Twenty Again: Episode 6

Aw, I love this episode, which is all sorts of feel-good and satisfying. I love a drama where most of the characters are decent people who come through, and it’s especially satisfying to see that Nora has more people who’ll come through for her than she’d thought. And it’s better still to see that more than saving damsels in distress at key moments, this drama’s really more about giving those damsels the tools to help themselves. Maybe it’s the less dramatic option, but ever so much more useful in the real world.

EPISODE 6 RECAP

Nora sees her husband with his girlfriend at the theater, and is stunned speechless. She watches Woo-chul carrying Yi-jin’s purse and sliding his around her waist, and then Hyun-seok arrives and claps a hand over her eyes.

Not that it helps, because she’s seen enough to realize the truth. She pushes Hyun-seok aside and goes back for a second look, and it’s unmistakable.

Nora hurries out before she’s seen, and Hyun-seok follows her outside. She’s so stunned she barely registers him, making up an excuse about needing to meet Yoon-young.

Nora leaves deep in thought, thinking to the incident in 2011 when Woo-chul had brought up, seemingly out of the blue, how ill-matched they were as a couple. He says she must be tired of trying to match his preferences, and although she replies that it isn’t difficult for her, he asks, “Can’t we split up?” He’s tired of always teaching her everything, and while he credits her for trying hard, he but feels they’re ill-suited.

Then we jump to 2013, after the couple finally decides to divorce upon Min-soo’s university enrollment. Yoon-young speculates that Woo-chul has another woman on the side, but Nora doesn’t think so—he’s never spent a night out, and he’s always answered his office phone at night, even when she called from a pay phone. Nora sighs that he must really just be that tired of living with her ignorance, while Yoon-young exclaims that it’s his fault she never went to college.

As Nora walks home, Hyun-seok follows slowly in his car, watching in concern when she suddenly bursts into laughter. He worries that the shock made her snap.

Yoon-young calls and hears the story, and is appropriately angry on Nora’s behalf. She asks why Nora ran away, though, and Nora confesses that she was afraid of confronting Woo-chul—her husband and son have been her whole world since she was eighteen, and the idea of being all alone terrified her. Nora breaks down in sobs, and Yoon-young is on the verge of tears herself. Behind them at a distance, Hyun-seok watches.

He’s in a stormy mood when he returns to his office. Sang-ye apologizes for stepping in and guesses that Woo-chul is having an affair. Hyun-seok says he’d wanted to let Nora die with her love for her husband intact, upset that he couldn’t make that happen: “How could I make her die the world’s most pitiful woman?”

Sang-ye asks what they can do now, and he replies that he has to help her do everything else on her list.

Woo-chul sits Nora down at home that night for one more attempt to get her to quit school and divorce him. He hands her an envelope of the month’s living expenses, explaining that he will continue to provide for her until June, when their contract stipulates that they divorce. But her tuition—that, he has no intention of paying.

He reminds her that if she breaks the contract, she won’t get the store they own, which they’d agreed to give her in the divorce. On the other hand, if she quits school and fulfills the contract, she’ll get the store and the apartment initially agreed upon. She glares and thinks privately that she knows why he’s doing this, while Woo-chul speaks in an infuriatingly calm, reasonable tone about how Nora should do the practical thing.

As Nora pounds away at a dried fish in the kitchen, Woo-chul starts in again about how this is all for the best and how she shouldn’t cling foolishly to water that’s already been spilled. She asks pointedly if he’s having an affair, which puts him on the defensive. Flustered, he just complains about the fish nobody’s going to eat, and she snaps, “I’m going to eat it!” Furthermore, she says she’ll think over his terms and dismisses him firmly, and her assertiveness isn’t something he’s used to seeing. I love that knowing the truth is making her sassy.

In the morning, Hyun-seok watches Nora arriving at school, with her husband and son each arriving separately. He approaches Woo-chul and asks how he and Nora liked the performance last night, pretending to think they went together. He balls his fist when Woo-chul lies that he gave the tickets away, but sees Nora in the distance and cuts the conversation short.

He finds her at her locker and asks about last night, but she gives a vague answer and excuses herself because she’s on cleaning duty for her dance club. He follows her there (of course he follows her—I mean, he’s adorable, but also totally a stalker now) and assumes she’s taking out her frustrations by working, which makes him worry about her health.

Hyun-seok calls Yi-jin as she’s on her way to school, asking to see her right away and making her wonder at his continued interest all of a sudden. Her father, the important school board director, sees Hyun-seok as potential match material for Yi-jin, whom he’s pressuring to marry, even if Hyun-seok’s family background is a little lacking for his tastes.

