Kim Woo-bin and Suzy couple up in Lee Kyung-hee romance drama

Wow, well if this isn’t a new (drama) power couple in the making: Kim Woo-bin (Heirs) will be headlining a drama with Suzy (Gu Family Book), and it’ll come from writer Lee Kyung-hee, who has penned a number of hit dramas, among them Nice Guy, Thank You, A Love to Kill, and I’m Sorry, I Love You.

The drama must have been casting in super-secret meetings, since both stars are confirmed (which hardly ever happens these days, in the age of the wishy-washy press release). Kudos on pulling that off, that’s for sure. The new project is called Lightly, Ardently, a (working) title that’s meant to be contradictory; the first word speaks of a thoughtless or unserious kind of love, while the second suggests deeply emotional.

The drama tells the story of a couple who were painfully separated in an ill-fated relationship, who meet again later as total opposites, one as a haughty superstar and the other as a documentary PD. I have no trouble imagining Kim Woo-bin as a Hallyu singer-actor megastar, with a sharp brain and ultra-cynical personality. Suzy will be attempting an image transformation (let’s all cross our fingers on this one), going from innocent and sweet to an extremely servile, feeble, but also materialistic character who has no pride when it comes to money. That’s quite the mix of traits, but sounds like it’ll make for an interesting character. The romance will start off prickly but develop into a more ardent connection, and knowing writer Lee, the developing melo will be sure to tug, if not break, our hearts.

It’s true that Lee’s most recent drama, weekend family series Wonderful Season, wasn’t quite as successful as her others, though she’s done much better in the miniseries melodrama format (her bread and butter, really). There’s still lots of time to see how this one develops, since the casting has been confirmed pretty early in the process; Lightly, Ardently is being planned for a 2016 airdate.

Kim Woo Bins face is seriously jacked up, his fans might drool over him but from an objective viewer he's not remotely good looking. Or talented enough to headline one of this writers shows.

but.. he's not even good looking.. and normally that wouldny be a factor in him being casted IF he had the talent to compensate for the lack of good looks but he doesnt. its a shame considering the previous leads for this writers works. the plot alone sounds like a rip off of every drama cliche most recent being My Love Eundong

Am i missing something, since when did Kim Woo Bin become the God of acting ? He has exactly one type of role, which he's been replaying the past 3 years in all his projects and from the article it seems he's not going for much variation in his role for this drama either. Suzy's bland, but Kim Woo Bins not that far off from being just another model turned actor pretty face going by on just his looks. I'm not too excited about the casting for this drama considering the leads for this writers previous shows, this just feels really miscasted.

Objectively speaking I don't see what's so "charismatic" about this guy. Apart from the height he doesn't have the leading man looks to cut it out as male lead heading a drama. But I guess girls love their bad boys and as long as this guy keeps playing the same role as one, his career will continue to flourish. This drama seems like another heirs in the making, pretty faces with mediocre performances and subpar plot.

Thank you! I'm so confused reading the comments online about this pairing. I won't jump to defend Suzy's acting (we all know she struggles), but did I miss a project where KWB showed any potential as an actor with any range? Especially for a melo, he can't just coast on his dramatic looks and classic intense stares.

This smells like a trainwreck, although I do hope I'm wrong, we all need good dramas :D

(And 20 was mediocre at best, since when is a dudebro movie for teenagers the pinnacle of quality storytelling? Come on, now.)

Exactly. I find it curious that all of a sudden Kim Woo Bins become the pinnacle of great acting when all of his characters so far have been an extension of his role in School 2013. I mean I would understand if it was Kim So Hyun or Lee Jong Suk who have both actually acted as a lead in a drama to some success before, but to be fair to Suzy this is Woo Bin's first role as a male lead in a drama, and Suzy's been leading lady for a while now in more than one show so I don't see where all these fan girls are getting their sense of entitlement from when Kim Woo Bins not much better off than Suzy.

Anyways as it stands the plot seems like a hit or miss, and the plots not much to go on since it sounds so overdone.

Can't believe someone is brave enough to point this out, surprised to see so many think like this! Since White Christmas he plays the ultimate bad boy in dramas, I guess the only exception is To The Beautiful You? I heard he is nice in this one. Liked him in Heirs (first kdrama I watched) but since then I saw other dramas and there are better actors, for sure. Although I don't hate him or anything, he is overrated, probably because of his looks. I guess it happens with all the model-actors from White Christmas. I like them all and the drama is one of my favorites, but they are overrated, for sure.

