She Was Pretty: Episode 8
by LollyPip
As Sung-joon spends more time getting to know Hye-jin, it gets harder for him to ignore the little doubts that crop up whenever she reminds him of his childhood friend. But with the beautiful Ha-ri insisting she’s Hye-jin, it’s no wonder he’s so confused that he starts to fall apart. He’s already carrying some pretty big professional and personal baggage, and his conflicted feelings aren’t making his life any easier these days.
EPISODE 8 RECAP
Shin-hyuk spies Ha-ri kissing Sung-joon, and spins Hye-jin around to fold her in a backhug so she won’t see. She breaks his hold right away so he tells her someone is drunk and urinating in the street, and hustles her away quickly.
Meanwhile Ha-ri continues her confession, telling Sung-joon that she wants to be more than his childhood friend – she wants to be his girlfriend. She asks for an answer and he thinks about it for so long, she assumes he’s not interested, but Sung-joon comes to a decision and leads her away.
Hye-jin is still annoyed with Shin-hyuk for letting her think the family dog was a real little sister, but he has more serious things on his mind. He asks if her roommate is the same friend she considers her other half, guessing they must be very close.
Hye-jin tells him that they’ve been friends since birth, because their mothers were friends. She says that when something good happens to her, Ha-ri is the only person who’s truly happy for her. Shin-hyuk just rolls his eyes at that, knowing better, but he looks at the pictures of Ha-ri on Hye-jin’s phone to humor her.
He grumbles that she’s way prettier, only Hye-jin assumes he’s teasing her again. Torn between wanting her to know the truth and not wanting to ruin her image of her best friend, Shin-hyuk lets it go for now.
Sung-joon takes Ha-ri to a wall where he once carved a cartoon of himself and the real Hye-jin. They’d agreed to come back here at junior high graduation, but he’d moved away. Now Sung-joon finds it still there, but Ha-ri asks if they can stop talking about the past anymore — the present is more important to her.
Sung-joon takes out a pen and makes another drawing on the wall, of the two of them as adults, and agrees not to talk about the past anymore. Ha-ri uses her lipstick to draw a heart around his doodle. But when she drives home, she doesn’t look happy, and just lays her head on her steering wheel.
The guy she sometimes dates is waiting for her and asks why she doesn’t return his calls anymore. She tells him he’s out, so he insults the guy she must be dating now, and she nearly knocks his block off.
She rounds the corner and finds Hye-jin, who overheard that she’s dating someone. Ha-ri seems about to come clean until Hye-jin grabs her in a hug, excited for her friend. Hye-jin remembers Ha-ri saying she would never fall in love, because she couldn’t handle a man leaving her like her mother did.
Hye-jin is curious about this amazing man capable of making her friend change, but Ha-ri doesn’t say a single word as Hye-jin chatters. Hye-jin runs off to get some celebratory beers, and calls back to Ha-ri that she’ll be cheering on her love. Ha-ri thinks to her friend that she’s sorry, but she just wants to be with him for the two months that he’s here.
Sung-joon arrives home to have the life scared out of him by Shin-hyuk, who’s let himself in again and is now going through Sung-joon’s closet. Boundaries, dude. He’s here to get the underwear he wore and left here the day he ended up in Sung-joon’s, and I swear I’ll never get tired of Sung-joon crying, “Panty, panty!” in that frustrated tone.
Shin-hyuk asks if he was out on a date, saying that there’s a rumor he’s got a beautiful girlfriend. He wonders how much Sung-joon knows about her — not everything is as it seems. Shin-hyuk admits that there’s something he’d like to tell Sung-joon, but he hasn’t decided if he has the right so for now, he leaves without saying anything. Once he’s out of the apartment his cheerful mood falls, and he seems very conflicted.
Hye=jin catches Ha-ri on the phone with Sung-joon making date plans, and calls out a congratulations for Ha-ri’s new guy to hear. Ha-ri quickly hangs up, and clutches her stomach as if she’s not feeling well.
When Hye-jin gets to work she finds the Most staff frowning at the concept board, unable to decide between two dresses, but they’re interrupted by Chief Editor Kim. She has them quickly pick between two Chinese food dishes on their gut feeling, then has them do the same for the concept. She says that whatever comes out when you’re not thinking, even when your head and heart disagree, is what you really want.
Shin-hyuk helps Hye-jin carry some items to storage when the sole comes off her shoe. He offers her a piggyback which she declines several times, and his pants rip when he crouches down. He tells her to get on his back quick, though I fail to see how that covers up the rip.
On the walk to the storage facility, Shin-hyuk asks if Hye-jin has told Sung-joon the truth yet. She says she was interrupted by him when she tried, but she’s got plans to tell Sung-joon soon. He quietly asks if she’s just looking to reconnect with her old friend, or if she expects something more. Hye-jin hadn’t thought about it that way, but she remembers Chief Editor Kim’s words that what our heart says when we’re not thinking, is the truth.
On his way to a date with Ha-ri, Sung-joon sees Shin-hyuk piggybacking Hye-jin slowly down the street. He’s so busy looking at them that he rear-ends another car, and it makes him miss the movie. Ha-ri makes a big deal about the accident, worried that he could have gotten hurt, and Sung-joon pulls her into a grateful hug. He apologizes for doing things that could worry her, and promises to get his head on straight.
Back in his office Sung-joon goes through his photos from the beach trip, and pauses when he comes to the ones with Hye-jin. She brings him breakfast but he’s short with her, and tells her to take it away. Hye-jin is confused, but gives Sung-joon space. He sees Hye-jin looking at him sadly through his window, and he looks purely miserable — but he shuts the blinds against her anyway.
That night Sung-joon surprises Ha-ri by taking her to a small theater that’s still showing the movie they missed. But he’s distracted during the show, not even responding when Ha-ri locks arms with him. Ha-ri can feel his distance, and after the movie he doesn’t even remember a key scene, and it’s obvious he wasn’t paying attention.
Hye-jin buys the latest edition of Most just to see her name on the credits page, and her family are so proud. In the morning she ends up at the crosswalk near Sung-joon again, and her signature, “Oh, it’s a go!” catches his attention. He runs to her and grabs her wrist, with an unreadable expression on his face.
Oblivious, Hye-jin reminds him of their dinner plans tonight and chirps happily over her name in the magazine, then runs off to work. Sung-joon gets a call just then from Ha-ri, but he’s still frozen and doesn’t answer.
This month’s edition of Most has catapulted them to second place, but Sung-joon is reminded that they need to get to first place with only two months left. Hye-jin sees Sung-joon looking stressed out and asks if he’s okay, but he just ignores her and leaves.
At the cover shoot, the Most staff is going gaga over a James Taylor original dress, but Sung-joon suddenly hollers at them to delete the pictures they’re taking immediately. He’s correct that they can’t risk this design being leaked before the twentieth anniversary edition, but he’s unnecessarily mean about it.
When one girl tries to take the dress to the dressing room, Sung-joon snatches her hand away and yells at her for wearing dangling accessories that could damage the clothing. He kicks her out, and again he’s not wrong, but he makes her cry.
Shin-hyuk and Hye-jin observe Sung-joon’s meltdown, and Shin-hyuk says that today isn’t really a good day to talk to him. She’s given the job of taking the dress to the dressing room and watching over it, but Seul pulls rank and sends her to move her car.
Ha-ri gets stomach pains again at work, and doesn’t notice Shin-hyuk glaring at her in the lobby. He finds her in her office and gets right to the point: “You stop it first.” He admits that this isn’t his place, but he can’t stay silent anymore. He tells Ha-ri that Sung-joon and Hye-jin are meeting tonight and that Hye-jin plans to tell Sung-joon the truth.
He points out that if she’s going to be found out, wouldn’t it be better to tell the truth herself, first? That would cause the three of them the least hurt, and allow them to manage the fallout.
Hye-jin comes back from moving Seul’s car with her hair even fluffier than usual from the rain. She makes her usual “viciously curly hair” joke which Sung-joon overhears, and this time he can’t deny that she’s the one who said it. That, along with the other clues like her “It’s a go!” joke and the way she sheltered him from the rain with her jacket, all fall into place and he stares at her, incredulous.
But as he’s having his epiphany, the model comes out in the James Taylor dress and a snag is discovered. They can’t do the cover shoot with a torn dress, and Sung-joon can’t take any more. He screams out a demand to know who was in charge of the clothing.
Hye-jin comes forward and Sung-joon just gives her this… look. He asks, “You again? Why is it always you?!” In front of everyone he yells that she’s always getting on his nerves, looking like he could burst into tears at any moment. We know that it’s because he finally realizes who she is and that she and Ha-ri have both been lying to him, but she doesn’t, and she’s humiliated.
Hye-jin apologizes for not being careful, but Sung-joon growls at her to get out. He’s going nuts with her always around, and tells her never to show up in front of him again. She’s fired.
After she leaves, another model comes to Sung-joon and tearfully confesses that she tore the dress. Sung-joon wearily lets her go, but Reporter Cha asks what he plans to do about Hye-jin. He doesn’t answer, but sends everyone home.
Ha-ri leaves work in a rush and tries to call Sung-joon, determined to tell him the truth before he hears it from someone else. He sits at the studio in a daze, ignoring her calls. Hye-jin calls Ha-ri to tell her that Sung-joon fired her, so Ha-ri rushes to meet her.
Hye-jin tells her friend that during their trip she and Sung-joon became closer, which made her think he was still the same boy she knew. She was going to open up and tell him everything, but today she learned that to him, she’s just someone he can fire without a thought.
Teary-eyed, Ha-ri lays her head on Hye-jin’s shoulder and says she’s sorry. Hye-jin teases her, thinking she’s crying because she got fired, and says that this is a good thing — she won’t have to keep feeling so conflicted when she sees Sung-joon.
The next morning, the Most team are very vocal about how much Hye-jin is missed — they only now realize how much work she was handling. Even the managerial team, Hye-jin’s original department, wishes they could hire her back for themselves but they don’t have the authority.
Sung-joon is back to his old grouchy self at the next staff meeting, angry that nobody has a good concept for their twentieth anniversary edition. Shin-hyuk finally suggests a movie theme with a twist — focusing on the supporting characters, like the Broadway show “Wicked” did with the wicked witch.
The team take this and run with it, excited about the idea, and Sung-joon starts to roll up his sleeves like he does when he likes something. He suggests they broaden the concept — if you change your point of view, the world looks different. Shine the light on the supporting characters, and the story can completely change.
Later Shin-hyuk brings Sung-joon a notebook full of movie-twist ideas, and Sung-joon realizes this whole concept was Hye-jin’s. Shin-hyuk respectfully suggests that if theyr’e going to use her concept, they ought to bring her back.
Apparently Reporter Cha already asked Hye-jin back and was refused, but Shin-hyuk thinks that if the person who fired her asked, she would return. But Sung-joon balks at apologizing to an intern, and Shin-hyuk notes that Sung-joon seems awfully emotional when it comes to Hye-jin. Almost as if he feels something for her?
He has one more question for Sung-joon: If a different intern made the same mistake, would he have reacted the same way? He insists on an answer when Sung-joon hesitates, and repeats Chief Editor Kim’s words that when your head says one thing and your heart another, that’s when you hesitate.
That hits a nerve, and Sung-joon demands to know why Shin-hyuk is getting so involved in Hye-jin’s life. Shin-hyuk says honestly that it’s because he likes her, and leaves.
Shin-hyuk hangs around Hye-jin’s house, pretending to just be in the neighborhood, and begs her to come back to Most. She declines so he offers to hire her as his personal assistant for a day… but she refuses that too, and he uses his second request to lock her into it.
So she follows him around while he takes pictures, her only job to hold his water bottle, hee. They stop at a flight of stairs and Shin-hyuk tells her she gets a wish if she can hop all the way down the stairs on one leg, so she does it, shrieking her wish to get a job with every hop. Of course Shin-hyuk takes pictures, and dies laughing when she realizes he was teasing her again.
They ride out to the country on his motorcycle and take goofy selcas together, but Shin-hyuk looks at Hye-jin sadly when she’s not paying attention. They go for a walk and Hye-jin admits that Shin-hyuk was right when he asked if she was thinking of reconnecting with Sung-joon as more than a friend.
But she says it’s like there was a one-way mirror between her and Sung-joon, because she could always see him but he never saw her. That’s why this has been so painful for her, but she thanks Shin-hyuk for his help getting through it. He just grins that if she’s so thankful she should go out with him, making her smile.
Sung-joon finally looks through Hye-jin’s concept book, reading one passage she wrote as if from the Little Mermaid’s point of view. She wrote that she only saved the prince because he was in need of help, and she never lied on purpose. He reads further mini-stories from the less-famous fairy tale characters and smiles, enjoying the different point of view.
Hye-jin’s old managerial department supervisor calls to meet with her, and he offers Hye-jin a job at a relative’s company. She happily accepts and heads home, unaware that Sung-joon is trailing behind her carrying her notebook.
He’s so nervous that he jumps like a cat when her phone rings, and ends up hiding in the jungle gym. He’s forced to climb through it to avoid her seeing him, and embarrassingly slides down the slide headfirst to land right at her feet.
He tells her he’d like to use her idea for their anniversary edition and asks her to come back, and she gives him permission to use her concept but turns down the job. Sung-joon admits that he was too sensitive the day he fired her, and went too far. He apologizes quite sincerely and asks her again to come back, but she declines again. Hye-jin says that it’s uncomfortable working with him, but she does thank him for coming to talk to her personally.
The next day, the first thing Sung-joon notices is Hye-jin’s Onion Head on her desk, which has now sprouted. Hye-jin waits to hear about the new job, but when she calls her old manager, he tells her that there’s no job after all. She thinks back on Sung-joon’s offer, but she’s determined not to go back.
She goes to her dad’s print shop to see him but he’s out, so she decides to hide and scare him. But instead she overhears a conversation between Dad and a customer, where Dad’s late on an order because his machine is broken again. The customer says to ask his big-shot daughter with the fancy new job to buy a new machine, and Hye-jin starts to rethink her refusal to go back to Most.
She sneaks out and calls her dad, and he lies and says that everything is going well. Hyejin starts to choke up and ends the call, pretending she’s hard at work. She steels her nerves, berating herself for turning down Sung-joon’s job offer, but before she can call him she gets another call from her old manager. The job offer with his family member is back on the table.
She gets a text from Sung-joon just then with a picture of Onion Head, now with tears drawn on his face, and asking if she’s going to leave him there alone. It’s not hers, which Sung-joon has left untouched, but she doesn’t know that.
The next day the phone rings at Most, and a strange woman answers the phone. But she introduces herself as Kim Hye-jin, and the whole office looks up. It’s Hye-jin, back to work with a brand-new, very Most-like look.
COMMENTS
Well, I’m conflicted about Hye-jin’s makeover. One the one hand, she looks amazing. On the other hand, I didn’t think she looked bad before, just a bit unkempt at times. But the curly hair wasn’t so terrible, other than needing a bit of styling, and her freckles and rosy cheeks were downright endearing. I’m sort of frustrated with her for buying into the whole makeover idea, though I can’t really fault her for it, because people weren’t taking her seriously. She never required them to, and just let them walk all over her, but that’s a different complaint. I suppose I just should wait for her explanation as to why she did this now, since I don’t really understand what motivated her to do it at this point in the story. But… she does look gorgeous.
More than that though, I’m getting really frustrated and I’m ready for people to start talking. Thank goodness Shin-hyuk is an open book or I’d be ready to give up on all of them, because there are so many secrets being kept for no good reason. I don’t mind when a character holds back information for a valid purpose, like that the truth would put someone in danger. But just keeping vital information to themselves for no reason other than that it’s awkward (or let’s be honest, to prolong the story) is frustrating. It’s downright infuriating that Ha-ri was ready to tell Sung-joon the truth until she found out about his and Hye-jin’s falling out. Just when I thought she was going to do the right thing, she got an excuse to keep doing the wrong thing and ran with it. I used to really love her character, but now, I’m just glad that Sung-joon’s figured out the truth, because it’s clear that she was never going to tell him on her own.
On the other hand, my favorite thing about Shin-hyuk is his to-a-fault honesty — if he has something to say, he says it, and if he has a question about something bothering him, he asks. He may be a jokester, but he doesn’t mess with a person’s feelings. I liked that it was Shin-hyuk who confronted Ha-ri, and he did it so gently. He did it mostly because he doesn’t want to see Hye-jin hurt, but he’s also compassionate to Ha-ri’s feelings, and gave her a chance to end this in a mature, adult way. And I love that he’s willing to help Sung-joon and Hye-jin mend their friendship, even though it means he’ll probably lose her. He’s really the most mature, honest character in the show, despite his initial goofball impression.
I’ve been frustrated with Sung-joon for some time now, because you know he felt something wasn’t right with Ha-ri. He’s known something about her was off for a long time. When she told him she didn’t want to talk about the past anymore, that should have been a huge red flag, because someone you knew as a child wouldn’t just say, “Let’s never mention our childhood friendship ever again,” for no reason. I would find that extremely strange at best, a giant flashing neon SOMETHING IS WRONG ABOUT THIS PERSON sign at worst. And yet Sung-joon didn’t even question it, and just went along with her. At this point he’s actively sabotaging himself, because that should have caused him to start asking questions about her again like he did before. Even his own therapist warned him against this, but he’s just going against good advice and his own instincts. Being tricked and lied to unknowingly is one thing, and I’m sympathetic to him on that front, but willful ignorance in the face of some pretty glaring inconsistencies is another thing entirely. All for the sake of a memory.
On the other hand, he’s under a tremendous amount of stress, which would be hard for anyone. But we know that Sung-joon isn’t eating properly on top of facing responsibility for how many hundreds of jobs among the Most staff, not to mention his own. It’s not the time to be thinking about dating at all, much less when you suspect that the woman you’re dating may not be the person she claims to be, literally. But at least he finally figured the truth out on his own and didn’t need someone else to tell him, and I’m glad the story let him put the clues together himself. He’s too smart of a man not to know, in the face of so much evidence. So I’m torn between being very frustrated with him, and sympathizing that he’s trying to do the best he can under the weight of so much professional pressure. I don’t even blame him for firing Hye-jin, because allowing a one-of-a-kind designer dress to become ruined is something worth losing your job for, in their precarious situation. But Sung-joon reacted emotionally, and fired her in the most humiliating way possible, and Hye-jin didn’t deserve that.
I just hope that this new, repentant and apologetic Sung-joon sticks around, because now that he knows, he needs to show Hye-jin how very sorry he is. In this sense I wouldn’t mind if he kept it to himself that he knows she’s hisHye-jin, because it would be nice to see him make it up to her without her thinking he’s only doing it because she knows who he is. She deserves to be treated well for who she is, and not for who she was — so I do hope Sung-joon keeps this to himself until she forgives him.

