Yong-pal: Episode 11
by HeadsNo2
Yeo-jin finally starts thinking about planning to someday soon take action against her murderous brother, who tries to defend his actions this hour with decidedly mixed results. Thankfully she’s got one hell of an ally in Tae-hyun, but she finds another ally where she definitely wasn’t expecting to in her late father. It’s a shame that some things between them couldn’t be solved until he was beyond the grave, but better late than never, right?

EPISODE 11 RECAP
Tae-hyun accompanies the hospital’s chief of security to Yeo-jin’s consultation following her “checkup,” though it doesn’t seem like they checked that much since they all think the woman beneath the bandages is the factory worker who tried to kill herself.
Luckily for Yeo-jin, the doctor believes she’s suffering from amnesia as well as an inability to speak, so this quells concerns about her talking to anyone. But just to make sure she doesn’t, the chief of security has her moved to the twelfth floor—at least until the shareholder’s meeting.
Only when he’s left alone with Yeo-jin does Tae-hyun confront her about her daring move: “Are you crazy? What are you doing here?” But before he can get another angry word in, Yeo-jin wraps her arms around him and pulls him to her.
She asks what he was thinking by writing that letter to her, and that she knew that it was really just a cry for help. Tae-hyun softens enough to place his hand on her back, and she tells him to just admit he’s happy to see her.
“How can you smile in this situation?” he asks at her teasing tone. “Don’t worry,” she reassures him. “I have a weapon to use in the fight against Han Do-joon. One that can save you.” She won’t tell him her exact plans, only that they can no longer hide from the battle awaiting them—and even if she could, she wouldn’t.
Chae-young’s spying maid listens in on Do-joon’s conversation with his secretary and a maniacal President Go, who urges him to put out Yeo-jin’s obituary and clean up what’s left behind, by which he means Tae-hyun.
So she calls him into her hospital room to tell him that he has to leave immediately, and surprises him when she reveals that she already knows he was planning to make her believe he ran away when in reality he’d just kill himself.
Chae-young promises to help him disappear, prompting Tae-hyun to ask why she’s helping him. “Because I like you. I like your style,” she replies simply. But even with the offer, Tae-hyun can’t leave now. Chae-young hopes that he’ll tell her when he changes his mind, because if things go too far, there’ll only be so much she can do.
Tae-hyun and Yeo-jin are waylaid on their way to her old hospital room (where her father hid his will, which is presumably what Nurse Ahjumma shared with her) by Do-joon and company on their way to see his dear sister, leaving Tae-hyun with no other choice but to leave Yeo-jin in the hall and follow them inside.
While standing over the mannequin, Do-joon tells Tae-hyun to “officially” call Yeo-jin’s time of death. When he does, Do-joon and President Go shake hands to cement their unholy union, and it’s at President Go’s suggestion that he turn Yeo-jin’s funeral into his own coronation ceremony that Do-joon decides to do just that.
Tae-hyun rushes to Yeo-jin’s room to urge her to flee, since they’ll be holding her funeral and her identity will surely be revealed. But she doesn’t take this as a warning, but more of an opportunity—though for what, we don’t know.
Cut to the moderate press conference where President Go announces Yeo-jin’s death and upcoming funeral within the week. Do-joon’s secretary just continues to stew that President Go is taking his place, which Yeo-jin notices and takes advantage of by texting her brother’s phone while it’s in his secretary’s possession: “Carry out my funeral well, Oppa. -Han Yeo-jin.”
It’s enough to leave him unsettled, since it’s Do-joon’s secure phone that only a handful of people even know the number to. Yeo-jin’s revenge has begun.
Chief Lee still hasn’t received surgery, and tension arises when Tae-hyun suggests Tae-yong perform it despite not having permission from security. Can he call himself a real doctor if he waits that long?
Tae-yong takes this as an insult and growls that he decides what’s best for the surgery department, not just one patient. “Is that why you reported me?” Tae-hyun shoots back. He further whittles away at Tae-yong’s pride when he tells him to stop talking about being a “real doctor” in front of the impressionable nurses and rookies.
Watching all the flower wreaths being brought in for Yeo-jin’s funeral, Nurse Ahjumma comments to Tae-hyun that it seems more like a festival than a funeral. But Tae-hyun tells her they’ve got bigger fish to fry—more importantly, he needs her help to save Chief Lee.
Do-joon basks in the limelight at Yeo-jin’s funeral, not even bothering to hide the smirk on his features as he passes by countless minions with their heads bowed to him. “Please rest in peace in heaven,” Do-joon thinks to himself as he faces the portrait of his supposedly dead sister. “I’ll gladly go to hell.”
After the first incense stick he places at her altar breaks, making him wonder if his late sister doesn’t want to accept it, he replaces it with another before President Go informs him that any mourners who arrive in grey ties have pledged their loyalty to him.
Chae-young’s father shows up in a gray tie, though he acts much more subservient to his son-in-law as he begs him to forgive his foolish daughter. Do-joon acts like he’s uncomfortable with all the groveling, but his sly smile gives him away.
That’s when Do-joon’s secretary receives another ominous text, again claiming to be from Yeo-jin: “Oppa, if everyone finds out that I’m alive and well, won’t your whole world be turned upside down?”
Of course, only then does he actually go and check the body in the morgue, and is justifiably frightened when he realizes that it’s not Yeo-jin’s corpse. Do-joon will kill them if he were to find out, but the chief of security says that all they have to do is find Yeo-jin before the wake. They’ll start by finding out whose body is lying in her place.
They corner Nurse Ahjumma in a weirdly dark and quiet area of the hospital to confront her about misidentifying Yeo-jin’s corpse. Thank goodness she’s fast on her feet, and when asked why she did what she did, she claims Chief Lee switched out the corpses and that she only did what he told her to do.
I love Nurse Ahjumma even more now, because in shifting the blame away from herself, she’s also doing as Tae-hyun requested by helping Chief Lee—now Do-joon’s secretary has a reason to keep him alive in order to question him.
To that end, he enlists Tae-hyun to perform Chief Lee’s surgery, though Tae-hyun remarks on the irony in asking someone who’s about to die to save someone else. Do-joon’s secretary reminds him that it’s not just his life on the line but his sister’s, giving Tae-hyun no other choice but to acquiesce.
While Tae-hyun turns Chief Lee’s tiny stab wound into an enormous abdominal incision, Chae-young confronts her husband about wanting a divorce. Now that her father has pledged loyalty to him, there’s no more reason for him to have her as his hostage, right?
She adds that while she’d considered taking Yeo-jin and using that to her advantage, now that she’s dead, there’s no reason for her to stay with him. But Do-joon shuts that idea down fast: “You can never escape from my grasp.”
Chae-young can’t understand why he’d want to keep a wife who won’t even sleep with him, to which Do-joon replies, “I love you.” She finds that idea laughable and tells him it’s not love, but obsession.
He doesn’t necessarily refute that, turning gravely serious as he adds that everyone he ever loved abandoned him—his mother committed suicide, and the stepmother he loved more than his own mother abandoned him as soon as she had Yeo-jin.
“Do you know what happened to those people?” he asks Chae-young without actually asking her. “I buried all of them with my own hands. And now, it’s time to bury Yeo-jin. No one can abandon me now before I abandon them.”
To his not-a-sob-story, Chae-young adds her own real one: “Before I married you, I had someone I loved. He was the son of a small company, and he was kind. I was pregnant with his child.” At this, Do-joon’s hand clenches into a fist.
She continues that she never wanted to be a chaebol’s wife, but because her father had no choice but to bend to his master’s (Do-joon’s father) will, her lover’s family went bankrupt and he committed suicide in the end. And she aborted his child.
“Do you understand now?” she turns to Do-joon, her eyes glistening. “You were never the victim. You’ve always been the perpetrator. I am never going to have your child.”
Do-joon throws his glass against the wall, shattering it, before dragging Chae-young to the couch and throwing her on it. She doesn’t struggle as he straddles her and smashes his lips against her unyielding ones, but it’s that lack of resistance that finally stops him. “You can kill me,” Chae-young finally says, “but you can’t have me. Ever.”
After she slips from his grasp, Do-joon drinks heavily and calls his secretary to task for keeping her background a secret from him—he must have known about her past since he did all the checking on her for his father.
His secretary admits he knew, but falls to his knees to beg Do-joon’s forgiveness for keeping it from him on the late chairman’s orders. He grows concerned when Do-joon doesn’t throw something at him, worried that all Do-joon’s talk of killing everyone who knew too much will end with him six feet under.
Unwittingly, Yeo-jin picks the perfect time to send Do-joon’s secretary another text: “Bring my passport to Incheon Airport right now. If not, you’ll also die by Han Do-joon’s hands.” Convinced that she’s alive and attempting to flee the country, his secretary calls for all their resources to go to the airport and catch her.
Tae-hyun finds Yeo-jin on the hospital’s rooftop garden after finishing up Chief Lee’s surgery, and doesn’t ask why when she asks for his cell phone. Texting as Tae-hyun, she sends a message to Chae-young claiming that he’s ready to leave the hospital. Chae-young texts back that she’ll be there in half an hour.
It’s then that Yeo-jin tells Tae-hyun what she wants, and that’s for him to escape the hospital’s clutches. She’s already taken care of the guards by diverting everyone’s attention to the airport, which will clear the way for him.
He refuses to go and leave her behind like this, but she assures him that what she needs him to do can only be done if he’s outside the hospital’s sphere of influence. After resisting initially, Tae-hyun finally agrees to hear what that something is: “Will you… marry me?” Whaaaaat.
“Marry me and become my heir and guardian,” Yeo-jin adds. “That way, you can protect me from Han Do-joon.” Tae-hyun doesn’t even take a second to answer with: “Okay, I will.” Yeo-jin warns him not to answer so easily, since it’s a decision that’ll take careful consideration and—…
But a kiss from Tae-hyun interrupts her train of thought. That’s his answer after careful consideration, he says, and Yeo-jin accepts. And though Chae-young scoops him up from the hospital after using some plainclothes minions to beat down the guards, Tae-hyun surprises her by asking to be taken to the airport.
Chae-young kind of steamrolls over anything Tae-hyun has to say, assuming that he wants to escape to the States. She also is operating under the assumption that he texted her for help, so she feels free to tell him that she’s getting a divorce, but proves she’s not that clever when she adds that Do-joon won’t have a reason to bother him once they divorce.
Tae-hyun worries that she’s getting a divorce because of him, but Chae-young doesn’t catch the anxiousness in his tone: “Why else would I get a divorce?” Sensing that they’re on two very different wavelengths, Tae-hyun stutters that he already has someone he loves. Chae-young doesn’t believe him, since nothing in his background check supports that.
Knowing that Do-joon’s secretary will be alone since he’s sent everyone else off to the airport, Yeo-jin texts him to meet her in her room. She takes off her bandages as she walks into her former prison, remembering the words Nurse Ahjumma passed down to her from her father. Like he said, she needs no key to that room when she is the key.
It takes strength for her to walk up to the bed where she lied for three years, utterly powerless, as memories of her time trapped there come flooding back. Once again, she has only to use her handprint to activate the room’s sensors, and has only to sit on the bed for the body scanners to pick up her identity.
A video of her father begins to play, his last will he left her. Past Chairman knew she’d only see this video if she found her way back to her room, which means she’s qualified to become the room’s owner, as well as the owner of Hanshin Group. He also knew that if she was watching, it’d mean he was dead and gone.
Even in death, her father ruefully acknowledges that she must be relieved he’s gone, since she’d tried to kill herself because of how much she hated him. But now he begs her not to die, and cries that he’s sorry. Yeo-jin cries too while watching, as her father says that keeping her in a coma was the only way to keep her alive.
Nothing hurt him so much as when Yeo-jin tried to take away the person he loved most, but he thanks her for at least knowing that she was the one he loved most. And though he knew Do-joon wouldn’t wake her after he died, he still had no other choice but to try. “I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you to the end.”
But then he reveals a bombshell Yeo-jin couldn’t have even dreamed of: He admits he knew about her dating Daejung Group’s heir, but had believed enough in her judgment to leave their relationship alone. It was only after they started their relationship that her father found out that her fiancé had approached her with a motive—he’d secretly been working with Do-joon the whole time.
Yeo-jin’s eyes fill with tears as her hand covers her mouth in shock and disbelief. Her father reveals that her fiancé had planned to set Yeo-jin up on false charges so Do-joon could remove her from the upper echelons, but that things changed when her beau wanted to keep her and the funds he was promised.
That’s what caused his death at Do-joon’s hands, her father adds, though Do-joon had intended for the accident that happened that fateful night to kill both Yeo-jin and her lover. Which kind of begs the question of how her father knew all of this and somehow still had absolutely no way to rein his son in, but okay.
After a few brief moments of hysteria on Yeo-jin’s part, she becomes eerily calm as she listens to the rest of what her father has to say, unaware that Do-joon’s secretary is trying and failing to gain entry to her room. In order to help her gain strength to fight the good fight, her father directs her to a hidden drawer at her bedside containing a USB drive.
In it, her father says, are all of Hanshin’s internal documents, including damning info on slush funds and funds used for political lobbying. Just having that drive will give her power over all Hanshin’s directors and any government official who received money from them.
The owner of that drive can become the real owner of Hanshin Group, her father adds. He also knows that Do-joon will try his best to get his hands on it, but that he can never have it, because he’s not the true heir.
And finally, her father tells Yeo-jin that no matter what anyone said, he loved her mother. “Yeo-jin-ah, I love you. And… please protect Hanshin Group.” Yeo-jin takes all this in with tears streaking down her face. Poor thing.
When she’s ready, she presses the button to give Do-joon’s secretary access to the room. He walks inside fearfully, but masks it to put on a sardonic front: “Here I am, at your command. What will you do now?”
Yeo-jin’s first command? “Kneel before me.”
COMMENTS
Poor Yeo-jin. That was a lot to take in, not only because she just recently found out her father wasn’t as horrible a man as she thought he was (but then, why did she think that if he didn’t oppose her union?), but because her whole world has just been turned upside down. The man she once vilified was secretly her greatest supporter and admirer, while the man she was willing to kill herself over turns out to have been a snake in the grass.
Add that to having a brother who tried to kill you, and crying suddenly seems like a tame reaction by comparison. But it does make me wonder about Do-joon’s past, and what happened to him to make him the sort of man he is today. Now that we know he was trying to kill Yeo-jin the night of the accident, we can say his supposedly loving actions toward her were manipulative—but how about in the past, when he was too little to know how? They used to love each other once, so did Do-joon sacrifice everything he once was at the altar of greed and ambition?
It was interesting to see his scene with Chae-young play out, if only because it gave us a deeper peek into Do-joon’s twisted psyche. The thing is, it’s not that twisted—while everyone except him can see he’s in a hell of his own making, Do-joon seems to see his life as a way of proving to those who would’ve doubted him that he is powerful and worthy of respect. But it’s also a mad scramble for control over those in his life he’s afraid might leave him, or how he thinks one gains control, and when viewed through that lens, Do-joon can almost be seen as tragic.
Key word: almost. At the end of the day, murdering people is inexcusable no matter how tragically one was brought up (today’s public service announcement), and Do-joon isn’t so far gone enough not to know that. Right now he’s able to do everything he wants with impunity—part of the perks of being filthy rich in a fictionalized world—so the next step would be to see him come across a challenge he can’t surmount just by giving someone an order. Do-joon talks a big game about having sent people off with his own two hands, when in reality he’s done none of the dirty work, and probably wouldn’t know what to do with himself if he did.
That’s where Yeo-jin’s plan comes in, and she’s picked a great target with Do-joon’s secretary. From day one we’ve seen how he’s been mistreated and abused by his master, and more recently how the fear of being done away with has been slowly creeping in. Yeo-jin may just be exactly what he needs to switch sides, because Do-joon has to figure out sometime that there’s a certain art to threatening people, and that it just doesn’t work if you threaten to kill everyone near you without incentivizing the kind of behavior you actually want from them. Or maybe he won’t ever learn, and will just be the kind of villain you wish well on their way to hell.
Whatever Yeo-jin’s ultimate plan is, I wonder if any of it will change now that she has the One USB. I’m mostly curious to know exactly how she thinks a marriage with Tae-hyun will protect her against her brother—not exactly the most empowering concept, but if they already love each other and are willing to go that extra mile, good luck and mazel tov.

