Twenty Again: Episode 4

Ah, hello hilarious misunderstandings, I’ve been waiting for you. I figured the emotions of the opening week would soon give way to the lighter (but still heartfelt) comedic moments, and now we’re there in full swing. It’s a good place to be, with characters behaving in cute, hilarious, and frequently childish ways. But the poignancy is still there, and while it hurts to watch every time life kicks Nora down, we’re starting to see that she’s not entirely alone.

EPISODE 4 RECAP

Reading Nora’s letter to her son, Hyun-seok realizes that she (thinks she) is dying. It makes Hyun-seok recall every terrible mocking thing he’s said to her, and at least he has the grace to feel terrible about it. Muahaha, you deserve some misery, meanypants. I mean, I’m sure I’ll love you soon enough but right now you should really suffer.

He can’t believe she’s really dying, while across town, Nora gets the misunderstanding cleared up with the doctor, who says she’s healthy enough to live till a hundred. She leaves in the best spirits and tells her friend Yoon-young the good news, and they do a happy dance right there in the street.

Yoon-young can’t believe the hospital put her through that emotional turmoil, but Nora takes the cheery view, saying it gave her a chance to re-examine her life. She uses Hyun-seok’s term “well-dying,” a take on “well-being” that means accepting that death is inevitable and living all the better for it.

Hyun-seok’s teaching assistant Sang-ye arrives at his office loft, only to be told to cancel his evening appointment and go away. She’s surprised, since he’s never one to cancel something, and guesses something’s wrong.

Nora calls to ask about her lost notebook, and Hyun-seok gruffly lies that he doesn’t have it. Why did you lie, Hyun-seok? I love that she often prompts him to do irrational things he can’t quite understand.

Nora complains to Yoon-young about how mean Hyun-seok is to her, and wonders where she lost her notebook. She says she needs it now more than ever, because although she’s not terminal, she’s been inspired to live fully. She even credits Hyun-seok for the lesson, reciting his words on how overplanning for the future isn’t always good, and that it’s important to live in today, before it turns to yesterday.

Yoon-young is impressed at Nora’s upbeat turn, which reminds her of Nora’s teenage self. Nora explains that initially she thought she of going to school because there was nothing left for her to do at home, with husband and son always out. But when she started writing down her life story, she realized she had nothing to do because she’d never lived for herself. When she started writing down her bucket list, she found there were so many things she wants to do.

Hyun-seok flips through Nora’s notebook, reading through all her plans and thoughts, including the illustration of himself where he’s being punched in the face (and labeled “bad jerk”). He notes how mundane her bucket list is, with wishes like sleeping over at a friend’s house, going to an MT, and traveling alone. He can’t find any mention of the husband and wonders if he’s in the dark about her illness.

That night, Nora gets home just as Min-soo’s arriving, and greets him enthusiastically by slinging an arm around his shoulder. Woo-chul sees from the parking lot, and father and son are left wondering at the change in her behavior. It’s interesting to think they may never have known her being spunky or alive.

At school the next day, Hyun-seok finds himself watching Nora closely, and sees her running into her department sunbaes, who are still ticked off about standing up to Pervy Professor. She recalls Hyun-seok’s words about how she’ll never understand the pressures the students are under, and apologizes for putting them in a tough spot, but stands firm about not owing Perv an apology.

Fuming, the eldest sunbae orders that a separate chat group be created just to exclude Nora, which gets overheard by both Hyun-seok and Nora’s classmate Seung-hyun, who looks conflicted. The other freshman girls are also conflicted when they get the text notification, though not for too long: Despite being grateful to Nora for speaking up, they shun her when she walks by.

Assistant Sang-ye chats with a colleague about Hyun-seok’s sudden canceled plans, which is so unlike him that the colleague speculates that he’s dating. Sang-ye denies that (and seems to have a crush on him herself), just as she sees Hyun-seok through the window… stalking an oblivious Nora across campus. HA. He just looks so obvious.

Nora arrives at dance club Bounce to track down her marriage class partner Soon-nam. She asks to do part of their couple assignment now, and when he turns her down, she offers to meet very early or very late so that nobody sees them together. Soon-nam’s annoyed as usual to see her, though he’s heard of the new chat room and seems to feel twinges of worry, with a side dose of curiosity upon hearing about her dancing past.

Hyun-seok follows Nora from the Bounce room to the convenience store where she buys lunch, with her notebook still in hand—he totally means to return it, but just can’t figure out how. I’m presuming the direct approach is out of the question for some really good reason. He gets the bright idea to leave it near the secluded bench he saw her at before, and goes through a whole rigmarole to make it look like it was dropped there accidentally.

