Love, friendship, and cycling in cable drama Riders: Catch Tomorrow

Three familiar television faces are heading over to cable for a new drama on E Channel, with the series titled Riders: Catch Tomorrow casting Kim Dong-wook (Maids, Dandelion Family, Coffee Prince), Lee Chung-ah (Flower Boy Ramyun Shop, Wonderful Mama), and Choi Yeo-jin (The Lover, Valid Love, Emergency Couple).

The drama will depict the lives of young adults getting their start in the world, growing up and falling in love and figuring themselves out. The show promises to take a realistic and relatable approach while also being about rickshaws made from bicycles. I know, that sounds random, right? At least that explains where the title comes from; we have a company making rickshaws and a character who bicycles, and I’m guessing there’ll be room for some metaphors as well.

Kim Dong-wook will play an entry-level employee at a large corporation, armed with solid specs and a great resume, having had his elite course prepared for him by his helicopter mom. But one day, he decides to go into business with two of his childhood friends, making, for some reason, rickshaws. It’s a quirky and unexpected choice of product, but Kim said he’d found the script quite engaging, and the director explained that they’d use the unusual topic to add a fresh approach to the story of youthful friendship and romance. It’ll also allow the show to travel all over Seoul, taking note of all its various nooks and crannies.

Lee Chung-ah plays a young woman still working part-time jobs while dreaming of making it as an illustrator. She meets Kim Dong-wook and his friend at Riders (I’m guessing that’s his company name) and falls into a love triangle with them. (Side note: Lee Chung-ah and Kim Dong-wook have acted together before in the romantic comedy film Finding Destiny, though they weren’t the leads in that.) And Choi Yeo-jin plays a former cycling athlete who starts working at Kim Dong-wook’s company, who has a special connection with his friend.

Directing will be PD Choi Do-hoon of Empress starring Jang Shin-young and Unemployed Romance with Namgoong Min and Lee Young-ah, both dramas on E Channel. Admittedly the drama sounds a little random and offbeat, but that doesn’t have to be a negative thing. This kind of story is so dependent on tone that it’s difficult to know what we’re getting till we’ve gotten it—but I will, as ever, hope for the best.

Riders: Catch Tomorrow is planning for an early November premiere, with 12 episodes total.

I like Choi Yeo Jin. I think, besides Jung Eun Ji, she has the best smile I have seen on a Korean celebrity.

I love her and am really hoping her part here is unconventional. She was the only watchable thing in Emergency Couple for me.

Hm, this definitely has potential. I like the idea of taking a traditional product and sprucing it up, as well as for the hidden places it can take them around the city.

KDW is a fine actor who can really, really act in almost any genre from films such as The Concubine and No Regret to dramas such as Coffee Prince and Maids. Why don't they give him more roles? K-ent certainly likes tall, semi-untalented idol-actors and tall, semi- talented actors but never gives a fair chance to actors who have a knack for their craft. Nevertheless, even in a minor cable channel as well as a peculiar show, I'm sure his performance will be impeccable as always.

I think I can tolerate even a mediocre script for the chance to see various nooks and crannies of Seoul by rickshaw or bicycle. I'm looking forward to this!