I had to suppress a laugh with the 'One USB' trope. Yeo Jin, if there's anything I've learned with the years I've spent as a student, it's important to have back-up files. So make sure you have more than on copy of the files.
Anyway, I'm glad that Yong Pal's back to being the thrilling ride that's fun to watch. :D looking forward to the next ep/recap!

Some thoughts that crossed my mind watching this episode. Wondering if anyone might have any answers for them:
1. YeoJin's Catholic. Why is her funeral not a Catholic one? Incense? Umm... unless of course it's cos her brother isn't one. Oh well. Minor point I suppose.
2. So when YeoJin-as-KimYoungMi "wakes up" from her coma, presumably she gets sent for a CT scan? I mean, with those brain images and all on the computer... or was she simply wheeled to the Psych's office? If they scanned her, wouldn't they know if she was *actually* suffering from amnesia and aphasia or not? I would assume these would show up as some form of lesions in the MRI. No? Another #suspendrealworldscienceforkdrama situation I guess.
3. Has anyone seen a scene yet with DoJoon where he *isn't* holding a glass of alcohol of some sort? That man needs to attend AA.
4. TaeHyun pronounces her death... doesn't that put him in some kind of legal trouble when it outs that she's not dead? And then going to marry her some more. How is this going to pan out?

@ mersmerized
1. I noticed in many state funerals like the Sewol, they have big halls that serve as last respect venues. Perhaps those who are Christians or Catholics can opt not to burn the incense.
2. Yeah it's fictional medicine though I am in no position to comment, I suppose they assume the amnesia was due to shock resulted from the fall. Perhaps they also preferred to leave her that way (instead of running more tests which may lead to faster recovery) to hide the embarrassment or litigation resulted from the factory worker's (attempted) suicide. Leaving her on 12th floor would ensure heavy security preventing unwanted visitors.
3. Hahaha I like that. Good point. While he takes his AA sessions, he also need to be brought in for some IRY sessions with our genius Seo In Guk. I thought nurse Hwang was crazy but DJ obviously has more suppressed psychotic issues than her.
4. Well I guess the only witnesses to the death declaration were Pres Go and Do Joon so he can always tell the truth - that he pronounced the dummy dead.

Keep in mind that religion and the practice of traditional customs and culture comes into place whenever paying respects for the dead. I too am Catholic, however that doesn't preclude me from practicing my cultural traditions. I am first and foremost an Asian person and that alone has nothing to do with my religion.

About #2: I'm pretty sure they would still be looking at the original medical records of the real Young Mi. I don't think they'd repeat the same scans since not that much time has passed. So, same medical records, and I'd assume that the assessment of YJ/"Young Mi" by the doctor was cursory, so she would just have so act like she can't speak and doesn't remember. Young Mi is someone they want to keep quiet, remember? An employee who's on strike and was protesting against Hanshin? So they would want to believe that she can't speak and doesn't remember. Not that difficult to make sense of. Sure, it's shady, and no real, self-respecting doctor would let that kind of exam pass, but that's the point, I think. Hanshin is riddled with corruption and secrets and lies. Even the hospital.

In the blink of an eye, we are halfway through this drama. I can't say it's been completely amazing so far. It's good but not good enough to get those kind of ratings. I guess not having much competition will do that.

The ratings are thru the roof.
Now I don't know if the show deserves those kinds of ratings. I'm just happy that it is Not a frustrating watch like some show that airs (aired) in the same time slot, or stupid like some other show(s) can be.
I wish they'd let Joo Won catch some shut-eye. It seems unfair that he can't look his best owing to continued sleep deprivation.

The ratings dropped about 3 points after episode 8, but shot back up to 18s for episode 12. One thing about the live shoot system - it is very unfriendly to action shows. I think a lot of what drew people in here initially was the mashup of action/medical drama/chaebol revenge. Healer, for instance, was best in the early episodes where the cool parkour and bigger fight scenes could take place.

Agree on your point about live shooting limitations for action shows. And also all the previous commentators' debate about the quality snd pace of the show being compromised for extension is now no longer relevant.
For a 16-episode show, it's trying to accommodate lots of stuff. Can't please everyone..... when the pace picks up people complain, when the pace slows down, people complain...

I quit Healer in the middle. At the risk of being eviscerated, lemme just say that unreasonable 'just-cant-with-this-drama' happens to happen to me quite often. Im usually 50% into a drama when im impressed with the initial reviews. Then, im in another 20% if I happen to like the entire cast... not just the leads... the leads can be fluff... the other 30% needs to be won over by how much the drama can make me believe the story... from acting chops to story line to character development...

No. 1 was the title. Why was it just Healer? Did the story revolve around just him? Next the character Healer, why was he called Healer? what was he healing? Situations? I guess so. I think Fixer or Fixer Upper might have been a better name then. JMO. Also, JCW's acting wasnt my cup of tea. I'm sorry :(
Im very measured in my kdrama viewing. I cant watch multiple dramas at a time, also I live a busy life as a lawyer. But I m gonna watch Oh my Ghostess and I Remember you and maybe , Heart to Heart after Yong Pal so thanks! @Aigoooooooo

@Aigoooo 4 and 4.3.3
I don't think it's because Yongpal has no competition.
Earlier this year, on Wed-Thurs time slot (same as Yong Pal) these 3 dramas were head to head at most of their airing dates: Healer; Hyde, Jekyll, Me; Kill Me, Heal Me. And these are their average viewership ratings for their whole broadcast as per AGB, if you combine them all, it's 24.2%:
Healer - 8.6%
Hyde, Jekyll, Me - 5.5%
Kill Me, Heal Me - 10.1%
Currently, Yong Pal, Scholar Who Walks the Night, and Assembly has the following average viewership ratings as per AGB, if you combine them all, it's 30%:
Yong Pal - 17.3% (average of episodes 1-12)
Scholar Who Walks the Night - 7.4%
Assembly - 5.3% (average of episodes 1-18)
There's a difference of 5.8% percent in total viewership ratings of each drama clusters. So it's not that Yong Pal has no competition, it's just that there's more people who really loves to watch it. Were were those 5.8% when Healer, JHM, and KMHM were airing?
Don't get me wrong, I was able to watch all the first three, I liked Healer and KMHM, I wished they had higher ratings but too bad they didn't.

Good question: which drama deserves better rating?
Nobody will dare to answer you coz it's easy for some people to criticise a drama but not easy to relax and enjoy the shows.
There are lots of good dramas but they don't make higher ratings than 10% or 15%. I personally like Healer, Blood, IRY and wished they had higher ratings.
Nevertheless, I am very happy that YongPal makes good ratings.

For me, I am very happy this show has high ratings. I really love the show, the writing and the cast. I did not think it slowed down in some episodes, there was a purpose to those “slow” episodes. I really like how the writer seems to have thought things through to the end; he does not reveal everything at once. I think we have not heard everything the dad told Yeo-jin and all of Yeo-jin’s instructions to the secretary. This show has kept me guessing in a good way.
I guess the people in Korea really like the show too because of the consistently high ratings; it even has a high rating for reruns. I don’t think you can say that it does not have much competition, taking into account the shows and the cast of the shows at the same time slot. You cannot say that those shows deserve their lower ratings. It just happened that way.

@ Athena
Very good observation. It just happened that way and you can bet the industry people are cracking their heads to find out what makes yongpal ticks so high. I think it has to do with a few x-factors:
1. People love "underdog" shows. Someone wronged and misunderstood by the society and then against all odds, survived and saved people. (Eg Spider-Man)
2. Fairytales. Folks loved snow whites, sleeping beauty and cinderellas. But this is the first time ever people are seeing true sleeping beauty. I mean some critics cringed at her paycheck (for sleeping) but ratings proved that the viewers are curious and empathizing with her while she's asleep and they are rooting for her to wake up and to fight back. (Eg When the Moon embraces the Sun, Snow White & the Huntsmen).
2. Looks good, feels good
Let's admit it. This OTP looks good on screen and the camera absolutely is in love with both of them.
3. Drama, drama, drama
Killings, injustice, suicides ... And crazy love. People like the idea of something bigger than life. The ideals that are missing in life. Old classic romance. Patience and humility.
Do other shows have these qualities. Yes some do, but why yongpal? It's a mystery for now.

Thanks Heads!
I agree that there are holes and there are holes. But let's put them aside for now. At least we have an episode of exposition... we get to hear quite a lot.
Some backstory is better than no backstory. We also get to listen to Do Joon and Chae Young and posthumously to Chairman Han. It's still not enough to make us care for Do Joon and I can't actually say his character is any less flat for his exposition, but now we know for sure that he has abandonment issues. He may also have an issue about being possessive or being obsessive over people, which might explain his being abandoned, but as nothing further about him is revealed yet, we don't know.
Although the pace has improved and the writing has moved the show back closer to the plot we started with, I still felt that it was slower than the first 4-6 episodes. Too much exposition and not enough action, I believe.
The good part - Yeo Jin is very capable and is very much in control, Chae Young is as good as her word, Nurse Ahjumma continues to help without appearing to and Chief Lee will hopefully recover and join Tae Hyun's gang.
The pity - Tae Hyun was relegated to the passenger seat this episode (except that he was trying to save Chief Lee), Dr Tae Yang let jealousy and resentment take over, Tae Hyun's sister is still used in threats against him, Secretary/Director Sohn may turn and turn again (how far can he be trusted?). Tae Hyun's dad has no more role and disappears.

Hi @Growingbeautifully
Which plot holes were you referring to?
While I would like to see more of Joo Won and Tae Hyun is my favorite character in this drama, we also need to see the revelations of other characters and besides, they are integral to moving the plot along.
Tae Hyun's sister will never be totally safe as long as Do Joon is in power. Secretary is playing a bigger part than ever and I do like the fact that we can't figure out which side he's on. Tae Hyun's dad is boring so I don't wish to see him again.
I do not know how much action is enough but what I do know is that this drama keeps me on the edge of my seat almost throughout the entire 60 mins. Granted that ep 7 to 9 were a tad slow, only in comparison to the earlier episodes, this drama has one of the fastest pace I have ever seen.

A mixture of thoughts.... not that they need an explanation :)
We are assuming Nurse Ahjumma told Yeo Jin all she needed to know to access the room and hear her father's will? (Of course we can guess and assume but if we do, it means there are plot holes.)
A patient whom the nurses think is Kim Young Mi walks into what was once a restricted room and does not emerge and that does not elicit some concern from the nurses?
Yeo Jin is putting a lot of trust in Sohn whom she does not particularly like... a bit risky giving Sohn that one USB.
So this is a hospital where doctors need permission to do surgery on Chief Lee, failing which they will let him die? No protest from the staff about letting one of their own die. Even Nurse Ahjumma was very calm about it.
Yeo Jin needs to revoke the death cert first before she can have a lawful marriage, I'd think. One can't marry a "legally" dead person. Yes, isn't there the issue of Dr making false death declaration only to marry the corpse the next day problem? :D

Thank you for your reply. I hesitated to ask because it would appear that I am always on the defensive when it comes to this drama but I don't think I am, at least not without reason. See, not a few have complain about plot holes while I see far fewer in this drama than compared to others. Maybe it's not the quantity but the type of plot holes. Added to that is what we as individual viewers consider as plot holes.
I found this categorization helpful:
Minor plot holes - those that contradict logic of scenes.
Major plot holes - those that contradict logic of characters.
Super plot holes - those that contradict logic of conflict and story line.
So, I guess my beef was that while I don't deny that Yong Pal has its share of minor plot holes, it doesn't have major or super plot holes as yet.
The show didn't tell us what Nurse Ahjumma said and we can assume she told Yeo Jin about the room, I will hesitate to even call it a minor plot hole. Is this drama asking viewers to make more assumptions than normal? I notice a number of comments like yours and I guess it must be. Well, I realized that the show likes to cut off scenes or show you parts of it, only to reveal the 'missing' bits later. Or sometimes, it just assumes that they don't need to show and usually it's not difficult or unreasonable for the viewers to guess.
Yeo Jin walking into the restricted room - I think the nurses didn't see her. Kim Young Mi was already placed in the VIP section/floor as instructed by the Chief of Security. Her room could be one of those which is just outside the restricted area. YJ may not even need to walk past the nurse station. Only thing is the show didn't show the nurses missed seeing her walk towards the restricted room. So again, on this point, at worse a very minor plot hole.
Yeo Jin putting a lot of trust in Sohn and the one USB - I will reserve my judgement on that because we really don't know the truth yet. There could be a lot more behind it or it could be plain stupidity on Yeo Jin's part. Let's revisit this in ep 13 in which we shall probably know.
You have a point about the doctors and staff obeying orders and letting someone die. Not everyone behaved this way though. Nurse Oh was the one who alerted TH when he came back to the hospital on Chief Lee's dire straits. I am not sure about Nurse Ahjumma, she seems to be shocked that TH wants to save Chief Lee. Maybe she hates him? Ha. So what's this one? Minor plot hole?
I don't think Yeo Jin needs to revoke death cert. She just needs to be alive. The only issue is that TH made a false declaration and I am not sure if that is something where he will be disciplined by the medical board or does it fall under a criminal act. In any case, as long as he can prove that he was coerced, he should not be in trouble.

