Cheese in the Trap: Episode 4

Time for the pendulum to swing, and the thing about being in an overthinker’s brain is, there’s no end to the number of ways a thing can be read, analyzed, and interpreted. I’d say misinterpreted, but to be fair, our resident overthinker isn’t so far off-base when she’s trying to get a handle on someone who’s as transparent as glass—the kind that’s clear one moment, then foggy another, obscuring the view with hot-and-cold changes in mood that never quite give us enough warning.

EPISODE 4 RECAP

Jung walks Seol home and lingers at the door, then takes her by the wrist and asks her to date. Seol is so surprised that she stammers that she doesn’t know why he’d say that out of the blue, and that she’s never thought about having a boyfriend.

Jung takes this in and lets go of her wrist, as though to accept her refusal. Flustered, Seol instinctively grabs his hand back before realizing what she’s done, which endears her to me forever. She lets go right away, so frazzled she can barely form words, and starts saying that it’s not that she doesn’t like him…

“Then let’s date,” Jung says, smiling. “I think it’ll be okay if we do. Let’s.”

Seol nods nervously, and when he prods for a reply, she blurts, “Y-yes.”

“Good,” he says. Then he says good night, and Seol literally trips over herself in her haste to get inside. She’s is the most adorable bundle of nerves ever. She makes it to her room in disbelief, stealing glances at the hand that grabbed his.

Then she erupts into squeals, burying her head into her pillow, exclaiming, “This is crazy! It makes no sense!” She tries to reason through this unexpected twist, wondering why Jung would ask her out, and imagines extra versions of herself analyzing the situation.

They remind her that he’s never shown interest before and that he’d ignored her thoroughly last year, and decide Jung must be up to something.

“But why did you nod yes?” they ask Seol, who wonders that herself.

The next morning, she frets about how to face Jung and what to tell her friends, then recalls that the term’s over and it’s vacation now. She’s relieved to have this reprieve, although when she sees him at school, I note how she lights up and waves hello.

Jung returns her smile… and then just heads out with his friends. Huh?

Seol can’t help being disappointed at his nonchalance, and is distracted through her session with her guidance counselor. “Is he regretting it?” she wonders.

The session doesn’t go well, with the counselor shaking her head at Seol’s meager transcript—she has good grades, but no club activities, internships, or other activities. Why did she choose this major—what is her dream?

Seol thinks dejectedly how it’s hard enough for her to come up with next semester’s tuition, much less cultivate a dream. She worries that without a scholarship, she may have to take more time off to work.

When she visits her parents, she gently broaches the topic of money—but they’re in worse shape than she is, with her father losing yet more money to a string of failed business ventures. There’s a brother, too, and Mom asks Seol to give up her lodgings and commute from home, so they can use that money for both kids’ tuitions.

Seol can’t do anything but agree, though it’s a blow. She tries to convince herself that she never liked living in her tiny room anyway, and that a four-hour commute to school is for the best.

She wonders why she hasn’t heard from Jung, sighing that she doesn’t have anyone to ask for dating advice since she’s still on the outs with Bora. But Eun-taek calls her out to initiate the reconciliation, which starts out stiffly but soon warms up, since both friends are feeling sorry. Seol apologizes for not sharing about her situation, promising to try harder. Bora apologizes too, saying she’d felt hurt to know nothing, and asks that they both be more honest with each other.

Seol promises, and the friendly mood returns to the trio. Eun-taek makes passing mention of seeing Jung at school, and Seol jumps to ask questions, which tips her friends off that something’s up. She deflects that it’s nothing, but they remind her of her promise to be honest, and finally Seol blurts that Jung asked her to date. They think she’s joking until she goes off in a rant about how he asked out of the blue and hasn’t called and now she doesn’t know what to do.

Seol gets a call from the department office asking if she’s interested in a part-time job there. She’s puzzled at the offer dropping into her lap, but jumps to take it. Bora leaves her with the advice to call Jung and chat about her job and his vacation, saying, “Dating is timing.” (And I notice it seems Eun-taek has been pestering Bora to date him, to no avail.)

Seol ties herself into knots writing a text to Jung, telling him about her new job and asking what he’ll be doing over break. She sends it with bated breath, then leaps to read his reply, which he taps out quickly while playing video games.

Seol deflates to read, “Okay. That’s good. Have a good break.” Does that mean he doesn’t want to see her during vacation?

Break begins and Seol starts her job in the departmental office, working under the irascible department assistant. Everything she does gets criticized, whether it’s not showing up early enough or showing up too early or giving him the coffee he asked for instead of the one he now wants.

Jung drops by out of the blue to take Seol on a coffee break, telling the staff that they’re dating. It startles her, given his lack of communication, but he’s friendly and attentive and even asks if she hasn’t missed him, since he missed her when she hadn’t called.

Surprised, Seol says that his last text sounded like he didn’t intend to see her over break. Jung hadn’t realized she’d take it that way—he meant it at face value when he wished her a good vacation. Mortified, Seol asks herself, “What’s wrong with me? I feel so sorry.”

She mumbles an apology about not having any experience in relationships, and Jung smiles and suggests a date on the weekend.

On date day, Seol picks through her clothes, suddenly aware how drab they all are, thinking of In-ho’s passing comment about how she ought to dress in brighter clothes. She also recalls In-ho making fun of her “dog hair” and brushes out her curly bangs self-consciously.

Jung gets a refund notice from the computing class In-ha has dropped, and sees that she’s racked up a number of bills at cafes and malls. He’s unsurprised, and calls his father to suggest putting the pressure on her to get her act together. Why do I feel like this was your plan all along?

His mood feels rather chilly as he deals with the In-ha situation, but brightens as he texts Seol about their date, and suddenly he feels much younger and sweeter. That is certainly the paradox of Jung, isn’t it?

Fiddling with her straightened bangs, Seol runs into In-ho on her way to her date, and he takes one look at her frumpy outfit and laughs, saying she looks like a grandma.

Seol hears that he’s been applying to jobs and points out that his attire is just as inappropriate. In-ho honestly doesn’t see why, but she picks out the casual tee, the ripped jeans, and the bare feet in sandals, and chides him on making a good first impression.

He argues that she’s hardly one to be giving clothing advice, and she protests that she picked out her flashiest clothes. He laughs to realize she took his advice, and scoffs that she can’t be going to meet a guy like this, right? Heart sinking, Seol dashes back home to change.

Jung’s already waiting for her at the movies, smiling to see her in the distance. As she primps to her reflection, he raises a finger against her image in the distance, “patting” her head with his fingertip.

Seol apologizes for being late and offers to buy the popcorn, since she has a coupon. For some reason that gives Jung pause, and he suggests going to the cafe while they wait for their movie. Seol suggests an arcade instead, and gives him instructions on how to play the shooter game, only to have him shoot perfectly and log a record score. He sort of misses her double hi-five gesture, and she thinks how awkward this feels.

Then during the movie, Seol sighs that their tastes are different—he picked a boring foreign film, while she’d have rather seen an action flick. Yet when he asks if she’s bored, she lies that it’s fine.

In-ha’s shopping spree is cut short when her cards are frozen, and despite her best attempts to wheedle Chairman Yoo into changing his mind, he’s gently firm. He reminds her that she has a job offer at the company if she gets her computing certificate, and has paid for the first month. After that it’s up to her.

Chairman Yoo adds that “even Jung” felt she should learn to take care of herself, as though Jung is usually too nice. In-ha is left sputtering at Jung’s sneakiness, outraged that he’d dare cut her off.

Jung takes Seol to a fancy restaurant, where the prices make her fret. She even suggests that they don’t have to eat here, though he assures her that the food is good.

So she picks the cheapest item and assures him she’s fine with plain soup, and sinks when he orders expensive wine. She sees this as more proof of their differences and thinks, “I want to go home.”

In-ho takes Seol’s advice and dresses in nicer clothing for his next job interview, and gets the cleaning job. Then the boss comes by and likes the look of him, and before he knows it, he’s earned a nice stack of cash for shooting some ads for them.

With Jung ignoring her calls, In-ha tries her brother next, asking for money and pouring on the dramatics, insisting she’s going to starve and die. Against his better judgment, In-ho gives her most of his payday, saying this is really the last time.

He adds the warning to wise up since Jung is intent on cutting them off, but In-ha points out that it’s In-ho who’s the problem: “If you both cut the pride crap and you go back with head bowed, this would all be over.”

Jung drives Seol home, and makes conversation about her job. She says that she’d wanted to study English during the break but doesn’t have the time for it, and he offers to put her in contact with a friend who runs an English academy, who’d give her a discount.

Once home, Seol wonders if all dates are so exhausting, then grabs for food since dinner left her starving.

In-ho calls Jung repeatedly until he finally answers, taking issue with Jung cutting off In-ha before she could get a job. Jung merely says, “I warned you not to hang around the people near me.”

In-ho doesn’t get what he means until Seol steps inside the convenience store, then puts it together: She’s the reason. But he doesn’t want to stop hanging around her, he thinks.

Seol joins him at the food counter, and they fall into an easy bickering pattern. He notes her massive amounts of food and she comments on his improved clothing choices. He bugs her for money to buy kimchi, and they fight over the pack before splitting it down the middle.

When she notices him using chopsticks with both hands and remarks on it, In-ho explains that he was left-handed before an accident: “This hand—Yoo Jung made it that way.”

Seol stops and stares, and he just tells her to be careful: “If you come crying later when you get hurt, I won’t help.”

Jung fields a call from his father, who tells him about talking to In-ha and cautions him not to press the matter too much. Jung tells him not to worry, and turns to his sketchbook. Okay, so he works on intricate paper cutouts and colorful drawings in his spare time. Not sure what that detail will lead to, but for now, his meticulous artistic hobbies have been duly noted.

As they walk home, In-ho tells Seol the kimchi doesn’t count as one of his owed meals. She sighs that she’s barely managing to feed herself as it is, and complains about the job where she gets scolded no matter what she does.

In-ho asks, “So what, you just take it? Well, it did seem your life was pretty frustrating. You’re always saying, ‘No, it’s okay’ and ‘Yes, I understand’ and ‘I’ll work hard,’ right? If you live like that, you’ll spend your whole life only suffering.” She’ll always get the short end of the stick, he says.

When he suggests beef for their next dinner, she snaps at In-ho, calling him her biggest stress right now, worrying that he’ll mooch off her forever. In-ho tells her approvingly to let her feelings out, just like this.

Once alone, Seol thinks that In-ho doesn’t seem like a bad person, and wonders what’s between him and Jung. Just then, Jung texts her to let her know he spoke with the English academy and tells her to check it out. She’s grateful but can’t help worrying, “Is it okay to just keep receiving things?”