0

Kim Woo-bin is far from the best actor around and I doubt he can pull off a major melo at this stage in his career, but at least he plays the roles and the type of roles he has, fairly well.

Suzy can barely manage to do more than say her lines even in dramas where the writers tailored her roles to (not entirely successfully) disguise her lack of ability to emote.

But frankly, I've seen enough good castings this year (and enough potentially disastrous castings averted) that I can accept Suzy stinking up this one as 2016's sacrifice to the drama gods.

0

maybe he going to be the male version of Han Ga-In, both started out as models so they seem to fixate on what I guess one could call 'poise' acting. The other guy that comes to mind that uses the same way of acting would be Top of bigbang..stike a poise look smoldering at the camrea..hint, helps to have your eyes done up with eyeliner, black of course.

nah, Suzy is the junior Han Ga-in. Kim Woo-bin, even at his worst, has never had eyes as blank as them.

0

WooBin is a way better actor than TOP

0

I don't know about being 'God' of acting but he IS a decent actor to say the least. You have the right to make constructive criticism but at least try to be fair. You are right that he has mostly played one type of role but it's not the only type.He played a goofy in Twenty and a nerdy in Vampire Idol very convincingly.I understand you feel people are being too harsh on Suzy but attacking KWB is not the right way to counter it.Finding someone attractive depends on individual taste but when it comes to acting,KWB has proved himself to be better actor than Suzy at least so far.But she could surprise us with this new drama.

I don't see how people not being blown away by this guys acting correlates to Suzy. I agreed that both were average at best, I found him alright in Twenty nothing to brag about or sings hymns over. It's astounding how much credit he's being given for pretty much playing the same roles in all of his projects with the exception of two where he was OKAY in, nothing amazing by a long shot.

For his first leading role he should be so lucky to have someone as popular and favoured as Suzy as his leading lady. Neither outshines the other when it comes to acting capabilities to be honest. I don't see why all the fan girls are complaining, at least he didn't get stuck with Jin Se Yeon..

0

If he's nothing amazing acting-wise, then what does that make her?

He is by no means the best actor around and got popular playing bad boys (and looks like he'll be playing one more here, same old), but she got popular for the way she looked in one movie and then milking her image for endorsements. Which are the basis of her popularity now. It's a sad day indeed.....

0

Suzy became popular because of her looks, Cf commercials, and she's lucky enough to get casting offers in good projects. Acting-wise, she's still a bad actress. Kim Woo Bin is decent at most.

0

but he hasn't played the same roles, yes he has played a lot of bad boys but each one had different personalities and his acting differentiated them

0

@Lexie
Yes, at least Kim Woo Bin did not get stuck with Jin Se Yeon or Go Sung-hee. A lot of people say they are the worst actresses....extremely wooden and ridiculously bland.

0

Required fields are marked *

they're both terrible and the fact that they have acting careers is absolute proof that talent is no requirement to be an actress in Korea.

As for Suzy, maybe Ryu Seung-ryung taught her something in the time they spent working on their sageuk movie?

(both that and this sound like her biting off way more than she can chew for the sake of prestige and wanting the filmography of a 'real' actress even without the talent, but her fanbots will think everything she does is brilliant anyway).

0

@pogo
Well said! also, even if Jin se-yeon and Go sung-hee "try to improve" a lot of people STILL think they are bad shitty actresses no matter what. It's like their history of bad acting with haunt them for all time.

0

I agree, he is a decent actor with a lot of potential. So far, all the roles he's been given, he did well in them. In Heirs (that's when he stood out to me), he easily outshone Lee Min Ho - which many would consider a seasoned actor. So he has a lot of potential, and while he is not at the "great actor" stage, he is solidly decent with a lot of potential. In addition he has screen presence, and charisma. The same can't be said for Suzy, acting wise or screen presence wise (and she's already had several chances), sorry.

yups, in Heirs, honestly, Kim Woo Bin outshone LMH. no hate but i just dont like Minho's character. Woobin even with almost the same character in dramas (except movie Twenty), but he could bring something that not many other actors could. it felt like he got possessed by the character.

suzy.. no comment. :D

0

I agree, really. He's not the best actor out there, but he's performed well in his roles.

And at least the guy auditioned for all his roles early on. Unlike Suzy, who has been handed every single acting role she's ever had on a plate and still can't do anything besides look pretty.

