She Was Pretty: Episode 13

Just because one conflict is resolved doesn’t mean it’s smooth sailing from here on out. Despite finding happiness in one quarter, we’ve still got more obstacles in store, and important lessons still to be learned — like knowing when to shoulder burdens alone, and when to lean on others.

EPISODE 13 RECAP

Lying in Sung-joon’s hospital bed, Hye-jin finally gives him that hug he’s been asking for. He caresses her face, gently wiping away her tears… and he kisses her.

Hye-jin complains about Sung-joon working himself into collapse, but he claims to be fine. He notices she’s wearing his scarf, the one he left on the dog, and Hye-jin asks when he came to her neighborhood. He admits hovering near her place last night, but that he restrained himself from waking her.

But he says that he won’t restrain himself anymore — not from liking her, or missing her, or wanting to hug her. Hye-jin goes in for another long hug, and Sung-joon’s expression looks peaceful for the first time.

Suddenly, a shrill voice rings out — it’s Chief Editor Kim, dressed like a cowgirl today, come to fuss over Sung-joon. By the time she enters the room he’s sitting up in bed alone, reading a book, while Hye-jin hides in the closet, heh. But her nervous habit of clacking her teeth nearly gives her away, until Sung-joon pretends it was him, having a chill.

That just makes Chief Editor Kim want to hold him to warm him up, so he claims to have a hot flash, and then she tries to strip him. She calms down and tells him not to work himself to death — Most will be fine, and she’ll support him. She nearly gives away her nephew who works there, but stops herself just in time. She gives Sung-joon the most awkward kiss ever, tells him his hospital gown is un-Most-like, and leaves with a lascivious wink.

Sung-joon finally frees Hye-jin, remembering that this isn’t the first time she’s hidden in his closet. He gets that look in his eye and leans in as if to kiss her, but stops to giggle at her face when she squinches her eyes closed in anticipation. He teases her, gasping in mock horror that she thought he was going to kiss her, calling her a kissing maniac.

When she cries that she totally was not thinking that at all, he gives her a quick peck anyway, and one on the forehead, and the cheek. It disarms her, and they smile at each other adorably.

The next day Hye-jin invites Ha-ri to dinner at her parents’ house — it’s their wedding anniversary. But Ha-ri’s former coworkers are throwing her a farewell party, and she can’t make it.

Hye-jin finds herself in the elevator with Shin-hyuk at work, where he seems back to his old self. He makes a fart noise in the full elevator and blames it on her, twice, and he’s happy when she yells at him — he wants them to be friends like this. Awww, he doesn’t want to lose his dongsaeng. He tells her to let him know if Sung-joon doesn’t treat her right, and he’ll scold him like a true oppa.

Downstairs, Sung-joon is absorbed in his tablet and walks into the glass elevator door, landing right on his butt. He grins when he sees Hye-jin already at work, and wishes everyone a hearty Fighting! for the first time ever. The staff all wonder what’s up with him, and it’s Poong-ho who says that Sung-joon acts like someone who’s dating.

Hye-jin drops the clothes she’s arranging when they speculate on what kind of woman would date him. She takes Sung-joon his mail and shuts the blinds, warning him to be discreet — people are onto him. He’s not worried about them finding out about the two of them, but he asks her how he should act.

She tells him to be snotty and rude, and get mad at people a lot, and he pouts that his little feelings are hurt. Hye-jin leaves, reminding him not to drink too much coffee, and to be rude, and not to drink too much coffee. She’s adorably bossy, and Sung-joon snickers at her back. He’s a total smitten kitten.

Hye-jin admires Sung-joon during the daily meeting, remembering that he was bad at speaking to groups as a child. She sees the young Sung-joon studiously rolling up his sleeves and tee-hees out loud, and he tells her to focus. Well, she did tell him not to be too obvious.

The whole office think that Hye-jin acts like she’s dating, especially since she’s the obvious one with all the skipping and singing she’s doing. She congratulates Sung-joon on throwing people off with his fake scolding, but he seriously says that he did it because she deserved it. She snarls at him, and again he snickers at how cute she is.

Poong-ho gets a copy of mystery writer Ten’s new book, which everyone is dying to read. He agrees with Joon-woo that the author must be a forty-year-old Korean ajumma, since the book is set in Korea.

