JTBC pushes Madam Antoine, rebroadcasts Padam Padam
by javabeans
Hm, interesting decision. It had been previously reported that JTBC was intending to air Madam Antoine, its psychiatrist-fortuneteller rom-com starring Han Ye-seul and Sung Joon, as its next Friday-Saturday drama following disaster drama D-Day, which wrapped this past Saturday. Instead, JTBC has decided to rebroadcast an old drama, 2011’s fantasy-romance melo Padam Padam — The Sound of His and Her Heartbeats. That’s quite the last-minute switcheroo.
Rerunning dramas isn’t an unusual practice, but reruns typically air throughout the week and in other timeslots; what’s unexpected is that a cable station would give up a prime-time spot for a show that already had a full run years ago, pushing back new original programming to do so. Which makes me think it’s more about Madam Antoine needing extra time to prepare than it is about Padam Padam meriting a second run.
I wonder why JTBC chose Padam Padam to rebroadcast, of all the shows in their backlist; they could have rerun current variety programming — they have a number of hits, like Take Care of My Refrigerator, Abnormal Summit, and Witch Hunt. They’ve also got bigger drama successes like Secret Love Affair and Wife’s Credentials in their archives, though perhaps this would be an opportunity to give Padam Padam a second shot at picking up a bigger audience. It was considered a good show for JTBC back when it premiered, and having big stars like Jung Woo-sung and Han Ji-min (not to mention star producers like writer Noh Hee-kyung and director Kim Kyu-tae) was a big get for a brand-new cable station.
In its first run, the drama netted above 1% ratings, which at the time was a mark of a successful cable show. With cable now taking up increasingly bigger pieces of the ratings pie, it’s conceivable that a second run could also do decently well… though you’d have to contend with the fact that a huge chunk of suspense is missing now, since fans can always get their hands on the whole series online. Does this move make sense for the station, or will the timeslot just be a void until new programming starts up next year?
Padam Padam begins its run this weekend on Friday, November 27. Madam Antoine will now premiere next February.

Padam was so bad, I could not finish watching it in the first time. Why a second round.
Madame Antoine I will give a try for everyone but Han Ye-Sul. She is so bad an actress. Such a plastic personality every time I see her. Shudder at the prospect of going through another drama with her, but the rest of the cast is so awesome.

You obviously are too dim to appreciate such a fine work.

You're in the minority here, pal. I really, really enjoyed Padam. For a melo, it was really well done and I didn't feel like I had to force myself to watch a draggy and overexaggerated melo. Jung Woo Sung was so sweet too, as the lumbering male lead.

Hmm if it's true to avoid Reply, then maybe all these TV stations need to consider about airing dramas in the different time slot, so there will be no more rating battle LOL I think I Db translated the article about it months ago ???

Interesting. If I remember correctly, wasn't Padam Padam JTBC's first drama?
I have nothing but good memories of PP, it was refreshingly different, and despite the dark supernatural elements and melo story, it was really addictive. It definitely doesn't hurt that JUNG WOO-SUNG who rarely does dramas was fantastic in it.

I really liked Padam. Its one of the few melos I could sit through. But a huge part of it was the mystery because the romance was lackluster. So this is an odd choice to re-run.

A wise choice to avoid competing with Reply 1988. Makes me think of the drama Miss Korea. If only it had not aired opposite My Love from the Stars, it would have been noticed more.

I'm inclined to think there was just no time for "Madame Antoine" to prepare. You'd have to wonder why it was not being promoted when "D-Day" was drawing to a close. It was actually quite rushed too, because we only knew it was eyed as a followup when "D-Day" was already airing. If they only really wanted to avoid "Answer Me, 1988," they only needed to push it back a week and air it on the Saturday-Sunday 9:40 p.m. slot, since "Awl" is doing better.

Awl isn't doing that great either, considering JTBC had hopes of it being the next Misaeng and it even started out with higher ratings than Misaeng had for its first ep - ratings aren't disastrous, but they're probably a little below expectations.

If so, maybe it's a good thing? Korean drama filming conditions are pretty inhumane, after all.

Oh Padam Padam... Started out as such a fascinating and interesting drama, but I remember getting bored by the pace. I really had to force myself to watch the last couple of episodes.

I love this drama, so I'm definitely overjoyed that they're giving it a re-run. The scriptwriter did an excellent with character development as well as the storyline which wasn't overdone. The characters are relatable and very human. I highly recommend the OST to everyone especially Noel --- In Order to Live

I find Padam Padam definitely worth a re-run. It is one of the very few shows I re-watched. Kim Bum as the bipolar angel is to die for :)
Also, I think it may be interesting from business point of view, as the position of cable channels in the market has changed since it was originally broadcast.

Padam Padam was quite well done. I loved how she warmed up to him and he was this huge guy that she grew to love. It was a good story and as someone else put it the bipolar angel was great. I think they showed a very difficult relationship develop and succeed considering the odds against him. Also an adult relationship with none of that stupid naivety they show among older adults when sex is involved. They acted like adults and this is so rare in most dramas
