Answer Me 1988: Episode 12
by girlfriday
There are lots of secrets floating around in this episode, and to make things even more complicated, everyone with a secret gets found out by somebody else. It’s the price you pay for not locking your doors, right? The weight of keeping someone else’s secret is easy for some and heartbreakingly difficult for others, but as we discover in this episode, what you choose to do about it can define how you love someone.

EPISODE 12: “Loving someone”
On a night in February 1989, Deok-sun’s dad clumsily makes his way home, clearly drunk and carrying what looks like a whole set of encyclopedias. Oy, Daaaaaaad. He at least thinks to hide the bundle before going inside, which I don’t know is better or worse. He’s especially affectionate to No-eul, who just wants to go back to sleep and hates being woken up by Dad’s freezing cold hands on his face.
The girls are still awake in their room, and Bora suddenly offers to let Deok-sun borrow the cassette she’s been asking for. The sudden bout of niceness is odd, but then as soon as Deok-sun puts her headphones in, Bora grabs the phone and waits by it anxiously. That’s cute.
It’s a while before Sun-woo is done putting Jin-ju to bed and sneaking the phone into his room, and Bora is nodding off but she still answers on the first ring. Sun-woo asks to go see a movie tomorrow, and she notices that he’s sneaking in some banmal here and there. He figures it’s okay since they’re dating, but she takes issue with it and he goes back to being formal with her.
They enjoy the fact that it’s late and no one else is probably awake on their street, which takes us around the neighborhood to check in with everyone. Jung-hwan’s parents cuddle, Dong-ryong sleeps in the library, Taek plays baduk, and Hyung comes into Jung-hwan’s room to point out that it’s snowing. And then he insists on cuddling up in Jung-hwan’s bed, which is just adorable.
Sun-woo tells Bora to come outside, and she accidentally wakes No-eul on her way out. Sun-woo grabs her in a hug as soon as she comes out to the street, insisting that no one will see them. Two seconds later, No-eul shout-whispers looking for Bora noona, and they quickly throw themselves against the wall right underneath him to avoid being seen.
Bora says she’ll take care of him and starts to head back inside, but Sun-woo assures her that no one else is awake and grabs her in another hug. This time he kisses her too, which is exactly when another gate opens and Taek comes outside with a pack of cigarettes in his hand. LOL, they all just stand there completely frozen, and Taek slooooowly hides the smokes and turns back around without saying a word.
Bora tells Sun-woo to take care of Taek, so he goes right over and spends the night there. It’s awkward for a while, and Taek smiles when Sun-woo finally starts by buttering him up with, “My precious friend Taek…” Sun-woo says it’s a secret, and Taek asks if he’s not afraid of Bora noona.
Sun-woo says no, he finds her cute. Taek: “Crazy bastard.” Hahaha. Sun-woo: “You know how to say things like that? Who taught you how to swear?” Taek just laughs and says it’s a secret.
Later, Taek practices that very phrase over and over, as Deok-sun coaches him on how to make it sound believable while adding to his swearing repertoire. The other guys complain that she’s teaching him bad things, but Deok-sun says he loaned a sunbae more money, and they immediately join in with curses of their own.
Deok-sun makes him practice saying no, and when Taek and Deok-sun start laughing together just the two of them, Jung-hwan gets up to go. Dong-ryong pulls him back down and says he got a coupon for a free meal from one of his brothers, and they make plans to go together.
Taek says he’ll try to make it if his match ends early that day, and Deok-sun looks over at Jung-hwan expectantly: “And you?” Jung-hwan hesitates, but Dong-ryong nudges him and says that an employee there looks like Lee Mi-yeon. He says he’ll have to go then, which makes Deok-sun scowl.
Sun-woo insists on going to the market with Mom and Jin-ju so that she doesn’t have to carry heavy things, but she doesn’t seem too happy about him coming along. We see that it’s because she’s not comfortable bargaining as much as she usually does with Sun-woo there, and in the end she makes him go home so that she bargain another 50 won out of the bean sprout vendor.
Deok-sun’s mom sends her upstairs with a plate of acorn jelly and tells her to come right back so that she can make a second delivery to Sun-woo’s house, but Bora shocks them both by offering to go to Sun-woo’s. She takes the tray and scurries out of there, and they gape at her the whole time. Deok-sun wonders if Unni needs to get her head checked at the hospital.
Bora mutters that she’s gone crazy all the way down the street, but still stops to check her hair before getting to Sun-woo’s. Deok-sun stops to primp too, and joins Jung-hwan’s family at the dinner table. She’s adorable with Jung-hwan’s dad as usual, and as they toss jokes back and forth, Jung-hwan nearly pulls something trying not to laugh.
It’s like he’s trying to force himself not to think she’s cute, but it’s a losing battle and in the end he just turns his head so that they don’t see him laughing.
Sun-woo’s family looks like they’ve seen a ghost, but it’s just Bora standing there with food from her mom. Sun-woo grabs the chance to get her in his room to “ask her something,” and they set a new schedule for meeting up now that he’s heading back to school tomorrow. Bora says that No-eul is onto them, so they have to meet further away from home now.
He’s happy just as long as he gets to see her, and grabs her in a hug. Of course Mom chooses that moment to open the door, but they disengage fast enough for her to have missed the hug. Bora pushes Sun-woo so hard that he falls to the floor, and she tells him to get checked for anemia before fleeing.
Deok-sun heads out too, and I love the way Jung-hwan stands near the door flipping a light switch just to be around when she goes. She asks when he’s leaving for school tomorrow, and says she’ll see him then.
She asks Jung-bong about the letter from her friend Mi-ok, and Jung-bong blushes adorably and says he sent a reply in the mail.
Deok-sun is uncharacteristically early for school, and gets dressed in a skirt and tights despite the freezing cold. She waits outside the gate for a while, until Jung-hwan’s mom comes out and says that Jung-hwan left ages ago at the crack of dawn. We see that he didn’t go early to study though, because he’s just sleeping in an empty classroom.
Deok-sun’s friend Ja-hyun warns her about seeing a trench coat flasher outside the new restaurant where she’s planning to eat with the guys this week. Deok-sun says she’s the only one in their class who’s never seen the flasher, and Ja-hyun notes that she sounds a little disappointed, admitting that she broke down in tears after her encounter.
Deok-sun vows to study this year and get into college, and Ja-hyun wonders if it isn’t a little late for that.
The moms enjoy a quiet moment now that all the kids are back in school, though Jung-bong is still at home with nothing much to do, which makes his mother sigh. The other moms remind her that there was a time when she swore she’d be happy if he were just healthy, and that she needn’t be greedy about college too.
Sun-woo’s mom coughs (she did once the night before too), and they urge her to buy some medicine if she has a cold, though she brushes it off as nothing. They worry about her getting caught by Sun-woo while working her part-time job, but she’s confident she can keep it a secret. There sure are a lot of secrets today.
The others ask who’s watching Jin-ju, and Mom says she’s found Jin-ju a new friend to play with. Hee, it’s Taek’s dad, who’s sporting a new hairstyle and busy cutting out new paper dolls at Princess Jin-ju’s command.
Jung-bong stands outside waiting for the mailman, and his face falls when there’s no letter for him today. The rest of the kids are busy studying, with the exception of Dong-ryong who gets caught sleeping in class by Dad. Deok-sun looks bored out of her mind but powers through the long day, and Sun-woo rushes off to meet Bora, while Jung-hwan heads home to hang out with Hyung.
With no one left to watch his video with, Dong-ryong heads over to Taek’s alone and peers into the room over the wall like a creeper. Taek sees him and they smile at each other like a couple of fools.
Sun-woo runs to the pojangmacha to meet Bora and asks why she’s studying all day when she’s still on break. She tells him that she’s studying accounting so that she can take a job, because there aren’t a lot of options for her with her police record.
She tells him he’s lucky she’s not studying to get an accounting license, because then she really wouldn’t have time to date. She says they can only see each other on weekends because he has to study for college too, and Sun-woo pouts.
Dong-ryong brings over his latest X-rated rental to watch with Taek, and they pop it into the VCR just as Deok-sun busts into the room. They try to keep her at bay, but she just wrestles them both to the ground and presses play to see what naughty video they’re watching… only to discover that Dong-ryong got the wrong tape.
Bora asks if Sun-woo is mad, which he clearly is. She takes issue with him using banmal again, and he asks if they’re really dating, because it still feels like a one-sided love to him. He thinks she still treats him like a little brother, but when they get up to go home, he smiles when he notices that she wore a skirt just to impress him.
When Deok-sun mentions the trench coat flasher, Taek suggests going to a different restaurant with the gang, but Dong-ryong says they have to go there for the coupon. Deok-sun isn’t afraid anyway and wants to see the flasher, and Dong-ryong figures that there’s nothing Deok-sun is afraid of in this world, save for Bora.
Dong-ryong clams up when he hears mice, and Taek says that he and Dad set out mousetraps recently but are both too afraid to see what they caught. Deok-sun just puts her coat on and says she’ll go out and catch the mice, and then proceeds to chase the boys around the yard with the mousetrap. Ack.
Taek and Dong-ryong flee into the house, and Dong-ryong asks if he doesn’t want to rethink it: “You really like her?” Taek grins from ear to ear: “She’s cute.” Dong-ryong gives him a good shake: “Get it together, Dummy!”
Deok-sun’s dad stumbles home with mousetraps this time, and when he wakes No-eul up like usual, No-eul blows up at being woken up for the millionth time by Dad’s freezing hands.
At the crack of dawn, Bora heads to the library to study, and Dong-ryong’s dad is shocked when Deok-sun comes out just behind her. He thinks she’s finally got her head on straight now that she’s a senior in high school, but we know it’s because she wants to catch Jung-hwan before he sneaks off to school without her.
She gets to the bus stop and hides around the corner when she sees Jung-hwan arrive, and she waits till he’s on the bus to board. He’s shocked to see her, and neither of them has an answer for the other about why they’re going to school so early. Deok-sun just says she’s going to sleep, and Jung-hwan braces himself when she falls asleep on his shoulder.
Sun-woo worries that Mom is sniffling now, but she still denies that she has a cold. She brings Jin-ju over to Taek’s dad, who worries about her too.
The boys eat dinner in class, and Dong-ryong reports that Taek’s match is still going on for ten hours now. They worry about his condition, knowing that he stayed up the night before, and we see Taek look more worn than usual as his game wears on. In the end he loses, and it seems like he throws the game just to be done.
Jung-hwan notices that Sun-woo still has a stomachache since lunch, and tells him to go to the bathroom if it’s indigestion. Sun-woo eventually throws up and gets permission to go home early, and when they see that, Dong-ryong attempts to lie to his father about eating the same thing as Sun-woo. Dad just grabs a pin to prick his finger instead.
Sun-woo stops by the pharmacy to get medicine and some cold medicine for Mom. Meanwhile Mom takes Jin-ju over to see Taek’s dad, who gives her cold medicine that he bought earlier. He opens the bottle for her and they’re just really sweet together, but then we see Sun-woo standing outside the shop holding Mom’s medicine in his hand. He looks shocked and hurt, but just goes quietly to the steps and takes his medicine on his own.