They speculate on why the author goes by the pen name Ten, but Chief Editor Kim has an interesting thery. She thinks it’s meant to be a phrase that means “here it is” in Spanish, which makes everyone wonder how she knows so much about it.

In the restroom Chief Editor Kim calls her nephew and agrees to meet him that afternoon, which Seul overhears. She waits in a cafe across the street to see who the mystery nephew is, but her coworker Ah-reum catches her and drags her back to the office.

The nephew shows up, but of course he’s hidden from our line of sight by a potted plant. Kim mentions that he’s to be made Director and wonders if that means he’s coming back to live at home.

Sung-joon pretends to collapse again when he hears that Hye-jin can’t go to dinner because of a family obligation. He offers to at least drive her, and they linger outside the print shop, holding hands and playing the “you go first” game. Sung-joon pulls out his best pout, until Hye-rin sees them holding hands and shrieks to her dad and the world that Hye-jin and that oppa are dating.

And so Sung-joon is invited to dinner, and is immediately adopted into the family. They all push the choicest bites on him, until Hye-jin finally barks to leave the poor guy alone to eat. The attention seems to make him a little uncomfortable, but he plays along, even when they invite him to be in the yearly family picture.

After dinner he assures Hye-jin that he had a good time, and he sends her back in with a sweet kiss on the forehead. He turns to go, and finds himself face-to-face with Ha-ri for the first time since finding out that she’s not Hye-jin.

He asks to talk, and she apologizes for everything she did to him. In turn, Sung-joon apologizes for not staying to listen to her that night that he found out the truth. He sends her in to see Hye-jin’s family, seeing her off with a handshake, and says that maybe they could have been friends if things had been different. Ha-ri tells Hye-jin about seeing Sung-joon, and their talk.

Sung-joon calls Hye-jin while she’s brushign her teeth, and decides to do the same thing while they’re on the phone. She tells him that Ha-ri stayed at her parents’ for a few days, and they continue to talk about everything and nothing as they putter around doing homey chores.

While still talking, the doorbell rings, and Hye-jin opens the door to find Sung-joon there on her doorstep. He notices her clean face without the covering makeup, but she forgets her embarrassment when he brings her the red bean pastries she was craving earlier.

They snack in his car and talk some more, and listen to their song, “Close to You” by the Carpenters. They both fall asleep in Sung-joon’s car, and wake to realize that they’re late for work.

They manage to make it to the office, and today Hye-jin goes to visit her old admin services coworkers. They ask if she’s coming back in three weeks as originally planned, excited to be getting her back, though Hye-jin isn’t happy at the reminder.

Back in the Most office, Joon-woo finds proof that Ten is Korean — they confirmed it in response to a fan’s question. But they’re interrupted by a serious-looking foreign man looking for Sung-joon, who tells Sung-joon that he’ll be considered a failure if Most goes under. Sheesh, no pressure, ya big meanie.

Sung-joon tells the team that that was just his superior from the main office, making a courtesy visit. He tries to play it like it’s nothing, but he snaps at Reporter Cha when she asks if they should give up on getting an interview with filmmaker Leonard Kim. He pulls it back, and says that they need that interview to catch up to New Look.

Sung-joon silently freaks out in his office, and Hye-jin texts him to confirm that the man was here to discuss discontinuing Most. He assures her that things will be fine.

Shin-hyuk brings Sung-joon a USB with a short film that Leonard Kim made while in school, and tells him to come talk to him after seeing it. The movie should help Sung-joon when approaching him for an interview. Sung-joon admits his concern, and Shin-hyuk offers his help in whatever way he can give it, to the end.

There’s a rumor going around the office that Most will be shut down if they can’t reach number one with this issue, which causes the entire staff to semi-panic. Reporter Cha goes straight to Sung-joon for the truth, and he confirms it. She asks why he didn’t tell them, and he says simply that he thought it was the right thing to do.

But Reporter Cha is beyond understanding, asking what she’s supposed to do if the job she’s spent her youth on suddenly disappears. She feels betrayed that he’s been there three months and never let on how high the stakes are, not giving them a chance to prepare or work their hardest to save the magazine. She’s not wrong — she calls him arrogant and leaves the office.

The whole office is disappointed in Sung-joon, but Shin-hyuk says he was just doing what he though tbest. He urges them to all try their hardest, but almost everyone walks out in disgust. Later Hye-jin assures Sung-joon that the team is just shocked, but Sung-joon asks, with difficulty, to be alone today.

