MBC adapts contract marriage webtoon Cat and Dog

This new drama sounds a little bit crazy but also kinda cute. MBC is planning a new romance drama based on the webtoon Cat and Dog by artist-writer Park Hee-jung, about a 19-year-old girl and a celebrity who enter into an arranged marriage because of their families. It’s basically Sweet 18 and My Little Bride, right? The drama version will be called Mermaid’s Prince, and set in Busan (the city of Busan actually became an investor in the drama to make this happen).

The webtoon is about a 19-year-old high school student who’s raised in a very traditional household, as if she’s still stuck in the Joseon era. Her grandfather has already arranged her marriage since childhood, and she’s given pictures of her future husband to look forward to as she grows up. (That’s messed up, Grandpa.)

The hero is a minor celebrity who’s famous for publicly dating a star, and he gets dragged into the arranged marriage by Grandpa against his will. She’s described as a naive girl with dog-like devotion, while he’s a cat-like character who hides his emotions from the world. The drama will be about them navigating this bizarre relationship, and of course finding love along the way.

The setup for contract marriage dramas always require a massive suspension of disbelief to get going, but they have some classic rom-com elements that are always fun — cohabitation hijinks and faux romance leading to real romance. Hopefully it’ll cast a pair with some chemistry to make us want to suspend our disbelief. Directing is PD Noh Do-chul of Soulmate and Hello Franceska, and writing is Go Yoon-hee of Greatest Marriage.

Mermaid’s Prince is being planned for a Wednesday-Thursday timeslot sometime in 2016.

I forgot about Park Bo Gum. He would be amazing. He'll match the age of whoever the heroine is. And his fake hate is perfect.

If Choi Siwon was not off to military service, he would have been puuurfect for this.
"Oh my lady" anyone? He was adorable in it and his acting has improved loads.

Choi Siwon with Jo Boa or Jung So Min

2nd choice male lead: Song Jae Rim: that man can have chemistry with a tree!

Jo Boa and Rim were wasted in Surplus Princess, but their chemistry was undeniable and this drama will be perfect for them.

Song Jae Rim and Jung So Min will also be explosive. I love her!

YOO SEUNG HO VS KIM SO HYUN AS THE TWO LEADS, PLEASE!!! To be honest, I do want to pair up him with Yoon Eun Hye, but she doesn't look like "18 year old naïve girl" anymore, so I took Kim So Hyun instead b/c she looks like "young Yoon Eun Hye" to me.

Her acting is extremely good, especially in Missing You. She didn't share a scene with YSH in that drama but met him at the filming location. I still remember how he teased her at that time. They look so cute together.

I think we can rule out the possibility of actors such as Ji Chang Wook (87'), Kim Soo Hyun (88'), Lee Jong Suk (89'), Lee Jun Ki (82'), Jin Hi Yan (78'), Lee Min Ho (87') etc... They are seasoned actors and some are definitely too old for the role. I still remember vividly how ridiculous it was to see Lee Min Ho in a high school uniform in "Heirs":/ Nooo, for credibility's sake, they should pick a rising star born in the 90s'... same for the actress...

Oooh I'm really interested in this one. I just read the free available chapters so far of the webtoon and though I can smell some cliches here and there (but what do you expect right?), it was an interesting read for a start. If there's a good cast, I'll be in for the ride!

When I read this, the actress that come to my mind is JUNG SO MIN! Yaaas Jung Ddol Mi! haha :D her satoori is pretty good !! If Jung So Min is the female lead, I'll watch this drama for sure!

just read it with my limited korean lol. either i got a lot better or the story is really easy to follow because I pretty much understood all of it. It was okay, there were good feels because it's a peaceful kind of falling in love, the lead guy is a lot nicer than the ones in Goong or even Sweet 18 I think. I'm guessing they'll be playing up the conflicts and adding a bit more plot for the drama... It was a bit empty. I actually thought of Jisoo for the lead, but he's a bit too young... he looks young too. the main character is 25 I think.

Omg, love contract (with co-habit) and crossdressing are my most favourite themes in kdramas. They will never get old!!

But I doubt Eun Ji would do a drama anytime soon. She filmed Sassy Go Go at the same time as her Apink concerts in Japan and Jeju. She must be exhausted, looked so tired in the last couple of episodes. :/

Back to topic, hmm, plot seen and done. Lead characters sound really typical tbh. Personally after yrs i've become allergic to innocent naive female lead who'd fall for the cold male lead and vice versa, just because. Maybe this with a young and new face cast will make it somehow refreshing? idk

PS: this is the bias in me speaking, but when i read Busan, i screamed Eunji! lol another drama with her dialect would be awesome lol and ofc the male lead would be Jisoo! haha okay enough, i'll leave.

Erm, Lee Soo-hyuk and Kim So-eun maybe? No, okay nevermind then. BTW, I just read on Soompi that both Im Joo-hwan and Im Joo-eun are the second leads for that Woo-bin and Suzy drama. Im Joo-eun playing second lead to Suzy, Suzy! Just why? I don't understand. Oh well, I really hope Suzy has improved in her acting, although she wasn't that bad in what I saw of Gu Family Book. Definitely much better than robo Hye-mi.

The story is so cliche (based on the article, havent read the manga) and reminded me of Princess Hours a bit. Maybe its the part where it is a contract marriage, the girl is a 19 year old and both have complete opposite personalities. But, I agree with the comments above. Choosing the right leads, whether they are newcomers or not will make this work. *crosses fingers*