Taek looks completely and utterly exhausted the whole way home, and gets reminded that he has another match at nine in the morning. Geez. That’s brutal.
Sun-woo waits outside until he sees Mom return home with Jin-ju, and then arrives acting like nothing is out of the ordinary.
Deok-sun runs up behind Taek when she sees him ahead of her on their street, and tells him that he must’ve had a hard day, and that he did a good job. It seems like exactly the thing he needed to hear (or maybe it’s just the person he needed to see), and he smiles and takes a decisive step forward.
She’s surprised when he holds onto her arm, and then he starts to lean in like he’s going to kiss her…. Omo. Omo.
But then he just rests his head on her shoulder and stays like that for a little while, and she stammers that he worked hard, and he smiles.
The next morning, Deok-sun waits outside the gate for Jung-hwan, and this time he comes out at a normal hour. So do Sun-woo and Dong-ryong, who note that it’s really rare for all of them to come out at the same time like this, and all they need is Taek to make a complete set.
On cue, Taek comes out to get his morning milk. He makes sure to give Deok-sun a separate greeting, which doesn’t go unnoticed by the boys. Dong-ryong reminds them all about their group dinner tonight, and they race off to school.
Sun-woo can’t concentrate on his studies because his thoughts keep drifting back to his mom and Taek’s dad looking so cozy together. Jung-hwan seems preoccupied with thoughts of his own, and they both try to force the thoughts out by washing their faces.
Jung-bong prays to the God of Mail before checking the mailbox today, and he’s disappointed when there’s still no reply. Jung-hwan’s mom asks Sun-woo’s mom if work is still manageable for her and she still hasn’t been caught, and she says it’d be over if Sun-woo found out. Mom says he’s rather scary when he gets mad, and Jung-hwan’s mom says it’s just because he cares.
Sun-woo is so preoccupied that he bails on his friends and skips night classes altogether, and they wonder what’s gotten into him. Deok-sun is already waiting at the restaurant, and Taek arrives soon after. Taek’s just as shocked to hear that Sun-woo skipped class out of the blue.
The food arrives and Deok-sun can’t handle watching Taek struggle to cut his meat, so she just ends up doing it for him, which Jung-hwan notes quietly. She gets up to go to the bathroom to empty her stomach, and Taek gets up too.
She’s almost to the bathroom when suddenly the trench coat flasher shows up and eagerly drops his pants right in front of her. Taek is a few feet behind her and they’re both frozen in shock, but Deok-sun gathers her wits and says, “It’s so small! There’s nothing to see! Go home, ajusshi!”
She succeeds in shaming him enough that he scampers off, and Taek is totally impressed. But the second he’s gone, her knees buckle and the shock wears off, and Deok-sun bursts into tears. Aw.
Sun-woo skipped class to stalk his mom, which sounds weirder than what he’s doing, which is standing outside Taek’s house looking like a sad puppy. He listens to his mom and Taek’s dad talk and laugh and play with Jin-ju, sounding very much like a little family.
Jung-hwan and Dong-ryong wonder what’s taking the others so long, and Dong-ryong giggles as he suggests that maybe Taek is making his big move. Not what Jung-hwan wants to hear right now.
Taek sits by Deok-sun’s side in the stairwell while she cries, and he scoots closer to ask if she’s all done crying. She tells him not to tell the others because she’s embarrassed, though he doesn’t think there’s anything embarrassing about crying.
Sun-woo is still outside the gate when Mom heads out for work, which is another shocker to add to his plate. Taek’s dad reminds her to wear gloves, and he worries about Sun-woo finding out, but Mom says he’s busy studying and she has to work if she wants to buy him new shoes and clothes when he goes to college.
Sun-woo has to bite his lip to keep from bursting into tears, and hides out of sight as Mom heads off to work. He follows her to the bathhouse and lingers outside.
Deok-sun and Taek return to the table, and she stuffs her face happily. Dong-ryong tells her to slow down because no one’s going to steal her food, but she says it’s just habit. Her eyes get even bigger when dessert arrives, and she sticks the little umbrella in her hair.
Taek just finds everything she does cute, and Jung-hwan looks downcast when Taek reaches over and takes the umbrella out of her hair. Jung-hwan leaves the table, saying that he has to call Hyung about recording something on TV.
Deok-sun needs to go to the bathroom but is clearly holding it because she’s scared. She ends up going, though she’s frightened the whole way there, and eventually she senses someone following behind her.
She reaches the end of the hallway and braces herself, but it’s just Taek. He says he came out for a smoke, but tells her to go because he’ll wait right here until she’s done. Aw.
Sun-woo finally decides to go inside the bathhouse to confront Mom, but when he goes in, he breaks down at the sight of her hunched over and scrubbing tiles. He’s overcome with emotion and tamps down his anger and his tears, and in the end he turns around goes back out, asking the owner not to say anything about him stopping by.
Taek’s dad discovers Sun-woo out in the street, and starts to tell him that his mom just stepped out for a moment. But Sun-woo balls up his hand in a fist and says he knows about Mom’s part-time job, and will act like he doesn’t know.
He meets Bora and asks her why Mom insists on working when he doesn’t want her to suffer, when he doesn’t need or want nice clothes or shoes. He wonders why things can’t stay the same, and why on earth Taek’s dad knows things about his mom that even he doesn’t know.
Bora just listens and lets him blow off all his steam, and then just says one thing: “That’s enough. Go massage your mom’s shoulders. Go home and massage your mom’s shoulders.” She pats him on the back as he tries not to cry.
It’s not until Sun-woo walks home by himself that the tears really spill out, as he thinks back to what Bora said. She knows that he hates it that Mom is working, but she says that his mother hates not being able to buy him new shoes. She tells him to think of it from Mom’s perspective too, because it’s not always about him getting to be guilt-free because that makes him feel good.
Bora: “Loving someone isn’t just the room to give. It’s a desperate need to give because you have to.”
Sun-woo wipes his tears and heads inside with a bright voice and tells Mom he’s hungry. She runs out to greet him and they happily eat pastries as they talk about their day. As Sun-woo looks over at Mom, Bora’s words continue: “You love your mom, right? Loving someone is a really difficult thing.”
Deok-sun’s dad comes home tipsy like always, but this time he stops and warms his hands under the blanket and checks that they’re warm enough before touching No-eul’s face.
Deok-sun and Dong-ryong return to their neighborhood after their dinner, and Deok-sun asks why Jung-hwan just left early without a word. Dong-ryong figures he had to run home to watch the fight on TV with Hyung. But we see that Jung-hwan is asleep on the couch while Hyung is watching the fight. Aw, did you just not want to be around Taek and Deok-sun?
Bora’s voiceover continues: “Loving someone is also never being able to hate a person, even if they endlessly cause you pain, making you endlessly want to hate them, but you can’t.”
Jung-hwan’s mom sends him over to Taek’s house to bring him soup, and Jung-hwan finds him passed out in front of his baduk board. He sighs and sets out the blankets and tucks Taek into bed all warm and snug, and Bora’s voiceover says, “Loving someone isn’t not hating them. It’s not being able to hate them.”
Jung-bong checks the mail and finally receives the letter he’s been waiting for, and kisses it happily. He shows it off to Deok-sun, who’s surprised to hear that it’s from her friend Mi-ok, who’s currently laid up in the hospital after a car accident. She says Mi-ok can’t even lift a finger right now, and Jung-bong tears open the letter to find that it’s anonymous chain mail. Wah waaaaah.
COMMENTS
This episode is another example of what I love about this season, because you start out thinking that the focus will be entirely on romantic love, only to find out that it’s really about a son’s love for his mother, and a friend’s love for his friend. Sometimes Sun-woo seems too nice to be real, but there was a nice balance today between his childish idea of protecting Mom and Bora’s more mature consideration of Mom’s feelings. I like Bora more and more with each passing episode, especially as she shows a softer side that actually cares about impressing Sun-woo with all the little things. But she’s especially great at cutting through the crap and getting the younger kids to see beyond their selfish scope, like she did with Dong-ryong, and again this time with Sun-woo.
It’s inevitable that at eighteen, the younger kids will only think about how their parents’ behavior affects them, or makes them feel. Sun-woo’s concern for Mom comes from SUCH a good place, but Bora is right about him just wanting her to stay at home so that he feels better about it, when really he’s not old enough to support his mother or change their situation in a practical way. It’s undue pressure for a kid to even have to worry about this stuff, but we’ve seen how much Mom tries to hide her financial troubles from him for that very reason. If doing manual labor affords her the peace of mind to buy a few extra things for her children, it’s right that he should keep her secret and not let on that he knows about the job. It’s so sweet that it breaks his heart that much to see his mother scrubbing the floor, but I was far more impressed with his maturity in accepting her decision and just doing his best to be loving and supportive. I don’t think it’ll be quite so easy when it comes to Mom possibly remarrying, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.
I’m really worried about the pressure that Taek is under (and whatever that goddamned medicine is that Dad mentioned picking up at the pharmacy for him). He looked especially worn out during his match, and if he’s constantly staying up nights in order to keep up with expectations, that’s gotta catch up to you at a certain point. It’s not that I think he’s fragile; he’s overworked and under public scrutiny, and people in the show keep talking about how baduk is as much a physical game of stamina as it is a mind game. I do like that he’s expressing his feelings more—he’s seeking comfort from Deok-sun and leaning on her when he needs it, or calling Sun-woo a crazy bastard for liking Bora noona, or just taking the time to hang out with his friends. I especially enjoyed seeing him take care of Deok-sun for a change when he stepped up to be her bathroom watchdog, because it’s so often the other way around with them.
In many ways, Jung-hwan’s approach is frustrating when it comes to Deok-sun, because she’s starting to show signs that she wants to be around him and now he’s trying to maintain a certain distance. But then he goes and takes care of Taek no matter how much he’s jealous or even resentful, and then I get all sympathetic towards him trying to keep everything the way it was. Maybe he thinks that no one else will get hurt if he ends his crush quietly, or maybe he thinks that Deok-sun would never choose him. It’s hard to say because they’re all one-sided crushes, even though I think he might be blind if he doesn’t see that Deok-sun likes him back. But the point is that he doesn’t think of Taek as a rival; he loves Taek as much as he loves Deok-sun, which is the problem. It’s not at all surprising that Jung-hwan is hanging back, when he did the same with Sun-woo (pre-Bora). He’s cautious and observant and so scared of being caught in his crush that he wouldn’t even call Deok-sun pretty around the other guys, so it totally fits that he’d act like this. I love him for loving Taek, but at some point he has to act on his feelings or risk forever being the guy who loves her from the sidelines.