If Lee Kyung-hee can't make her act, no one can.

0

As much as I love this writer and her previous works (Thank You, Nice Guy) it's just too bad Kim Woo Bins in my never-watch list. Heirs really tipped the boat for me and no matter how good a show he’s in, I don’t see myself ever giving him another chance. To be fair, I’ve seen almost everything he’s in and never liked him whatsoever. So if anything, I hope neither ends up doing this project because this will be the second show in a row that I’d skip with him in it.

Twenty was such a, I don't wanna say stupid, maybe so-so movie. I think Junho and Lee Yoo-bi were the best things about the movie. Kim Woo-bin was over acting a lot in the moments that required him to be immature. I probably liked Kim Woo-bin best in Vampire Idol, To The Beautiful You and towards the end of Heirs. I hated his character so much for about 18 of the 20 episodes.

0

Lee Yubi was a hoot in that movie. She got some really good lines, but her delivery was pitch-perfect and her chemistry with Junho was adorable.

Certainly did not impress me or stand out for me in Heirs, but that was so bad it would drag anyone down.

For me, even though I agree that "Heirs" was a bad drama, but Kim Woo Bin gave the best performance out of that cast, and he easily outshone Lee Min Ho. Basically, even though the drama was bad, KWB still somehow managed to make his character stand out.

Seems like a copycat of My Love Eundong but with mediocre actors, and if experienced and actually talented actors couldnt sell the plot for MLE i dont see this show working out any better..

dramabeans comments have some serious internalized misogyny, i mean Suzy's not the greatest actress but she was never so bad in any of her roles to warrant this level of criticism and not to mention Kim Woo Bin isnt any gem in the acting department either.

Two. She has been the lead in two dramas. I didn't even really see a huge problem with her acting in Gu Family Book either. It could have been better but she was miles better than how she acted in Dream High.

The way I see it, basically all idol-actors start off the same way. Their first dramas are practically unbearable to watch because they are so new to acting, but get better with each drama they do. Unless they are Yunho, then they are destined to be not good forever.

i'm an ahjumma who does not like k-pop but what you said about Yunho was harsh and slightly ignorant. I was skeptical in the beginning but I can see clearly that he improved a lot and he did a good job as the main leading actor in the new rom-com "I Order You". You don't have to be a fan to see someone's vast improvement.

0

Apparently for idol-actor fans, any criticism of a woman's competence is misogyny.

Suzy is anyway held to such a low standard by her fans, acting-wise, that they'd think she deserved a Daesang just for managing to say her lines correctly.

As for my favorite actress GHJ I really don't want her to be paired up with much more younger actors anymore but maybe in a movie as coworker partners it can be or comical-duel pairing with Lee Hongki ^^
As for this drama In my opinion synopsis is medicore already I really don't get what so good about a real life star acting like star. But if Suzy will be also mediocre character then it is a good thing for KWB to shine more and more ^^

Oh you are right!I almost forgot about that one but Dokko was such a unique character it would be too obvious and most likely backfired. I am not sure KWB can pull off lovable character still based on writer I have a feeling his character won't be cliché two-faced star but rather upright and sincere to fans.

I hope so too, KWB as two-faced is like tell him to walk on runway. If he's upright, dedicated his work to his fans, will be heart breaking to see him cracked knowing that work is the only part of world he learn til now, he skipped his pure childhood, exciting high school, and never know how to live as hot blood youngster.. kya..

The casting for this is giving me really bad Heirs vibes, none of them are that versatile in the acting department and they don't bring anything to the table besides a pretty face and your gonna need much more than that to pull off a show by Lee Kyung Hee.

0

Required fields are marked *

You nailed it. There's definitely an Heirs vibe to this, because this is basically a cash-grab It-Boy/It-Girl casting made for the media buzz and the sponsorship $$$$$ they will both bring in (though acting-wise at least, he brings more to the table - it would be very difficult for anyone to bring less!).

(and the synopsis totally sounds like Sang-doo Let's Go To School+Producer with a dash of Nice Guy's Eun-gi thrown in as the heroine)

Supposedly LKH chose this pairing herself, but honestly, this is the weakest pair of Lee Kyung-hee leads ever., especially considering how demanding her roles can be. If she chose them, I hope she's prepared to write around their deficiencies, especially Suzy's.