I like your categorization of plot holes! ???
Just to add to that:
Minor plot holes - forgiveable
Major plot holes - may be forgiven if the drama turns out to be really good overall
Super plot holes - *must get a drink to forget about an awful drama and the hours wasted*

SS, The nurses did see her walk past them towards the door to Young Ae's room. To give them benefit of doubt, you can say that they expected the door to be locked and thought that she would just turn back. Instead she disappeared.
But now my question. You have this super secret, super specialty 12th floor that others are not given access to. Yet, on the 12th floor you have daft nurses like those two, who allow patients to walk wherever, don't bother to check if the patient is missing and just stare while CY wheels out a patient.
The death certificate is a no go. Just by the fact that you are alive. I am more concerned about the marriage certificate. How did he get one without YJ being there?

The nurses did see Yeo Jin going to the restricted area, but they even comment there's no one there and no reason to guard it, either. Plus, random people can't get into it. At worst the woman will be wandering the halls and she probably can use the exercise.
The nurses in the 12 floor don't seem like the most capable bunch, but then, the 12 floor at times feels more like a hotel & spa than a hospital, so these nurses are maybe better at cattering to customers than at actual nursing. And you probably don't want people that are too smart populating it, unless you have dirt on them and can control them (Tae Hyun's case and such). In a way these nurses are probably really good at their jobs since they don't question how odd their place of work really is.
As for the nurses letting Chae Young do whatever, well, she's the owner's wife. They probably know better than to try and get in her way. Chae Young wills her power shamelessly when she needs it and we've seen her fire pepople on the spot for not following her whims.

Yes likely, they assumed she couldn't access the room, after all, they didn't know she is the "key". Also, they may think that there's nothing harmful in an empty room.
About plot holes and logic, I can see artistic license being heavily deployed in this show. Still, I like the show and enjoy the good parts.

@KDramaNewbie— In the scene where Tae Hyun gets the marriage registration certificate, he asks if he can complete one with the passports of both parties and the clerk says yes.
Now that I think of it, there's a similar plot point in Playful Kiss (several of the live action versions and I assume in the manga as well). Naoki claims he won't register their marriage until Kotoko passes her nursing school entrance exam, or something like that, but when she and her MIL go to register the marriage they find out he has done it already. That's the under Japanese registration system of course, but it also happens the Korean version of the show (http://www.dramabeans.com/2010/10/playful-kiss-episode-16-final/). So I guess that's something one can do in Korea?

When it's possible to fill in the blanks without contradicting any prior or later knowledge, it's not a plot hole. Some things can be left to the imagination. So Yeo Jin knowing how to access the throne room is not a plot hole.
The rest ARE kind of flimsy, I agree. Needs a moderate amount of suspension of disbelief.

The thing about saving Chief Lee, most doctor's are probably in Tae Yong's position, where they would try and help out, but they are sticking to bureaucratics which prevent them from operating. President Go and Han Do Joon want to just let Chief Lee die, so they must have interfered so that the bureaucratics never go through. To operate on Chief Lee you basically have to go against boss's orders. That's not something that most would be willing to do. These doctors at the end, care more about keeping their job or getting a better job than saving lives. But the thing is, they do work at a hospital. There's procedures to that and rules do exist for a reason. Going against those in a hospital could be irresponsibly, cost lives as well as cost them their careers, and at the end of the day, if you don't work, you can't eat. What sets people like Tae Hyun or Rebel Nurse aside is that they are willing to stake their careers and assume risks to save someone. But not everyone is like that.
Also, I don't think Nurse Ahjumma likes Chief Lee all that much, since she saw him letting Yeo Jin die in the OR (kind of creepy for a doctor). And I also don't think Nurse Ahjumma has held onto her post by just recklessly doing whatever she wants whenever she wants (that's more up Rebel Nurse's alley). I think she knows when to keep quiet and what battles to pick. But she has a really soft spot for Tae Hyun, so she's willing to help him out, no matter what he asks.

A) The character's background.
B) The character's motivation.
C) The character's relationships with other characters.
D) The character's actions in each episode: 1, 2, 3, ....., 11 This is where you'll be happy I asked for a short description!
Then **everyone who wants to play** discusses all the plot holes relating to this character's actions.

Analyzing Characters Bible Story styles :)
Chae Young
1. Character's Background: Her dad worked with Do Joon (her husband)'s dad. Her dad worked under Do Joon's and always felt he could have been worth more, which feelings he has projected onto his daughter who is much stronger in drive and character than he is. She however grew up rich enough to attend a prestigious college abroad. She seems a bit spoiled. Adventurous and in search of thrills. She is intelligent as far as what she wants for herself is concerned. She acts like a clueless, dumb person to patronize her husband whom she doesn't love and was forced by her dad to marry.
2. Character's Motivations: She appears to have gotten married to Do Joon because she had no choice and to advance her father's interests. She appears to like good guys with fair enough prospects without wanting to go overboard with materialistic motivations. She appears to do everything with a view to achieving some result which will benefit her or people she cares about in some way.
3. Character's Relationships with others: Hates her husband. Loves her dad but resents his weaknesses. Uses Do Joon's obsession with her to her advantage. Treats desirable men as playthings. Is currently obsessed with Yong Pal. Sees her sister-in-law as a means to an end. Is likely to be a turncoat to others when the odds are not in her favour.
4. Character's Actions: (I'm kinda gonna compress these into noteworthy actions cos I'm a bit petered out. I shd be asleep by now but still wanted to try to play the game with Chae Young as my subject, lol) So CY from the start of the drama, has made her obvious disdain for her husband apparent for the viewer to see. She clearly starves him of her love and makes light of it. She connives with President Go to bring her husband down. She spies on him and goes against his wishes at every chance. She seeks out other men and stays in the hospital with a fabricated ailment probably because she's sick of living with her husband. She evetually gets smitten with Yong Pal, becos she likes his 'style'. She intially tries to get him to deliver Yeo Jin to her, then suddenly likes him for saving her from impending danger and being selfless and heartfelt in his chosen profession. He is also not interested in her, which makes the chase all the more amusing to her. She outs her infatuation with Yong Pal to her husband. She is willing to and does go to certain lengths to ensure Yong Pal's life's safety but is increasing beginning to look myopic in view due to her inability to fully comprehend what her husband is capable of and is over-relying on his obsession with her to give her a false sense of security.
She tell her husband she wants a divorce. She tells him she has no desire for him and is not willing to bear his offspring. She helps Tae Hyun escape the hospital and believes he also likes her despite his actions to the contrary. She helps her sister-in-law to make a comeback...

“Analyzing Plot Holes Story Bible Styles…”
I'm starting on a higher level comment so we have more room below to add our take on this character and the plot holes.
Character = Tae Hyun (Yong Pal)
A) The character’s background. - He comes from a poor family with abusive father who abandons the family and sick sister whose treatment is extremely expensive and has kept him in debt to money lenders. He's a great surgeon and highly respected by his superiors.
B) The character’s motivation. Primary Motivation-He has to get enough money constantly to pay for his sister's treatment and to keep the money lenders at bay. Secondary - should be to help Yeo Jin once his sister is safe but ....
C) The character’s relationships with other characters. - He loves his sister and feels guilt in accidentally causing her liver failure. He hates/disrespects his father. He approaches all sick and injured people as a doctor first. He grovels with superiors and make friends with gangsters. He trusts Nurse Ahjumma. He gains favor with Chae Young and Doo Chul. He is used by Yeo Jin, Do Joon, Pres Go. He likes Yeo Jin enough to want to be friends. He regards Man Sik as helper and friend. He knows that with Do Joon, he is expendable.
D) The character’s actions in each episode: 1 - He works as YP as well as Tae Hyun and maintains the image of money grubber. He tries to fleece a rich patient. He gets in trouble with Chief Lee. He senses something up in the restricted area. He sees his sister in hospital. He saves Doo Chul against all odds. (I'll be back!)

Con'tn Character's actions in each episode: 2 - Tae Hyun escapes with Doo Chul, earns the wrath of Detective Lee and the loyalty of Doo Chul, finds out who Young Ae on the 12th floor is, saves ICU patient Kim Young Min and earns the respect of Nurse Oh, has chat with Nurse Ahjumma and remembers how unfairly his mum was treated by the hospital, Det Lee almost catches him but Chief Lee does not reveal that he is YP and blackmails him into working on the 12th floor. Tae Hyun begs to be spared promising to do anything the hospital needs, calls his sister to check on her.
Episode 3 - Tae Hyun operates on Kim Young Min and stops Yeo Jin from killing herself, he starts work on the 12th floor and meets Cynthia, tells Man Sik he cannot take care of gangsters, gets noticed by Chae Young, goes to make a house call to save the girl raped by the celebrity, gets a makeover and 'meets' Young Ae officially as a doctor.
Episode 4 - Learns the situation with Han Shin, is forced to agree to give up surgery, hears that his sister's transplant is getting priority, meets Chae Young later blackmails him into letting her see Yeo Jin, calls his sister, meets Doo Chul in hospital and tells Man Sik he is worried the police will find him and his sister will die, gets put down by Nurse Hwang, stops celebrity's girlfriend from killing herself and everyone in hospital while worrying about his sister who is having dialysis, saves her and almost dies himself, visits his sister in hospital, gets an offer of money from Yeo Jin who recovers consciousness.
Episode 5 - Hides that Yeo Jin is alert, finds out that his sister will die unless he can get the right treatment, finds out her treatment will cost $1.5m- $2b with a liver in the US, Tae Hyun is desperate and wakes up Yeo Jin, talks to Yeo Jin and offers friendship.

Episode 6 - Tae Hyun saves the Kim Young Mi who tried to kill herself in protest against Han Shin, meets Pres Go who offers to save his sister in exchange for Yeo Jin, he reports this to Yeo Jin, hears from Chae Young that Do Joon will get Yeo Jin killed and agrees with her plan, takes Nurse Hwang's keys, assures Yeo Jin that he will not let her die, tells Cynthia that he is in with her, he enlists Nurse Ahjumma's help, gets shot while trying to get Yeo Jin out and finds out he is wheeling a dummy on the gurney.
Episode 7 - Tae Hyun gets back to Operating Theatre to save Yeo Jin whom Chief Lee declared dead, dream sequences, gets special treatment in the hospital because of Chae Young, takes Yeo Jin out to see a night time city view and says goodbye to Cynthia.
Episode 8 - Happy times in the hospital, TH tries to get Yeo Jin to eat, goes for dinner at Do Joon's home where he hears that Do Joon will kill everyone, escapes with Yeo Jin to the church, tells Yeo Jin that he is on the run from the police and that her funeral will be held soon.
Episode 9 - OTP sequences and kids at play. TH saves the illegal immigrant and goes to hospital with the priest, patient and baby.
Episode 10 - TH finds out that Nurse Hwang and Director are dead, is shocked that his sister is "hostage" in the VIP ward and tries to get her out unsuccessfully, TH begs Do Joon to save his sister and offers to kill himself, he writes a letter to Yeo Jin, takes his sister to the airport, saves Chief Lee who is stabbed, gets interrogated by Det Lee and is saved by a call from the Police Chief.

@GB
Brilliant job!
Before the plot holes, can we start with TY/YP's motivation? One of the patterns I see now that you've laid everything out is a desire to help everyone . Before I read this mini story bible, I thought that his motivation was to save his sister and thus it was weird that he neglected her to save YJ. But now that I read through this, it appears that it's his mother's death that is the trigger for all of his actions - he hated being powerless to save her - and now wants to save everyone. Yes, his sister, but also the gangsters, random people in the hospital, rich people in comas, rich people in sad marriages, the guy who is blackmailing him, more strangers, the doctor who blackmailed him, more gangsters, etc, etc.
If his motivation was simply to save his sister, then all the secret surgeries and his interaction with YJ would put that in
jeopardy. So, I suspect his role is 'savior'. And I wonder if him giving 'love' to YJ is merely saving her. There is a little foreshadowing from the nun's comment about 'I think he is an angel sent to save....'
Thoughts on this before we do the plot holes?
growingbeautifully

Hi @ Susan ??
Uber interesting.... "... a desire to help everyone . ... I thought that his motivation was to save his sister ..."
Me too. I put that down as the primary motivation. But trying to save everyone is not possible. Something will have to give. He will have to compromise.... dilemma and dilemna LOLOL! However, surely the sister who is dependent more on him than on his father has to be the main priority. He feels bad that he had a hand in making her sick, he became a doctor both because of his mum and his sister
"... it appears that it’s his mother’s death that is the trigger for all of his actions – he hated being powerless to save her – and now wants to save everyone." What struck me at that time was his lack of resentment that the VVIP got to be saved at the expense of his mum. He has totally no revenge arc in his character. If he wanted to have the power to save, it should still be to save his sister first before all others, I'd have thought.
"If his motivation was simply to save his sister, then all the secret surgeries and his interaction with YJ would put that in jeopardy. So, I suspect his role is ‘savior’. And I wonder if him giving ‘love’ to YJ is merely saving her. There is a little foreshadowing from the nun’s comment about ‘I think he is an angel sent to save….’ " He is definitely portrayed as the one who takes the action to save, the one Nurse Ahjumma and Nurse Oh will automatically expect to step up, the one who took the bullet for Yeo Jin, offers himself as sacrifice for his sister, offers friendship to all and sundry especially to Yeo Jin because he can tell she is lonely ... might be seen as a saviour complex.
susan
September 11, 2015 at 8:57 PM
So, what does everyone think? Is 'savior complex' the motivation for YP? Or is it something else? We have to resolve this before we can examine plot holes... bc his motivation defines his actions.

I just want to share this, the conversation of Yeojin and Taehyeon while he was piggybacking Yeojin up the hill in episode 9 on 33:30 - 34:20 mark, as it may add to what Taehyeon's motivations are.
Yeojin: That's why.. you become a doctor. Because you wanted to save So Hyeon?
Taehyeon: I wanted to be rich. In today's expression, I wanted to be the "Gab", the superior in any relationship. Due to poverty, So Hyeon could not get treated. The poverty which made my father a vicious drunk. Because I didn't like it. But ultimately, I became a criminal with a load of debt. Why is it that the more I try to be a Gab the more I become pitiful "Ul", the inferior? Perhaps I don't know my place?
I think Susan ?? is right in what she said that Taehyeon dissented being powerless. That was also the reason he gave in episode 2 on why his mom died at 40:35, "But what can I do? I realized too early that those things do not aid at all in saving a patient. The hospital is not a place where you do charitable work. My mother.. my mother died because I did not have power." It's interesting though why the writer left that our in his narration in episode 9 above (which can be another point for discussion).
And in having the 'savior complex', I think, as a doctor and a man in quest for power, it just innately developed within him. Since he may have felt powerful in doing so (saving lives). Like comic superheroes, they are perceived powerful because they save lives.

That's really interesting. So, power as a motivation with becoming a savior as the thing he wanted to have power to do? And 'powerful angel' who saves others..... I like it!
Anyone else have more ideas?