As Seo Na-yoon from Protect the Boss said, "monogamy's the issue!"
Haha, I kid. But I don't want any of the kids to be heartbroken. :( How can anyone even think about Taekkie or Jungpal getting hurt?
Though really, all signs point to Jung-hwan, ngl. I've always been really good at guessing "Who's the husband?" and "Who's the wife?" in shows, and I think my previous track record for the Answer Me series has been pretty spotless...so Imma just go with the ship that seems less painful: Oppa-ya and Sun-woo's Mom.
Actually, that seems pretty painful for Taek and Sun-woo though...eh, these kids will [probably] mature [some more] and get over it.
Alright, Jung-hwan's parents it is!

FINALLY! It took til ep12 to see an OT3 cmt?!
*pounce* THANK YOU! XD
My real favorite dramas are the ones with practically canon trioships, ie triangles with near equal love on all sides & that could very well live happily ever after ~together (& sometimes do!) tho of course it is actually very rare for the writing to be that good lol, but damnit I'm always dreaming of it one day being completely true!
So been shipping JungHwan/Taek/DukSeon since the beginning, I mean just look how cute are the three of them are with each other?? Imagine JH & DS doting over lil Taekie, then the boys both caring for DukSeonie, then DS & Taekie cuddling poor stoic grump JungHwan, lol. Taking turns cooking, snarking, tucking each other in at night, etc etc. Meep, so much squee.. ^-^

I almost think that JH feels conflicted about DS's feelings for him because he's saw her crush on SW first. Perhaps he doesn't think she likes him genuinely, and only likes him because he's been so nice.

Taek looked so worn out this episode... I'm really worried about him. I sure hope he's okay. The preview for next week doesnt look good :(
Bora is starting to grow on me. She's not as violent as the first 3 episodes, and she gives great advices to the gang. Sun Woo is softening her up! They really do fit well together.
No matter how I look at it, I think Deok Sun only started liking Jung Hwan after she finds out he likes her... I want to know WHY she likes him and why he likes her in the first place. I want more development into their story so I can understand them better.., right now, I can't root for them because it's all just puppy love to me.

Omg this. I know alot of people are rooting for JH & DS, but I just can't root for them right now because I just don't know and see where their feelings come from. Why does JH like DS? Because of that sexual electricity he felt when they were up against the walls of the alley? Why does DS like JH? Because of her friends' influence and at the same time she's craving for romance in her life? Atleast I know why TK likes DS, because she has always been caring towards him, taking care of him and stuff and he sees that so it's quite natural for him to end up liking her. But as for JH and DS feelings, I'm not sure if I understand it quite yet. Maybe there will be a more coherent development for them soon hopefully.
Lol. I was in DS's position once. The power of a friend's influence. hahaha. I didn't like this one guy who was into me but because of her constant mentioning and teasing, I ended up kinda liking him. But yeah, it didn't end well for me. LOL. I think at that point I was just liking the idea of me being liked. I was young and craving for romance and attention. But who knows, it might be different for DS. Who knows....

lol pretty much this.
JH-->DS because DS has boobs.
DS-->JH because JH-->DS.
(even though DS should really -->JH because he's a tsundere marshmallow who'll protect her on the subway until his arm falls off, listen attentively and buy her pink gloves, run to her as soon as she calls and feed her friends, and because he's got $$$)
Although I'm sure it helps that they're both caring and awesome individuals and that JH's dad love DS.
At the same time T-->DS because she's got no competition.
I think the show gets away with it because they're 18, and 18 yo puppy loves are pretty much that shallow. Moving into the later years though, I'm excited to see how/if their feelings evolve.

I did. Hence 'It helps... that JH's dad loves DS' but JH had a different reaction to their gag shtick pre- and post- alley scene.
While before it was just a quirk/mild annoyance, now he thinks it's cute. But it feels like now he thinks it's cute because now he realizes that she's female.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a Junghwan fan (ship: Junghwan+ME), but I'd like for their relationship to evolve in the future episodes where they'll likely also be older.

@kickingtenshi
Honestly, I don't understand why everyone is turning Jung-hwan's feelings for Deok-sun into nothing more than sexual attraction. I mean, so every reaction to her antics (like with his dad) now suddenly doesn't mean as much just because of that? That's ridiculous to me. Sure, the alley-way scene happened and changed how he thought of her. But it probably wouldn't have been able to do that unless he had already found himself developing feelings for her. That's just the moment he realized them.
So accusing the connection between them to be shallow and superficial when they act so wholly like 'themselves' with each other seems a bit unfair. In my eyes, the romantic aspect of their relationship is just beginning, but they've had a rapport between them as friends that has always been special. They're currently shifting their perception of what this relationship means to them, and who really cares why? The important part is seeing how this shifted perception will affect the growth of their relationship.
This show has been equally focused on all its characters so I don't mind that they're letting the romance between Deok-sun and Jung-hwan unfold gradually. I think at episode 12, we have certain expectations for where the romance should be, but this drama is different than most, even the other Reply series.
For the most part, I actually agree with you. I think that the next episodes will be super important as they develop their relationship into something more. I guess I just think that they've gotten a more concrete start than others seem to believe.

