Choi Jin-hyuk discharged from army early due to knee injury

Oh no, it’s usually happy news to hear of actors coming back from army duty, but this is unfortunate. Choi Jin-hyuk (Pride and Prejudice, Fated To Love You) has been discharged from the army on disability after only seven months of active duty. It was announced on October 21 that the army officially discharged him on October 16 because he injured his knee badly while serving, underwent surgery, and was unable to recover to active duty status.

The actor reported for mandatory military service on March 31 of this year, and reportedly injured his knee severely while on duty. He underwent surgery for the damaged knee cartilage, and hoped to recover fully and continue active service (the usual term is 21 months). But it was determined that he would need long-term treatment and rehabilitation, and was discharged early.

His reps say that he’s extremely distraught over being discharged early when he really wanted to complete his service term, which I honestly believe — he gains nothing from coming back to civilian life early, given how stringent the cultural view is on celebrities being given any sort of special treatment in the army.

Unfortunately that means he likely won’t be back to acting any sooner than if he had stayed in the army — it would only create backlash where there needn’t be, so it seems unwise. Besides, he has a knee to rehabilitate. Hopefully the time off will lead to a full healthy recovery, and we’ll see him back on our screens soon.

Feel better, CJH! My brother's going for a similar knee surgery this week, so I can imagine it'll take Oppa a while to rehabilitate.

Would love to see him in another project, but not until he's 100% better

All the best to your bro. I hope he recovers well. :)

I wish CJH all the best too. Problem with knee injuries is that they have a lot of effects later on. He'll need to take it easy even with the roles he choose because even a few years from now, strenuous activity will cause it to act up again.

It'll still be like he's serving because he'll be out of the public eye but there'll be time to heal and get some rest.

Aww thank you, Arhazivory! :)

I hope for his sake he can still serve somehow while undergoing rehab and be spared the public backlash.

Frankly, I believe it when his reps say he wanted to complete his service - Won Bin was discharged from the army early because of an injury too, and netizens were pretty savage about it. They only cooled off because there were receipts on that one - he underwent a year of physical therapy on his shoulder.

Yeah he is going to get some back lash for this no matter what. Hopefully everything should be properly documented (as it happened on duty) so that it won't go to bad. especially if he also takes the time to get rehabilitation and don't go straight back to a drama.

Yup I've been thinking the same thing. I kind of want to send him a get well card you know? Because he's going to take some heat for this, as ridiculous and judgmental as it is.

What might be a really smart thing for him to do is open up an instagram (as far as I could tell he didn't have any social media when he left, though there were some fan accounts) and just spam the BLEEP! out of it with rehab pictures. Like every day here's a selfie with my therapist. Here's a picture of my bruised and mangled knee. Here's me in a cast. Etc.

I still don't understand why some people like to hate on everything others did or involved in unfortunate incident...
Do they feel satisfied on hating someone for 24/7?
From my pov.. they are obsessed in hating others.

I ain't complaining he's out early - I miss his voice, one of the sexiest around.

BUT ... I can also see why some have judgemental comments.
Sometimes when same injuries happen to ordinary folk from ordinary parents with no clout/no agencies behind them to help facilitate anything ... they stay in there with knee injury, unheard and suffering. Or serve desk-duty or some other lighter job.

This happens in my home country's army too where some folk get excused because mom and dad are influential hot-shot lawyers who knows psychiatrists who can write reports citing something like 'Defiance Personality Disorder' and that's it - term shortened by 12 mths

I have come to believe that when life creates a pause in your life, it is wise to heed that and handle what is in front of you.

I don't like to hear of folks getting injured or sick and am hopeful he will focus on his rehab. He may not go out for roles or do other media events, but he may be able to work on getting better at his acting while he has this down time. He can funnel this experience and his emotions about it and put it to use in that sense. This is not saying he is a bad actor, only that he has time on his hands so why not study more.

I wish him a full recovery.

He had a really advanced surgery on the cartilage involving stem cells (?!) back in the summer but the recovery is going to take months. Normally if you have a medical issue up to a month in the Korean army you get a temporary leave for it, but after that it's a write-off and it seems they discharge you.

