Oh My Venus: Episode 12

This episode is just full of warm fuzzy moments, mostly among Young-ho’s little self-made family. They’re growing closer and more loving as time goes on, which is so wonderful to watch. But dark clouds are looming, and a storm will break soon. It’s a good thing that that family is there, because they’re about to be sorely needed.
EPISODE 12 RECAP
After collapsing in stress-fueled pain, Young-ho is given a pep talk by Joo-eun, and he collects himself enough to enter the event hall. He’s called to the podium right away, and he looks to Joo-eun for confidence just for a moment, before he introduces himself as the new director of Gahong.
As the applause dies down, Yi-jin plunks herself down in the chair next to Joon-sung, and I love how Joon-sung automatically assumes this is another of Ji-woong’s schemes. But as it turns out, her father is one of the CEOs of Gahong. She mentions coyly that she and Joon-sung have lain together, which of course Ji-woong takes in the naughty way, but Joon-sung just grumbles at her to please go away. Seriously girl, go away.
Stepmom stayed at home tonight, and Uncle calls her to give her an update, but not before griping at her for not showing up and blaming her for being the family outcast. He hangs up and heads back to the hall, and we see that Young-joon came all the way from America, and overheard Uncle’s conversation with his mother.
Meanwhile Stepmom looks at a picture of her son on her phone, and tells him that she’s just fine. But she’s definitely not fine.
After the event, Young-ho keeps a straight face as he walks through the paparazzi to his car, but his control slips when he sees Joo-eun being jostled by the crowd. But she sends him a little finger-heart, and he winks back, and his expression relaxes.
Once he’s gone, Joo-eun sits on the steps to rest her feet, sore from her ultra-high heels. She’s there for quite some time, seeming to be actually injured, until someone approaches her — it’s Young-ho. He says he forgot to tell her how pretty she looked today, “… pretty enough to be in my dreams every night.” Well, excuse me while I swoon.
He notices Joo-eun massaging her foot, and kneels to check it out while teasing that she’ll never be Cinderella. He comments on the size of her feet and she counters that she’s not a small lady, and Young-ho agrees that she seems bigger every time he sees her. He means “bigger” as in “more important,” which is sweet.
He suggests they get her foot x-rayed, but she tells him to go rest and she’ll just take her pumpkin carriage home. They both look up to see Ji-woong and Joon-sung waiting for her. (They both look mighty handsome in their tuxes, by the way.)
While Joo-eun’s boys are fawning over her, Soo-jin walks herself to her car alone, staggering and looking unwell. She starts to collapse, but she’s caught by Woo-shik, who’s finally in the right place at the right time. Soo-jin allows him to take her home, but then asks him to leave.
Woo-shik thanks her for helping hide the fact that he leaked Young-ho’s John Kim identity from the press, but she says she just didn’t want the bother. The kind way he’s looking at her gets to her and she tells him she’s not a nice person — she’s vicious and cruel, the kind of bitch who steals her friend’s boyfriend.
Woo-shik just says that’s not true, that she is a nice person, which starts Soo-jin screaming that she’s not. Woo-shik just folds her in a hug, and asks if she remembers that day she passed the bar and had the disappointing blind date. Even as she was crying in shame, she’d noticed his injured hand (from punching her jerk date) and been upset for him.
Soo-jin pushes him away and says that she’s changed, but his sympathetic expression doesn’t waver. Woo-shik says that he understands if she’s mad over the incident with Joo-eun’s stalker, but he noticed that she also ran to the police station that night and protected him. As her eyes well up, he says that she hasn’t changed at all. She still thinks of others first. Soo-jin finally breaks, and sobs on Woo-shik’s shoulder.
The boys help Joo-eun hop into her apartment, a little too enthusiastically, ha. Her mom has come to visit as a surprise, and looks shocked to see her daughter with two such handsome men. They proudly preen when Joo-eun says that they’re her friends, and that they brought her home because she hurt her ankle.
Ji-woong treats Mom to one of his patented attack-hugs, which she thoroughly enjoys, hee. Joon-sung has to physically drag Ji-woong off Mom, who asks them to stay for a meal. Ji-woong notices that Mom is wearing Young-ho’s clothes, and I just can’t even anymore with these people, they’re too adorably hilarious.
Mom sets a huge table full of food that the boys aren’t supposed to eat, but they tuck in, too polite to turn this sweet woman down. Then they turn complete traitor and urge Joo-eun to eat also, who mutters that it’s a wonder she wasn’t even heavier than she was.
Joo-eun texts Young-ho later that night to ask about his leg, and he fusses at her for eating chicken legs with the boys. Hey, someone tattled. But Joo-eun says you don’t argue with Mom, or she’ll nag you to death.
Young-ho tells her he’s starting work tomorrow, adding that she can let Min-joon’s mom know that he’s no longer unemployed, ha. Joo-eun gives him advice from someone who was gainfully employed first, and hopes that his leg holds up. She offers to beat up his psychological issue, but he responds that it’s not something anyone can cure. At least that’s what the doctor said, but now he thinks the doctor was wrong.
The texts turn flirtacious as Young-ho complains that he can’t sleep from all the hearts coming out of his eyes, but Mom interrupts, assuming that Joo-eun is texting Woo-shik. Joo-eun doesn’t correct her, for now.
At breakfast the next morning, Ji-woong and Joon-sung sing the praises of Joo-eun’s mom to Young-ho, who just nods and switches his breakfast for Ji-woong’s porridge, a gift from Mom. He’s jealous!
He starts to give them instructions on how to train while he’s gone for the day, but they assure him that they’re all grown up now and can take care of themselves. Ji-woong says that he misses his Ma’am, crooning, “Oh, my Venus,” which makes Young-ho suck his teeth at him and growl that she’s his. So cute.
Manager Min brings Joo-eun a rose to welcome him to his new job, which is just the sweetest thing. He says that the legal and PR teams are taking care of the scandal talk, but it’s up to Young-ho to deal with rumors in-house. He also warns Young-ho that Grandma knows about Joo-eun.
There’s a small board meeting, after which Uncle hangs out in Young-ho’s office to schmooze the new boss. Young-ho isn’t interested, and Uncle leaves looking annoyed.
Young-ho invites Joo-eun to lunch, but she’s just eaten, so he suggests a video chat. There’s a knock on Joo-eun’s office door, and there he is, looking like the cat that ate the cream. He steals her away from work, walking with his arm around her to steady her on her bad foot and drawing a lot of stares from her coworkers.
He whispers that they have to finish what they started, and Joo-eun immediately remembers his promise to finish their erotic night later. But she pouts when he only takes her to the clinic where they did her original measurements, to get some updated numbers.
She doesn’t want to do this now any more than the first time and claims to be swamped at work, but he already found out from her assistant that she’s free the rest of the day. She pulls out all her tricks, giving him the oppa-pout and popping both dimples at him, but he valiantly shakes it off and drags her away for bloodwork.
Joo-eun makes such a fuss over the needle that Young-ho buys her a coffee treat afterwards, and he studies her test results. Joo-eun gets a bit defensive and says she’s almost done losing weight, and anyway he said she was pretty. But Young-ho retorts that being pretty inside is more important than being pretty outside. Good answer, sir.
He compliments her on her athlete’s build and wonders why she focused on studying, and she gives him the evil eye. He congratulates her on losing all that belly fat, and she reminds him that she can do anything she sets her mind to. He even says that if she keeps up the good work, she may even get off her thyroid medication.
Stepmom brings Grandma her tea and says that she’ll be moving out on her own, unwilling to come between Grandma and her grandson. She thanks Grandma for everything over the years, even though she knows that Grandma never warmed up to her.
Grandma does say that she wishes Uncle were less greedy, and admits that she’s been tough on Stepmom. She compensates Stepmom for twenty years of taking care of her.