She texts him a thank-you, adding, “And today… I had fun. I feel sorry to be treated to so much. Next time I’ll buy dinner.” He agrees, and they wish each other a good night.

The next day, Seol goes to the English academy to sign up, and finds out that she’s been marked for free tuition. Then she runs into In-ho in the hall, and discovers that he works here, partly as ad model, partly as assistant, partly as janitor. He declares cheerfully that they’ll be seeing lots of each other from now on, though she seems less thrilled than he does.

She comes home as the landlord’s grandson is visiting to fix a rickety window, and asks him to take a look at hers too, especially since there’s a neighborhood weirdo reportedly on the loose. Seol takes a call from Jung as her window is being worked on, and when she mentions the free class, Jung acts like it’s news to him.

It isn’t, of course, and he thanks the academy owner for the favor, admitting that Seol is his girlfriend. Then his eyes fall on the new academy brochures, and he freezes to recognize In-ho.

At work, the uptight department assistant dumps a pile of work on Seol and tells her to complete it by the end of the day. She thinks of In-ho’s advice and stands up for herself, telling him that it’s too much work for anybody to complete in a day, and he has to back down when someone else indicates it’s not necessary to have it completed that quickly.

Jung drops by to take Seol on a break, and she thanks him for his help with English class. She briefly considers mentioning In-ho when he asks about the academy, then supposes it might make Jung feel bad and answers merely that there’s nothing special to report.

Jung smiles and says goodbye, but his face falls as he walks off, thinking of her “nothing much” answer.

Jealous classmate Joo-yeon drops by the office, and a staffer mentions that her friend Jung was around earlier to see Seol. Seol tries to interrupt before she says too much, but it’s enough to tip Joo-yeon off to their dating status.

Joo-yeon asks to talk to her, and starts by explaining that she doesn’t like Seol, which is why she sent the homeless man to her. She says she hadn’t meant for Seol to get hurt and even went to Jung to ask for help—but Jung just left without doing anything.

Seol shuts her down when she starts to turn the blame on Jung, saying that what matters is that Joo-yeon initiated the incident. Joo-yeon fires off a passive-aggressive “Fine, I’m sorry, all right?” that sounds nothing like an apology. Seol returns, “You’re not sorry in the least, are you?”

She tells Joo-yeon not to show herself in front of her again, and Joo-yeon says to herself, “You two are both really harsh.”

Flashback. Seol and the homeless man are escorted out of the building, and Joo-yeon watches from around the corner, feeling guilty to see Seol holding her bleeding arm. Jung joins her, having called security, and tells her she should have stopped earlier.

Joo-yeon grabs his arm pleadingly, saying she really didn’t think it would go this far. Couldn’t he let it go this once? Jung gives her a cold smile and agrees, “But that’s it.” He reaches up to cup her face with his hand, startling her, and says, “Don’t show yourself in my sight again.”

So Joo-yeon walks away determined to never tell Seol the rest of the story—that Jung stepped in to help, and that he’s much colder than Seol realizes.

Seol can’t understand why Jung would act that way, then ask to date. She ignores his call after English class, her head full of thoughts.

In-ho intercepts her and clocks her mood, then enlists her help in folding test papers into airplanes. She points out that his planes all crash, teasing him when hers outfly his. He just thinks to himself, “She smiled.”

It’s raining when they step outside, and neither has an umbrella. In-ho proposes that the loser of a race to the store will buy one, ignoring her protests, and starts running. Seol finds herself running after him, and they laugh as they race through the rain.

In-ho gets to the store first, but Seol yanks him back and overtakes him, claiming the victory. On the walk home, they bicker about each other’s competitive spirits (and rule-breaking methods), and it’s only now that In-ho asks why she looked so down earlier.

She tries to say it’s nothing, but he doesn’t believe her and prods for the truth. She asks if he was telling the truth about his hand, and he guesses something happened between her and Jung.

She says no, but In-ho says, “Don’t just say no, and talk. You’ll age yourself this way.”

They round the corner, and Seol sees him first: Jung, waiting outside her front door. He addresses her only, saying he’d heard about the neighborhood prowler and checked on her windows and doors.

In-ho scoffs that the lofty Jung would spare concern for someone else, but Jung shocks him with the reply, “Because she’s my girlfriend.”

COMMENTS

From a narrative standpoint, there were a lot of things I really enjoyed about this episode, even if the plot took a less giddy turn. I wasn’t disappointed, necessarily, but I do enjoy me some giddy, cute honeymoon romances so I wouldn’t have complained for more sweetness. But this isn’t a conventional romance drama in the sense that the focus of Cheese in the Trap isn’t the couple getting together. Purely being in a relationship is no guarantee of anything, not even of the couple’s feelings for each other, and especially not when both halves of the couple have some things to work through, both individually and together.

We’ve seen the signs that Jung liked Seol (or was at least intrigued by her) early on, but it felt realistic and understandable that she’d be confused by what she sees as mixed signals. If you have the assurance that he’s being serious about his feelings, it seems like Seol is way overthinking this, but given that we mostly see everything from her perspective, it’s not unreasonable that she’s uncertain of his motives. Maybe it’s unfair that she doesn’t take him at his word, but you know what, this is the downside of being a cipher—you have to earn the trust.

I suspect that Jung feels that people need to earn trust from him, but I’d bet he doesn’t see where that applies to him as well. It strikes me that as nice as he can be—and I mean genuinely nice to Seol, not the fake-nice facade he puts on for the world—he approaches the world from a mighty self-centered place, where everything is on his terms or not at all.

The previous episode touched on Seol’s need to learn how to communicate, and we’ve seen how it’s tripped her up in various ways—already she’s had friendship hiccups (and class troubles) because of her tendency to be too inside her own head and not express her thoughts aloud. She’s also cluing in to her need to fix this about herself, and it seems like this’ll be one of the significant parts of her emotional trajectory.

In some senses it feels like Jung is ahead of Seol in figuring out how to deal with exploiters and moochers and standing up for himself, but other, significant ways, he feels way behind her. He also has the tendency to decide things himself and act on those decisions, just like Seol, except she’s at least self-aware. He doesn’t seem to consider it a problem, and I’ll be interested to see how (if?) change is prompted in him.

I’m drawn to the In-ho development because so far, he feels like he’s suffering on his own, still hurt by Jung while Jung has put everything coldly behind him. I’m inclined to think both guys are hurting the same, but I like that In-ho is the opposite of Jung, completely in touch with how he feels (to his detriment, sometimes, in that he has no filter).

And if he’s the guy who can prod Seol into standing up for herself and expressing herself in positive ways, I have to be rooting for him, at least in part. I don’t know if I’ll be torn on the romantic ‘ship, because I’m a sucker for a good OTP, but the second leads always get my sympathies. I’m not swayed by the “he deserves her more” argument inasmuch as nobody is entitled to someone else’s love, but we can’t ignore how uncomfortable Seol is around Jung, and how comfortable she seems in contrast when she’s with In-ho.

Of course, you can argue that things are easy with In-ho because she doesn’t care about him, and she’s stiff with Jung because she likes him too much to relax. But I’ve gotta admit to feeling a sinking feeling when she was out on a date with her boyfriend and could only think, “I want to go home.” And all episode, the word she kept repeating in regards to the relationship was “awkward.”

In a different drama, this would be a key sign that they weren’t meant to be together, no matter how they might feel in the moment, because she wasn’t being true to herself or honest about her feelings (it’s this dynamic about the couple that I really loved about Let’s Eat 2, for instance). But that isn’t to say awkwardnesses can’t be overcome, and couples can’t learn to communicate. I’m happy to let the show explore that gradually, though I wouldn’t mind a few kisses thrown in to help move things along…. Skinship is communication, right?

Thank you for the recaps.

I really, really like this show. The adaptation is spot on (reminds me of Nodame Cantabile j-ver), the PD is great, acting is so good, and the OST is the best.

Looking forward to next week's episodes.

The newest track they've released is "Such," sung by Kang Hyun Min and Urban Zakapa's Jo Hyun Ah.

ahhh thank yoU! just marathoned all 4 episodes and i am hooked! I dont know what to make of YJ, he's hot but creepy... that face cupping part was really...scary. I wonder what the motivations are? I mean she is this mouse trapped in this maze right?

Also, I dont know if Seol's overthinking nature is taking over me but I can't help but question some of his motives. He seems manipulative and...yea. I can't put my finger on it. But I still ship them weirdly enough. She does interact very comfortably and naturally with IH, but still like her with Jung.

Same here.

They all have problems that needs fixing. Jung needs to learn not to want to control everything while Seol needs to learn how to communicate her feelings. While In Ho needs to be more in control of his feelings. In Ha...just needs to go away.

Jung's art things shows me a big chunk of how he psychological make up, it's his way of feeding his need to control, to drown out the world and dealing with stress. Coloring books especially is really popular with the psychological crowd to deal with stress. It's a set problem. Here, follow the lines, color inside the lines, choose whatever color you want, and soon you'll have this sense of simple accomplishment that feeds your soul. The colors that you choose will also reflect how you feel.

Jung also needed to communicate more, to express how he feels instead of taking decisions into his own hands. It's been emphasized that Jung and Seol are actually very much alike, on episode 3 it was their way of taking a problem on themselves, while in this episode, their ability to cut off people from their life once they crossed a line.

We see how Seol's personality is shaped by the situation of her family, how she's independent and doesn't rely on anybody, since her family doesn't even help with her tuition. In fact, she'd have to sacrifice for her family. I feel kind of sad that she'd have to move back to that kind of environment.

On that date though, we see the problem between Jung and Seol in general: That Jung just decides on things without asking what Seol would like. That Seol is too tentative to actually say what she'd prefer. Communication would solve this.

As for her connection with InHa, you can say that it's because she met him as an equal while with Jung and Seol there is an imbalance of power with Jung being her sunbae (which matters more than you think) and that she's slowly being beholden to him more and more. We can see there's an attraction there, but Seol's wariness about Jung wasn't solved satisfactorily so her brain will always give out warning signals. That's an obstacle right there.

Then again, both boys also feed her suspicion against each other.

In my mind everything between the three of them could be solved if someone would trap all three in a room and don't let them out until everything is clear (but with Jung and Seol having problem with communicating, they'd probably die in there)

That is an interesting explanation regarding the psychological behaviour and Jung's hobby in art. Thanks for the info!

I dont like at all how In-Ho is forcing, acting like Seol is a long time pal, bro he can joke everything about when he just met her. Thats why is not awkward with him. She never saw an romantic tension with him to overthink like with Jung.