Sung-joon has another meeting with a different executive, though the woman doesn’t seen encouraged by his proposal for the anniversary episode. Even Chief Editor Kim expresses disappointment in Sung-joon, blaming him for the staff disappearing on him. If he had trusted and relied on them more, this might not have happened.

Sung-joon stays late at the office, plagued by regret. He finally goes to his car, only to find Hye-jin there, offering to drive him so he can rest. He turns her down, but she says she’s too worried he’ll collapse again to leave him alone. She knows the weight of his worries, and how hard of a time he must have been going through, and tells him not to carry the burden alone anymore – they can do it together.

Faced with the one person who isn’t blaming him right now, Sung-joon starts to cry. He pulls Hye-jin in for a long, grateful hug, and she tells him it’s going to be okay.

In the morning, both Shin-hyuk and Hye-jin mope into the office, expecting another long day of working alone. But they find the entire Most team there, bustling around, working their hardest. Reporter Cha says she came back because she felt wronged, but figured she would feel less wronged if she saw this through to the end, and the rest of the team agree.

Sung-joon walks in and calls a staff meeting like there’s nothing unusual going on, which confuses Hye-jin. But everything is forgotten when he announces that Leonard Kim has agreed to an interview. Everyone celebrates except for Shin-hyuk, who’s uncharacteristically sober.

In voice-over, Hye-jin says that there’s a Law of Luck, that says that the amount of luck you get is equal to the amount of misfortune you experience. The law reminds you not to despair, but remember that when bad things happen, good luck is coming.

The Most team goes out for a celebratory dinner, and Joon-woo notices that the upcoming Leonard Kim interview has been posted on their website and is already garnering lots of attention. Reporter Cha is impressed by Sung-joon’s landing the interview.

Shin-hyuk asks how everyone decided to come back at the same time, and Poong-ho says that Sung-joon came in person to beg him to come back. Apparently he did that with everyone, and they all vow to do their best and make the magazine number one.

Sung-joon goes to the office to work on the weekend, and finds a packed lunch with a note from Hye-jin sitting on his desk. The food is still warm, so he runs out to catch her, and yells at her through a glass wall to wait there for him. He asks her to stay and eat with him, and they go to a pretty park for a picnic.

He pretends to be distressed that she’s a cooking maniac on top of being a kissing maniac, and she spends the whole picnic making sure he eats well. When he goes to load the car, he takes his eyes off Hye-jin for only a moment, and when he looks again, she’s gone.

Before he gets too worried, Hye-jin sneaks up behind him, but he doesn’t laugh at her prank. She immediately feels bad, and reassures him that she has no intention of disappearing on him. He watches her while she takes pictures of the lake, and stares at her long enough that she notices.

She takes his hand shyly, and tells him not to run so hard — he’s almost there. When she sneezes from the cold wind coming off the water, Sung-joon wraps her in his coat while he’s still wearing it, and he says he wants to tell her something.

He admits that he’s impatient, and probably crazy… but he promises to save Most, and then he plans to propose to her. He pulls the hood of her jacket up to warm her face, and when she says that she wishes for him to save Most and be successful, he goes in for a kiss.

In their happiest moment, the Law of Luck kicks in in reverse, and back at the office Sung-joon’s forgotten phone begins to ring. It’s Leonard Kim.

COMMENTS

As happy as I am that Sung-joon and Hye-jin have finally found each other and are together (and they are perfect together), it’s a bit concerning to have the main romantic conflict of the show seemingly wrapped up so soon, and with three episodes to go. Can they really string out the whole Will Most be shut down? storyline for three episodes? That seems to be where the show is heading, and while it’s not a boring storyline in my opinion, it’s not really enough as it stands now to carry us through as satisfying ending. We all came for the romance! Hopefully, some new dramatic tension will spring up between Sung-joon and Hye-jin and give us something to watch besides a two-week tutorial on how to put out a successful magazine.

But meanwhile, smitten Sung-joon is just so cute, he makes my teeth ache. I like the way he teases Hye-jin, which feels very different from the way Shin-hyuk does it — Sung-joon never makes her feel bad, but teases just enough to get a cute reaction from her. And it’s good to see him letting her support him, because as much as I’m sure he’d like to, he can’t save Most alone. No matter how hard he tries, and how much he’d like to keep that responsibility firmly on his own shoulders, there’s just no way one person can make a magazine number one all by himself.