He sees her approaching, then spies Woo-chul heading right for her from the opposite direction. Recalling that she didn’t want him knowing of her attendance, Hyun-seok yanks Nora aside, pulling up his trench coat to cover her head. She’s totally confused, but when he whispers that her husband’s approaching, she ducks closer into his chest. As he passes them, Woo-chul tsk-tsks at the (seeming) public display of affection.

But that attracts attention from passing students, who whip out their phones to take pictures. Hyun-seok directs her to run on the count of three, grabbing her hand as he runs toward that secluded bench. He asks if it’s okay for her to be running (you know, given her condition), then smiles adorkably when Nora finds her notebook dropped nearby. He’s so proud of himself.

Hyun-seok advises her to take off her jacket (so people don’t recognize her in the photos), then leads her to an unassigned locker where she can stow her books instead of lugging them around. He also contemplates calling Woo-chul to share what he knows, but decides against it.

Assistant Sang-ye witnesses the exchange at the locker and asks if Nora is the reason he rejected school sponsorship. She points out that he’s worked ten years on this project and can’t lose it so easily. Plus, it’s unlike him to let personal feelings interfere with work.

He tells her that Nora’s husband is Professor Kim Woo-chul, then posits a what-if scenario where he’s dying in six months—how would Sang-ye feel if he kept that truth from her? She agrees that it would be a disservice to the loved one to keep that kind of information secret, and wonders who he’s referring to.

Woo-chul is dismayed to hear that Hyun-seok rejected funding just to keep him out of his theater project. His professor girlfriend Yi-jin had wanted to persuade Hyun-seok and present it to Woo-chul as a surprise gift, trying to help him establish a strong reputation at Woocheon University. She apologizes for stepping in, but as luck would have it, Hyun-seok calls to ask for a meeting.

Woo-chul leaps to take the meeting, and works to impress Hyun-seok with his ideas, like incorporating survivors who’d lost their loved ones to large disasters mourned by the entire nation. Hyun-seok asks how Woo-chul would feel, hypothetically, if he heard his wife were dying, but only gets a vague answer about every case being different.

Hyun-seok notices that Woo-chul busts out a fountain pen identical to the one Yi-jin dropped, engraved with “I ♥ W.” He abruptly cuts the session short, deciding that this collaboration won’t work. He cites their differing approaches to the project, though it’s likely more about deducing that the pen means “Yi-jin (I-jin) loves Woo-chul.”

He fumes, imagining himself marching up to Nora and berating her for giving up her dreams and leaving her grandmother behind to be with a cheating bastard like Woo-chul. He stops himself, though, lamenting that Nora had to come back in his life so pitiable.

In the library, Hye-mi pouts over the health drink that’s on Min-soo’s desk, upset to hear that somebody’s been dropping them off regularly, though he doesn’t know who. She complains that he’s too popular among the female sunbaes, and flashes back to the beginning of the semester, before she’d met him. Her friend had pointed him out to her as the cutie who lives in the library, who’d been turning down every advance from a girl. That’s when Hye-mi first took an interest in him, and afterward planned the orientation run-in when she’d drunk his beers for him.

She says that girls keep giving him gifts because they don’t know he’s dating her, and he promises to tell the drink-giver the next time he encounters her. He promises that he doesn’t care about any girl in the school other than her, explaining that it’s really important for him to study and excel.

Nora waits in an empty classroom, unaware that the room got switched. Grumpy dancer Soon-nam sees her while passing by, and moments later Nora gets a text from Hye-mi alerting her to the swap. Soon-nam finds the new classroom where everyone’s gossiping about the department uproar, with the sunbaes worried about their futures and whether Pervo is going to retaliate by suing for defamation.

When everyone starts saying that it would be easiest if Nora just quit school, Soon-nam can’t take it anymore and storms into class, berating them for being cowardly and hypocritical. Hilariously, nobody knows who he is, but he says that while he’s not in their department, he’s speaking up “as someone ashamed to be a fellow twentysomething.” Awwwww. I knew he’d turn a corner, but I hadn’t even hoped for something this great.

Outside the room, Nora hears his tirade and sees him leave (though he doesn’t see her watching).

Afterward, she thinks over the students’ criticism of her (for not having to worry about getting a job or get along with professors), as well as Hyun-seok’s words that she’s in no place to judge.

The next day, Hyun-seok is waiting at Nora’s lunch bench with the excuse that he was given porridge, which he hates. He insists he was just in the area and that she should eat it instead of her convenience store food, and his sudden thoughtfulness is so strange that she wonders if he’s the one with a terminal illness.

Hyun-seok calls both Woo-chul and Yi-jin for a meeting, and shocks them by saying pleasantly that he will work together after all.

As he leaves, a former student snaps a picture of him on her phone, which triggers a memory: On the night Pervy Professor was groping the girls at the bar, a girl had been recording it on her phone. He discusses this with assistant Sang-ye, who doesn’t believe the girl will step up. Not when it’s obvious she’d be ostracized too.