THREE major issues present in the drama She Was Pretty
1) Sung-joon is a boy wonder capable of saving the magazine in three months.
As of episode 8, Sung-joon has displayed no special talent that would enable him to save the magazine. He has poor communication skills, almost no motivational skills, minimal leadership skills, has often been dismissive and has anger issues when under pressure. The magazine is staffed by professionals, yet Sung-joon has chosen not to state the importance of the next three issues. He does not have to reveal all, but the staff should be forewarned. During presentations, Sung-joon was all stick and no carrot. Meetings should be a free exchange of ideas, not an opportunity for him to assert his dominance. It is always a bad idea to model your brain storming sessions after the Spanish Inquisition with a three minute egg timer to boot. At one point, Sung-joon over hears So-ri, a staff member, bragging to her friend that she has been pushing her tasks onto the new intern. This is something a competent Deputy Editor would never tolerate. Sung-joon should have indirectly put a stop to this unprofessional behavior. To ignore unprofessional behavior is to condone it. No sane board of directors would believe that Sung-joon could propel THE MOST to number one.
2) THE MOST is staffed by professionals capable of publishing a number one fashion magazine.
As of episode 8, the vast majority of the editorial staff are portrayed as lazy and unprofessional. They are much more concerned with the lunch menu than their work assignments. Reporter Cha is the one noted exception to this generalization. She is shown to be talented, dedicated and hardworking. She seems to be able to get some useful work out of the other staff members, but is too busy reaching milestones to be a cat herder. The editorial staff consists of Reporter Cha, facial mask, three glamour gossip gals, gold digger, flower boy, prankster and creepy ass scratcher. As you can imagine, their names tell the whole story. They seem to take little pride in their own work and are perfectly content to pawn as much as they can onto Hye-jin. As a group, they have not idea about the concept of team work. Based on the competency of the editorial staff, I can only assume that Korea only has two fashion magazines.
3) Hye-jin and Ha-ri have a healthy, very close adult friendship.
At first glance Hye-jin and Ha-ri seem to have a healthy, very close adult friendship. Unfortunately, there are ample signs that this is not the case. In reality, Ha-ri is the troubled baby sister and Hye-jin is her adult supervision. Her responsible older sister. Ha-ri made it clear early on that she was only allowed to live away from home because she shared an apartment with Hye-jin. Obviously, Ha-ri's family looks to Hye-jin to take care of their daughter. Taking into account Hye-jin's "giving" personality she would definitely...

