Sassy Go Go: Episode 12 (Final)
by Saya
That picture there? That’s how I feel about this show being over. It’s an hour that hurtles by, meting out feels, poetic justice, and ignominious ends as necessary. But most importantly, we’re allowed to say goodbye to the team we’ve come to love, knowing that we’ve left them happier than we found them.
And so, for the last time: Go go!
FINAL EPISODE RECAP
Yeol confronts Ha-joon, angrily asking if Yeon-doo is the reason he quit cheerleading. He accuses him of running away like a coward. Provoked, Ha-joon asks, so what if it is? What’s he supposed to do after watching Yeol save her, after he told him that for the first time, he liked a girl?
Yeol cries that he should have told him. “And if I did, what would it change?” Ha-joon asks. Since Yeol can’t stop now, he needn’t concern himself with Ha-joon.
In an empty classroom, Ha-joon rampages like a caged beast. He throws a fist at the mirror, smashing it.
Yeon-doo catches him on the way back to the dorms, and she asks him why he quit. She notices his bloody hand. Taking it, she asks if it doesn’t hurt. “I got hurt, so how could I not be in pain?” he asks, shaking her off. This time, he tells her to stay right there and not follow him.
That night, neither boy sleeps. They remain awkward the next day. At the lunch bell, Ha-joon leaves first and Yeol looks forlornly after him. When Yeon-doo comes to collect him for their rooftop date, he tells her he can’t eat with her today.
He finds Ha-joon hiding out in the auditorium, and sits by him. Yeol says that he tried not to concern himself with him, but no matter which way he thought about it, he can’t stop with Yeon-doo, “But Ha-joon-ah, I can’t lose you either.”
Ha-joon assures him that he’ll clean up his feelings, it’s not a big deal, but Yeol asks, “If my heart is like this, then what about yours?” He suggests they give each other some time.
Ha-joon gets a call from his dad. He confirms he’s quit cheerleading and reminds Dad to keep his promise not to dismantle the club. Dad tells him to keep his head down since things are going to get noisy at school for a bit.
Dad takes tea with Chairman Lee, the head of the school board, and finds out the Ministry inspection will be this week, so it’s good he pulled Ha-joon from the club. The chairman sneaked the evidence to the Ministry, to prove the club is a spec-building ploy. The men chuckle over the club’s imminent demise, pleased it deflects attention from their activities.
Soo-ah mops the halls, and it upsets her mom to see her like that. She’s here to visit the principal, and Soo-ah, far lighter than we’ve ever seen her, tells Mom that she’s doing well both with her studies, and with her friends. So she hopes Mom won’t come to school or meet with the principal so much, and let her graduate without incident. Mom leaves disgruntled.
Mom’s heard about the Ministry investigation, and tells Principal Choi that they’re in the same boat. But she assures her that she’s disposed of the evidence of their spec-building, and convinced the other moms to support her story. Choi is impressed.
But it all goes south for them in the hearing, where the other moms hang them out to dry. They insist they opposed the club when they found out what Mom and Choi were doing, and even invite the committee to examine the CCTV to prove it. Addressing Choi and Soo-ah’s mom, the inspector asks if it’s true that the club was established upon receiving certain donations, since he noticed the coinciding dates.
The team cheer each other as they successfully run through their routine. Tae-pyung excitedly asks if they even have a chance of placing first. Everyone good-naturedly jeers when Instructor Nam says second.
But they’re dismayed to find the internet alight with the spec-building scandal, targeting their club. Da-mi bursts in with bad news, and they find a notice posted at school of the team’s disbandment, reinstating the original clubs, Baek Ho and Real King.
Hyo-shik scoffs at Real King being “saved” like this, and Tae-pyung wails that it means they can’t compete at regionals. Soo-ah realizes it’s because of the Ministry investigation a few days ago, and Teacher Yang goes to find out what’s happening.
Soo-ah calls her mom, who reassures her that she’ll take care of everything — she’s not going down so easily. But after she hangs up, she clutches a summons letter in worry.
Teacher Im helps Principal Choi pack up her belongings. Wait, what, did she get fired? She snaps at him to get lost, but he dithers apologetically (but so not, haha), explaining that Chairman Lee actually appointed him as interim principal. She becomes convinced he’s the one who snitched on them to the Ministry.
Teacher Yang and Instructor Nam arrive, demanding to know why the club was disbanded. Choi snarls about that damn club, and Im quietly explains that she just got fired for using it to inflate specs. Nam has no sympathy: What about the kids, who just lost everything they worked for because of her? But Im points out that the (ex-)principal is no longer in a position to take responsibility.
It turns out that Instructor Nam lost her job, too. Over drinks, Teacher Yang asks if she isn’t angry about it. He confides that he’s grateful to her, seeing the kids who only knew studying and attainment transformed by cheerleading. It moved him to watch them squabbling, laughing and crying together. Nam beams that the kids did that all by themselves. But she’s worried about how disappointed they’ll be not to compete, and both teachers sigh heavily.
With a heavy heart, Teacher Yang announces to the team that Instructor Nam is leaving them. It’s a decision that came down from the Ministry, so there’s nothing they can do, even if regionals are only days away.
Instructor Nam remains chipper, and tells them to forget all their hard moves and hold onto the happy memories. She promises to cherish her memories of every moment with them, too. She reminds them again, what cheerleading is: sincerely cheering on someone whom you want to give strength, “Most of all, cheer each other on a lot.”
She refuses to do a tacky farewell, and sails out with a breezy wave, leaving everyone in silent tears. A moment later, Yang and the kids pour out of the room and call after her, a chorus of thank-yous.
Ha-joon sees the disbandment notice for the first time, and heads straight to his Dad. He bursts in after overhearing him celebrating the club’s dissolution on the phone with Chairman Lee.
With increasing distress, Ha-joon asks if he really was behind it, when he knew how he felt about it. Dad sneers that it would have happened anyway, and orders him the hell back to school before he pulps him. Fatherly love.
Ha-joon tells Dad he didn’t trust him anyway, but he thought that if he left the club, he could at least protect it and his friends. So how could he do this? Dad insists it was all to protect him, but Ha-joon contradicts him and asks if it wasn’t because he was afraid his own corruption would be found out. Dad erupts in a rage, and slaps his son around the head. Something changes in Ha-joon’s eyes, as he stares down at the man.
Yeon-doo asks Yeol if being eighteen is hard like this for everyone. Yeol agrees that no sooner do they solve one problem, when another arises. She thought it would be enough to do what her heart told her, she says, but Yeol doesn’t have any answers either.
The team try to figure out what they can do, but even the Baek Ho parents have no clout in overturning a decision made by the Ministry. Moreover, they’ve warned the kids away from even mentioning cheerleading. Yeol nods — showing themselves at regionals now would only associate them with the scandal.
Yeon-doo speaks of how cheerleading was forced on them but they grew to love it, and care about each other. It’s upsetting that it’s taken away as abruptly. She understands how they feel, and tells them to take a few days to think.
In class, Yeol and Yeon-doo both gaze at Ha-joon’s empty desk. Teacher Yang tells them that Dad called him in sick so he’ll be at home for a few days. Knowing his ways, the pair worry.
Ha-joon finds himself locked into his room. Earlier, Dad took his phone away and ordered him to stay at home, worried he’d make trouble. He tells him he’s arranging for him to study abroad — maybe broadening his horizons will cure his weak-heartedness, Dad barks.
The doorbell chimes and he hears the housekeeper say he’s not at home. Outside, Yeol argues with her over the intercom, and flustered, she blows him off.
Yeol presents himself to Ha-joon’s dad, hoping to visit him, and tells him Ha-joon’s needed at school. Displeased that it’s about cheerleading, Dad says Ha-joon’s already quit, and Yeol is surprised he knows about it. But he positively reels when he learns that Ha-joon quit under Dad’s orders.
Gathering his composure, he tells Dad to stop hitting Ha-joon, “Even as a parent, you don’t have the right to abuse your child. That…is not love.”
Yeon-doo trudges out of the dorm. Soo-ah joins her, and asks why she’s not trying to talk everyone into going to the competition secretly, like her old self. She even offers to help convince the others. Yeon-doo sighs that her old self was more impetuous, but now she’s worried about the others getting hurt. Soo-ah tells her to take her time: “But Kang Yeon-doo. Don’t give up. Don’t run away, either.”
Regionals are tomorrow, and the team hold another summit. Yeon-doo tells them that she wants to be there with all of them, but it’s their choice whether they come or not. She’ll wait for them at the venue tomorrow morning, and warns them not to hold it against those who choose not to come.
In private, Yeol notes that even if one of them doesn’t show, it’ll be tough for them to perform. She knows, but it was the best she could think of. She hopes the team’s happy memories of the last few months bear out over their struggles. But what about Ha-joon? Yeol assures her that he’ll bring him.
Later, Yeol sidles past the eagle-eyed teacher to sneak out of the dorm, and starts when Yeon-doo catches him — she wants in on the rescue. I don’t know why watching a big guy like Yeol be stealthy is lolarious, but it is. He’s so big!
In the basement of Ha-joon’s building, they wait until they see his parents leave for their morning golf. They slip inside, and Yeon-doo activates the fire alarm. In his locked room, Ha-joon hears it, and pounds at his door to be let out.
Yeol pops out at him at the building entrance, and grinning like crazy, both boys run for it. The dismayed housekeeper immediately reports to Ha-joon’s dad.
The three of them nearly make it to the venue, when Ha-joon suddenly halts. Yeol follows his line of sight to a car. Ha-joon sends them on ahead — he has something to take care of. Yeol tells Yeon-doo that it was Ha-joon’s father’s car. He holds her back from going to him, saying it’s something Ha-joon has to do by himself. He really likes the Kang Yeon-doo who would do anything for her friends, he says, “But right now, let’s trust Ha-joon and wait.”