Hyun-seok is determined to figure out a solution, now that he knows (thinks) that Nora is going to school to fulfill her dying wish. Moreover, keeping this as a surprise for her husband suggests she loves him a lot, which Sang-ye agrees with. He vows not to let Nora die pathetically, made an outcast for doing a good deed, and uses Nora’s words: “We were friends once.”

In a flashback, we see Nora coming upon Hyun-seok at the creek as he works through an idea for a performance using some leaves. She likes the sound of it and joins in, and calls him Seo Taiji—people thought Seo Taiji was really strange when he first debuted, but now he’s got the reputation of a maverick and creative trailblazer.

Hyun-seok is bashful at the flattery, but she says she’s serious, and proposes a bet to prove that in twenty years, he’ll be Korea’s top theater director. They’ll make a time capsule to open then, and see who was right.

So with new determination, Hyun-seok concocts a plan with Sang-ye, which involves engineering a run-in with video-recorder Seung-hyun. He hires the messenger service where she works to deliver a document to his office, acting surprised when she arrives.

He invites her to eat pizza with them, and as they chat, Sang-ye brings up the harassment incident and wonders how Nora will fare. Does Seung-hyun agree with her peers in thinking that the ajumma should just quit school? Seung-hyun is sharp enough to guess that the professors called her on purpose.

Woo-chul and Yi-jin celebrate the project with wine meant to celebrate his divorce, and she sighs about their marriage plans being delayed. They’re so image-conscious that she has their whole courtship timeline mapped out to look respectable on the outside.

Nora googles what it’s like to be an outcast at college, sighing to read of similar cases of older students being shunned. That’s when Seung-hyun calls her over to the bar where she works, where she hands over a drive containing the video. She explains what it is and leaves the choice to “unni” to decide what to do with it.

Burdened by the responsibility, Nora imagines the worst-case scenario where she’s jailed for making wrongful accusations of sexual harassment, and she downs drink after drink. Seung-hyun notices with increasing worry, and finally ends up calling Hyun-seok.

He finds Nora completely sauced, and she explains that she can’t go home yet because she has a really important decision to make, but hasn’t been able to come to a conclusion—she wants to keep going to school, but is afraid she won’t be able to.

He asks if she wants to go to school that badly, and she says she wants to do everything she couldn’t do at twenty “before I die,” and experience campus life. Tears start to form as she says plaintively, “It’s just that I’m twenty years late—is that a crime? I just wanted to live as a student. Why do I want to keep going to school, when everyone hates me so much? You do, and the students do too. With things like this, why did I step in?”

She sobs into her arms, and Hyun-seok says softly, “Because you’re you. You stepped in because you’re Ha Nora.”

In the morning No-ra wakes up in her own bed, still clutching the flash drive, with Hyun-seok’s words ringing in her ear: “Are you lacking courage? Think of when you grabbed Ra Yoon-young’s hair.” Slowly, memories from last night come back to her, like Hyun-seok driving her home. She’s never blacked out before and wonders if her recollections really happened.

A short while later, Pervy Professor gets an email in his inbox: Nora gives him the simple ultimatum to hand in his resignation today, or have her send the video file to the gender equality board. One look at the incriminating video has him gulping nervously.

He starts to call his attorney, but Hyun-seok appears at his door to advise against it. He suggests that Pervy resign rather than letting the case go to the authorities—because Hyun-seok intends to testify as eyewitness.

Nora tells herself she did the right thing, then refers to her bucket list, since one of her main goals has just been endangered. She’d wanted to live as a real college student, making friends and joining clubs, and now she pencils in a big question mark next to that item.

Hyun-seok calls and prods her for a thank-you for helping her last night. As soon as she thanks him, he claims a favor and tells her to come over to his office right away.

Nora does, and tries to get him to clarify what happened last night, because she recalls him saying things he shouldn’t know anything about, like the story about Yoon-young. Maybe she dreamed it up.

Hyun-seok doesn’t answer, just instructing Nora to sort through boxes of potential stories and pick out usable ones—stories that were already sorted and rejected, as Sang-ye had said earlier. HA. Inventing reasons to keep her around, are we?

So Nora gets to work reading through the submissions, and when a visitor arrives to meet with Hyun-seok, he instructs her to make her introductions. Which is when she looks up and gapes—it’s Woo-chul, who’s gaping right back at her, while Hyun-seok smiles his huge Cheshire grin.