December 13, 2015 at 11:15 AM
JH's feeling are obviously deeper than "boobs" That's just silly. It's not the deepest relationship in the world, and they aren't even dating yet, but their feeling seem natural and their relationship developed from a childhood friendship. They always had something a little different from the rest of the group. That was obvious in episode 1.
And seriously people, did anyone NOT see that DS was already considering JH well BEFORE her friends said a word? Did everyone miss this... and miss how she acted (quiet for once in her life)? It's amazing people still think her friend are the only reason she likes him. Her friends have cause more problems than anything. They are the ones who say not to confess....
And the notion that Taek is not around girls, so DS is who he likes, is wrong. He's around girls more than the rest of them. You can can see the girls hanging around where he goes to play.

Thank you! I was beginning to think I was the only one who took note of this.
It's like, I mean, seriously? Deok-sun? She has been noticing Jung-hwan's actions all this time. The bus, the gloves, the umbrella, that night he told her to sleep well? She just hasn't known what to make of them because it's been coming from someone that she didn't believe would ever like her in that way. After what happened with Sun-woo, I doubt she was eager to find herself in one-sided love with someone who didn't really like her. At that age, you often need your friends to give you that final push towards realization.
I'd also add that, in this case, after finding out from her friends, she went and looked into his eyes and found out for herself if he really did like her. She's learned and grown up a bit since Sun-woo and isn't giving her feelings as easily.
And no matter what anyone says, you don't just like someone because they like you. Now, it may have happened twice with Deok-sun, but this doesn't mean it would happen no matter who it was. Not to mention, Sun-woo is pretty 'easy' to fall for, if you know what I mean, but also 'easy' to get over. But Jung-hwan? He's the type thats just too prickly to fall for superficially. Her falling for him feels grounded in something much more, although I can't really pinpoint exactly why. Oh well, I'm just glad it's working for me :)

i second what you said that at least it makes sense why TK likes DS/ how he starts liking her. he lost his mom since young and DS is probably the first girl who cares about him and she's always there with her sunny personality to cheer him up. it's like so natural for his feelings to grow as they spend more time together. guy basically smiles at everything she says and does. it's more natural than the alley scene.
people keep saying TK is gonna be the next chilbong but from what i see now with 8 episodes remaining there is still so much room for a good, refreshing plot. i hope NO ONE becomes the second chilbong at the end.
ps: i think what viewers need is a flashback scene, preferably sometime soon just so we can trace back to when/how/why JH suddenly sees DS as a love interest. i mean if it's the alley scene.. it's just physical/teenage hormones talking. that's his first time noticing that DS is a woman. i think he's gotta have a stronger background story than that seeing how hard he tries to keep his distance from DS for fear of ruining his friendship/ hurting TK in the past two episodes. i wonder how deep the level of his crush is for DS, and same goes for how deep/ real DS's crush for JH is.

Their relationship is pretty much loveline-by-way-of-fanservice. There were so many ways Jung-hwan could have started liking her, and being inexplicably "trapped together" in an alley that had more than enough room for personal space is not exactly...compelling. The bus scene is explainable (it at least means something from his end beyond boobs!), but it was just there to titillate the audience--Deok-seon doesn't gain any awareness of him from the experience. AM has a long history of gratuitous fanservice, but this sets a new low lol.
Pretty much everything relatable and believable about Jung-hwan/Deok-seon has been his one-sided angst. Once she "likes" him back (thanks to her friends' influence again?), I can't see anything interesting coming of it. Taek/Deok-seon, on the other hand, got off on the right foot, and have more natural, unforced chemistry, probably because they're not trying to stuff the pairing down our throats. It kinda sucks, since I can see where this is going.
And yeah, at this point, hinging the hubby game on Deok-seon's feelings seems arbitrary and externalized, because a) she's very underdeveloped as a character and we can't depend on Hye-ri to read between the lines, and b) she's so immature and has no depth of feeling. For this to work, it would have to be as well-written as 97, or Hye-ri's performance would have to rival Jung Woo's in 94, neither of which could be further from what's been going on so far.

If I've never watched a single kdrama, or dated/slept with/broken up with dudes in real life, I'd probably swoon over JH and DS too.
But having gone to college and having dealt with guys pressing a boner against you, I don't really find JH DS convincing at all.
Even Noeul's 10 min romance in episode 8 was better written. She picked him because he's the first person to tell her to get her act together. I can get behind that, sentimental though it may be.
But JH DS is just ... a collection of otp scenes straight out of a fanfic. Take any kdrama couple, give them a bunch of otp scenes, and of course they'll be a couple. But am I moved? Nope. Is it memorable once the show is over? Nope.. Fangirls will just move on to the next "swoony" otp scene in another kdrama.

December 13, 2015 at 4:47 PM
Yeah, I've watched plenty of anime, and its similarity to Kdrama on this issue is more than a bit disturbing--the only difference is a female audience requires different, more "safe" forms of titillation than a male one. Well, that and the fact that no one seems to realize that it's a problem here. I mean, fanservice in and of itself is not offensive (I'm not made of stone lol). But in so many kdrama, as you say, it takes the place of real, genuine storytelling--just get the audience infatuated with a particular character, and they won't even notice you're not doing your job anymore. Unfortunately, that's what's happened here. Empty calories.
Lilalola
December 13, 2015 at 4:37 PM
Also, I know someone is going to want to shoot me for saying this, but oh well here it goes:
I wish kdrama writers didn't build this tradition of trying to out "swoon" each other with their male leads. And I wish kdrama watchers were discerning enough not to be led along like a horse to a carrot.
In discussing this show, and especially in the comments sections, "swoon" is pretty much the #1 used word. Everyone throws this word around as if it's a codeword for good characterization or writing, or an excuse for the lack thereof.
I see the word so often that I'm beginning to find it a pejorative. Girls, surely we can do more than faint from too much emoting? Im not even trying to be hardcore feminist; I write this as a lipstick and skirt wearing girly girl who's concerned we lack the vocabulary to be self-aware and analytical of what we are consuming from the laptop screens.

Preach! I wish trendies could be more than an endless OTP assembly line, and I'm very sad to have to include an Answer Me in this. This series used to be better than this.
Again, there's nothing wrong with fanservice, as long as it's not driving the bus--and there's nothing shameful about enjoying it in moderation. Some of the very best examples of this genre have walked the line very well. For example, My Name is Kim Sam-soon managed to give us a heroine that wasn't some generic sassy stand-in for the audience, allowed us to get swept up in a believable love story between two human characters (not a list of OTP/skinship checkpoints), and gave us plenty of Hyun Bin as well.

I love this drama, but don't care one way or another about the young romances. I concur that the romances and the young female chars aren't that well-written or fleshed out. But then just as you've said, good writing isn't always a requisite for swooning.
I'm one of those who is watching this for the adult interactions and family parts. There is already so much to love. From that POV, the young romances can just be the garnish on top.

'I want to know WHY she likes him and why he likes her in the first place'
Exactly right? What is the reason he is so hell bent on her and why she is going all gaga over him? Like waking up so early in the morning to catch his tail? I mean this is all okay and normal if you're eighteen when any other boy smiling at you makes a difference lol.But what actually made it happen if this is the one everlasting love we're talking about? Why is it so 'special' in the first place? For now even sun woo-bora's couple seems like more meaningful and made on similar basi.Look how she is giving him lessons on life:101.He can always lean on her for something that he does not understand at all, been a teenager.
While jh and ds is built on the sole reason because this has been happening for the last two seasons. They 'bicker and fight',and audience is gonna love them, because there is so much chemistry. But what after that? It's seriously going to wane out.

I'm honestly confused how people are confused about the reason why JH and DS like each other. I mean sure, chemistry when you're 18 has a lot to do with it. But in general these 5 kids have loved each other ever since they were children. They grew up together, they've seen each other through good and bad. When they're close to be an adult and have crushes, this love that is family-like doesn't go away, it just adds to it. They didn't just meet and then suddenly like each other for no reason.

I'm with you. I've had this same thing happen to me, except it was his one sided love. We grew up together, best of friends. Saw all the good and the bad. One day he tackled me in football and I 'squished". He refused to play football with me after that. He developed feelings for me. I did not reciprocate. But we have discussed it as adults and it really was just like a switch. One day you're my best friend to squishing breast and the realization, Oh she's a girl. I like her!

I am too. They are childhood friends. They know everything about each other. They have seen the good and the bad and still like and care about each other. They spent their whole childhood together. They are family. What the hell else do people need? DS and JH loved each other before them feelings of romance came out. Now they just noticed each other as a man and woman. Seriously, not confusing.
I guess people want a reason like SW to Bora, but I don't think JH and DS need that. We needed to see why SW of all people who like the scary girl Bora. But we don't need to know why JH would like DS or DS like JH. They were already great friends before.
I don't think most of the audience is confused though. Most just want them together.