Ha-joon looks his father in the eye and refuses to go back: He intends to cheerlead with his friends here today. He catches Dad’s raised hand mid-strike, and tells him he won’t be beaten any longer. Pushing up his sleeves, he shows Dad his cutting scars — the evidence of his own self-hatred, the result of his feelings of worthlessness that came from being Dad’s punching bag. But he’s not going to hate himself anymore, he says.
He tells Dad to do his worst, “I’m not afraid of you anymore.” Back straight, he walks away, at last impervious to Dad’s barks. I’m bursting with pride for Ha-joonie right now.
When the three arrive at the competition hall, there’s no sign of the rest of the team. Yeon-doo deflates, just as they rush in — they were in the wrong place. Excited to be there, they fire each other up to go for the win.
But bad news: At the admin desk, they’re told Sevit isn’t allowed to take part, since the school cancelled their entry. The fastidious clerk holds fast to the rules despite their entreaties, but a voice cuts in telling him to let them do it. It’s Instructor Nam!
She struts up importantly, and tells him they’re with her. The kids are totally impressed, but the clerk totally is not. His “and what?” response is killing me. Still blagging, she sends the kids in to get ready, but the second they’re out of sight, she sinks to her knees and starts begging.
But there’s more bad news. They watch the reigning champions perform, and realize how outclassed they are. But Yeon-doo rallies them — did they come to win? Eyes bright, she points out how every single one of them made it here today, “Don’t be disheartened and let’s have fun!” They have a team hand-stack, and cheer themselves on.
When they’re announced, the room fills with whispers and they almost lose their nerve. They hold hands to form a chain and bow low to the audience. Teacher Yang shouts out to them that whatever anyone else says, they’re the best. The teachers’ support gives them the boost they need.
Their routine is humble compared to their competitors, but no one’s grins are wider or more infectious. They finish to cheers. Pulling out their signature move, they each hold up a letter to form the message, “I’m cheering on the me of today!”
Instructor Nam wells with pride, and Yang envelopes her in a bear-hug. The camera lingers a moment on every team member, and in voiceover, Yeon-doo says they should remember this — the passionate and painful time of being eighteen. When she stumbles again, makes mistakes and gets hurt, she won’t regret it, because they did their best for the sake of their happiness today.
Now back at school, the team relive their glory…until they’re brought down to earth by others students scoffing at them for placing last. But it’s not long before they fall about laughing at themselves.
Ha-joon welcomes Yeon-doo to share a giant bucket of gummy bears with him. She notices he’s even eating the green ones now. He places a red and a green one next to each other, and Yeon-doo asks if they’re close.
Ha-joon smiles that the red bear didn’t like the green bear at first — it was too noisy and meddlesome. But it slowly got closer, and whenever the red bear was hurt, cheered it up and brought it plasters. And so it came to like the green bear, learning how to love even while in pain. The red bear wants the green bear to know that he’s grateful. He smiles at her, and she smiles back, eyes full.
Yeol finds Ha-joon lying on the stage in the auditorium again. He throws himself down beside him, laughing that they’ll get locked out again. Ha-joon retorts that he’ll just snuggle here with him, then. They can’t stop giggling and I think I’m going to die of feels.
The conclusion begins, and Yeon-doo relates that Ha-joon’s father had a restraining order filed against him, and is receiving treatment. Soo-ah’s mom is under investigation for spec-related corruption, but Soo-ah talks to her all the time. She sends mom a video message to cheer up, and tells her that she’s sorry, and thankful, and she loves her. Mom’s eyes shine with a real smile. At school, Teacher Im’s reign as principal was a mere three days before a new principal was appointed.
And as for them? They went back to how they were — Baek Ho still the school’s top five percenters, and Real King the bottom-of-the-pack misfits. They face off in their old battle lines, tense, until Yeol crinkles into a smile, “I’m hungry, let’s go eat!” The lines melt away as they attack each other with hugs.
Yeon-doo narrates that if one thing changed, it’s that they found friends they would do anything with. Teacher Yang comes by with Instructor Nam, both reappointed, and teases the kids for being so attached to each other when they’re seniors now. Ooh!
Dong-jae returns to basketball. He exchanges easy high-fives with the team, and despite his cadre of fangirls, it’s Soo-ah at his side when the game is up. She swipes the strawberry milk he saved for Yeon-doo.
Which just leaves their story, Yeon-doo says. Their parents started to love again, and Yeol isn’t so against it anymore. At a family dinner, he smiles to watch them fuss over each other.
He thinks back to a car-conversation with Dad, who admits he handled his divorce badly and hurt Yeol. Dad tells him not to be in pain anymore because of him, nor close up his heart.
Yeol finds the engagement ring in the glovebox, with a note from Yeon-doo’s mom. In it, she says she respects his decision to put his son first. “And, I love you,” it finishes.
In the present, he asks his mom in the U.S. to be transferred to her family register, and is surprised to find they don’t have them (Yeol: “Then adopt me!”). Yeon-doo bounds up, wondering who he’s talking to all secretly — is he cheating on her?
Ha-joon throws his arms around both of them and tells Yeon-doo to come to him if Yeol’s cheating, and they all laugh.
The rest of the team crowd in, and Yeol cries, “Let’s go!” Arm in arm, they run forward.
COMMENTS
Ahhh. I feel content. For an ending, it’s exactly what I projected and everything I wanted. Go to regionals! Suck! Be happy!
I’ve noticed Yeol’s flashes of childishness seem to be rooted in insecurity, but discovering Ha-joon’s true reason for quitting the club burned off some of his immaturity. Initially, I found his angry reaction out of character, but Yeol’s proven to be a hot mess of insecurity where Yeon-doo is concerned. His subsequent return to frankness becomes (and often is) his saving grace. It’s a quality that lies at the heart of the boys’ friendship — that in a wolrd where they can trust no one, they’ll always be true to each other. It’s the same quality that defines Ha-joon’s relationship with Yeon-doo, and this, I think, is the reason why the easy, close friendship between the three survives — they will be ruthlessly, painfully honest with each other, and wholeheartedly trust in each other, too. That end moment, where Ha-joon jokes to Yeon-doo to come to him, warmed my heart so much, because it meant they were okay. No festering secret poisoning the three’s relationships with each other.
I was most moved by his gummy bear confession to Yeon-doo. There’s something so intensely childlike in that moment, that strips it of any romantic meaning. The way he uses the bears to tell his story, a poignant mirror of the way child abuse victims are encouraged to disclose during therapy, choked me up. He crafts his words to ask nothing from her — he doesn’t make her feel bad for not returning his feelings and I LOVE that. That he thanks her, choosing to cherish his capacity for those feelings, rather than their object, says everything you need to know about Seo Ha-joon and where his loyalties lie. To me, the best aspect of the boys’ friendship has always been their certainty in each other: For kids for whom so little in life is certain, self-sacrificing loyalty is everything.
This return to childhood also plays out in Ha-joon’s relationship with Yeol, and even with his father. With Yeol, it’s their safe-place, where they can return to the simplicity and unmarred devotion of their younger selves, and start again from there. But it’s the opposite with his father. Like Soo-ah, Ha-joon was trapped in an abuse spiral that he could only escape once the illusion of his father’s omnipotence was broken, in that crucial moment of parental betrayal. It’s particularly heartbreaking to watch marshmallow-giant Ha-joon cower, but it speaks of the power of social conditioning that makes resistance unthinkable. It also makes Dad’s end that much more satisfying, because in how many a drama do elders get a free pass when it comes to abusing kids? With a full heart, I love this drama for punishing the adults, and even making them inconsequential by serving them up inglorious ends (buh-bye Principal Choi!).
But although the battle lines between kids and adults were drawn from the outset, the show has been balanced overall — bad adults were offset by good, but above all, they were exposed as flawed and in need of correction. As Yeol’s dad says, growing older indeed does not make you grow up, but we still got adults to root for in Teacher Yang, Instructor Nam, and Yeon-doo’s mom, who exemplified sincerity and imperfection. Teacher Yang’s struggles were the most touching, with his one-man war against the system and his unfailing support of his kids. It was vital to the show that it kept the kids at the center of its narrative, and inasmuch as can be achieved in twelve episodes, our key characters were given full arcs. Dong-jae’s was less fully developed, but like many of you, I think it the wiser choice not to push N beyond his range.
At eighteen, our friends are neither quite children, nor quite adults, and this presents a set of challenges unique to their time of life. Sassy covers a lot of ground as the kids navigate the world, learning how to make friends, how to show loyalty, how to be moral and responsible, how to ask for help, and not to be ashamed to need each other. The fullness of its world is realized best and most in its small touches, like Yeon-doo borrowing Soo-ah’s jumper (“ugh as if”) after their reconciliation, or the way Yeol instinctively reaches for Yeon-doo in reassurance, or how Ha-joon and Yeol always find each other’s eyes first, even when the focus isn’t on them.
Watching Sassy reminds me of why I’ve always read YA, and what it is that makes a youth drama or book so stirring. It’s not just the intensity and the first times, but whether the story touches you remains dependent on the storyteller’s hand. Sassy respected its own story; it believed in its characters — their struggles and their conflicts, their loves and their woes — and it believed in the messages it was sending. It’s the kind of conviction that earns your trust as a viewer.
Did everything tie up neatly? Yes. Did it bother me? Not a jot. I am always going to be a sucker for the happy ending, but I’m an even bigger sucker for comeuppances (hence my unhealthy adoration for good revenge melos…). It’s a finish that brings emotional realism despite the limitations of its short run, and having to cram a lot of developments into the last few episodes. Their happiness feels earned, but measured. Their today is happy, but not because it’s perfect — their paths are still laced with uncertainties, and their victories still have to be fought for. But closing on the note it started on, we’re reminded that having friends beside you makes all the difference.

