Bu Bu Jing Xin remake Moon Lovers courts Nam Joo-hyuk

At this rate, every flower boy actor in dramaland will be cast in this drama. Totally not a complaint, by the way, but then you probably already knew that. Moon Lovers, the Korean drama remake of the hit Chinese series Bu Bu Jing Xin, is adding another name to the “considering-favorably” list of cast hopefuls. Nam Joo-hyuk (Who Are You—School 2015) is being courted to join the series, despite the fact that his next drama Cheese in the Trap will be airing from January to March of next year. No rest for the new kid on the block, I see.

The original drama was a time-slip romance that took a contemporary heroine and sent her back to the Qing era, where she was embroiled in a royal love triangle (Square? Hexagon? From the way you guys talk, maybe it’s more like dodecahedron?) with princes. The Korean remake will take a heroine from present-day Seoul and send her back in time to early Goryeo.

Lee Jun-ki (Scholar Who Walks the Night) is being courted to play Gwangjong, Goryeo’s fourth king, and Kang Haneul (Misaeng) is confirmed to play his main rival. Additional princes will be played by Hong Jong-hyun (Mama) and EXO idol Baekhyun, though we haven’t heard much detail about their roles.

It hasn’t been announced what role Nam Joo-hyuk has been offered, though I’m guessing it’s safe to assume he’s probably another prince? I could see him as a flower boy scholar too, of course, in case everyone doesn’t have to be a royal to be on this love train. What I’m more curious about is who they’ll get to play the heroine that ALL of the boys fall in love with.

Directing the remake is PD Kim Kyu-tae of It’s Okay, It’s Love and That Winter, the Wind Blows, and writer Jo Yoon-young of Cinderella Man and Save the Last Dance for Me is penning the script. The drama plans to film in advance of its broadcast, and is set to begin shooting in mid-February.

Moon Lovers doesn’t have a broadcaster yet; it hopes to air in late 2016.

Even her role is BOF introduced her to me, (I may be cruel, but she outshine GHS in BOF, thanks to Kim Bum as well, until now they still have shippers more than the main lead), but Empress CHun Chu was the best role she has played so far. I am in hunger to see her in that kind of role again.

This drama keeps casting wrong people (even if I actually love some of those 'wrong people'). It's just that I don't think Kang Ha-neul or Nam Joo-hyuk are the right age for any of the princes. They're too young and I prefer them doing more youthful and fun Sageuks instead of super heavy melos. Now I need to know who's the heroine. If they cast an eyeroll, I'm out, duh. Even if they cast someone decent, I think I'm still out...

P.s. Nam Joo-hyuk, go get some rest! The guy's been acting non-stop since School. Yay for working on his acting and taking on supporting roles. Nay for probably no sleep!

@Kiara - I have zero knowledge of the original but the more they add to the casting, the more pessimistic I get.

I mean, Nam Joo-hyuk? Hong Jong-hyun? Are we casting actors here or planting a freaking forest, because that's how wooden they are. Even the cast of SWWTN actually did their jobs decently despite a messy script, I can't be sure that this lot can manage that. Evidence says no.

Baek Jin-hee has a good tendency to lend strength and presence to otherwise very vanilla characters, but I've never seen BBJX so I don't know whether she'd be the right fit for the heroine of that drama.

@BOFfan: Now that u said it, I CERTAINLY WANT GOO HYE-SUN to be Ruo Xi. Thanks for mentioning her!! Omg never thought of her. She is perfect! (Coz I think Lee Min-jung as Ruo Xi tbh)

Now I'm confused. This Nam Joo-hyuk certainly fits 10th Prince. Coz he is CERTAINLY not Crown Prince either. All flowerboys flock this drama, huh. Hope they could pull off that authoritative stance with the attitude of a king.

You're right Kiara, 4th Prince was tailored for Nicky Wu. I quite cannot think of anybody portraying 4th except Nicky.

Now that you mention it, you are quite right coz Jang Hyuk can portray it like... romantic but not showy, confident, ambitious but not greedy.

Back to Nicky Wu as 4th Prince. I wonder how did the casting director get it THAT perfect!