I dont like how he is forcing his feelings, his hurt POV about Jung on Seol. Seol doesnt have anything to do with their history, problem. In the preview he is troubling Seol by the fact she is Jungs girlfriend. He is a terrible friend to tell her how he hates the guy she likes.

Sure Jung is cold, could learn to not decide things on his own when he suspects Seol is lying about meeting Inho at the academy etc

The only good thing about Inho with him Seol is he told to her stand up for herself. He is a crybaby about what happened with Jung, cant get past his hurt feelings. More selfcentered than even Jung.

Someone in their comments likened this drama to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice (my first and favorite romance ever!). Since I was unacquainted with the webtoon, I hesitated to comment.

But more and more I am beginning to see similarities to Yoo Jung with Mr. Darcy, In Ho with Mr. Wickham and Seol with Lizzy.

Lizzy was a lot more forthright and open in her manners and expressions than Seol, though, something I hope will change in later episodes...

But characterizing Jung as Mr. Darcy and In Ho with Mr. Wickham is spot on. They are even guilty of the same things! LOL.

0

Mr. Wickham was evil. A second lead can't be that!

0

We don't know the whole story about the broken hand, only seen recollections from In Ho's perspective.

We've seen In Ha mooching off Jung's father's generosity (for years) and I am in full support of Yoo Jung cutting her off. Waiting for In Ha to find a job and become independent first before cutting her off, is like waiting for the Red Sea to dry. Not. happening. any. time. soon. He's better off cutting her off, at least that would give her the impetus to stand on her own feet. Why would she feel the urge to work or get a career for herself when she can freeload all she wants on a rich guy? Ugh!

In Ho has a lot more pride and self esteem in my eyes. I quite like him too. Wickham was very likable and admirable before we knew what he tried to do to Mr. Darcy's sister. But In Ho must have done something that set Yoo Jung off against him. For all Yoo Jung's coldness, he never provokes an unsolicited attack, but only responds to people's malice in a very cold way.

Also, Wickham, just like In Ho, tried to get Lizzy's affection by disclosing his bad relationship with Mr. Darcy, and trying to pin the blame ALL on Mr. Darcy - I see a similarity between that and what In Ho is doing with Seol. She doesn't have the full picture, only his version of events.

More like Twilight..

Edward = creepy and good = YJ

Jacob= sunshine= In Ho

Smart, itnrovert, in her head, prefers aloofness at some level = Bella = HS

0

Everywhere people analyze and say that YJ never takes an action on someone not deserving of it.. and hence with In Ho also, something must have happened..

But the biggest contradiction to that is HS.. and the first year at college...

She never did anything to him.. did not cling to him..nothing..

only thing YJ can accuse her of is sneering at him/judging him/ and saying Hi which would have probably come across as wannabe attitude..

But none of it is in league with the others he has been 'punishing'.. therefore, i do wonder..

Also, as per webtoon..apparently even though YJ doesn't like In Ha .. he is always there when she asks for him.. and the only time he starts being cold is since he got infatuated with HS..

0

Nice! I really liked your comment - especially the points about Seol and Jung's personality similarities being the theme of two episodes and why Jung and Seol's relationship is awkward.

What's interesting is that unlike the normal k-drama male/female stoic/bubbly dynamic, what draws Jung and Seol together are their similarities. In-ho plays more of the bubbly heroine role. All three have a lot to learn from each other and it would be amazing if they were all trapped in a room together.

@Adal - there's no way that Seol os Lizzy, Lizzy is the most opinionated person ever and considering that it was during Regency era where women's opinions are frown upon.
I wouldn't go that far with Jung and Mr.Darcy similarities, its hard for them to have something in common when they lived in different era.

0

I'm having the same problem. He said something innocuous to the assistant guy at the office on his first visit with Seol and my brain immediately translated it to 'I'll be watching you'. There's no indication that he meant it that at all, but I still took it as a warning to treat Seol well. Her POV has ruined me.

He reminds me of Nam Goong Min - similar face, similar mouth, similar acting style. I keep thinking about Nam Goong Min's character in Secret Hotel, so nice and calm and capable on the outside but a murderer on the inside...and I don't trust him, either. That part when he gently cupped SY's face and told her he never wanted to see her again was chilling. Lots of CEO's are psychopaths, according to a recent article, and looking at him I can believe it

I think Jung is too manipulative and I don't think Seol is overthinking it about Jung's interaction with her. I'm sure any girl would be puzzled and "what's with this guy" if he asks you to start dating him and he never contacts you, ignores you and then just casually put it on her like she was the one that was weird for reading his text "the wrong way." Anyone would have read his curt text of "have a great vacation" to mean exactly that: I won't be seeing you so have a great vacation, NOT I plan to see you every day so I'm sure you will have a great vacation! WTF, right? And it's HER fault for reading his messages and intent wrong? Hold up buddy, that's NOT how relationships work.

I know Jung is cute but cute isn't everything. If a girl has to lie about having a good time during a date... that means no to a second date. Also, he doesn't seem to get her AT ALL. This is a girl who asked to go eat triangle kimbop the last time you asked her to eat with her. WHY would you think she'd be totally cool with an uber expensive meal? That's clearly him thinking about himself more than wanting to get to know her better and know what kind of person she is. And what was up with his reaction to the coupon bit? Hey buddy, not everyone is born with a rich dad, we use these things called coupons and line up during sales.

Sure, I know how this story goes so of course it's no cliff hanger that she is ending up with Jung and In Ho is the second lead. But, she is CLEARLY more comfortable with In Ho. She laughs (how many times has she laughed with Jung? Umm... I count zero), jokes around, bickers over kimchi and has fun. And their chemistry is out of this world! Every scene with Jung is... snore... but I sit up whenever she is with In Ho. Even though the length of time is shorter it's much deeper, more meaningful, and just more fun and refreshing. Also, at the same time, HE is the spring board against whom she is learning more about herself and growing. They both are. So, again, why is she ending up with Jung? It MUST be a twilight universe.

I LOVED the rain scene. They looked so super cute and fun together. I wish we had more scenes with In Ho.

As for Jung, he is too damn manipulative. I wonder what he will do to In Ho now that he found out In Ho works at the tutoring academy... SEE! This is NOT the kind of questions and thoughts you are supposed to have about the Leading man. He is NOT supposed to be plotting sinister things, crushing people's hands, stalking girls, and doing creepy things behind the heroine's back. Unless there is some HUGE misunderstanding that will be revealed to the audience (i.e., Seol dreamt it all!), I'm not sure how much I will like Jung by the end.

Also, I would've acted like Seol too if someone like Jung were to ask me out. It's like, DUDE you made other people make my life miserable my first year in college. I avoided you like the plague because I thought you were...

I think I wrote too much because it cut off my previous thoughts.. sorry beanies for rambling!! Anyway, I was just saying to folks who think Jung is super cute with Seol... did y'all forget the scene in episode 1 when Jung stepped all over her stuff when she fell down the stairs and dropped her papers?? And he didn't even help! He just stepped all on her shit and was like, "you should be careful" and walked away. Wut??? Who is dating THAT guy after that incident??

OMG I AGREE WITH EVERYHTIN YOU SAID!!

I'm showing inho n Seol so hard I think I might break something. But I know he's second lead so even though I find them soo much more compatible and interesting, I have to remind myself not to get too invested.
But with their chemistry being off the charts I think I might burn with this ship.

Yeah...there's no doubt i agree with what you're saying, but i think thats the whole point of this drama and why its so popular and refreshing. USUALLY one would never expect the "leading man" to be that way but I personally find it very interesting.

He has said and done some questionable things but so far nothing has been downright malicious. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt as no one is perfect. Sometimes i get sick and tired of the typical perfect nice guy and i think it gives Jung a lot of dimension that I don't see in other male leads.

PLUS i actually think seol is pretty intense herself (the scene where she told off the biotch). In any other korean drama, i would have expected the heroine to just accept the apology OR be a weaksauce and cry LOL so in some ways i think theyre very similar and could work out.

Also, i don't doubt Jung's feelings for Seol. I feel that they are genuine (he smiles to himself when he thinks of her and he does seem to care about her). I think sometimes his personality overshadows his lack of experience in dating. I do think there is definitely a disconnect with the audience because we dont know WHY THE HELL he suddenly started liking her but i would like to think that it will be explained before the series ends.

IM OBSESSED

You seem to forget that in a relationship it works both ways. Why does he always have to eat the triangle kimpab but she wouldn't have to learn about his world? I'm not saying you're completely wrong here, just that there's two sides of the story. They both have to work towards understanding each other and it's not like only one of them has to work.

Exactly! Yes he's oblivious, but a lot of the reason she was uncomfortable was her own insecurity.

Heart matters

Exactly i was really annoyed with Seol the whole date with Jung. She lied to him about liking everything and then overthinking how they dont have anything incommon. You have to adapt, understand the other persons world. So he is rich, likes really good food, wine whats wrong with that? He ate cheap food he didnt like for her!

She overthinked the whole date to death. Just speak and say i want an action film, other things. He cant read her mind....

0

I agree with you on all points. I think that in real life, if I were Soel's friend, I'd tell her to just stay away from Jung.

I like their pairing in the drama though. I think they'd be no conflict if Soel liked InHo.

I like that we are shown how different Jung and Soel are. The date showed us how Jung has lived so far. He's always been "giving" people little things of monetary value. He brings coffee for the admin staff. He brings a gift for the tutoring academy chief. He finds a way for Soel to get free classes. That's the only way he thinks he can show his feelings. The date was his way of treating her well. He has no clue that she is not comfortable.

It's sad in a way that he thinks his only value is "money". He can't imagine that Soel might actually want to spend time with "him" rather than eat at an expensive place and get free classes.

What he thinks she expects from him is exactly what makes her uncomfortable.

So really, he needs her more than she needs him.

You make good points, aoiaheen!

And that's why this drama is so much fun to watch - to see them learn about these things.
It's lovely how none of the characters are just 'that', you know, they're complicated and multilayered.

0

I just marathoner 4 eps and find this drama was tiring: tiring for the characters that inhabit this world, and tiring the viewers who try to see things thru their eyes.

Why is school life so hard in SK? Why can't a money-strapped student be left alone to work her part-time jobs and study? So many bullies, and no protection!

Why is liking a member of the opposite sex so hard? Why all the suspicions and calculations, back and forth, that'd make anyone's head spin? If the date is so "awkward", if you feel so unsafe about a guy, just say no.

I feel tired for them just watching the drama.

0

But that's the charm right.. he is not your regular hero..

He doesn't need to be a black or a white..because none of us are..