COMMENTS

What are you up to, Hyun-seok? I don’t expect it’ll make sense until next week clarifies his intentions, since obviously this doesn’t work with what we know so far. But I do like this idea of Hyun-seok as a sort of fixer in Nora’s life, a (really, really grumpy) good-deeds elf determined to ensure that the next six months of her life go as happily as he can engineer… from a distance, of course, without giving up his outer facade of too-cool-for-school aloofness. I’m sure that cold shell won’t be able to remain unmelted for too long, and the fun is in watching him struggle to cling to the excuses, and to convince himself that he doesn’t care as much as he does. For that reason I’m glad that they made him so assy to start with, because if he’d been super-sweet and hapless, it would just be too sad watching him be all mopey and lovelorn about Nora now. I hated him (a tiny bit) when he was the jerk, but it makes things so much more gratifying now.

There’s an interesting layer of irony in Hyun-seok enacting his “well-dying” philosophy in the way he treats Nora now, to make her last six months worthwhile and valued, to give meaning to her death when he totally wouldn’t have done that knowing she isn’t actually dying. He’s in the position of teacher here, espousing these words of wisdom and putting together this big project about showing people how to heal and be happy in the everyday, and the thing spurring him to do this for Nora is a false belief.

I want to see Hyun-seok undergo a healing path as well, which means it would be good to see more of his life story at this stage, now that we’ve got a pretty good handle on Nora. I want to understand what happened to make him so hardened, and in a way that goes beyond the one-liner comedy premise where he was so upset that his first love moved away that he couldn’t get over her.

I’m curious to see how long they’ll draw out this misunderstanding of Hyun-seok’s—it’s a fantastic one for comedy as well as relationship development, but also one that you don’t want to drag out too long, lest the misunderstanding start to feel artificial. It’s something we encountered in Warm and Cozy, and despite that drama’s flaws, the terminal-illness mix-up was probably the best thing about it, and added zing to the first half.

It also adds angst to Hyun-seok’s romantic conflict, since he believes Nora’s in love with her husband—I really enjoy that misconception, but don’t want it to linger too long and give him too much unnecessary pain. I’m not ready to call Woo-chul a cheater because I can see a case where Woo-chul has done his best to be honorable, and went through appropriate steps to dissolve the marriage. But it’s how Hyun-seok sees him, and that opens us up to lots of fun, petty exchanges. Whether Hyun-seok tries to patch up the unpatchable, or get Nora to mend her heart and move on, I’m looking forward to all the comical crossed wires to come. The pettier, the better.

I agree with the plethora of other fans... I am so hooked on this show now. They got me really into it last episode and now I am waiting with bated breath for next weekend to roll around. Hurry!

My reaction when Min-Soo and his bratty gf come on:

"And why are you taking up Soon Nam's valuable screen time?" Ffd.

But seriously, they're my only complaint. It's hard to sympathize with an obnoxious son who doesn't appreciate his mother and the gf who has been particularly nasty to her. They need to develop these characters if they want us to care about them.

I want to wrap Nora in a blanket and protect from all evil. I know she's an adult, and older than me, but she's so innocent. I want her to see her lying cheating pos of a husband for who he is and realize she's better off without him.

I am still confused about the 20-year ago relationships. Was it some kind of love triangle, did she really love her now husband or what?

@ Windsun33

I believe No Ra just got on well with Hyun Seok even in high school. He had been hanging around her I believe, because he had a crush on her, (he even saw the time when she talked back to bully Yoon Young as students ... about how she pulled Yoon Young's hair ...but I thought it was Yoon Young who did the hair pulling LOL!) ...but she did not mind hanging out with him because he was creative and a could direct her dance moves. He was playing his own 'romance' in his mind, probably and was stunned that suddenly she was pregnant and had left school. He probably knew how much she had wanted to be dancing and in school. What @Chandler says below is probably right... when he saw her as an adult, he had expected more of her. But he finds that not only did she leave school (and him) for a person who does not appreciate her, but she has wasted her potential.

So I believe it was not a love triangle in that sense (yet!!!). But if ever a love triangle trope is interesting and well used, it will be this one.... being jealous of a lousy husband over that man's wife never even knew Hyun Seok liked her!!! :D

My gut feel is that Nora never really knew Ha Woo Jin. It was a fling that turned into a 20 year agreement.

He came from a wealthy family that could send him to continue his education Germany and shield their family from gossip. They didn't even talk to each other. To Ha Woo Jin, Nora's sole purpose was to fulfill his sexual requirements.

As Nora confided to her best friend, the sex became less frequent, and after their son was old enough Ha Woo Jin eventually had no further need for Nora. So he went looking for someone that could meet his intellectual and career needs.

While still believing her death was imminent, Nora's first attempt to write her biography centered around her son. I believe at this point, she realized that she never really loved her husband, and that her world had always revolved around her son. That was why she was trying to stall the divorce, so it would not interrupt her time with her son.