(NEWSFLASH, KBS: IT IS NOT ENOUGH!! IT CAN NEVER BE ENOUGH!)
But I did love how Yeol was constantly touching Yeon-doo. So cute!

It's not only Yeol though. During their conversation about life being hard at eighteen, Yeon Doo is holding on to Yeol's sweater the whole time, even though they're on opposite sides of the wall. It was super cute. Those little touches feel very natural, like how a real couple would touch each other, without making a big statement about it.

yeah, I loved that moment too - it wasn't romantic or even presented as a big deal, but it almost meant more that she was holding on to his sweater like she needed to touch him, to feel a little less crappy about the entire situation. And I did love how she leaned in so readily for a cuddle at their movie date ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

Thank you so much, Saya!
I loved this drama and I'm really sad that it only had 12 episodes. The writer had material for at least 16 but like that the show was fast-paced wich is good.
The characters were the best for me. The relationship and chemestry between KY and KYD, the bromance KYxSHJ, professor Yang and Instructor Nam, the sismance KYDxKSA and even the parents romance! I'm going to miss so much this drama and for me, Sassy Go Go and Healer were the best of 2015. :)

I love this show, I do. I think I actually sigh in content every time I think of it.
The ending actually makes sense in the real world. ("Surpriiiiise!!!" says K-drama gods) I cannot ask for more. (But I won't ever reject a season 2! (Even if the chance of that is 0.0000000000000.%.)

I imagine that 'Surpriiise!' coming out in the exact same tone as Instructor Nam when she brought the kids party supplies in episode 5 (and found them all drunk lol).

Best high school themed drama for 2015 for sure. It's more grounded and relevant than School 2015's twins concept or Angry Mom's gangster concept. Kids worrying about grades, love, friendships and the future is what it's all about. The romance was pretty straight forward which was quite refreshing. Sometimes, no guessing who ends up with who or guys battling it out for the heroine's affection can be so refreshing. I particularly like the fact that no one really ran away or went abroad. lol
I was a bit hesitant at first to see Eun Ji playing another high-schooler since I would never think she could be as awesome as she was when she played Sung Shi Won. Actually, the first few episodes I had to try really hard to not see her as Sung Shi Won (who would probably kill Soo Ah if she ever pulled that crap on her lol) but she managed to pull it off nicely. The same goes with Ji Soo. I rolled my eyes a bit when I saw that he's playing another physically abused high-schooler but he's so good at it that I didn't really mind after a while. Pleae don't make it three in a row thought Ji Soo. Do something completely different for your next role choice. lol
I can't really say much about Lee Won Keun except he was a great lead opposite Eun Ji. I looked up all the stuff he's been in and I haven't watched any of them except for Moon Embracing the Sun which I assume he only had a very minor role since it was his debut drama and I don't even remember him in it.
I thought Chae Soo Bin was awesome as Soo Ah. Almost as good as Jo Soo Hyang's Soo Young in School 2015 (that girl made me physically uncomfortable every time I saw her anywhere near Eun Bi lol ). Soo Ah's evilness stemmed from her misguided perception that people were out to get her so she had to strike first or retaliate at all cost. I thought I was going to dislike her story arc of getting accepted back into the fold but at the end of the day, she was worth saving.
N playing Dong Jae I felt was just okay. His character was a little short changed especially since it seemed like he was presented as one of the leads. I also think he needs a little more work on his acting. He needs to show more facial expression (a problem a lot of idol-actors and some rookie actors encounter) so it doesn't look like he is reciting his lines. Anyway, it was a decent effort.
Great show overall. The teen romance and Bromance was top notch.
Thanks for the recaps!!

@Aigoooo - you're spot-on that this is the best teen drama of 2015 - it's light years ahead of School 2015 and Orange Marmalade, and like you said, its premise is more grounded than Angry Mom.
It's actually the best school drama I've seen since School 2013, and in a way it's like a spiritual successor to School 2013, which treated friendship (in jb/gf's words) as a relationship to live and die by, every bit as much as romance (which there was none of). And Sassy Go Go treats friendship as the relationship that's most important to its characters, even in a romance - so in that sense, it took the logic one step further.

First off, thank you Saya and Lollypip for your recaps! They were amazing, because I was able to relive the episode and they were all well-written!
I really wished that they had sprinkled a bit more of Dong-jae's phobia and Hajoon's insecurity somewhere in the middle (maybe episode 8?) so that their payoffs are much more heartwarming. But damn the 12-episode limit.
The ending wasn't exactly very triumphant, because of how the writers had to squeeze everything, but still heartwarming nonetheless. Honestly I wished there were more interactions between Hajoon and Sooah; the scenes at Instructor Nam's house and the lake were so striking to me. Not that I ship them as a couple, but they have this connection that shouldn't be planted and ignored. But damn the 12-episode limit. Dammit.
On the bright side, I really love how their struggles are written, and how they overcome them in the end. There are so many themes that are very relatable to me, since I'm 18 as well. Discovering your heart in situations, choosing between your heart and mind, sometimes choosing the easier way out because you're an inexperienced human being, maturing as you face situation after situation and of course, finding friends that can do anything with you. I never saw being 18 as a time of growth, but watching this and looking back at the year, I really have gone through a lot. There are still unconcluded feelings, a lot to put behind and an uncertain road ahead of me, but watching the ending made me think, "It's okay. You've got friends, and with friends, you can make it through."
And when you talk about friendship, you cannot ignore the love between the Baek-King kids. All of them became attached to one another, but the show's focus is on the main 5 kids. Every friendship line had their struggles, but also had their harmony:
Yeol and Hajoon are basically inseparable, they depend on each other, and complete each other (they've replaced my School 2013 brotp). Their friendship is so important to them, it became part of their struggle. But I love how the show still highlights that friendship wins.
Hajoon and Yeondoo, the one-sided love that may never be cured until he meets another girl in college or in the workforce. But even though he experienced pain, he also experienced love, care, and built-up self-confidence. Sure he had a brother by his side, but Yeondoo opened up to him, and became a bridge between him and everyone else. He realizes that he is worth something, and his life isn't as bleak as he thought it was. That slowly builds-up to his resistance against his father in this last episode, and damn was it nice to see.
Yeondoo and SooAh. They both learned and grew from each other's words and actions. Yeondoo realizes that listening to only her heart won't do her any good (though it's partly Yeol's influence as well, since he's pretty calculative), and Sooah has gotten from listening to her mind to doing what her heart wants. The...

I love that this drama kept such a strong emphasis on friendship being the thing at the heart of every single relationship between its younger cast (and even between the good adults on the older cast, like Teachers Yang and Nam). Even when they were antagonistic, like Soo-ah, or when they acted out because they felt that friendship was in danger, like Yeol. Or in Yeol and Yeon-doo's case, where he specifically mentions her loyalty to her friends being one of the reasons why he likes her so much. I love that this drama wastes no opportunity to hammer it home just how important it is, and does it in a way that feels natural among all the characters.
And it's not just our main five who grow through the relationships they form over the course of this drama, it's everyone - the barriers between Baek-ho and Real King breaking lead to things like Jae-young and Na-yeon becoming loving sunbaes to Da-mi and Kyung-eun, Tae-pyung getting closer to Hyo-shik, and even Ha-joon in the end is closer to Hyo-shik and Seung-woo, considering he's putting them in headlocks. And I love that these are developments shown throughout the drama.
I do agree about Ha-joon and Soo-ah, it would have been interesting to see more interaction between them, because in a weird way they get each other. (now there's an idea for a fic)

And Tae-pyung's adorable little crush on Dami which she totally teases him for! I love how consistently they followed through tiny little sub-storylines. It made it feel so real. It wasn't like, 'oh look, triangle angst, nothing else matters anymore'.
I flail a bit everytime I think of everything I love about this show XD
Also also also: look at that second-to-last screencap in the comments, how tiny Dami stretches up to make her sign level with everyone else's -- great directing to make that visual even more striking. They made a perfect straight line, even though everyone held it a different angle. Love the attention to detail!

like how consistently they made Yeol as a dancing blackhole from start to end xDD
LWG played him so naturally i won't be surprised if the actor actually has two left feet and no sense of rhythm and the writer just wrote Yeol like that haha

HOW is this drama so good, HOW?! There have been so many of these little touches in scenes, that I can hardly believe this was actually achieved on the live shoot. The actors and PD deserve a standing ovation for making it all happen.