I totally agree with you, Sky.
What is lacking in the JH/DS line is that so far we've not really seen any scene thats really meaningful or "deep". As a viewer, I find it hard to feel anything for the JH/DS line. Logic tells me that JH/DS are set up to be the main couple, but the emotional setup in the drama so far has been lacking.
I'm not saying that JH/DS cannot progress from their current puppy crush stage into something more meaningful in the future. However, until the drama actually shows us such scenes, emotionally I just can't get on the JH/DS ship.

"Emotional setup" BOOM. that's it!
Like..showing necessary flashbacks at the RIGHT TIME.
We didn't question yoonjae & shiwon's love story, because we've seen a heavy flashbacks since ep2 where we were convinced that this too had a DEEP CONNECTION, they'd realize this as they grow older. reply1997 otp everybody.
In 1994, I was team chilbong but you see the flashback & heart to heart scenes of Najung & trash oppa---CB & Najund didn't have those. *swoony*CHILBONG (but i still liked him as a normal girl) but yeah, they showed a DEEPER CONNECTION between Najung & trash, i won't question that anymore.
In 1988, we're in episode 12 already but we still don't see or feel a DEEP & MEANINGFUL EMOTIONAL CONNECTION/SETUP with the main otp (IF THEY REALLY ARE THE MAIN OTP ^^) I like ryu jun yeol, i liked him in the producers, but so far...i'm digging the taek~deoksun storyline because of how it progresses & we see how it started...and just to add, taek's characters is so mysterious, we'd love to hear his pov and how he really feels about deoksun. no matter what happens with taek~deoksun loveline, endgame or not, i'll always admire the writer of how she had set up taek's own arc, deoksun's own arc and the taek-deoksun story.

omg you're right..
About everything up there in this comment. Logically I ship JH-DS, but emotionally it's T-DS.
Why? That's up there. I mean in prev Reply Series, when you reach halfway, someone had already proposed someone. The reasons had been revealed, and next moves had been taken.
R88 is pretty slow in romance (maybe because the family story which I do adore) and what I mean about slow is.... Junghwan. We don't have much of adorable scene of JH-DS, they're pretty much "swooning" abouut JH's hidden acts or "pitying" JH when he gave us his sad puppy face. (You know the meme of "You two, now kiss!" that's what I want to do with him -__-)
On the other side I fell into Taek's charm, like he does make this 'natural, innocent, but kinda sleazy' moves on DS. Or at least he does something she realize. You would be frustrated seeing him alone playing Baduk all day-and-night long, but when the show put DS in his story, his story becomes as colorful as it could be.
But at the end, still, JH would be hers, and the reason Taek likes her is because something that will be explained later like the reason why Binggeurae likes Trash so much.

I don't understand the whole noble idiocy bit people have been talking about. Jung-hwan refusing to act on his feelings or tell Deok-sun about them makes sense to me. I mean, what else would you have him do? Tell the guys he likes Deok-sun right after Taek did? Go after her knowing that Taek likes her, and, as of now, with no clue as to whether or not Duk-seon even returns his feelings? As far as he's concerned, she' s still bitter about her crush on Sun-woo, so I don't even think it's crossed his mind that she even thinks of him that way (this episode excluded). To go after her at this point seems like a stupid gamble - he could end up hurting Taek, and himself if he thinks Deok-sun will reject him.
One of the things I love about Jung-hwan is that he values his relationships (both with his friends and family) more than anything. To jeopardize any of them over a crush doesn't seem like anything he'd be willing to do. I don't think it counts as 'idiocy' if his holding back is justified - there's isn't some imaginary obstacle he's invented that's keeping him and Deok-sun apart. Your best friend liking the same girl as you and believing the girl you like may not be interested in you seem like good reasons to me. Granted, even if he knew that Deok-sun liked him back, I still think he'd hestitate only out of consideration for Taek. I imagine that if he and Deok-sun started dating, things would get weird in their little friend group, with everyone knowing that Taek likes her as well and whatnot. It's a whole different kind of angst, and I understand if he wouldn't want to risk it. Anyways, my point is that Jung-hwan's caution seems realistic to me, more so than if he'd chosen to go for it.

In my opinion each successive installment seems to build on the buzz and mainstream acceptance from the last one, even though there's been an inverse relationship between quality and ratings. The directing is more lugubrious than ever, the writing is so pat and formulaic it borders on insincere, and the acting is so much worse across the board (save a couple of people) that it's not even funny.
That being said, I'm more than happy to agree to disagree on this point, and I'm glad you're enjoying it. I'm not saying this to gloat that this one isn't working out in a critical sense; I'm saying it because I have a soft spot for the series and I'm very frustrated that it's not. I genuinely hope the PD/writer revitalize their partnership and move on from the series after this (after 97, they've never really done any social commentary--this show has nothing to say about the 80s, and I don't think any of us would miss the husband game lol).

R88 has the best family plot i agree. On the down side, somehow the characters and side stories are too many that makes me confused if its a drama or a sitcom. (and is it only me who thinks that the funny scenes getting low?)
R94 has the best chemistry between the casts, but the plots are pretty messy.
and R97 has the best jokes and progress, but lack on deeper thoughts. (This one is sooo light because it's the first)
It's hard to choose which is the best, because I never find any Reply Series stand out.

Some people seem annoyed by you stating this, but it's true - Answer Me 1994 built on the buzz of being the followup to the original, and now 1988 is doing the same thing. People are out to dismiss 1997, but it had about a third of the running time of 1994/eventual 1988, and told its story without wasting time. And the writers hadn't yet decided to play trolls for the sake of ratings, so I never felt cheated by them.
To give 1988 some credit, it's much better than 1994 so far, thanks to the reduced focus on love lines (thank god, because we don't need ship wars and the parents getting more screen time is a good thing). And the episodes don't drag nearly as much as 1994.

I don't know why a lot of people are impatient w/ JH and labeling his actions as noble idiocy when it's clear as day (even before this episode) that he loves Taek as much as he loves his family and other friends. Compared to '94 and '97 where the conflicts weren't as compelling to me b/c they felt forced, it feels real here. Just like he takes care of his mom and dad when they're sad, he does the same to his friends. And even if DS and JH got together, they would never be happy w/o Taek's blessings.

I disagree. I think it's forced and totally idiotic.
Yes, it's been established that he loves Taek. But isn't it kinda given that everyone in the neighborhood loves each other? I wouldn't say his love for Taek is exceptional, and it shouldn't give him exceptional powers to make decisions for DS in terms of their burgeoning relationship.
His playing hot and cold would be understandable if DS wasn't interested in him. But her encouragement is clear as day and then some. How exactly is he protecting Taek by making DS sad? It's not like if he backed away DS will automatically love Taek, and Taek will be spared of heartache. "Loving someone" isn't adequate to justify a plot that makes no sense. So much could have been solved with good communication and some determined hand holding.

I think his mindset is more "If I go for it, Taek will be sad" rather than "If I don't go for it, Taek will have a chance". Since everyone babies Taek and we've seen that Taek is a special snowflake with a social circle of 4 other people and their siblings, I can see why he's more sensitive to Taek's feelings.
At the opposite end, Deoksun's only really been hinting that she's into him after Taek's confession to the boys. Besides, their attraction is just burgeoning. His non-affirmations with Deoksun might make her sad for now, but at least they'll still be friends.
Maybe it's because I've got my stan goggles on but I don't think Junghwan's actions are idiotic - he's an 18 year old boy who's in love with his childhood friend whose other childhood friend is also in love with. The situation's complicated and his response, while not perfect, is only meant to preserve his friendships with the people he cares about the most. I'm not saying that he's right in playing the noble idiot but if ever there was a time to be the noble idiot his situation would be one of the more acceptable ones.

wait... your comments make me think...
how if the plot twist is that. I mean do you know the Korean term "Raising a baby tiger" which means you baby someone too much that it comes to betray / fight you at the end...
Because I don't think Taek is just an innocent puppy. He's smart. He would keep his very dark-dark world hidden from everyone. Like if you ask for an antagonist in Reply series, Taek would become one in a second. And if JH babies him too much / or everyone else, he would act a rebel or much worse, he would do anything he wants in a sleaziest way possible.
Wait, that's the preview of next ep, innit?

Yes! I'm so sick of him making the choice for Deok-Sun. Oh, he loves Taek so much he can't hurt him. Sure, that's great. But he can hurt DS just fine then? And people say she's not hurting, but she so obviously is even if she won't give up on him. She was upset and crying until he finally said he'd go to the concert At the end of this episode she seemed upset he left so suddenly.
He's going to lose her and it's deserved honestly. He can try again in 5 years.

