Lee Jin-wook, Moon Chae-won to headline revenge drama Goodbye Mr. Black

Ooh, Lee Jin-wook (The Time I’ve Loved You) starring in a revenge drama? I like the sound of that. So much brooding to be done! Count of Monte Cristo-inspired manhwa adaptation Goodbye Mr. Black has secured a Wednesday-Thursday timeslot on SBS this fall. The production has been courting Moon Chae-won (Good Doctor) to play the leading lady, and now both leads are confirmed.

The revenge melodrama is an adaptation of a 1980s manhwa series by Hwang Mi-na set in England and Australia, about a man who gets betrayed by his best friend and lover, and framed for a crime. After time spent abroad, he returns with a new identity to get his revenge. It remains to be seen how the story will be adapted, since early announcements about the drama mentioned extended overseas shoots, but the latest casting stories don’t indicate that it’s set abroad.

Lee Jin-wook will star as a Navy SEAL and a member of the Underwater Demolition Team, who was met with misfortune and betrayed by his friend out of the blue. He was once an optimistic man, but after being stabbed in the back by his best friend, he only dreams of vengeance. The drama is about his revenge plot, as he decides to go up against the friend to find out the truth behind his downfall.

In order to invent a new identity, he gets fake-married to Moon Chae-won, a bright, cheerful young woman who’s rough around the edges and does what she pleases. Despite it being a fake relationship for appearance’s sake, she’ll begin to change him in unexpected ways, and help rebuild his ability to love and trust in other people. Yeah but… he’s still going to get his revenge, right?

Directing is PD Lee Chang-min of Bride of the Sun and Birth of a Beauty, and writing is Moon Hee-jung of Can You Hear My Heart and I Miss You. Goodbye Mr. Black follows Village on Wednesdays and Thursdays in November.

Still can't believe CYHMH and I Miss You were written by the same person. Boggles the mind.

Love this pairing though, Here's hoping this is more like the former and less like the latter. And yes, he better get a proper revenge, or it's not a Count of Monte Cristo remake.

I really thought before they would offer this to the stronger alpha male plus villain-look like lead actors like Kim Nam Gil, Go Soo, Jo In Sung or Eric Mun.

Lee Jin Wook is totally betha male lead, not saying he isn't good but it seems the actor lack of screen presence which make us easy to turn on second male lead site lol.

Still exciting about the teaser though.

Really? I would think "bright, cheerful young woman" is a complete contrast to MCW's Nice Guy role. Unless you are counting the amnesia parts, the character Seo Eun Gi was anything but cheerful and bright in Nice Guy...jaded, suspicious, and vulnerable would be a more apt description.

I haven't seen the infamous TTWINL, so I don't view LJW as a bad cast. I liked LJW in Nine, which was a fantastic drama production. And I've seen what Writer Moon is capable of...so keeping my hopes up for fantastic chemistry and great character development.

Haven't seen Chae Wonnie is so long, I'm just thankful she's back on my screen.

Considering the fact that the manhwa comes from the 80s and Count of Monte Cristo is a novel by A.Dumas, it's probably the other way around. The revenge plot has been copied and adapted and butchered and every single verb in the dictionary time and again (and again)...because there is no such thing as parthenogenesis in art!

I agree, it sounds more like Nice Guy 2. This is not a first hand adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo. The main plot is different in the comic book version. It feels very modern too.

Lee Jin Wook isn't at the level where he gets offered these types of roles first - I think it's fair to say that it was rejected by the people we would rather have seen. What a pity! I would have paid money to see So Ji Sub and Moon Chae Won together.

Required fields are marked *

Yes So Ji Sub, I think would have been perfect for the role. He have that rough up look that work as the dark revenging male lead but has the soft touches or side. He also have strong screen presence. But sadly he already signed on another drama with SMA.

0

Required fields are marked *

I am so happy Moon Chae Won is finally back but I never expected the male lead to be Lee Jin Wook. I mean I have nothing against him but he just doesn't give that alpha male aura that the character needed. Yes he can act sure, but the aura and screen presence is also very much needed in this type of revenge drama and character especially he is the main lead. I was expecting them to cast Alpha Male actors who has bright and dark aura at the same time. The type of actor who can look sweet and kind but can also be antagonistic at the same time. LJW can act but he just lack the certain aura and presence to captivate the whole public and carry a whole drama himself.

I think So Ji Sub, Jo In Sung, Ji Sung, Kim Nam Gil are some of the older actors who has that aura. Yoo Ah In, Ji Chan Wook, Kim Soo Hyun, Park Hae Jin, Joo Won etc. for the new generation actors. But since LJW is already casted I just really hope he can pull this off really well because he is the main lead and the success of the drama will be greatly affected by his performance and pull to the audience since the drama centers around his character.

Required fields are marked *

I'm almost certain many - if not all- of those actors were offered the role and they rejected it. Because Lee Jin-wook does not have the popularity, success rate or star power to be paired with Moon Chae-won in a drama that is most likely to be riding on the male lead's acting powess. She'll kill it, as she always does. But he's going to be bland and Zzzzz like he always is. Of course, even if he proves me wrong I won't be there to see it.