Joo-eun goes to Hyun-woo’s place to talk to Joon-sung’s mother, carrying the coat from him with her. The woman already knows that Joon-sung is her son, and Joo-eun tells her not to worry, that Hyun-woo knows everything.
Joon-sung’s mother says that a few years ago, a handsome man came to her and said that he was watching over her son. Aww, it must have been Young-ho. She starts to cry and says that nothing good can come of having a mother with a tough life — she wants to meet him as his mother, but she just can’t. She begs Joo-eun not to say anything to him.
But Joo-eun gently argues that Joon-sung is tough, so even though she’s sorry, can’t she embrace him now? She also tell sher that what happened was’t her fault, and that anyone in her position could have done what she did. She’s not a bad person.
On her ride home, Joo-eun texts Young-ho to say that she met with Joon-sung’s mother. She adds that she’s happy he’s the man she’s with, feeling warm fuzzies from knowing what he did those years ago. He calls her right back to demand that she say out loud how happy she is to be with him. She laughs at him and says that she’ll tell him in person.
Young-ho lets his father know that he won’t be signing the approval for the VVIP medical center — there are too many issues and it will cost too much. Dad basically says it’s Young-ho’s decision to make, but I saw that little smile. You’re proud of your son, aren’t you, sir?
He mentions Young-ho’s birthday in two days, and Young-ho visibly stiffens. Dad tells him to come to the house to see his grandmother, and Young-ho agrees.
Joon-sung and Ji-woong go all out decorating the Christmas tree and wrapping gifts, and aww, it turns out that Young-ho is a Christmas baby. They invite everyone over for a dual-purpose party, and Hyun-woo and Min-joon bring the cake. So cute — the boys are in tuxes again to celebrate their favorite person.
Ji-woong and Joon-sung literally puff out their chests when they admit they did all the cooking themselves, and even Young-ho relaxes his food rules for the holiday. They have a blast, playing games and joking around.
Joo-eun calls her mother, who’s busy making japchae and tells Joo-eun that everything is fine. But when they hang up, Mom wilts a little, and looks at her deceased husband’s picture wistfully.
Joo-eun also gets a bit misty, as she watches Young-ho cuddling with Min-joon, but looking like his mind is elsewhere. She thinks that even on a day when everyone is supposed to be happy, not everyone actually is. Sometimes everyone’s happiness can make a person even lonelier. Young-ho catches her watching him and smiles.
We see Joon-sung’s mother, struggling with wanting to call him, while Joo-eun continues that sometimes there’s a good reason you can’t see the person you want to see. And then we cut to Young-joon, being wheeled into the hospital on a gurney, while Stepmom tries unsuccessfully to call him.
Joo-eun and Young-ho snuggle on the couch, and the hour grows late. She heads home, but says for him to come by her place after he sees his grandmother. He asks if they can finish that erotic night that was interrupted, and she just says she’ll wait for him wearing a pink bow. Sounds like a “yes” to me.
Suddenly Joon-sung comes running into the room, stammering that his mother called him and wants to see him. Aw, the hopeful joy on his face is beautiful. Young-ho lets him take his car and his wallet, telling Joon-sung to take her to eat somewhere nice. He thanks Joo-eun and Young-ho with a shaking voice, and runs out.
Stepmom finally gets a call from Young-joon, but it’s only the hospital calling from his phone. She arrives at the emergency room frantic, and the doctor tells her that it was a drug overdose. Oh no. He’s still unconscious, and it’s touch-and-go.
Dad approaches Uncle like he’d like to say something, but instead just walks away. Uncle chases him down to ask how this could happen, blaming Dad for how his sister is treated by the Gahong family, and now this. Dad keeps his composure and just says that when Young-joon wakes they’ll all talk, but his red-rimmed eyes give away his inner conflict.
Still upset, Uncle takes it out on his sister when she finds him. He asks why Dad married her — if he hadn’t, he would have gotten half of Gahong. He only remarried so that Young-ho would get everything. Unless something happens to get Young-ho out of the picture, Young-joon will never have anything. He walks away and calls someone, and orders them to find out where Young-ho is now.
As he goes, we see that the man reading the paper in the lobby nearby is actually Manager Min, and he’s heard everything. He calls Young-ho and gives him a warning that we don’t hear, and Young-ho panics when he realizes that he sent Joon-sung out in his car.
Young-ho follows Joon-sung when he doesn’t answer his phone, and Uncle isn’t far behind. He’s told where to look for Young-ho’s car and heads in that direction.
Young-ho spots Uncle out on the road and follows him, determined to stop him from hurting Joon-sung. Uncle closes in on Joon-sung, looking murderous, but he’s cut off by Young-ho just as he guns the motor. Uncle’s car spins off the road, but Young-ho’s car is thrown into oncoming traffic.
He swerves to miss a truck and flips his car, and oh god oh god, this is bad. Joon-sung sees the accident and stops to help, only realizing that the man in the car is Young-ho when he gets close. Young-ho is unconscious and bleeding badly from the head, and his bad knee seems crushed beneath the steering wheel.
Screaming for his hyung, Joon-sung tries to free Young-ho, but he’s pinned in the car.
COMMENTS
Damn, I was not expecting that. And it looks as though Young-ho’s already bad knee has been crushed in the accident, which is so not good. But still, part of me hopes that’s what’s wrong and that that head wound doesn’t signal upcoming amnesia, because that would really just be too trope-y for this show. Not that Oh My Venus doesn’t have its share of the old familiar drama standbys, but it manages to present them in such a way that we almost don’t notice… or at least don’t care, since even the tropes are given a unique spin. Throwing amnesia into this would be too cliché, so I’ll say something that sounds strnange without context — please please, let his leg be Young-ho’s major injury.
Again, I still don’t understand Uncle’s reasoning behind wanting to get rid of Young-ho, first figuratively and now literally. I don’t quite follow how his nephew will get Gahong if Young-ho is gone. Whether or not Young-ho is around, Young-joon is not actually related to the owning family, so how would he become the heir if Young-ho were out of the picture? Simply by being the only other young male around? Maybe it’s obvious and I’m not seeing it, but it just makes no logical sense.
It’s so like Young-ho to sacrifice himself for those he loves, and it’s obvious that he loves Joon-sung very much. I’m not at all surprised that he drove his car into Uncle’s path to save his friend and protoge. He has a clear soft spot for Joon-sung, being one of his “weak and in danger” projects that has grown to become closer than his family. I just hope he doesn’t end up losing his leg or making his pain worse, because of his tendency to put others first.
If I have any complaint about this show that seems so open and honest in so many ways, it’s the way that Young-ho’s dad is still holding everything so close to the vest. It’s clear by now that he’s not the cold, distant father young-ho has always percieved him to be, but actually cares very much for his son. I wonder why he holds himself so far apart from Young-ho –– was it fear to get too attached to a sick child? Worry that being too indulgent would make him soft? Whatever the reason, I hope that Young-ho starts to see and feel his father’s love like we’re seeing it. He’s taken a lot of his own personality from his dad, not usually being particularly demonstrative (until he met Joo-eun, that is), and I would love to see both men become closer, and by extension open up more to those around them. Maybe this accident will be the catalyst they need to start talking to each other.
But the best part of Oh My Venus, hands down, is the family that Young-ho has made for himself, and their obvious love for each other. If anyone can help Young-ho, however this accident plays out, it’s them. They won’t let him sink into self-pity or give up, and I trust that they’ll be there for him, whatever he needs. I’m terrified for Young-ho, but I’m hopeful that with the support of the many people who love him, things will turn out just fine. Right??