[continued]
Taking into account Hye-jin's "giving" personality she would definitely embrace this role. Their daily interactions support the assertion they care for each other like "sisters". The key to this relationship is that the baby sister will always be forgiven by her older sister. She is somehow less responsible for her misdeeds. Ha-ri can feel aweful about stealing Sung-joon, but she knows that Hye-jin will always forgive her. If a baby sister was troubled or scared she would definately seek comfort by sleeping with her older sister. Does that sound familar? Ha-ri is able to rationalize her betrayal because Hye-rin always wants what is best for her and Hye-rin will always forgive her. Has Ha-ri ever given you the impression that she is a responsible adult?

True. She hasn't really been so responsible. I think the fact that she was such a good friend and both her and Hye-jin were so bubbly made me think that she just resorts to being a kid when Hye-jin is around. But the way she handles a lot of her issues: Her dragging her feet when all she has to do is open her mouth and tell Hye-jin and Sung joon the truth, mainly, it's just like a kid would. Terrified of what the adults would say and so just keep it hidden until you're busted. Because believe me, that girl is going to get busted. The problem though is the fallout would rope Hye-jin in before Sung Joon discovers that the only time she's known that Ha-ri played her was when they first met. Honestly, I hope this drama goes the whole mile. Lets Hye-jin show how devastated she is that Ha-ri used her identity and has been lying by omission, and the same with Sung joon. Because honestly, like any kid, I think what Ha-ri needs now is some tough love. This show can't handle this betrayal by the whole I shall root for your love or I shall forgive you because we're friends route. I want to see tears, I want to see anger and I want to see Ha-ri work for forgiveness. That's the only way she would think twice when next she decides to do something stupid.

Totally agree I think this needs to happen, because Ha-ri isn't going to grow if she gets what she wants and perhaps Hye-jin needs to come out of Ha-ri's shadow and live by herself.

Is it only me or someone else felt that Ha ri even though she felt bad but was glad that Hye jin got fired so she won't be around Sung Joon (some how I felt like that, I must really hate Ha ri )
She and Sung Joon (Little less because he was also lied to and don't know half of the things going on) should pay for the way they treated Hye jin , if they just go with Hye jin forgiving mind I'll kill the writer that will just make Hye jin an easy women (They will destroy her characterization)

+10000 forever. I want tears, devastation, the whole package, something to show that the writer is very aware of the stakes and that people get their due. I really don't want any of the "I'll forgive you and let you continue on your downward spiral" foolishness, chaebal.

I disagree with #1 and #2, simply for the fact that I think they showed that the magazine was doing better but not best, and that decision making is part of being the boss. Also, I think the most staff hasn't been SHOWN to be good at their jobs, but they've certainly TOLD us before. Also, I never really see anyone (other than Shin Hyuk and that mean girl) do anything other than their jobs, so that may have been the most showing they've ever done. They gotta be second rate, anyway, so they're definitely showing that, and Sung Joon always shooting down their ideas is a good enough "show" for me. Not great, but good enough.
Also, I've said this before but it is definitely not Sung Joon's job to micromanage. When he heard that mean girl say she was making another do her work, professionally that's not his business. We like Hye Jin, we root for her, but it's Sung Joon's job to be impartial to that level, and make sure everyone's doing their work. It's Hye Jin's fault she agrees to do these things, and it's no director's job to correct that. We the viewers, and to an extent Sung Joon himself, are her friends, so to us it's bullshit.

I agree about the team. In the first few episodes, a few of them were portrayed in silly ways to introduce their characters and for comedy but in the last few episodes, they've almost always been shown working. In the last few episodes, we even saw them pull an all-nighter and you could tell that it's something they have probably done before.
I think Sung Joon was a wonder boy in the US but is just obviously way in over his head here. I think in his mind, telling the team what's really at stake might lead to them jumping ship or being completely demoralized because becoming #1 fashion mag in an entire country is no tiny task. Not saying the way he's managing things perfectly though.
I think he's finally understood that he at least needs Hye Jin. She's shown that she has great ideas, the beach brainstorming scene showed that they work together and on top of that, she knows what's really at stake for the company.

+1 its not sung joon's but Hye jin fault who accepts every random job she is told to even cleaning the coffee (She is helping but still) she should just mind her own job correctly. but also you can't go against seniors and its that senior's small mindedness that's hateful and Sung Joon doesn't have a place to speak when Hye jin's so easygoing

I agree somewhat about the team, but not much else. He is the boss - when he finds one of his employees shoving their work off on others to go partying, it is HIS responsibility to correct it. Hye Jin is a newbie, and the lowest on the totem pole - so she is going to do what she is told.
Sung Joon on the other hand is one of the worst leader/supervisors I have seen (and there are a LOT of really bad ones in k-dramas). The OP's comment ",,model your brain storming sessions after the Spanish Inquisition.." I think was right on the spot.
He is abusive, abrasive, dictatorial, and honestly does not seem to know WTF he is doing. Throwing tantrums and screaming at people does not build teamwork.

this is so true, Hye-jin will of course forgive Ha-ri or so we think perhaps working at most will actually give Hye-jin more of a backbone and maybe she'll finally cut Ha-ri off. Though I wonder if Ha-ri was the one who gave Hye-jin her makeover.

I don't know but have any of you guys worked in a office? Alot of people in offices are like that for example they wouldn't stay overtime etc... but this team did. I do think sung joon is a bit over the top, but there are actual bosses who are hardcore like that. Not that that is a good thing, but I think the writers are showing that his personal problems and his inability to be with the real Hye Jin is weighing on him and obviously even though it would be ideal for him not to bring his personal problems to work, who really ever doesn't?

I was posting almost the exact same feelings at episode 6. I was bemoaning the fact that 20 Again was fast coming to an end and at that time felt disappointed with SWP. But with SWP episode 8, I am now truly feeling satisfied with the way the story and characters are developing.
I absolutely adore Shin-hyuk, and I particularly enjoy when he is tormenting Sung-joon. Highlights include when he is carrying Hye-jin on his back and when he surprises Sung-joon at his home.
One particular note about Sung-joon's car accident. I can't count all the Korean dramas where someone is driving while spying on someone in their rear view mirror. Finally, SWP actually has someone collide with another car. I was beginning to think that all Koreans could drive without watching the road in front of them.
The scene with Sung-joon prone on the ground before Hye-jin after coming down the slide was priceless. Particularly the way he comments about the moon and then casually greets her as if nothing was particularly odd about the whole situation.
The crosswalk scene with Hye-jin's “Oh, it’s a go!” expression was also one of my favorites. For some reason (probably because he's a jerk) I enjoy when Sung-joon acts powerless in front of Hye-jin.
I still don't get all the Ha-ri bashing. I enjoy the relationship she has with Hye-jin. Yes, Ha-ri fell in love...and no, I don't think she's evil or cheating. Hye-jin doesn't even like what Sung-joon has become. It is almost like there has to be a competition as to who is better between the two. I don't need to compare them. I'd prefer to compare and contrast Shin-hyuk and Sung-joon.
I also prefer scenes between Hye-jin and Ha-ri. I find that I'm fast forwarding through scenes with Sung-joon and Ha-ri. I couldn't be more bored when they are together. Shin-hyuk urging Ha-ri to come clean was well done.
Ha-ri keeps holding her side, so there will be a medical emergency and a hospital scene coming in the near future. We'll see then how Hye-jin really loves Ha-ri like a sister... and the name on her medical chart may be revealing.

October 11, 2015 at 7:17 PM
I think twenty again can;t be compare because story wise it is a payoff story, when everything already done in the past and the heroine doesn't suffer anymore, I mean she already let go and in her bottom moment, so she only can go up from the 1st episode
in SWP it's all about how the problem start and multiplying, that's how it gives more unsettling feeling and gray area about the character, how the character will break down and their interaction got worse,
in twenty again it more subtle who to root cause there's clear line about who is the antagonist even if the 20 years love still questionable,
but in SWP they choose to show the moment of change in the character,as slow as it gets,
even if 20 again is full of cute and fanservice, I think SWP had win in the character interaction, 4 people, 4 relation, 4 ideal and how it all entangle by one accident that happen in their daily life

I agree with your first two points but disagree with point 3. I don't really see any evidence that Hye-jin "takes care of" Hari at all. Yes, Hari's family feels more comfortable with her living with Hye-jin but I feel like that's more because they know Hari is a bit of a Party Girl and Hye-jin is not so she can't get into tooooo much trouble with Hye-jin around. But, from what we've seen. Hari pretty much takes care of herself. She's the one with the stable job who pays all the household bills. In truth, Hye-jin was the one who needed to get it together. For all her partying (and really we've only seen this once, on her birthday) and dating around, she still manages to fucntion quite well in life. As far as we know, until this Sung-joon hiccup she'd been pretty level headed about men as well. She dated a lot but she didn't get carried away in relationships.
I can fully buy that the girls had a close, adult relationship that is now jeopardized by a cycle of bad decision making (mostly on Hari's part but some on Hye-jin's).

