm happy that the Seol-Jung relationship is going so well at the moment, but I can't help but pull for In-ho, and all he's going through.

So happy to find another drama that I truly adore! I was having Post Reply 1988 blues! Admittedly I see the top of your recap and when you or Girlfriday like it so much, it must be something great *winks*

This one is rather intriguing and gives me butterflies in my stomach of the slow but sure romance of the leads! Awwwww Loveeeeeeeeeee it !

Although i get so worried when things get revealed on Yoo Jung, and I tell myself - to trust Yoo Jung LOL I can't help myself, I like him too much, being biased is not a sin in my books! LOL

Can every episode have a scene with a drunk Seol berating Jung and In-Ho after all the emotional turmoil she's had to deal with being in the middle of them? Can every episode have a heart to heart between our main couple and Jung smacking his head on something? He seemed so much more human (normal) this episode, even in the flashback.

I think I actually awww'd a bit over Seol grabbing Jung's finger unknowingly in the flashback and then him grabbing hers after saying it was a secret. It was so cute.

I actually loved In-Ho this episode! That scene with him in the rain really got to me. Then him leaving and Seol being sad...I don't think she has romantic feelings for him (possibly will later on, idk, I haven't read the webtoon), but it's clear she cares for him as a friend and does feel for him with the little she knows about his past.

I'm terrified at all the stuff that's about to go down soon, though. Also, I just feel absolute pity for In-Ha rather than hate, but that's subject to change depending on what she's going to do later on. This episode was so easy-going and had laugh out loud moments compared to last episode despite some serious scenes, and that was really nice! Seol loosening up around Jung makes watching it a lot less...tense? I'm less on edge now lol.

Oh dear I adored this episode. There was no Dark Music for Yoojung today, but there were enough hints to keep us questioning. I'm sure that they're lulling us into a sense of security before something comes along and smashes it again.

I haven't read the webtoon so I'm not sure but I like how it allows new characters to continuously crop up and old ones to perhaps leave once their job is done. I'm so used to getting one creep in a rom com so to have the pervert and now stalker keeps the plot from slowing down. (Though on the other hand, I thought the hospital scene was a bit out of the blue, but again, more slice of life so.) But ugh stalker. I like how they did the scenes, because there are so many guys like that around and it's easy to gloss over how damn scary situations are like for girls. (There was a Master of None episode that highlighted that particularly well.)

Sigh. I can't help but squeal over Inho. Cmon he's got broken bad boy written all over him. Poor boy didn't even get a mention in the post recap comment. (Not blaming you at all!!! Just that it was like him watching her run off to him after tutoring in written form hee hee.)

What I particularly like about this drama is that they show the charismatic pull the main leads have, while not excusing them of their faults or questionable natures.

And our protagonist is so great.

Omg this was the best episode so far! It had all my favorite scenes from the webtoon. I didn't think I could like In Ho more but the drama did just that and made Jung very likeable too in my eyes. Now I know why it's possible to love two men at once :P

I love the drinking scene where Seol gets drunk and how at the end of the evening when she was about to throw up, she was pushed home by three guys (Jung, In Ho AND her brother lol)

And the piano scene with In Ho ;___; My poor heart couldn't take it. This drama is so good!!! I spent so much time in the last three years analyzing the webtoon and trying to figure out whether Jung was good or bad and whether Jung or In Ho was better for Seol that I'm all analyzed out. I'm just going to enjoy the drama now and fangirl with other Seol/In Ho shippers.

Squeeeeeee! Seol/Jung are so adorable together, I just want to watch them over and over. Adorkable has taken on a whole new meaning. And I got my wish for more flashbacks (not something I ever thought I'd say about a kdrama to be honest). The flashback to Jung falling for Seol was great, I'm glad we got to see it. I'm interested to see how Jung 'sending Oh Young Gon to Seol' is going to play out (but I have confidence that Jung did not knowingly send a stalker towards Seol).

I'm now on Team Jung and In Ho become friends again (or properly for the first time), because I really like In Ho and I really like In Ho/Jung/Seol hanging out together. I like that In Ho calls Jung out on his nonesense, that Jung returns the favour and Seol is not afraid to talk back to In Ho too (and Jung when she's drunk). They are all just kind of great together.

Seol is the cutest drunk to ever drink and I would like her to get drunk in every episode, please? But only with Jung and In Ho so that she can lay down some hard truths for those boys and be adorable.