They are making the uncle, whom truly loves and wants the best for his sister and nephew, out to be the villain but in my eyes the true villains are grandma and dad who've treated both boys poorly and I can't help but feel pity for the woman he married who tried to take care of them both! Smh!

I agree. Uncle's concern for his sister and nephew would be a good thing, if he wasn't so obviously greedy for what they can do for him.
I think he wants the company for himself, by using his sister and nephew's relationship to the family. And, there's already some inference that his business deals are not clean and straight-forward, as evidenced by the dealings at those golf games and Young Ho's refusal to sign off on the VVIP project.
It'll be weird if there's some sort of organ donation between the brothers since they will both be critical. Perhaps, that's how the family will finally be solidify.

If he had truly cared about his sister and his nephew, he'd have asked and respected them regarding what They want out of this situation.
It's not as if they didn't know about the existence of Young Ho from the start, or that the nephew being no blood relation to Grandma would have no stake in the corp. And Grandma did give to mom what can only be money and properties in that big envelop. So even tho they are out of the big house, they are well taken care of.
What's wrong with being loaded, mom not having to cater to the old woman, both mom and son having the freedom to live their lives the way they want, away from the chaebol? Isn't that precisely what Young Ho wishes for but can't have?
What Uncle is unrealistically clamouring for is a high position in the chaebol for his young nephew, so that by extension, he could be in control when grandma and dad are out of the picture, either by attrition or by a coup.
This is what comes closest to being a plot point in this drama.

+1, but I'd also like to add that I think that Uncle and Grandma are kind of two sides of the same coin. Blindly aiming for for something (Uncle with that high position for his son, Grandma with forcing her son into working at the company) and claiming its for their loved ones, but really, it's just their supposedly good intentions being warped into something far dirtier that's a little more selfish than they realize, which results in them lashing out against those very same loved ones when things aren't going the way they want.
Something to that effect would have been a nice parallel to have, just to add some layers to the chaebol/family storyline and those two characters themselves, but alas, I don't think that's happening in this drama.

That's a good point.... Young Ho is trying to escape the horrors of chaebol life but Uncle, Step-mom and maybe Step-brother are trying to get access to it. It's seems such a waste of time and hope to me, since they know that they are not blood-related in a culture of nepotism. It's obvious that father was allowed to hold on to his Director position (as replacement for his deceased wife, the direct heir) to keep the seat warm for Young Ho, so what kind of hope could they realistically have for Young Joon. How much happier they'd all have been to just have lived outside the chaebol home and be a family on their own, without pandering to grandma.
Not quite the jolly Christmas note to end off on!