Seriously, how hard would it have been for Sung-joon, over a four episode period, to have spent a minute or two giving the individual members of the editorial staff constructive feedback. He could have done it away from the others, something low key and not meant to embarrass. If the writer had Hye-jin secretly observe some of these interactions, it would have reinforced her positive opinion of him. We would realized how competent he was and would have a real explanation for why the magazine improved sales. Instead we have, if the Deputy Editor yells at the editorial staff sales will improve. I do not expect realism, but I do expect possible.

I just think he is EXTREMELY confused, because she reminds him so much of the real Hye Jin, but then Ha Ri already gave him the puzzle piece so he has physical evidence that she (real Hye Jin) is not it. That is why he yells who are you after the dress is ripped.

The way he got emotional while he fired Hye Jin and the things he said sounded more personal than it should have been if he was simply angry about a mistake made by an employee while working.
He is so confused because the person who gave him the missing puzzle piece should be Hye Jin, but the Hye Jin he knows at work behaves more like the childhood friend he came to find but since he can't ask her to confirm it or she hasn't told him yet it is making him go beserk. I feel that's the only reason why he humiliated her too and that he was more angry at himself for not knowing it is her all along rather than being angry about Hye Jin letting the dress be torn while under her care.
I think it was a great scene. I want the story to go along as that he now knows Hye Jin at work is his childhood friend but he wont let her know that he knows, which would be interesting. Maybe he will play along until Hye Jin finally tells the truth for herself. However, I can't help but think that maybe the scriptwriter will make Sung Joon's character turn out to be a bit of an idiot by continuing the story as him not knowing who Hye Jin is even after all the familiarity and closeness he has felt with her.

But I absolutely DON'T THINK that Sung Joon knows anything. Not yet. Why would he? He didn't even know that the two "Hye Jin" knows each other, less that they are best friends.

First, I watched this episode 3 times already (dammit) but I didn't think even once he figured everything out.
Second, I doubt the drama would just pass such big development in the plot - it's what we've been going to since the beginning, isn't it? In my opinion, they would make another drama in a drama out of this revelation, with even more flashbacks (this drama surely likes its flashbacks).
So for now we're left with Hye Jin coming back to Most and a makeover for whatever reason (because everyone in dramaland should be pretty then everything goes great?).

I hope that Ha Ri's grabbing her stomach isn't something terminal and is only gas.

I don't think he knows for sure or 100% that she is Hyejin. However, the evidences are coming together. The latest one is about her hair and the rain. Right now he seems to be extremely confused because there is the real Hyejin but then Hari has the puzzle piece making her the "true" Hyejin. When he finds out that the two are"best friends" then he has a reason to think that Hari stole the piece and pretended to be Hyejin. It is no rocket science so I hope he figures it out when the truth about the girls' connection comes to light.

they better give a better explanation for her resolution other than she has to better job at most to be a good daughter for her father but she was a good daughter even before makeover or she is just embarrassed to return to most after all the things she told to Sung Joon that she went for her make over( that's not a resolution )better she wants to date shin hyuk so the make over (that would be a great twist its not is it)

Just need a little make over and she would still look stunning. And also the outfit. Why can't she just stay as tomboyish Hye-Jin with boyfriend's jeans and oversize jumper? They can just make a trendy bf's jeans and oversize jumper like they did with Eun-Chan in Coffee Prince. They never really changed her style dramatically, and she stayed as herself throughout the series. I don't really understand the need to fully changed her appearance here. #grumble

They made ugly Betty, pretty Betty. Even though I wasn't as invested in this show, I was hoping that they wouldn't do that. I agree with your insight on improving her looks without an extreme change in her taste/personality. To go from not caring about brushing her hair to investing money in perming her hair straight, facial treatments, and wardrobe change to get the look she has now seems out of character. It's not just a gradual character growth, it's overnight. This is why I don't buy into Cinderella stories. As fun as fantasies are, they make a drama disingenuous and flippant when it poses itself as a story about self-love and confidence.

What I did like about the show was the way that Hye-jin accepts herself for who she is. She accepts that she has a genetic rosy condition that she inherited from her father and that she chooses to be who she is regardless of putting on appearances (in terms of makeup and fashion).
However, to be fair, I viewed this makeover as a natural evolution for Hye-jin BECAUSE she works at Most. For example, in a previous episode in which she has an enlightening discussion with Ha-ri, she realizes she has been trying to work at a company without trying to understand its products and their customers. Therefore, at least to me, I predicted and understood why she'd choose to undergo a makeover--it's about putting more attention and care into her work and into herself.
We can physically see that Hye-jin is embarking on a new chapter of her life, both physically and mentally.

I agree, I think the make-over is timely for Hye Jin because she needs to start over.... Career-wise, relationship-wise and maturity-wise! I think it's all preceded by the need to help her father in his business so she's becoming more serious about her career and path ahead.
I am sad though because I loved her look and style before!

Dear Melleit and dear Beanies, please correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I have seen (I have 2 sisters and a whole happy bunch of female cousins which I adore), when a woman wants to leave something behind (like an ex, or a bad job) and finally make up their minds, they want to change and sometimes express it in a tangible way (like changing their hair color, getting a new cut or getting different fashion).
Please tell me if it is an overall female thing or if my bunch is an exception. Please tell me also if this is one of those "exorcize" makeovers or just her becoming more Most-like.

just a few questions though:
why do Cinderella characters have to change their physical appearance to indicate "personal growth" or as you say, "evolution"?
also, how can you tell that outward beauty is always an indication of a better character and not a "smokescreen" to hide one's insecurity?

Dear Anabear, my guess is that this is Korea's "Yo soy Betty la fea" (Ugly Betty) mixed with a very traditional First Love twist expressed in an unorthodox way.
Gwinna
October 10, 2015 at 8:31 PM
How can you tell that not caring about one's appearance means someone is being true to who they are and not that they have low self-esteem? Of course outward beauty isn't necessarily a sign of personal growth, but by the same token having a makeover isn't necessarily selling out. It depends on where it's coming from internally.
I get that there's this trend in dramas to have characters who aren't conventionally attractive become more conventionally attractive, and I'm not going to argue that it's not problematic. But I think it's also kind of problematic to judge a character for deciding that she wants to look more polished. Ultimately, if Hye-jin wants to change the way she looks, there's absolutely no reason why she shouldn't. Really, the problem here is that the writers didn't show us what motivated her, so we can't really know for sure whether it's a positive or negative change until next week.
anabear
October 11, 2015 at 12:34 AM
@Gwinna: yes, outward appearance is hardly the indicator of one's personality, but then, you still have to ask, why do some people have to care about their appearance? why do some people have to change the way they look?
it just leads you to more questions:
what kind of value do we place on appearance? where does the perspective of looking better = feeling good coming from?
you see, no makeovers are ever innocent. we can't say that transforming your appearance is mainly a matter of personal choice since there is always this "other" person (existent or imaginary) who will validate your transformation. after all, we don't really exist in a vacuum.
so there's nothing wrong if a character wants to look polished or wants to change his or her looks, but we still have to examine that character's mentality or attitude about appearance, with hopes that it can provoke a lot of reflection about our society's standards of beauty. :)

Normally I would agree with you guys, but Hye-jin already had a sudden and not-fully-explained image change in her youth, when she went from her pretty, stylish preteen self to the frizzy-haired Hye-jin with unflattering clothes that we know. Although we might connect Hye-jin with her more recent style, straightening her hair and dressing in a more style-conscious way isn't actually a new thing for Hye-jin herself. So I don't think it makes sense to say that the way she was before represents the "real" Hye-jin and the other is somehow not true to who she is; she's just going through different phases of how she wants to present herself at different times in her life.
That being said, it would help a lot if the writers showed what made her want to get a makeover rather than tossing in a random scene with no lead-up at the end of an episode just for the sake of having a cliffhanger.

Hye-Jin was comfortable in her skin and confident too, she lacks poise in my opinion. Also Sung Joon made her extra sloppy. I think it has been well established so far. Honestly, we still haven't been given any explanation for why she changed her look. She was pretty before just not polished enough. So, how about we wait. In real life, scenario, most girl out there would love to look pretty. Its not necessarily about the what the world feels and more about how we feel so why criticize her for it.
And for once, Sung Joon, I could understand him. He has a traumatic childhood, difficulties growing up. Add to that, Ha-Ri's lies, Hye-Jin's confusing presence and work pressure and he blew up. The way he fired Hye-Jin may have been wrong but it was for the right reason too. She supposedly ruined a custom made couture, I think. Nobody in the magazine business would tolerate this kind of attitude. That dress was her responsibility even if somebody else ruined it, it was her direct responsibility. So, for once, Sung Joon gets a pass for me.
Shin Hyuk is love. I sincerely hope he gets the girl.
Ha-Ri, she can go to hell for all I care. Having a friend like her, who needs enemies.

Was she really confident? This is the girl who hid from her first love because she thought she wouldn't match up to his expectations, had her friend act as a stand in in her place, tell Shin Hyuk she was in a pathetic state AND ignore all his complements because 1) she can't take him seriously and 2) she just doesn't believe in herself. My point is: if she was so confident in her own skin she wouldn't have carried on the lie any longer. She's insecure up until ep 7-8. That being said, I feel the makeover wasn't just done for shallow reason because let's be real here. The show is also making a point through Ha Ri that looks don't equate to a happy life. I agree that this makeover for Hye Jin may represent hope, confidence and determination. I expect it to have been well thought out by our heroine.

I think she did that herself..the makeover I mean. Remember the father scene where one of his friends blames the daughter for not getting him a new printing machine...she realized that she ought to keep her job and take care of her family. I think she realizes that she no longer wants to be taken for granted and that she now wants to be in charge of things. She was once pretty and once used to do her hair!! She was pretty at a young age..so why not now?
The only think that makes me wonder is why she turned this way...puberty was mentioned and dad's business?? I have to go back and re watch the old episodes..The mum and sis look pretty and they portray her looking like her dad but what's with the jackson pants! Those got to go..she can look pretty with the acne and hair but not those clothes.