How the writers are going to make the audience like Ha Woo Jin enough for Nora to return to him is beyond me.

I would find a love relationship between Nora and Cha Hyun Seok far more interesting.

I was already enjoying this, and then ep4 happened! Happy to see the turnaround in grumpy petty Hyun-seok, although it is more satisfying to see him regret being such a jerk and be nicer to No-ra, while stalking her so obviously (hello, trench coat!) haha ;) At the end of ep3, I thought they revealed the diagnosis mishap too soon, but it ended up being better this way -- now, NR is aiming to live her life to the fullest, without her impending death looming over her.

I absolutely grinned at the final scene...HS with his Cheshire grin (squee!!!) showing assy hubby Woo-chul what he's missing out on. While I get the whole 'I'm learned, she's not so hence she's beneath me' crap, but it still makes me mad that he takes NR for granted (who made him get her pregnant at such a young age?! He should think that he ruined NR's life path! Jeez). I'm absolutely looking forward to him realizing how much he is losing, and to have hypocrite Yi-jin instead (yeah, I'd like my professor for 'marriage' class be a mistress to a married man, waiting for his divorce to be official. Real classy.)

I see I'm not only one who's excited to see Soo-nam defend NR, finally. Round of applause for him to stand up for her, cowardly dumbasses shunning her for standing up to Perv when no one else could. Kinda wished that the incriminating video was uploaded onto the school site, instead of this 'you resign quietly or I'm going to the gender equality board.' Argh. Asses like him should be publicly humiliated! -.-

And I'm also glad to see I'm not the only one absolutely annoyed with Hye-mi. Who told you to insert yourself into Min-soo's life, knowing he is a studious student...then have the nerve to get huffy that he didn't want to skip class to see a stupid movie? I can't wait til she finds out that the 'sunbae' she's getting jealous of is bf's mom ;)

I'm also surprised at people saying that they find Choi Ji-woo unlikeable because she 'can't act.' ?!? (At least she's not an emotionless cardboard lead actress who continues to get lead roles when she can't even emote...) I guess it's because I think she's a good actress? And please don't use Suspicious Housekeeper as the basis of that argument--that was the character. Frankly, I thought she showed a different side of herself with that, and here too. Just my opinion.

Can't wait til Friday!! :)

Ok, I lied. There's more.

Is it weird that I prefer Cha Hyun Seok to Ha Woo Jin? I just find him so amusing, lol. Probably because his jerkiness stems from how bothered he is that she never realized her full potential in life. It's one thing if he was just sour about his unrequited feelings (which, let's face it, he is), but he actually has always seemed more upset at the fact that the one who pushed him to belief in his ability to accomplish his dreams, didn't even accomplish her own. And that's what makes me so forgiving towards his faults.

I have a feeling he's not going to give away that she's a student yet. I think he's just going to have her "work" on the project or something. Perhaps, treat her with an air of importance in front of her husband?

Anyway, I'm definitely interested in what he has in store. I especially love this setup because he isn't doing it for the selfish reason of wanting her for himself. He's genuinely just taking it upon himself to make sure she leaves the world with no regrets. His plan might be a little radical, but I think it will be a lot of fun to watch. Again, I really think this mistaken illness plot works much better here and I already feel like the writer has a better handle on where they want to take it narratively.

I liked these episodes more than the first two. I still have some concerns for the drama here and there, but, in the end, I just really love the theme of getting a second chance at life.
Even though I'm much younger, I connect with her struggle so much right now. I've lately been thinking how there's still so many things I want for myself before I can be satisfied dying and have been pushing myself to take more opportunities. So I love that the drama is touching on these themes!

Love the OST that plays at the end of this episode! Can't wait until it comes out.

Dear @Chandler,

+100

I so agree with you. You've hit it I think,... the reason for Hyun Seok's hostility and dismay.

I feel too that Hyun Seok will not let on about No Ra's secret yet. He will want to make 'cheating' husband (as he thinks Woo Chul is) squirm quite a bit for a while and prove that No Ra is valuable and capable to others, even if her own family does not appreciate her.

Yes, I feel so much anticipation for the amazing twists and turns that will enter into the story now. :)

Man I was worried I was the only one watching this show. Glad to see recaps and comments about it, since it really is a great show.

I'm loving the show and loved this episode. I think my favorite moment was when Soon-nam walked out of the room and Nora watched him. The music playing was great. It's nice to see him warming up to her slowly. If this were a different drama that scene would have been the leading man's scene.

I'm glad to see her relationships with other girls develop too.