Well, he can have it. Even if he gets disinherited, he could just go back to America, be a trainer for the stars & make plenty of money. He knows this, but somehow he's chosen to stick around grandma whom he has barely had any contact with for twenty+ years and sacrifice himself for her.

Also, from what I remember, when he came back from America, Grandma didn't want to see him. And when she was ready to see him, she did it only to make him meet a girl she had chosen for him to marry. I really don't understand this Grandma; it's horrible to lose a daughter, but wouldn't that would make you grow closer to your grandson? And now he, poor thing, sacrifices himself for her.

Really? That's interesting, I do feel sorry for the stepmom, but although I think the uncle is looking out for them, going out of his way to ruin (and now kill!) Young-ho is a villainous thing to do in my mind.
Grandma is a real piece of work, trying to force everyone to do her will. But I can sympathize with the dad, to an extent. I've heard there's a Korean saying that a man should cry only 3 times in his life, and while I doubt anyone still holds him up to such an impossible standard, it's clear dad worries that he can't express all his grief without looking weak. And he's had more than his fair share of grief.

One of my favorite episodes - the sweet 'lovey dovey' of Ep 9, seemed too CF like - this one, (and ep 11) felt real.
I LOVE the easy comfy-ness,and mature support between the OTP. It's what is keeping me sucked into this drama.

The poor stepmom. I wanted her to receive a hug from first, her husband and then her brother. Just some small show of support. If this is the dad at the height of his emotions then, this poor woman. I don't care how deeply inward he supposedly feels things, he is so non useful. Just why DID he marry her? Just because he feels things inwardly, he should recognize his wife's needing him for HER feelings during the worst possible situation. Poor sons too.
I also am curious if it's an oversight or purposeful in the writing that Young ho and his brother have had no contact and have not mentioned each other to anyone else. Do they have any type of relationship - good or bad?

I've been wanting to say the same thing. The person I most feel for in this drama is this poor mom. How could she stand being married to such an emotionally unavailable guy? Was it for the purpose of being a Samo-nim/Bu-in? In reality she has been turned into a server cum head chef for the old lady, who doesn't even hide for distaste for her. Why is she so subservient? Is it a psychological issue that she has to be a doormat and slave? If she is doing it to secure a better future for her son, it is rather unnecessary and misguided. Her son doesn't have to be part of the chaebol to have a good future. Isn't it better to be rich AND free?

I love this show but I really cringe every time he talks about hypothyroidism. It doesn't matter how healthy you are or how fit you become, you're still on medication for the rest of your life. Being unfit doesn't cause it and there's no way to reverse it once you have it. Maybe they should have made her diabetic instead as that would respond to getting fitter.

Hhhmmmm... not really. I have hypothyroid since a few years back. It gradually became better, and am now taking a very very small dose of medication. Early this year, I went on vacation for a month and totally forgot my medicine. My doctor said not to worry, because I can actually get by without it already. True enough, the month passed without undue repercussion to my health. He did say one day, he hopes that my thyroid becomes totally normal and I will not need medication anymore.

You had probably better get a second opinion. I've had hypothyroidism for years and while the symptoms go away and the thyroid levels are normal now, I have to have medication for the rest of my life. I had to go a month once without my medication as well and by the end of the month I was one sick puppy. It took two-three months to get the right dosage again and feel better.

Not necessarily true. Just because you suffer symptoms without your meds doesn't carry over to another person and their medication and treatment from their doctor. Everyone's conditions and reactions are unique. One person's symptoms from thyriod problems can and will be different. Everyone has different needs and some of your residual reactions and sensitivities may be related to a combination of your unique body makeup and life exposure, stress level and environment, To each their own.

Nevermind the writing, but this show has been good in keeping it light and funny most episodes.
With major issues REFRESHINGLY resolved within the episode, with direct communication and action ... rather that the typical push and pull methods Kdrama likes to adopt. Or makjang over issues that really doesn't warrant makjang.
Just saw the preview for Ep 13 = I am hoping this will be the continuing trend for resolution - no noble idoicy at this pt, please!
It's almost the end, let's NOT waste next wk on angst. And it's Christmas, for Pete's sakes! While it was fairly ominous as they were taking those snap-shots - it felt like dating the 'PAST' happy times .. WHY show are you delivery gore once again to Young Ho, now that he's even managed to get past his psychological demon with Joo Eun's support?!?
We just need 2 episodes of erotic wild nights after sitting through this writing

I too am wondering WTH? with the entire inheritance scenario. It makes no sense that a complete non relative would get a single thing? In addition, the whole scenario about the 'plot' to prevent Young-Ho from becoming Director was so poorly developed as to be non-existent and completely fell flat at the end with no explanation what-so-ever about how him showing up at the party was such a big deal that the 'plot' was foiled! I too was unhappy about the cliche car accident...so hoped this drama would not sink to that level of cliche. Like you said, up to now it has been so subtle it's not even noticeable.
I also have a big problem with our secondary couple. She IS a total bitch and him I just want to slap. He said to Joo-Eun that she had changed? Lost something? But he says to Soo-Jin that she is the same sweet? person she always was?? WTH??? He was with Joo-Eun for 15 YEARS! They are a family now and he should know her better than anyone. He is SO perceptive that he can see who his new girlfriend is but is that oblivious to a woman he says he loved all those years? Yeah, that is why they had a problem...I do understand. But, I still cannot accept his character's lack of accountability and the drama's attempt to look kindly on those 2. She knows what she did, knows it was wrong, and still inserts herself into Joo-Eun's presence in the most offensive and demeaning ways, constantly lording it over her, attempting to bully her. If she had any decency she would stay as far away from her as possible. If we didn't have the miracle of a character of JE's inner strength, it would be even more infuriating.
You'd think I didn't like this drama the way I'm complaining...nothing farther from the truth. This is the first drama in 100's that I have actually rewatched from beginning to end at least 4 maybe 5 times already...I love it so! How the Heck are they going to tie up all the loose ends in only 4 episodes?