People can lie but even us in our real lives do that.. all of us must have been mean to someone, made fun of someone, participated in a malicious gossip at some time, really hated someone, must have tried to extract or thought of extracting revenge on someone...

So that's that.. here is a personality type (not usually explored in dramas).. and we have an interesting universe of two relatively refreshing personalities..

As far as love goes.. for some weird reason.. you can have the most perfect guy around you..but you can end up falling for the most imperfect guy.. NOT sure if love is that chemical and biological (in theory yes.. but is that exactly how it realizes itself)... else a boy and a girl who are very very very good friends... will always go down the romance trajectory :P :P

I agree with you EZ. I really enjoy YJ's character. In real life, people don't come as pure as snow, as many Kdramas like to portray their hero(es). I enjoy that YJ is layered, and I do not see anything wrong with taking a stand against others that we dislike. He get used with people taking advantage of him, and he used that sometimes to his benefit. Does not make him a bad guy. If Seol romantically involve with In Ho, doesn't it going to be like any other Kdrama, ah the good guy, gets the good girl, and they are all very similar bla bla bla. How refreshing it is to have a hero that is not one layered, I enjoy his Jekyll and Hyde side. Give me more Hyde side too, some of us also like bad boys. And Seol is not a meek heroine that would crumble with someone like YJ. She just need to be more secure and more frank to how she feels and stand on her own ground. I do not wish Seol have romantic relationship with In Ho, reading the manhwa, and read on the forum, it seems that many also debating on whether Seol's and In Ho's relationship has romantic tendency or not, I have just two words for that. OH NO! don't you dare Kdrama, after giving us a taste of layered heroes with dark side and learning to love to turn to the usual path. NO!!!!

0

Idk who I like better at this moment but...

I definitely see more chemistry between Seol and Inho!! She kept thinking how awkward the day was but with Inho they are just soo comfortable together. Compatible too.... But the hero is already decided I guess, I better hop off the Inho shop before I drown with it.

Jung also has a spooky habit of slightly invading the other person's space when he's about to say something chilling. He leans forward, he steps forward, he touches a face. It's compelling as all hell and probably insanely effective (given his desire is usually to intimidate), but it is very spooky.

You see it all the time in animals actually and guys. It's an establishment of dominance and a way to provoke a primal reaction, you only let the people that you trust to be inside your personal space, so when it's someone that you don't trust it's a threat. Our brains perceives that threat and it makes the scene and Jung's actions and words more chilling. Great acting choice.

Thanks for the insight. Psychological body cues are so interesting and well played here.
I wonder about cultural differences in how body language is perceived. In Chinese contemporary dramas there is a lot of fingers being pointed close to another's face in heated discussions. To me it is very aggressive, almost like a fist, rather than merely a emphasis. In another Chinese drama, for the main couple's first kiss he grasped, not cupped, her chin the whole time. Despite the twinkle lights it did not come off as romantic to me. It was more like a parent/toddler interaction- "look at me when I'm talking to you", very dominating.

The Kdrama wrist-grab is notorious for being a strangely non-romantic gesture as interpreted internationally.

If you like me you'll grab me by the hand. If you're looking to boss me around, you'll grab my arm. (And I will hit you and make you let go.)

0

OMG, that was really creepy.

Also, was I the only one who noticed the veiled threat Yoo jung gave to the TA when he said that he would be coming to visit Seol everyday - that it would not be pleasant for the TA if YJ saw seol being ordered and slaved around by him?

0

Required fields are marked *

Actually, I found myself understanding the face-cupping action.

Joo Yeun had been a casual friend of Yoo Jung's for at least a year or two. Even if he had no romantic intentions towards her, he thought her smart enough and in terms of everyday life, had spent time in her company at college. When he first came upon her admitting she had swiped the report - and this was after he knew how Seol had worked through the lesson to get the report re-done. He was disappointed but he told her he'd forget it that once. Then when Joo Yeon ran after him to report to him about the drunk man - it was clear she was using the situation to a) make Seol look bad, i.e. she was argumentative with the drunk man b) make herself look good for looking for help, and snidely implying how the incident before was just a misunderstanding since Seol is "harsh". So he basically tells her he doesn't buy it, and that she should go sort out her mistake.

Then he returns after reporting to security to find out that Seol did actually get hurt, and Joo Yeon is still unrepentant - that's when he decided he's done with her. It may have been eerie that he offered a tender gesture together with words that were cold and harsh - but I find it understandable. He was also saying good-bye to his old acquaintance, or at least, to his old impression of her, and feeling regret she was such a disappointment. And to be frank - she is hugely disappointing for someone who is pretty and smart, and has advantages and yet was pretty despicable.

Would it have been less creepy if he had shouted at her or almost hit her for being so terrible? I think we'd find that more easily understandable because it's the obvious emotion - but Jung keeps his emotions closely checked - so we only see this weird mix of him giving her his decision, and this gesture that is misaligned - and hence it feels weird.

Great analysis

While Jung can justify his covert manipulations according to his own sense of particular justice, he does not tolerate the attempts of others to use him. He is generous with his gifts of food and drink, but being expected to provide makes him angry. I think it was an overheard comment to that extent by the bossy sunbae that motivated Jung to offer up the incriminating receipt. Being maneuvered into the drunken homeless guy scene and to a lesser extent the set up with Seol's friend also make him angry.

Required fields are marked *

Thanks. Yes, I agree. Basically, Sang Chul was pretty disrespectful of him - it's one thing to say, yes, he's generous, but another, to imply he's so dumb they can just use him and he won't mind. Show some gratitude, at least? I think that did anger him, and also, then to overhear that Sang Chul was embezzling the funds - again, that's pretty low. I think Jung didn't confront him about the embezzlement directly, because in a way, he does feel above it all - like he doesn't want to get involved with Sang Chul. So knowing the other guy was already angry, he offered the receipt.

However, when he realised it was Sang Chul who messed with Seol's class sign-up, that' when he did involve himself and let Sang Chul know he knows exactly what he is.

I don't understand why everyone is saying YJ is creepy. Ok, his character suppose to be cold and borderline Autism. But isn't most Kdrama male lead was written in such a 'creepy' way? Kim Tan in The Heir is very much a stalker and forced himself into Cha Eun Sang's heart. Do Min Joon in My Love from Another Star stalks SongYi for centuries, even after she reincarnated. How is that not creepy? Ohh and Healer, blind folded kissed by a stranger, creepy much? And that guy basically can tap into all your communication device and knows your every moves. Nice soundtracks covers all the creepiness. And for Jung they play some eerie creepy background music, so that makes him looks like the boogeyman. :)

Ugh that's my issue. The interactions with her and Inho are too cute! I end up favouring him more when I didn't really in the webtoon. In the webtoon Inho was more rough with Seol and Jung had a better rapport with her. Jung gives her advice about speaking out her feelings and etc. Their date was also more comfortable. I don't think Jung made her uncomortable over menu prices in the webtoon. But in the drama I feel for her man, the steak was like $77! Where i live good steak is like $30 max. For $77 dollars the steak should have gold powder on it!

0

Me too, Team Jung! :p

In my opinion, Jung's problem is his manipulative and selfish nature, but he is a husband material : he is smart and responsible. Inho is indeed more friendly and fun, but I haven't seen him as someone who has a vision of what he's going to be in the future. Seol is smart and she is struggling to study and to make a better future. Compared to Inho who wander around and dont know what to do for himself, I think Seol is more similar with Jung. She just needs to communicate more with him (and so does the opposite), in order to oversome their differences.

About Jung being husband material, I'm not so sure about that.

I don't think anyone would be happy living with someone as creepily manipulative and control freaky as Jung. He'll take all the decisions in their life and his wife won't even realize she doesn't have a say in her own life.

Don't get me wrong, I love Jung as the hero and ship him with Soel. But he has to change before Soel will ever be happy with him.

Required fields are marked *

That is what I was saying : Jung is a husband material, and he still can change / adapt with Seol. Both boys have minuses and it just depends on whose minuses that you can take. Regarding Seol, like I said in my posts, they can still communicate and change to a better person. My old superior is almost like Jung, manipulative and cunning. But, he also has good sides, can become a good friend (with me and the rest of our team), a good husband for his wife, and a good dad for his kids.

Regarding Jung, yes he loves to control, but it doesn't mean that he controls every time. There are times when he gives the decisions to Seol, and he didn't push her to do something until she is already comfortable with it (for example : going out together). If people argue that he pushed Seol to become his GF, then I'll say that he didn't do anything wrong. My ex boyfriend also persuaded me to try to have a relationship with him, and also other guy who wanted to go out with me. That's what boys do when they have interests towards girls, they persuade you to go out with them. Jung also can ask for an apology to Seol , without Seol even had to ask him. He also has been trying to live in 'Seol's way of live', by eating that triangular kimbap. Don't forget that, at first, he didn't want to eat that. But because Seol wanted it, he tried to and ended up liking it. People can also argue that he had mistreated him in the past and caused Seol to want to take a leave. I'll say, yes he did that in the past, but haven't he changed already ? Everyone can dislike other people, but after it's done, then it's done . It's time to move on.

For me, everything that Jung had done are signs that he has the potential to become a good partner. He and Seol just have to adapt each other, in order for the relationship to work out.

0

hi luna, once again, you said what was on my mind! "jung is husband material" - he can be the best oppa to Seol.- the "I will protect and provide for you" He-Man. and it's not like he cannot come down to her level and try to loosen up - he is sincere towards here and altho he is egotisctical and controlling - the way he pushed her to date him was somewhat predatory and wolfish - but like your said, that's exactly what guys do towards a gal they are interested in. that's real life! but Jung would never harm her.

In ho is fun to be around and fool around with but seol , with all her disadvantaged background and introvert nature, would be able to better make her way in the world with Jung's support.

In Ho and Seol together would be a disaster in real life - both would end up being bullied or getting into fights all the time!

I dunno about others, but I would choose jung anytime for the long haul.

Seol is completely different in the webtoon. She doesn't get dragged around and forced into things like in the drama. She's supposed to be a bit insecure, rather discreet, but smart and will stand up for herself when pushed too far. She's well put together. She's not the wimpy damsel in distress that's depicted in the drama. I don't know if it's because of the script or the actress but Seol's character is not supposed to be like that.

