News bites: August 30, 2015

Kim So-yeon, Kwak Shi-yang

  • I stopped watching season 4 of We Got Married when one of my favorite couples left (SoRim forever!), but I’m going to have to start tuning in again because I adore this pairing already — Kim So-yeon (Falling for Innocence) and Kwak Shi-yang (Oh My Ghostess) are the newest couple to get hitched on the show. Filming began a few days ago on August 27, and they’ll replace the spots vacated by Lee Jong-hyun and Go Seung-yeon. There’s an age difference of seven years between the two (the largest age gap between an older woman and a younger man in the history of the show), but this is a noona romance (however fabricated) I can totally get behind. The two will make their first appearance on September 5. [Osen]
  • Perhaps the lackluster performance of The Time I’ve Loved You had a hand in his decision, but officially, Lee Jin-wook has cited scheduling conflicts as his reason for turning down an offer to appear with Ha Ji-won and Chen Bolin in the upcoming Korean-Chinese movie Risking Life for Love. Stepping in to play Ha’s man will be Chun Jung-myung (Heart to Heart), and the rom-com and directorial debut from Song Min-kyu will begin filming before the end of the year. [MBN]

  • Chun Jung-myung, Park Jung-ah, Ohn Joo-wan

  • Park Jung-ah (the undeniably cool and likable second female lead in Oh My Ghostess) has landed the role of a former TV announcer and daughter-in-law of a chaebol in Dazzling Temptation, MBC’s upcoming Monday-Tuesday drama. The show airs after Hwajeong on October 5.
    [Osen]
  • SBS’s upcoming Village has continued its casting spree, adding Ohn Joo-wan (Punch) as the director of a steel company. His character had hoped to become an architect and had studied to become one, but after spending a decade in the States, he returns to Korea and finds that following his dream career isn’t in his destiny. I’m curious to know how the white-collar worker fits into the story about a sleepy, peaceful village that gets turned upside down when a corpse turns up. Village airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays and follows the conclusion of Yong-pal in October. [Joongang]

  • Song Ji-hyo, Kang Gary

  • Running Man‘s Monday Couple Kang Gary and Song Ji-hyo are currently shooting guest spots on Chinese talk show Day Day Up (Tian Tian Xiang Shang), the show that Song Seung-heon and Liu Yifei recently appeared on as a couple. They arrived in Changsa on August 26 and began filming the next day. [TV Report]
  • They have to be getting a kick out of this: In their latest pairing as mother and son, Kim Hae-sook and Kim Rae-won (the elder Kim was his mom in Thousand Day Promise, and a maternal figure to the younger Kim in the film Sunflower), the relationship will take a chilling turn. In Resurrection, a movie based on the 2011 novel Absolute Judgment by writer Park Hae-ik (she also wrote the Seonam Girls’ High Investigation Unit novels), the undead come back to wreak havoc on the living. Kim Rae-won is a detective in the film adaptation, while Kim Hae-sook is his deceased mother who comes back to kill him. Filming begins next month. [Ohmy News]

  • Kim Hae-sook, Kim Rae-won

  • Suspicions abound that Yong-pal was plagiarized from the manhwa City Conquest. Netizens have noticed striking similarities between the seventh book of the manhwa series and the show: an heiress who needs to be asleep, the existence of an older brother to said heiress, and the hero being a doctor who illegally treats mobsters. The graphic novel was completed in 2011, while Yong-pal wasn’t planned until 2013. The production company, HB Entertainment, has strongly denied the allegations and SBS has also refuted the rumors. [Dong A]
  • True to expectations (and yay for Yoo Ah-in!), the Ryu Seung-wan-directed Veteran has been a box office sensation. Since its release on August 5, the movie has already become the highest-grossing domestic film of 2015, it’s been the consecutive weekly box office leader, and this weekend it hit over 10 million in ticket sales. On August 29, Veteran surpassed 10.1 million on its 25th day in theaters. [Star Today]

I'm dying to watch it too. Kudos to Yoo Ah-in for making smart career choices. When Ryu Seung-wan writes and direct his movies you know it's going to be a hit. On top of that he cast the talented and top actor Hwang Jung-Min to headline it. I can't hardly wait to see it!