I'm not really understanding any of the business side of it either (I still don't get what the big deal about him being John Kim is... how does that afftect the business... unless it's just because of the alleged scandal with Anna Sue?), but I think that Uncle figures that, if Young-ho is not around, Grandma has no one else to give the business too so she'll just give it to Dad and it will eventually trickle down to Young-joon. It's convoluted but, this is K-Drama.

I was just thinking that, if the inheritance belongs to Young Ho and he dies (he has no offspring), then his heirs are his blood relatives, i.e. his father and also his step-brother - at least in my country that's how it works. That's how I interpreted Uncle's harebrained decision.

Again, OMV is at its best when it is about JE and her 3 "boys", as well as her bestie (and her kid) and nagging (but in an adorable way) mom.
The SJ and WS relationship has also gotten more interesting (the fact that they were on opposing sides in the Gahong battle also made things more interesting and nice to see that SJ stuck to her firm's client and not her BF) - they aren't stereotypical "baddies" (unlike Uncle).
The rest of OMV is just typical average K-drama chaebol fare - really not that interesting.
There was that whole big build-up to PD Go getting proof about the identity of John Kim and then hitting the Korean press/social media - and how that might be what stops YH's "coronation", but at the end, really wasn't much suspense behind it and didn't really seem like it was really a threat (all that build-up for a whimper).
In a way, this reminded me of the build-up of the press-conference in "My Princess" - a big build-up for what was really not that big of a deal (getting over the hurdle was not as difficult as what then build-up made it out to be); the problem for both being rather unimaginative writing in that regard.
But speaking of MP, it shared a commonality w/ OMV in that the best thing was the relationship btwn the 2 leads (very straightforward relationship/romance w/ tons of cute/funny moments) and of their little gang of friends (tho, I'd say that MP did it even better - better writing/dialogue in that regard).
People made too much of YO saying that JE's body was his before he kissed her; not only was that a running joke btwn the 2 of them, he kissed her face (which already had lost the weight) and she does the same back to him. In addition, even tho YO shows glimpses of jealousy (such as the porridge), he clearly respects JE for who she is and her boundaries (which is why he doesn't make a bigger fuss about her keeping the ring given to her by WS since it had been part of her identity for so long).
The whole Uncle/nephew thing was just silly (not as bad as say the asinine plots in "Rooftop Prince"), but really not that much better.
Sure the nephew probably didn't have the happiest home life, but seems far-fetched that he would try to kill himself just b/c his older, half-brother was made a Director of Gahong (would be more feasible if it was a cry for attention).
And Uncle's reaction was not really believable and idiotic (don't think he really cares so much for sis and his nephew aside from what their relationship to Gahong does for him).
So Uncle blames YH for his nephew's overdose and then thinks he needs to kill him? (And not only that - to do it himself and not have an underling do it.)
(There is a small chance that Uncle didn't set out to kill YH and that it was a misunderstanding on YH's part, but somehow I doubt it.)
Another thing which doesn't ring too true is Joon-sung's mother's harsh refusals to see him. Okay, even if there is a good rationale...

I think the nephew tried to kill himself for reasons besides YH being made director. If I had a father like that, and a mom who is a complete miserable doormat, I'd probably be so frustrated I'd want to kill myself too.

Yes, the parts you mention that do not ring true are bothering me. Why should Uncle ask where Young Ho is and not just send his minions to attack him...
Why should killing him make any difference to Uncle's plans except that he may get to push through his shady deals.
The chaebol conflict is far from compelling. The show should just have developed and strengthened the growth arcs of Soo Jin and Woo Shik and given us lots more hope for Joon Sung and his mum, not to mention many more 'family' times with the boys and Joo Eun.

I don't know how politics work in Korea, but in the US, if you have power in a company as big as Gahong, you can push through some lucrative but shady deals. The fact that YH is not just going along without asking questions is throwing a wrench in Uncle's plan.
But you're right, by trying to kill him himself, nothing is going to work out.

Show, drama, don't just tell. Also, her being at the police station had always come off to me as her following Woo-shik to find out where he was going, and then helping him just so she could save face in front of Joo-eun. And even now, I still believe that? But I guess that was all in my head. Psh.
There's a tiny part of me that almost wants Young-ho to have amnesia for an episode, just so Soo-jin can try and snatch him up, fail miserably, get found out by Woo-shik, and then reveal to the world that she is actually super evil and cold-hearted and a calculating mastermind, and had been manipulating half of the players in this company business as well as Woo-shik all this time. It would make absolutely no sense whatsoever, but at least I wouldn't be rolling my eyes at her (or rather, what I think the writers are trying to accomplish with her).
Also, is Woo-shik dating Soo-jin partially because of the memory of her former self? I don't remember the show mentioning how the two of them started this "not-an-affair-if-we-aren't-kissing" thing (if the show did do that, please let me know), but if her old personality had anything to do with it... Sighs. Another missed opportunity. In a show that cared to develop its side characters more, I could totally see this being tied into a nostalgia factor for Woo-shik, whose frantically grabbing onto something that reminds him of happier times just as his relationship with Joo-eun was failing, then "stumbling" across Soo-jin, and mistakenly believing that she might return him to that happy bubble of the past. In fact, Woo-shik just being unhappy with his job and not knowing what he truly wants for himself would have been an interesting motive for him to be involved in this whole "Take Down Young-ho" mission. Woo-shik could have been Nemo, swimming in a sea of sharks and following along with them because he didn't know what to do, so why not just follow the pack of guys that seem to have ambitions of their own, hoping that that drive would rub off on him.
Thinking about what could have been with Woo-shik makes me sad. Just like I got a little sad when they gave Joon-sung a little more back story and all Ji-woong really got was another willing attack-hug victim. (Oh, and the fact that Yi-jin is still a thing at all -- that upsets me on even more levels.)