When Hyun-seok greets them, director dad asks if he’s still unmarried, and Hyun-seok plays along as though he’d be happy to be set up on a date. Dad asks what his ideal type is, and Hyun-seok looks at Yi-jin for a pointed moment, and then answers that she’s married to Professor Kim Woo-chul. Haha. He says that was in the past and they’re just friends now, sighing that he missed his chance to pursue her in high school.

Min-soo finds a note tucked into his book at the library, which turns out to be Nora’s map of campus that she’d been using to avoid running into both Min-soo and Woo-chul. She tells him she won’t get in his way and tells him not to worry, apologizing again.

In the marriage class, the photos from the homework assignment are shown, and Nora takes particular interest in Hye-mi, now that she knows she’s Min-soo’s girlfriend. She thinks proudly that her son did well on that front, though I’d beg to differ.

Yi-jin explains how in making them simulate couple scenarios, the class encountered issues real couples face, like disagreeing on preferences. She explains that the next partner assignment will focus on the differences between men and women. After class, Min-soo arrives to meet Hye-mi, and casually asks about the older student in the department. Hye-mi just says she’s not very close to her or interested, and Min-soo doesn’t ask further.

Nora finds her new friend Seung-hyun looking up part-time jobs, and is amazed to hear that she works three jobs and is putting herself through college. She asks if there might be any jobs open to people her age.

Hyun-seok calls Yoon-young to ask for her help, and explains how he saw Nora’s notebook and the will she wrote to her son. He wants to help her fulfill the items on her bucket list, and Yoon-young realizes that he must not know that the diagnosis was wrong. And like the awesome best friend she is, she decides, “I’ve got you now.” Muahaha.

Nora arrives on campus wondering why there are so many high school uniforms around, just as she spots Yoon-young waiting for her—dressed in her old high school uniform. She drags Nora off to change too, since April Fool’s at college means the students wear their high school uniforms, and she’s a proper college student too.

Better yet, waiting for them is Hyun-seok in his own uniform, looking uncannily like his teenage self. Oh, this is so great. They are too cute for words.

Yoon-young plays this off like it was her idea, saying she threatened Hyun-seok into participating. Despite her embarrassment, Nora lets her friends lead her away to have fun for the day.

As they head out, Woo-chul drives in and stares at the trio, agog. Hee, I love that Hyun-seok makes eye contact as he purposely slings an arm around each friend, and Woo-chul’s eyes bug out of his head.

Hyun-seok takes them to their old high school, where they’re met by a fourth classmate—Dong-chul, who used to eat off their plates at Grandma’s ddukbokki restaurant (and who, I believe, runs the ddukbokki stand now).

Nora looks nostalgically at her old school, imagining her teenage self here in the hallways. Hyun-seok gets caught in a memory of his teenage self being berated by the teacher for being too unconventional, then pushed around by other students. Adult Hyun-seok follows Teenage Hyun-seok outside to his old resting spot, which is also where the girls had their hair-pulling fight.

Teenage Hyun-seok had been reading here when he’d seen that fight, and had been ready to step in when Nora had stood up for herself just fine. He’d been impressed with her pluck, and had taken to visiting Grandma’s shop regularly.

He’s pulled out of his flashback by Nora, who calls him over to pull childish pranks on him. In a flash, he imagines them as eighteen again, laughing over silly jokes, insisting he was just letting Nora think she tricked him. While Dong-chul fluffs his ego by saying he grew up really impressive, Nora sneaks up behind him to trip him.

They take a series of the most adorable sel-cas ever, and then walk through the neighborhood looking for Nora’s grandma’s old restaurant. There’s been so much change that she’s worried won’t be able to find it. But when she rounds a corner, she sees the old location (albeit transformed into a modern high-rise) and is flooded with memories.

Flashback. Teenage Nora assures Grandma that once she starts school, she’ll bring all her classmates here to eat, but it’s Grandma who tells her to keep their relationship a secret. She’s heard that a lot of Seoul arts school kids are rich brats, and doesn’t want Nora to suffer for being poor. Grandma tells her to pretend she doesn’t know her, to Nora’s horror, and says that the eyes and heart can say what the words can’t.

These thoughts spur tears in Nora now, but Hyun-seok lightens the mood by poking her face and leading the group away for the day’s finale event.

Woo-chul is distracted through his drive with Yi-jin, and his preoccupation has her in a snit. When he suggests driving to a certain location, she asks pointedly, “Why, does your legal owner like it there?” She also asks why he never mentioned that Hyun-seok and Nora were friends.

Woo-chul assures her that he’s never had an interest in his wife’s friends before, and Yi-jin sighs that it feels like their future plans are growing farther away. Woo-chul declares that he’s putting all his focus on the matter… just as his mind drifts to Nora looking chummy with Hyun-seok.