And it’s finally backfired on him. Though I agree it was a monumentally stupid choice, I can actually understand why he kept the secret from the Most team — he didn’t want them working in panic mode, trying too hard and changing things for the worse by accident. But in trying to do it all himself, he robbed these people, who have all worked for the Korean edition of the magazine for much longer than he has, of the ability to have a say in their own futures. They have a right to know the truth, and to know that even if they fail and Most is shut down, they did everything in their power to save it.

I think that despite his outward appearances, Sung-joon is pretty insecure, and he wanted to be the white knight on his steed, riding in and fixing everything by himself. Add in the immense pressure he’s under from his boss (which seems out of proportion… it’s all threat and no encouragement, and I wish they’d explain why it has to be first place or utter failure) to that desire to make Most successful singlehandedly, and this whole situation was prime for disaster. There was no way the Most staff was not going to take Sung-joon’s silence on their potential loss of their jobs badly, and feel hurt and betrayed. He didn’t even give them a chance to fight for their jobs, though one could argue that they should be putting in their best work all the time, anyway. But still, they should have been given the respect to know the truth, and be allowed to give it their all.

So for that reason I’m glad that they found out in time to at least give success a shot, knowing the stakes at hand. And I’m happy that Sung-joon is letting Hye-jin support and encourage him. It was an interesting callback to the time that he missed the twentieth anniversary party and completely blamed himself, facing the shame all alone — so that now when it happens again and he finds himself responsible for a terrible situation, he tries again to push Hye-jin away and go through it alone. But he’s not alone anymore, and Hye-jin said all the right things… that she understands him, and that he can lean on her. He may still make bad decisions in the future, who doesn’t? Thankfully, Sung-joon does have someone who believes in him, now that he has Hye-jin.

I'm also guessing SH is Ten as it's a meta joke given one of Siwon's Chinese nickname is "ten dollars" as that's what his name sounds like in Chinese.

The one thing I was expecting from Park Seo Joom was delivering a great kissing scene. And boy did he deliver! He needs to teach other actors how to do a proper kiss.

Agree! Why sweat it when all we can do is watch it.

On a good note love all the cuteness in this episode. Especially the parking lot hug..so much emotions in his eyes and hug. And thank you writer for giving us the kiss in the end. I love how he keeps looking at her contemplating if he should tell her his plan to propose. And how she responded to it was nice touch...saying that she do wish he succeed pretty much mean she is saying yes. I think that's why he gave her that deep look and kissed her:)

I'm already sad knowing only 3 more episodes of these two :( Please more cuteness to the end n a wedding!!!!

Did anyone else get a little freaked out at the BGM music played when HJ disappeared? It was, and I hate to say it, ominous, and jarring compared to all the 'worrying BGM' used (e.g. HJ's accident). The thing that freaks me out is that they /chose/ that BGM over all the others. And how he said 'I thought you'd disappeared', and proceeded to really stare at her as if she was still about to. I mean, it might be linked to his trauma with his mother, but it seemed like a serious concern (might be linked to when she was pulling away bc of HR?)

The only reason I can't buy the death endgame (or hoping I won't) is that the writers seem to be putting a lot of importance on Leonard Kim/secret nephew/Ten, and I doubt they can resolve all that as well as HJ's death. Hopefully. The next question is what LK was calling about (the interview!), why SJ didn't remember his damn phone, and if Ten can save the day. Or if the secret nephew can solve everything with a little money.

I think SJ is the nephew because I think the reason why chief stopped herself from completing the sentence about her capable nephew is because she knew that someone is in the cupboard and SJ looked worried for a second there, probably scared that HJ would know. And the hints about living with SJ's Aunty...

And I think Leonard Kim is SH because he had his first movie clip and that explains why he looked apprehensive after the cheers during the meeting. He probably hadn't want to reveal his identity but now forced to, just to save Most.

But then again, I'm not entirely sure.... ?

It's both fun and frustrating reading the comments. It's alright to love the second male lead but some got blinded with their SLS that they don't see the whole picture and not looking at the POV of both SJ and HJ.

HJ has been true to SH about her feelings for SJ since day one, from long time first love, frienship and present love.
Yes, SJ had been mean to HJ, but there was a part where HJ questioned what happened to SJ to be mean like that. She knew the SJ from when they were young, so she gave him benefit of doubt until she got to know the present him more.SJ is SJ. He wear his feelings on his sleave. And there are times when we crack from things piled up on us. That's why she understood and has overlooked his bad treatment coz she knew the trouble, pressure, bullying when young. And HJ is HJ. She was good and understanding then, she is now too.