The plot can go one of X directions at this point:
1) Youngho loses his memory and gets engaged to the chaebol girl, and we have a long and angsty four episodes until he gets his memory and Jooeun back.
[I’ve already seen this in The Master’s Sun, thank you very much and having So Jisub in another car crash with another bout of memory loss seriously feels like overkill. The man’s gorgeous and talented to boot! Why shove him and the rest of the cast into reenacting a well worn cliche?]
2) Youngho’s knee gets injured again and his cancer returns. Cue, terminal illness arc at the end of which he either gets better or dies. [What sort of drama is that?]
3) Youngho’s knee gets injured but it isn’t cancer. He’s just in need of rehabilitation and has to take a break from the Director’s seat. Namchul steps up and proceeds to wreak havoc. It’s up to Youngho to get better and reclaim his throne before Namchul destroys Gahong. [I don’t even want to watch this plot-line. What about Anna Sue? What about Jooeun? How does she feature into this?]
4) Youngho’s injured and needs Jooeun to take care of him. Grandma disapproves but Youngho tells her to put her opinion where the sun doesn’t shine aka. her heart. He can’t make it to the office but does his best at home while Jooeun, Joonsung and the boys lend their support. He slowly gets better, but Namchul digs up more dirt on Jooeun being on Youngho’s legal team and dating him at the same time. John Kim mixing business with pleasure makes a great scandal and he capitalizes on it which results in Jooeun getting involved and there being a media circus and a court case. Youngho hobbles to court in front of the media and releases the truth about the whole Anna Sue this (ie: did he or did he not date her?) and professes his love for Jooeun. Grandma is moved to tears and gives her approval. Youngho becomes a media darling and gets married to Jooeun. Chief Min is best-man. Joonsung and Jiwoong are the ring-bearers. Hyunwoo’s the maid of honour and Jooeun graciously invites Wooshik and Soojin as well. Oh, and Minjoon’s the flower girl. They live happily ever after. I’d watch the hell out of this show. Maybe because I wrote it.

5) Chief Min puts his foot down and asks Young-ho to offer him whatever he needs to give to get him in charge. He tells Grandma that Young-ho's happiness comes before her desires to see him go to work in a suit and tie everyday and promptly "takes care of her" (ie: he sends her on vacation to some place sunny where the sun will somehow find a way to shine into that dark hole inside her chest) before kicking Uncle to the curb but giving Step-mom and son a big, giant hug and a place to live happily and comfortably without feeling like intruders in their own home. Chief Min continues to be a boss. Cue media darling Youngho and your beautiful happy ending wedding. Chief Min continues to be The Boss as well as the best man. Chief Min and Young ho hug before he rides off into the sunset with Joo-eun. They live happily ever after.
aka the "Chief Min, leader of the men in black, becomes The Boss" arc.
(But honestly, "Youngho tells her to put her opinion where the sun doesn’t shine aka. her heart" had me laughing so hard. That was brilliant.)

If it goes dark makjang - some will probably drop out. It's the OTP and their chemistry (light, yet heartwarmingly support, mature and so organically growing) that is keeping me in. Give us more OTP, and the family.
Not CF-cutesy moments either, but with real believable depth as Ep 11, 12 have delivered.

All these while, with so many negative comments about the show, I thought I must dense because I like the show so much. Here, I spill the beans.
It's the first drama EVER that for every episode thus far - I watch it as soon as it appears raw, watch it 2 time as soon as it is subbed, watch it again after reading LollyPip's recap. Then when I have extra time, I re watch again after reading the comments and fill in the gaps. A total of 4 to 5 times with some episodes. Why? I have never done this before. I even put on hold Six Flying Dragons at ep. 18 because I need the time to re-watch OMV.
I guess I want to catch every small screen acting expression shots that they have so many of in this drama. Forget about the plot etc., I just go for each actor execution of his /her character details... perfection! so good acting.
This is my hope. No amnesia. Young Ho is OK after minor repairs. But that his accident is just a devise to accomplish the following:
1. To cement further "Young Ho’s little self-made family" -they will grow even closer and more loving in time of need.
2. To get rid of the phantom pain for ever as he receives treatment and the rehab with JooEun by his side, yeh, he no longer has to endure the pain all alone like before.
3. To open up the hearts and eyes of Granda and Dad etc. to "Young Ho little self-made family."
4. To get rid of the Uncle, out of Gahong forever.
5. Perhaps a half-brother bonding at the hospital.

@ Rafe Amani great that you've got it down, what I thought of too...
My hope from this ending scenario... true healing for Young Ho.
- Young Ho really getting over the psychological pain because he gets healing family-wise. Dad had better come around and grandma too. And if grandma can see how good Joo Eun is for Young Ho, maybe we can drop the chaebol marriage scheme.
- Young Ho becoming family with step-family. He's got so much love for Joon Sung... and is fond of Hyun Woo's son, surely he can spare some love for step-brother, who is now numbered among the weak and needing help (in danger from himself!).
What I'd wish for too, is some resolution for Joon Sung and his mum, more of Chief Min and Young Ho and more family time with friends.

Two things that really piss. me. off:
You think Young ho would exhibit some concern about his half brother being in hospital from a drug overdose before tearing off to rescue his friend from his maniacal uncle-by-marriage. Or did he not know that his half brother was in the hospital? Come to think of it, for someone so kind as to rescue strays, and people in danger, it seems a huge oversight that he has shown little to no interest in his half sibling. Maybe the jealousy and competition from his uncle would be less if the boys were friendlier.
Second thing: The step mom is too damn passive. She never does anything to put the breaks on her older brother, which means she tacitly consents to his plans to usurp the company. By not disapproving of what her brother does, she's passively showing her greed of what she can gain if her older brother gets his way. Then she puts herself in a subservient position as a cook and a maid in the house, even when she has been categorically asked not to. I can't pity her, because she doesn't need to be so passive and martyr-like. It's no wonder grandma doesn't respect her or warm up to her. Who CAN warm up to a doormat?. Ugh. She should show more of a personality. Maybe everyone would take her more seriously then.

