The Bean Count [Year in Review, Part 1]
by girlfriday
Welcome to The Bean Count, a new feature we’re trying out this year, which arose, if we’re being totally honest, out of a half-loopy brainstorming session of thinking up new, improved (?) ways to weigh in on the past year’s drama offerings. The Beanie Polls are all about you guys, and the Editors’ Picks are our chance to highlight the shows we felt merited special recognition. And of course we have our individual reviews coming up a little later this month.
But sometimes the critically acclaimed shows aren’t the ones that stick with you, and we wondered how our staff would vote if the question wasn’t “Which drama was the best?” but more along the lines of “Let’s say we gave you beans. And you could award a show however many beans you had based on whatever reason you wanted. How would you give away your beans? By the way, in this scenario beans are a good thing.”
That was the birth of The Bean Count, an ill-fated attempt by writers to do math.
Even nonsensical games need rules, so here were ours:
- 1. You get one bean for every 2015 show you’ve watched in its entirety. (You also earn one bean per currently airing show if you’ve seen every available episode thus far.) So: If you watched fifty shows, you get fifty beans. Five shows, five beans.
- 2. You can allot your beans to whatever 2015 shows you choose, whatever your reasoning (or lack thereof) may be. All your beans to one show? Okay. One bean to every show? Okay too.
You’ll see from our chart that some people weighted their beans heavily for the few shows they really loved, while others were more inclined to spread their love around. It was fun for us to see the results too, because we didn’t discuss our bean allotments with each other, and were curious to see how everyone’s beans would stack up. We weren’t allowed to collude with each other or give each other beans, and it made every decision feel weighted with significance. Sure, I might feel like giving a show’s bean to another show, but what if that show got left off the bean tally entirely? Could I deal with that sense of responsibility?
Suddenly every single bean started feeling extremely precious, and we’d constantly be saying things like, I don’t know if I can afford to give this show a bean, but what if it gets zero beans?! Did I really love this show three beans as much as that show? Why didn’t I watch another show so I could have one more bean to give? Can I manage to watch a full show in the next three days to earn another bean?
FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS, y’all.
In the end, we think the bean count revealed a lot about each recapper’s personal preferences, as well as what stood out for us as a group in 2015. There’s a nifty chart where you can see how everyone distributed their beans, and a handy pie chart version as well. Because who doesn’t like pie?
Play along! Tell us how many beans you earned this year, and how you’d allot them to the dramas of 2015.

This was a really cute idea! I had 23 beans (not including all the non-Korean or old series I watched) so I'm just going to shower my favorites with love:
Healer - 5
Answer me 1988 - 5
Kill Me Heal Me - 4
Producer -3
I Remember You - 2
Oh My Ghostess - 1
School 2015 - 1
Bubblegum - 1
Sassy Go Go - 1

The Healer love always surprises me. I honestly can't help but think it's because of wish fulfillment or fangirling because it's just a very average drama.
I watched 19 dramas this year so far. That gets me 19 beans. As for bean distribution, I'd only give it to the shows I thought were good:
Kill Me, Heal Me - 5 Beans
Falling For Innocence - 5 Beans
A Girl Who Sees Smells - 4 Beans
Missing Noir M - 4 Beans
I Remember You - 1 Bean
That leaves 14 other shows which get no beans because they were either average or just bad (Hyde, Jekyll, Me is outright terrible that it shocks me it was even made). I have a lot of shows to catch up on still though.
Punch
Bubblegum
The Village
Last
D-Day
Hidden Identity
My Beautiful Bride
Oh My Venus
Awl
I'm hoping some of these end up being better than the 14 that I regret watching.

Haha I agree with the Healer sentiment! I tried watching it but it was also super average to me. The amount of fangirling is probably because girls put themselves in the main character girl's position. She's just that replaceable in my eyes.
Very curious to see Missing Noir M, a lot of people have been talking about it! I also heard Punch was quite good, so I might take a look at it as well.