Damn this show is awesome. I really enjoy the mounting evidence of Seol's interest in Jung because I was worried in the beginning that she wasn't really interested (for me the dream was brilliant in giving voice to her inner thoughts). However I'm becoming more and more interested in her intense physical reactions to Jung touching her (ie covering her mouth when he was laying on top of her, crossing her arms over her chest when he grabbed her to avoid the motorbike). Is it just that she needs to get comfortable with him or is it something else. Don't know but am eager to find out.

i am questioning my sanity due to Jung. i really know i should not be falling for a guy like this but dang, he is very charming, especially in this episode. (park hae jin's visuals really can do no wrong.)

and I thank CITT for bringing us Seol. Those of you who identify with Seol - those of you who work hard but much prefer working alone, hate feeling burdensome to others, really take a long time to open up about our feelings (though we are outgoing still!) and will choose to just endure till we can't take it, those who feel like the world is going to end because we made one small mistake ... I hope what jung said, about how we are doing a good job, did connect & comfort you. (won't lie, I cried then.)

I like that bit, and it was clear how much it meant to Seul for him, for someone to say that.

Actually, there's a trope in K-drama I've come to love. From time to time, people just say to each other "You've worked hard, thank you." It's not just in business situations, but in personal relationships. Like Doek Sun telling Taek at the end of a long day for him. There seems to be a deeper implication apart from just meaning "good job", but that "you've put in sincere effort". I find that really nice - that it recognises effort, and not just achievement.

This drama? I'm Team In Ho all the way. He's just such a wonderful character, and I love how comfortable Seol is when she's with him. Their chemistry seems so unforced. I actually really don't like Jung as a romantic partner for Seol (though he fascinates me as a character, and I think Park Hae Jin is doing an amazing job with the role), so when they inevitably end up together, I am going to be so, so sad. :'(

Finally some physical contact. They are so cute. Anyone else notice the new Park Hae-jin/Kim Go-eun header on the site? Love it. And I love this show. PHJ plays the sweet, yet scary Yoo Jung so well. It's like his characters from YFAS and Bad Guys combined. And KGE is great as Seol. She picked the perfect show for her first drama. And Seo Kang-joon has really stepped it up in the acting department. This casting is just so spot-on. But I can't help but wonder: where can this relationship go and what kind of a future can be expected with a boyfriend like Yoo Jung? Oh well, I'll just enjoy the cute while it's here.

This was a great episode for In-Ho. Seo Kang Joon did a great job of portraying In-Ho's passion for the piano, his sadness at having lost his opportunity, missing his teacher and his playing days, and you could feel his heart race and his body feel every note when the playing on tv neared finish. So much so that Seol waited until the song was over before she dared to walk over to him. That was such a beautiful scene of In-Ho in the rain. I just love this guy more and more.

I'm glad Seol and Jung had a cute episode, and Seol is a much bigger person than most people I know because that was pretty forgiving of her - and almost too quickly if you ask me. But, I guess she wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, like she told herself in her dream.

What bothers me still about Jung is that: (1) he was just ready and able to just quickly delete her text messages without much thought and assumed the relationship over. I thought he liked her but I guess he likes her enough only to satisfy his curiosity (i.e., by getting her a scholarship and making her not take leave); and (2) he apparently manipulated some crazy stalker boy to stalk Seol! See, this is why Jung is no good in my book. So, before, when he was interested in her he felt slighted by her and took steps to make sure she was stalked and possibly hurt by some crazy dude. NOW, he's all lovey dovey and protective, but what will happen when/if she does something that crosses him? That's a scary thought. THAT'S why Seol's spidey sense is telling her to watch out whenever she is with Jung.

I'm actually worried for Seol now that In-Ho is not around. He has been her guardian angel so to speak. Ugh. Dude, why are you leaving?? I could use more In-Ho in each episode, that's for sure. He's funnier, more honest, cooler, and his chemistry with Seol is off the chart. I hope he doesn't stay away too soon, otherwise, he can kiss winning Seol's heart goodbye completely for sure (I don't care, I'm still holding on to that little tiny tiny hope).

This drama is too addictive. This is why I should wait until it's all over to watch it all in one swoop. Waiting until Monday and Tuesday is... TORTURE!!

Thanks goodness I have the Iceland boys on Friday to keep my mind occupied over the weekend. Youth Over Flowers~ yeay Kang Ha Neul~

"So, before, when he was interested in her he felt slighted by her and took steps to make sure she was stalked and possibly hurt by some crazy dude."

You were hastily making assumptions when there was nothing concrete that was given by the show about the stalking incident. As you've already noticed, Jung has always been 'misunderstood'. There were a lot of incidents which showed that Jung was not a bad guy as what appears to be, as when Seoul incorrectly believed that Jung did not do anything to help her when she was being harassed by the drunk man. I've read the webtoon, but I won't say anything that will spoil the show for you about this stalking incident. But just that Jung in the 'webtoon', although cold and calculating, was way more of a bigger person than In Ho ever was. Tho he may be indifferent to others, but he never actively seek out to hurt anyone just because. He has his moral compass. But props to the show for making In Ho more likable.