The ratings are excellent as well, high 3s to high 4s and the latest episode actually hit over 5 in the nationals. That's similar numbers to what Oh My Ghostess was pulling in, and about three to four times higher than normal for the cable station this show is on. The show's a genuine hit.

ooh it's been a while since i came across a drama like this one, a drama i would watch continuously without getting tired of it, i did not expect them to reveal her false results this soon, as for him knowing about her illness i guess we all needed to see him redeeming his sins; if i may to say , towards Ha NO RA, now i cant' wait to see him falling for her without even realizing it and being so jerky about it, yet i think he will have a major role in changing HA NO RA's life and self-esteem..

I am confident I know the direction of this story.

Although I prefer Cha Hyun Seok to Ha Woo Jin, it is my belief that in the end Nora will return to Ha Woo Jin. Traditional Korean public sentiment against divorce, no matter how big an ass the spouse might be, have tied the hands of the writing staff to buck the system here.

The groundwork for redeeming Ha Woo Jin was already started with the morning scene when Nora comes to after a night of heavy drinking. Ha Woo Jin nags offer that if she is nervous about her store opening, he will help her. How chivalrous of him.

Predictably, the competition between the two suitors will drive Ha Woo Jin to realize how he underestimated his wife...and so on and so forth. I'm sorry this is inevitable, because I enjoy disliking him and his son for being such selfish turds.

Cha Hyun Seok will end up with his long suffering and loyal teaching assistant (whose character I actually like a lot). I'm hoping more development of her character will bring her into standing on her own as is expected with Nora.

I would love to see more revelations of how Nora is truly the heart of Cha Hyun Seok's success. She believed and inspired him from a very early age when no one else did. It would be great to see their relationship flip from him being her "savior" to Cha Hyun Seok (and everyone else) recognizing that she was his backbone.

However, the sum of it, Nora is stuck with her loser husband and snotty son.

@ David

I like your insight here,..."I would love to see more revelations of how Nora is truly the heart of Cha Hyun Seok’s success. She believed and inspired him from a very early age when no one else did. It would be great to see their relationship flip from him being her “savior” to Cha Hyun Seok (and everyone else) recognizing that she was his backbone."

Yes, this was the other aspect of their youthful friendship. She meant a lot to Hyun Seok in more ways than one, thus his devastation when she left without warning and for marriage, of all things. And when he sees her again, she does not remember him at first, she has no further education and now he finds out her husband is so undeserving of all her sacrifice. What shock and horror!

No wonder he took time off to plan what to do. It's sweet of him that he has decided to really be a friend again instead of just brushing off what is actually no business of his. I love how the set up of his being mean to her first has played into her hands (unknowingly to her) now, so to speak, because he feels bad for being such a jerk, he's going to be super awesome in making up for it, but discreetly. :)

Honestly, I want to see Hyun Seok and No Ra together.
In the drama A Thousand Kisses the main lead was also married and met the main guy when she was married. During the divorce process, her husband tried to get back with her, but she stuck to her choice of getting a divorce (her husband had been cheating on her). It was difficult for her since they had a kid together (he was in elementary school and like No Ra she had given up her career in order to become a housewife). She and the main guy sort of got together.
And now your comment left me with doubt that Hyun Seok and No Ra will have their happily ever after. Maybe they will end up together. Since they, unlike the previous drama couple, are not in-laws nor is the woman older than the guy by some number of years. I am mostly trying to convince myself that Hyun Seok and Nora will get their HEA. If this drama goes Ohlala style I will have to bleed my eyes and get an inner brain cleanse (in order to recover from the train-wreck it will be).

< She and the main guy sort of got together.

No, they didn't. Everyone else got together or had a happy ending with no consequences of the atrocious things they did before, but the drama just had the leads stare at each other wistfully at the end.

I think they were supposed to end up together, but thanks to complaints from the public about the whole divorce issue and the immorality of it all (*rolls eyes*) that drama totally caved and just ending up reinforcing stigmas that divorced people face and not giving the OTP a happy ending. The cheating ex-husband got a new wife, but the leading lady was left to suffer.

Ughhh. Really don't like being reminded of that drama, leaves me so angry every time I think about it.

I suppose the story set-up with hypocrite husband having an affair (the adulterers are more compatible, I must say) and snotty son grown up in uni does make it possible for a No Ra & Hyun Seok love line.

@David

Do you mean Woo Chul? I think it's possible that my comment above may have confused you. I was comparing Lee Sang-yoon's character here to his character, Ha Woo-jin, in Liar Game because his character there happens to be a fan-favorite. So I wasn't referring to the husband there. Lol, for me, preferring Cha Hyun Seok to the husband is a given.

Anyway, I actually completely disagree. I think the drama is definitely setting it up for Nora's husband to realize how he's taken his wife for granted. And, certainly, they may redeem him a little. But I definitely think redeeming him a little is not enough to make him deserving of her. I hope she figures out that the divorce he keeps insisting on is the right decision for her. For 20 years, Woo Chul let her raise his child, and paid no thought to the fact that she sacrificed so much more than he did, her hopes, her dreams, in order to do so. If the drama was planning on putting her back with her husband, then they should have made the conflict between them more realistic and his actions more understandable.