Yeah I wish there'd been a bit more focus on Dong-jae and Ha-joon during the middle so that the endings to their stories didn't feel quite as rushed, but unfortunately the 12 episode length didn't allow for that. :( It's a shame, because otherwise
"The ending wasn’t exactly very triumphant, because of how the writers had to squeeze everything, but still heartwarming nonetheless." I think the main flaw of SSG is the pacing - it definitely felt rushed in the last 2-3 episodes, so I didn't get the full effect of that triumph either, but otherwise, the ending was everything I wanted it to be in terms of emotional impact and realised character growth.
"Honestly I wished there were more interactions between Hajoon and Sooah" - YES. I was disappointed that they didn't get more moments together, because they were two people who understood each other on a very intrinsic level, even if they weren't friends, and there was something so compelling about their dynamic. Their scenes together during that cheerleading bonding session had a very different, interesting kind of chemistry that I would've liked to have seen more of. Even that tiny moment during their camping trip outside the tents - when Soo-ah tripped and Ha-joon steadied her - had a certain interesting kind of appeal. Not necessarily romantic, but definitely a potential friendship that could've been explored more.
But like you said, damn that 12 episode limit LOL. :(

Thanks to KBS for the series!

"He crafts his words to ask nothing from her — he doesn’t make her feel bad for not returning his feelings and I LOVE that. That he thanks her, choosing to cherish his capacity for those feelings, rather than their object, says everything you need to know about Seo Ha-joon and where his loyalties lie. To me, the best aspect of the boys’ friendship has always been their certainty in each other: For kids for whom so little in life is certain, self-sacrificing loyalty is everything."

I think Ha Joon's story was handled very well. Everything from his friendship with Yeol, his confession to Yeon Doo and his standing up to his dad, it was so realistic and complete.
Like everyone, I liked the confession with the gummy bears because it wasn't asking Yeon Doo for anything, but rather thanking her for helping him to be able to feel love and "get to know his heart better" as Yeon Doo previously mentioned. Like he told his father, Ha Joon never let anyone (except Yeol) in because he felt worthless, not deserving of love and hated himself. It's difficult to love someone else when you hate yourself. But, he finally realized that just because his father treated him like crap that didn't mean he was crap. He found friends who cared about him, was willing to go the distance with him, who would help and support him in need. He was finally able to try to love himself and learned to love someone else. Sure, the feelings are not returned. But for Ha Joon, as painful as that it it's ok because he learned to let someone in and to also love himself. And I think he recognized this growth and was able to sincerely thank Yeon Doo for it.
And once he escaped that fear and mind set that he was worthless, he was able to break away from his father's control and dominance. Like Yeol said, a "big guy like him why do you let yourself get hit." It's never an easy thing to stand up to your abuser. But I think there comes a point where all the years of anger and welled up courage spill out and you just stand up and defy. And he finally told his dad, I'm not your punching bag, I don't hate myself anymore just because I hate you. I'm not afraid of you anymore. That was great. That was so pivotal for him to do, and I'm sure knowing that he has friends and others who will support him helped him. I'm also glad he slapped his dad with a restraining order. Yeah, that's right, stay away you abusive assjerk.
I think out of all the school themed dramas, this drama was the most real in handling the difficulties of a high schooler/young adult. I felt like I could relate, and the characters were so likeable, and if not so much then at least sympathetic and understandable. It certainly didn't hurt that the main leads were super easy on the eyes and adorable! I'm just going to be sad bc I won't have any Sassy to watch next week.

I know, that's the incredible thing about Ha-joon's story - that he's able to go from this isolated, self-hating boy (except for Yeol, who pretty much breathes fire at anyone he perceives as even the slightest threat to Ha-joon) to a self-awareness and acceptance that finally gives him the strength to break the cycle of abuse.
I love that Yeol and Yeon-doo's friendship is what does it for him - even if Yeon-doo can't love him romantically, she'll still risk her neck to save him from his father, just the same way that Yeol sees Ha-joon as his best friend and brother, way ahead of a romantic rival. And that makes all the difference, knowing that his friends are with him no matter what, taboo feelings for Yeon-doo or no.

I feel Ha Joon's eyes are finally opened and he's able to see just what sort of person his dad really is. When he realized that His dad is just trying to cover up his own corruption, rather than think about Ha Joon's well being. Ha Joon finally gets it that it wasn't Ha Joon who's not worthy.
I love what he said to his dad in that scene by the street and I love it that he walked away straight without looking back. The acting is really good because when Ha Joon's with his dad, his body posture used to be a bit hunched like he's scared and bracing for an attack. Ji soo played Ha Joon really reallyy well, no overacting. This is why we love you Ji Soo!

@pogo omgyah just looking at your pics!
confession. immediately acquired gummy bears and did exactly the same. steadily eating through other colours to leave a little pile of red and green AND OH, THIS HAPPENED: I reached in for one, and came out with siamese triplets: stuck together side by side: red, yellow, green.
My life was complete.
(yellow is so obviously Yeol - even the letters are nearly the same! and OF COURSE he is yellow, like a BANANA)
Also, I realised, red = stop, green = go. So much meaning you can read into that. Ha-joon is the one stuck where he is (red), Yeon-doo is the one who gets him living again (green). Yeol is the one in the middle, the link between the two.
so perfect. flail.
pogo
November 15, 2015 at 8:52 AM
@fishfingers - I DIDN'T EVEN THINK OF THE YELLOW BEARS THAT WAY!!! And now I wish I hadn't eaten all my yellow bears (though I like the lime flavour - which is yellow in Haribos- best so it was the last colour left in the bag aside from red and green.....before I ate it to leave those). Yours is a pretty genius interpretation of it really.
I'd thought of them in terms of the obvious - red being for Ha-joon's emotional, impulsive nature and also for the rages he gets into because he's so badly hurt inside, and green for the gradual healing effect Yeon-doo has on him. But I love your stoplights interpretation more.
(and I admit to having a smile almost as giddy as Ha-joon with that umbrella, when I fished out a red and a green bear stuck to each other by their backs. This drama is officially making us lose our minds lol)

@fishfingers - Wahhh ~ That was seriously the wise interpretation about those gummy bears! I also never thought of the yellow that way either!
You are so right about the colors of these gummy bears represented as their characters.
Red = Ha Joon, who just stuck at where he was, and had no where out.
Green = Yeon Doo, who eventually gives him a new light in living again.
Yellow = Yeol, who eventually brought them together and made them knowing each other.
Then what about hat Strawberry and Banana Milks? hahah I wonder what those represent hahah

I just love KYD character, an actual useful heroine. And I love that she actually showed that she's attracted to Yeol and that their relationship progressed smoothly after the kiss. It's very rare to see drama where couple doesn't break up at least once for some stupid reasons. Their relationship was really healthy one. I wish we knew what happened to KYD father. Also, I still have to see drama where heroine is academically accomplished and not 999th in school (is there such drama) but KYD more than made it up with her other qualifies. This probably my third favorite drama now, after My love from another star and Reply 1997

Yeah, I scratch my head at times at what South Korea gagas over what is "pretty." Honestly, I have never though Yoona or Suzy to be that pretty. I mean, they look pretty enough, are nice and etc but they're not so crazy drop that pretty for the entire country to go gaga over them. They just seem a bit bland to me. Personally, I think a little character to the face is what makes a face really pretty. I think Eunji is very pretty. She definitely has that Julia Roberts huge smile which can make her look awkward in certain shots but mostly, that twinkle in her eyes, I think she's really very pretty.

@everyone - I agree with you guys about Eunji, totally.
@Grnapple31 - you know, I've noticed that Koreans tend to consider people with certain types of features good-looking, as opposed to Western countries, where although there is a beauty standard about facial features, it's not quite as extreme and there seems to be more acceptance of 'imperfect' faces as long as they are striking (like Gisele, say) and reflect character.
Maybe it's a generalisation, but this is what I've noticed. And frankly, I find the Yoona/Suzy etc types insipid and uninteresting compared to women like Gong Hyo-jin, Bae Doona, Jeon Ji-hyun or (among the younger generation) Go Ah-sung, Kim Ji-won and Kang Sora. Or, for that matter, Eunji herself. Eunji's facial features may not conform to the Korean standard of pretty, but there's a verve and intelligence in her eyes that automatically puts her a level above her prettier but blander contemporaries - like you said, character is what makes all the difference. Now I just hope her agency and people in charge of her career don't push her to surgically modify or botox her unique, lovely face into conforming with the standard - it's one of her great charms.
(I've noted this before, but when she smiles, she looks a lot like the model Daisy Lowe - and Daisy Lowe is absolutely gorgeous)

Many, many thanks for the recaps and insightful commentary from all. The writing, directing, acting, and production of this drama were all first rate. I tell others if you like how Eunji sings, then you should watch her act and vice versa. She matches her voice to the singer's she collaborates with, and she seems to generate intense chemistry with all her co-actors. I hope the low ratings of this drama don't interfere with her getting a new project soon. I wonder if the Netizens in SK are as positive about SGG as we all seem to be.

There are some Korean articles I've come across saying that if only SGG was aired during the break for students, it would have fared a bit better in ratings. October's the busiest time of the year for high school students, which hindered them from watching this show.
KBS really needs to fix their programming schedules. :( That, and they should've marketed Sassy more. It was also unlucky to be faced with strong competitors.
Anyway what's done is done, I'm just glad Sassy was so good from start to finish! It seems pretty popular overseas and even in SK, to some degree.