I watch all episodes raw so I couldn't understand everything, but I just loved it when
- Jung-Bong carried his pillow and went to sleep w/ Jung-Hwan. They make the cutest brothers ever.
- Bo-Ra and Sun-Woo were kissing and Taek came out for a smoke. It was hilarious..the frozen expressions and sloowww retreat w/ the music was perfect.
- DS and JH's dad were joking w/ each other and JH tried to hide his smile. DS and JH are so adorkable together.
- Bora showed up at SW's doorsteps w/ the acorn jelly. Even Jin-Joo was shocked.
- All scenes w/ JH.

I've shipped Jung Hwan with Deok Sun since the episode 3 alleyway scene.
.... but 12 episodes later does anyone feel that their otp game is a bit weak? Like out of all the couples in this show their relationship is the most undeveloped?
I love all their swoony otp interactions. But the problem is that the writer just keeps throwing out these scenes without establishing really strong emotional undercurrents.
I'm beginning to like Bora - Sunwoo so much more. Their relationship went from lolwut to omg true love! Instead of treating the two like a novelty side loveline, the writer developed the reason why Sunwoo is emotionally fixated on the badass neighborhood noona, and you see from their interactions that they bring out different sides of each other.
But DS-JH. Hm... sexual attraction aside, I wish the writer would give us more meat and bones and really sell the OTP. Why does Jung Hwan like her? Why does Deok Sun like him? I'm bothered by how Deok Sun is behaving as soon as she found out JH likes her. Like she wasn't giving him the time of the day, but once she confirmed his feelings, it's like Sunwoo no. 2 again. The 180 degrees change in attitude is not that well written, IMHO.
I wish the writer would show that, regardless of knowing who likes her, Deok Sun can fall in love independently.

also, Deok Sun as a character is not that fun when she's chasing after Sun Woo / Jung Hwan with that aegyo. It's like she's not being herself anymore. Though I've been #teamjunghwan, I ended up enjoying that scene she had with Dongryung and Taek's illicit failed porno (girl's hilarious when she knocks both of them down) more than any of the omg-lets-hunt-JH-down scenes.

Agree. I'd want some development on the romance front as well. JH and DS's love is just the pure teenagery puppy love right now. But this is why I think they won't get together before the time skip. Maybe afterwards they would have some genuinely mature conversations about their feelings like Yoon Jae and Shi Won did in 1997 after the time jump.
Also, isn't sexual attraction usually thing that governs teenage crushes? I think JH's crush on DS grew out of a physical attraction and morphed into an actual liking for a girl who is always cheery, playful and optimistic even despite the fact that she is the most neglected child in her family. DS is strong and feisty in her own way unlike Bo Ra who is used to enjoying the privilege of being the intelligent, pretty eldest child. Also, she is really cute. So I kind of understand JH's side of things.
But what I want to know is why DS likes JH back now. I mean at this point I'm being made to think that if she comes to know that Taek likes her, she will start chasing him too. So really, the writer-nim needs to step up his game and add more depth to the DS-JH relationship.

I don't think out of sexual attraction you start liking someone..especially at that time when your thoughts should be more clear and more solid. And I would like to say honestly if their attachment started out of physical attraction, not something that makes them connect then I don't see any point of them happening again in future and make any meaningful conversation. That still makes it born on a futile more vague basis, which goes down back to the alley scene.Let's face it,jh started liking deok sun because she's pretty as he says, and for deok sun it's exactly the reason why she fell for sun woo, that her friends told her so.And she's exactly doing the same things for jh that she did with sun woo,not acting her true self at all. This is just a puppy love which happens when you're young and pretty. And this can't be a basis of one relationship that lasts for long.Deok sun just started taking an interest in jh,right after the moment her friends told her that he likes her, nothing else.

I could be giving the writer too much credit here but maybe that's the point? At 18 it was a crush, their feelings for each other didn't have much depth and they could still be friends while they dated other people. The crush dies a natural death but there's an awareness of each other that helps spark a relationship 5? years later.

You mean after years when JH heals from his own second lead syndrome and be more outspoken about his feelings to get through her why he acted like that back than? Yes, that's my conclusion too. We won't be able to see JH's character development but we need to believe what is given to us because at least he lived hell for her so he deserves to get girl. I'm okay with that JH is such a good character after all, but still because of writing I can't connect with DS's pov and I can't foresee how this couple would deal with future problems

That would be quite realistic. But I have a feeling their separation at the end of high school life won't be a happy one and fraught with angst just like YJ and SW's was.
Since JH and DS's connection is one born out of their proximity - both physical and emotional - as childhood friends and lifelong neighbors it is capable of withstanding years of separation just like YJ-SW and Trash Oppa and Na Jung's relationships did. But really, at this point I want more character development on DS's part and I want to know that her feelings for Jung Hwan are authentic and not fickle and temporary.
It would be nice if the writer inserted a scene in which DS confronts JH about backing off because of Taek and calling him out on his selfish 'noble idiocy' plan which failed to take into account DS's own feelings. That would at least convince me she possesses some measure of self esteem which I have found DS crucially lacking so far.

It's exactly the point. There's a reason they are slow compared to the rest. They aren't some deep and every lasting love yet. JH loves her, but she's still kind of up in the air. They'll have some deep conversation about their feelings now, kiss and then break up for 5 years (where he's going to date everyone) and then they'll see each other again in 5 years.
If they still both like each other in 5 years people really can't complain it's just puppy love can they.

I want to correct one thing, as long as JH remains to be silent DS would have no reason to wait for him or respect his actions. We've already crossed half way in drama so at least they need to give JH one standing point. It can be asking help from other friends like counselor DR or considerate SW. It can be giving a hint to girl now it's not time for some reasons. You can't say that much would hurt Taek, can you? But he would prove his worth or determination. At this point I wonder whether he lost all his confidence against Taek or he doesn't gives credits to his lifelong friends. Whichever it is it doesn't ring true to me, sorry...

as much as I love JH-DS, I agree that the writers should explain more about why both of them fell for each other. but on the other hand, I think DS actually already liked JH even before she found out that he likes her. because when her friends told her to ask JH about the blind date, she asked her friends "what if he say not to go (on the blind date)?" and when her friends ask her whether she likes him or no, she said "i don't know" instead of just "no"

I think the thought of a boy liking her excited her, and she didn't want to rule anything out because she wants a boyfriend (as with Seon-woo). I don't think she's capable of thinking about this on non-superficial terms, much less considering his feelings except in terms of her own vanity.

Because they won't fully develop until episode 20. It's obvious they aren't even going to get together until the end. And they like each other because they were friend who noticed they were of the opposite sex. Not that confusing.

Agree with you that the emotional undercurrents for the JH/DS line are quite lacking in the Reply 1988 version.
My brain TELLS me the JH/DS line are set up to be the OTP in this drama, but my heart just doesn't FEEL that way. I think of all the different Reply dramas, this is the only one where I feel really neutral, maybe even disinterested in the main OTP.

Enjoyed the episode.
I started the episode on team Taek, but not happy being on team Taek.
My concern about Deok-Sun being with Taek was that being his caretaker would be a one sided part of being his romantic partner.
Today Taek showed that he too can caretake when needed. As a result I am more comfortable being on team Taek!

I staid up only waiting for the recaps so I can fill in the gaps of what I watched this morning with no subs. Thanks a lot for being so fast about it!
About this episode, I agree with you. I love that the romance parts are not the end all be all of this series. The love triangle blends so well in between the relationships of the parents/kids/neighbors that it feels more organic than past installments. I especially feel it closer to my original love (with was Reply 1997) In 1994 I felt the whole romantic thing (and the who is the husband game) was overblown. Unlike with this series and Reply 1997 where it was a part of the show, but you could enjoy the episodes without too much focus on those parts.
I have a feeling (a gut-feeling) JH is end game. I want to believe the writers will be original and make DS fall for Taek, but through all the Reply series, there's a formula that they follow, and they don't stir too far from it. JH is their Yoon Yae of this series (they are very similar in personalities) and they simply won change the winner at this stage. I can only hope they give Taek the future he deserves. That kid needs love, family (SOME SERIOUS REST) and if DS isn't the woman for him, then I hope he gets all that with someone else.
Fave phrase of the series so far: “Loving someone is also never being able to hate a person, even if they endlessly cause you pain, making you endlessly want to hate them, but you can’t.”

Agree with you about the formula.
I'm team Jung Hwan, but I really think the formula is doing the writing and the story a disservice ... for all the characters involved.
I was so excited about DS-JH back in ep. 3 -4, but the crack factor has died down because the whole noble idiocy thing is so overdone and formulaic. I don't care if you show Jung Hwan taking a grenade for Taek/ds/everybody. Overdone trope is overdone trope. No amount of sentimentalism can cover up the shoddy lazy writing.