With SH, SJ was right on when he said SH is a coward to hide his real feelings with his kokes and pranks. If I was HJ, Looking back his pranks and jokes, i just can't take SH seriously. HJ was serious about the dongsaeng thing, but coz she got tricked, when SH talked about his feelings for her, how can she take it seriously?

We only think from our POV as viewer who knew things the other characters don't. And our minds get clouded and start hating other characters. As many see SH's the perfect man, they don't consider HJ's feelings. Or see how layered Sj's character is.

If we take the POV of one character, take the POV of others too. Or just sit back and enjoy and watch how the drama unfold.

With the issue of Ten's identity, isn't his/her book called Memory?? This detail and speculations of twist and ending made me scared a little. Hope is romcom all the way.

Is it Wednesday already?

Oh, my ..

I never thought I could be so hooked up with a romcom before. I always thought that romcom was cheesy and too predictable. SWP is, well .. has all standard romcom formulas, but .. I dunno why, I still got hooked. All the leads are wonderful, plus the stories are also interesting and touching, even with the flaws.

Anyway, here is my guess :
- The nephew is Seong Joon. Why ?
-> he ignored Kim Ra Ra since the first few episodes. No mater how ridiculous she is, she is still his boss and the sister of the CEO. If they are strangers, would he dare to be that arrogant towards her on his first days at office ?
-> she has been teasing him several times. Then again, those teases could also work from a loving (eccentric) aunty to her nephew.
-> If he is the CEO's nephew, then it makes more sense if he can be a Deputy Editor at a young age. Yes, of course he is brilliant too. Perhaps, making the Most to be number 1 is a way to test him.
-> didn't he and Hye Jin live in the same neighborhood, in Ha Ri's house, when they were kids ? HJ's parents used to be rich, Ha Ri's dad is rich, so they must live in an elite environment. SJ's family should be, at least, comes from a rich family too.

- Dunno who is TEN. Perhaps it is Shin Hyuk or is it SJ's aunty ? I dunno why they mentioned SJ's aunty in epi 13. Perhaps it's a clue, or perhaps it's to distract the viewers.
I also suspect SH as someone else who was sent to that magazine for some mission.

Haha .. I really can't wait until episode 14.

Changed my mind about SH being Leonard Kim. I think he's Leonard Kim's son. :)

And Ten is the director.

SJ still the nephew.

It's quite fun to guess and my mind keeps changing! ?

First i love the acting of all specially PSJ, He can do emotional parts really well which i can't find with other actors. his acting are just natural, as everyone says car park scene is amazing.

About rumors that Hye Jin is dead: I don't thinks so as a Romantic comedy no one will die, but there will be some sad ending(like roof top Prince). but in this one i don't think so. if some one going to die it will be sung joon ( 90% he is about to collapse at any time - I wonder Actually PSJ is ok with continuous bumping and falling)

Major problem Nephew and Ten: I don't know who? Nephew might be Sung Joon and Ten is Shin Hyuk or chief editor. or some one in the staff. I wonder Ten is sung Joon.

at last i would name this drama "he was ugly"
ha haaaa i think it is matching because sung joon is really nice man now.physically and mentally.

Regarding 'he was ugly', is this the first drama with the main guy was ugly and became handsome ? Usually, it's the girl who is ugly and turns pretty ( like HJ )

The last few min of ep 13 gave me the shivers! goosebumps inducing, in fact. all that talk about the future and saving Most and then HJ's voice over about fate and luck running out or pouring down?! I am expecting the unexpected in ep 14 and 15 and then everything going back to where is was by ep 16. I find it really hard to believe that a drama with the title "she was pretty" would end up makjang and melo!! save that for "empire of gold" or "secret love". Ten is SH - I notice that he tries to look nonchalant but becomes more watchful each time the team starts talking about Ten. and likely that Ten and chaebol nephew are the same person? After all, Ten and nephew are both rich. And equally secretive ! However, I do agree that SJ has serious issues - obvious borderline personality disorder, control freak and orthorexia with caffeine addiction and extreme introversion. Not that SH is any better - since he is slightly psychotic , has a hyperactivity disorder, is impulsive (crashing bike in ep 11), and is an exhibitionist (likes to walk around starkers in apartments other than his own) etc. Must say that writer Nim really put a lot of thought into the 2 male leads such that they were not flat and 2 dimensional heroes or villians - thank you! In fact, more time was spent developing SJ and SH than HJ and HR.