Missing Noir M is good! It's like Criminal Minds + CSI korean version. The story is a dark but it's good.
I'm really hoping for season 2

I have the same feelings towards Kill Me, Heal Me as you have for Healer. I couldn't really finish that one and always wondered what's the hype about this one (besides Ji Sung portraying what..7? characters)..
While reading everyone's comments I get the feeling that if people love one they don't particularly like the other?

Not necessarily. You can love both dramas. It's just people's opinion about a drama. I also couldn't understand the hype about Healer. It's just so average drama yet so many praise it. It's just a matter of preference.

I'm the same as you with Kill Me, Heal Me. Aside from Ji Sung, I couldn't get myself to care about anyone else. Or the story. I guess some people focus on other aspects.

I mostly focus on whether the lead characters have any real depth or an interesting arc. Then beyond that, it's a case of how well the drama comes together in terms of how it's shot, the music, and the supporting characters.
Kill Me, Heal Me has flaws like any other drama, but Ji Sung puts on a great performance, and the character arc for him is one of the best I've seen in K-Dramas. I think without him the drama would have a tough time being memorable, but he does a great job of anchoring the show and bringing out the depth in the story.
Healer, to me, just lacked that extra impact. The female lead is honestly forgettable. She has nothing going on, and the main male character is there to mostly look cool. I think part of this is probably because Park Min Young isn't particularly a great actress. She's competent at best, so her performance does kind of hurt it. I don't think it's a bad drama, it's just very average. Everything in it just kind of falls very flat. It's competently made, competently acted, and competently shot. The end result is something that doesn't really excel in anything.
Obviously, this is all opinion at the end of the day. We all like different things for different reasons.

"Obviously, this is all opinion at the end of the day. We all like different things for different reasons."
Oh yes, I agree with you wholeheartedly, this is what it comes down to. And we expect different things from dramas. What would the world be without different opinions!? :D
For me KMHM lacked everything in the supporting characters. I could not connect with any of them and the interactions between all the characters fell flat. I really wanted to like this drama (I usually have enjoyed the main actors in their other works). And yes, indeed, Ji Sung was excellent in this drama.
Whereas I liked all the little interactions the different characters had in Healer. And I enjoyed the female lead (for some reason there was something about her that put her apart from other female characters in this genre) and the main lead. Plus it didn't have alot of stupid things in the middle of the plot, which I want to avoid (stupid misunderstandings etc).. I think the main point is that this drama didn't annoy me at any point, which is a lot to ask sometimes :D

I had 17 beans because there were a lot of dramas that I dropped this year. Of the dramas that I finished the ones I gave beans to were:
Healer 3
Sassy Go Go 2
I Remember You 1
Angry Mom 2
She Was Pretty 1
Heard It Through the Grapevine 2
Pinocchio 2
The Village 2
Ex-Girlfriend's Club 1
Scholar Who Walks the Night 1
There were some I enjoyed at the time I was watching it, but when faced with giving it a bean or giving a drama I LOVED an extra bean, I went with the drama that I still love months later. So this is actually a pretty good system.
Healer gets 3 beans based solely on the fact that it's the drama that got my husband to watch with me. And then there were some thing that happened in the news and he was like "It's just like Healer!" So I wish I could actually give it more beans.
Scholar Who Walks the Night gets a bean based on the FANTASTIC scenery chewing, all the times that Lee Joong-gi reminded me of Rudolph Valentino, and the fact that my husband now refers to Lee Soo-hyuk as "The Prettiest Vampire" no matter what drama he is in.

I gave Scholar half a bean for its cast and the scenery-chewing too. I'm still amazed by how Lee Soo-hyuk committed so completely to that role, and how good he was in it. (and how his scenery-chewing skills made him the perfect match for Lee Jun-ki).