Min-soo accompanies Hye-mi to a club, not knowing that farther back in line, his mother’s waiting to get in as well. Hyun-seok unsuccessfully tries to convince the bouncer that Nora is really a freshman, and even a bribe gets rejected firmly. Nora wonders why Hyun-seok is so insistent on getting in, and Yoon-young replies, “You wanted to go” before covering up for her slip.

Nora suggests they just go somewhere else, but Hyun-seok insists, “No, you have to do the things you want to now, or you might never get to.” She agrees with that, and Dong-chul suggests a different place.

On the dance floor, Hye-mi gets all into the dancing while Min-soo feels uncomfortable and excuses himself to hang out at the bar. That leaves Hye-mi dancing by herself, and when a boy comes up to her, she shoots the boyfriend a huffy glance and continues dancing, to Min-soo’s ire.

Ha, Dong-chul takes them to a much less hip club, but it’s blaring old-school ’90s kpop, and they jump into the dancing. This was totally a better choice anyway, I’m just sayin’.

Back at the trendy club, Min-soo is pretty drunk by the time he decides to get on the dance floor, and when Hye-mi suggests they leave since he clearly doesn’t enjoy dancing, he insists he’s going to dance. He watches dancer boy’s feet closely and mimics the movements, and finds that he can follow along pretty well after all. Hye-mi lights up and joins him in the dance. I still really don’t care about this couple, but better dancing than acting, I say.

Club Old-School ends on a high note too, and the four friends head to the bus stop feeling great. Yoon-young and Dong-chul are insistent on taking the bus home like proper high schoolers despite the embarrassment, and head off together.

Nora and Hyun-seok take the next bus, where their uniforms draw strange looks from the other passengers. Nora shuffles behind Hyun-seok to hide, and when the bus suddenly stops, she grabs him in an inadvertent back-hug to keep from falling. She apologizes and quickly lets go, though he sure doesn’t seem unaffected. Then he watches her reflection in the window, noting how she smiles in contentment.

At home, Woo-chul eyes the clock darkly and wonders why Nora’s so late. He thinks back to seeing the three friends leaving school, and wonders what Hyun-seok’s smirk meant.

As Hyun-seok walks Nora home, she sighs that today being April Fool’s must be why the entire day felt “like a lie.” Not fake, but like something unreal. She wonders wistfully, “Will I have another day like this again?” She tells him that she remembers everything now, and that she must have been suppressing those memories: “It would just make me long for those days again, and go back. All this while, I…”

She finishes the thought in her own head: “Living was so overwhelming, and lonely, and difficult.”

Out loud, she just thanks him for the day. He says gruffly that he didn’t do it for her—he wanted to do it, and she just got roped into it.

Nora adds that of everything, he’s “the most like a lie”—he changed so much. He asks, “I got really cool, didn’t I?” She shakes her head, saying, “No, twenty years ago, when you were directing you were cool.”

He looks at her curiously. Nora says, “Whether you wanted to do it or not, to me, it was an unforgettable gift. So I’ll forgive you for being mean at first.”

She thanks him again for the day and skips inside happily. Watching, Hyun-seok says she ought to have lived like today the whole time.

Nora arrives at the elevator just after Min-soo does, and he gapes at the sight of Mom in her old uniform. He’s nervous enough about himself, since he skipped studying to go play, and together mother and son go tiptoeing inside. They get caught together, heh, and Woo-chul is startled at the sight of them sneaking in together.

Nora explains that it was uniform day, and when Woo-chul asks where she was, she says plainly, “At a club.” Min-soo’s shocked too, and she tells him to try clubbing because it’s really fun. When Dad balks, she replies, “Playing for one day doesn’t ruin the whole year. There’s a time for playing, too.”

Hyun-seok flips through the photos shot today and wonders sadly, “Are you… going to die like this?”

Nora, meanwhile, draws more cartoon additions to her notebook, this time drawing Hyun-seok all cool in his sunglasses and uniform. She flips back to the angry picture where he’s being punched in the face and realizes that she hasn’t asked him yet why he was so mean to her at first. Then she figures that it just matters that they’re friends again.

The next day, Nora gets busy on her job hunt, though she gets turned down when she tells them her age up-front. On the upside, Seung-hyun calls asking if she’s still looking.

Over at Dong-chul’s ddukbokki shop (which bears the same name as Grandma’s shop from back in the day), Hyun-seok chides Dong-chul for being inattentive to the sauce. Which, by the way, was Grandma’s secret sauce, which he credits for getting him out of debt. Dong-chul sighs that he wants to go back to acting though, and Hyun-seok encourages him to pursue what he loves until Dong-chul reminds him that it would mean giving up the shop and never tasting Grandma’s ddukbokki again.

Dong-chul asks why Hyun-seok didn’t tell Nora about the shop or Grandma’s funeral. Hyun-seok just replies that the truth will become known in due time.