Oh yeah! The college entrance exams are early November! That makes sense.
You know, but I heard that the "hottest issues of the week" online have consistently been this show. So, even though the tv ratings were low it means people were talking about it every week so much that it beat out other shows, even variety shows like Running Man and Infinity Challenge to be the most talked out topic each week. This would tend to show that people watched the show.
Frankly, I feel like tv ratings are just not accurate. So many people, especially young folks/students who are the target audience for this show, download dramas and watch them on their computers. They don't necessarily sit down in front of the tv when it's airing to watch it. So it's hard to assume that tv ratings are an accurate depiction of a show's success nowadays.
Moreover, I read that this show ranked #1 in China as the most downloaded/watched show in China. This would seem to suggest that the online activity for this show was high. So, yeah, Koreans may not have really watched this show on tv but this show was undoubtedly popular underground or internationally.

Yeah, why trust ratings nowadays? It's obsolete and archaic.
The thing is, we could've gotten an extension if only the ratings were high enough. :( Ah well.
Hopefully the cast/crew are aware of the online buzz!

It's a bit astonishing when you consider that Sassy Go Go had no hype, no big-name writer or PD, no big-name cast members (only Eunji's status is somewhat recognisable, the others were rookies or near-total unknowns) or well-known child stars, wasn't an adaptation of any hit webtoon/foreign drama.....and still outdid productions that had all those things going for them but did not manage to be even a quarter as good as this.

oh, that's nice to hear! and it also seems to be pretty popular in china as well. i hope the cast knows about how much it's adored, even if the ratings were subpar. it's so frustrating to see a really popular show not have that popularity reflected in the ratings, because then the team doesn't get the recognition and success they deserve (...and the extension that we all hoped for haha). :(

I think they do know, or there have been some hints that they do. Eunji made a comment during an interview that tv ratings aren't indicative of a show's success. And Lee Won Geun thanked everyone in China, Thailand, Taiwan, Cambodia and one other country for watching the show. So that seems to show that the cast and crew have an idea. We can hoorah them like we did for Healer by commenting about the show more online!

...wow, so KBS rushed the production, did hardly any publicity for it (according to Korean viewers who commented here earlier), AND decided to air a high school drama when its target audience couldn't watch it?
No wonder - I remember two years ago, even Heirs had only middling ratings until about halfway through its run despite its superstar writer and big-name cast, but I never thought to connect that to Korean high school students being disinclined to watch stuff during their exam season.

I love the little touches that Yeol always gives Yeon-doo. And I love how matter of fact Ha joon's confession was--he was just telling her, not confessing to ask her what her answer was. I love the three's relationship, and I have utter faith that they'll continue to be like that in the future. I love that there is a burgeoning Soo ah x Dong jae, and true to form, it's the former who is acting while the latter has no idea. I love this show so much! But what I love the most is this lively community which just made the show, and the discussions after it, so much better. I love you, Sassy Go Go; I love you all, Sassy Go Go fans!!! :D :D <3 <3

yeah, I loved Yeol's confession for being so direct (after he tried and failed three times already, pffft) but I love Ha-joon's telling her about his feelings with the gummi bears because he just tells her, and he knows it can't be Yeol's kind of confession because he doesn't ask for a response from her.
I do wish Yeol and Yeon-doo had kissed once more, but I loved all the skinship they had anyway. I love that he's always holding her close, whenever he can. And she's so natural with it, no discomfort at all.

the 3 confessions were: 1. when it was raining and he sat outside with her after he brought the brolly and told her that she should use the umbrella alone coz if he were under it with her, he would get himself into trouble; 2. before they did their cheerleading routine and he gave her a hug in the corridor before Hyo sik came upon them and 3. after she was rescued after being left behind by Soo Ah at the campsite and he said he was tired of beating around and bush and he liked her and so what was her answer? I loved those confessions haha . and also the way YD sidestepped them each time!

And one more (practically a) confession scene, when he told her that the reason he stood up in front of the class and basically smacked down the girls' baseless accusations of sexual harassment against Teacher Yang was so that she wouldn't do it herself and get hurt, as he didn't want to see her get hurt. And then told her to think about it. <3 <3 <3

yeah, those were the three failed confessions - 1. 'if I'm under an umbrella with you, I'll be in trouble', 2. asking her to think about why he'd spoken up in class for teacher Yang, and 3. banana milk!
ALL of which went totally over her head until he bit the bullet and said the actual words 'I like you'. (I'd say that should count as a successful confession, since she registered it! And gave him her answer, even if it took a head injury to spur her response ;) )

November 16, 2015 at 5:04 PM
@pogo, I love the fact that the final, categorical confession was not him frustratedly blowing up at her, all 'I like you, I've told you a thousand times, realize that already!!' but just him saying 'I want you to know this once and for all, I like you.' I think that's a badge of how much he knows and understands her. I love the running theme of Yeol not being a typical hero by fighting her battles for her; instead he lets her when he knows she can handle it, and the one time he took over, it was for himself, because he could not stand seeing her hurt. If anything, it's Yeon-doo that I could see taking on other people's fights, but then in Yeol's case (i.e. the scene when he rescued Ha-joon), she just helps him. Indeed, as it has been repeatedly emphasized, they are both equals in their relationship. :D :D

November 16, 2015 at 6:39 PM
@rhia - you're right, Yeol's straightforwardness and respect for Yeon-doo during his final confession (no "do I like you?" nonsense either, he just tells her straight-up and actually waits for her answer!) are actually quite unique among kdrama first leads, ha.
I think what really helps is that despite the attraction, they actually became friends first, and they actually confide in each other so much that they refuse to be noble idiots. I love that about them <3

@pogo, That quality of his is so refreshing in drama leads, and yet so realistic! I love it so much :D I love the fact that he asked for her answer, too, and not just, forced a kiss on her and then hoped that she would understand that that meant that he liked her. <3 <3
And actually, I sort of died when he tilted his head before asking Yeon-doo about her answer. That sort of, I don't know, manly, subtle cuteness always gets me straight in the chest and turns me into a mushy puddle of mush.
(Haha--I can talk about this for weeks. Does it show, when I'm loathe to leave this thread????)

one of my favourite favourite bits this episode was when she clutches him from around the corner. It was so sweet and innocent and childlike (you know like a toddler trailing a blanket/teddybear behind him? all droopy and adorable?), and made you remember all over again how they're so great as supportive friends, and that's what makes them such a wonderful couple. And they taaaaalllllkkk. All the timeeeeee.
I wonder if every future drama is going to disappoint me now (but!!! Ri-hwan in Bubblegum reminds me a bit of Yeol! He's not a player of flirty with everyone, but he's such a sweetheart it's impossible for people not to adore him, AND he's so straightforward with Haeng-ah about liking her. And then trolling her about kisses, hahaha. Anyone else watching?)

(lol, sorry for rambling so much - I didn't realize we had an audience. (in retrospect, we always had an audience... whoops.))
I'm not sure what to say. Am I a little frustrated? Yes, although I think my frustrations are finally properly placed now that the dust has settled. Am I dissatisfied? A little. Am I still happy for all of my faves in this show? A resounding yes. I think that's the best note to leave on, here.
This was the happiest kind of fairy tale, I think - the kind where there are man eating goblins and witches who steal children to serve them eternally, but in the end all the children make it home safely because they were good and kind and looked out for each other. That's a lovely thing. I'm never going to argue a story like that because they are important and need to be told. I'm going to miss this scrappy cheerleading team a lot!
Also, let me just be really excited that there was a friendship between two childhood friends of differing genders that was loving and devoted and close, yet stayed completely platonic through the show. Seriously, I'm kicking my arms and legs here! That was one thing on my wish list that I really wanted and the show delivered. I can't help but be thrilled about that, seriously.
I probably won't come back to SGG because of a certain someone but I certainly won't feel bad suggesting it to a friend for a weekend pick-me-up. :D It was a ride and, looking back, that's all I had really wanted. I'm glad I got that.

I'm getting used to the embarrassment of having constant foot-in-mouth disorder, and I think that's the most valuable lesson I learned here - I can be embarrassed by my own opinions and mistakes and still live, lol. (The second most valuable lesson: never send the first draft. If possible, leave it until the sixth draft. Also keep it under 3000 characters, good arguments don't need that many words.)
Fans can be a scary, mule-headed bunch, myself included. I'm glad you didn't give up. I'm not quite sure if I had fun but this was a very valuable experience for me - I never get to think and discuss my thoughts about pulpy kdramas at length, so this entire experience was very cathartic. @saehee - I honestly don't think you have anything to be embarrassed about, I guess I was just dumb enough not to realise that the recappers themselves would see our comments!
And frankly, I enjoyed your posts - I made PLENTY of wrong predictions myself (insisting Ha-joon couldn't possibly fall for Yeon-doo, lol. And then insisting that he MUST have known and registered the true nature of Yeol's feelings for her.....all predictions that went flat on their faces when the relevant episodes came along). But I always appreciated how deeply you thought about the show, and in how much detail - and it was cool getting to talk to you. If all idol fans were like you, I'd think they were a pretty cool bunch.