She seems like a sweet girl but not the brightest bulb in the box, there's just a seeming lack of depth to her that doesn't bode well for any kind of melo acting.

My thoughts exactly. Lee Kyung-hee dramas are not perfect, but they've generally got strong scripts that demand a lot of their actors, rather than 'writing down' to accommodate limited talent.

And when you consider that her last primetime drama leads were Song Joong-ki and Moon Chae-won......the difference in levels between these two pairings is pretty stark. And I say that even as a fan of Woobin.

And frankly it is not them we worry about, it's the young and far more talented actresses who work like cows as someone said, and don't even get 1 percent of the opportunity she does.

Why do people forget Kang Dong Won? He was a model turned actor

0

Ahn Jae Hyun and Sung Joon both got dragged hard for lacking acting skills, knets and inets both.

And even then, every one of the model-line actors worked their way up for years by taking small roles and supporting roles or smaller projects. People complained when Ahn Jae Hyun got a lead role for only his third acting project. Kim Woo Bin only did a movie lead for the first time last year and this will be his first drama lead.

0

+ Kang Dong Won, Cha Seung Won.
Both are great. Talent speaks for itself. Tbh, newer generations of model-turned-actors haven't lived up to their seniors.

0

@Daehoney

Do you think these predecessors started out as good and polished actor? It took time and experience. I gotta laugh when people make these type of comparisons across generations.

Adding to the list, So Jisub and Jo Insung were also models-turned-actors. Go watch all the earlier work of the people listed in this thread.

0

Jo In-sung, So Ji-sub, Kang Dong-won et al started off in supporting roles and smaller sitcoms, and did not have their agencies jumping to hand them lead roles in dramas or movies at the very start of their career when they still sucked at acting.

The same goes for the female model-turned actresses as well.

0

@pogo

...Was that directed at me? Because I never negated that. I was replying to this "newer generations of model-turned-actors haven’t lived up to their seniors" statement and I was pointing out how it's silly to compare the newer generation that's just starting out to their seniors who have had years of experience, as if they didn't start out mediocre/bad too.

0

@pogo Also, The current model-turned-actors didn't start at lead roles either and had to work their way up so I don't get your point, I'm really trying here.

I feel like maybe you're letting nostalgia cloud your judgement a bit? These seniors weren't that good in their earlier lead roles either, those were actually kinda hard to watch.

0

You are lying. There is a lot of model turned actors who got it easy compared to rookie actors. Most worshipped actors were models.

they may be lacking in skill but they are not getting rewarded to the extent that Suzy is for having no real acting talent. Hm what? How is she being rewarded? For what I know if the public wants her, the dramas casting will come, it isn't her fault.

The public likes her, she gots the work. She has so many CFS, sher has no time to sleep properly or rest. She is working hard and everybody who works with her compliments her.

try and watch your tone, dear. You really going to the extent of calling fellow commenters liars because I criticise the talent of some idol you don't even know irl?

And which of the model line actor had it easy? They worked for years in several small and supporting roles before getting leads, unlike idols whose companies just get them lead roles in public broadcast. The only one who did get a lead role after 2 projects was Ahn Jae Hyun and he got dragged as bad as any idol forhis poor acting and lack of experience. Even Lee Jong Suk only started getting lead roles in 2013, this will be Kim Woo Bin first drama lead. Sung Joon only got lead roles on cable, same with Kim Young Kwang (SJ only got lead role in High Society and was dragged by nets and inets for lacking acting skill -- on public broadcast that is)

And even the older model actors like Kang Dong Won and Lee Jun Ki, all had to come up through supporting roles and smaller projects like sitcoms first. So stop with this myth that they had some easy ride. More than one of them - including Woobin - has talked about starving as rookies , but you still want to behave like Suzy is the only one who works hard? Talented actresses work hard too, to develop some skill other than shooting endless cfs.

0

Are you joking? Idols train for years, and only a select few get to headline dramas while most of them are supporting cast at best. In fact, most idol-leads dramas are terrible flops (see TTBY, Dream High 2, Heartstrings).

Suzy, for some reason had a huge breakout role in Architecture 101 (I disliked the movie but Korean audiences loved it, so it's the only thing that matters), and she was rewarded with overwhelming public recognition and lots of opportunities. She was even part of the cast of one of the rare dramas with heavy idol characters that was a success, Dream High 1 (even though we could say KSH was a big part of that success too). What's the big deal about CFs? Are we going to ignore that KWB has been shooting endless CFs all these years too? Or attending meaningless, embarrassing fanmeetings? Both had acting roles before, both filmed countless CFs, both struggle at acting, both got an easy ride leading this show after showing 0 potential as leads in all their past projects... so why the double standards?