Hyun-seok calls Nora to his office for work that evening, and lays out the ddukbokki in preparation. Aw, that’s cute. But when he calls, she’s busy at her new part-time job and forgot about their meeting. He demands to know where it is, and storms into the convenience store where she’s being trained on clerking, grabbing her wrist and pulling her outside.

She’s utterly confused as he faces her with frustration, saying that he really intended to let her go without asking anything. But why is she spending her time working—and why does she have to work in the first place—when she’s short on time already and should be filling it with all the things she wants to do?

She finally gets some idea when he says she only has six months, and that pancreatic cancer is really painful. He admits that he knows, and asks why she’s doing all this.

Nora replies, “I’m not dying!” His eyes widen. “That was a misdiagnosis,” she explains.

His mouth drops open. “You’re not dying? You’re… not dying? You’re not dying?

His eyes get bigger and bigger and he bursts out, “Ha Nora, you awful girl!” He grabs her arms and goes through about a dozen emotions at once, looking upset and tearful and exasperated, while all she can do is say she’s sorry.

But then he breaks into a relieved smile and grabs her in a tight hug.

COMMENTS

All together now: Awwww. I love Hyun-seok so much. So much! At the outset he certainly acted like a jackass, but I have to give him a ton of props for the way he’s handled Nora’s (supposed) terminal illness, and for putting herself first, always. And his reaction to the truth was both hilarious and nicely understated for the lack of drama involved. I cracked up at how many emotional miles he traveled in that last thirty seconds, going through frustration and disbelief and irritation all the way through to relief and gratitude in superspeed, and was gratified that in the end, all of that melted into just plain ol’ happiness. Because at the end of the day, Nora’s not dying, and that’s what matters.

I love that we got the friends together for the trip down memory lane, because it just adds to the reminder that Nora was once a totally different, vibrant person. I like that Hyun-seok draws that person out of the current Nora, but it’s nicer still to see that she still has a gang. It’s not just one person who loves her—she has a whole circle.

Her fear at confronting her husband about his affair rang true, because she’s only been a housewife for twenty years and has very few friends. But she’s building herself a support system, and that, to me, is more valuable and important than if Hyun-seok were to swoop in and solve her problems. It’s the whole teach a man to fish lesson in action, and that’s what makes him such a good friend. I mean, I’m sure I’ll love him as the love interest too (frankly we haven’t seen much of that yet—get on that, Twenty Again!), but this episode was particularly gratifying for the friendship angle, and for the small steps she’s taking to establish independence.

It’s important, too, that Hyun-seok sees Nora for herself, and that doesn’t mean just the person she presents to the world but all the stuff underneath and in between the lines. Not that I think that others are at fault for not seeing what Hyun-seok sees—he has additional information, while people in Nora’s current life don’t. We can take issue with Woo-chul for a lot of things but I don’t blame him for feeling distant and unconnected to Nora all these years, because she hasn’t been showing him her true self—and given that she got pregnant during something of a fling (they weren’t dating, hadn’t known each other for long), I doubt Woo-chul has ever truly known Nora. Nor has he cared to try. It’s no wonder the recent changes are keeping him off-kilter, because as far as he knows, this is all coming out of nowhere.

It’s Hyun-seok who sees the bigger picture, seeing how she’s lived in a state of emotional stasis for twenty years, suppressing everything about herself because she valued her husband and child more. I was almost about to be annoyed that he wrist-grabbed her out of the store at the end (I know Korea still finds wrist-grabbing romantic, but by god, I refuse to give in on that score), but I found his outburst touching because it was, again, motivated by doing the best thing for her. I believe that if it were possible, he’d fulfill all of Nora’s wishes without her ever knowing of his existence, completely out of sight if he could swing it, like the world’s crankiest fairy god-stalker. Well, I suppose he may have to give up the stalking now that he knows the truth. If he doesn’t have to sneak-help her anymore, can they just skip straight to the smoochy bits? They’ve got twenty years of catching up to do! Chop chop.

tvn is on roll this year: Oh My Ghost, now Twenty Again - both are masterpieces to me.

Initially, I didn't think I'd love this drama as much as I do now, like really, this is just so heartfelt, true and warm comedy that it leaves me smiling for hours after every episode.
The lead cast rocks - from Nora, through Hyunsuk, their friends, Sangye, fellow students, even Kim Woochool isn't as nefarious as you'd think (he was so hilarious when he peeked out of a car window, I laughed so much).
Keep it up, writer. Slay me with this drama.

I feel the same way. At first, I was indifferent to this drama partially because 1) I still missed Oh My Ghostess 2) I haven't adjusted to Choi Ji Woo in a rom-com. I've only seen her in serious dramas. (thanks Na PD for revamping her image) 3) The amount of grief No Ra got in the first few episodes were frustrating.