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Nicky was the not the first choice to play the role of Prince 4th though. It was first offered to Yuan Hong (Prince 13th), but he was going to leave his management company (Tangren - the company that produced BBJX), so he was given a supporting role instead. Prince 4th was then offered to Wallace Chung and Wallace Huo, who both declined. Huang Xiaoming was also on the list.

Director Lee then offered the script to Kevin Cheng (Prince 8th) and gave him the choice to choose between Prince 8th and Prince 4th, and Kevin picked Prince 8th in the end, so Prince 4th fell down in the hands of Nicky.

On a sidenote, Liu Shishi (Ruoxi) was suppose to be Mingyu (Prince 10th's wife). And Ruoxi was first offered to Jiang Yiyan who declined the role because she looked down on the time-travelling subject, so the role ultimately went to Liu Shishi as her first leading role.

Required fields are marked *

I don't think Yuan Hong was first choice at all. I know the casting went something like Huang Xiaoming --> Wallace Huo --> W. Chung --> Huang Lei. NW was like the savior for TR because no one wanted this drama. I think all four choices would have done an equally good job though.

Nicky nailed the role for 4th Prince and I loved him in this series!!

The only good casts are LJK and KHN so far. The female lead needs to be extra good, Park Bo Young might be the greatest choice that I can think of. Baek Jin Hee, or Kim So Eun might be the among the great choices too. Just choose a good actress, please no idol or acress who can't act. ??

It's mainly about the main girl trying to survive in the palace and her romance with the 4th and 8th prince. The female lead character appears to be headstrong like a modern girl in the start, and then gradually become more quiet and wise.

The main characters are the heart of the drama, so hopefully the production choose someone who can act.

Producer: Hey Lee Jun Ki, do you wanna star in another sageuk? You always seems interested with sageuk.
LJK: Well, I don't think so. I'm currently filming Resident Evil, y'know.
Producer: But this is interesting! Very interesting! It's sageuk set in Goryeo! Moreover it's Bu Bu Jing Xin remake, that drama was super populer in China.
LJK: Yeah yeah I know it. Now I'm mildly interested.
Producer: Y'know the PD? It's Kim Kyu Tae man! You'd look beautiful in every shot!
LJK: Hmmm...
Producer: Oh you'll be 4th Prince!
LJK: I'll consider it.
Producer: and with Kang Ha Neul and other talented actors. Nobody would even have wooden acting.
LJK: Seems interesting. I'll agree if you give me contract now.
Producer: Alright. *evil grin*

Flash forward today... Well, Lee Jun Ki and Kang Ha Neul are the only ones with good acting skills. No offense to other actors.

As a diehard Bu Bu Jing Xin fan, I can only say that I'm very disappointed with the casting of all these young idol actors. What are they trying to turn this in? Boys over Flowers' ancient version about unicorns and rainbows?

Bu Bu Jing Xin is a "serious" drama about princes fighting over the throne. The princes are suppose to be mature, knew exactly what they were doing, and had wives and concubines at home (4th Prince was 35-40ish by the time he became the Emperor). They were MEN and not BOYS. But I guess the Korean version is still going with the old-time "first love" formula.

Did they even read the novel or watch they drama? Or do they just want to take advantage of BBJX's fame in China by merely borrowing it's name? Considering the fact that they are aiming this towards the Chinese market as well..

0

Required fields are marked *

Heh, I don't even know what they are thinking, using a Korean remake of a famous Chinese drama to target the Chinese market? They're just asking to be shredded into bits by the Chinese audience/netizens. It's like airing the Chinese version of Running Man or DWAYG on Korea's public tv stations.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think he's hard to judge what direction the Korean producers are going to take with the remake. It could be a complete copy or be "loosely based" on the original. Either way, some things are going to be made up - because the korean history did not have anything near the amount of princes the Qing dynasty has in BBJX (if I'm not mistaken)

0

The Goryeo era that they are going to set the drama in had a king with more than 20 children (princes and princesses), and several of the princes (at least 3) became king over various periods in time. The 4th prince is the ruthless king, who lasted in power the longest.

They absolutely need a decent actress in this role. Otherwise, the whole series will flop... Not that things are looking that good in general for the male role casting so far. =X

If you don't know anything about the original, maybe you would consider watching it... ^^ Cast is strong even for newbie actors (14th Prince) and everyone did his/her part well. Kim So-eun is a very very brilliant actress, but she is not Ruo Xi imo I promise. She does well in sageuks. Personally I think she outshone Lee Yo-won in Horse Doctor. Her chemistry with Jo Seung-woo is fantastic.