On your point #2, I think we should wait to make judgements about whether he truly sent a stalker after Seol. Just like Jung has been judged and misperceived in the past, I think this will be the same case as well. The stalker boy obviously disregards or misinterprets things and takes things the total wrong way (i.e. telling seol to stop playing push and pull when she clearly tells him she doesn't like him). Jung may have said an off remark and stalker boy took that and ran with it. I don't think Jung deliberately set a stalker onto Seol.

Required fields are marked *

I think it sounds more like that usual combination of Jung being detached and offhand about something - and someone else running with their own agenda, and then not taking responsibility and blaming Jung, and Jung not bothering enough to clarify.

0

Required fields are marked *

I think you to much love In Ho, which make you to quickly judging Jung just from what the stalker said. Thankfully Seol learn her lesson from the past incident with the girl who sent drunk homeless man to her. Jung is so misterious that often make peoples missunderstand him. He is have his dark side, but after 6 episodes, it's clear most of his action never really intended to purposely hurt peoples without a reason.
And he clearly love Seol, he have a feeling for Seol that he never feel to another girls.
In Ho is cute, but to bad, from the story is clear Seol not have romantic feeling for him.
The drama is about Jung and Seol journey to know each other.

0

Required fields are marked *

I had the same scary thoughts right after crazy dude said bad things about Jung. I automatically took his words at face value. Maybe Jung was a sociopath and Seol was dating a sociopath....this show would be dark twisted show, not rom-com as it advertised. I even surprised the lack responses (fan's comments) about Crazy guy's statements. But toward the end, Jung was so sincere, smile a lot and genuinely care about Seol's safety. Now I suspend judgement and alot more inclined there is another misunderstanding about Jung.

Another awesome episode!! Can't wait for next Monday. At the end when Jung bumped his head on the desk, I feel like that scene was real! He wasn't supposed to bump his head and they decided to keep it in. Seols reaction at giggling at him felt like Go Eun laughing at PHJ. I love the development between our leads and cannot wait to see where it goes. I do worry that we're getting so much cute in the beginning, that we may be headed for trouble later on. I think Younggun(stalker boy) is going to create some glitch for JUNG-SEOL relationship, since it has been hinted here that according to YoungGun it was Jung who instigated him along with everyone. And we all know how manipulative Jung was(is) in his ways to get what he wants or harm as he wants. There are so many revelations to be made here.
It was quite surprising too to see that the drama has progressed further than the actual webtoon series and the writers are doing a really good job in modifying the storyline accordingly. Else it would have been a little boring for me to watch and read the same storyline in the webtoon as well as the drama.

I just came by to say something real fast I will probably come later and finish my thoughts on the episode once I finish watching it. Is anybody who has read the manga Fruits Basket thinks that the relationship between YJ and In ho similar to Yuki and Kyo's? I mean they both fight and In Ho is always challenging YJ and trying to be better than him. It became particularly familiar at the bar scene. Anyway, Thanks JB I forgot to thank GF yesterday.

In Hoooo don't gooooo!!! I have a feeling that this will be an arc in In ho's story and character growth, him leaving will most likely give him time to think things through, so while I am sad that he is leaving for now I am happy that he will get time to decide what he wants to do with his life. Does he want to live all his life blaming others for his misfortunes and being miserable? or will he decide to continue pursuing what makes him happy, playing the piano.

I kind of know the story with the stalker I read that part in the webtoon but I didn't get to the part that involves YJ so that will be a surprise for me. What I dread is that whatever it is it will eventually come up and most likely ruin YJ and Seol's relationship yet again, also what happened with the neighbor in the last episode.

I like that Seol has a spine and is not the victim. The way she defended herself and In Ho from the stalker when he threatened to go to the police, I have seen some character growth from her part and some has been thanks to In Ho. He teases her and she learns to defend herself and express her actual feelings to him, I think this is one of the major reasons he does this, to teach her and because well he just likes to mess with her.

Now YJ I thing today we learned a major thing that most likely contributes to his personality, when he talked to Seol about his relationship with his father. When he says that his father always had bigger expectations for him and expected him treat others with kindness, It may not be that he feels like a God and that he has to punish people for the wrong things they do, I might be wrong but maybe he feels like he has to be a parent to other people? Maybe he feels he has to teach them a lesson so that they can fix their lives because he had bigger expectations for them. He maybe feels that since he grew up like that it is the right way and everybody has to live like that to be successful. I might be wrong but that is what I read today from his talk with Seol.