Now that we are at the meat of the rom-com, it is actually pretty funny.

"2) I haven’t adjusted to Choi Ji Woo in a rom-com." - Haha, this is so funny to me because the first thing I ever saw her in was Can't Lose. And when everyone was calling her the queen of melodrama, I never got it until I looked up everything she'd been in. Her and Yoon Sang-hyun were so funny and adorable in that.

I think HS bought NR's grandma's shop. Grandma had no use hanging on to the shop since she moved to Seoul for NR and NR, the silly girl went and got herself pregnant and ran away with some stuffy guy.

Grandma waited but then decided to sell and by that time HS had made enough money to be able to buy a small and old shop. HS is the real current owner. DC had no job and was in debt and couldn't continue his acting training and dreams so he was hanging out in grandma's shop for free food. Somehow learned the secret sauce ingredient because he was always there. HS hired him to cook and run the shop when Grandma became too frail and old to continue.

Maybe HS was the person to send grandma off as the official chief mourner at grandma's funeral. NR didn't know and had thought relatives dealt with grandma's funeral. That's why YY and DC keep referring to HS when they try to talk about grandma's funeral. This means HS did something for grandma's funeral perhaps. Enough for the other two friends to think it was a big deal but HS doesn't want to make a big thing out of it. Maybe he even paid for it. Sending off elders at funerals correctly and respectfully is a big thing in any culture, especially the east, so maybe HS did all that in NR's absence.

That begs the question of how down trodden did NR become to not even go back to Korea for her own grandma's funeral. She obviously still received her belongings since she got the pillow stuffed with money, unless she took it with her when she ran away.

Did anyone have "My sassy girl" flashback in this episode or it is just me. Since the announcing of this drama I decided to watch because I loved and enjoyed the previous works of this writer (The only one i didn't watch was the one with lee bo young as main lead). In each of her drama the main lead go through growth and change , her work are different and she cast lead very well and don't choose them based on popularity.

Bad acting and clumsy characterisation aside, I somehow think HM's character is misunderstood by the audience. MS is constantly in lessons, in the library or in extra curricular lessons. Anyhow, always studying. Even when in the library they can't openly sit together and even lunch has dad there sometimes now, so again they can't have it together since the dating has to remain a secret. Or did before the very open argument.

In fact, HM may be good for MS at some level. She isn't going to turn out like his mother (downtrodden and subservient for twenty years). Why does MS get to do what he needs and wants to do and she doesn't. She's not asking him to skip anything, just make some time to do couple things together (things that MS's parents never got to do as a couple because he came along when NR was very young and dad was too busy studying or working to care. Plus dad didn't have enough consideration to think about the wife and what she may want to do.)

HM is having none of that. It's one thing to be constantly studying but there needs to be time out for doing couple things and building up a relationship, without sneaking around to do it in.

A healthy dose of jealousy won't do MS any harm either. Do we really need another version of his dad? Someone who would expect his girlfriend to hang around and wait for him to finish off whatever he's doing and come running when he's free to give his girlfriend the time of day.

NR has spoilt the two men in her life so much they haven't even noticed the most important woman in their lives are entitled to a life too, together as a family or independently. Hopefully, MS will learn this from HM. He can't expect her to wait in the shadows all the time. Not that I expect her to because she's out to get MS and keep him by the looks of it.

I don't think HM was doing anything wrong by taking those selcas in an open space. Admittedly, she didn't have to lie on the guy's lap but all the students from that class were openly taking similar couple selcas. She could have just been posing the way she would have liked to pose for these selcas if she was with her real boyfriend. In fact, isn't that a part of her character, a bit clingy.

Like I said, a bit of jealousy is doing MS some good. The relationship is now open and he's trying to be less stuffy and doing more couple things. Things he wouldn't get to experience as a youth if his girlfriend let's him get away with keeping the relationship secret or giving her some time when he's not doing studying in class, library and goodness knows where else.

I like SH too, but MS and SH would be a normal relationship but HM will keep MS on his toes, not to mention he can live a little whilst still young! Maybe he can get to live a little together with mom at the same time whilst she's redoing her youth.

HM may have been portrayed better in the hands of an experienced actress but never mind, I'll use my imagination.

You have some valid points about Hye-Mi, she did get Min-soo to relax some. He was too much like his father for his own good. My issues with her come from the methods she used to force the change. Open communication should be the cornerstone of any healthy relationship. Her method was way to calculating and manipulative for my liking. Based on her behavior thus far, I also believe she will become more controlling as time progresses. In addition, I was very annoyed when she failed to mentions Nora's help with the pervert professor. She need not discuss the details, but she should have at least had a favorable comment. There is something off about her character.