Here's my plot holes relating to Tae Hyun / Yong Pal for the first 4 episodes:
Episode 1: What happened to his debt from episode 1? He clearly didn’t pay it off. The loan shark seemed to be a go between TY/YP and someone higher up who leant the money. Who is this person and why aren’t they threatening TY/YP?
Episode 2: Why does anyone need to be blackmailed into working on the 12th floor? Couldn’t they effectively be blackmailed after they started working there? Or is it just that he had some blackmailable trait? In which case, shouldn’t everyone who works know about the hospital politics because they are similarly being blackmailed? Why did the hospital director and Director Lee treat the discovery of TY being blackmailable like it was a huge opportunity for them?
Episode 2: Shouldn’t there be A LOT of doctors who see the patients on the 12th floor? Hospitals have a lot of specialties: gastroenterologist, nephrologist, neurologist, pulmonologist, endocrinologist, etcetera, etcetera. Are they ALL only dedicated to the 12th floor? Do they all have to be blackmailed?
Episode 3: Why the set-up for house calls, a makeover and Cynthia as a side kick? Only two house calls are ever made in the series. He has a car for only two house calls? Even if President Go has achieved his objective and YJ is supposedly dead, wouldn’t TY’s other function (running around doing house calls and sucking up to important patients) continue?
Episode 4: Why would they want him to give up surgery? What other possible value could he have? Any blackmailable doctor can do meaningless rounds - he was in huge demand as a star surgeon - wouldn’t the people on the 12th floor still need surgeries?

Very thorough, @ Susan ??
About being blackmailed to work on the 12th floor – it is in Episode 3 that we see Cynthia telling TH to take care of the celebrity client and his reputation ... so the blackmail was to get a doctor who would be amenable to not divulging the crimes of 12th floor patients.
“Shouldn’t there be A LOT of doctors who see the patients on the 12th floor?” – I caught one part where Cynthia explained to TH that patients/guests arrived any time even without registering themselves and that there were doctors with latest equipment on call for the 12th floor all the time.
Episode 4 - I find it amazing that Yeo Jin speaks clearly when she awakes after 3 years. She out to have croaked or required a drink before being able to speak.
Episode 7 - You mentioned before. If Cynthia was the one who had arranged and located the suitable liver for TH's sister, then her leaving the hospital jeopardises the arrangement especially since in the end he did not deliver Yeo Jin to Pres Go.
Taking Yeo Jin out to the roof was foolhardy, if TH could make visits to the roof any number of other doctors could have done the same and recognised her. YJ has not been able to practise moving her legs since her 'death' so it's amazing that she can get out of the wheelchair and take quite a few steps. How a once gun toting Cynthia is allowed to roam the hospital again without security escort is interesting. How come TH was not nervous about leaving Cynthia and YJ alone... there was no reason to trust Cynthia. How did Cynthia know that YJ was alive and that she should play 'love' fairy?
Episode 8 - What was the motivation for taking Yeo Jin out of the hospital at that moment and going on vacation with his phone off?
Episode 8-9 - He seems to be very relaxed about his sister whom he no longer is shown to be worried about, (out of character for him) although she is in as much danger of being a hostage as ever, and especially so when he disappears and neither Do Joon, Go nor Chae Young know where he is.
Episode 10-11 - Why is Chief Lee in Han Shin and neglected by all his colleagues?
yong82
September 12, 2015 at 1:34 AM
@Susan??
Episode 1: It was still there. Remember the scene at the Prison/Throne Room? When he was talking on the phone with Manshik and him telling the total so far of his debt minus all the earnings from being Yongpal? Where not-coma Yeo Jin was listening to it and eventually bribed him with her "should I give you the money? Should I save your sister?"
@Episode 2: The opportunity just presented itself to Chief Lee. He put two and two together and used it to bring Tae Hyun's peg down (have him bow down to him and lessened TH's arrogance with him) and at the same time blackmailed him to serve at the 12th floor. It of course eased his workload, and they now have an escapegoat. Remember how Chief Lee even suggested to let Tae Hyun handle killing Yeo Jin instead, so they wouldn't be involved in her murder.
Chief Lee is the primary attending physician. He calls up on other services for co-management. I think it was a selected pool of doctors from different services. Because of the sensitive situations and VVIP in the 12th floor, people who worked there must be handpicked. Whether they were bribed or not was not discussed or touched by the drama. But I don't think it needed to and it won't really affect the storyline anyway.
p.s. when you wrote TY you meant Tae Hyun (TH), right?
Episode 3: It was a transition for him being doctor to the gangsters to doctor to the VVIPs. He needed a transformation to fit his current position in the 12th floor. He had to look presentable for all the VVIPs so they would treat him a bit better than if he was to come to them in his previous types of clothes. I think Cynthia said that in Episode 3 (when she was showing him his room and the one with the pen she gave him). His house calls were just an added service thought up by Chief Lee (inspired by his Yongpal works) and not really his main work. They'd do that if there's a need for it. After Yeo Jin supposedly 'died' , remember that Tae Hyun was shot and was recovering from it. He wouldn't be assigned house calls that fast already? Then he filed a leave and escaped with Yeo Jin to the church and the hills. Went back to being Yongpal when trying to save the pregnant mom. and blurred the VIP lines in the 12th floor by bringing that pregnant mom/mom who just gave birth there. And then he learned that his colleagues were one by one killed or missing. And the rest is history. Storywise, wouldn't injecting a house call every now and then take away from the plot about Yeo Jin and corporate brouhaha?
Episode 4: He was at the General Surgery floor prior which means he gets to do surgeries often. Cases at the 12th floor are varied and may not always need surgery. He could still do them, just not as much as he was doing before. So, I guess it's the reason why he cannot give up being Yongpal and treating gangsters, immigrants, etc. He even said that it's the only thing he really wanted to do and Chief Lee was taking it away from him. Either...
yong82
September 12, 2015 at 1:35 AM
... because of Chief Lee's pride (remember how he asked for TH help in Ep1) or just because of the demands of the 12th floor.
p.s. I, too, think that TH has this "must save all" mentality. Even when he's bleeding and almost passing out, he still promised to Nurse Oh that he'll operate on Kim Young Mi. It was a nice thought @Susan ?? that it all stemmed from his mom's death and his inability to do anything to help her. Yongpal-ing was a compensation for that experience.

Epi 3. Why the set up for house calls, makeover, Cynthia, etc...? First off, YP does start out as an attending physician to crooks in warehouses... which is another strand of house call. He uses his car for those trips and im even suspecting now, that the car might be an arrangement with him and Man Shik... whom I think is his ACTUAL loan shark, as in, he is not the go-between... Man Shik did lend YP some money he probably raised through his criminal activities, and that's how come he is so motivated with getting YP to pay back. Plus, even if he's just the lackey and there is a main boss man sending him to do all the dirty work, it would be usual in that line of work.
YP needed a blackmailable trait to get on the 12th floor because Chief Lee and the Director knew he was gonna come into contact with YJ and their underhanded deals which were very well going to end in them murdering her. If YP had nothing to lose, he would be less amenable to them. I think they only said he had to give up surgery department becos by bringing him to the 12th floor, they were effectively taking him out of the Surgery department where he had hoped to be a Fellow.
The makeover was needed becos he needed to look the part of a respectable doc on the 12th floor. Appearances would mean a lot to those calibre of people and Cynthia said something that pushed that idea later in the office with the magnificent view when she said "their clients pay loads of money and can't be standing in corridors to sign agreements with doctors in 'scrubs or slippers or something'" lol. Pardon me. I forget.
Cynthia was a face of the floor. Its a luxurious floor... it could do with luxurious face. It definitely added a certain je-sais-quoi to the calibre of the floor... but I don't think Cynthia was overly necessary for the continued development of the plot. She was President Go's minion and once she had done his bidding and Go got wanted he wanted indirectly, she felt free to leave. It think it was as simple as that.
Oh yeah, amd I think if YJ had died, we would have definitely had more house calls! What else would Yong Pal be doing? The story has become how it is simply because YJ didn't die and is now fighting for her throne back... so house calls can take a backseat for a bit. Thkuverymuch.

I hope you don't mind me dropping by here and there. I just wanted to express what I thought and understood of what the drama presented.
@Growingbeautifully
Episode 4 – For the medical aspects of this drama, you just have to suspend your disbelief. Technically, Yeo Jin should have more tubes on her (for food and for breathing) but it won't look pretty on screen and would be an obstacle in carrying out the plot. I am taking it as an artistic license. If show would stick to the reality as closely as possible, then there'd be no drama. Afterall, this is not a documentary.
Episode 7 – Cynthia was working for President Go so naturally Pres. Go, or his minion ,would know of the arrangement. Because of the alliance of Pres Go and Do Joon, Cynthia was able to live and roam at the hospital to say her goodbyes. Being the smart girl that she is, she decided to stay away from all this and go to the States to avoid being killed by Go/Do Joon.
Taking Yeo Jin to the roof is really dangerous, I admit. She needed that though after the near-death situation and all that happened. Tae Hyun promised her that he would get her out and that was the closest thing to "out" that he could give her then. He said it so himself in this episode.
It was not shown whether Yeo Jin was practicing moving her legs prior to the rooftop scene, but at the end of Episode 5 we were shown that TH and YJ were doing physical therapy. The show did not fully show him and YJ progressing with physical therapy but it was where it was heading. Some may not appreciate this show's style of read-between-the lines and would want it to show explicitly, but it is what I appreciate in this show.
Seeing the "outside world" for the first time in 3 years may have given her a surge of energy. Of course, in real life it may not be as swift as that. But they somehow compromised these two by having her legs give way in the next scene.
Tae Hyun actually looked nervous leaving Cynthia and Yeo Jin alone. But I think, because he thinks that Cynthia thinks that Yeo Jin is dead, that Cynthia would not consider the woman sitting there as Yeo Jin. But, Cynthia is quick to catch on to things and probably knows how Yeo Jin looks like and so she put two and two together (why Tae Hyun took the bullet for Yeo Jin, why Tae Hyun kept asking Cynthia about Yeo Jin) and played the 'love fairy' as you said.
Episode 8 – To make true of his promise to Yeo Jin that he will take her out of the hospital? And seeing the mood of Yeo Jin and her feeling of being a crocodile pushed out of the water by Tae Hyun, Tae Hyun wanted to give her this other option, of living life with him instead.
Episode 8-9 – Tae Hyun was still banking on Do Joon's bribe to send his sister abroad for treatment (discussed during the dinner scene in Ep 8). He still has no idea of the deaths and disappearances of the "workers of the pyramid" (Hospital Director, Nurse Hwang, Chief Lee). That is why he was...

...surprised to see his father in the hospital and at the 12th floor at that. Because he thought that So Hyun was at home, but then he learned that Do Joon already has her captive.
So Hyun goes to the hospital for dialysis and was not really admitted. Although it would have helped clear the confusion if show who have shown she was discharged after her last admission.
Episode 10-11 – The emergency service personnel received a call (probably Do Joon's underlings' work) to bring Chief Lee to Hanshin instead so Do Joon et al could kill him cleanly. Nobody has the gut to disobey orders from above on not to operate Chief Lee (mentioned by Nurse Oh) and that is why his colleagues were 'ignoring' him.
@Affie I realized we're posting the same things. haha! So I guess it's good that I am not the only one who understood these things from the drama. *high five*

First off, the rules. There are always parts in a drama where a viewer can make their own conclusion which is different from speculation. For example, a scene shows A leaving the office and next is A is at home. We can assume that A took some mode of transport or walk back, right? If A brings back some fried chicken back home, we can assume A bought them on the way back. Let’s go with this.
Ep 1 – Did you speculate that Man Shik had someone higher up? It wasn’t shown. But let’s say Man Shik had funds from a 'higher source', those higher ups won't bother to do Man Shik's work and chase after YP unless Man Shik cannot deliver his part. If I may borrow from My Beautiful Bride' story, these people will then go after the "bad debt" and make them pay. It's also not like Yong Pal disappeared for months. What's the timeline here? 3 weeks? Probably, the interest is piling up, that's all.
Ep 2 - How can you effectively blackmail someone when you don't even know if they can be blackmailed. Suppose, they let TH start to work on the 12th floor and be privy to things happening. Then they blackmail him to keep it a secret to which TH says "Just go and report me to the police! I am tired of running away." Is this a scenario which they are willing to risk?
How can you equate knowing hospital politics to being blackmailed. Anyone who works in an organization will face and know its politics, that does not mean all are blackmailed. Following hospital or superior's orders without question is just subordination. You can argue lack of morals but not call it being blackmailed.
Director and Chief Lee treated the discovery of TH as YP as being blackmailable because instead of the usual bribing doctors with promotions or threatening them with no real hold, they can blackmail TH to abide their orders otherwise they would report him to the police. They probably haven’t found any doctor in Hanshin who they know has committed a crime.
Ep 3 If they didn’t try to kill YJ, who is to say TH won't continue his house calls. So I don’t see any issue with him having the makeover. I enjoyed the exciting plot development from ep 3 running up to murder attempt on YJ in ep 6 and would rather watch that then seeing TH doing a couple more house calls.
Ep 4 Only Director wanted TH to give up surgery, not Chief Lee. Look at Chief Lee’s face when Director told TH that. The value of TH on the 12th floor is simply that they have a doctor who they think is completely under their control. Everything else is secondary. TH is like a doctor in charge there and probably when the situation arise or depending on client’s condition, he can call for the specialist from the relevant department to come in. This specialist just does when he’s told to do without having to know or told what exactly happens on the 12th floor.
For those points you raised, I don't see any would qualify as plot holes.

Although you @Susan ?? said that we should just focus on what was shown in the drama in analyzing the 'plotholes', I don't think we could leave the assumptions if it was confirmed in the next episodes (although not shown explicitly). I think that it is the style of this drama not to show everything and explain in detail how this happened or why this happened. And probably, that's where the confusion lies for some, and the excitement for others.

@Susan ?? 6.2.2.1.8
1. I think Manshik is the typical Kdrama loan shark who just remits whatever he collected to the boss, and as long as he collects a decent amount he's okay. Remember Yongpal's phone conversation with Manshik in episode 3 when Yongpal ask Manshik if he's reason being frustrated about the fact that Yongpal can't do house calls for gangsters anymore is because his collection would decrease? But Manshik could just collect some more from other borrowers and be a little lenient to Yongpal of awhile, while Yongpal waits for a crown to fall from the sky. I think this is too shallow of a plot hole to be concerned about. Besides, without doing house calls for gangsters Taehyun gets tips from 12F VIPs, maybe he's still paying off his loan as usual using that? We don't know, but can only use our imaginations. I don't think the director needs to show those tiny details anymore. Even Manshik's "boss", I think he's too insignificant to be shown.
2. I think not anyone being assigned to 12F but anyone who has/will have an access to the restricted area. In episode 2, in Chief Lee's his phone conversation with the Director, after Chief Lee confronted Taehyeon being Yongpal, it suggests that they we're looking for additional man power in the restricted are and Taehyeon is a perfect fit for the job. Since as they know his weakness and he can be bought by money, he's a guy that wont tattle about the restricted are being a crime scene and he would just do what he is told. And in episode 4, Cynthia explained to Taehyun how 12F operates with all doctors who are specialist from each field being on standby, I don't thing those doctors are being blackmailed in anyway.
3. I don't think they need to show each and every house calls Taehyun makes for the 12F VIPs, only those that are essential to the plot. Just like when Taehyun was caught by Nurse Hwang sleeping in Yeojin's room. He reasoned out the he just had a house call the previous night and he's tired. I don't think that was a lie, they just didn't show us that he indeed attend to a house call.
4. I think it's not totally giving-up surgery. In the restaurant conversation amount Chief Lee, Hospital Director, and Taehyeon. The Director said to Taehyeon, "it might be hard for you to use the scalpel in the operating room." The operative word was "might", just like Chief Lee, who was before a Chief Surgeon, being the chief of the 12F, performing surgeries for him became less frequent. I think one reason is because they are to manage Yeojin very well, almost 24/7. And just basically do rounds and client pleasing in the 12F, the surgeries are to be done by the specialists on each fields. And they (Chief Lee and Taehyeon) would just do surgeries when needed/directed by the Director. Just like in episode 6, Taehyeon did the house call for Kim Youngmi, but it was Chief Shin who operated on her.
For me, one plot hole, or I guess more of an inconsistency that I didn't...