LOL same! I suppose there's nothing wrong with it, though. I don't think I've said anything I'd strongly regret besides a couple of tinhat meltdowns. You were always reasonable and I tried my best to reciprocate haha
You covered a lot of ground (I stalked a few of your posts I confess lol) and I ended up hyperfocusing on the bits I liked the best. That part was fun, I'll admit, but breadth wasn't my focus and I was worried about being obnoxious when there was so much more to talk about. So really, I'm glad that someone was getting something out of my posts besides me :D
I find Hakyeon delightful and sweet to probably an unhealthy degree (i would probably go to war for him without a second thought lol) but I don't think that's destroyed my objectivity. I just have a better grasp on and acceptance of my own subjectivity... lol. As a fan, I think being a fan of your fave while still being fully conscious of their flaws is a skill that comes with time, and I feel that most vocal idol fans haven't learned this quite yet. In the meantime, the general knee-jerk reaction to criticism towards someone you like a LOT is a lot of aggression, and most of the time defending their honor or whatever is unwarranted. I don't think I'm a special case... I'm still completely obsessed. I've just chilled out over time and sorted out my priorities, lol. I believe other idol fans have the capacity to do the same! (in much the same way that I believe Hakyeon just hasn't been given a fitting role yet lol so take that with a grain of salt)
Oh, and just so I'm not throwing my fellow Hakyeon fans under a bus - VIXX's fandom tends to be pretty level-headed, though? Comparatively, anyway. There are horror stories about other idol fans, lots of them, but I don't think I've ever heard any about a fan of VIXX. (If I ever have to take this back I will be more sad than surprised.)
Man, you know what? In all of this talking I never got to talk about my favorite weird detail about this show - those slogan shirts that everyone wore at pivotal moments! I'd buy a hundred of them if only for the sentimental value, hahaha. I love when shows go for fine details like that, it makes me wish all shows put that much thought into filling out the edges of the production with purpose. It makes me happy. It was very nice to discuss these kinds of things with other people who also thought those things were cool, lol :D

@Nyke - oh man, the love triangle. Which I was SO sure wouldn't really go there, and thought I didn't even want. (and which I was wrong about, on both counts!)
I remember @Miranda and @Zoe, among others, having some really great commentary about the love triangle when we first started getting hints of it, and how it wasn't necessarily romantic love that spurred Ha-joon to leave that umbrella. And they were right about a lot - but I think a lot of us anti-love triangle did take it as a given that Ha-joon knew how Yeol felt about Yeon-doo, and we were mistaken. But I did think it led to some great discussions about the nature of friendship, and the nature of this new friendship in particular, which I absolutely loved.

@fishfingers - yeah, I missed them too! I think they made great points about how the Ha-joon/Yeon-doo situation was playing out, specifically in terms of how he seemed to be thinking of her at the time (not romantic but readjusting his thinking of her.....the only part anyone was mistaken about was the assumption that Ha-joon knew how Yeol felt/that it went beyond flirting, and thinking that knowledge would prevent a love triangle). I did love what they had to say about a Ha-joon/Yeon-doo friendship opening Ha-joon's eyes to a whole other kind of friendship besides Yeol, too, and how the two were different.
And I have to admit, I love that Yeon-doo by the end is comfortable enough to ask Ha-joon for relationship advice. I do think she goes to him with it because he's Yeol's friend and might offer her more of an insight into Yeol's thinking than, say, Hyo-shik (I imagine Dong-jae would be pretty useless as a confidante in these situations), but the fact that she feels comfortable enough to bring it up at all is pretty awesome.

School dramas are not my cup of tea - I love rom-com, comedy, and actions, but this was a breath of fresh air. I am so sad that the viewers in Korea did not love this drama. This is the first time I had teary eyes while reading the comments. At last, SSG get the proper hype <3 I hope I can give direct support to its casts, to show how much love from international viewers that they get. You get 30% rating in my heart, show!
I planned to skip this drama at first, because I usually feel cringe when watching high school drama. Thankfully, LWG's eye smile save me from doing the one of the most regretful thing that could be done.
I don't know what to say anymore because you guys have explained all the good things from this drama in an eloquent ways. It is delicious and painful in the right way; set an extremely high bar for next high school drama (at least in my eyes).
OKAY let's talk several OTPs in this drama (I hope you don't mind with my senseless explanation about each couple. I just said anything on top of my mind hihi.)
KY & YD :MOST ENVIABLE COUPLE! I just hope that I can be a "YD" for my "KY" in my real life. Period. (How cheesy of me :"))
DJ & SA : Underrated couple in this drama somehow. They have been crossing path since 1st episode, but we can only get a glimpse of the start of their blooming relationship at 12th episode . HOW SAD :(
KY & HJ : The romantic bromance, It is the first time I can see "pink" vibe from guy couple. Like they have their own romance. HAHA.
YD & HJ : One of the most emotional OTP in this drama. No wonder, because Heart (YD) and Heart (HJ) become one. Anything simple from both of them become a lot more complicated in my eyes.
YD's Mom & KY's Dad : The mature-yet childish-couple. I want to have this kind of relationship at their age. Even KY feels it's such a waste to end this couple (he try to make his mother "adopt" him, so his father can have a relationship as sweet as banana milk. HOW SWEET!)
DM & TP :The child couple. When the talk of marriage become so easy and innocent for them (maybe anything become simpler with the effect of alcohol :p)
Nam Teacher & Yang Teacher: The crazy, fun but heartfelt couple. Soju can be a great catalyst for both of them. I hope they can have their secret date after cheerleader practices.
Baek Ho & Real King : A long lasting couple. I hope each member can find his/her couple within OTP13. (Why the number of boys doesn't equal with the number of girls :"(). Then they can have huge reunion with their own children <3<3
I LOVE YOU SSG! From the start, until indefinite future <3 Last but not least, thank you Lollypip and Saya who create every recaps with so much care and love <3

As much as I love OTP moments, YeolJoon moments are as much precious. Forever squealing and repeating that stage scene "You can keep me close and hug me" OMG BOYS! ♥ I wish that scene was like 10 mins longer just so we could see them snuggling xDDD
Before this show maybe noone would've thought that having a great romance plus bromance wrapped in a 12 episodes drama was possible but Sassy Go Go made the impossible possible and we still got so much more than that.
I hate that there's no more YeolDooJoon on my screen every Tuesday & Wednesday night T^T

I think we overlook it a little sometimes, but YeolJoon aren't just an adorable bromance – they are the bedrock of this show. Yeol's fierce and unswerving devotion to Ha-joon and his need to protect him, is the entire reason Yeol broke with his usual trust-no-outsiders stand and confided in Yeon-doo just why he needed the cheerleading club to happen. And that was what brought Yeon-doo into their orbit in the first place.
Basically, YeolJoon is the reason why we even got YeolDoo OR Ha-joon/Yeon-doo in the first place. It's kind of staggering, when you think about it.

You're right. But just because it's rarely mentioned doesn't mean that we overlook it. Deep down we always know that YeolJoon is like the biggest core of this show. And I can never forget Ha-joon's line "That's why I'm trying my hardest to survive. It's all because of you" that's just about as big of a devotion to Yeol for me. And that makes YeolJoon head-to-head against HeungSoon from School 2013 (in my heart LOL)
Side note : Now that I'm thinking about it, YeolJoon could've been HeungSoon 2.0 when Ha-joon heard the reason why Yeol joined cheerleader or when Ha-joon decided to quit cheerleading but Yeol's nature to not let a problem left unsolved between them without talking about it and Ha-joon's blind love (?) towards Yeol plus their unbreakable trust to each other have protected them from potential misunderstandings that could've break their friendship otherwise. Sorry for the comparation though, I know that in School 2013 their problem has already happened and it's about confronting that past and mending their friendship, I'm just saying the things that's in my mind right now xD

There was a lot of pain between Nam-soon and Heung-soo that made their friendship as jagged and torturous as it was deep. What I love about Yeol-Joon is that between the two of them, they refused to allow anything like a misunderstanding to occur, and it wasn't that it just accidentally ended up that way, but they consciously make their relationship one where there's never any mistrust. The thing with YD was their biggest challenge, but even then, they put their friendship first, not their conflict.
Everything is making me sigh in wistfulness that this show is over. But it's so, so rich that you can watch it again and again!

Agree with everything you said. And yes, of course, I will rewatch the show over and over again to catch the little details that I've missed; for example I totally didn't catch when Yeon-doo borrowed Soo-ah's jumper (psssh, don't tell anyone!) haha fyi I watch dramas on phone so it's easier to miss things.

Sorry for the late reply, guys! Damn nap that turned into a 12 hour sleep....
You're right, we know it deep down but it still staggers me, just what they are to each other. It's extra poignant because Yeol and Ha-joon without each other could so easily have been just pure self-destructive rage monster (Ha-joon) or smirking first-place robot brat (Yeol).
And you're also right that it's an equal relationship (I didn't mean to suggest otherwise) - Yeol may be the one who's usually in the position of Ha-joon's protector and has basically taken it as his mission statement in school, but Ha-joon also takes every opportunity he can to reciprocate - like going after the CCTVs in episode 7 to clear Yeol's name, he got into that office without knowing Yeon-doo was also on its tail. (and I'd wager at least part of the reason behind his falling midterm grades was how upset he was over Yeol/was working overtime to clear him)
I was terrified of what the love triangle would do to them, but it ended up illustrating the strength of their bond even more perfectly (and happily, also did it in a way that didn't disregard Yeon-doo in the equation). Ha-joon hid his feelings for Yeol's sake, and Yeol wanted to spare Ha-joon the pain of knowing he'd witnessed the backhug - it may not have been the best long-term strategy, and misunderstandings forced Yeol's hand to get it out in the open, but I love how that actually made them work past it, process it, and come out stronger than ever in the end.
I love the HeungSoon 2.0 analogy too - the circumstances are of course different, but so many of the ingredients are similar - repressed feelings of unhappiness over something that made their bro really happy, an inadvertent loss of control over those feelings, and eventually, reconciliation (though in YeolJoon's case they never actually let go of each other in the first place). It's so interesting to compare these two very different sets of boys with the epic love for each other. And I love that as I'm typing this, the header is of HeungSoon with their ramyun.