Thats formula u've got. But the formula that i've got alittle bit different thats becoz if you watch every reply series theres always flashback scene about their childhood..
REPLY 1997 : flashback about yoon jae and shi won friendship since their child
REPLY 1994 : flashback about na jeoung, na jeoung oppa and na joeng oppa best friend a.k.a sseuriki oppa
u see the flashback always tells about one person “the husband” on 2nd episode reply 1988 the flashback tells about taek the last one who joined the group. thats why i think like previous reply series. taek will be the husband…

I love love looovvee Junghwan. But yes he needs to step up a bit. It was just like him to step back after knowing Taek likes DS. But still.. *sigh*
Is it just me or anyone else reminded of Min when we saw Taek with a cap? Lol. I was like, "Min?" LOOL
I wonder about DS though, so far it's been a repeating things. She likes SW because her friends told her so. She started to see JH after her friends told her so. Did she really likes him or what?
Please just please.. Don't make Taek or JH the second chilbong. I just can't.
On a side note.. Park Bogum is doing such a great job with Taek character. I want to pinch him all the time for being adorably cute, like when he's smiling when SW calls him my precious friend. But he could also make Taek as the genius baduk player.
This season is awesome though, it's my favorite so far.

hello there, I don't think that DS likes JH just because her friends are urging her to do so, if you will remember her sister Bora read something in her diary about the person he likes and that was before SW scenes. I think from the start she like JH only but she's just trying to hide her feelings because she doesn't want to get caught as what she's saying to a scene where she's holding the mittens that JH gave her on Christmas day thru her brother.

The things that Bora said to SW about love and his mom are so wise and mature but don't ring true at all, cos they are so out of character for her. They just completely sound like words put into her mouth by the writer. If Bora had understood any of that stuff, why would she behave like that towards her family all these years?
Let's face it, when she offers to take a plate of food next door, and her mom and sis both freeze, it's not a sign that she's been loving; or when sb like Taek calls SW "crazy bastard" for liking Bora, it's not a good sign either. There are more examples.

"Hate" is a strong word. Only of the female chars in this drama, I like the 3 ajummas and jin joo way more, cos I find them more endearing.
And I don't know about her heart, but then I wouldn't want to be at the receiving end of Bora's behavior from my sister, daughter, girlfriend or DIL. I'm sure the writers will make her change once she is deeply in love.

I think Bora is actually a nice kid from the start. you know the story how she wanted to go to law school (not exactly remember whether it's law school or not) but went to math school instead because of the scholarship, it shows how she does not want to be a burden for the family. and when she comforts SW when his dad died, or when she comforts DS when their grandma died, you also can see that she care for her dongsaengs while they were in the bus on their way to their grandma's funeral, and she also tried to hold back her tears as the oldest child.
I think she's actually a kind and warm kid but she just don't know how to express her thoughts/feelings in the right way.

because being the oldest child is not a better story too compared to a story of middle child. /truestory
When you think back, lots of stories all over the world taking the little children being the main characters. Because they would actually have support from here and there. But story of the oldest is forever being the hidden / overshadow one. (One of the reason why I love Hunger Games tho)

I like Bora. I think she just has different priorities. In the case, of taking food to the neighbour's houses, I can imagine that as the older kid, she's been caught up with serious studying (as she's smart) and also probably has her head full of worries about governmental corruption and student activism. And I like that she puts her money where her mouth is, in terms of her beliefs.
It's not that she doesn't care about her neighbours, as her actions towards Sun Woo as a child showed, but she's just more reserved and independent. She's not the same personality like Doek Sun, who has lots of energy, is outgoing and wants to get into everyone's business. But when it comes down to the crux, she sees the important things. She's just not always available to run errands.
About her fighting with Doek Sun - I think that's just some sisters who are so different, they just rub each other the wrong way all the time and living in such close quarters - everything explodes in their youth.

Did you forget episode 2 where Bora comforted DS after their grandma died?
Haven't you noticed that this show repeatedly uses the device where they show you what happens and then later show you what REALLY happened. Such as DS going to China and seeming like a buffoon, but she was actually taking really good care of Taek.
Bora was always a nice person on the inside, it's just that she has a tough exterior.

My brother is very much like Bora so I completely feel as if it's in character for her to understand Sun woo's mom or have the kind of wisdom to seem past these kids and their complaints. If I ask my brother for a favor even a small one- I get the same sort of tirade. But when I need him to back me up or be the voice of reason or be the older brother- as the eldest son he's always there doing just that.
Dramas only give you bits and pieces of characters out of order. Just because you always see her roughness and outbursts (for their comedic value) doesn't mean she's 100% a tool 24/7. We've seen it time and time again- she might yell but she'll still bring the alcohol. She might sound like a grouch but she'll drive her neighbor ahjumma in the middle of the night to her sick daughter without being asked. She's grown up the eldest girl in a dirt poor family so she's had to fight her way into achieving and getting what she wants. So yeah her personality is unforgiving but it's not unexpected or unrealistic to me at all.
Plus the girl worked her ass off to get into university at the top of her class but instead of choosing the career she wanted (law), she chose the one that wouldn't burden her parents financially. She's studying accounting so she can get a job after graduation. She's independent and has different priorities but she's not unaware of her home life either.
I find her completely relatable.

Spot on. I think it's about perception. One thing about this show, which I like, is that it portrays its characters are complex people - who have good and attractive aspects, and not so nice, very human aspects. And the writers are slowly letting us get to know them through snippets in the scenes. Just because we see one scene, say, of Taek, not being able to plug a kettle in - doesn't automatically mean he's an idiot. It's just one thing we are allowed to see at that moment.

Yup!
Taek case in point, as a character has both attractive aspects: Successful world class professional baduk player, incredibly loving to his father, polite and well mannered, generous with time and money, has trouble saying no and unattractive aspects: smoker, can require a lot of care when he becomes focused on his game, trouble with simple tasks, sheltered and naive.
None of this makes him bad or good because clearly he is a good person by action and character. Granted his quieter demeanor makes him easier to love.
People however assume that just because a person's exterior isn't immediately inviting it makes them unworthy or bad all around. I think SW says it best- they really don't know Bora at all if that's the conclusion they come up with because she's so worth it. She's brilliant, hard working, bold and brave, dedicated to her beliefs, loyal, and insightful. She'll hear you out and then offer you the other perspective. She'll let you steam and vent but she gives you the reality check you sometimes need- the hard truth that sometimes there's another answer to "why" that you're not seeing.

Yeah, she's one of the most poorly written or just plain hypocritical characters out there. Like last week, when she was lecturing Dong-ryong about how he should be grateful his parents can afford to get him brand name stuff when Deok-seon has to live with old knock-offs...was that the same person who bullied her parents into getting her new stuff constantly, at Deok-seon's expense?!

Thank you GF for the recap and enlightment for today's episode!
So far I think JH is more Chilbong than Taek.
His main story is about loving a girl and relationship with friends and family on the sideline.
Meanwhile Taek's story is about his struggle with baduk and his family. What's similar between Taek and Chilbong is only their popularity and cutie pie-ness (which I would like to preserved 'till the end of the series, because I don't want cutie turns into angsty NOOO).

One thing I'm upset about is I missed the old carefree Deoksun. hahaha. She's acting so unDeoksun-like right now. She's still herself when she's with the group but when she's with Junghwan alone, she's not acting naturally as herself. I miss the days when she acts comfortably around Junghwan. Now it's just all awkward with her wanting his attention by being all girly and stuff. hahaha. I guess love does that to people, huh?
But at least Bora is still being her Bora-self when she's with Sunwoo with her constant scolding and toughness even when she's wearing skirt. And I like that. Because she's comfortable enough to display her true self.

I side with you. It's already ep 12 which means we've only got 8 more episodes to go but there's is no extreme changes in jungduk relationship. I mean there's no strong emotional bond between them to bind them for life and everything we are seeing is a mere affection/crush. Well it's not always a must for an otp to overcome countless obstacles and hurdles to become strong and rootable but yes if u compare them with other pairing theirs one is the least strong and fragile one???? I don't know what happened. The Reply series is usually very good at establishing the deep bond behind the otp very early in the game. We see this in the BR-SW pairing, and even in the Taek's dad - Sunwoo's mom pairing.
With JH-DS we get tons of sexual chemistry, which is *wink wink* great. But ... I'm still waiting for the depth and the emotional resonance.

I am so worried. I thought right away that he is collapsing when he started to lean in, at least he stayed conscious. but, maaan.... please, somebody. don´t let him kill himself with his sport.
and about Sun -Woo.... it reminds me when in the 1980ies my parents always threw that line, you know, THAT line: "We cannot afford ANYTHING." so the little me listened and learned to say "I don´t need clothes" and "I am not hungry", pressing down when I wanted something. well I should have just gone to work myself, but you know, at 6 y.o... no bought birthday presents, ever, everything was self-made. fortunately we were not to celebrate christmas anyway in Soviet time. I think SW is used to wanting to take care of his mom as the only male in the family but since his mom protects him from the financial issues, he's completely unaware and naive to reality.