Kim Nam-gil or So Ji-sub along with all those younger actors would've been so ideal with MCW. Oh well, we'll see how this eventually turns out.

0

Required fields are marked *

agree with your list except for joo won..I don't think his acting is that great compared to the others you mentioned he seems nice irl though.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

well, people in the past claimed that So Ji-sub wouldn't be any good in a romcom because he only did melodramas as a leading man (Master's Sun), and that Song Joong-ki couldn't pull off the role of a cold-hearted manipulator because he had a baby face (Nice Guy). And look at how those dramas were received....

If Lee Jin-wook is to be written off for TTILY, then so should Ha Ji-won. But sometimes, dramas are the thing that sucks and even the best actor can't save them.

0
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

idk, rom coms are much less demanding than melos, and SJK is so talented that his looks aren't going to keep him pigeonholed if he's given half a chance. I haven't seen him in TTILY so I can't comment on his work there, but Lee Jin-wook hasn't impressed me in anything else either. As for Ha Ji-won, I actually feel like she has gone down hill since she got super successful...but that's off-topic haha.

I'm not upset that he got the role (not a fan of the writer so I'm not too invested), but I would feel a lot better about this drama if Moon Chae-won were the revenge-seeking navy seal, and Lee Jin-wook were the stereotypical love interest. Between the two of them, she deserves the more interesting and demanding role.

... which is too bad. There are tons and tons of male revenge stories out there, and quite honestly, there isn't much to do in this genre but to repeat what has been done before.

Female revenge on the other hand ...

Nine Time Travel still his best role to date where viewers would be mesmerized with his loving gaze, intense gaze and heartwrenching gaze. First i saw this article, i thought it was Daebak! Never thought they would cast someone not hallyu star and i guess the casting department do find LJW has acting chops and being hidden gem all this time. Not a Shinhwa fans so I could say this as drama lover objectively. Eric is definitely better actor than Lee Jin Wook, Personally, Eric is one of korean actor that really effective in raw emotion (which kinda important for heavy melodrama) and pretty versatile despite his limited times for actings. LJW's character in SMW was easy to root and felt symphaty (who wants to root for male lead who slaps the girl like Eric did in SMW though?) but LJW's actings was big NO.

Even in that messy Spy Myung Wol, Eric is the only one carried the show instead of Han Ye Seul (which the story originally was female centric).

Required fields are marked *

Agree with you. Between the 2 roles, it's easier to root for Lee Jin Wook in Spy Mung Wol because he played the good guy. Good guy often get rooted more by the viewers. Eric's character is riskier and more complex. I don't like the his character in Spy Myung Wol but his acting was better. I don't like his character but I like him as the actor. While I like Jin Wook's character in Spy Myung Wol, he came off non nonchalant at time and he didn't have the fighting skills either. His fight scenes were bad.

Jin Wook is good at a soft, kind hearted guy and he's a good actor but I'm on the fence about his intensity. So far I'm not sold on that one. Don't know what the production team going to take this Monte Cristo remake to. I thought an alpha male would be better suited for the lead actor but may be the production not emphasize so much on the revenge aspect.

I'm really happy to see Moon Chae Won is back!

About Lee Jin Wook: I won't judge too fast. I haven't seen him anything yet. But I remember when people thought Song Joong Ki wouldn't be able to pull off the role of Kang Maru. And he did convince the viewers otherwise with his performance. Same could go for LJW. This could be THE drama for him! Who knows!?

I know SJK is on a different acting level but still everyone saw his face and thought "no this man can't do the cold/bad boy". But he was able to do so.

I think with this drama everything depends on the writing (please not I miss you makjang!!!) and directing. So I'm looking forward to the finalized cast and the production. :)

BTW I actually thought they would offer the male lead to Jung Kyung Ho because he worked with the writer on Smile, You! :D

I could see why many people are so split on ljw; you either love him or think hes bland. It's really interesting how I can go from completely being captivated by the same guy with so much screen presence and charm in three musketeers and then feeling meh about him in the time we were not in love. It really comes to show how character writing can really change perspective. As well as genre. Me thinks ljw needs to land a well written character that has many layers. And showcases his brooding skills. He actually has very emotive eyes. He's not meant to shine in even the most mediocre rom coms like some actors who are oozing gravitas no matter the role. Although I would have preferred someone else for this role, at least this guy can act and it could be way worse: they could have selected a popular idol who can't act.

I am quite disappointed to be honest.I really love moon chae won but LJW is meh to me as the main lead..I think he is quite good-looking and I don't dislike him but I was picturing someone more charismatic as the main lead..I was hoping that maybe Kim jae wook would finally get to be the main lead in something after rejecting that horror drama starring moon geun young plus He and MCW would make an amazing couple..IDK there is like a bunch of other guys I could see in this e.g Jo in sung, park ki woong, kim nam gil, jung kyung ho,yoo yeon suk,joo jin mo etc. I'm probably still gonna watch but I'll likely be wondering how much better the drama would've been with a different male lead.
