Resurrection, Devil, Shark team helms new tvN drama
by girlfriday
The PD-writer team behind the revenge “trilogy” Resurrection, Devil/Mawang, and Shark (not a technical trilogy since they’re three separate stories) is headed to cable network tvN next year. Aren’t they all. They’re returning with a new drama called Memory, about a man who faces losing all of his memories… which is not to be confused with that other drama Remember, about a man with TOO MUCH memory. My brain, it hurts.
PD Park Chan-hong and writer Kim Ji-woo are best known for their revenge series, but have collaborated on a number of dramas over the years, including Fermentation Family/Kimchi Family for JTBC and the ’90s series School that’s been revived in recent years. Resurrection and Devil are considered revenge classics, while Shark didn’t quite live up to expectations. It was cerebral and looked beautiful, but it was also infuriatingly opaque, and I spent the whole series wishing Kim Nam-gil would be darker, or just better at the revenge.
Their new drama for tvN will be a Friday-Saturday miniseries in the timeslot following Signal, about a lawyer who finds out that he has Alzheimer’s and puts his life on the line to fight one last case. He does it while battling his deteriorating memory, discovering just how precious his life and family are in the process.
It sounds a lot like the prosecutor-fighting-corruption-before-dying drama Punch, which can’t be a bad thing. I just hope it’s actually about finding meaning and hope in the face of everything and making the most of your remaining time, not just a story about how depressing Alzheimer’s can be, because uh, been there, done that. And I don’t ever want to do it again.
Memory follows Signal on Fridays and Saturdays beginning in March.

Whoa, Resurrection and The Devil were awesome. I didn't care much for Shark, beside UhmForce wasn't in it. So in my own little world, I don't consider it a trilogy.
Yay for tvN!

I'm just sad Son Ye-jin was stuck with Shark, instead of Resurrection or Devil. I love Resurrection as it is, and like Devil, but I'm a major SYJ fangirl...she would have kicked ass in either of those dramas, just sayin lol.
Hopefully this new drama could have Uhmforce + Son Ye-jin.

Uhmforce + Son Ye-jin would be totally awesome. Shark and Pirates were the last 2 projects I've seen from her and I didn't like either one.
Looking forward to Princess Deokhye but the director hasn't done anything in 4yrs and I don't know who the writer is.

This team made one of the best mini-series on global TV and that's The Devil. It had every element of today's US cable shows (Mr. Robot reminds me of that atmosphere and the "anti-hero" type). It was a masterpiece from every angle, better than Resurrection by far. Shark could have been the larger than life finale of the revenge trilogy but probably "stumbled" on KBS's obnoxious era. KNG would have become a cult icon in K-dramaland without a doubt, no matter the ratings. The storyline was one the best I've watched on TV. Maybe the luck of "Uhm-force",- like @Kiara stated-, really jinxed the whole project.
Good luck to them and to tvN. May the days of cancellations are over for good! (if our UhmForce is on board, he can always spread his positive vibes on Memory...)

Devil also my favourite among the three despite objectively, Resurrection is a better revenge drama... Never forget about Joo Ji Hoon and Uhm Force grey characterization, and the plo. It's unforgetable ride.

Devil and Kimchi Family my favorite dramas, esp Devil. So well written and deep. Glad to know I'm not the only one who appreciates this writer. I too am afraid to watch Memory, at least right now. Too bad I didn't discover this article last Oct, nobody will see it now.

What's with lawyers and their memories in dramaland?
A New Leaf: lawyer got amnesia
Remember: lawyer has too much memory THEN amnesia
Memory: lawyer has Alzheimer's..

lol yes. Suits are really well-tailored in dramaland, which can only be a plus.
@kanz. I agree lol, whenever Kdrama thinks it hits on a winning concept, there are like 30 million variations on a theme. At least lawyers with bad memories beats dating your psychologist, in my book haha.

Yayy..I love these PD and writer. They produced well written and excellent cinematography piece. Resurrection made me fall over UTW charm, and made me a die hard fan of him and JJH through The Devil. Fermentation Family awed me with its beautiful cinematography, well written tangled web story, and the warm feeling I got from watching, it lingers till now.
Can't wait to see their upcoming drama. But March, it is simply too far away!

Honestly, the similar concepts make me wonder if all Writers/Pd gather for brainstorming sessions and come up with the same idea with slight variations each year, this year Memory, another Time Travel, another Ghosts....?!!

Resurrection, Devil/Mawang are awesome, Shark had potential but missed that "umpf" factor. I'm in for this. March is so far away though. I always feel like revenge dramas / movies are made for colder month for some reason ^^.

I feel like the only one who didn't care for Devil, haha. I thought that the acting was lacking and it didn't thrill me as much as I hoped. That was some ending, though.
Didn't like Maou, the Japanese remake, all that much more, but I do love Ikuta Toma more than anyone in the Korean cast, so that was a plus.

You're not alone. Well, not exactly? idk, I liked Devil, but I felt like it got a little hypocritical about some of its characters, so I fell out of love with it as I watched. And I agree, the acting was lacking--Uhmforce was great again, but the cast was just okay for the most part. For me, Resurrection was much better overall--it was more consistent, plus had higher highs.

I hope Uhm Force will cast in this drama. It was recently announced that he's quitting Superman is Back for new acting projects. As far as I know, he has a movie project and I hope this will follow later.
I also want this original team to make another revenge drama so that the real trilogy will be done. I feel bad for Shark actors while saying it but Resurrection+Devil+Shark doesn't give the feels of a real trilogy without Uhm Force in the last.