What a fun game!
After consulting with my drama spread sheet, I can definitely say it was a very drama filled year for me. I have 36 beans. Would have had a few more but I just couldn’t bring myself to finish watching a few and resorted to watching recaps instead. Did not give myself a bean if I didn’t watch all the episodes, but I did put a few of these shows on the “negative bean” list .
Kill Me, Heal Me – 4
Reply 1988 – 4
Angry Mom – 4
Twenty Again – 4
Oh My Ghostess – 3
Oh My Venus – 2
Sassy Sassy Go Go – 2
Heart to Heart - 2
Heard it through the Grapevine - 2 (for the soundtrack alone)
She Was Pretty – 2
One Beaners:
The Village
Ho-Gu’s Love
Divorce Lawyer in Love
Sunam Girls’ High School Detectives
Unkind Woman
I Remember You
Bubblegum (Until we see the ending, this one is hard to weigh in on)
Neutral Beans:
Ex-Girlfriend Club
Girl Who Sees Smells
High Society
Let’s Eat 2

Mrs. Cop
Scholar Who Walks the Night
Sweet Savage Family
The Eccentric Daughter in Law

I have 13 beans from 13 shows I've watched/currently watching and didn't dropped .. I dropped a few (Ex-girlfriend club, time i love you, scholar) .. now I wish I didn't so that I have more beans, darn it
1) Missing Noir M - 2 beans
2) Girl who sees smell - Zero bean. I love the cute chemistry between Park Yoo chun and Shin Se Kyung. I just have to take away the bean because the writer needs to work more on the crime procedural part or at least consult somone or just comes up with better alibi/story. It still bugged me that they never explained how he killed that girl while he was supposed to be in another country.
3) Who are you School 2015 - Zero bean. I love a lot of things about this how but I hate the ending. Poor Tae Gwang! why would anyone write it this way??? *still outraged*
4) Orange Marmalade - Zero bean. While I love the early episodes, I never warmed up to the tone switch in the later episodes. Show, I totally can't forgive you for ruining what could have been an amazing amazing show.
5) The Producers - Zero bean. I really like this show but I need more beans to give to Missing Noir M and Midnite Diner because they're the underdogs. They need more beans! Sorry, I still love you umbrella PD!
6) Oh My Ghostess - Zero bean. I really like Park Bo Young in this show but I wish the writers give more balance between the two girls. Sigh I really wish I have more beans to give.
7) Midnight Diner - 3 beans. This show is so under-rated. It's so heartwarming. It's quiet, contemplative slightly melancholy mood makes this an awesome show to watch late at night. The friendship between the characters are so heart-warming. I really wish this show had more coverage. It is such a gem!
8) Twenty Again - 1 bean. I love love love this show. It resonates so well with my life right now. I just can't give it more beans because I don't have enough *cry*.
9) She was Pretty - Zero bean. In the early episodes, the girl was too screechy and while I love some of the quiet moments in this drama, and Park Seo Jeoon I loveeee youu. But I can't give you any bean here because I can't fully enjoy this drama due to the screech and the fear/gossipmonger of characters dying. I've never watched a romcom with trepidation of omg i hope no one dies. It kinds ruins this show for me.
10) Six Flying Dragons - 2 beans. Only because it's on-going and I think other people will give it more beans. So far I love everything about this show.
11) Sassy Go Go - 3 beans. This is the most positive show I've seen and I love the cheerful positive message and I love Crinkle eyes + Grumptopus + all the comments from dramabeans.
12) Answer me 1988 - 1 bean. I'm totally rooting for Sun Woo and Bo Ra, my fave characters. I would have given this show more beans but Girlfriday's love for this show has already showered it with enough beans hahaha.
13) Oh My Venus - Zero bean. I really want to love this show but the whole chaebol storyline really ruins this show for me...