...For me, one plot hole, or I guess more of an inconsistency that I didn't like was the kiss at the end of episode 8. For me the scene would have been more poignant if it had ended with the Taehyun just caressing Yeojin's hand tenderly. I think the director thought of having that kiss would gave the viewers a fan service, but for me it didn't. Yeojin just asked Taehyun to wait and Taehyun agreed. Even though with Yeojin's confession that at that moment Taehyun is the only person to whom she can make that one call, he need not to go all the way and kiss her. Not that I'm against the OTP's romance, I'm actually all for it, except for that kiss. And not that they can't do it, and it's a crime to do it, since they are both consenting adults. It's just that I find it inconsistent to the conversation they had a few minus prior the kiss. And if perhaps, if Teahyun showed a "holy restraint", I think the scene would have been grander. We and Yeojin could have witnessed that he's a person of true depth and intimacy who Yeojin can trust and who can assure her with his silence (not that he is not, but that he could have been perceived as more). Also, not to mention that I think it would have made the kiss scene in atop of the hill in episode 9 more poignant and extra special as well.

As far as I see, no plot holes in those you mentioned.
Ep 4 – How do you know that this is the first time Yeo Jin speaks? She has been coming into consciousness gradually and we can neither prove that was or was not the first time Yeo Jin regain consciousness. If I cannot assume she has spoken prior to TH entering the room, neither can you assume she has not. From my knowledge with patients on drip and get their water intravenously, the caretaker or in this case, the hardworking obsessed Nurse Hwang would have swab her lips, mouth and throat to keep their moist. So, they won’t be dry.
Ep 7 – Are you assuming that Cynthia is the only person who can make such arrangement? If Do Joon was desperate to get TH’s sister treatment out of the way so that TH can “disappear”, why can’t Do Joon have more resources at his command than Cynthia?
You can say TH took a risk in taking YJ up to the roof but this is not a plot hole. Many dramas have characters taking all sorts of risks and a lot crazier than this one. For one, TH appeared careful and it was in the night. Moreover, very likely the 12th floor is the highest in Hanshin so all the doctors would be in the floors below. All TH need to do is to go up one or two levels to the rooftop.
The gun didn’t belong to Cynthia and now that President Go and DJ are in the thick together, Cynthia is one of their own, so the security won’t stop her.
Wasn’t it obvious that TH didn’t know that Cynthia recognize YJ? TH introduced YJ as his patient. Instead of acting nervous and looking suspicious, TH just let the 2 women be because he didn’t know Cynthia recognized YJ.
Why do you think Cynthia knows YJ is alive? She could simply have looked for TH to bid farewell and knowing that he likes going up to the rooftop for fresh air, she went up to look for him. Then she sees YJ, recognizes her but doesn’t give it away to TH. She distracts him to go and buy coffee so that she can have a private word with YJ.
Cynthia concluded that TH was in love with YJ because Cynthia didn’t know that TH had struck a deal with YJ for USD2 million. So she can only conclude that TH threw away President Go’s offer to go to YJ’s side because he loves her.
Ep 8 Vacation? You really think TH took YJ out for a holiday? He knew that it was dangerous for YJ to stay on in the hospital. One day the bandages got to come off and you know what would happen next, right? Plus, he knew that they were planning to hold her funeral soon and the fact that she’s not dead will be out. Moreover, he just had a conversation with her which sounded to him like she would give up and go to President Go’s side. From his point of view, that’s suicidal. So, he took her out for 2 reasons. One, to remove her from immediate danger. Two, to get her to confront her past and make a decision for her future – go with President Go or with him.
Ep 8-9 Again, did you assume that he didn’t call his sister...

Ep 8-9 Again, did you assume that he didn’t call his sister to check on her? I do not know how long was he unconscious after his surgery but if you can assume he didn’t call his sister, I can assume that he did At the point when he took YJ out of the hospital, his sister was not taken as hostage yet. She was called to go to the hospital only the day before TH returned meaning the same day/night that TH brought the pregnant woman to Hanshin.

4. Yes, there's a bit of a plot hole here, but I could forgive it compared to what happened in Kill Me, Heal Me when Cha Dohyeon's dad who was in a 20-years coma was able to walk, kneel, and ask for forgiveness. Even that I dismissed, so why not this? I mean, this is a drama, where I would favor a better "story" over a better "logic". Though it would be best to have both, but I guess we can't have that at all times.
7. I agree that there's a few here as well. But I don't think Cynthia arranged something for Taehyeon. He simply asked her help if Seohyeon could possible have an immune system transformation and liver transplant treatment in US. Her, leaving in episode 8 and Hanshin Giving Foundation taking care of Seohyeon's treatment in episode 10. Nothing was jeopardized.
In taking Yeojin to the rooftop, nobody would recognize her aside from those who have met her before the accident. Even the chief of security didn't know who Yeojin was in episode 12. And again, just like my answer in #4, I didn't mind that Yeojin was able to get out of the wheelchair. I could even give them some praise for trying here.
About Cynthia being safe, I'm not sure as well, since she is supposed to be part of the "pyramid" building. But maybe because she was never involved in the dealings inside the restricted area (was never in the crime scene except the time when they rolled the dummy Yeojin to the secret elevator down to the basement) and technically haven't seen Yeojin's face (no association with the victim) that's why she was left off?
I did caught Taehyeon being apprehensive to leave Yeojin with Cynthia, that's why Cynthia needs to prod the fact that Taehyeon betrayed her to make him leave and get them coffee.
How did Cynthia know Yeojin is alive and she should play love fairy? Given her character, I don't think that needs explanation. And why that is even a plot hole?
8. Because Dojun just announced during the dinner that he's about to announce Yeojin's obituary and have a funeral for her soon and that means they would be caught that the body in the mortuary is not Yeojin's. Which means them being caught. Thus, as per Taehyeon's logic, they need to flee.
8-9. Yes, he seems too relaxed, but I guess since dad is with her, and Yeojin didn't have anyone, he chose to be with Yeojin for awhile. Maybe a call or two to Seohyeon whould have helped since in the previous episodes it was showed that he does call her from time to time. But he never did during the times when the OTP romance was in a hype.
10-11. I think this was answered in episode 11 when Taehyeon confronted Taeyong, that Taeyong should give chief Lee the surgery that he needs.

@ EVERYONE! :-)
Omo! So many people playing. Daebak!
I’m going to try to keep the holes and responses organized.
First, a couple of responses to comments:
First off, the rules. There are always parts in a drama where a viewer can make their own conclusion which is different from speculation. For example, a scene shows A leaving the office and next is A is at home. We can assume that A took some mode of transport or walk back, right? If A brings back some fried chicken back home, we can assume A bought them on the way back. Let’s go with this.
Ah! So, let me explain the reason for the rule.
In development, when we leave something unshown or unsaid in the story, it is for three reasons: 1) It doesn’t matter - as SS pointed out, we can assume that the fried chicken that appeared was bought to be eaten - the plot hardly hinges on this small matter, or 2) we didn’t think that it would matter - we assumed that the audience would understand things in exactly the same way we did - only audiences can easily come to different conclusions, or 3) we screwed up - we weren’t careful about creating the story - we knew the background in our heads (bc we developed that in the story bible) - but we didn’t write down enough details in the narrative for the audience to understand.
The point of doing plot holes story bible styles is to discover where the plot holes are - were we weren’t consistent / thorough in our storytelling - and suggest fixes.

I guess it was difficult to inject such scene because surely he needs to borrow a phone or look for a pay phone like Nurse Hwang because he can't call through his cell phone since he would have been tracked. And him being surprised that she's on the 12F the night he came to the hospital, it just shows the he knew her whereabouts a day/days before. And as per his conversation with Nurse Ahjumma about why did he come back, why was his phone off, and if he didn't turned it off she could have told him the situation and told him not to come back. He answered that he would have come back anyways because Seohyeon is being held as hostage. It means even though his phone was off, he could have known how Seohyeon was doing, and go back anyways.

(1/2)
Episode 1: What happened to his debt from episode 1? He clearly didn’t pay it off. The loan shark seemed to be a go between TY/YP and someone higher up who leant the money. Who is this person and why aren’t they threatening TY/YP?
6.2.2.1.10 yong82
Episode 1: It was still there. Remember the scene at the Prison/Throne Room? When he was talking on the phone with Manshik and him telling the total so far of his debt minus all the earnings from being Yongpal? Where not-coma Yeo Jin was listening to it and eventually bribed him with her “should I give you the money? Should I save your sister?”
Ah,yes, but she never did it! So that problem was never solved. It just disappeared for many episodes. So, still a plot hole.
6.2.2.1.16 SS
Did you speculate that Man Shik had someone higher up? It wasn’t shown.
It was shown (discussed). There was a phone call in episode 4? between them when Man Shik alluded to having to report to someone else about TY’s debt.
6.2.2.1.16 SS
But let’s say Man Shik had funds from a ‘higher source’, those higher ups won’t bother to do Man Shik’s work and chase after YP unless Man Shik cannot deliver his part. If I may borrow from My Beautiful Bride’ story, these people will then go after the “bad debt” and make them pay. It’s also not like Yong Pal disappeared for months. What’s the timeline here? 3 weeks? Probably, the interest is piling up, that’s all.
Okay, so you’ve discovered another plot hole - “What’s the timeline here? 3 weeks?” This is a serious problem. None of us can estimate time in this show. A lot of stuff has happened that I think would have taken a lot longer than 3 weeks from the time YP blew off his loan shark: intrigue, battles, recovering from the gunshot wound and coma, visiting the Sound of Music mountain, coming back and running around more… So, we’re coming to different conclusions because not enough information is given and it leads to different interpretations over the importance of the loan shark / debt arc (which pretty much defined episode 1).
The other issue - about what loan sharks will do when someone doesn’t pay debt - brings up something else that happens when writing for a platform (in this case TV or film). If lots of other productions use a trope and the audience is familiar with it, then it becomes both believable or the standard expectation for the audience. Let me explain: smartscreens. You know those high tech, perfectly clear computer screens where information is displayed all over them and people can swipe their hands to move the information around? They’re ubiquitous in spy movies and American TV shows - so much that there is a standard name for them: smartscreens. Only they don’t exist (okay, one manufacture tried to make a much much simpler version) except in all these shows. But, because we’ve seen them in 100s of shows, they’ve become an accepted technology...

(2/2)
The same thing applies to the behavior of loan sharks. In real life, most of us probably haven’t met a loan shark. We have no idea how they behave. But, in most Korean TV shows we’ve watched, if you don’t pay them regularly, they show up, threaten you and break stuff. So, that’s the audience expectation. If they’re going to behave any differently than that (even if it’s much more in line with reality than this ‘show behavior’), the show has to explain it.
Which brings me to SS’s expectation of only 3 weeks having passed. That’s because we’re used to seeing monthly payments for people with loan shark debt. So, in order to make sense of the lack of loan sharks showing up in YP’s life, the time that passed has to be under a month. She’s assumed 3 weeks. For me, that doesn’t make sense - all the things that have happened seem like they would take much longer than 3 weeks.
So, we have a plot hole - either there’s a problem with the timeline (the audience shouldn’t have radically different ideas about it) or there’s a problem with the loan shark arc.
6.2.2.1.18 Vgy7*uhb
I think Manshik is the typical Kdrama loan shark who just remits whatever he collected to the boss, and as long as he collects a decent amount he’s okay. Remember Yongpal’s phone conversation with Manshik in episode 3 when Yongpal ask Manshik if he’s reason being frustrated about the fact that Yongpal can’t do house calls for gangsters anymore is because his collection would decrease? But Manshik could just collect some more from other borrowers and be a little lenient to Yongpal of awhile, while Yongpal waits for a crown to fall from the sky. I think this is too shallow of a plot hole to be concerned about. Besides, without doing house calls for gangsters Taehyun gets tips from 12F VIPs, maybe he’s still paying off his loan as usual using that? We don’t know, but can only use our imaginations. I don’t think the director needs to show those tiny details anymore. Even Manshik’s “boss”, I think he’s too insignificant to be shown.
“We don’t know, but can only use our imaginations.” The fact that you can’t figure it out without making a story in your head to explain it away pretty much shows that it’s a plot hole. Basically, that’s the definition of a plot hole - something unexplained and unobvious that the audience is left to puzzle over. It’s definitely not done on purpose in production.
.
.
So, given that there’s either a timeline plot hole or a loan shark plot hole - what would you do to fill one or the other?
What I would do: I would have had Man Shik have a conversation with his higher up and have that person ask MS why YP can no longer do surgeries. I would have the higher up tell MS that YP is valuable, so not to bother him yet. I would then have Doo Chul’s appearance in the hospital be partially linked to YP’s debt and connection to the gangsters (beyond himself)...

I would just leave it as is. I wouldn't want Ducheol to be involved and payoff all Yongpal's debt because that would mean Yongpal will have no reason to do gangster house calls anymore. I also don't think Manshik would negotiate for Yongpal to his bosses, it he would just let the interest pile up and have poor Taehyeon deal with it later. It' would be out of character for him to help Taehyeon since he only care for his butt. Like when they were helping Ducheol to espcase, he bailed out. When Ducheol asked him where Yongpal is, he gave it right away. In the police interrogation, the reason he kept mum was because of Ducheol's warning. And he tattled Yongpal to the police on episode 12 in exchange for his freedom (though I'm glad that he changed his mind in the end).

We'll he's taking care more VIPs now so I'd rather him use the tips he get from them to payoff his debt rather than involving Ducheol. Not to mention that he also get tips from the Director. And doesn't need to pay for Sohyeon's treatments anymore. Basically, he has more money now. So he has more ability to pay now without doing gangster house calls. And I like how the show is making use of Ducheol's debt to Yongpal for saving his life in a way that does not involve money and I want them to stick to that. :)

Episode3: Where YJ tried to kill herself with a glass shard. Later episodes showed she had to struggle to just lift her hand since her muscles had atrophied. How then was she able to grab the glass shard, hold it to her neck, have enough strength to grip it tightly enough to cut herself and her neck?