Required fields are marked *

in the webtoon she's not completely dragged around, i agree, but she is still being used by both sides. by inho, for the money and the company and the meals mostly and more obviously, and by yoojung.... in more subversive ways (for his own amusement?)

and yeah there's a slight disconnect w/ the character imo, but i feel like it's bc i've been projecting my own interpretation of hong seol onto the drama, like i imagined her to be different so the fact that go eun's playing her in this way kinda seemed off to me?

i don't think she's some kind of "wimpy damsel in distress" though... i reread a few chapters a couple of days ago from season 1 and a lot of the reactions were followed very closely to the webtoon; i mean she stood up accordingly to TA heo, she rebuffed jooyeon for her half-assed apology, she very firmly implied she thought yoojung reported on sangchul early on without shying away... perhaps these actions weren't as strong as i imagined it to be, but i don't agree with labeling the drama version as "damsel in distress".... taking this at face value, as just a drama, i think this portrayal works for the direction they're taking it in

0

Jung. I tend to be team whoever the lead likes unless they're undeniably awful. Luckily, I don't feel that way about Jung. Their dynamic is awkward and uncomfortable, but I think that's interesting and refreshing to watch. It will be nice to see them maybe overcome it and learn to trust each other.

I do like In-ho too though. Someone on a different post said he was like Tae Kwang and I sort of agree. He has that warmth to him mixed with the rebellious (and looks) that I could imagine Se-gi having in his youth. The actor is doing a great job, the writing and portrayal make him so endearing and I really enjoy watch his scenes with Seol and hope their relationship stays strong.

Agree with your first paragraph. You may have hit on why I'm enjoying this so much. I've always liked slice-of-life, but I haven't seen many (or any?) about college students. It's nice to watch.

admittedly i only paid attention to this drama because i followed the webtoon and loved the complexity of the characters themselves, but yeah i realized when it became a drama adaptation that, wow? college students??? not 28 year old actors playing high school students? (not that i'm in any position to say anything about that when park haejin is 32 playing a 3rd year college student bUT) not 30 year old chaebol bosses everywhere?? and the scenes of seol staying up finishing projects i was like !!! me!!! this is me!!!

and re: jung yes. i like that she's an anomaly to him and that he finds her interesting enough to make an effort with her, getting to know her (in constrast to his relationship with like, everyone else), and he's still extremely closed off and self-centered in a subtle way and she's inadvertently kind of a pushover when it comes to him-- that it makes the dynamic uncomfortable but so... intriguing... like you don't know what kind of curveball jung is gonna throw bc you've never seen him interact like this with anyone before?

and i'm finding i like drama inho more than i like webtoon inho! he's cute and sociable with her, a little rough around the edges and really stuck between a rock and a hard place wrt his sister and jung, so for him to be so playful with her is kind of like a breath of fresh air in this drama? Seol not showing it clearly, but she indeed always complaining and assuming peoples around her, how they behaviour and treat her, IN HER HEAD. That is showing that she realised Jung is not really nice as he is seems in front of peoples, because she observing him from the beginning, and that because she feel Jung quite cold to her and she don't like it.

OMG YES!!

I was totally re-living all my awkward first dates as Seol went through hers!!!! Especially the part where she came home to her mess of a bedroom (yes, multiple outfit everywhere!) and then starving because she barely ate anything (omg, I've picked up full meals after a date!)....

Thank you so much for your kickass recaps as always! My heart already hurts for In-ho because of how natural and comfortable he and Seol are together. I'm alternately charmed and wary by Jung, and I just couldn't help but cringe throughout the entire date — love the comment on how just getting into a relationship isn't the endgame, but that there's so much work involved in a relationship.

Never have I related more to a character than Seol — girl, you and I both are anxiety-ridden creatures cursed by awkwardness. I feel so much for her, it's frightening how emotionally invested I am in this drama.

Seriously, my mom thinks I'm insane because she's walked in on me making the most twisted scrunched up facial expressions at my screen because I'm trying so hard hold back my tears or shouts or laughs or whatever — oh what have you done to me, show?

I just can't resist falling into your trap. (I apologize for nothing.)

Jung is really scary, but why I so love him!!!! Maybe because he's Park Hae-jin after all! And who said he is too old for a college student?!? He's so hot! ah that eyes!

Kim Go-eun is fresh in the eye! I read in an article before that Seol was offered to Suzy before, but watching Kim Go-eun doing Seol, I think she perfectly fit in the character.

Starting episode 1 to 4, everything is interesting. R88 is ending so thanks TvN for bringing Cheese just on time! And thanks JAVABEANS for the recap! Love it!

This is my first comment on dramabeans ever but I always love reading your summaries!

I have been an avid fan of the webtoon CITT for the last three years so I was super excited to see this. I promise not to say much about the webtoon but I will say that they did a fantastic job keeping to the original for the characters, atmosphere, storyline etc.

I was skeptical about the casting when I first heard about it but from episode one, every character won me over. Even crazy Baek In Ha. And I'm surprised at the pace they're going compared to the webtoon. They're moving fast, which I love. I hate it when dramas drag things out.

Anyway, thanks for recapping. I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts on each episode. I have a unique perspective since I mostly know what's about to happen plotwise because of the webtoon. But it's fun seeing what others who haven't read it think.

now you have to pay to read the actual webtoon besides the 16(?) chapters of season one and the ongoing season 4 (which is only in korean).. and if i recall correctly, before it was taken down (i'm talking about season 3 mainly) the webtoon was scantalated by oddsquad up to season 3 chapter 50

Hi, different michelle :P

To maple, I was going to say pretty much everything that different michelle and nozomi have said. I would check with Oddsquad scanlations. I just went to their website and it seems like they're are finding ways to make season 3 viewable.

Since I started reading it three years ago, I have read it when it was done mainly as a scanlation on a manga website, then through Oddsquad, then going directly to the naver website and reading summaries in English through a CITT forum.

Good luck! I hope you find a way~

season 4 is completely available (up to Ep 20, as of today) on naver's comic site (in Korean). It's uploaded separately from the other 3 seasons and I can read it without paying anything. Well, I actually caught up with the webtoon in November-December while season 3 was still available. I was completely surprised yesterday when I was trying to find season 3 on naver..and couldn't find it anymore. *sad face*. Wanted to go over it once more. I guess not..

So it was previously pay-per-view, but I believe the author (or Naver) and Odd Squad Scanlations reached an agreement. If you go on Odd Squad's main website, you'll find instructions there and access to all the translated chapters (there are currently 182 translated). It's something called overtooning--the translations will appear on Naver's official website so that English fans can read it while the author also makes money from these views. :)

Hi - is there any way I could get spoilers for the webtoon? I read a couple of chapters online but didn't really have the patience. I was always the type to read the ending before the beginning, (flicked back, checked Sirius died in Order of the Phoenix, and then continued to Chapter 2 on first go oops). I've searched online, but only found general reviews that don't give anything a way.

Obviously not on this site, but perhaps there's another way?

the webtoon itself posted on naver is not finished yet. it's now up to session 4, but the English version is by now still on session 3, so I guess there's no one other than the authors knows how the story will end. if you feel like to read the English webtoon just go through oddsquad's site and then search for citt. you just have to drag 'star mark of overtoon' on the left side of the page to your bookmark. afterward, klick on the chapter you are going to read and there you'll be directed to naver. you might find you're not on your destined chapter but on the prologue. but don't worry, you just need to klick on your previously overtoon bookmark, wait the page to load, and voala, there you are. it needs patience tho. I sometimes have to klick the overtoon up to 2 or 3 times for it to work. but it works. so good luck

There's a strange level of emotional manipulation going on here. I really do like Yoo Jung but am puzzled as to why he feels the need to slightly pressure Seol into a ‘yes’. She's not immune to him. There's little chance that she wouldn't have said yes if he'd taken a more indirect method, like showing up to work to take her out for lunch and perhaps asking her again in a few weeks. It's established at this point that Yoo Jung's wary and well aware of people being around him simply because they want something. Does he want Seol to be around him because she wants him? Until we delve into more of Yoo Jung it's difficult to explain why he's making such strange decisions with his love-life.

Heaven knows, the guy’s got a crush. He lights up when he's around her or reading her messages, but the poker death mask is back on the moment anything related to the Baek duo comes up. Or video games. I still can't decide whether him throwing the phone back was meant to be amusing (Yoo Jung's a hardcore gamer) or sinister (Yoo Jung sees Seol as a mouse in his trap). I know this duality is what Yoo Jung's character is about and what keeps people glued to their seats but it does make for a confusing romance because it's difficult to understand why you should ship him with Seol when there's Baek Inho.

Plus, for all Yoo Jung’s attentiveness, he doesn't notice that Seol's not having a good time. It's almost as though he's enjoying the date so much that his hawk-eyes just aren't functioning. Which is cuuute!

Reasons why Baek Inho and Seol work so well: He reminds me of Shin Segi and Shin Segi is perfection. He is 100% what you see on the surface. He doesn't have masks, and says exactly what he thinks. His tastes match Seol's. They're both simple, in the food they eat and the stuff they find amusing. He's good for Seol and less stressful for her to be around. Seo Kangjoon is hot

But the show keeps coming back to the fact that Yoo Jung and Seol are fundamentally quite similar. The two have a core of inner steel but Seol's bogged down with expectations and family situations whereas Yoo Jung is in a position to show some of that steel. It's moment like when Seol (wonderfully) turns the tables on Jooyeon and refuses to accept her shifting blame that show how compatible these two could be if Yoo Jung showed this caring manipulation-free side, and Seol held onto her steely side. It demonstrates that their journey doesn't just involve finding these sides of each other, but in Seol's case, in particular, finding it within themselves. And I am so on board with watching that.

this! This was my discomfort with him because he felt slightly manipulative in the instances you mentioned, but I must be weird because I still like him with Seol.

0

Required fields are marked *

The thing is, Seol is a skittish creature who frequently doesn't speak her mind unless you get her at exactly the right time (or are In Ho, apparently). I mean, Jung spent what looks like weeks trying to get her to go to dinner with him, and never with a flat "I don't want to go" out of her. So I can understand why he would lightly press for an answer when she at least looks like she's capable of speech.

Jung is a puzzle. I can't really fault a lot of what he does or says, not just with Seol but with everyone - he just expresses himself in a way that makes you want to crawl behind a pillar and hide. But there doesn't seem to be malice in it? Strong intent, yes, but what have we seen so far in direct confrontations:

- Trying to motivate In Ha, who is legitimately crippling her life
- Threatening Sexual Assault Sunbae
- Leaving Evil Wench to think her homeless man scheme really was about to explode

His motivation and end goal are generally good, his method is just one that totally freaks people out.

I felt horribly sorry for Jung in this episode. He doesn't know Seol isn't having a good time. His triangle kimbap insight didn't last, and he's not understanding the social gulf between him and Seol. It's like he's missing a layer. Jung seems to see the patterns in everything, and knows which strings to pull to make certain things happen, and in a very analytical way knows how to achieve goals. But emotional context is a huge reach for him.