In all fairness, I may have a personal bias. The actress playing her does not seem to have the same skill set as the other members of the cast. Sometimes it is hard to seperate the character from the actor/actress.

I found it so interesting when Mom and son got caught sneaking in and Mom said "one night of play won't undo the hard work of a year". I took Dad's look of utter shock to mean YES IT CAN look what one night of play did to me! Dad has been raising Min Soo to repeat all of his own academic accomplishments AND keep from making the same mistake of getting mixed up with a girl too early. Often parents attempt to correct what they think what went wrong with their lives through a child. So, Min Soo is on an even tighter leash than most kids.

AWWWWWW. This show. <3 I just want to give a hug to Mr. Grumpypants Fairy God-stalker and Nora and Dongchul and Yoonyoung.

Maybe Nora and Minsoo will bond over things, after being caught clubbing? Lol. I still don't like him, but I have to admit that that scene wherein they snuck in together was so cute.

Does this mean the romance will properly kick in now that the misunderstandings are gone?! WOOOOOOOOT. I am so ready for some grumpypants lovin'.

My hope is that this drama doesn't go the usual route with the married couple reuniting, because our second lead Prof Cha is too adorable for words. I really hope that Nora stays with the better man, but most of all that she continues to shut Woo Chul's trap! Lol
I'm enjoying seeing how much she is growing, how she is beginning to find her voice again and becoming the person she once was...I love that this show is showing us how strong a woman can be.

Isn't it sad that on the one hand Nora was totally devastated when Halmoni told her not to acknowledge her as it would be embarrassing whereas WC n Minsoo took it for granted that Nora should not acknowledge them in school. There's no 'heart' in these 2 I tell you.

I know he's annoying but I would like to see more scenes of Nora with her son. Hear me out! How can we expect there to be any character development if he's hardly around her to see her changing? Personally I would also like him to find out about his fathers affair. Because if they go the realistic route, Minsoo will be properly indignant at that and will be there for his mother. I don't care how spoiled he is. A mother is a mother and all children have that special place in their hearts for their moms.

Cried almost throughout this episode and couldn't wait for the recap to voice my thoughts... Especially was affected by those HS flashbacks... I hope when I reach my 30s i won't look back at my HS days as the best part of my life or the worst. I hope that I always find the best in the present and learn to let go of the past (whether it was good or bad).

The speech at the beginning from Woochul must have sounded just like the speech my dad gave to my mom, except my dad didn't even last 10 years before saying it and they did not get a divorce since it isn't possible in my country. They were in the same situation, forced to get married due to an early pregnancy. My mom was also the artsy type, while my dad was the dominating intellectual type. They weren't really a good match from the start... You know, the kind of relationship that's fun at the start due to the novelty but is not supposed to be permanent. My mom also went to college after that speech was given to her, she thought my dad would see her in a new light. She even became a college professor. Unfortunately, it did not change anything in their relationship but it did give my mom something else to love. Another difference is my dad didn't fall for someone else although he confesses to trying out flings when he travels. My mom was the one who had an affair and fell for someone else. If those instances don't show a total lack of respect towards each other and towards marriage, i don't know what does. Their relationship is the main reason why i'm super scared of marriage, and also would never ever bring a child into this world without being sure that my marriage is based on love, shared values and respect. Oh another big difference, minsoo was sheltered from all these, while we pretty much knew the score as we grew up.

Thank you for your sharing @Bea.

You are right to have taken home the point ... "I hope that I always find the best in the present and learn to let go of the past (whether it was good or bad)."

Yes, we have our now to make the best use of what we can. It doesn't matter what mistakes our parents made except that we have the value of hindsight and of suffering which engenders wisdom and a greater respect for persons. :)

Bea, I wish you wisdom in finding the right life partner, and courage to love, when you do find one.

On a different note, I wonder if Min Soo is totally in the dark about his parents' marriage discord. Children are much more observant than we think they are.

OK, I'm glad because the crappy treatment she's getting on campus and at home coupled with the ridiculous pervy professor drama is making me feel anger that is overshadowing everything else about the drama.

Also don't see what people see in Nam Soo (I'm not familiar with the actor at all so maybe that's it?). He's a little a-hole, don't think he's funny at all and I don't ship him with Nora in any way, shape or form. He's not worthy of her friendship but they are obviously setting them up to be BFF's in the future.

I've actually liked Noh Young-hak ever since I saw him in child roles (lol, he actually played the younger version of Lee Sang-yoon in Goddess of Fire) so I was really glad to see him moving on to adult roles. I think there's a way he played Soon-nam in the early eps that made me like him anyway, but trust me, he gets way better. There's just some really awesome developments in these past few episodes.