@pogo, Go Go!
You know, coming to think about it, if YeolJoon is the biggest core in this story, then Yeon Doo is like their opening core to the story. The biggest plot of this drama is the involvement between these three throughout the whole story haha It was a very good idea of Yeol breaking with his usual trust-no-outsiders and opened up to Yeon Doo, whose loyalty and friendship are also the most important thing to her. The start of this story begins with SA bringing the first encounter between the two leaders of both clubs to meet each other, that was what brought Yeol being curious with Yeon Doo in the first place.

yeah, Soo-ah is the one who sets off the chain reaction that leads to Real King's disbandment (though her actual target was Yeol).
But it might have ended there, because Yeol and Yeon-doo wanted nothing to do with the cheerleading once they found out she was behind it. The plan would have been a no-go if Soo-ah hadn't found that bloody towel and used the knowledge of Ha-joon's self-harm to get Principal Choi to blackmail Yeol - and Yeol didn't give a hoot about Real King's disbandment (and as shown at the hospital, refused to trust Yeon-doo at first), but the threat to Ha-joon? That changed everything for Yeol.
And it also took Yeol a while to figure out that if he wanted Yeon-doo on side, the best thing to do was be honest with her, because she wasn't going to be won over by any of his attempts to obfuscate the truth by flirting. That sets the tone of their relationship too, because he may have wanted to hide the truth to protect Ha-joon's secret, but seeing Yeon-doo's nature towards her own friends probably made him realise she'd be more readily on side if she knew his friend was the one at risk.

That's right. It took him a while to figure that Yeon Doo's nature, aside of loyalty and friendship, honesty is another thing that she needs because if he just convince her through flirting nature of his will never win from her straightforward nature. No matter how they got close to each other in whatever way, I wondered if something dangerous happens to Yeon Doo, how would Yeol react, but watching his reactions from episode 8 and 9, I gradually understands how he would react and how he would feel. Those episodes were the first time I've seen him being that much emotional for someone, besides Ha Joon, he was totally going crazy and almost out of control that his mind was sort of out of his system haha
Episode 5-7 showed his registration of worrying and feeling frustrated about her, but still thinking twice of taking actions for her, until Ha Joon being first to take actions for Yeon Doo.
It really took him a long time to put trust in others, other than Ha Joon. However, thinking back, Yeon Doo and Yeol has always been honest and straightforward to each other, despite his flirting. However, his flirting does not come from his cynical, he has always been open to her through that, but to her, she probably took his flirts as not serious haha I wouldn't say she's clueless because through the series, it does shows that she's registered it from him a bit, but what she's not clear about him being serious to her was him giving her hints indirectly, what she needs is someone to be honest and being straightforward to her so it can be 100% clear for her. However, when Ha Joon indirectly confessed to her, she immediately understands right away haha
However, I also see that Yeon Doo is also someone who doesn't completely opens up herself to someone or confides on someone, unless that someone is personally close to her, for example, like Dong Jae, her childhood friend. Even though she's not as isolated or closed like Yeol, but there's also reasons why she's always being seen as always someone who's happy and energetic all the time. She cures her own loss in a positive way, which was to enjoy her everyday life doing things she likes, to be passionate and follows her heart. But through her loss, not only Yeol and Ha Joon who kept their loss to themselves, Yeon Doo also kept it to herself, except she's not as closed and isolated like them. Well, yeah, I know she doesn't want others to be worried and concerned about her, but yeah... you understand what I mean, right? hahah
Anyways, can I be out of topic a bit? Umm... do you know any dramas that have female leads as someone being mysterious, or have the same personality like Kim Yeol? Because I want to see the dark sides from the female lead too, not just the male lead. I want a high school or college dramas, not business dramas.

So true! And HeungSoon got all 16 episodes dedicated for their 'love story' (well, minus the first 3 eps when Heung-soo wasn't around). Here, Ha-joon had to share Yeol with Yeon-doo in 12 episodes but we still feel the love all the same.

I don't really see Dong-jae and Soo-ah as an emerging romance, tbh! I think they're on the way to becoming really good friends, and Soo-ah NEEDS another friend, far more than a boyfriend. Also, the fact that she's now the sharer of strawberry milk seems to me potentially symbolic as her taking a Yeon-doo like position in relation to him. Friends. Really really good, healing friends.
I don't have anything against it, though :D

I like how that last scene between them was handled - there's enough ambiguity in it (though mainly projected through Yeon-doo's narration) that it COULD be romantic through Soo-ah's end, but really, Soo-ah's not doing anything that Yeon-doo didn't do, and what it genuinely looks like is that she and Dong-jae are friends. And I liked what you said about the symbolism of the strawberry milk. Girl needs friends more than anything else, right now.

I am! Haha-- I do agree that she needs friends first before romance, but I can see that Dong jae is already special to her, as compared to the others. I can see them in the future though, far, far into the future. They can play out the slowest slow burn in all of history, but I do believe that there is a chance, given that Soo ah is a blunt go getter. It would be difficult and frustrating, because Dong jae, but I think there's a chance!

I cried and laughed and cried and laughed again throughout this entire last episode. This is a perfect example of a high school drama done right - everything from the cast to the OST down to the story was perfectly executed, successfully embodying every reason for why I love high school-centred stories so much. I was so excited about SSG when the news about it first came out - Eun-ji and Ji-soo in a high school romance drama?? COMPLETELY up my alley. But I never expected it to answer my wishes so perfectly: to have such a heart-stopping, adorable main couple, such a fiercely loyal bromance, and such a wonderful ensemble of quirky secondary characters that supported the four amazing leads in the best of ways. And most importantly, to have such a fulfilling, heartwarming journey of growth and self-discovery.
A well-written, well-acted high school drama will unfailingly capture my heart, because there's something so heartachingly beautiful about seeing the characters fall down, hurt and make mistakes, and then to see them pick themselves up, brush themselves off, and start again. To be reminded of that universal time in everyone's lives, when we were so painfully lost, and yet so wonderfully hopeful. To watch the characters grow and learn and grow some more, and to see them fight for the friendships that mean the world to them, and pull themselves through hardships that had been so insurmountable to them at first, and stumble through a first love that never seems silly in its earnestness. Because that's the magic of youth, and throughout its run, Sassy Go Go has never allowed us to forget it.

Here is an article on actor Lee Won Geun (who portrayed Kim Yeol) from Soompi's website:

Ooh it's interesting that the director wanted him to be colder and more conceited. I'm glad he decided to stick with his portrayal though, it was ten times more charming. <3

That's so interesting to know.... so we basically have Lee Won-geun himself to thank for shaping Yeol into the adorable crinkly teasing flirt he was?
They absolutely could not have picked a better leading man for this. And for a character like Yeol, whose appeal is that he is SO different from standard kdrama leads with the same external characteristics (#1, bad relationship with a parent, trauma in his past), to know that he could have gone a very different way in the hands of another actor......I kind of want to bow in gratitude to Lee Won-geun right now. And to the PD, for listening to him and not insisting on Yeol being Standard Kdrama Cold Asshole #3267638291.

+1! I wanna hug him in gratitude.
At first, he did look kinda cold and conceited during the Real King and BaekHo faceoff, but then it was such a pleasant surprise when he started being flirty and all that eyesmiling goodness!

I know, he turned on the eye-smile and trolling (which is totally different from cold and conceited) in what, his second scene with her? Which was the one leading to the infamous not-kiss that got Real King banned :)

But then, come to think of it, even his very first scene in the Baek-ho room, he gave off more troll vibes than cold and conceited. I mean, the look on his face here....

I loooove that he had such a sense of fun for his role - he must've taken one look at Eunji and thought, no way. Not cold. She's so full of energy and sparkling intelligence that the very best thing that happened to her as a char was Yeol's char - the easy, flirty, couldn't-care-less guy (that's the personality that makes you believe in his love for Ha-joon, too) who has a verry serious core. Cold, conceited heroes are ten a penny in dramaland. Yeol almost singlehandedly is the character who elevates this from a standard bored romcom into something that much more memorable.
(because if Yeol had been c/c, the whole energy of the show would have changed. Like you guys said, we'd all have died of Ji-soo-syndrome, and we'd've spent the whole show mad at Yeon-doo for not picking the better guy. Thus: Yeol changes everything.)