Okay after long thinking i can match the pieces, If the rumors are really true:
Ten must be shin hyuk, if some one going to die it must be sung joon. shin hyuk always says that hye jin is pretty (her heart)
shin hyuk is writing this story about sung joon and hye jin's love.
few years later he will publish this book "she was pretty" he will accompany hye jin who is devastated with sung joon's death.
how is my imagination :)

This drama seems to have lost its initial spark. The love story in the drama between the main leads seems so manufactured for the sake of enforcing sweet moments before the dramatic storm in next episodes. You know, so they can pull those sweet flashbacks antic on the audience to sustain more episodes.

I wish the writer did not make SJ that unapproachable in the earlier episodes and showcase more scenes with him treating others as a decent boss and just a reasonable person. I get it that the writer wants to show us how much HJ means to SJ, thus, he can only treat one person (his first love) well...but that doesn't help us like him or understand his uber rudeness. So, when SJ is showing his romantic side to HJ...I cannot help but feel yeah...you are capable only of liking your HJ but treat everyone else poorly. It is not healthy and too one dimensional. Like when SJ is focused on reading his tablet, he walks into glass doors or drinks out of flower vases. He can only perform a singular task at a time or be nice to one person and only love his first love.

Hari and SJ dated for a while too..but the moment he realized she is not his first love HJ, he dropped her like a fly. If you genuinely spent time with a person in a relationship, don't you at least have to be extremely upset with Hari first? SJ dismissed her too quickly in my books. As a character, i think SJ is too absorbed with only one motivation, Hye Jin. He gains points being nice to Hye Jin now but he lost too many points at the beginning so he has not compensated for his rudeness.

Some of us work in large corporate with deadlines too...and especially in America, you don't survive with that kind of authoritarian attitude. I don't know if the writer sincerely thought bosses in America are like the mysterious corporate boss on the phone. Who talks like that here? Also, that seems too easy as an excuse for SJ to treat his team in Korea like dirt. Yeah, he is under lots of stress at work because he is talking with Lord Voldemort in the US Most headquarters.

I am curious if the writer forgot about writing a good male lead and focused only about writing HJ's character.

For this drama, I am still watching because i love the female friendship and bonding. I cried only when Hari and Hye Jin are having their heartfelt talks. Hari did bad things but the writer makes us well aware of her inner conflict as well as let us believe this is out of character for Hari. She has always been a friend/sister to Hye Jin. So, this one predicament is her only mistake throughout their sisterhood. I get the regret and guilt.

As for comedy gold, it is always the Jackson couple. Their comedic timing and chemistry is what makes this drama hilarious! Without those two primarily providing the comedy, this will be no comedy in this rom-com. Well, the panty couple is also winning to be fair. As for SH as a romantic lead for HJ~ I don't feel bad about them not being romantically linked but love...

love SH and HJ ‘s scenes together as friends and colleagues.

I have seen some folks genuinely confused with who is the main male lead character in this drama. So am I to be honest. I am not familiar with the Kill Me Heal Me cast at all. So going into this with no idea about the actors, i am confused when folks want them as a couple. If the actors weren't already predetermined as a couple and the viewers knowing they are the main leads, would this still be THE romantic couple? I wonder about that as a casual.viewer ...not as a fan of any of those actors.

This is the first time I THINK I understand the way the marriage proposal thing goes in K-land. SJ said "I'm going to propose". There have been several dramas where the couple are talking about marriage as if she's surprised and I'm like "Huh? Didn't you ask her to marry you about 5 episodes ago? But now you're saying you're proposing and she's acting like it's the first time she's heard of it?"

I THINK I understand it now that just because here in the U.S., if a guy says something even remotely that had the words "propose", "our wedding", etc., it's as if he did propose. I mean, I know it's not the down on one knee, ring in hand official proposal but...

Has anyone else ever been confused about The Proposal in kdramaville? Or can someone spell it out for me?