Love isn't logical. A deep, meaningful love can be achieved even when it starts off as shallow. People are questioning why Jung Hwan likes Deok Sun and vice versa. I don't see how this matters, whether it be because of sexual attraction or because of an innate human want to feel loved, as a meaningful love may sprout from such 'shallow' reasons. I highly doubt they love each other yet or anything of the sort. It'll develop with time. Also, despite the fact that Jung Hwan & Deok Sun are most likely experiencing puppy love, people should not discount it's value. Becuase y'no it'll develop. No matter how shallow and superficial their attraction may seem, it has every potential to develop in a deep and meaningful love.

Agree. There's often no coherent reason for loving someone. A person's qualities matter but often a constant nearness and lifelong familiarity can spark something romantic as well.

Exactly what I was thinking. Most relationships start from physical attraction, it doesn't have to be like how sunwoo fell for bora. It's why a lot of people date people they just met and not always their good friends. Deoksun and junghwan already had chemistry, it's why they were so antagonistic towards each other at the start. Junghwan has a habit of constantly teasing deoksun to rile her up, which isactually common for people who have a hidden attraction. I mean look at all the kdrama pairs that started out hating each other lol.. As for people criticizing the writers for not making their feelings deeper, the series isn't over yet. Let's save the reviews for when it's done because you might just get what you're asking for in the next episode lol

"No matter how shallow and superficial their attraction may seem, it has every potential to develop in a deep and meaningful love."
YES to this.
But until that happens, potential is still potential. Literally everything in life has the +potential+ to be something else. How that potential is developed and explored is an entirely different matter.
My gripe with the writer, as a JH-DS shipper, is that 12 episodes is too many to still leave that potential still under-developed. DS's switch on - switch off behavior is too similar to how she handled Sunwoo, and it's making me nervous as hell.
I completely agree with you that love is not a cerebral activity; you can't reason your way into love. More than many other human emotions it is fueled by primal instinct-- hell, romantic love is what sustains the human species. From an evolutionary perspective, the initial spark of romantic love is triggered by your brain on drugs, all to encourage you to breed like rabbits. When you see a potential mating partner, your dopamine feedback loop goes haywire and that's why we tend to think about our crushes obsessively.
Yet for me to believe something is OTP rather than "omigawd sleep together already", I need more emotional grounding than mere sexual chemistry (really, realistically, who's to argue that JH won't be sexually attracted to the next girl that resembles Lee Mi Yeon?). JH-DS has the potential to be so much more, and I'm frankly puzzled why the writer has not explored this earlier. Given the themes of friendship, love, and family in this drama, it would not be out of place at all to explore the "friendship-love-family" aspect of JH-DS. My only ray of hope is the scene with DS and JH's dad. But it's not enough ...

Great post. I wish some people would stop complaining about DS and JH not having some critical super-special event that made them fall in love with each other. In the context of this show, that would be super cheesy and out-of-place. These kids are only 17 (Koreans add 1 year) after all.

People really want some cliched event for a reason for an OTP. Like romanticizing a funeral in the case of SW/Bora. Or JH saving her from danger, something. For me, their life long friendships and then falling love slowly as they grow up is very compelling.

That is a good question, and I have thought a bit about it. There are several possible reasons. First, I really don't think that most of his neighbors would ever even imagine that Taek would do something like that. I think they have an image of Taek, and it just doesn't cross their mind. Second, I think that Taek hides it rather well. Third, Taek seems to have a lot of time alone. He isn't in a large family, and he has a lot of time that he is not around other people. By default, people just haven't caught him. Lastly, Taek is a pretty fastidious fellow. He is shown coming out of the shower rather often (rubbing his wet hair with a towel scenes). The smell from the cigarettes would be minimized by his cleanliness, also. Just some ideas.

I don't think it's often Taek smokes when people are around. At the restaurant, I think he used it as an excuse to escort Doek Sun as he knew she'd be scared. I think he usually smokes really late at night, when he stays up for Baduk and no one else is usually around, or on his trips away.

I think the most tragic thing is that JH knows DS likes him too but not enough to risk their group of friends for it. She fell for SW and then for him without much time lapse or substance. He equally loves TK as much as he love DS. Everyone has always been protective of TK, and JH is the observant protector of the group as he has shown from the beginning when he punched the crap out of the guy who bullied SW. Unfortunately he will have to see that DS won't ever see TK more than a friend or see her as TK's caretaker

I think Deok Sun's feeling for Jung Hwan is a bit forced, they might date but the relationship can't be strong at all. Taek will date many of his fan girls to forget his love for DS. But later Deok sun will feel worried about him and realize her true feeling. Junghwan is going to be the Chilbong, not Taek.

I love Bong hyung is much. His every scene leaves me grinning from ear to ear. I like be when he puts his hand on his heart and Jungjwan corrects him that his heart is on the other side LOL so he flips to the other hand.
I enjoy the two OTPs and the differences of the two relationships. Sunwoo has always been a bit more mature than the others and he is dating an older more mature woman so off course their progress and development would feel more adult like. On the other hand with Deok Sun and Junghwan we got two teenagers who are both to varying degrees still immature and teenage like in their thinking and behavior, developing these feelings and experiencing these situations for the first time. There's is still very much that teen/high school first love/crush that with time, dating, and just being together; can turn into something more or flatter because it's one of those things that's meant to be a first and not a forever.
I am well into my 20's and watching the situation I known it's an easy obstacle to resolve (open and honest communication by all and not this merry go round of bread crumb hints of feelings). However it's because I'm older and have had experience that it's all so simple to me. My 18 year old self would do the same thing Junghwan is doing (chose a true friend/sister that is rare to come upon, over a maybe great love that I'm not sure about or secure in the others feelings -some are still questioning how much DS really likes JH and wouldn't like Taek if the situation were reversed so perhaps he's doing the same-). It's repetitive of past installments/kdramas in general but honestly what about this drama (down to Taek and the friends and family aspect) isn't a repeat of past installments in someway?
I enjoy that Deok Sun has changed and is a bit proactive in going after Junghwan. The small changes (she is still very much her self with the full squad) is exactly like Dong Ryeong said. When a girl sees a man as a man she doesn't behave the same way or show sides of her that she does when he's just a guy/friend. Her wearing skirts, waking up early for bus rides, and putting bows in her hair is the same as Bora changing her glasses or staying up late to pick up on the first ring. Deok Sun has never been focused on her studies so it's a bit unfair to say whatever she feels for Junghwan has changed her in that aspect. She's actually going to school early now and trying to study and take notes (girl underlined way too many things for it to be useful) where as before she'd be reading a romance novel. Maybe being a senior now has something to do with it, but our Sooyeon may actually get into college if she keeps putting in the little effort which is better than none.

Aw, so at this point in the show, I get the feeling that Teak will be OK in the end if he doesn't "win." He's got so many people taking care of him, and he lets people take care of him in a way that will help his broken heart heal relatively fast. And he's more resilient than he lets on. But Jung-hwan... if that boy's heart gets broken it's gonna take years. He's so closed off that nobody will probably even know that he's hurting and he'll just nurse that wound until it scabs over.

It would be so funny if DS husband is the biggest side character on this show.. Dong-ryong
Still believe something tragic will happen to poor Taek

It wouldn´t make sense to, say, make one of the main characters disappear or get sick or die in the middle of the show, and the most fascinating and special character at that. People are already attached to him. I am sorry, but Jung - Hwan and Deok Sun alone don´t have enough pull to continue without Taek. They might put him in life danger of make the community face losing him, but what is the purpose? They already care about him like he is blood from their blood, bone from their bone. There is no way you can make them care MORE than that. He is all of their treasure.
so there is absolutely no gain in hurting Taek.
but if they do, and if I happen to meet that writer and PD I am just going to SCREAM into their ears until the drums burst. you hear me?

in what world? Taek is barely in the episodes and the show would go on fine with him. I mean, I like his character, but he's not vital to the success of the show or the story-line as a whole.
Taek is special in not he's treasured, but the rest of the cast are what carry everything.

Which drama are you watching? I am asking because I am really curious. If Taek is really indeed "barely" in the drama as you say, then why would so many fans root for him? and I'm not even talking about rooting for him in the romantic way, but just that he gets a happy ending. I've also noticed that these past few eps. he's had just as much screen time as JH.

he is actually part of the central conflict. you remove Taek, you have no conflict, when what do you build the drama on?

Woah, guys. Why are we talking about removing anyone? Every character is essential. This shouldn't even be a discussion.

to obviously, i'm not a fan and I do not know who is bogum in the first place. but i'm rooting for him after watching this drama. Not that I have anything against the character Jung Hwan. Since we have a choice of Jung Hwan or Taek, viewers can choose who they are rooting for. Maybe some of them are his fans already, but i'm sure there are many more who just knew him from this drama, just like me.

(Maybe not in 'believe' level) But I have slight side-thinking about that too. Taek is too precious that maybe (evil) writers have fun to destroy with.

If the PD/writers destroy Taek, I will be done with kdramas for the rest of my life ... Which might be the silver lining, since I've quit dramas since college, but got pulled back recently because wok has been so boring.