I think the show would make it a point to let us know that Sung-Joon already found out the truth. like most kdramas, it will linger for a while, pan at Sung-Joon's face while wallowing, or give flashbacks about moments when he realized Ha-Ri is lying, etc. but the show didn't give us that, so I'm assuming that Sung-Joon doesn't know the truth yet.
also, do you think Sung-Joon would just be oversensitive? I think he will be angry and hurt for quite some time. it may also serve as the story's turning-point, which seems too early in the series. :)

I'm with you on that. No way is Sung Joon going to figure out that two women he deeply cared about were totally lying to his face and then get over it immediately. I think the flashbacks they showed indicated all the similarities he is seeing in Hye Jin to first love Hye Jin and I think the reason he was so emotional was, like Shin Hyuk pointed out to him, because he has feeling for current Hye Jin. And it is particularly upsetting because he thinks he is supposed to be into imposter HyeJin, but he isn't because Current Hye Jin is the one he really has feelings for.
I'd bet a million dollars he hasn't figured out that she is his real childhood friend.

Obviously something for the next episode to get into. I wouldn't mind if he takes his time to do just that before he lets anyone know that he is on to them!

I don't believe he knows the truth either. I think he's genuinely falling for Hye Jin, so all the similarities she shares with his first love (who he knows as Ha-ri) are just throwing him for a loop. It's making him extra testy and confused and making him doubt Ha-ri even more, but there hasn't been a single moment yet where he legitimately seems to connect the dots, let alone forgives/confronts them for their lies.
Actually, I think it's pretty obvious how it's going to play out: Ha-ri's going to have to go to the hospital for her stomach pain, and he's going to see the two girls together and finally put the pieces together. In true k-drama fashion, the truth will come out with a bang, not a whimper.

Also, this is my first time watching HJE in a show, and she's my new Korean crush. Or maybe it's just the juxtaposition between her unkempt state and made-over state that appeals so much to me. Some people have posted the possibility that the last scene didn't really happen, though, so I wonder.

I didn't watch HJE's dramas until this year, and I wish I had before. I began with Incarnation of Money, then Kill Me, Heal Me, then Secret, and now this. I love her because I feel that for her, it really is about the character and the acting. I can't think of other actresses who change their appearance as much as she does. Not saying that actresses have to do it, but HJE does stand out for doing so.

When I saw the episode I was really angry about the makeover tbh, because it seemed out of the blue (and also I really got used to HJ look by this point, she was cute)..but now after reading the recap and thinking about it, I guess she got the makeover because of the conversation that she overheard (her father and the client).. and maybe that made her realize that if she will work at a big company she needs to look good... ??? This kind of motivation for appearance change I CAN accept :D

Yes! Why do people think she's changing for a guy? One, she doesn't like Shin-hyuk, who already likes her the way she is, so that's out. And two, she knows that Sung-joon, the guy she does like, likes her already. All his staring, his smiles, him doing nice things for her--she knows his feelings.

If she's decided to change her appearance to be more professionally appropriate, I hope they give her some fashion sense. Ha Ri has great personal style that is on trend and fits her personality, and she dresses completely differently for work (in a uniform that doesn't deviate for personal style apart from a choice in haircut). Hye Jin can dress as she likes off duty in her "Jackson" mom jeans and ill fitting sweaters if that's her personal go-to style, but for work, she should be studying those magazines that Ha Ri gave her to be more fashionable because that's the industry she works in.
I totally understand her doing the makeover as a sign of her taking her job seriously for the sake of her family. Not because of any man. Her self-image is so low that she cannot even hear Shin-Hyuk's confession, let alone accept it. She can only think that he's joking with her again, as he is wont to do.
So the makeover wouldn't be for herself (it wasn't a priority before) nor for a guy but for taking her job seriously. As shown in one of the early episodes, as in intern without a lot of money for clothes, she can wear an inexpensive alternative to the designer styles surrounding her and still look fashionable.

Oh lordy! Lollypop, I actually didn't catch that! When he had the whole flash sequence of the various things Hye-jin has done to prove that she's the real Hye-jin and he didn't say anything, I just assumed he's still in the whole 'let's keep him blind and stupid to prolong the plot phase' of the show. But you're right. That expression was betrayal. And what hurts the most for me is that he doesn't know that Hye-jin was not part of the continued deception. That was all Ha-ri, the frustrating, cowardly, spineless b***ch!
I do like the makeover though. Firstly because Hwang Jung-eum is gorgeous! And the only series I've seen her in have been Kill Me Heal Me and Secrets, and although she was pretty in them, she wasn't gorgeous. But seriously, I like the makeover. Why? Because things just get more interesting. Sung Joon has started liking the real Hye-jin but has been suffering some conflict and hasn't shared that info with her or even made it seem like he likes her. By the time he does resolve his issues, and allows himself to start pursuing her for real, she will just imagine that he's only doing so because she looks pretty now. Whereas, Shi-Kyung has already seen her as pretty before. And let's be honest, Hye-jin is gorgeous. She looks pretty without Make-up and bombshell with it.
Which brings me to my next question. I wonder who did her makeover. I would think Ha-ri, but that b***ch strikes me as the 'friend' who would advise her to not change herself because she's beautiful the way she is, blah, blah, blah. True words, but everyone watching would wonder if she means it or if she's doing so because she knows that with Hye-jin and Sung Joon's history, Hye-jin's sparkling personality and now her gorgeous looks, the guy doesn't stand a chance. So, I think it's probably our very own Editor-in-Chief, Rara. Think about it, Hye-jin looks very 'Most-like.'
And did anyone crack up as much as I did at Shi-Kyung's expression when he saw Jackson all cleaned up. I nearly died. *Rofl. Now all that's left is for Sung Joon to step outside and see the transformation as well.
Or it might all have been a dream and the next episode would start with Hye-jin waking up on her bed and looking like the Hye-jin we know, love and want to cuddle. Just saying.

Nice comment there, Itenoria. ?
But I hope this:
"Because things just get more interesting. Sung Joon has started liking the real Hye-jin but has been suffering some conflict and hasn’t shared that info with her or even made it seem like he likes her. By the time he does resolve his issues, and allows himself to start pursuing her for real, she will just imagine that he’s only doing so because she looks pretty now. Whereas, Shi-Kyung has already seen her as pretty before."
... sort of misunderstanding of Seong-joon's intentions doesn't happen; I'd find it a bit too unfair to him. And I can't imagine Hye-jin's (or his) looks would figure in the conflicts they have.
I think it won't happen either, because she seemed to know of his developing feelings for her pre-makeover and regretted wrongly judging him in ep 7. Also, I can't see the drama having Seong-joon pursue her without knowing the full truth, after which the main conflict would be his (and Hye-jin's wrt to Ha-ri) feelings of betrayal.

Oh true. She figured on their trip together that he's not the one to judge her on her appearance. But I don't know if I agree with him not pursuing her until he knows the full truth though. We're just eight seasons in, and I wonder if the writer is willing to reveal the truth right now. Although when I do think of it and Hari's shady behavior, I want everyone to find out presto! Hari needs the entire 8 episodes for the shit storm she's created.

I don't think Sung-joon knows for sure yet. We can't forget that Ha-ri already showed him the puzzle piece, and that, unfortunately, is more concrete proof than a memory or a comment made in passing. I feel he knows that something is off, but maybe he can't fathom why Hye-jin would deceive him if he is thinking that. I know that all the clues are SO obvious, but he has a mental wall that's stopping him from connecting Hye-Jin to Ha-ri. That darn Zeigarnik effect!

ia and also normal people don't think so suspiciously I know we find everything Ha-ri says and does to be suspicious because we know the truth but from Sung-joons perspective he's missed out on a lot of years, people grow and change . To him it doesn't make sense that someone would lie about being his childhood friend, what could they gain from doing that?

I'm starting to love this show more and more so I hope it doesn't go to a slump anytime soon.
The makeover at the end honestly disappointed me, buuuuut I hope the show writes it off as a one-time comedic thing.
I don't hate Hari, unlike most people. She's a good person, but she's finally found someone that treats her well, so it's understandable that she'll want to hang on to him for longer. Sure it's selfish, but aren't we all from time to time? She's still a great friend and I'll feel bad for her once the truth gets out there.

Just curious, here, what has she done to show that she is a good person or a good friend? The show has shown them having some fun times together, sharing a few beers, but is that enough to qualify for "great friend" status? She agreed, after some pushing, to lie for Hye-Jin and pretend to be her for that one meeting. So, she is willing to lie for Hye-Jin - but then, it is shown that lying may be uncomfortable for her but she does it all the time.
Rather than just supporting her friend's Really Bad Idea, a "great friend" would have gone to Sung Joon, announced who she really was, and would have a) told Sung Joon why Hye-Jin was nervous about meeting him and b) would have given the fully orchestrated, technicolor version of why Hye-Jin is such an awesome person and c) would have set up another, more comfortable meeting.
But then, we wouldn't have had all of those foolish lies to drag this story forward for 10 episodes.

She's a great friend cause she has been through many things with her. Their friendship has survived many things over the years: her mum leaving her, her friend moving down the social class and what not. They could have easily have broken their friendship but they didn't.
She always kept pushing Hye Jin and encouraging her, is that not a sign of a good friend?
She was going to tell her at the start, but she didn't want to freak Hye Jin out, who was already having a tough time at work. But then when she started developing feelings for Sung Joon, it got complicated. She got selfish and she recognises that and she feels bad. We can see that she realised her lowest point was when she stole that puzzle piece. She's clinging on to what's giving her joy at the moment, but she's doing it all wrong.