No one even knew that the kid was in the country, it seems. It also looks like both sons were oddly isolated from their family, so it's possible they just don't have any relationship whatsoever. Hell, Min appears to be Young Ho's closest family.
The step mom is really passive, but there are people like that out there. She appears to have been trying her hardest to fill the role she believed to be her lot. On the flip side, she's been able to enjoy a lot of seriously great perks while being a skivvy for Young Ho's grandmother.
I don't actually mind her. She seems sad and scared but not twisted. There are certainly people out there like that.

Which is another reason why this whole story about Young-ho giving up his life for grandma just doesn't add up. So estranged, so little contact but he'll just do what grandma wants.

I agree. People in abusive relationships will behave like that – it got extensively discussed in the recaps with It's Okay It's Love, because some people there also didn't understand why the mom character there just sort of did nothing.

I'm losing patience over the whole uncle trying to get Gahong situation. For one, I can't understand what his deal is. Does he want Gahong for himself? Or does he want his nephew to get Gahong? Either way, what has Young ho's presence got to do with this? Even while Young ho's dad was the CEO, he couldn't stand a chance. There is no absolute way he could get anything, what with the witch-looking grandma (sorry, she's getting on my nerves as well) still in control of almost everything and everyone. Say okay, getting rid of Young ho will be beneficial to him. Why now and why in this way? The timing is just all too convenient. I guess the most annoying this is I not only cannot emphathize with Uncle, he's not menacing enough to hate as well. He's just plain annoying.
And yes, no amnesia please. One thing I love about this show is every episode gives us some cutes from our OTP. Really appreciate the fan service. We already know our OTP is strong and mature and are not likely to succumb to any noble idiocy (crossing fingers). All we need now is to follow them through with their healing. That's sufficiently satisfying. Oh, please let there be a happy ending.

I think this is the explanation why the drama starts in 2014. Maybe he needs one year of rehab after the accident, and then it ends with a Merry Christmas (or New Year) in 2015. But then his father has cancer and only one year left to live, so they won't all be happy. I'm really curious about what they're gonna do, something we all think about (amnesia), or something innovative? I just hope they don't amputate his leg!

Yes it is fun to watch the 'gang'. They are cute and there are laugh out loud moments. I loved when the American kid says in English 'Hung, we are not babies'.. LOL!!!
But....the plot is just silly. They do a pretty good campy job with the silly plot but still.....
I feel the sorriest for the poor half brother, Young-joon. Why don't he and YH have any connection? For someone who supposedly is caring, you'd think he would reach out to his younger brother. I don't think YJ tried to off himself because of the company. I think it has something to do with his mom and how crappy he and her are treated.
And there is pretty much no explanation for WS's behavior. Why he bailed on his relationship with JE and got together with SJ? Why he is sabotoging YH, what is in it for him? He seems like a mix of evil and also kind of a good guy. I don't mind complexity, but his complexity just isn't explained enough to work.
But it is warm and fuzzy enough to keep watching... unless of course ..... Amnesia rears its ugly head!!

Henry, that is NOT how YOU pronounce "Venus". And you know full well it's not how you pronounce "Venus", and suddenly pronouncing that word with a somewhat-Korean accent because you almost get to say "penis" actually made me yell at you on the TV screen.
I got totally lost about the car crash, I have no idea how Young Ho would catch up to Joon Sung when Joon Sung had such a crazy lead, or how Uncle would find him. Unfortunately this feels like the writers losing the plot. I hope not, but... uh oh.

True, the writing's been somewhat iffy when it strays from the OTP and Young Ho with friends area.
I don't know what else this writer (Kim Eun Ji) has done. Maybe she? is better in OTP character and romance development than conspiracies and politiking of chaebols.

maybe the uncle just wanted to trash it out with young ho thus the intense chasing?
pretty sure uncle will be kicked out after this incident.
poor drug over dosed boy who seldom show his face, i think his story was useless sorry to say including that annoying gal hovering joon sung all the time.
im just worried whats gona happen to young ho's leg now that it looks crushed... bleeding in the head...oh my poor heart.....
if uncle gets kicked out, woo shik will lose a partner in crime and hope that he changes for the better and accept soo jin instead of pestering joo eun but i think he has a gd chance as i think grandma will block her out of visiting young ho which leaves her with woo shik... hmmm...

If you have noticed the storyline till now is on year 2014. So I guess there will be a pause in story line and continue with "1 year later". This accident might be that pause.

To be honest, I'm not ready to let Dad off the hook. Maybe everything he did was to protect Young-ho, but why do so at the expense of the other people in your life who need protecting? Namely your wife and other child? He's a pretty terrible husband and father to them if he's left them to fend for themselves in that kind of environment just so that the Son-Of-The-Woman-He-Actually-Loved (because it seems like everything he does for Young-ho is to satisfy the wishes of his dead wife... forget about the wished that the living, breathing one you have right next to you might have for her life and her child... who is, coincidentally, also your child) can have a future that, it turns out, he doesn't even want. And the fact that he's old and sick enough to know at this point that he's done everything wrong but doesn't have the backbone to start righting those wrongs leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The accident itself is a contrived scenario, but ok. But amnesia? It just doesn't make sense to throw in amnesia – all it can show is that the writer has zero ideas on how to fill the last four episodes. But maybe that's it... I mean, what else is left other than convincing grandma that Joo-eun is the one Young-ho wants to be with, not some heiress chosen by grandma? Well, and the "erotic night". But the other storylines involving the – the weight-loss storyline, the falling-in-love storyline, the scandal – there's not really much left to be said about those... so what else is there?