Javabeans, gotta disagree with you about the dad. I do get your pt about him never doing the real No Ra but.. there’s a way to treat people, particularly your spouse and the mother of your child. And a controlling cheater? Pffffttttttt! Only my love for Choi Won-Young’s portrayal of him keeps me from throwing things at the screen whenever he appears.

As far as the kids - early on, I thought the girlfriend was going a little Fatal Attraction but now.. I wonder if they’re trying to mirror what the first stages of No Ra and Wo Chul’s relationship might have been. However, I agree that Id far rather see the development of No Ra’s campus relationships! (and while Im happy Hyun Suk is being friendly, I might miss all that high school pettiness)

This is the first time I get to post in a timely fashion! Usually I wait till all the eps are available but this show is so freaking engaging!

I do not find Min-Soo and Hye-Mi's characters and actors to be as objectionable as the concensus seems to indicate. Min-Soo is his parents' child.....like his Dad, Min-Soo is arrogant, unsympathetic and rigid; like his Mom, he is dull and is obedient to his father. However, as No Ra re-emerges and recaptures her spirited self via her friends and the college experience, so will Min-Soo be infused by his willingness to chill out and feed off of his cool mama.
Javabeans.....hats off to you! As much as I savored this episode and the deliciousness of the script and characters, I equally delighted in your critique. You surfaced thoughts and insights which made me appreciate the writer(s?) so much more and allowed me to grasp on a grander scale the significance of each character and what each one brings to No Ra's life.

I'm still not sure what the secrecy surrounding grandmas shop is all about but my theory is that at some point in the drama Nora's husband really is going to take the shop from her. He's been holding that over her head every time they disagree and I don't think this is an empty threat. I believe this is when Hyun Seok will save the day somehow with whatever secret he's been keeping about the grandma especially since it has been hinted at that he developed some sort of close relationship with her while Nora was away.

As for Hye Mi's character, I think my issue is that I can't tell whether or not her character is sincere towards Minsoo. I'm not sure if this was intentional or just because the bad acting but something about her just gives me the feeling I can't trust her. Part of me thinks their immature relationship is being portrayed exactly how it's meant too, just a shallow first relationship with the sole purpose allowing the son to loosen up and connect with his mother as she does the same. Maybe we're not supposed to love hyemi because by the end, he won't be in love with her either. I mean they are both young and freshmen in college so they don't have to be soul mates. I actually think it would be quite refreshing if the drama used this scenario and had them break up in the end and realize that even though they didn't work together, they still learned from each other and grew up a little in the process. It's also possible that he'll prove his character growth in the end by choosing his mom over his girlfriend in some situation.

The only watchable show out there at this point. Now. About Min Soo. From Nora's (mother's) perspective. The character is OK, typical spoiled only son. The idol like wooden actor does get on my nerves, but that's not the point. You can't send this guy abroad to study (like someone on this thread suggested) because he is Nora's sunshine and her pride. Yep. He is her son. Her life did and still revolves around him. I can relate to her sneaking loving glances at her son's college activities, first dates, learning about the way he carries himself with friends. We (moms) don't get to onserve our kids at school much. Well. I did for a year while counseling at my sons' (I have two) school district. And I WAS sneaking around and watching them secretly. It's like watching unfamiliar adult person, not your little baby any longer. :( So you will have to put up with Nora's "son", ladies. He is the most important person for her wellbeing now. Husband, not so much.

Anyone else think it would be cool if Nora became an illustrator or something? I love all the doodles in her notebook, lol. I was just thinking that, since it's too hard to pursue dancing professionally, it might be nice to see her discover a new passion. Obviously, dancing in the club will be one of the best parts of her college life and she can probably continue to have fun doing it for the rest of it too. But it would be awesome to see her try finding a new dream profession. I think illustrating would really suit her!

I just had to re-watch this delightful episode.

The time when she caught her husband in the theatre, she was so stunned she really did not notice that Hyun Suk had covered her eyes or that when she turned to go, she had banged into him.

My favorite scenes must be the 4 old high-schoolers taking selcas and dancing. Still can't get over grinning at the memory of them hard at it.

What struck me this round is that in spite of her granny telling her to hide the fact that they were related, everyone knew that the dukbboki lady was her granny. Which means, she never hid it. When she left the shop, she also did so from the front door. So she kept her word. She said she would call her, "Grandma" and we know that Yoon Young knew and that Hyun Suk did too. How sad that she was prepared to let her family pretend not to know her.

And I've rewatched and rewatched Lee Sang Yoon's face and all the expressions chasing across it at the end, as he repeated, "You're not going to die!" 5 times! Phenomenal! :D

For me I would like WC to realize that he got the most beautiful and special girl and he sucked out the best of her. That he was at fault and still at fault why his marriage life is falling apart.

Even though I don't like WC I would like them to still end up together.