I love how you analyzed Jung. He knows what to say to get things done. He backed away from Soel when she said she wasn't thinking of having a boyfriend. He only pressed his point when she took his hand, in such a cute and awkward way (I love her there).

But once that was done, he has no idea how to effectively woo her.

Yes, I agree with a lot of what you're saying. I think he and Seol have to do a lot of talking honestly, to really get to know each other. I think they both tend to do the same thing - make their own judgements and keep their cards close to their chest.

Maybe because I just found a not so 'purely innocent' hero in this drama named Yoo Jung, I would like to comment to anyone who had same thought as me for his personality. I wouldn't like Jung any other way than he is now, and yes, he needs to learn more about Seol, but, I do not want him to change his nature for anyone. Some people, like that nasty Sunbae or that nasty biatch, need to deal with our kind of hero. Someone who would not smile when some people throw nasty things at them.

I don't know why, but I seem to have read the video game scene quite differently from the majority (who read it as disinterest on Jung's part, or a general lack of attentiveness toward his new gf)... at least the first time through. I only began to see it the other way after reading this recap and the reactions in the comments.

I simply placed it as an extension of his weird, obsessive hobbies (i.e. the intricate paper design cutting thing and overly complex coloring books). They seem to be Jung's form of stress relief.
And for whatever reason, I read his obsessiveness with the video game as him being somewhat stressed out about his new relationship, not knowing how to approach it, and therefore avoiding the situation for the moment.

In any case, that video game scene is not, I believe, in the actual manhwa, and it does, in my opinion, seem rather out of character for Jung. So either it's not a scene that is supposed to be given much weight, or these scenes are given to demonstrate that Jung is not exactly the most healthy form of himself yet (which would explain his slightly obsessive stress-relieving activities).

It is kind of weird with most of the characters doing subtle acting and In Ha is flat out crazy, but believe me, she was supposed to be like that. In the webtoon she is explosive and crazy and over the top.

Required fields are marked *

Having read the webtoon, I can tell you that In Ha is cray cray... in a vicious way and comes off as unstable in the beginning. But they've made her slightly funnier and less scary (at least for now) in the drama. The actress who plays her is doing a pretty good job for a character that I imagine is pretty hard to portray in real life. I wouldn't say it's the actress' fault if you find her unlikeable but rather In Ha's character.

Totally agree! I thought I'm the only one who thinks so. Yeah.. she's so exaggerating. She did funny with her lips at first, but then she did it really often that make it not funny anymore. Her face and appearance quite represent the webtoon though. It's only her exaggerating act! Ugh..

Required fields are marked *

I agree.

I don't like the actress portraying In Ha.

Some people say its the character that I don't like.
But that is completely untrue, in many dramas there is always a terrible character but the CHARACTER is what I focus my hate on. I hardly look at a Villain and think ah I hate that acting. I am thinking please die or end up in jail for all the evil drama crimes you have done.
Because watching a drama your suppose to feel hate, like etc for a character.

But when I see In Ha all I see is the actress and its distracting.
When I watch Seol I only see Seol and not the actress and I am immersed in the story.

Or when I watch another drama with a heinous character I am immersed in my hate for the character.

But In Ha all I see is an actress and her fake acting.
Too much gestures. Too much facial expression.
I do not see her character just her acting.

This show makes me so freaking happy. In part due to the amazingness that is the hotter than fireworks-explosive chemistry that is Hong Seol and Baek In Ho.
Serious question, has Seo Kang Joon always been this good? Like I've seen him in Sly and Single Lady, I don't know if he's been in anything else since but, but DANG Baek In Ho has the potential to become one of my favorite characters of all time, webtoon and drama version.
Today's episode made me realize how different Seol is when she's with Jung and In Ho. With Jung, she's constantly holding back even though there are like a million questions running around in her head. In contrast, she can just say what she's really feeling to In Ho. There's this weird uneasy tension whenever Jung and Seol are together and some of that is most likely intentional on the actors' parts but I can't help notice on the flipside how care-free she is when she's with In Ho. Like I've never seen her so happy...since ever.
It makes me curious to see how that uneasiness between Jung and Seol develops or goes away in the future and even though I am falling in love with In Ho, I have trust in the actors/actresses to portray growth in all their relationships.
I also really appreciate the pace of the show so far, since I did give in and read the webtoon :/ (which was kinda worth it bc it's soo good) the writers have pulled it off without sacrificing character development so now I'm just gonna tune in every week and enjoy the show

Yes, another one for team In Ho! And yes, Seo Kang Joon is good. I saw him in What Happens to My Family and he was pretty charismatic in that too. In that and Cunning Single Lady, he played the rich chaebol type. So it's really nice to see him playing a character like Baek In Ho, the antithesis to rich chaebols, and doing it quite convincingly. His chemistry with Seol is perfect.

At this point, I am just sticking to the theory that they are switching up the original script and In Ho is actually the main lead. EVERY typical kdrama sign points to In Ho and every sign of doom points to Jung. I won't lie though, my heart shattered a little when she said she wanted to go home. And why do I think the possible psychopath is cute? This is so worrying, it is like I remember you all over again. I am actually making excuses for him in my head. Stop it Kdramagods! Stop making me question my beliefs and morality.. Does the fact that Min (IRY) is just the CUTEST thing I ever saw mean i .. have psychopathic tendencies? *tears of confusion *resumes defense case for Jung

This pairing is fascinating because as you've pointed out, it's not the typical kdrama fare. The cold, (supposed) unfeeling chaebols are linked with bright candy types who can make them smile. I'm most excited that it may explore the question of - can someone be more 'right' and 'good' for you even though more effort needs to be put into that relationship vs another more comfortable one?

But here, both our protagonists have the entire world centered around themselves. Seol is super adorable, but she's so busy with her own life she hasn't looked sideways. She's realistic, in that defeated victimised sort of way. Other characters seem to be hinting that's selfishness, rather than responsiblity - something that I was getting really mad at, because I could feel her pain, but also frustratingly sort of correct. And of course, Yoojung has never cared to look elsewhere, 100% assured of his values and position in life.

Their moments are adorable, but the relationship itself is so questionable. (I would fall for that smile too, though, Seol).

The previews show that Seol's got a good head, so I'm not too worried about that. It will be interesting to see what our three main characters learn from each other, and how Seol is able to start 'giving' to Yoojung in return.

Thanks for the recap!

yeah kdramas normally take a rather romanticized view of how love works. and that's even leaving aside all the cray ott window dressing that comes with the rom coms and melos normally.

there ARE relationships that click right away and stay great. and plenty start out how seol/jung did and fizzle out right quick. but i think the drama is making a good case for why even tho its so awk and depressing to watch now, they may truly be a good match in the long run. but both have alot of learning to do.

I think Jung is scary in that he can compartmentalize so completely to the point it seems like he's turning on a dime from one moment to the next. but tbh...i do kinda get him. he still annoys me but he's clearly emotionally crippled and has dealt with it in the least healthy way possible. he doesnt go out of his way to be malicious true, but he is incredibly self centered. which obv came from a life born of privilege. not to mention he is very smart, and a man. put all that together. he's sittin pretty in all the most obv ways. but his soul is a desert~ and he needs some water stat.

Seol internalizes so much too. but while she acts out of self preservation too. perhaps without realizing it half the time. she obv works SO hard and tries her best and rly doesnt get the appreciation she deserves. even tho half the time i'm liek SPEAK UP GIRL. FOR THE LOVE OF...! but i also know that she's obv crushed by the weight of her life to have much time to deal with people's shenanigans or much energy to scream at everyone who is ever an asshole to her. plus when ur poor/working class, u dont have the luxury of alienating ppl even if they are trash. esp ppl u work for or with. this is true in school too. its sad. sometimes u can be in the right and speak the truth for yourself or others and still get fucked over. i think both her and jung know that and have dealt with it accordingly. it doesnt help taht we never get inside his head (and never will) and have to sit there and psychoanalize him all the time.
like yeah, who has the time??? no wonder she just felt tired and wanted to go home. he's so clueless, obv he has no idea what her life is. that's why she has to speak up or he'll never know. and she will hella resent him for it!

So Jung did call security, which makes me feel more comfortable with him being the male lead. Now that that's out of the way, I think he isn't as scary as he originally seemed. It does seem as though he's built some sort of emotional wall around him though. He's almost the antithesis of In Ho, who is straightforward and says how he's feeling up front.

Also, I know In Ha's character is supposed to be crazy, but I feel as though the actress is playing a caricature of In Ha or something. Each of her motions are emphasized, but at the same time seem forced.

This show just keeps getting better and better. I absolutely loved Seol's interactions with In-ho. They both have things to learn from each other and I like that they try each other's advice. The bad thing is that I am seriously getting second lead syndrome why?!?! He is just so adorable. I found myself laughing out loud when I saw the posters with his pictures. When he took the pictures I was thinking "I hope he knows what those pictures are going to be used for and not just agreed for the money". I was expecting his pictures to end in a very embarrassing ad or something similar. :) I rarely squeee when I watch a show but I found myself Squeeing through their scenes. One thing that bugged me about Jung was the way he threw the phone after he texted Seol. Maybe I am reading too much into it but if you really cared about the person you were dating wouldn't you want your phone say next to you in case they answered to answer back in case you didn't hear it? Why did he throw it so dismissively? Anyway Thanks for the recap JB :)

In Ho and Seol all the way!

I love how he calls her "Gae~tull!" Hahaha! Too funny, especially with this little hand gesture at the end. I love it. I have a feeling more fans are going to be shipping Seo Kang Joon than Park Hae Jin after this drama!

Can't wait for episode 5!! Monday! Where are you?? Thank goodness it's a day off!! I can start watching episode 5 at Noon right after it airs!!!

I think the intricate detail oriented hobbies is the shows emulation of Jung's need for control. I know you won't like drama/webtoon comparison but Jung makes this association with toy cars in the webtoon saying boys like toy cars because it does what he wants. There is a different vibe in this show, and I'm not one to nitpick between differences between two different mediums, but the show is obscuring a lot of the good things Jung did for Seol before they dated. Somehow it felt to me like he is forcing her to date, while in the webtoon she was clearly fond of him already at that point. But anywho, I really like your interpretation of Jung expecting trust to be earned but is somehow unaware that it's applicable to him. Because he has always been the one being wanted (being the rich, popular kid), he doesn't understand the concept of wanting someone to like him (because they always do). In the webtoon, there is so much more parallel of similarities between Seol and Jung that isn't here in the show, so I wonder if they're just going to eliminate that part... oh well, I guess I can't discuss that part since it may or may not be a spoiler, so hmmmm. Thank you for the recap and your thoughts! You gave me a lot to think about, and what I really like about Cheese is the ideas it churns in my head. To next week then!

well like they have to condense a story that has been running for years into a 16 hour drama. lots of stuff is bound to be cut for time or streamlined. it made sense to me, but i never read the webtoon. have no interest in doing so. short and sweet is how i prefer my stories.