I agree. There is a lot of hate for HaRi being written, but a lifelong friendship like HyeJin and HaRi's should be able to withstand the lying as long as the lying ends and HaRi gives Hye Jin a sincere confession and apology. I've loved HaRi from the beginning, especially her friendship with Hye Jin, but she has made bad decisions after falling for Sung Joon. I can understand Hye Jin's character and see future forgiveness as a positive character trait, not one of weakness. Especially since it was HyeJin's idea to have HaRi pretend to be her in the first place. Also, Hye Jin knows everyone around HaRi has abandoned her, and despite the lies, Hye Jin will not do the same and abandon her friend, even if HaRi has made mistakes that have hurt HyeJin and Sung Joon.
There will of course be fallout, but after the truth is out, is it really such a bad thing that HyeJin forgives her BFF?
HaRi knows Hye Jin was Sung Joon's first love, but she is conflicted. Also, she doesn't know that Sung Joon is falling for the real Hye Jin. She wants to do the right thing by her BFF but she also wants to feel cherished and loved by the nice guy Sing Joon that she has fallen for.
It's Sung Joon who will feel the brunt of the lying and betrayal when he is told the truth, whether he's told first or figures it out on his own. Unlike Hye Jin, his personality and character is to lash out, not to forgive. I feel sorry for him and for HaRi.

I don't think he found out YET actually. I've watched this episode a couple times cause I loved it a lot haha
You can tell Seong Joon isn't in love with Ha Ri and she feels like a total stranger to him. But since he doesn't love her, he's going through so much inner turmoil. He's totally in love with the real Hye Jin and because he doesn't know the truth, that makes him feel so guilty.
That adds onto the point that he sees so many parallels that connects the real Hye Jin with the one from his memories. But since Ha Ri solidified the "fact" that she's his childhood friend by showing him the puzzle piece, that makes him feel incredibly confused.
He doesn't know that Ha Ri and Hye Jin are friends, or even know each other. He's getting all these clues, but they don't make coherent sense as a whole to him. From his POV, I can see why.
However, I have a feeling he'll figure it out soon and I honestly am so excited for this week's episodes ~

Agreed. I'm surprised so many people think Sung-joon is stupid for not figuring it out yet (although I sympathize with the frustration). Because honestly this situation, where one girl is lying that she's not Hye-jin and the other is lying that she is, is the kind of thing that happens in dramas, not in real life. Even if it crossed his mind, he would rule it out as a crazy conspiracy theory, because he doesn't know there's any connection between the two girls. That's precisely why he's so confused, because his feelings are telling him something that doesn't make rational sense considering the evidence he has. It would be a huge leap in logic if he came to believe that Hye-jin was the real Hye-jin at this point.

I don't think SJ figures out that she's Hye-jin, but i think i can partly understand his frustration at all the hints that she's more HJ than the one claiming she's the real Hye-jin.
I love Shin Hyuk, you can see he cares for Hye Jin and even though it was for a short period they became friends pretty fast, that the interest and feelings were very organic and it's a healthy love... i would love to have a friend like him and with SW's i would dare to get into friends with benefits territory if not, the second syndrome is taking over me with every single episode. Can't Hye Jin and Shin Hyuk become the main couple in the end??? They are so great together

Lol. Yeah right. There're so many dramas where the character is looking at something else, usually the person beside him and I'm all shouting for them to look straight ahead, terrified that they would crash into something. When that doesn't happen, I breathe a sigh of relief, then in the next moment, wonder how realistic it is that they didn't crash. Like there's no one else on the road?!
Oh, I can definitely get into friends with benefits territory with Shin-Kyung. As in, look at those dimples. His goofy smile. The way he switches from goofy to serious in seconds, then back to goofy. The way he's so quick to defend Hye-jin to Hari and Sung Joon. The guy is amazing, and shall be indoctrinated into my Second Lead Hall of Fame. Not crowned though. I'm not so sure he knows. I mean he should there is everything but a neon sign pointing out that HJ is THE HJ. I don't think he would of just not of said anything. He was alone with her at a playground and didn't ask her anything. I'm thinking he's still in the dark.

Seems like most of us aren't convinced he knows and I think we're right on that. Episode 9 will tell. But I feel like if he knew, things would have progressed very differently.

This is what I think: Sung Joon got angry at Hye-Jin because she utterly confuses him - she seems more like his Hye-Jin than Ha-Ri. And he wants to love Ha-Ri. But he can't keep thinking about Hye-Jin. And because he can't express any of this directly, he just gets angry at her.

I dont think SJ knows that she's his HJ. Otherwise, he would have talked about it in the kids park or the show would have added scenes him having internal conversations or more flashbacks.
I'm a bit disappointed that she had a makeover, it kinda dilutes the inner beauty premise. Hopefully she'll go out with SH and give SJ the hard time he deserves. :)

Ha ri is hateful because she doesn’t even try to resist her feelings , where is that noble idiocy when it is needed ?
at least try a bit to overcome those feelings for the sake of your bestie instead of running a head to SJ and confessing her love ? that is the frustrating thing
Siwon is no joke , and his chemistry with HJE is no joke either that it can beat her chemistry with PSJ

I'm not thrilled with Sung Joon here, but when I think of things from his perspective, wow - he must feel like he's going out of his mind. Complete lack of Americanisms aside (...sigh), if you take into account that Sung Joon lived in the US from the age of 12, that is one hell of a culture shock coming back (the guy who runs he Ask A Korean has roughly the same backhistory, and he sometimes comments on how insanely different it can get).
Sung Joon's been in Korea around a month now, and having moved around a bit, that's when the real culture shock starts to seep in - it stops being fun and new and starts screwing up your everyday life. Even if you know the language, a low-level frustration starts building up: why can't the bank do an electronic transfer like they do at home? Why can't you find a good place for taco ingredients? Why does the "unscented" detergent you bought make all of your clothes smell very slightly scented? Did you just get screwed by the internet provider? Why do they only sell garlic in long strings, so I can't buy just one? Why do vending machines only accept coins? Why does everyone else know this stuff and act like it's totally normal WHEN IT MAKES NO SENSE! ARRRGH! All of it on its own sounds small and petty, but it stacks up.
So there's the everyday stress of culture shock. Add that to having absolutely no support network, and then the stress of his American bosses breathing down his neck, and the Italian primadonna flouncing around. And THEN, on top of THAT, you add this shell game that Ha Ri and Hye Jin pulled.
I know Ha Ri is more at fault for actively perpetuating the con here, but I am actually getting increasingly ticked at Hye Jin for drawing this out a whole month. Even though she doesn't know about Ha Ri, she's in his orbit every day, and even though she doesn't intend to, she's throwing off all of these signals that are completely confusing him because SHE'S HYE JIN. At this point I'm kind of hoping he's figured the identities out, because otherwise, he must actually think he's going insane! We know he's in therapy, and now he's going to wonder what mental illness results in you hallucinating your girlfriend's traits onto another woman with the same name. Good lord.
And he's not eating, so there's that.
I want Shin Hyuk to take him out for a long walk and then street food. The guy needs a non-crazy person to talk to, and bizarrely, the best candidate around is Shin Hyuk.

Writer-Nim, please have him figure it out soon, or have someone tell him fast before he goes totally out of his mind. But then again, I remember all the crap he told Hye-jin when they first started working together (e.g. someone like you is not worthy of the name) and I want him to suffer some more. *Shrug.

If you see Shin-Hyuk closely, he is more like a Sage disguised as a Fool. His insights are pretty deep and his analysis are very spot on.
I didn't thin of Sung-Joon as having such a cultural shock and having a hard time to adapt, and those ladies turning him upside-down must be another source of stress.

I totally agree Sung Joon saw his mother's death in front of his eyes seeing how he grew I don't think He had reliable father ,inferiority of being fat also with bullying in foreign Land. I can see his world categorized into Kim Hye jin and non Kim Hye Jin people and built wall around him and these two girls made his only support and good part of his life into the biggest joke of his life.
Shin Hyuk should do something a little bad(So I can justify Hye jin with sung Joon) and Ha ri redeem your self so much that you can be a match to shin hyuk (Because they can't randomly add a character for shin hyuk)
Because I Don't want a troubled and Rain terrified childlike Sung joon to be with a spoiled rebelling brat like Ha ri .He needs a soothing adult like Hye jin And I definitely don't want shin hyuk to end up alone .

I get frustrated too with Hye Jin, like seriously, girl, don't you see something is very wrong with your so called BFF? When Ha Ri and Hye Jin were at the park playing swing, and Ha Ri looked so uncomfortable and guilty, anybody with their right minds would see that she is holding some deep secrets everytime a certain name is mentioned, and if their relationship is anything like they boast about, then it would be natural for Hye Jin to actually suspect that something is fishy.

I finally stopped liking Ha-ri in this episode. :(
Seeing the pain and chaos our leads are going through due to her on-going deception (not letting Hye-jin off the hook for initiating it in the first place either), and Ha-ri just simply finding excuse after excuse not to come clean, but instead wallowing in that toxic mix of guilt and self-pity (is that what is causing stomach aches) was actually infuriating.
I just don't understand how she could even enjoy herself with Seong-joon on those dates? It's all a lie, his expression is blank and his eyes look dead throughout; I mean, she's sacrificing her conscience and her friendship with Hye-jin for this? What?

I hope the chemistry between Ha-ri and Sung-joon is filmed so that it feels forced. She’s forcing it, he’s forcing it, so they just look awkward on-screen. As much as I cringe watching their scenes, I love it at the same time because I feel like I am supposed to feel that way. The kiss? Awkward. His long, hesitant silence in response to her confession? Super awkward. The movie date? Yeah. I don’t think he is intentionally leading her on. He wants to want to be with her, but he can’t admit that his heart’s not in it. He’s envisioned this life with Hye-jin for a while now, and he can’t imagine letting it go. All that waiting and pondering has to count for something, right?

I think it's kind of sad for Ha-ri when you think about it. She knows he doesn't like her, but because he only knows her as Hye-jin, that's all she has. So of course she's going to hang on until he tells her what she doesn't want to hear.