Required fields are marked *

It's incredibly disturbing that Younggon totally ignores Seol's words and relies on things he may (?) have heard from others about her feelings. I mean, that's terrifying for Seol - she's facing a person who's fixated on her, but who proves time and time again that not only is he not listening, but he fully discounts anything she says.

Extremely not good, though I appreciate the drama/webtoon showing that this is a pattern that can happen with fixated people: they can go silent for a few months, then suddenly pop up again at the same volume and intensity. That's why it's so terrifying even when you don't hear from them - you know they could be out there, ready to spring out at any time.

The neutral way Jung said "There are people like that. People who get love easily" really got to me. He obviously knows he's not one of those people, and he doesn't seem bitter or angry about it. It makes his growing connection with Seol even more precious.

I love that the reason he started liking her was something kind and generous she did for him, when he wasn't even aware of it, much less asking for it.

This show is such a blast. I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I meant to comment on yestedays episode but I'll just do it here. It's really weird but I see myself in both seol and jung. I see myself in seol cause I hate people doing things for me or the idea of owing people, i see myself in jung because I have to admit, I have a one track mind and can admit that I'm selfish in that sense too, haha. It's kind of a scary thing to realize how your alike with a sort of creepy character but that last scene from yesterday's episode was so poignant.

I also really appreciated this episode. For the first time, I actually thought hong and seol made a cute couple. This episode was really warm and I felt full after watching it. I just noticed that both Seol and Jung have one syllable name, which is so cute, haha.

Seo kang joon is really killing it in this role. I just love when he's on screen and I always feel sad when he's not.

It's been a while that I've been addicted to any K drama. But Cheese has me undone. I almost didn't watch it! But watching PHJ in some of the MVs and trailers edged me closer. When I read comparisons with Pride and Prejudice (Austen), I had to take a look.

I love the lead characters and the lead roles. It's taken me a while to warm up to In-ho but now that he's shedding the bluster, I think I've got into his headspace.

It's a great drama evidenced by the amount of discussion it generates all over the web.

I was firmly in the Yoo Jung camp but this episode actually had me considering In Ho as a viable love interest. Pulled at the heart strings. Getting wet in the rain, cussing out that scary stalker, etc.

I still don't quite see him as the one for Seul but he could grow. He's friend zoned in my mind but maybe that's just me. I'm always slightly nervous around guys I like, esp in the beginning, while I'm very comfortable being pals with guys in general since I box and stuff.

But YJ brings his game in this episode too. The watch scenes :)) and the flashbacks to why he likes her. And when he tells her what she's always wanted to hear from someone...that compliment about her work ethic.

I also thought his comments about his Dad's expectations of his behavior show a good glimpse into why he might be the way he is.

I really enjoyed this episode. The only thing is that I wish more was being done about the stalker Younggon. I think Seul should have told YJ right away. To clear up the misunderstanding and also for them to be on guard. I also think In Ho could've called or contacted YJ to give him a heads up on who is hanging around his gf. Telling her to avoid him (especially as he In Ho wont be around) seems a really loose way to leave things. Idk, that's a very bad situation and I just know how badly it can escalate when you're dealing with someone who is completely out of touch with reality and he's already verbally abusing her and grabbing her.

Is it terrible that I'm glad YJ is also scary ( though in a different way) in this instance? If anyone deserves retribution, it's that creepy Younggon. Complete lack of respect and regard for other ppl's boundaries.

I've always sympathised with Jung because of exactly what you said - about his Dad's expectations. He's been told from a young age that his feelings didn't matter and regardless, he had to do what was "right, "nice", "do well" and "treat the Baeks well". I think that's probably a lot to do with why he's so detached, that he's learnt to hide his feelings and overt desires.

Yeah Jung comments about his and expectations on how Jung should act said alot about who YJ is now.

He was told not to get angry and that can seem cold, emotionless to other people when he doesnt react and have always that cold persona, face to people he doesnt see as close GF,friends.

You cant nurture kids like that expect everything from them while being warm to other people and then tell them even how to act.

I really am not hundred percent this argument ... Because this is how I grew ... This is how the culture where I come from is ...

In simple terms

Kids are seen not heard ...

What we felt or had to say didn't matter because we were kids and what do we know ...

This played a factor for JY but that's not really a reason .... And yes it affects you for must of your life ...

And even more so for JY who seems to find it had to mske friends ...

Jung scares me in a swoony way... Or maybe it was because Park Hae Jin played Jung brilliantly what with all of the changing of emotions from malicious to unbearably cute dork!