They've made Woo Chul into a character that I would never really want her with, no matter what sort of changes he made because, in the end, he's only going to change after seeing her in a different light. Cha Hyun Seok vividly remembers the girl she used to be and continues to look for her in the present moment. But, even though he fell for her dancing, her husband doesn't even seem to remember the talented dancer she used to be or notice that she's wasted her life away. That's what's unforgivable to me and it's also why if he only sees how great she is after Cha Hyun Seok and her fellow classmates have helped her to change, than he doesn't deserve her at all. All he deserves is regret.

On top of that, I can just tell that they've set up Cha Hyun Seok to be the lead here. It is a rom-com and every ending so far has been focused on their interactions. There's already much more emotional connection between their brief high school moments than there is in 20 years of marriage with her husband. And they just have way better chemistry so I'm certain she'll be falling for him eventually. She better!

Woochul hasn't been a total jerk to her though? This isn't the first time he showed care for her albeit in his own way. He offered that they eat together after they sign the papers in episode 1. He reprimanded his son for shouting at his mom when she announced she's attending college. He tries to talk to her properly about their problems and explains his point to her. He was worried and concerned about her when she was crying in the bathroom. He didn't peek through her stuff even if he was so curious saying "this isn't the kind of guy you are woochul". He also separated their bed knowing they're divorced in practice and he has a gf. So the store thing didn't seem out of place with how he's been treating her so far.

In my opinion, Woochul simply got married too early to a girl he never properly got to know. He married her after finding out he got her pregnant instead of simply abandoning her and running off abroad. But once there, he was too wrapped up in studying. They never properly fell in love imo. They're just on different wavelengths. They're both coming from different points so they never meet in the middle. But you can see that Nora actually surprises him sometimes with how simple she thinks and that's something that is different from him.

I don't think they'll get back together though. Woochul will see the Nora he never got to know and he will probably regret the divorce, he will have problems with his gf, want Nora back but Nora will fall in love with Hyunseok. Nora will become friends with Hyemi and that will help her reconcile with Minsoo. Sangye will get with Soonam and they all live happily ever after.

This was in wikipedia: "Choi majored in aerobic dance at Pusan Women's College. She later enrolled in Hanyang University's Department of Theater and Film and completed her first year; however she had to withdraw from college studies due to her hectic work schedule."

How wonderfully circular life can be.

I love this episode the most, the way Hyun Seok tries to make up for how mean he was to No Ra was just so cute. Omg!! I love Soon Nam for standing up for No Ra, I feel like he's going to fall for her!

I just remember the actor who play soon nam, played the younger version of lee sang yoon in goddess of fire. He was so adorable in that drama too! Don't know how i can wait for next week episode, it's too long!!

OMG, that's where I first saw him! I didn't even watch that drama, but I thought he was lovely in the first episode or so. When I saw him again in Masked Prosecutor I was going crazy trying to figure out where I knew him.

Yes! The moment I've been waiting for - Hyunseok stops being annoying and starts being more adorable towards Nora.

I'm glad Hyemi isn't completely shunning her. She was the only one who informed Nora of the room change after creating a separate chat group without her. I have a feeling they're going to be good friends and Hyemi will help Nora reconcile with Minsoo.

Speaking of Minsoo. I think he isn't a complete ass. His teenage outburst when he found out his mom was going to attend his university was pretty normal and other than being apathetic, he isn't totally bad. I feel that his whole attitude about studying is so he doesn't end up like his mom. Couple that with Dad's contract of no dating or off to the army, it's probably Dad's way of not letting Minsoo make the same mistake he did when he was younger.

I can't totally hate on Woochul and Professor Girlfriend either. They're both cute in a weird way. The gf can get pretty childish too and I'm waiting for the day Woochul begin to have problems with her too haha!

It just occurred to me that the "Optimum Tear-Jerking Moment" (OPTJ) might actually occur when Cha Hyun Seok reveals how much Nora meant to him.

If I was writing the script (and thank God I'm not) it would happen in a public forum when someone asks Cha Hyun Seok what his greatest loss was (which is the theme of his project).

A trip to Costco for warehouse quantity procurement of boxes of facial tissues would be a necessary preparation for such a scene.

The cameras could catch the jaw dropped audience turning in unison to focus on a totally wide-eyed shocked Nora.

[Heavy sigh] I love Korean drama.

This drama makes me so giddy and excited :)

I agree that Hyun Seok thinks he's playing his own melodrama and laughed when No RA asked him if he thought he was an idol.