Thank for the recap.
I'm not shouting below. I'm just differentiating the voices.
Well, I’m conflicted about Hye-jin’s makeover. NOT CONFLICTED AT ALL
One the one hand, she looks amazing. SHE LOOKS STANDARD.
On the other hand, I didn’t think she looked bad before, just a bit unkempt at times. TRUE
But the curly hair wasn’t so terrible, other than needing a bit of styling, and her freckles and rosy cheeks were downright endearing. TRUE
I’m sort of frustrated with her for buying into the whole makeover idea, though I can’t really fault her for it, because people weren’t taking her seriously. TRUE. I FIGURE THE SPONSORS NEED AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW OFF THEIR PRODUCTS.
She never required them to, and just let them walk all over her, but that’s a different complaint. TRUE.
I suppose I just should wait for her explanation as to why she did this now, since I don’t really understand what motivated her to do it at this point in the story. I'LL WAIT WITH YOU BECAUSE I DON'T GET IT EITHER.
But… she does look gorgeous. SHE LOOKS ORDINARY K-DRAMA ATTRACTIVE.
* * *
Right now I'd only be into the makeover if KIm RaRa kidnapped HJ at lipstick point (at the suggestion of her unidentified nephew) and made HJ become 'buona' and most MOSTlike.
Of course that is be a very understated makeover coming from the mind of Kim RaRa.
-I'm not sure HJ had a makeover.
I was curious why the image of HJ was shrouded in 'glamour' (in the magical sense). I wonder if HJ may not have a makeover/change but to the staff who are in dire need of her help she looks like an angel--and to those working in the fashion world sparkley with straight hair is what angels look like.
So, I wonder if how she is seen by the staff is a manifestion of how they now value her.

I think the projection of value hypotheses is inlikely and very un-kdrama, but I'm going to run with it until episode 9 proves me very wrong, as it will.
I know that how I see/ evaluate people's aesthetics is directly related to how I see them. I find beauty all people I respect regardless of their features. Strangers who i saw as beauty, beauty evaluation drop if I meet them and find them to be unpleasant.
If HJ new 'glamour' is about how her co-workers now see her it would make perfect sense that to SH she was always beautiful, more beautiful than HR, because he always saw HJ's value.

i laughed so loud at the "if KIm RaRa kidnapped HJ at lipstick point " comment. :)
But Kim Rara always tells her to be more MOST like, but maybe she means, be the most you can be for yourself? After all Lady Bongiuorno has a far out style of her own but that's her style and it reflects her personality.
Maybe she is telling HJ to find her own voice and express it in her style, whatever that might be.

The makeover! I love her before look so much. It’s so Hye-jin, that I’m sad to that look go. Normally, I don’t like makeovers in kdramas, but I don’t mind this so much because 1) Hye-jin did it on her own terms (any other show would’ve had her makeover done by episode 4), 2) both male leads have already fallen hard for her, so it’s not like her new look would make them want to be with her more, hopefully, and 3) Hye-jin works in fashion, so it was long overdue, I guess.
She is stepping back into this job after being fired, so I think it makes sense that she'd change something about herself. It's human nature to want to keep improving ourselves, whether that's on the inside or the outside. There's nothing wrong with that. How we feel about our look is in relation to our confidence. If Hye-jin is going to be working at The Most again, and her idea is the basis of their 20th anniversary issue, I'd say she's well-aware how much pressure is on her. Looking Most-like will help her relax a bit, I think. To play the part well, you have to look the part, right?
Ultimately, I love Hye-jin for who she is as a character, and as long as that doesn't change, I'm fine.

Yeah, I think the makeover is positive because it's been shown in this drama multiple times (her dismissing Shin-hyeok's compliment, and chastising herself for believing that Sung-joon would look at her because he's attracted to her) Hye-jin's self-esteem wrt to her looks has fallen as low as thinking she is immutably unattractive.
While she's shown to make multiple efforts if necessary and succeed at most aspects of her job, she just made one half-hearted attempt of looking Most-like and immediately gave up attempting again after, why? She has a pretty distorted view about her appearance, IMO.
Mind you, this is a woman who used to wear chic clothes and diligently treat her hair as a kid, so it's not like it's out of character. It's the battering her self-esteem took over the years after not having the money to afford spending on such things that explains the difference of her present-day vs. past appearance and her care of it.
I think we'll seeing some character development with Hye-jin's makeover; I also hope they address her self-esteem issues and give more background of her years growing up after Seong-joon immigrated and her family lost their house and business. I'm thinking post-makeover Hye-jin will be less neurotic and easily embarrassed and more poised and self-possessed.

I actually don't think she thinks she's unattractive. I think she doesn't have a problem with her look, but next to Ha-ri, she's realistic about how society (in particular, men) would compare them. When Shin-hyuk called her pretty in episode 5, she simply accepted the compliment and thanked him. In this episode, when he said she was much prettier than Ha-ri, she scoffed and thought he was lying because she was not used to being the pretty friend.
For example, I feel pretty good about how I look. But during Halloween a couple of years ago, I dressed as Eliza Doolittle and my two friends dressed as Princess Jasmine and some sexy piratess or something. Guess who got hit on? Compared to my friends, I know that I'm not going to be the one that guys want (which is fine, because drunk guys = ew), but it's not something I dwell on or let define me. That's how I feel Hye-jin is.
With Sung-joon--all the stolen glances, the nice things they do for each other, the smiles, the ONION--she knows there's an attraction between them, and she knows it's not because of her looks (although he does find her beautiful). She feels a connection with Sung-joon that's skin-deep, which is why she feels compelled to tell him the truth.

IIRC, she sarcastically dismissed him as just trying to be "nice". I don't think she took him seriously, more like she thought he was just trying to comfort her. And hasn't she brought up that she "used to be pretty once upon a time" at least a few times now?

I agree. I thought the curly hair, rosy cheeks and freckles was endearing too. But I think Hye Jin realize that if she wants to be taken seriously and be a professional then she needs to look the part hense her new "Most like" look. I do hope they bring her curly hair and rosy freckle cheeks back though.
I don't think he knows yet but he does sense that she could be his Hye Jin but until he gets concrete evidence like say finding out Hye Jin & Hari are friends then he's still gona have doubts. Hari DID have the puzzle piece from their childhood days so unless the girls confesses. But then again I could be wrong be wrong. His out burst "why it is you!? Why is it always you!?" could be the writer way of letting us know he knows the truth. But I guess I watch too drama where the truth is mostly revealed by a voice over saying something like "she's my Hye Jin?"
So I guess we will find out in the next episode. I Can't wait! I love this drama so much! ??

I don't think SJ is dumb for not seeing the obvious, he does feel something's off - but it's not strong enough to make hiim catch on yet - since he has no reason to believe fake HJ stole real HJ's identity - it's not like this is a thing that actually happens to people, he's also not vain enough to think someone would go to such lenghts as to steal THE puzzle peace. He hasn't seen HJ for ages so it makes sense he would go nuts over the conundrum why "his" HJ has changed so much while a random stranger is so much more like the girl her remembered.
Everyone who has ever been cheated on and wonders afterwards how they didn't see the clues should understand him at this point in the story. He is going to need a major hammer of a clue to figure it out on his own. Of course all the actionable clues so far have gone to SH because of plot needs.

I have a whoooooole bag of doubts and concerns about this drama, but I'll just keep on watching it, because honestly, there's nothing better (to me at least) on Wednesday-Thursday timeslot now.
The only character I really really like and root for at this point is Shinhyuk, because he's simply the most relatable and 'real' out of them all. It's also because Siwon is acting the heck out of his character.
I just hope he'll not end up alone and forgotten in the end.
And what I have to pinpoint though is that She Was Pretty is one of the most clichied (sorry) dramas I've seen in a long time. Almost all of The Dramaland Rules apply here - fate, childhood connection, accidents resulting in dead parents, much-more-suited-than-male-lead-for female-lead-second-male-lead (sorry again), makeover, roadtrips and doing nothing during work etc. etc. etc. I could go on like this forever.
As I said, I don't feel any attachment to SWP as of now (excluding Shinhyuk) and considering it's already on its 8th episode I can't see myself harboring any.
But I'll keep on watching it, it's funny sometimes.

Contrary of what most of you think, I'm so glad she finally turned up to work looking proper! Her boss the ajumma already told her several times her look is not appropriate. In her other office everybody used a suit, and that doesn't mean they have makeovers every working day, they just wear their uniform. And in this office it's all about fashion, beauty products, etc., so at least at work she should look presentable, it's also another type of uniform. The rush on her face... I'm not saying she needed make up, but bbcream was almost mandatory.
You know, in my personal life I used to wear loose Tshirts to work when I was a Team Member, but as I started doing more office work I went to buy shirts and more suitable clothes . Nobody told ne, but I felt my image wasn't appropriate. And for me this also answers the question I read on the comments about "who made the makeover". Well, herself! She's not stupid, she's been reading and studying the last trends.
I hope in the next episode my ideas turn to be true, because I'm really happy she finally embraced completely her new job. I think she saw the other office as the serious one and this office as something more frivolous where she wanted to do well but that she didn't respect (maybe I'm over thinking it now :P)

If this was a continuation series from I Need Romance3, Sung Joon would realise by now that Hye Jin is 'his' Hye Jin but it would be too late for love to bloom cause he's been an ass one too many times for any romantic feelings to develop between them. They'd maybe try to get romantic. But Shin Hyuk would end up with Hye Jin because she finally realizes that he's sweet, dependable and has her best interested at heart. Albeit slightly weird. She'll realise that he doesn't come with 'leftover' feelings and like her for who she really is and sees the goodness in her; inside and out.

Seriously, though. It's making me feel stupid. The makeover is so out of place and it will just solidify the notion that people will treat you better if you're beautiful. But it's not like anybody has treated Hye-jin badly because of her looks. Strangers, yes (like the guy at the restaurant, the guys on the bus, the guys at Ha-ri's party) but not the ones who are important to her. The Most staff recognize her contribution to their team and even bemoaned her absence. Her best friend is a goddess and doesn't treat her any less. Her best friends calls her "wifey." Shin-hyuk likes her because of who she is and thinks she's pretty already. And Sung-joon treated her badly early on because of her perceived work incompetence. He's treating her nicely now because he's falling in love with her (not her looks, but her very being).
Even her old boss, who hired her because of her lack of looks, appreciates her work ethic.
This makeover is for her, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I don't think he knows for sure it is her. The way he yelled at her during the photo shoot was more like out of frustration because she keeps getting involved with him when he's trying so hard to dismiss his growing feelings for her. It's like Coffee Prince.. he fired her not because of the mistake but because he's pissed that he's starting to love someone he shouldn't love (loving another man for Coffee Prince; loving the wrong Hye Jin for She was Pretty).
I am a bit conflicted with the makeover. Even though I wanted to see it, I think it's detrimental to the story/moral the drama is trying to tell. We the audience know that Sung Joon has started liking Jackson even before the makeover but she does not know that. If he starts openly showing interest in her now, that would just make him look more shallow. I think they should have held off the makeover until after everything has been revealed.