I need more beans to give to Midnite Diner and Missing Noir M *sigh*. I feel they're so under-rated.
I started with 1 beans for each show I watched then took away some beans because I hated the endings of some show.
This is a really fun game and made me realize I have watched a lot of drama this year (i normally watched 2-3 drama/year) but yet I'm now crying for not having enough beans hahaha.
Maybe I should have just given all my 13 beans to Midnite diner because it's so under-rated and I wish it had been recapped here at Dramabeans. I think more people would have watched it if it had been recapped here.
Or should I just give all 13 beans to Sassy Go go because that drama was so high, it just made me smile to think of it?

hahaha Warm and Cozy is from this year, so I have 1 extra bean to give out hurray! So not giving it to Warm and Cozy - it's a sin to pair Yoo Yeon Seok with Kang So Ra and made the writing that bad. Bad writer bad writer.
So I have 14 beans! and I've decided that I should get beans from variety shows I watch (1n2d, Running Man, Infinity Challenge), this brings me up to 17 beans hurray.
Bean re-distribution:
Sassy Go Go - 7 beans because you're an AWESOME show that makes me smile just thinking about it and I still can't get that whistling tune out of my head!
Midnight Diner - 4 beans. Good food+ good company = an awfully good time.
Twenty Again - 3 beans. Ha No Ra you're an awesome woman with an awesome boyfriend Professor Grumpypants! It's never too late to follow your dreams!
Missing Noir M - 2 beans. I'm waiting for season 2 please :) so i can give it more beans later
Answer me 1988 - 1 bean. Girlfriday's love gives you plenty of beans hahaha
I've decided not to give any beans to SixFlying Dragons because it's going to run until 2016, so I can give it beans next year!

I get 26 beans this year! (Really?! When did I find the time...) I think I have those 12-episode dramas to thank for that so I hope KBS continues to do those occasionally. I really like that length for a drama :)
So here goes:
Healer: 6
Answer Me, 1988: 4
Awl: 2
Twenty Again: 2
I Remember You: 2
Last: 2
Heart to Heart: 1
Oh My Ghostess: 1
Ex-Girlfriend Club: 1
Bubblegum: 1
Kill Me, Heal Me: 1
Six-flying Dragons: 1
Mask: 1
Midnight Diner: 1
(Hard to leave Sassy Go, Go, Angry Mom & a few others out, but it had to be done. Healer remains a successful thief until the end.)

I am very happy with how the bean count turned out though! Especially happy to see JB and GF giving Awl some love. Great to see that you are enjoying it as much as I am. And I did not expect Last to do so well so that is really awesome to see too.
Unfortunately, I've been saving Punch to watch with a friend of mine (we're both huge Kim Rae-won fans) when she visits in January so I can't give it any beans :( But seeing how much Heads and Gummi loved it, I'm now even more excited to finally see it!
And, thank you, GF, for catapulting Answer Me into 2nd place. Because I have finally caught up with it over the last few days, and, I gotta say, I am really loving it. I'm pretty sure it's made me cry every episode.

I have 21 beans, but I've decided to only give beans to those dramas I would actually want to re-watch partly or in their entirety. Far too many of the dramas I watched felt lukewarm and not original enough to be exciting and as fun to watch.
Answer Me 1988 - 8
Healer - 2
Pinocchio - 2
Kill Me Heal Me - 1
Oh My Ghostess - 2
Twenty Again - 1
Hyde, Jekyll and Me - 1
Ho-gu’s Love - 3
Because It’s the First Time - 1
I'll be honest though and say that I seriously considered giving all my beans to Reply 1988. I had to force myself to be considerate to the other dramas I really enjoyed. I understand why girlfriday gave it so many beans. I thought Reply 1997 would forever be my favourite, but then Reply 1988 took me by complete surprise and might end up being my favourite out of the Reply series. The only K-drama I like better than Reply 1997 and Reply 1988 is Coffee Prince. There is just something magical about the Reply series. It's like reading or watching a memoir.