Should I be concerned at how my fellow drama watchers are swooning over a guy who is borderline psychopath?
Yes he's good looking and all, but take that away Jung just leaves me with a serious case of The Creeps.
He seemed to be a lot more nicer now than he was in Ep 1, but even with what appears to be a 'genuine' crush and emotional growth, I'm still unable to shake off the feeling that everything he says or do, every little nice gesture, is a calculated move on his part.

Maybe I'm just overly suspicious and paranoid (a tiny bit like Seol).
Or I have a serious case of Second Lead Syndrome. Or both.

He strikes me as more socially inept than psychopathic. If any of his behavior was malicious or sinister I'd be more concerned, but most of his interventions have good end goals. He's just missing the emotional layer that would see/care that his actions could be interpreted as seriously alarming.

I think he knows he's being threatening, he just doesn't understand why it's different from yelling "I'm done with you, never come near me again" - and frankly why should he? Isn't it weird that we're more likely to accept someone blowing up than completely cooling down?

I concur to that being a true thing because I'm the epitome of that. If I'm loud, it's fine. If I'm quiet, you better be ready to beg or run. But in my experience, when the relationship is close/ important, that makes it hurt even more.

I'll add that such people tend to choose the most heart-stabby words and can/may deliver in the most heart-stabby way since that's all they'll ever say when engulfed by wrath. Whether they will is determined by how angry they are and how important the other person is to him/her.

0

Required fields are marked *

I'd say it's because people don't like or feel threatened by people they can't predict at all.

But honestly, people are so illogical with their emotions that emotional intelligence is a clear break from cognitive intelligence and what the majority/ general public thinks are normal reactions are actually completely baffling and illogical if you really think about it. (Any/Most) Social construct is so weird if you actually think deeply about it.

People like people who are open and wear their hearts on their sleeves because they're easy to read and defend against. But that's so illogical because why show your hand like that? And when people see someone quiet, they get antsy because they don't know what the person is thinking about and therefore not know how to deal with him/her.

And I'm not sure if it's right/okay to read hypocrisy in how people are afraid of Jung just because he shows his darker side and seems to be manipulating people because who has NEVER manipulated anyone before? Who hasn't tried to influence, take advantage of timing or an emotional state or even blackmailed (to any effect and scale) another person for his/her own benefit? And really, Jung is NOT a master manipulator because if he were, he wouldn't have shown anything and you wouldn't even have known at all.

0

Required fields are marked *

Oh, Jung is a master manipulator all right, it's just that they made drama!Jung a lot more obvious than webtoon!Jung, probably so the audience would realize it faster.

Huh, I find it makes sense to be more afraid of someone who's manipulative than someone who's open. Especially when it's someone you don't know that well -- it's not hypocrisy, it's simply recognizing who's the bigger potential threat.

0

Required fields are marked *

Huh. I've never read the comic and I'm not planning to any time soon so I wouldn't know. I'm basing everything on drama-Yoo Jung. I'll read the manhwa after the drama ends.

So far, drama- YooJung hasn't manipulated by setting off a butterfly effect of more than 1 indirect level which doesn't make him much of a master at manipulation in my book.

I don't mean that it doesn't make sense but more like one shunning a person who may well simply be misunderstood because he doesn't act like one expected him to be when one is the same is hypocrisy. How do I put this? It's like thinking "he's unpredictable, thus he's bad" when everyone (including the one thinking that) is multi-dimensional and manipulative (even if on just a micro-scale). The difference is the extent and whether he/she (the "manipulator") gets caught. If everyone is doing the same thing but different people are judged differently just because one is more conscious and his thought process is clearer to us... isn't that hypocrisy?

0

I am actually more wary of people who are opened with their feelings because I feel like it is more like a mask. Lol, I am part Jung, part Seol, in terms of my interaction with people

0

no u shouldnt be, cuz he's not a psychopath. at all. not to say he's primo bf material (haha no) but psycho he is not. or a sociopath. a sociopath is someone in capable of feeling regret over their actions ever, or empathizing with another person. not to mention he would only ever do things to serve himself. tbh they are toeing the line there. u can argue he's a sociopath but also argue taht he's not. but psychopath is a diff thing entirely. (im not even sure its a legit thing that people can be diagnosed as ne more...)

but yeah he is disturbingly calculating and manipulative at times. alas u dont have to be a sociopath to be either of those things.

Required fields are marked *

Your explanation of a sociopath is actually what psychopaths are. Compared to sociopaths, a psychopath has a greater ability to dissociate from their actions and experience less or no guilt.

They are also usually perceived by the general public as charming individuals who can hold normal (or even good) jobs and have loving relationships, but are actually calculative and manipulative, not that their peers/victims are aware of it.

That said not all psychopaths are evil/malicious/sinister criminals or serial killers as portrayed in general media. Most have the ability to lead average lives with no intent to kill or maim or any other evil doings. Their goals can be as 'innocent' as to succeed at a project or fast track a job promotion.

Sociopaths on the other hand are impulsive and erratic (in general) and prone to outbursts.

All that said, some of Jung's actions so far have bothered me. I am not outright putting a pyschopath stamp on him just yet (I'm waiting for more shit to hit the fan), but there's definitely been quite a lot of hints of his calculative and manipulative ways.

Like when Seol ends up apologizing to him for mistakenly hinting he was the person behind the misuse of club funds leak. He came out of it looking like the wronged person when in actual fact he a hand in it. Giving the receipt to (he had no reason to, really) JaeWoo, him finding out (and he knew there can be only one outcome as theres no love lost between JaeWoo and Sangchul) and leaking the 'truth' behind those receipts.

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

So what if he had a hand in it? Seol WAS wrong in incorrectly accusing him for it. Just because he gave the receipt to JaeWoo (and even with the hope or knowledge that JaeWoo will most probably turn SangChul in) doesn't mean that Yoo Jung had to be unfairly labelled as the whistle-blower and 'suffer' her subsequent mistrust when he was not one.

Honestly, he couldn't have known with 100% certainty that Seol was not the one who sent in the info. Sure, JaeWoo was the higher possibility but you can't possibly link handing a receipt over to a little guy and then walking away without delivering any intention for 'how it can be used' to definite incrimination. After all, Seol WAS at the staircase too.

I'd say that Jung is a person who can read and accept things shallowly (like when Seol apologized for the mis-accusations and he took it as that, nothing more) while also being able to understand things at a very deep level. He is able to compartmentalize to well that if he decides that something stops there then it stops just right there. There is no more speculation of hidden intention and further reaction of any sort. If he decides that the cases/events/instances shall be linked and there's something more, then they shall be thought more.

If we were to put Jung up against my most recent favorite drama psychopaths...

I'd say he's 90% Hyun, 7% Joon Young, 3% Min. Which I would basically break down as 90% logic-based, 7% manipulation-based, and 3% justice-based.

Which is good news for Jung fans, I'd say. As far as I can tell he cares deeply about outcomes, with emotional state running a distant second place. But he doesn't manipulate people for the purpose of seeing them dance, and while he puts the pieces in place for justice to be served he doesn't actually mete it out himself. He waits.

I think his main problem is that, much like Hyun, he overlooks the human element. He can predict behavior, and he can both identify and capitalize on others' emotional states, but he really doesn't pay that much attention to the ripples his actions cause and the discomfort other people have with him afterwards. Which from a certain point of view makes sense - why bother with someone's low-level disgruntlement until it actually becomes a problem? Jung just isn't bothered by other people being unsettled by him.

It is also worth noting that "psychopath" does not mean "evil", and that was one of my favorite themes in "I Remember You": psychopaths are people who don't have empathy, but that doesn't mean they can't learn the value of empathy and sort of fake it in a productive manner. The psychopath label is one we usually use for those whose lack of a moral compass led to them setting up an unusual values structure that doesn't fit with society (or fits extremely well, given the percentage of CEO psychopaths). It's very likely you know a psychopath yourself, it doesn't mean they're going to hit you with a hatchet anytime soon.

love love love. and yeah, has Seo Kang Joon always been this good? He's really rocking the character of Baek In Ho + there's this spark between him and Park Hae Jin. Whenever those two are in a scene together I get chills because of the tension.

also - the colouring scene, the playing with a caterpillar scene, the cutting a butterfly on paper scene, the patting Seol's head scene - while some might find it random, I thought they were such nice touches because they really indicate Jung's personality as being excessively detail-oriented and controlling. (and also help to add another layer to the usual kdrama calling/texting/staring at someone scenes). Was so creeped out at Jung's head patting thing and especially hand-cupping of Jooyeon's face -- the latter was very Not Okay.

it's so layered, i really like it. Seol and Jung are currently having a relationship that is almost just built on facades. I wasn't expecting CITT to translate well into a drama but it did, and I'm so grateful because it's really how I wish a lot of dramas would be --> more direct confessions! more people realizing their mistakes and at least somewhat trying to apologize! more interesting secondary characters! more relatable content like being at university! more introspective heroines!

And this is what I would say...when the first date sucks, you would know something is going right. Not asking for red roses or the moon, but definitely the simple things to make the girl comfortable. Jung would know by now Seol likes the simple stuff like triangle kimbap and she works herself crazy to get fed and dressed.
But neverthless, he was the first one to tell her to talk about her feelings rather than keeping them in. This was even before In Ho was her neighbour and they were on friendly terms. But when I see she is more comfortable with In Ho, well I gotta keep tissues ready when the second lead is gonna get rejected. Soooo difficult, to stay for the next week.

Gosh Cheese in the Trap will surely be the death of me. School starts next week and I would still be digging this. HAHAHA. I love this episode too much I might watch it again and again and again.
If I were to compare it to the webtoon, I was on the Jung x Seol ship all aloooong, (I still love In Ho though in the webtoon), but dang, watching this drama, I have come to love Seol x In Ho. Their interactions are so sweet (my smile is still evident while I'm typing this), so cute, natural, and gives that heartwarming feeling. (It doesn't help that In Ho has such cute puppy eyes gaah).