If she is given the Ruo Xi role, I am not against, but they could have casted better. (Shucks I am a big fan of BBJX I'm so into this having an ideal cast) Like said above, Goo Hye-sun or... my personal choice (really truly prayerfully) Lee Min-jung - who is like Ruo Xi herself.

Lee Jun-ki is a fine choice, but as Kiara mentioned, Nicky is the perfect choice, and if it were in the Korean context, only Jang Hyuk could go a bit nearer.

BBJX is heavy definitely. All the struggles for politics and prince syndromes. Towards the end is a bit unbearable for me. 4th Prince and Ruo Xi's struggle to be together against all odds.

Thank you mifriend @Blossom for the trivia. Kevin Cheng is so hot. I definitely felt intense chemistry between 8th Prince and Ruoxi. I must admit Kevin Cheng made me sway a bit. I shipped them too OK! Great choice he made being 8th Prince. ;-)

I will always remember her role in Empress Chu even she had short period of time there. I have watched GHS in sageuk, but she just remain pretty lady for me. I don't get the feel. Her only character that I liked a little was in Angel Eyes, thanks to her co-star as well.

LMJ is a nice choice too, but doesn't she a bit old to play this role? I will go for Park Bo Young for the first choice.

So I just started watching Bu Bu Jing Xin (I'm on episode 7 to be exact) and I get the appeal, the drama is very good and intriguing and the girl who pays Ruoxi is fantastic.

My pick for Korean Ruoxi is Han Groo. She's young enough to play the character, quirky enough to encompass the free spirited Ruoxi but still has awesome acting chops... other than that, I'd like to see Yoon Eun Hye make a comeback and this might be a good drama for her as well.

Can someone finally comment on the fact they chose a crappy scriptwriter for this production? Who has not had a successful drama in 10 years, and only had one successful drama prior?

They are going the route of A Time With You remake - in getting wonderful cast, good director - and a lousy scriptwriter - and dreaming it is somehow going to be a success!

Shame on them for such a production they do not bother to secure a really amazing scriptwriter with great track-record.

Who cares about all the eye candy with a lousy scriptwriter? I hope they all decline.

I honestly have never liked korean remakes of chinese and japanese dramas. Just look at hana yorindango, hana kimi, the time we're in love, liar game.... All were quite awful tbh. The only remake that stood out was you're beautiful

I watched a little this original drama, damn what with these casts? Only LJK and KHN are solid. Can't they have better actors to play the role of princes? SK has plenty of talented actors. Even the storyline is a mess later, but good actors can at least save it a bit (look at SWWTN).

I think i don't feel to see my favourite actresses to be a lead or part of this drama. They should just announce the female lead already, so we can already decide to watch or not to watch later.

Nam Joohyuk bores me to death. Go learn how to act first before you act with Lee Junki and Kang Haneul

The heroine have older sister - Maertai Ruolan. 8th Prince wife

Maybe you mixed up with the sequel (the story after Zhang Xiao wake up from coma) Bu Bu Jing Qing, (not recommended it though, but Nicky Wu and Liu Shi Shi so sizzling there)

Bu Bu Jing Xin was drama adaptation from same novel title, author by Tong Hua, but not with Bu Bu Jing Qing (sequel)

Wow, NJH got an offer. Quite a field of flower boys indeed. I don't know how this is all gonna work since I don't know Korean history. Wonder how many fictional characters they would need to create if no moment in time actually had that many princes in Korea... Maybe they will dump down the number of princes? I'm actually very curious about the heroine cuz she was absolutely pivotal to the plot in the original series. Even with all the princes battling for the throne, her story was the core and Shishi never got overshadowed by Nicky or Kevin in the original series.

@anna
"you're beautiful" isn't a remake. It's original, Japan the one who made the remake as I know.

Idk, I'm not really interested for now. I like LJK in Arang and the magistrate only. the last saeguk he played only made me stay in episode 4.

I would be glad if KHN be the lead.. hahaa..

but no one can save this drama except its own quality, so even it's a remake, if the writer can qrite the script well and interesting, I'm sure it will be good.