You know what? I just think that was sheer will, baby! Just sheer will...YJ kept reliving her nightmare in her comatose state so each time she woke up, she was stark raving mad. Adrenaline kicks in when you are that angry and for a moment, you have the sheer will to do all kinds of "strong" things though you might typically be weak. Sure the atrophied muscles can't just be explained away but in physiotherapy, sheer will plays a major role in getting people to recovery.
I think the same surge of emotions and adrenaline kick can be used toexplain the steps she took on the rooftop. She did fall over eventually so I dont think production really over exaggerating her recovery. There is still room for make-belief. And you might even be surprised that some of these amazing recoveries could happen to some individuals in real life.
when she first spoke, without croaking and not having even sipped water, I did think... eh-heh? However, she had been lucid for awhile, hearing all of YP's musings. Maybe she swallowed her saliva a couple of times, lol. Plus, it wasnt that long of a sentence to say and she did say it slowly, making sure to enunciate each word.

I would answer you the same as how I answered @Growingbeautifully in 6.2.2.1.9. Yes, there's a bit of a plot hole here, but I could forgive it compared to what happened in Kill Me, Heal Me when Cha Dohyeon’s dad who was in a 20-years coma was able to walk, kneel, and ask for forgiveness. Even that I dismissed, so why not this? I mean, this is a drama, and I would gladly favor a better "story" over a better "logic". Though of course it would be best to have both, but I guess we can't have that at all times. I could even give them some praise for showing that she's struggling and for trying their best to give both story and logic.

Thanks @ Vgy7*uhb
I should perhaps re-phrase to say that it seemed pretty reckless of him to have left his sister at all. :) Why did he feel it necessary at that time to disappear with Yeo Jin and leave his sister?
If we take conjecture out of the situation that preceded it.... he has just heard a drunk Do Joon boasting that he has killed and can just kill all who are in his way. But at this stage TH knows that DJ thinks YJ is really dead. So YJ should not be in danger from DJ. We also see that TH gets to hear the story of Sung Joon and YJ. The next thing we see is that he has something to inject into YJ so that she remains asleep until she finds herself being driven to the church. Why and why at this point in the story?
Without guessing and trying to impute a whole lot of 'reasonable' reasons why, it seems pretty sudden, and on top of that he leaves as "hostage" his beloved sister. :)

@ Growingbeautifully 6.2.2.3.1
Didn't Taehyeon explained that to Yeojin, before they kissed in episode 8? That because the police had tracked in Hanshin and because Dojun just announced during the dinner that he's about have a funeral for Yeojin and that means they would be caught soon. Him by the police and Yeojin if they found that the body in the mortuary is not Yeojin’s. Thus, as per Taehyeon’s logic, they need to flee first and think what to do next. He was actually thinking to house calls when he goes back (since he'll be caught by the police at Hanshin), he's a doctor anyways. To which Yeojin replied that if she didn't were he really going to leave?.. and you know what happened next. So I think it was not intentional to leave his sister. Pretty reckless I suppose, but if he's caught, his sister is as good as dead, just like how he declared in episode 1 before he jump off the bridge.
And at the dinner, Dojun bribed him to get his sister treated, and we know that Dojun followed through the deal (at first) since Taehyeon was expecting his sister to be at home and preparing to leave for US the next morning and was surprised to see her admitted on the 12F. He even asked if she was fine, why was she in the hospital. Seohyeon told him he was fine and that she got called to go to the hospital other day. He didn't thought his sister would be harmed at first since Dojun was following through their deal. Though obviously, Dojun backed-off later, and I think Dojun it happened the moment Chaeyoung warned him not to touch Taehyeon.
Also, he didn't expect that Dojun would go on a killing spree or should I say President Go (or at least not that fast?), since he's the one who suggested that the "pyramid builders" should be killed. He we saw how shocked he was when he knew that Nurse Hwang and the Director were dead and Chief Lee was missing.
It's hard to get all the bases covered, he's not superman anyway, but at least he tried.

I realized after reading this comment
6.2.2.1.17 yong82
Although you @Susan ?? said that we should just focus on what was shown in the drama in analyzing the ‘plotholes’, I don’t think we could leave the assumptions if it was confirmed in the next episodes (although not shown explicitly).
that my naming system for plot holes wasn’t particularly clear. I just introduced a plot hole in my plot hole game!! :-) So, to try to be clearer, the naming convention ‘Episode 2’ means ‘Things that came to light in Episode 2 and later became plot holes….’
.
.
6.2.2.1.8 Susan
6.2.2.1.9 Growingbeautifully
About being blackmailed to work on the 12th floor – it is in Episode 3 that we see Cynthia telling TH to take care of the celebrity client and his reputation … so the blackmail was to get a doctor who would be amenable to not divulging the crimes of 12th floor patients.
“Shouldn’t there be A LOT of doctors who see the patients on the 12th floor?” – I caught one part where Cynthia explained to TH that patients/guests arrived any time even without registering themselves and that there were doctors with latest equipment on call for the 12th floor all the time.
Okay, so your interpretation is that the attending physician is the one most likely to discover the patient’s crimes and thus must be blackmailed. As the other doctors are only ‘visiting’ the 12th floor, they’re less likely to notice.
I can sort of accept this reasoning. Physicians aren’t the most perspicacious lot I’ve ever met. But, this still means that every nurse and doctor assigned full time to that floor would also have to be blackmailed or bribed to keep everything secret. And this kind of niggles at my brain. Because remember that nurse who always wanted TY to buy her coffee? She used to work on the 12th floor. Shouldn’t she know what’s going on politically? And yet she doesn’t appear to. So this implies that the nurses aren’t blackmailed/bribed. And that doesn’t work for me. Because nurses are the gossip center of a...

6.2.2.1.10 yong82
Episode 2: The opportunity just presented itself to Chief Lee. He put two and two together and used it to bring Tae Hyun’s peg down (have him bow down to him and lessened TH’s arrogance with him) and at the same time blackmailed him to serve at the 12th floor.
This is certainly true.
6.2.2.1.10 yong82
It of course eased his workload, and they now have an escapegoat. Remember how Chief Lee even suggested to let Tae Hyun handle killing Yeo Jin instead, so they wouldn’t be involved in her murder.
The workload bit is pure conjecture. We actually have no reason why they wanted to recruit TY. The scapegoat bit came up well after they blackmailed him. Neither the Hospital Director nor Chief Surgeon Lee knew when they ‘hired’ TY that later ‘YJ’ would need to be killed and they would need a scapegoat.
6.2.2.1.10 yong82
Chief Lee is the primary attending physician. He calls up on other services for co-management. I think it was a selected pool of doctors from different services. Because of the sensitive situations and VVIP in the 12th floor, people who worked there must be handpicked.
This is also my understanding.
6.2.2.1.10 yong82
Whether they were bribed or not was not discussed or touched by the drama. But I don’t think it needed to and it won’t really affect the storyline anyway.
I agree, whether they were bribed or not was definitely not touched by the drama.
On the other hand - I think it’s very important to the story line to know the parameters of why YP needed to be blackmailed (it’s one of the major premises of the story, after all) - and if it’s for secrecy - then it’s also important to know that everyone else on the 12th floor has the same restrictions. Because if they don’t, it undermines the believability of this premise. There’s a lot of people there who could easily see who the patients are, surmise what’s going on, and tell others. So, somehow, they all need to be kept quiet.
Although… you could argue that YP is a kind of ‘front lines’ physician. He arranges for people to come to the hospital under dodgy circumstances and then, once the cover story is in place, they interact with the nurses and other physicians.
You know, a line or two of dialogue is all they would have needed to go in this direction and it would have nicely cleaned up this plot hole.

6.2.2.1.16 SS
Ep 2 – How can you effectively blackmail someone when you don’t even know if they can be blackmailed.
Pretty easily. Once they see something you don’t want public, threaten them with something they fear - physical harm, jail, death, hurting a loved one, loss of professional license, the possibilities are really endless. The important thing is that they believe you credibly can and will carry out those threats.
6.2.2.1.16 SS
Suppose, they let TH start to work on the 12th floor and be privy to things happening. Then they blackmail him to keep it a secret to which TH says “Just go and report me to the police! I am tired of running away.” Is this a scenario which they are willing to risk?
Is it a scenario YP is willing to risk either? Going to jail is tantamount to losing your medical license and your livelihood. Most people are scare of that. And then there’s all the other options… physical harm, jail, death, hurting a loved one, etc…
How can you equate knowing hospital politics to being blackmailed. Anyone who works in an organization will face and know its politics, that does not mean all are blackmailed. Following hospital or superior’s orders without question is just subordination. You can argue lack of morals but not call it being blackmailed.
I confess that I’m confused here. I haven’t equated hospital politics to being blackmailed.
I think they can pretty much threaten other doctors quite effectively as well. And, as I mentioned above, reporting him to the police is only one of many options for a credible threat.
6.2.2.1.18 Vgy7*uhb
2. I think not anyone being assigned to 12F but anyone who has/will have an access to the restricted area. In episode 2, in Chief Lee’s his phone conversation with the Director, after Chief Lee confronted Taehyeon being Yongpal, it suggests that they we’re looking for additional man power in the restricted are and Taehyeon is a perfect fit for the job.
Did they? That’s interesting. If that’s the case, then it well explains why they recruited him.
Since as they know his weakness and he can be bought by money, he’s a guy that wont tattle about the restricted are being a crime scene and he would just do what he is told.
That seems to be what the show indicated.
And in episode 4, Cynthia explained to Taehyun how 12F operates with all doctors who are specialist from each field being on standby, I don’t thing those doctors are being blackmailed in anyway.
Which bugs me. They do have eyes and ears...

@Susan ?? 6.2.3.2
Here's Chief Lee's words to the Director in their phone conversation: Yes, Director, it's me.. How's your time tonight?.. I wish you would interview that person I told you about earlier.. Yes, he's exactly the figure we were looking for.
So their looking for additional man power and man power in the restricted area is that is. The evidence of this is in episode 3 when Taehyeon asked the Director for access in the restricted area. Chief Lee tried to stop the Director in granting Taehyeon an access but the Director's answer to Cheif Lee was, "In any case, he knows everything about the 12F, what's the point in delaying? Also, it seems it's too difficult for you to manage it all alone. Wasn't that what your plan was originally?"
Why I don't think other doctors who serves in the 12F get blackmailed? Because they make it so that they don't need to. Few examples to make myself clear:
- In episode 2, Nurse Hwang didn't allow Taehyeon to help her with Yeojin (Taehyeon then was not yet part of the pyramid builders team).
- In episode 2-3, although it was an emergency since Yeojin attempted suicide, Nurse Hwang has no choice but to call Chief Lee instead of calling other available doctors.
- In episode 4, the sexual harassment victim, Chief Lee didn't want any assistance from the Psychiatric Department.
- In episode 6, Taehyeon lied to Chief Shin about the Kim Youngmi.
- In episode 10, Taehyeon lied about the identity of the illegal immigrant mother and named her as Hong Gilsoon.

But about the hospital's secrecy, I can think of some scenes where there can be some minor plot holes. But then again, for me they're too shallow to be concerned about. In any case, here are those scenes and what I think about them. You can be the better judge.
- Gossip on Hospital Director's death in episode 9.. According to Nurse Ahjumma on her conversation with Nurse X-ray that everyone was talking about it. And as per the gossip he died of heart attack. But what the drama showed us was there was someone sneaking in his room, and left us imagining what that guy did to the Director. Whatever he did, how did it lead to a heart attack gossip? Was the thing he did really brought the director to have an heart attack? Or was it didn't but they had someone declare his cause of death as heart attack? -- Whatever it is, it can't be done without bribing/blackmailing a person or two. Yes, the drama could have showed that for better story telling. But I didn't mind that they didn't, because with or without it, I get it. Dojun and the gang had the director killed, and that's what's important.
- Yeojin's medical history shown by Dojun at the end of episode 12.. How did the mental health specialists of Hanshin Hospital came up with the diagnosis that she's suicidal prone? We know that Dojun and the gang are manipulating Yeojin's medical records, as Yeojin herself asked to be re-examined not in Hanshin but at a hospital of her choosing. But how was Yeojin's medical records fabricated? -- Again, the drama didn't showed us and it can't be done without bribing/blackmailing a person or two. Yes, the drama could have showed that for better story telling. But I didn't mind that they didn't, because with or without it, I get it. Dojun had Yeojin's medical records fabricated, and that's what's important.
No matter how many people gossip about those information, there's no need put the staff "under control", since they've taken care of it by providing "facts" in the form of fabricated medical records.
Same thing they did with the sexual harassment case, even though the staff may gossip about the victim and the halyu star, they already manipulated facts in order to dispute any gossip and not prevent any need to put the staff "under control" (the whole South Korea even). And as I stated in my comment in 6.2.3.2.2, they avoided unnecessary contacts as well (Chief Lee didn’t want any assistance from the Psychiatric Department).
Another is the gossip about Yeojin's fake death, in the press conference hosted by President Go, a reporter asked if the gossip is true that the real cause of death was suicide. They didn't mind the gossips about it, no putting of the staff "under control" was done, they even allowed it to reach the press. Because they have the "facts" on...

Can I, as a blanket response, just say "no"?
Occam's Razor: "Pluralitas non est ponenda sine neccesitate" or "Entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily."
Basically, it means that all things being equal, the simplest explanation tends to be true. It's used in science all them time.
Either they 'hire' TY and bribe/blackmail him and do the same to all of the other permanent staff, OR, they 'hire' TY and bribe/blackmail him and manage the secrecy of the rest of the staff through a multiplicity of other mechanisms and methods. The first is simplest. So, plot hole.

@Susan ??? 6.2.3.2.6
I beg to disagree, though it may not be as simple as the first, the drama shows that it's doing the second "they 'hire' TY and bribe/blackmail him and manage the secrecy of the rest of the staff through a multiplicity of other mechanisms and methods". So it's not a plot hole. It is a plot hole if the drama is not showing anything, but it does show something. And for reference I believe that you've already read all the scenes that I listed in my previous comments where they did "manage the secrecy of the rest of the staff through a multiplicity of other mechanisms and methods". You should even give the drama a credit since it's doing the more difficult route, why insists for the drama to do the easy way?
Also Taehyeon is different from the other permanent staff since Taehyeon has access to the restricted area (crime scene as described by Taehyeon himself), and the other staff does not. That's why they deal with Taehyeon differently (i.e. bribe/blackmail).