I'm actually glad that the drama is moving quickly with her finding out that she is not ill and Hyun Seok learning about the affair instead of dragging it out.

I like this drama so much and can't believe I have to wait another week for a new episode D:

Is there anybody else having a feeling that there might be something more about No Ra's "disappearance" beside the fact that she is pregnant? There are some meaningful pauses scattered through episode 1&2 (about granny dying?). This show gave me the vibe of Heart to Heart, where i was enjoying the cute romcom and suddenly got clobbered with melo...

GOD, I've falling in love again with Lee Sang Yoon in this drama. I really hate him in Angel eyes and once loved him in My Daughter Seo Young. After Angel eyes I haven't watch the Liar Games, I don't know why? This is the only drama atm that I'm watching. The rest seems dull and boring and I can't wait for the new drama starring Heal me and Kill me half brother and sister (forgot what was the title). I think Lee Sang Yoon hair style in this drama made him hot and fly...hihi

I'm loving it! I actually tuned in not knowing about the actual plot bc my new crush has a part! Lee Jae Joon! He hasn't spoken yet and I don't know if he will. He's Son Naeun's character's marriage partner in the world's weirdest college GE (besides the sociology of miley cyrus offered at skidmore). But if you've been captured by him as well, check out The Lover. It's kind of different but feels real for a kdrama.

I was really surprised when woo chul put a boundary between yijin and his divorce this episode. he showed a different, less selfish, side of himself and I wonder if he ever did love Nora, and it was more the suddenness of the baby and marriage which overwhelmed him. I could actually support him and Nora reconciling- I would love woo chul to look at nora again the same way he did when she was dancing. also young nora is so beautiful and bubbly. it's lovely to see her return to that, and I think it may trigger woo chul own wistfulness and consideration of the past that Nora and hyunseok are already going through. the considering looks he gives Nora suggest something.

I thought hyun seok was claiming Nora as his girlfriend at the end of this episode...

and min soo and his girlfriend are so dull. the girlfriend needs to let him study. seriously why can't they study together in the library or something. a clear mismatch.

I am LOVING this show! I was a little skeptical at first, but now it is absolutely my favorite thing to watch. I adore every character, especially Nora. Watching her come out of her shell and become a strong woman once more is so satisfying. And I can see why Hyun Seok still has feelings for her after all of these years. I'm really looking forward to seeing more about their youth-I think there is a lot more to it then meets the eye.

I also like that the husband and mistress aren't portrayed as stereotypical bad people, because I do understand where he is coming from and why he wants a divorce. But on the flip side, I sort of hope he gets to see happy, alive Nora and maybe even falls a little bit in love with her again. Obviously, I'm on team Hyun Seok, but a little jealously can be very satisfying!

About the son-I don't fully understand what his deal is. I think there is more to his relationship with his parents then what we have seen, and I look forward to exploring that further, but I'm getting a little tired of his constant ignoring Nora thing. I get it, he is a teenager, but she is awesome and loves him so much. I can't wait for him to start realizing that. Overall, I love the show and cannot wait for next week. Thank you dramabeans for recapping because I probably wouldn't have watched it otherwise!

@Growingbeautifully suggested this drama to me - and I'm really glad she did. I had meant to check it out but, had I done it on my own without her recommendation, I wouldn't have stayed past the first episode.

After a very rocky start, it seemed to turn the corner around the halfway mark of episode 3. By the end of the ep, I was hooked. Episode 4 has settled into a nice rom com with heart groove.

They've even washed half of the kabuki-thickness makeup off of Choi Ji-woo. Maybe they'll get the rest of it off in a few more episodes and we'll get to see what a lovely face and engaging personality she has.

It's time for a bunch of character development - both the kind where we learn about people's backstories and the kind where the characters grow. I'm confident we'll see that in the next few episodes.

love this drama and I want to see some character and relationship development of Nora and her high school friend. They look supportive towards one another and give each other a space to grow, unlike the husband.

I don't like the gf's son and don't really care about their relationship. In fact, I hate it whenever they have some screens! :)
Just like some commenters here, I hope the son ends up with the hardworking girl. Also, I hope he realizes that his mama needs some love and respect from him. He is way too rude for a mother who has devoted her love, time and energy in rising him.

The part where No ra ignored her husband the morning of her drunken night were left out in the recap. I like how her husband seemed rather perplexed by her change in hairstyle and her cheery behaviour. Oh I can't wait till No ra starts moving on with her feeling towards her husband and her husband falls for her again. Oh, the gratification. No ra please be with Hyun seok.

Not sure what Hyun Suk is up to but I like his daring!! Gosh this drama is so much fun to watch. I just wish I knew what was happening with No Ra's face. She's an awesome actress I can tell but she's a bit long in the tooth to make her pairing with Lee Sang Yoon feel authentic.