As much as I enjoy looking at Park Seo-Joon (and it's not his fault the way his character is written), from a relational perspective, Kim Shin-Hyuk is the better man for Kim Hye Jin at this point. Shin Hyuk liked her from the beginning and never spoke disrespectfully to her (even with the teasing about Coco.) I have to agree with Aranea's excellent observations regarding the lack of professionalism of The Most team.
So now, I'm torn with this drama. I got on board in the beginning because of Park Seo-joon and Hwang Jung Eun's chemistry from Kill Me Heal Me. There was so much potential there. But, in She Was Pretty, from a healthy relationship perspective, (i.e. mutuality, honesty), Shin Hyuk is the better man for long term husband material. Ji Sung-joon is moody, controlling, insecure, and has a bad temper, none of which bode well in a marriage.
Ji Sung-joon better have a really good back story for all this bad behavior. It helps that Park Seo Joon is such a good actor that it's written on Sung-joon's face that he's miserable when he's not actively pursuing Hye Jin. Sung-joon struggles with self-honesty. There is this double-mindedness in him that isn't in Shin-Hyuk. I'm pretty disgusted with Sung joon right now.
I too was disappointed with Kim Hye Jin's "transformation" at the end of the episode. Depending on how maturely they play this out will determine if I continue to watch this drama.

Well, this was the one episode in which I wanted to really slap several of the characters, like really - really hard! Seo-Joon, does have a lot on his plate, understandable on the tension front. He looses any gained points from ep 7 with his reaction to and firing Hey-jin. Hey-jin must, must stop being the floor mat she is and get a back bone when all the others abuse her desire/need to be helpful. Ha Ri got some points when she was there for Hey-jin's tale spin, but lost any gains when she thought of self only in rushing off to finally fess up to Seo-Joon about who she really is. Shin Hyuk just shined, in his caring and desire to help/protect Hey Jin. Who could not love someone with that type of attitude and cutie face?? BVDs? Got a bunch in the back room, free, stop on by! ;-)

Hye Jin kicked Most-like in the butt. I most love that she did it herself, and no one forced a makeover on her. I was so proud of her seeing her name in the magazine for the first time. She is competent and deserves her job, which is further proven by her fairytale characters idea. Sung Joon accidentally sliding down the slide was the cutest. Yay, he saved his Onion Head.
Every time Sung Joon blew up, I couldn't even get mad at him because he doesn't know he is being lied to. He is going to be so hurt when he finds out. It was big of that model to confess to ripping the dress after she witnessed Hye Jin unjustly being fired, but I was miffed gold-digging Seul never confessed to making Hye Jin move her car.
I don't care how much Hari cries, I don't feel sorry for her one bit. The only reason she was so frantic at calling Sung Joon is because she knew if he found out from Hye Jin first, he would be mad at her. Her confession is entirely for selfish reasons. While Hye Jin is genuinely rooting for her love, would Hari do the same for her? I love how Shin Hyuk kept rolling his eyes as Hye Jin praised Hari. My eyes almost fell out of my sockets with how much I rolled mine. A big thanks for the recap, LollyPip!

This drama definitely has it's faults but I'm so invested and I'm enjoying it ALOT! That's all I ask for kdramas in general as a guilty pleasure.
Hopefully we get a preview in the next few days!

Same here DebDami! The show is just killing it on so many fronts for me. It's doing so well on what it set out to do and I'm so happy about that.

What I found really interesting in this episode was that everytime Sung Joon was with Hye Jin and his heart wavered, he immediately followed it up by calling up Ha Ri to meet. It's like he constantly needed that reminder that the one he should be falling for is his "childhood friend" and not the adorkabke intern who worked for him. Hee.
One thing that confuses me though is why Hye Jin stopped straightening her hair. She said in the flashback that she had naturally curly hair and that's why she always had to straighten it. So it seemed like she did used to put a certain amount of effort into the way she looked. I wonder what happened in between that made her stop? Because if it's genetics, it only explains the sudden red cheeks. Why did she decide to stop dressing well and straightening her hair?

Her family went through some financial troubles not too long after SungJoon left. When your family is doing poorly, a girl as sweet as HyeJin would try not to ask for anything nice. Her hair might have been so bad she needed professional treatments to make it look straight and smooth instead of your average heat styling tools. And by the time her family started recovering (guessing it took a few years), Hye-Jin had gotten into the habit of not dressing up and fixing her hair.

Am I the only one majorly bothered by the fact that Hari tried calling Sungjoon first to explain everything as opposed to telling Hyejin the truth first? Shouldn't she put her friend first for her to really 'redeem' herself?

Ugh I know, I hated how she only cared about what Sung-joon would think of her and gaining his forgiveness, and didn't think about her relationship with her supposed best friend at all.

I agree , I don't think he has realized yet drama beans, he simply is seeing a stronger resemblance but he still doesn't know. He didn't pick up Hari's call because he wasn't in the mood to talk, plus I think he called her back.

I have serious SLS! I absolutely love Shin Hyuk and his complete acceptance of Kim Hye Jin. Like him, I thought she was beautiful before. To me, she had her own style or lack there of but it was unapologetically her. Not sure if my SLS is running wild but do you think the magazine having secondary characters placed in the spotlight and given a chance to shine as their anniversary theme is a metaphor or allusion to the second lead winning the girl this time? Pinch me if I'm crazy and just filled with hope.

hahaha, I'm with you on the SLS - SH is just too precious. But since both leads are already in love with each other, we really don't have a leg to stand on this time (unlike in other dramas). So I'm gonna be happy for the main couple. As long as second leads don't get bundled up together in the end this time - if HR and SH end up together I will throw something!
I think HJ came up with that idea for the magazine because she thinks of herself as supporting character who deserves the spotlight too - so I hope she will start to do something about that now. I hope that's her reason for the makeover 'cause no, she didn't really need it.
Stylewise: It is actually entertaining to me that HJ supposedly has no fashion sense, when most of what she was wearing - particularly the tomboyish silhuette is spot on trend at the moment. Her look was just a little to simple to look really stylish ("most-like") - and the fact that she can't really pull off those jeans with her frame doesn't help. That blouse from the makeover scene however is not exactly a fashion break-through - and it looked very simlilar to what HR wore - please don't...

I know that I am watching Korean drama, which is notorious for being unrealistic. Therefore, any connection with the reality should be toned down while I am investing my time in them. But, when I am watching She Was Pretty, even though it is a no-brain pleasure, I still get itched seeing what the drama is depicting.
The Most is so unprofessional, from the boss to the intern. The boss is moody, violent, verbally offensive and has no skills whatsoever in leading the team. He fails to speak up when the team members commit unethical acts in the work place, publicly shouts at his employees, does nothing to connect with the team and lets his personal life interfere with his work life. Considering he is raised in America, I see he bears no trace whatsoever of American culture (I really think Korean shows need to stop worshiping America in their shows. And if they do, they should do it right by studying the culture first). I am saying Hye-Jin is unprofessional because she doesn't follow the office dress code by being the only one wearing jeans, or hoodies. When you are accepted as an intern and you really want to keep it, the last thing you do is not following the dress code and acting clumsy like a kid (shouting in the office for example). I don't care if the show is trying to show that she is ugly. Being ugly and being careless are two very different things. As far as I know, Hye-Jin isn't sensible, and that makes her unfit for this job.
But commenting like this is way out of line, because not only is SWP a Korean drama, it is also a romantic comedy. She was Pretty just makes any mistake every other Korean drama makes. Recently, when I see how Korean heroes are depicted, I am glad because there is some change that makes them very different from the typical hero (like Yong Pal, he is not violent and not trying to act cool). Seung-Joon, sadly, is just the typical one. I honestly hope he won't hit people or being disrespectful again.
Yet, I agree to look over those flaws because well, I want to be emotionally invested. The chemistry between our two leads are perfect. I love the small, tiny details that make them seem so fit for each other. The conversation they had, the way she thinks for him, and the way he says sorry when he is wrong. It is slow, but that what makes me buy the romance.
As for the makeover, I want to wait until the next episode to see the reason for it. The reason is very important, because it determines whether this is a thoughtful, or shallow show.
She was Pretty reminds me of this "5 centimeters per second". Well, but 5cps isn't as unrealistic as SWP haha.

+1 you are very articulate. I love how you put it because realistically speaking it was painful in the first episodes seeing Hye Jin act so hopeless when I'm so confident that she is more capable than anyone gives her credit for. If it was the real world she would have been fired eons ago. However, realistically still, this is a Korean drama and I'm enjoying myself so much. I really am looking forward to the next episode because we'll know where to go from there on.

I really liked HaRi in the beginning and was understanding of her falling In love with SungJoon and wanting to keep up the charade. But it's been several episodes now of her looking conflicted and upset. I'm finding her tiresome now. Can't even be mad at her because she's more stupid than evil. She knows her thing with SungJoon is also temporary, so why sacrifice a lifelong friendship? Why torture yourself for it? SungJoon isn't all that great (don't think I've forgotten about his behavior in the beginning!), and I hope the girls won't let him destroy their friendship.
I don't get why kdramas will allow two likable male leads, but only one likable female lead. I was hoping to see hari fall in love with ShinHyuk and get two awesome couples. It's not like the writers don't have other things to cover, like the deal with HaRi's family and why ShinHyuk is working at Most and living in a hotel.

I had kinda wanted to see the whole makeover process in an episode (I like beauty & makeup stuff ^^), but now I like that Hye Jin is gonna surprise everyone w/ her new look! :)
I hope the drama shows that Hye Jin did the makeover for herself and that it was her choice to be more professional in her career, but not make a big drawn out issue about it.