Nooooo! :-)
Seriously you've made a big effort to explain away a HUGE plot hole. But it's there. It didn't disappear.
My point is that people don't act like that in real life. Do you go to your job / study in school and do it differently every single time? No, you develop a system that works for you and apply it over and over again. That's how humans work. That's why the simplicity principle applies extremely well here.
And, "You should even give the drama a credit since it’s doing the more difficult route, why insists for the drama to do the easy way?" I'm going to accept your logic fully - that when the a drama goes a more difficult route that it should lauded and equally, when a drama is lazy and does something easy, it should be condemned.
So - huge condemnation for YP for taking the lazy easy route!! :-)
It's much easier to not bother to make a drama with consistency of character and plot and make the audience fill in the plot holes. By being lazy about not addressing secrecy in a manner that is consistent with human nature and not providing an explanation, YP has taken the easy way out. What a shame! It would have been nice if they addressed these plot holes.

Really? Not all people have money. In order to protect themselves they lie. They manipulate. To dismiss gossips. To make people believe their truth. And that's what their doing here. Why would they waste money on bunch of staff that are dispensable (more dispensable than the Director, Chief Lee, Nurse Hwang, and Taehyun)?

And that's what their doing here as well. Why bribe/blackmail? Why would they waste money on bunch of staff that are dispensable (more dispensable than the Director, Chief Lee, Nurse Hwang, and Taehyeon at that)? When they can just lie, manipulate, and fabricate.

The bit that got cut off section (1/1)
Because nurses are the gossip center of a hospital. If you’re going to keep a secret, either you have to keep them in the dark or effectively silence them. If I’m going to believe that blackmail was important to YP (as opposed to just offering him money) then I’m going to have to believe that this tactic is used on all full time staff on the 12th floor.

I did something I should have done much sooner in this conversation - something I definitely would have done as a producer. I went and asked a physician I know about how secrecy is kept in a VIP wing of high end hospitals (because they do exist.)
He said that everyone who works there is very well paid (bribe) and signs a contract that they will not speak of anything that happens on that floor under penalty of imprisonment or death (threat).
So, basically what I was arguing was a plot hole, was indeed a plot hole.

@Susan ?? 6.2.3.4
We'll wouldn't that be a given that they are well paid? And paid better than other floors of course as Taehyeon regards being in the 12F as promotion in his phone conversation with Seohyeon. Or should the drama really need to show each doctors paycheck? Gosh, that's common sense.
And as the drama showed, and argued by Taehyeon, the doctors even get tips from VIP. And by common sense, for some clients those tips are not just tips for their hard work, but also tips for their silence. And not to mention that by law, doctors really have to keep their patients record confidential.
Vgy7*uhb
September 14, 2015 at 7:23 AM
@Susan ?? 6.2.3.4
Btw, I don't consider being paid well as bribe, because as specialist a hospital really need to pay them extra. Why would you pay manager with an executive rate? What I consider a bribe is something like Dojun offering Teahyeon to pay for his sister's treatment. That's a bribe.

And about the death threat. Losing one's job and all those 12F perks (higher pay and VIP tips) is already a death threat in itself. Why would they dare speak against their bosses and bosses will (contract)?
And oh, I'm afraid for that physician now. Shouldn't he/she not speak of anything that happens on that floor?
Vgy7*uhb
September 14, 2015 at 8:28 AM
Also, I work for a software company and part of my employment contract is a non-disclosure and conflict of interest clauses, and if I ever resign I would need to sign a termination of contract which again has a non-disclosure clause with a non-competition clause. And going against the bosses will (office policies and my contract) would mean penalties, whatever lawful consequences there is, and worse termination of contract. And I think same thing is true for any employee of a multinational company. Or maybe even a small private sector, but I'm not sure.
So should the drama really need to show us each of the doctors' contract signing and the content of their contracts? When it's a known fact that each an every employed person has to sign an employment contract before getting employed?

"I’m mostly curious to know exactly how she thinks a marriage with Tae-hyun will protect her against her brother"
Didn't Yeo Jin say she proposed marriage because she wanted Tae Hyun to be the heir(to her assets in case she passes on) and to be her legal guardian?
As of now, Yeo Jin's legal guardian is Do Joon. I supposed if he can prove that she is mentally incapacitated, unable to make decisions that will be for her own good, he as her legal guardian has every say over her affairs. In other words, he can do whatever he wants with her. If Tae Hyun becomes her husband, then he has legal guardianship over her and DJ loses that power. I am not sure how the law works in Korea and whether it can be contested that YJ is capable of entering a marriage contract. At best, it works just as she plans. At worst, it might involve some legal tussle but at least DJ does not automatically have a hold over her.

First thing, I love this eps! Yong-Pal we used to know from eps 1-6 is back!
I'll pour lots positive comments^^:
I love they point out very clear how 'independent' Yeo-Jin is.
She is the heiress of enormous conglomerate kingdom, and the show puts most important point, that she 'does' deserve and has the blood running to be born naturally as leader/lady boss after all. Not just a privilege she will get as her identity as her Dad's daughter (Not like Do Joon can runs the company either tho ).
She is brave to embrace her own destiny and enemy eventhru she is scared to death as well (that's one of kind bravery, like PYM in Healer). She's sassy and cut it down to your throat (like MCW heiress in Nice Guy), but she's romantic and soft with her lover (shows that she's coming from loving warm family that know how to show & shower their love to loved ones).
All along, I think Yeo-Jin is one of heroine in rare case that's well written, balance & not sexist (not dominant with hero's acts only), very details and specific, fit in the purpose and story arch, and a consistent built that based from very solid ground/past.
A lot of good drama, they underused and undeveloped their heroine's character especially if the drama is hero-oriented, ex : Gaksital (half JSY's fault), Two weeks, The Moon embraces the sun, Rooftop Prince, etc. They stuck in candy girl room and same person from day 1 we saw them until end of eps.
When I first checked Yong Pal, I really thought is just going to be hero-centered and Kim Tae Hee will just come as pretty icing thats evolve her world around Joo Won. But it turns out they both their own hero in their OWN DAMN LIFE ! I love love that.
I can ignore all plot holes that I all agree in upper comments, just for the sake of this new breath of woman take charges of their own life and faces them alone. I can feel the solitude in Yeo Jin even she has Yong Pal as her bf. She doesn't loose herself as whole person 'just' bcs she is someone's girlfriend.
Oh, and where in dreamland you can see a world class heroine propose the hero??? Where?
Okay don't count Cheong Song Yi since nobody can say sowlyyy....

yeah, as I was watching these latest episodes (and at least so far), I really got the impression this drama is following an inverse trajectory to most dramas where, usually, if the heroine begins spunky and resolved, she starts losing steam down the line and becomes increasingly useless on her own, having to tag along with the hero, whereas heroes in dramas start misguided at worst and become increasingly heroic as the story progresses.
In this drama, Yeo Jin started at a really low point (laying in a coma and all), but starts gaining agency and even starts executing plans (yay!), whereas Tae Hyun was pretty heroic since early on (even if he'd never admit to it), but as the drama progresses and he becomes more tangled in this weird 12th floor world and its machinations, he starts becoming more and more powerless and his range of action is reduced, so he needs to start relying more and more on others to get through and he's the one to jump into whatever Yeo Jin's planning.

It's a good point that the writer is not gender bias.
1) Participation
Everyone has a chance to be a hero. One of it is making YJ more proactive in strategizing and saving. That even as females they can do something to save their loved ones. He also puts in a bunch of gals - nurses who can make a difference by making the right moves smartly.
2) Pride
Putting YongPal in the backseat for a while is refreshing. This portrays YP as a sensible and humble guy who has no hidden pride. He knows and trusts YJ as an equal and not as an inferior gender.
3) Power
In the funeral setting, he puts in a bunch of men - an all-boys gathering. And then he proceeded to make YJ all womanly walking up to the stage. Power resides in the mind and not in gender monopoly.

Secondly, do Kdramas ever try to get business stuff right? Why would she need the USB if her dad had already made her the dominant shareholder in his will? When you are the dominant shareholder, you control the damn company. You can do whatever you want.

On the 2nd point, Yeo Jin is the majority shareholder but if Do Joon proves her to be mentally incapable, he as her guardian will assume the decision making powers. I am not sure how the law works in Korea but it's almost like he is given the power of attorney.
Since the USB contains information of how Hanshin slush funds were used for political purposes and the officers who received them, whoever holds it yields another type of power. It will ensure that everyone involved will only obey and listen to the Yeo Jin.

She is the dominant one (not the majority one), but still only owns I believe 32% of the stock - which is not always enough for control - you need 50%+ to guarantee that.
As for the USB.. even after ep12 I am still confused about that. Did he get the real one? Is that the only copy? Did she know that he would betray her, and that is part of her plan? Or did he even really betray her?

yeah, this is something I didn't quite get either.
As speculation goes, since her dad loved her, it's possible he wanted to save Yeo Jin some heart ache by not telling her of Sung Joon's betrayal. Yeo Jin wasn't exactly emotionally balanced after the accident. If her dad had tried and told her about Sung Joon, she'd probably wouldn't have taken it well, especially since Yeo Jin was blaming her dad already. Plus, revealing the truth to Yeo Jin would have also implied telling her about Do Joon trying to kill her. Which, okay, would have been the responsible thing to do? But maybe her dad was trying to save her that heart ache as well (Yeo Jin got along fine with her brother until the accident and before he kept her in an induced coma for years, which kind of soured the relationship for her). And also, Do Joon was his son as well. The father was maybe trying to find a way were he could 'save' both his kids, in his own misguided, convoluted way.
I wanna think Yeo Jin's dad may have tried to implement some plan (mostly because everyone in this drama has a plan) to deal with Do Joon so as not to leave Yeo Jin at the mercy of her brother or to mend his own son in some way. Maybe this is why the dad made it possible for Do Joon to marry Chae Young? Maybe he thought getting his son the girl he seemingly love would put him on the right path and make him forget his feud with his sister? Or maybe, by having Chae Young enter the family, the dad was also giving Yeo Jin an extra relative to keep an eye on Do Joon (and inadvertedly ruining Chae Young's life, but that wasn't his problem)? Maybe by the point the father realized the true measure of Do Joon's crazy, his health had deteriorated too much to do something more about it, idk.
Mostly, I want to think the dad only left the video and USB drive as a failsafe for the eventuality that Do Joon was really as crazy he proved to be afterwards. If Do Joon had been a saner fellow, repented and let his sister wake up after dad passed away, Yeo Jin may have never learnt of the video, nor about her fiance's double facessness or of her brother's murderous ways. She'd just have gone on blaming her father and then moved on with her life. I think this was her dad's intent.
As for the reason dad didn't just go the simple route of turning Do Joon in to the police for the murder, aside that he may have wanted to protect his son, it may have to do with the fact that Sung Joon was son of a rival company and, overall, having Do Joon be a murder would just be bad for bussiness. A bussiness that dad was trying to protect for Yeo Jin. So, if he had gone to the police there would have been no Do Joon but, also, no company left for Yeo Jin. And also, no reason to keep Yeo Jin in a coma after he died.
I'm thinking dad tried his best, but overall, not a great dad.

Brilliant analysis. *double thumbs up*. Agree with all the points.
Yes, the rather couldn't afford a murder scandal within the family otherwise their stocks will fall and they will compromise all their businesses.
And yes, the dad may have found the accident highly suspicious and ordered intelligence to discover the truth. And how did Chae young the out this info as well. Perhaps her dad was put in charge of the investigation. Anyway your deductions explained why the patriarch set up the marriage - both to please his son and hopefully to rein in his greed...sadly sometimes the best intentions spawn harmful consequences.
Ultimately, the USB will allow YJ to use the contacts to "fight" DJ and retain the company under her control. The only sticky problem is that DJ remains the "guardian". So this is something YJ has to thank God for sending YongPal otherwise she has to marry the secretary???!!! Haha just kidding.
I also think that chief nurse could have told YJ about the "legacy" while she was recuperating in the hospital but perhaps she thought it's best the couple leave everything behind and start a new life. It's only when she eavesdropped YP's conversation with the priest then she realized that YJ and the info could save YP. Love the chief nurse.
I think the video may have a few more messages that we don't get to see yet.
Dama, thanks for your insightful comments.

It is possible that dad was still gathering evidence when Yeo Jin had accident (notice the scene where brother call his minion to kill Yeo Jin?), and that video was made when dad had already treated as patient (notice the hospital robe).
After the accident, Yeo Jin is not in good terms with her dad. I suspect she didn't even want to hear an inch of truth about Sung Hoon's real deal when she's finally conscious. She saw her dad as the enemy (who was against her relationship, and finally let Sung Hoon died).
My 2 year old has the same issue. She won't hear what I have say about eating cookie made of playdoh. It's either I let her eat and get intoxicated, or bring her the other room to sleep, until I can come up with real cookie that taste as good as it looks.

Ah, in a manner of speaking, yes, KDNewbie... At the height of YJs devastation at Sung Hoons death, she was completely hurt and couldn't be reasoned with. Not that I condone what her dad did... but in hindsight, it ended up saving her life. Annnd... she met Yong Pal... perfect guy, for the crazy situation... at the right time. Therein lies the Sleeping Beauty-finally-meets-her-true-love fantastical nature of this drama... and its already a drama that has everything else.

I wonder how Tae Hyun can do the marriage registration and become husband and wife with Yeo Jin while he came to the court alone.
You can get a marriage certificate in Korea Just by showing your passport and the passport of someone who is absent?!
That would be very dangerous though.

I think it's been established upthread... that Yeo Jin needs to get married to switch her legal guardianship from Do Joon to Tae Hyun. Its so logical and smart, even without the love aspect to it.
Tae Hyun had to pronounce Yeo Jin dead cos he is the only other doctor on the 12th floor who was involved in Yeo Jin's hospitalisation and coma inducement who is not dead or trying to recover from an injury. I can see Do Joon using that against him but lets not be hasty... I didn't any death certificate being signed so its safe to assume that nothing like that is on the fast track.
Yeo Jins dad is likely to have found out all about DJ's machinations after the fact. By then YJ had already been put under hence he had to do that explanation before his own death. DJ has trusted minions and is impulsive. His dad could have anticipated his actions without believing he would actually go through with them. I for one, still do think he found out about the attempt on Sung Hoon and Yeo Jins lives later.
The USB was too surreptitiously placed to have been found by just anybody. And there was such restricted access... who would just go in there to find it assuming they had an inkling it could be there? I guess it works for me that it would be there. Sometimes you can hide the most precious of things in the most obvious of places and no one would even think to look there.
My fave scene by far in this ep were all Chae Young's scenes! Well hello there Exposition! Now we know why she hates DJ so much and why she has a predilection for Tae Hyun. She just likes good guys! Once again, 'good taste' lol. I love d her badassery in whisking Tae Hyun anyway and the chat hereafter. Steamrolled is right! Tae Hyun couldn't really get a word in and it was hilarious getting how shocked shes gonna be when she finds out he, not only is in a relationship, but got married! Lol.

TH was like trying his hardest to let her know he's not interested but she kept cutting him off. This is not the first time I find that TH is always asking CY the questions or "telling her off" the way we want him to.