Shin Hyuk is the more healthy of the two men in Hye Jin's life from the get go. This is obvious. And this isn't a dysfunctional drama like Secret, so I'm pretty sure Shin Hyuk is the guy (and it's a relief because that leaves it open for another great drama with Park Seo-Joon and Hwang Jung-Eum at a later date).

I had this distinct feeling in episode 12 that Shin Hyuk was first lead when that red sports car (the Segimobile) turned the corner to pick her up and take her to the hospital. Remember, he also picked her up in that car when she saw Seong Joon and Ha Ri together, after she'd ridden in the bus to the end of the line. Shin Hyuk getting out of that car and forcefully putting her in it was a dead giveaway.

That car is a great symbol of Shin Hyuk's passion and masculinity. When he drove around that corner to pick her up, it was a very powerful scene because he was so focused on doing the right thing honorably. Watch that scene again. And there was a strong pull to Shin Hyuk when they were talking next to said car before she went into the hospital and then, she and Ji Seong Joon's first kiss wasn't passionate - it was Hye Jin being a caretaker. For me, if Hye Jin ends up with Seong Joon, it will prove that Korean drama writers are inherently more dysfunctional than I've given them credit for.

I don't think they've developed Kim Shin Hyuk's character to the depth that they have to let him watch Kim Hye-jin enter a mothering/rescue relationship.

A note about Park Seo Joon: He's fabulous and is so amazing that I've rooted for him periodically in this drama. He does intense and sad in a way that is very arresting. He's also amazing at conveying vulnerability. But the way his character is written he's not gonna get the girl. But that in no way diminishes his attractiveness or artistic prowess.

I don't understand why some people are utterly confused with how this drama will end up. It's been pretty logical thus far.

Like how it's fated for HJ to be with SJ. Whether it's healthier for her to be with SH or not, guess what you guys, she MADE her choice to be with SJ. She's already seen him in his vulnerable and unhealthy states, so whatever made you guys think she won't be with him now and in the future (if she witnesses another traumatic event) is just confusing to me. She's shown time and time again that she WANTS to be that kind of person in SJ's life. Whether it's healthy or not for her, she made the choice.

The writers are gonna do a hell of alot of convincing for HJ to all of a sudden choose SH, because this drama's about 81% done, and not once has HJ fancied SH that way.

So Agree.

I just don't understand how, after the story reached this far, there are still people who thinks that HJ will end up with SH. Since epi 1, the episode is about SJ-HJ. In the ending of epi 1, HJ and SJ's voice narrated the story by saying,"This is the beginning of the game to find the hidden picture" - or something like that, I didn't remember.

What I love about this show is because this is a romcom with mature people. Two guys compete for a girl, fair and square. Both are mature enough to learn from their mistakes and set their feelings properly. Having HJ with SJ doesn't mean that SH is less fortunate. He is still a noble and a kind guy. SH has helped HJ in her love, and he also has helped SJ to realize his own feeling towards her. Ha Ri has also realized her mistakes and becomes friends again with HJ. This actually fits the theme of the story, where the people 'behind the shadow' are the ones who make the star shines.

Well, of course, there is still a possibility that HJ will end up with SH. Then again, it (main lead ends up with the second lead) is very rare in Kdrama.

She has actually ONLY seen him in vulnerable and unhealthy state, and in rage most of the time, that's why I don't think she can REALLY be in love with him. I think she loves him as the old friend he was, that needed her protection as well.

She deserves better or at least he should undergo a massive personality development that makes him more desirable for outsiders like us.

No bitterness, though. We are only exchanging points of view.

She has not only seen him at his worst but at his best as well. Whether it was at the beach, at the bus stop, shoveling cow manure, or at the gallery, they shared good moments too.

Not only that, but she said a couple episodes back to SH that she likes SJ. She actually says to him, "I like SJ". So I don't know how much evidence you need, but it's clear from HJ's point of view that she loves him.

"She deserves better or at least he should undergo a massive personality development that makes him more desirable for outsiders like us." - And what makes you think she's unhappy? What in her mannerisms towards SJ or other people has made it look like she was not? I agree, she deserves better, but her willingness to accept SJ as he is and helping him in the future is to her, the best she could hope for. Happiness can be defined in diff ways to many diff ppl, and to HJ, her "happy" is being in a relationship with SJ, having fulfilling work at MOST, and being close to HR and SH again.

I would say the same for SH too, to me he's too crazy 90% of the time to the point where I can't take him seriously. I agree with HJ in that "he always jokes around". But he's nice right? Sometimes better does not always equal being perfect for that person. Maybe SH is perfect to us, yes, but to HJ? No that's not what she's looking for.