@fishfingers - I think you may actually be right about LWG shaping his character around Eunji. I've noticed that Eunji generally has fabulous chemistry with people she's supposed to have romantic chemistry with, but the lone case in which she didn't, was with Ji Hyun-woo in Trot Lovers - which was also the only case where she was playing opposite an asshole hero. And I love both her and JHW, but they just don't mesh as actors, and I think trying to do the asshole hero thing highlighted that even more. I mean, she had major sparks flying with Shin Sung-rok, who was basically Second Lead Syndrome on legs, and his character was a proto-Yeol in terms of flirting.
And I absolutely agree that Yeol's atypical nature as a hero is a huge part of what elevates both the drama and the romance. Like people said on earlier recaps, if this was an ordinary kdrama, Yeol was a more likely second lead while Ha-joon has all the hallmarks of first lead all over him. And if we'd kept Ha-joon as he was in the show while also making Yeol c/c, that would be all kinds of overlapping and redundant. I mean, I'm sure Lee Won-geun would probably do it and maybe their chemistry would be strong enough to carry it, but we'd lose what makes the Yeol we know so delightful.

Which is a shame about Trot Lovers that they had to make Ji Hyun-woo an asshole when he's been the pinnacle of kind heroes before--who could ever forget his role in Queen In Hyun's Man, when he was the antithesis of an asshole? I totally fell for him there.

Thank you for the recap!
I loved the gummy-bears confession too, I especially loved how he thanked her for caring for him and teaching him how to love. Don't get a lot of guys like now, do we? :P
I'm gonna miss Cheer Up. Such a well-written and executed story, and the acting by our 4 leads was top-notch.
I'm going to follow Chae Soo Bin, Lee Won Geun, Jung Eun Ji and Ji Sooo wherever they go now. 'I hope these guys go a long way in the acting field.
I was aware of Ji Soo, because he did a supporting role in Angry Mom (and left a great impression!) and Chae Soo Bin who I watched a little bit of in Bluebird House (thanks to Lee Sang Yeob) but both of them really surprised me here.
Now time to watch Reply 1997 and something with Won Geun to get over the two lovebirds lol.

I agree. My go to drama to reccomend to people I wanted to hook on Kdramas was Boys Over Flowers ( I knooww, but it totally works!) but from now on I'm going to recommend Sassy Go Go. In my opinion, it'll make for an excellent gateway drug: you get most of the usual Kdrama clichés, but with a twist to them, which makes it the better choice.

I know, that's what makes this drama the rightful successor of School 2013 - they're both stories told with SO much heart.
This is easily in my top 3 of high school dramas ever. (the other two being School 2013 and Shut Up Flower Boy Band)

I think this might actually be my favorite. I love Shut Up Flower Boy Band, and I think in most ways it's better than this one, but that SUFBB was all about the boys. Not that I mind, but I love me some good female characters, and Soo-ah and Yeon-doo both are pillars for this show. I read a comment saying that the male leads overshadowed Yeon-doo, but I never felt that way. Both girls held their own fantastically against the boys, who had an amazing bromance while they had to play a more antagonistic angle that was nevertheless great to watch.
Besides, I'm a sucker for romance, and SUFBB's couple doesn't hold a candle to Sassy Go Go's.
(Yes, I know Shut Up Flower Boy Band's focus wasn't really on the romance, but you get what I mean).

November 15, 2015 at 7:01 PM
yeah, SUFBB had pretty well-written/nuanced female characters even if their screentime was low, but Sassy Go Go's girls are much more central to the story.
(and I love how Yeon-doo and Soo-ah's fight was never about romance at all, they did not even hint at anything suggesting that - even School 2013 did drop a small hint here and there about that, but Sassy didn't even go there)

ohh no, SUFBB has such a special place in my heart that I refuse to compare the two - it's like saying you love one of your babies more than the other! Nooooo. I love them equally but differently. And in tonal terms, they're practically opposite - sufbb was just so raw, and it had that darker, rougher-about-the-edges visual.
I love that just about everything about Sassy was bright, that the kids were essentially normal - nobody was dirt-poor, nobody was an all-powerful chaebol (hello Heirs, which btw, against popular opinion, I really enjoyed!). It was a more upper-class world, but it wasn't Jeguk High, and the kids didn't play at being adults. The struggles were real - mundane or extraordinary, they were always, always relatable. I still am not over how great SGG's small moments are. The punishment Yeol took with Yeon-doo, flattening the milk cartons? Such a fantastic little scene that hit on multiple levels at the same time. So good.
then I get punched in the face by the fact that there is no more of this
;____;
Can we make a sub-thread (way out in page 3 now!) bookmarking our favourite scenes so we can find them easily when we want to rewatch them? @pogo, you want to start this?

fishfingers_fb, go go!
November 16, 2015 at 6:40 AM
also, I think SGG showed us you can have romance at the same time as your bromance - sufbb chose its bromance over its romance (Su-ah never became part of their group, she was only close to Ji-hyuk), but SGG told us you didn't have to choose. HAVE CAKE. EAT IT.
Live on forever in our hearts.
pogo
November 16, 2015 at 8:56 AM
@fishfingers_fb - I agree, I can't possibly choose between SUFBB, School 2013 and Sassy Go Go! They're all great dramas, and their greatness comes from how they put friendship so firmly at the heart of the story.
But they approach it in different ways, according to the characters in the story, and like you said, where Sassy really shines is that it reiterated at every turn that you can have both romance AND bromance, and that it's certainly possible to honour the importance of those friendships even when the (imagined) worst happens and two bros fall for the same girl. We absolutely got to have our cake and eat it too! And it will certainly live forever in our hearts, this little drama that could.
For what it's worth, I did like that SUFBB's Su-ah refused to take crap from anyone and even took the initiative to tell the boy she liked, that she wanted to be with him! For a seemingly vanilla character, that's pretty gutsy - and while I found her initial alienation by the band believable, I did like that she was starting to bond a little with Woo-kyung (who used to have a crush on Ji-hyuk) by the end.
oh, and I'm totally on board with the idea of a thread bookmarking favourite scenes from SGG. (though the real danger is that I might end up filing every scene in which Yeol, Yeon-doo, Ha-joon or even the other kids appear, lol)

The Finale nailed every thing! Loveeeee it so much,,,guess this is the best school drama ever! :),, too bad that they only earned low rating in Korea,,yet they have successfully won the International fans' heart,,,
Though I may admit that Lee Won Geun has successfully stolen my heart through this drama, yet the chemistry between him and Eunji is the ultimate one that win this drama over the others and of course with the amazing plot.
I totally wanna give an approval that Jung Eunji is the best Actress-Dol of all. I like how she can really act natural. My point is her expression when Ha joon finally found her at the camping episode. She really can pull off such a relieve expression and such a natural sad-worry-afraid-almost cry expression. really look forward to watching her next drama ;),,,lastly I do hope there will be offscreen chemistry too between LWG and JEJ in real life. Our two chipmunks lover is such a cutiee ^^

I'm actually dreading the day (probably tomorrow) that the Sassy Go Go thumbnail goes into 'Recently Completed', that is how much I'm not over it.
And I badly, BADLY want Lee Won-geun and Ji-soo to break out the way Lee Jong-seok and Kim Woo-bin did after School 2013, only maybe with less typecasting.
(I also want Eunji and Chae Soo-bin to have a massive, career-making hit acting project after this - or another one, in Eunji's case. This cast deserves to be recognised for its talent)

It seems to me they're delaying it for as long as they can...She Was Pretty's thumbnail was moved practically the day after it was over, and yet Sassy's still in place.
I don't want to move on... I wonder if Javabeans and Girlfriday will record a podcast soon? I know I'm being really greedy but I'd love to hear them talk about Sassy in a podcast, maybe that will help the syntoms.
I just know I'm gonna feel really sad tomorrow when Oh My Venus starts and no more Sassy Go Go episodes come out.
This is a new thing for me. I just recently started watching stuff as it comes out and I've never liked a drama I watched airing as much as I loved this one. It's going to be hard...

oh ha joonie!!! how could you get any sweeter and adorable! of all the characters, HJ's was the most heartbreaking. the final ep was definitely HJ's time, as the focus shifted from the OTP. love the detailed recap and all the good feels from the comments in this thread. one thing I am certain of - this is one of my top dramas for 2015 and certainly one of the best high school dramas around in K dramaland! Loved the balance of light and heavy, the even pacing, well developed characters (except for N - but agree that it was a wise choice due to his erm acting range) and overall mood of youthful innocence, spit fire energy and young love. however, the adults were unfairly treated as malicious evil doers and veered too far to the cynical side. still - loved every ep of this drama.

the strongest relationship was that between KY and HJ. certainly rare to see such raw honesty between brothers in K dramaland. altho I agree that k dramas are excellent at budding bromances. when Ky asked HJ in the empty auditorium "I feel like crap! so how can you be feeling ok? " - it made me almost jealous of their closeness ! their friendship is so close yet never obsessive. KY grows up overnight as he struggles with his conflicting feelings for HJ and YD. yet he admits frankly that HJ is right - he cannot stop with YD... but he can't imagine losing HJ either. thank you k drama gods - noble idiocy should never make an appearance in k dramas again - unless the OTP are blood siblings! and well, that would make it a melodrama i suppose. And for all of HJ's reticence all the way to ep 11, his lines in ep 12 were more than all his lines put together from eps 1 to 11, he actually shows more maturity than KY but retorting" and so what if i told you that i liked YD, would it change anything? can you stop (liking her)? " altho i do get KY's point that what he was upset was HJ suffering in silence and not telling him about his liking for YD. yeah.... actually i am trying to get the comments up to 500.... :P but i really really like this drama - sob!