I have 24 beans:
Healer-5
By far the best of the year: secret identities, suspense, and feels!
Who Are You 2015-2
Second-Lead Shipping! Disappointing on the heroine's growth arch.
Sassy Go Go-2
Loved the characters. The plot was meh.
Orange Marmalade-3
Loved the beginning, the feels; lost momentum with the time slip.
What Happens to My Family-1
Loved it until the main couple got together. Got increasingly slappy.
Angry Mom-4
Good issues, great characters, causes to root for, lovesick teenagers!
She Was Pretty-1
Hated the premise and the slapstick. My bean is all for Siwon!
Heard it Through the Grapevine-3
Loved the cinematics and the beginning part of the teen couple...lost interest as it drifted to the power plays of the rich couple.
High Society-1
Secondary couple shipping!
Pinocchio-1
Nice repeat of a love story, but somehow missing something to make it stand out above the others. I'd probably have loved it more if it was one of my first dramas.
Yong Pal-1
So much potential! Sigh.

Shows I forgot about/failed to finish/dropped:
Hogu's Love - lost interest around episode 8
Heard It Through the Grapevine - lost interest around episode 7
Time I've Loved You - watched until episode 5 just for Ha Ji Won but in the end had to drop it due to extreme boringness.
Jekyll, Hyde and Me - Gave it the old 4 episode chance. What a hot mess..
Ex-Girlfriend's Club - watched 2 episodes then forgot about it. Might pick it back up soon.
High Society - watched 5 episodes, the plot bored me to tears.
Orange Marmalade - watched 4 episodes. Not for me.

Out of the 9 shows that got 7 or more beans, i did not watch twenty again or punch. But they are on my binge list since winter finale is over and i can watch more dramas now (currently, just watching awl, omv, and am88....and playing the waiting game for subs). I don't know whether to start a new show like cat or remember or catch up to SFD. What i like is that the recappers gave some mad love for 'last'. I love me some yoon kye-sang as much as i love lee joon ki.
Out of the 30 dramas, I haven't seen 12..... But I'm sure I've seen more that was not listed (but was recapped)..and i also binged watch older shows during summer break. ?
If i were to give 1 beans for every show i watch, i will give one to each of them to be fair ;). Except time to love bc i dropped that early on and keep that bean. I did say i was gonna be fair. ?

hahaha i think it's more like 90% Healer love in Dramabeans? and don't worry Healer fans don't stone people. Their love is very healing.
I didn't watch it when it aired and have only started watching halfway. For me it's a case of I would have liked it better if I had watched it when it aired because i've got such high expectations for it now that there's no way it can match. So i get why people love it but I don't go gaga over it myself.

An inaugural year for this is the year I discovered Kdramas. The second Kdrama I ever watched was Healer and it was the drama that made me realize I like Kdramas. Since then I have earned 29 beans. Here's how I allocate:
Healer - 7 (Kinda spoiled me for other Kdramas)
Girl Who Sees Smells - 2 (Cuteness and humor)
The Producers - 2 (IU saves this from getting no beans)
I Remember You - 3 (Brothers and serial killers)
Midnight Diner - 2 (Good looking food and theme song)
Oh My Ghostess - 6 (Park Bo Young earns most of these)
Last - 2 (Soundtrack and Penthouse fight scene)
Twenty Again - 4 (Well cast)

Oh man that was hard !!!! I came down to my last two beans and it was either give one to yongpal or x it off the list so it could each go to my fav shows of the year !!!! Haha I ended up giving yongpal zero.
I had 16 beans and of the 16, 11 shows made it !
000 - oh my ghost (i watched this show twice by the time it ended !)
000 - oh my Venus (the actors are just toooooooo good. I've been waiting for shin Mina for so long to come back)
00 - healer (I think if healer was on right now it would have a lot more beans for me. But I remember just being so caught into the hype that I was so excited about it. Now that time has passed, I think my objectivity has made it less appealing. But it's stil up there !)
0 - warm and cozy (it had its moments and it carried me to the end)
0 - producer (it was worth the experiment too bad it didn't last)
0 - Pinocchio (park shin hye became more alive to me in this one)
0 - love cells (Sooo cute)
0 - let's eat 2 (who doesn't love watching people eat ??!?)
0 - girl who sees smells (comedy is hilarious)
0 - I remember you (love the Sherlock vibe)
0 - orange marmalade (it started out Sooo good then it was weird)