I totally enjoy the story so far and kudos to the script writer - this is turning out to be very satisfying show. So I doubt there's any reason for an amnesia trope. It just delays and thus far there's enough material to work with. (Even Yi Jin as a strange filler is funny to watch.)
So. What would move the storyline apart from the clear cut - since the romance department is absolutely healthy statistics - it would be the family front - the strange dynamics between them all. Grandma, ex-director dad, stepmom, YJ and YH. So I'm good if that's why YH is badly injured.
So yes. The injury and accident. Both sons down. It's time to force daddy to come clean on what he's thinking and perhaps that's one resolution we can aim for - tidy up the gahong household.
Though .... I don't get. director dad is technically an employee. And YH dad. Why is stepmom bro plotting murder ??? He's nowhere in line to get anything. Strange fella.

Oh god, I'm crying for Young Ho right now...he's been through hell and back and was FINALLY happy with Joo Eun. Why oh why drama? This went way dark real quick and I don't know how to handle it...
I'm with you on the crazy Uncle. I genuinely don't understand how you go from seeing your nephew almost dying to wanting to kill his half brother. Young Joon seemed upset because of the way Uncle was talking about his mother at the Gahong event not because he wants a stupid company position. I pray that's not why he did that. If anything, he should be mad at the dad and grandma for ousting Young Joon and his mother from the house. Ugh.
Anxiously awaiting the next episode because I need to see Joo Eun and Young Ho together again.

This show definitely delivers the warm and fuzzies!! So much love for our OTP and the family that's been formed!! Truly heartwarming and makes me smile!! =)
I love Jooeun's pep talk to Youngho and how much influence she has on him. She is helping him in so many ways even though initially it seemed that he would be the one helping her get in shape; she is his pillar of strength. Love how the boys take good care of Jooeun and just love the people around her, from Second Ma'am to Ma'am's Mom. LOL
Dad definitely cares for his sons... I wonder if he just didn't want Youngho to get entangled in the office politics and decided to take on the director role after his wife had passed away... After all, if Youngho was sick from a young age, and if he didn't get cured, there would be a lot of opposition from the board of directors for Youngho to head things up. Not to mention, they'd probably look down on him for being unhealthy and would use that as reason to prevent him from being the director, or ask him to step down even if he got that position. Youngho also has zero interest in being director, so maybe it was the only way to keep him happy if Dad just kept the job for as long as possible. But from Dad's hospital visit, it seems that his health has deteriorated and possibly has a terminal illness. So, before he completely can't fulfill his role anymore, it's time to pass the torch to Youngho so he can be prepared to run the business. Dad knows Youngho won't be happy about it, but it doesn't seem like being healthy is within his control. Plus, I'm sure Dad has always known Grandma plans to give everything to Youngho. So, Dad was just safe-keeping that for Youngho. I also think that's why he remarried. He wants Youngho's future to be secured, most likely because he knew what a hard life he's lived already.
It was good to see Soojin breaking down and that Wooshik can see past her facade to the good that's still inside her. Hope she can stop hurting Jooeun.

Oh, the ending was unexpected and I knew that was gonna happen as soon as Youngho realized what Uncle would do. >.< I was actually fearing for Joonsung's life and felt it would be OK as long as Youngho can get to him in time to intercept Uncle... But darn it! Why does Youngho have to be so severely injured?! =((( Let's hope things will work out and Youngho will be OK. Also, Joonsung, since he's gonna miss meeting up with his mom now.

I totally did not expect that scary ending. The show's first half had so many cute, lovely moments. I thought the only big, tragic thing would be poor Young Joon in the hospital.
What a heart-wrenching cliffhanger. Joon Sung's devastated reaction just hurt my heart so bad. T____T
Young Ho has to be okay right? I really hope he doesn't have amnesia. He's got to pull through this. T.T <3

And because it's Christmas, I'm going to give a far out (but very positive) guess as to what may happen.. the accident will not cause amnesia but will be the reason for his leg to heal.. some miraculous way the accident will serve him good. I'm ready to cry bucket loads and be very disappointed but a pleasant surprise is very much welcome too!

Guyss i watched ep 13 preview for oh my venus!!!
He won't get amnesia don't worry! The doctor says that he won't be able to walk and then it shows joo eun wanting to see young hi but she can't so then she cries. Then Young Ho cries in his bed since he can hear her. It looks like a sad episode ?
Hopefully it won't end like Save The Last Dance for Me when Eugene loses her ability to walk (well the last scene shows Ji Sung helping Eugene walk on her crutches but still..)

I might be mistaken, but my interpretation of this scene was a little different. I think Mom was saying that she (meaning Mom) doesn't have to text Wooshik anymore, seeing that Joo-eun is so in love with this new guy she's currently texting that she's giggling, and that she is obviously totally over Woo-shik. I could be wrong tho!

Yes, they injured/killed SJS's character in almost every drama/movie he played! Also in Road no one, ended in a wheelchair, died in A Company Man, was crippled in Always...
Just saw the preview for ep 13, what's with the tap tap? I thought it was clear we had no noble idiocy, bs? Is YH refusing to see her because of some stupid idea like I don't want you to see me like this? Or, worse, because of family issues??

I love this show, but echo another commenter's sentiment that the writing is not the strong point of the story. There are some strong writing components for the characters that are thoroughly fleshed out, like our Joo-eun and her trio, but the other ancillary character arcs are weak. I don't understand grandma, dad, the uncle, step-mom or even the half-brother and his overdose/suicide attempt. No idea what is driving any of them to act the way that they do, but as a collective they are influencing the story, which just makes it difficult for me to follow those narrative threads. On the flip side, I would watch Joo-eun, her boys and even Hyun-woo and Min-joon all day long going about the most ordinary of things because I feel like I understand and am invested in them.
On an entirely different note, I am dreading that this accident will take us down one of two absolutely undesirable and trite paths.
1) Amnesia - like seriously why are you so ubiquitous and readily accepted
2) Noble idiocy - I dread you more than the former option because unfortunately, good sense doesn't just rush back in the same way bottled memories do. I will scream blood murder if Young-ho decides to spare Joo-eun from having to take care of him during recovery, especially if the drama goes the route of having a full-recovery being near impossible.