Yay for Yoo Ah-in making such a box office smash, I can't wait to see him as a villain (the troubles of international fans lol)

I stopped checking in on We Got Married after the SoRim couple left, though Lee Jong-hyun and Gong Seung-yeon made a lovely and super-cheesy couple too, judging by the clips I saw of their episodes. I still have fond memories of her from Heard It Through the Grapevine, she's a decent actress and has a rather striking, unusual type of beauty.

And since we got fresh casting news for The Village...... this means Kim Jae-wook is the male lead, right? Right?! (please let it be true! I would be so thrilled to have Moon Geun-young leading the cast, and Kim Jae-wook paired up with her)

Me too! Although, I'm surprised Kim So-yeon agreed to do WGM. I love both her and Kwak Shi-yang so I'm inclined to check it out the first episode or two with them. Who knows if I'll continue since, I totally agree with you about usually avoiding WGM. Theres something icky about having totally scripted "reality" TV and its also just about the cheesiest show ever.

why eonni why??
she's a good actress, and far from gossip.. she doesnt need this 'publicity' to be big.. she's well-known in korea..

some actors just get less and less popular after this show.. but yeah, some others got recognized.. i just hope she's in a good luck this time..

instead of doing this show, better you do some movies la eonni.. sad.

I actually quite surprised why she agreed to appear in WGM.. She already has recognition and establishes herself as leading lady. Usually WGM only reserved for idols or unknown actors.

Yeah I was just thinking that. It's more of an idol show or a younger actor who needs exposure. Or those waning idols.

Did something happen to her in Korea for her to appear in this show?

She got tied up in a lawsuit involving her ex-boyfriend. I guess WGM is the first stop on her redemption parade :(

Required fields are marked *

She doesn`t need any redemption because she did not do anything wrong. It was already established that. And her image in the industry is still good. I don`t think she is doing this show for a professional recognition (she doesn`t need that) but maybe she will appear in this show because is a new experience for her. She is still very shy and she avoided variety shows for so long but now she is coming out of her shell more often. (Real Men Female edition last year and now this). I don`t want her on WGM because I hate this kind of programs but I hope she will have some fun filming it.

Same here, I'm not a fan of that kind of variety show. They must've paid her a lot and hoping to raise the rating.

I'm surprised to hear her agree to the show because I think she is better without it. Who knows maybe this will be a positive thing.

I was also surprised that such an established leading actress would join WGM. Usually its up and coming actors/idols that goes on to promote themselves. Perhaps its to regain her reputation and fans love after that scandal.

WGM as a show has become so contrived now that it might as well be a mini series instead of "reality" TV.

I am so happy that summer had the surge of domestic film box office: from northern limit, assassination and veteran.

As for new upcoming movies i am excited and hoping for great turnout for the one with ha jung woo with director(Lady), and also the other film that stard yeo jin goo with Sol KyungGu(a long way home)

Anyway I so dont want kwak SiYang in WGM. That show is already littered with so much bad rep that I just stay away from that show. And I dont think KSY needs that to get his name out there with this show. He is steadily making good impression in his projects so why be involved if scandalful show.
And wasnt Kim SoYeon recently linked to a scandal involving her boyfriend. I think it was during the mid-to-end filming of Falling For Innocence. So are they broken up already? And if so, isnt this a little too soon to hop on this show about "fake reality" marriage...?

Yoo Ah In is on the brink to another hit movie with "Sado" after "Veteran".

Good move, Ah In! Two thumbs up for you!!

The Throne (Sado) is going to be another big hit. It can't get any better than Song Kang‑Ho at the helm. I absolutely worship him as an actor. Then add director Lee Joon-Ik to it who is fantastic when it comes to directing sageuks etc. I have very high expectations for this film.

I'm happy for Moon Geun Young who is playing the role of Lady H. So Ji Sub is making a cameo appearance as Yi-san which means the ending won't be tragic.

Hoping for a world-wide release.

0

Required fields are marked *

I agree- it was not entirely THAT awful- to the point of having it be "the drama that must not be named." There were some bright moments that I liked.