I can't help but to feel bad with Seol on her date with Yoo Jung, because mannnn that was so awkward, maybe because they are too different, she can't speak the words running on her mind, and she is uncomfortable with Jung (because she likes him, right?). Well, all first dates are awkward though, says kdramas HAHAHA. I think that the reason that Jung likes Seol is because he can see his self in her (so weird idk), and I hope to see more Jung x Seol moments to beat my Seol x In Ho ship, but judging with the preview, it won't fade that quickly. Still, I enjoy her moments with them so much. Gosh, waiting for another Monday is torture. (Mondays is the most hated day because it's the first day of classes but in kdrama land, you'll be praying for Mondays to come HAHA)

Thanks for the recap! <3

Kookiestar님~I totally agree about the Jung and Seol ship in the webtoon. I feel like her relationship with Inho in the drama illustrates more chemistry between the two characters in the same way that the rigidity of Seol's relationship with Jung is emphasized. This seems more realistic, which I'm totally liking.

Thanks JB, for the quick recap!

I have to disagree about being uncomfortable on dates especially in the beginning of a relationship is an ISSUE. I also disagree on judging too quickly on whether a couple is MEANT to be together or not based on their feelings and reactions during the initial dates.

I'm always uncomfortable during dating at the beginning of a relationship. While very giddy and happy, I tend to also get really awkward, can't look straight at the guy a lot, and wish that I was somewhere else sometimes. But this doesn't mean that I don't like him at all or that I have problem communicating. It is just the beginning, we all need to get to know each other better and THEN can we get more comfortable. Well, at least from an Asian's perspective.

Love the drama, love Yoo Jung and Hong Seol's dynamics. Many said they have 2nd lead syndromes but I've never been like that. The ONLY time I continue to watch a kdrama rooting for the 2nd lead was YFAS with the same Park Hae Jin. I watch that drama because of him. In Ho maybe messed up in some ways but the drama depicts him to be a good guy basically. THAT doesn't make him a better boyfriend for Seol. Love and chemistry is a mysterious thing. These are never logic nor can they be explained 100%. These are just magical and cosmic, not science (good guy vs complicated guy = good guy wins.... nah!). Hence, I root for the OTP here.

Can't wait for episode 5 next week!

But it's good- Jung is making my heart flutter. Not because of the actor it's because of the acting from both leads. I just love Seol she is so befuddled by him it's endearing.

Also, I was more than skeptical about SKJ's casting but it seems he's won me over for now. He's suprised me here and his resemblance to the character is uncanny.

(slightly unrelated) I read that Soonkki-nim specifically requested that the drama ending be different from the ending of the webtoon so I'm curious to see what they've come up with. The webtoon is also nearing its end. I'm eager to compare the two and the statements they make. ^^

After one episode and I'm already considering switching ships. It was painful watching Seol so uncomfortable on their date. As soon as Jung asked her out, I was picturing this dream date with this dream guy, but the ensuing awkwardness was such a letdown. Unfortunately, they don't have much in common. I feel giddy every time Jung drops by her office, though.

Meanwhile, I love Seol with In Ho since she can be herself around him. She is too self-conscious around Sunbae. "She smiled" was past tense, but she smiles a lot around In Ho. Their play fight in the rain was precious. I was hoping Seol would have a run-in with the robber (i.e., landlord's grandson) and In Ho would come to her rescue, living in the same neighborhood and all.

Seol instinctively grabs his hand back before realizing what she’s done, which endears her to me forever.

I luff this scene. Seol is like my spirit animal.

oh man i am loving all the quiet emotional beats in this drama. and NO CHAEBOL SCHEMING NONSENSE. im amazed at how Jung's dad is not only pretty chill but kinda generous? he's a rich businessman so he's prob not all rainbows but its refreshing tbh.
---
for me personally, In Ho is way more my type (both looks and personality wise ayyoo). But tbh for Seol I think longterm Jung might be the better choice. THO Jung/Seol is giving me HELLA deja vu/flash backs to my first romance/love. The girl was p much like jung minus the creeper undertones and wealth/privilege. but the hot/cold and the intense repression and the painfully bland "nice" comments that i learned to see thru fairly early on.
It was rough man. even tho it went on for 2 years. I was so young (19-21) and my personality alot like Inho (i was a complete bombastic nutcase hahaha. which! is why i would know precisely how 2 deal with him),
So yeah I DO think seol/jung could work out but lord knows my patience for someone like Jung as a bf would be next to none haha. even tho i'm much more mellow and mature now tho (cuz that was like 8 years ago...im old...)
-
I like what javabeans said, that seol and jung could learn from each other and become more centered and happier if they adopted some of each other's traits. and i think in the long term similarities are way more helpful than differences. it's not like they are carbon copies. but for seol/inho. i feel like as adorable as they are now (SO ADORABLE) i worry that it would blow up p badly. for the same reasons its working p well now, ironically enough XD.
-
i am EXCITE to see a show actually explore the complications that arise in ANY new relationship esp since Seol has zero experience (tbh idt jung has much either haha) cuz ya an awk first date is but one of many hurdles that CAN be overcome if they would just open up!
At least it looks like next week, Seol will actually confront Jung and thank god too. It's just so against my nature and seol feels So Real so i am like shrieking at the screen the whole time SPEAK UR TRUTH GIRL!!! Oh Honey NO! lol.

i think he likes her alot but he clearly rushed the asking out cuz of In Ho. like he obv has no clue how a relationship works and isnt trying v hard to make sure Seol is comfy. its not ALL his fault but he is still at fault. if not for inho he would have waited longer i suspect.

Also is anyone else getting the vibe that Jung is the reason Teacher Heo hired Seol? it was obv not done amicably either which is why he's taking it out on Seol. and when YJ was coming into the office to see seol, i felt like he was also obv coming to check on how Heo is treating her and when he said "we'll be seeing alot of each other now" it seemed like a threat to Heo as much as a gleeful statement to Seol. I was like *shivers* when he walked in. the dude has the abilty to suck the air out of the room/scene whenever he shows up. it def explains both the allure he has and also what makes him so scary at the same time.

I think the reason why Jung asked Seol to be his girlfriend is because, while he is clearly enamored with her, her initial distance and aversion to him made him fascinated with her. He clearly sees what she is going through, the hardship she endures everyday. He wants to protect her and to smooth the path for her. And he can do that better if he is her boyfriend than if he was just a friend with no claims on her.

I am not discounting that he upped the timing when he saw her with In Ho (whom he views as a real threat to their relationship). He's helped her when he can by giving her the scholarship to allow her stay in school, helped her get the job in the office, and now is helping her get free tuition at an expensive private tutoring school. I feel he would like to do more for her, spend time with her when he wants and also protect her by giving her 'status' by which I mean that slime like that serial date rapist would give her a very wide berth if they knew that Seol was Yoo Jung's girlfriend.

Oh man...so in all my drama watching years - and trust me, there's been A LOT - I've RARELY ever had second lead syndrome (I am pretty faithful to the OTP)....but this episode right here....I was feeling Team In Ho during the whole thing....

OH MAN. Now what am I supposed to do!? *wails loudly*

Okay, so for now, I'm putting myself on Team Seol.

Seol has a lot of work to do on just coming into her own. She's in that peculiar age where you're "supposed" to be figuring out your live and yet she's still trying to just get through a single day. I love what In Ho brought out in her - she can stand up for herself when she's given that little bit of encouragement. I like that she's changing.

Jung's case makes me think he's got a bit of untreated OCD going on. The fact that he's using coloring books and stencil etching in the past two episodes - he's found way's to "relieve" his OCD stress - however we still find him trying to control and manipulate his surroundings in subtle ways. Jung is definitely such an intricate character...however, still needs a lot of work before I'm fully onboard with Team Jung.

And OMG, that first date sequence. I can't express how many times I've been on those super awkward first dates!! I've also internal agonized and wished to go home during a bunch of them. Seol - I'm with you girl! - so screw both men and just be the amazing single woman you can be!!

narratively, i love jung's character because he's such a paradox - sweet and boyish with seol one minute, and yet so hard and deliberate with anyone who crosses the next - but on the other hand, the fact that i'm rooting for the potential sociopath makes me wonder what that says about me as a person LOL. i really do appreciate how he's written with such mystery and complexity though, and i hope that they deliver on the backstory - i don't want them to chicken out and end up painting him as the usual misunderstood, cold-but-with-a-heart-of-gold kdrama hero. if he's being portrayed with a hard edge, i want to see that hard edge. definitely also looking forward to more kisses and skinship (heh) as well as the emotional growth of both him and seol. speaking of which, i love seol. she's awkward and anxious and paranoid, but steely and determined when she wants to be, and that just makes her so relatable and refreshingly normal.

Him throwing the phone the way he did after texting her back , after having asked her to date him, was the most uncomfortable thing I had to see. I know in the webtoon he does things that makes me uncomfortable, but that key moment in the drama is going to stay with me big time. That was when I started to ponder whether he is even interested

I felt the same way about that scene. There has to be a reason why the writer put that small scene in. Is it to keep the audience guessing as to Jung's intentions (as we shouldn't be so quick to believe that he is truly interested in Seol)? Or is it just another glimmer into Jung's near psychopathic tendencies? Nevertheless, it makes me wary about his feelings and actions.

Wary is the right word. I felt that way after that scene, in fact, it stayed with me for the rest of the episode. I don't expect Jung to be gushy, but he could have at least feigned interest after she texted him

Yes , that scene is also the one that made doubt about King's real feelings towards Seol. I know that the story is trying to keep his personality and feelings a mystery, but I got sooo confused by it.

The second lead male is adorable but I don't usually fall for second leads. At this point, I can only say that there's strong chemistry between Jung and Seol, In Ho and Seol. So, it gets quite confusing. I've never read the webtoon but basing on all the 4 episodes that I have watched, Jung presents a good and dark side. In Ho is cute and adorable but a bit immature and can be annoying at times. I see him more like a really good and fun friend for Seol. In ha is super annoying and I think it's just right to teach her a lesson and make her earn her own money. I'm still skeptical about Jung's whole personality. I hope that they will show how he actually developed that personality. I think that Jung's actions are meant to correct what's wrong but he does it in a creepy or dark way. So I think that Jung's character will be misunderstood a lot. And that's why everyone will ship Seol with In Ho. I still have faith in this story that Seol will end up with whoever she wants to be with. If it is with Jung, I hope they won't make him act creepy anymore by the last episode coz he is a hottie and the chemistry is there. If it is with In Ho, I hope his character matures and just be this adorable and responsible boyfriend who will pay for her meals. I know it will get complicated and I will have heartaches because I am honestly team Jung-Seol as of this moment. I have a feeling they won't end up together in the end and that's why I am preparing myself for doomsday?...I hate it when I get this attached to the characters?