Yes please let the knee rest and rehab properly! Otherwise he is just going to be in reoccurring pain *speaking from experience*

It is a shame though. Hopefully he will not suffer to much backlash from the public for it, it's not like he was trying to get away from it, and the accident did happen while he was on duty.

I can see how he probably won't be back before the term is over though due to potential backlash. Or he might try to get into some non-active duty instead to finish the service term. (not sure how the korean military works for this aspect)

He should concentrate on healing and not even think about doing any work for his remaining time or else the netizens will surely get on his case.

I sincerely hope this is not like Kim Bum's cousin, Shin Dong Wook, who has never really recovered either physically or professionally from the illness that forced him to leave the army early.

For a moment I mistook Kim Bum for BOF but it was Suju. Wasn't aware of Shin Dong Wook's rare condition, which explains why I (we) haven't seen him ever since his discharge in 2011. Although I hated Soulmates's ending, his aura stuck with me. Wonder how he's been coping with it all, especially financially.

So sorry to hear about your early discharge from the military due to your knee injury. Wishing you all the best with your long-term treatment and rehabilitation Choi Jin-Hyuk. Some days may be harder than others, but try to stay positive through your recovery. May you recover fully from your knee injury and enjoy the best of health for many years to come. You have fans rooting for you and looking forward to seeing you back on your feet again.

Omg. No way. Is this fully treatable or will his knees be permanently hurt? I hope he doesn't deserve any backlash but I believe it will be a sticky situation for him to return to dramas now (even after his initial discharge date) because I know how picky netizens are.
They will say things like 'Discharged early to get treatment but goes on dramas like he is doing a marathon' etc.

Anyway. I hope he takes a good time to heal the injury and I will look forward to his drama projects in due course of time.

I just hope he gets a reliable Orthopedic surgeon who knows how to rehabilitate patient successfully. The critical stage about knee problem is post operatively. Better get that knee working within the first 24hrs CJH or else we'll be seeing devil scar tissues. Hang on dude!

I hope he recovers fast. Getting backlash for a serious injury people need to learn how to be supportive. Its not like he orchestrated everything, military training are very difficult and painful, and upon that so much of negativity.

Oh no! Hope he gets the best treatment available. Knee injury is pretty serious. (I'm a nurse). Cartilage/tendon takes longer to heal than muscles so it's going to be a long rehab for him. Fighting CJH! ?
Don't see why netizens need to be so cruel to knock him for being discharge early due to injury. Hopefully he doesn't receive any backlash. ?

been there, done that. Knee surgery and rehab is a huge bummer (I am putting this very lightly) - 1.5 years after surgery my knee is still not back to original form.

Good luck to CJH, hope he will have a good uneventful recovery.

Bummer. CJH 's injury was bad enough for him to get surgery. Why would he get any backlash?
Also, he probably has to get physical therapy for a couple of months and, each person may take longer to heal. Probably if he stayed in the service he would not be able to perform properly as a solider especially the heavy physical activity.
I had foot surgery last year. My foot was in a cast and a full boot for 3 months, and I practically couldn't do anything without assistance by myself. Didn't expect it, but after the cast was removed, I had hip spasms and pain on the other side of my body. It took about 6 months of painful physical therapy to fully recover.
I empathize with him. Hope he will recover soon...

That doesn't work with knetz. I've seen idols who go down on their knees and beg for their fans forgiveness simply because they've been too sick to perform once. Ldrama world may not be as insane as kpop world, but they all provide entertainment to the same people, therefore the backlash comes from the same audience.

Oh he's gonna get so much hate for this. I mean it's knetz we're talking about. If they're not being sexually frustrated over people dating or psychotically obsessive, then they're just being down right evil cuz the trend is being mean to people who are doing better than you. And no, I'm not exaggerating, I've seen what the kpop fandom is capable of.

I am sorry to hear this happened to you, Choi Jin-Hyuk. I hope you can maintain a positive attitude throughout your treatment. If you get any blacklash, please ignore it. Those people don't know what your daily challenges are. You were injured on active duty and that's to be honored.

As a suggestion: take the time to work on your English and accent improvement and come work in Hollywood. You would be a great asset in that arena and the US has laws protecting people who are "other abilitied."