I think people were expecting "Sega" levels of popularity considering it's HJW, and LJW can basically have chemistry with a tree- so what could go wrong? The multiple writers switch, the live shooting and the miscast of the second leads made this drama go down hill.

On the other hand- I would love to see HJW & LJW in another project together, but I agree that it's too soon.
Still- it would have been cool to have LJW & Bolin Chen in a scene together- imagine their BTS chatter :)

I feel conflicted for KSY in WGM, it's either you explode with popularity on the show, or you go down the drain with drama and bad rep. Though I think it's smart of WGM to make a noona romance, because alot of the recent couples are more idols therefore targeting teens. I hope Cordon does well and soar in fame from his lovable scenes of OMG!

Why is everyone saying Yong-pal is plagiarized? Geez, every time something even slightly original goes on air... didn't My Love From the Star get hit with a plagiarism accusation too? What's more, I heard City Conquest has a supernatural edge to it.

Like the representatives said, this is just an attempt to ruin a successful drama.

SBS is so powerful they can bury scandal in an instant. Who knows behind the every scene. Read the manhwa, then judge it as you please. Only listen to one side's story doesn't make your statement legit.

Oh, fans are powerful too, to the extend they can bury poor writer who's her/his original work has been stolen only for the sake of their faves. Just like Dok Gojin said, "You mess with a mountain, you get buried."

Poor. How poor.

I really like Kim So Yeon as an actress. She may not be as celebrated as a Ha Ji Won or a Gong Hyo Jin but she is a solid leading lady material with a string of good dramas behind her. I'm not sure if I would faithfully watch WGM though since (aside from wanting to see a favorite celebrity in variety) I think the whole premise of the show is a bit silly. Kim Hae Sook can do good and evil at the turn of a dime so really good casting choice on their part with Resurrection.

Just think it like a rom com, that gives you many spotlight, most actors, idols that went there got more magazine photoshoots, cfs, dramas castings and shows casting - if you do right in WGM it is a win win for everyone.

I add total revenue and budget for every film on my site but obviously that doesn't tell the full story. You'd need to consider that, of the total revenue:

1) approximately 60% goes to the production companies and 40% to the distributors, but then again
2) in cases of vertical integration, like films distributed by CJ E&M, produced by CJ affiliates, and screened in multiplexes where CJ has part ownership, the money pretty much remains within the CJ umbrella
3) need to factor in foreign pre-sales agreements, which are not as profitable as they used to be, but still would give you a good 20% to 50% of the budget.

Generally Veteran is making more money now because it cost far less, but Assassination has more upside overseas (less local, more spectacle and of course you have Jeon Ji-Hyun, Ha Jung-Woo, Lee Jung-Jae, et. al.) and chances to make big money. And besides, it continues to screen in plenty of theaters so it could easily get in the 13 to 15 million zone.

Veteran has sold to 26 countries before its domestic premiere date. So far it has garnered $71.6 million. It has bumped "The King and the Clown" (10.5) out of the exclusive top ten Korea Box Office Of All Time, and soon will challenge "The Host" (10.9), "Haeundae" (11.3), "The Attorney" (11.3), and even "The Assassination" (12.1).

Veteran will likely hit 12 million within this week, judging from its fast pace (11 million less than 1 month). Each weekend since its release it has managed to capture over 40% of the box office pie, and, to state the obvious, it's no done yet.

On the paper, Veteran is gaining better total revenue.

@Francesca
No way....this is awesome. What a year at the cinema. I'm loving this.

I think The Throne has an advantage here by being released close/during the Chuseok holiday.

0

Wow there are actually movie fans around here. Thank you for the informative breakdown. I'm going to check out your site for more :). If only Box office mojo was this good at reporting numbers for foreign films.

I agree that Assassination has the star power to generate more profit over-seas compared to Veteran and The Throne.

I'm actually excited with the competition this year between the top actors. Ha Jung-Woo and Lee Jung-Jae vs Hwang Jung-Min vs Song Kang Ho. I'm rooting Song Kang Ho to beat the others at least with domestic ticket sales. I'm totally bias here with Song and director Lee Joon-Ik.

I think it's pretty amazing if all 3 movies break into the top 10 in the same year.