HS to let go of his first love but as a friend he will be the part to bring them together again WC and Nora. I would like him to find him, his own love that grew up just like him.

But just a comment I want a new series where Sang Yon and Choi Ji woo to be together. They are so cute and lovable! I am currently watching past movies and series of CJW and she looks almost the same except for some wringkles - she still simple yet elegant. A real A lister.

I beg to differ on your opinion for WC and HNR to end up together.

Yes, I would want WC to realize his mistakes, but I definitely don't want him and NoRa to end up together.

I doubt Nora and WC were really in love before, because for me their relationship was just like more on taking responsibility. The feeling of attraction when they first met in my opinion cant be concluded as love. Moreover, i dont think they have many sweet moments to be remembered. i can only wish WC and HaNoRa to be friend, since they are still parents for their son.

It is unfair if after years, WC only now realized the actual character of HaNoRa and out of sudden want to terminate their agreement to divorce. Because he should know one of the reasons why HNR became like that because of him. As one of the intellectual person, and has good background, he shouldnt just let her stay at home and take care their family matters. And interesting fact, he is Psychology Prof but he failed to understand her wife's loneliness and how her wife felt during past years.

I have a little feeling that this drama gonna be open ending, but I still want ChaHyunSuk and HaNoRa end up together. I will be more than happy to choose CHS, if i were in HNR's shoes. It is actually more, not because i Favor CHS, but i think the best choice for HNR is to choose a new life and partner. It is not solely because HNR just fell in love with CHS, but more importantly is that HNR should find someone who can accept her in every ways.

I love this drama so so much!! And Cha Hyun Seok! As usual, I always fall in love in the Prince in a white horse character and here I am again! Lee Sang Yoon doesn't disappoint! I always love it when he plays this kind of characters (helpful, playful, prince charming-ish; see: My daughter seoyoung, angel eyes). And I'm very glad that I'm not the only who wants the romance between Nora and Hyun Seok to come immediately!! yaaay for smooches!!

Oh well, regarding Hye Mi and Minsoo storyline, I kind of see that well, during the club scene, he tried new things, and those skills were genetically (umm...dancing by just looking?) from Nora. But aside from that, Naeun's acting just doesn't work. It feels so detached. The son's acting is ok, I can accept it but the girl...ummm...feels like a miscast.

IMO Hyun-seok can more accurately be described as a Princely Ninja Seonsaeng driving a white car (Peugeot). His character is much more than just a mere Prince. Let me explain. His actions are certainly those of a traditional Prince. However, his method much more resembles a Ninja. He works totally behind the scenes, undetected by anyone other than his secret colleagues. He wants no credit or attention for his good deeds. Nora’s joy is his only reward. I chose Seonsaeng, which I hope means “teacher” in Korean, because his ultimate goal is to put himself out of a job. This probably sounds funny, but a teachers goal is to give the student the knowledge or better yet the ability to gather knowledge to successfully perform in their field of study. A Seonsaeng wants his student to grow. A Prince would not teach you how to wield a sword, but Hyun-seok did. He put a USB in Nora’s hand. In this case that USB was a modern day sword used to vanquish the pervert professor. He helped her become stronger by giving her the tools to fight her own battle. He also allowed her to decide if fighting the battle was worth the risk of losing. He then went to extra step and secretly made sure that Nora won the battle. A good Seonsaeng protects their students until they are ready to face the world on their own, graduate. As for the car I just happen to recognize the Peugeot insignia. I wonder if they chose white on purpose?

Ok, I have always wondered about this aspect in the K-dramas, and it is nice to have it finally explained. Not knowing the meaning behind it, I always thought it was rather rough treatment, or being disrespectful. Another cultural things that sometimes needs to be explained.

That being said, this was an excellent episode. It would be ever so nice to see the husband's 'dreams' of a new and improved live go up in smoke. He finally sees what he killed in the marriage and wants it back, or his new squeeze literally does that to him, and turns into the dragon I think she is hiding? Nora and Hyun-seok are just the greatest together, and how could you not want to see them succeed?

I hope Hyun Seok loves Nora for who she is now, not the idea of her that he had when they were in high school. It's wonderful snd so sweet that he's reminding her about her youthful spirit and drawing it out to help her cope with her life. But i hope he isn't trying to change her to become this goddess he had put on a pedestal in high school. She has changed and she can't be the exact same person she was in high school. But, she is the person she is now.. just with her high school spirit to help deal with life's challenges. I can't wait to see how our OTP get together!

In the comments for episode 6, gogummaa had referred to Hyun-seok as a "Prince in a white horse ". I then replied with the following:

However, after viewing episode 7, I would like to amend my description to Immature Princely Ninja Seonsaeng. I believe no explanation for the change is needed.