SS! Here am I thanking u for showing me how to do the replies. Lol. Thx a lot. Im having so much fun with it, I think I might actually be overdoing it. :)
Im kinda bummed it gonna end at 16 eps.. I was okay with 20 for petes sake. Maybe even 24... hehe. I dont want to quit this awesomeness too soon. Lol. I think im soo taken by this drama because of how much of an intellectuall exercise it is for me to watch.
And its a very neat balance too.. the entertainment swoon-value and figuring stuff out aspect of it... for me at least. I mean, I watch BBC's Sherlock, so I guess u could say I dont like dramas spoonfeeding me... I love to think about them. Why did that person do that? Could that person have wanted that outcome? Did this person think they could do nothing else but that? Etc. When im able to make sense of the actions, we are a go! Its simple really.
I noticed no one said anything about Sung hoon turning out to be a bit greedy and deceitful. I wondered if people didn't appreciate that development. I personally didnt think it was necessary. I mean, a person can move on from a dead person after three years. In my estimation, Sung hoon could have been an all around good person who just happened to be victimised by DJ. And YJ can move on with Yong Pal cos SH is dead and gone. Everyone can get a second chance at love.
Also.. yes. CY was hilarious! YP's rebuffx just roll off her. Did you catch the "what?" After she told him she did a background check on him. Comic gold, lol!

@Affie, thank you for pointing out Sung Hoon going greedy. I had asked about it in last week's comments section. I agree with you that it was completely unnecessary.
To add to your comment, it would have given YJ a level of complexity in falling in love second time around. I got whiplash in episodes 7,8,9 where she went from grieving for her dead ex, to asking TH to wait for her, to falling head over heels in love with him.
I feel most mainstream Kdramas cannot do the first love part well (mainly because they are trying to sell true love, there are no second chances in true love unless you are a cable drama or an ajumma)

I did think about the location of the USB too but after looking at the structure of the Captain's seat and design of the Bridge (c'mon, don't you think it looks like it was Star Trek inspired? They definitely have a teleportation device in that starship-disguised-as-a-hospital. They even have a reactor core [cf. radiation scare episode], but I digress...) the little drawer was locked away, hidden by the arch of the seat that had to be lifted up. That could only be unlocked by YeoJin when she scanned her handprint on the room panel. No one else could've found it. 절대 안돼.

It may appear that I hold the show to be flawless but I never did and I still don't. But I have seen my share of kdramas to know that most comments on plot holes, inconsistencies are unfair.
Recently, I was silently lurking on a thread of drama popular in this blog and that show had quite a number of plot holes, not to mention a few major or super huge ones. Yet, readers were all lauding it to be the most well written and logical drama there is. I didn't mind until I compare this show to that one and realized how different yardsticks are applied to different shows.

This show still doesn't make sense but at least it is not stuck in fairytale land anymore. Also is joo won's oily sticky makeup intentional? He looked so bad! Please let him catch up on some sleep.
The good:
CY and YJ. Go girl power! I love CY. I also love that she is myopic when it comes to TH.
Ajumma nurse. How to kill 2 birds with one stone and look chill about it.
The funeral hall scene in this and next episode. The tone was a lot like Punch which I really loved
The bad:
The bandages: they are hilarious. They are left on or off as the plot requires. Am I to believe she got scans with the bandages? None comes to change her bandage?
The father: while he was building this elaborate room for her to protect her, did he not worry about her legal guardianship going to DJ. An evil brother who had tried to kill her already and would definitely try again. Want it easier to just wake her up and tell her? Maybe restrain her first. All of this would have worked in a sageuk

This is not actually the first time that I've watched such occurrence. In the drama Playful Kiss, the lead guy registered their marriage without the lead girl's knowledge. Well, they had a wedding ceremony before that but he was pretending he didn't want to register their marriage just yet. The lead girl and the lead guy's mom were actually looking for the lead guy's ID card so they can register the marriage, but the lead guy beats them in doing it.

I do really like the females in this.
I don't have much issue with the bandages since most people don't know what the coma patient looked like originally. And most people at the hospital probably don't know what Yeo Jin looks like either, so her masquerade is not that hard. All the goons Do Joon has at his service, they still need to rely on the hospital staff to do the hospital stuff, so between Tae Hyun, Ahjumma Nurse and Rebel Nurse, they probably could take care of the CT's and mix some records so that it looked like she has amnesia or whatever. Maybe they didn't have her redo the studies and just used the ones from the original patient.

Hahahahahahahahahaha!
Wait - first they get an extension to 24 episodes, so the writer wastes 3 of them to make it work - now it's cut down to 16???!!!!!!!!
If the writer isn't p*ss drunk right now, we should all send a gift basket!!!!! I am laughing so hard! This is a writer's NIGHTMARE!
Okay - so 20 episodes of plotting were stretched to 24. Eps 7 - 9 were largely filler. This means that eps 10, 11 and 12 were more equivalent to eps 7,8,9 from the original plotting. Since eps 13 and 14 were shot this week, they may also follow the original plotting and be equivalent to eps 10 and 11. Assuming the writer knows this week that there's a cut to 16 eps, s/he now has to take all of the action for eps 12 - 20 from the original plotting and fit it into 2 final eps!!!!!!!
I couldn't find an article referencing the cut to 16 eps. Hopefully it's not true. Because, if it is, it will be one spectacular train wreck of an ending!

What is being said in that part of the article is.. The station, production company, writer, and management have deliberated and many have disagreed and concluded that the extension is unreasonable to begin with. To force the extension will not be neat, in having 16 episodes they will achieve a successful conclusion.
And it doesn't sound like a production mess.

There's a new press release from SBS. Yong Pal is extended with additional 2 episodes. Two reasons for extension that were:
1. High ratings. (Apparently, SBS wanted to milk on it's cash cow. Oh well.)
2. The writer intended to write 16 episodes but was able to complete his piece with 18 episodes.

Blame it to the one who published it was 20 episodes to begin with it since it never was. I don't know where you get your information, it's a mess.
As per the article below, they said that SBS was considering an extension since The Village was set to start in 5 weeks (during that time Aug 20) but the casting has not yet been finalized for the lead roles. Even though that's the case, extending Yong Pal was difficult since it's already in live broadcast and the actors and staff are already tired. So having extension discussion is difficult.
http://entertain.naver.com/read?oid=241&aid=0002456109&lfrom=twitter
So I believe whether it's stretching or cutting, none of it was done.

Yes, you are absolutely right that some gaps in logic were actually explained in the following episode or two. I have watched dramas where big revelations are only made in the last episode or worse, not made at all.
If anything, this drama is always one step ahead of its viewers. And the best part is the twists and turns all make sense. If it continues in this manner to a strong finish, I would say it's definitely deserving of its ratings. After all, this is not one drama which drew much attention nor counted on the star power of its leads. I think neither KTH or JW have a large fan base of loyal supporters.

Well, there was the whole "he wouldn't have had to die if he had just listened to me" thing from Do Joon about Sung Hoon. We still don't have the whole story, I think. The agreement was a business agreement, but Sung Hoon overstepped his bounds and decided he wanted Yeo Jin for real? That's about what dad said, although without much explanation. So it's possible that Sung Hoon wasn't all bad. That he really did care for her (eventually), and that's why he wasn't willing to give her up at the end.
Or he got selfish, wanted her for something else beyond his and DJ's original plan, still didn't care about her, and was still a horrible person. Either way, Sung Hoon's story may not be all filled in yet. :)

In the first place, I didn't have very good vibes about Soon Hoon - he appeared to be very reckless and so, it wasn't surprising that he turned out a bit shady.
Yes so hoon sought out KTH out of greed or spite (company rivalry) but he ended up liking KTH. Afterall, marrying an heiress is a bonus.
I think the writer brought out so hoon as a culpable character as a lesson that there are wolves donning sheep's clothings. Perhaps it's not necessary but it's also a point of consideration that betrayal can happen from a close circuit, even family members and spouses.
YJ also never said her scars are undying love to so hoon. It was primarily guilt because she thought it was an accident and that he ended up dying for loving her. Now it will close a chapter in her life for shouldering all the guilt in the past three years.
And who was So Hoon? CY described him as tall, handsome and rich. YJ must have loved So Hoon a lot but what was the love built upon? Sweet words, undying promises, similar interests, compatible status, etc....
In contrast, TH has nothing to offer her on all of the above except his true self sacrificing nature and kindness. Perhaps the writer wanted to show that love and marriage is not a frivolous thing and that ending up with the right and good person is more important than who "appeared" first. And also open your eyes big before saying "yes" which she failed to do with So Hoon.
It's also possible that the writer wants to deal with the issue of forgiveness and divine intervention
- YJ will now have to forgive herself and So Hoon
- CY's BF committed suicide but she went on living to protect her father. YJ didn't do that but now in loving memory of her dad she needs to leave the past behind.
- She also needs to see that there is a blessing in disguise for every wrongdoing that occurred in her life.

I only saw KTH's acting once in My Princess and I think she is fine then. In Yong Pal, she gets to explore more, acting alongside such believable actor (Joo Won!), and I think she's doing a good job too. :)
As about the flaws...
I try not to be defensive, but the more I think of it, the more I realize that they dont have to explain everything (flaw, plot holes, technicality etc) on screen. Even with so many flashbacks, the actors are sleep deprived and they look greyish and puffy on screen. Besides, even if they have plot holes and flaws, they are super minor, compared to other dramas.

I'm not really sure about your other valid points, but in regards to #1, even if YeoJin is catholic, she would still have a traditional funeral because most Koreans practice multiple religions simultaneously even if they profess to be Christian since elements of Buddhism, and ancestor worship are actually part of the culture. So as a Catholic, she might celebrate easter and such but that doesn't mean she won't celebrate Chuseok, one of the biggest national holidays because it is a festival in honor of the harvest moon simply because it's important to her as a Korean. Same thing goes for New Year's, which is filled with practices that originate from ancestor worship and it should be in conflict with her beliefs as a Catholic. There are those reasons and also the fact that a traditional Korean funeral would definitely resonate or be more relatable to the audience.

It's always difficult to discuss Yong Pal's first episode of the week when the 2nd has already aired. I always have to remind myself not to spoil by talking about the next episode or adding all those *spoiler* warnings.
I totally agree that this drama has been well developed and logical so far, it just needs to finish well and given the trajectory, I am hopeful.

Actually, I do believe in highly patriarchal Korea where marriage registrations are all about keeping records of family lineages, it's probably very possible that that's all the men have to do. I'm just wondering about the seal though, because while the IDs are necessary, I'm sure some form of seal is needed. Someone on Soompi took a screenshot of the form that TaeHyun filled and it showed his seal but not YeoJin's. I'm just wondering if (1) that was just a shot and they didn't bother to show him stamping it with YeoJin's seal as well since that's just regular Korean cultural logic that it *would* happen anyway, or (2) some were speculating that with the passport you don't need the seal (highly unlikely). I'm going with (1). But that begs the question - where did YeoJin find her seal? In her captain's chair with all the nifty hidden drawers?
Which brings me to this: I should think that something as personal and important an item as a name seal in Korean society would be kept on the person almost at all times, especially if you are someone of YeoJin's position - I do believe many decision papers and business deals would need her seal before it would be considered fully endorsed. If her father instructed her to be in that induced coma all this while, and knew DoJoon not to be a trustworthy son by his own words, then he would have known too that DoJoon would also misuse YeoJin's personal seal, yes? So logically, based on what we think Daddy Dearest would have done given hidden OneUSB and all, he would have hidden her seal with all other important documents accessible by her only. So...
(1) If DoJoon was leading HanShin as YeoJin's proxy all this while, did he have her seal or was he using a fake one?
(2) If seal is needed for the marriage registration and TaeHyun left before YeoJin got to the throne and all its hidden treasures, for sure the seal is not with TaeHyun - how did he register the marriage then?

@mesmerised, this writer has been pretty good with the details so far and I am sure he was just as careful with the marriage registration scene. Let's see if the seal becomes an issue in the coming episodes.
I am not sure if guardianship and proxy are the same. Could it be that DJ as Yeo Jin's guardian does not need a seal?
I think we need someone who knows how these things work in Korea to comment.

I would think that guardianship would be over matters pertaining to herself, e.g. health, education, estate, etc. But as far as the business is concerned, shouldn't he be performing as a proxy? Afterall, it *is* business...

I saw this scene in "Heard it though the grapevine" where the teenage parents-to-be go to register their marriage, with the girl's parents acting as witnesses. All of them were there at the registration office together. It was quite a funny scene as everyone stamped their seals in quick succession while the boy's side was just flabbergasted.
My point is that everyone was present. Now I can stretch my imagination and believe that the cops acted as witnesses. But why? Did TH explain the whole Hanshin mess en route to the office?
I guess its another thing I will let go. Or maybe it will be explained in coming episode.

Does anyone have an idea why Yeo Jin's Dad treated DJ the way he did?
I had thought he was a terrible father in that he was clearly biased against his son. Perhaps his relationship with his ex-wife wasn't good or DJ's mom wasn't a good person but that cannot be an excuse for not loving DJ. However, in reality, scenarios like this do happen. Favoring the child of the woman you love over the other child.
Do Joon said he buried with his own hands, those who abandoned him. He was referring to his birth mother and step-mother. Do you think he meant he had a part in their deaths? Or did he mean that he outlived them? If it's the former, than Do Joon is a lot crazier than I thought. Did Dad know or suspect? Could it explain his behavior towards Do Joon?

@SS
Could be a simple case of simply favouring one child over another. Perhaps YeoJin was always lovable and kindly as a child and simply had her father's favour. Maybe sibling jealousy on DoJoon's part was simply not managed well when he was younger. These are all possibilities. And if you consider that he (Old Chairman Han) loved YeoJin's mother with all his heart, it could well be then that he would love the product of their union even more. Afterall, DoJoon's mother was checked into an alcoholic's rehab facility and could have been the source of much pain and embarrassment for the family. Knowing how much Korean culture values "face" and public presentation, this might have always been a point of much negative feelings and ill will towards DoJoon. Not that these would have excused either Old Chairman Han or DoJoon's behaviours, but well, life happens.

Correct me if Im wrong, but I thought in the Hanshin family, the money came from YJ's mom, hence YJ was the true inheritor. The dad must have thought that DJ should serve YJ, and DJ detested the second class status, thats why he turned evil.

For sure, but I think @SS's question is more of, what would make it such that the animosity is so deeply ingrained. Even if YeoJin is the rightful heir, there's no need for such sibling rivalry.

Greed for money and power corrupts. There are real life incidents where murders have been committed over it. Siblings against siblings, children against parents, parents against children too.
Why wouldn't DJ be angry if not treated on par with his sister? Why should he by default be subservient? Favoritism wreaks havoc with children's psyche. The dad must have thought he was setting ground rules, but children can see though hypocrisy a mile away.

Sometimes when I read these recaps I wonder who the audience is with words like "acquiesce". I guess it helps people build their vocabulary??