And I agree, while I don't agree with you, I respect your point of view as well.

Yup, agree. This has summed up everything -> "Happiness can be defined in diff ways to many diff ppl, and to HJ, her “happy” is being in a relationship with SJ, having fulfilling work at MOST, and being close to HR and SH again"

Anyway, I believe that SJ does have nice traits. For example is how he helped HJ in epi 1/2, when he told that Most girl to get out of the elevator and when HJ got a 'panic attack' in the elevator. Mind you that, at that time, he hadn't know who she was. And then, when HJ was driving him to the wrong airport, yes he was acting like a jerk. Then again, he realized later that he was the one who didn't listen. So, besides forgiving HJ (for what she said when she drunk), he also asked her to forget that airport incident. That means that he actually felt bad, but he was just too ashame to say 'sorry'.

Honestly, I think the writer kinda make his character a bit inconsistent in the beginning. Perhaps he/she wanted to show SJ's leadership in 'American style', so he became too harsh.

Thanks for being so nice by answering my comment. Not that my thoughts are anything special, but it's nice to share them here. About the second lead character my feeling is that if HS wasn’t going to be a character of such importance for the story, they wouldn’t have put so much content and weight into his description…

Together with the many hints and sentences expressing the role of the people who mostly aren’t noticed at first sight (peeping girl, 20th anniversary theme, and so on) that’s what makes this second lead special. That why we keep feeling this time something different will happen. It’s not unintentional, in my opinion.

I wonder what will happen in the end.

Sorry, English is not my first, second or third language, lol.

DID ANYONE ELSE HEAR ABOUT THE THEORY THAT HYE-JIN HAS ACTUALLY BEEN DEAD FOR A WHILE? I DON'T WANT IT TO BE TRUE AND I'M NOT SO SURE IT MAKES SENSE BUT IDK WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON IT?

I suck at speculating and figuring out things but I was left with an odd feeling at the ending of episode 13.
When Seong Joon was proposing and hugging Hye Jin, there was this look in his eyes that made me feel that he knew something bad or sad was going to happen in the future. I mean why the sad look? and why the almost "panic attack" when he didn't see Hye Jin for like 1 minute? idk everything is so crazy right now and I'm scared. And also why the sad look in his eyes when he was in Hye Jin's house, I didn't understand that feeling. I don't believe the theory of Hye Jin's death or whatever, but there's definitely something we don't know and Seong Joon does know and it's something that will happen.

I always thought that, after 3 months, he ought to be back to the States. That's why, he feels so sad (because he has to leave her behind) . Dunno, my guess is, when he had the intention to look for HJ, he never thought that he would fall in love that deeply to her. When HJ disappeared. he realized that .. hence, the proposal. Perhaps, he also 'falls in love' with her family as well, since he had lost his mother and he doesn't live with his father anymore, so it's kinda sad to leave them too. I hope this is the reason, and not because of his dying :D.

Haha, man .. never thought that I'd be crazy over a romcom :D . It's rare for me to like a drama without liking the actors first. I've known Siwon and HJM, but I've never knew PSJ before .. yet, I'm still hooked :p. Kudos to the writer.

I love the way the plot keeps developing. The chemistry between Sung Joon and Hye Jin is amazing. The most eye-catching person is of course my favooooourite choi siwon..:-):-)
I love the way his character is portrayed. To be truthful I started watching this series for the sake of choi siwon, but as the story goes by every character started to find their place in my tiny heart...:-) :-) :-)

Hello, where is the place/park that they had the picnic? and I know I have seen it before in another drama but I can't remember, does any one remember in which drama they shoot at the same park? Thank you :)

I actually like the pace of this drama very much. Might be the most strait forward approach taken in any drama I have watched so far: and I have watched a lot.

If they can pull the Saving Most story line nicely without going backwards on the romance part, I can live with it :D

What we have seen so far from this drama, they rarely goes backwards, so I am hopeful!

Ahhh.. reading so many theories and leaning towards one commentor's after another, my hair is turning frizzy like HyeJin's!

P.S: anyone having trouble coping with HyeJin's constant high pitch moments (in this episode, especially?). Just how many times have I lowered my tv's volume because of her. Somehow, I didn't find those moments cute/funny at all.