I don't even know why I'm defending Suzy when I don't care about her acting or idol activities at all, and I share everyone's concern about her ability to lead a melo romance. However, this extreme deification on KWB when he's literally playing the same role he's played in 95% of his projects, and relying on his strong screen presence while failing at everything from technique to range to basic emoting, is puzzling and a little embarrassing to witness. Finding his looks charming, or liking him for whatever personality he shows off screen is cool, I won't judge at all (we all have our oppas we will defend), but claiming he has shown any potential to garner this support is reaching at best.

0

@gd - her lack of talent is rather more spectacular than his - even if he has been doing the cheesy cfs and fanmeetings, he had something to back it up with. While she is just known for milking her image from that movie for endorsements and more endorsements, to the point where she's basically a product endorser and very little else.

He plays one kind of role, sure, but he plays it at least decently and has done it across multiple projects. In her case, experienced writers tie themselves in knots to accommodate her painful lack of acting ability because of the advertisement money she brings in - his level of acting ability may be low, but she isn't even close to matching it.

0

idols train for years, right? At what? Judging by the amount of lip-sync I see on kpop performances, it certainly isn't singing.

And the ones who are actually talented at acting often get passed over for opportunities which are handed on platters to someone else for being prettier/more popular, never mind if they can act or not.

Some system.

0

Pogo, you criticized korean star as of you know what's really going on behind the scenes. as if you've seen first hand who's being disregarded and who had it easy.

News flash: Suzy is loved by koreans it's all that matters. She's bankable that's why she can choose projects. PD's are dying to have her because she's famous. With or without acting talent. After all, these people are only after ratings and the monetary value that comes with it.

They don't care about international audience's opinion. so if you don't like her don't watch her.

0

@endz - the opinion that her 'acting' is bottom of the barrel is hardly exclusive to international audiences, judging by the amount of criticism levelled at her by Korean viewers themselves.

You said it yourself, she gets offered acting roles because she has endorsements, not acting ability.

0

There are quite a few model-turned-actor-leads on the women's side. Lee Bo-young, Gong Hyo-jin, Kim Ah-joong, to name a few of the well-established ones. And those are pretty huge names too ...

.....all of whom started out in supporting roles and smaller roles/lower-profile projects first before working their way up to lead.

Han Ga-in is a much better example of a model-turned actress who never showed so much as a shred of talent but kept getting roles anyway (rumoured to be because her family has a lot of influence in the entertainment business). And Kim Tae-hee leveraged her Seoul University student status to legitimise public perception of herself despite her own poor acting.

0

And what make you think that Suzy doesn't work as hard as any other actress who "work like cows"? She may not display exceptional acting skill but that doesn't mean she's placing no effort at all into acting and suddenly getting offers at her feet.

She's also well liked by the Korean public so "shooting endless cfs" (which i think would be one of the many ways one can improve in acting) and getting offers for roles is expected, I guess. It's not like she holding the directors/higher-up staff hostage and demanding them to give her roles in movies/dramas since in the end it's their choice who they offer these roles to.

Anyways this drama sure will be candy for the eyes but plot-wise i'm not so sure...

I still fail to see how holding up a product and smiling at a camera, or dolling up for a commercial, is a way to 'improve in acting'.

I'm sure she's very good at smiling and looking pretty, but unfortunately, acting in dramas and movies involves more than that.

And frankly, she may not be holding anyone at gunpoint for roles but she uses her star status to accept acting roles she point blank lacks the ability to do - people praise her for being hard-working and nice and pretty and 'having a good impression', but tellingly, I never see any comments about her actual acting. It's just the elephant in the room drama writers and PDs seem to ignore because they want advertisements for their drama, quality be damned.

0

as much as i like him goodness gracious i agree. every time i see a post with an actor/actress there's so much hate towards the actress (to she looks like a doll i.e. too much PS to she's too old or can't act. anything) which is why i didn't really want to post my comment.

KWB has one 'type' of role but at least he does that well. He can pull off emotional acting too.

But Suzy......in a Lee Kyung Hee drama.....it's like dumping a pot of salt on top of a dessert. Even Park Shin Hye would have been a better choice and they would still get lots of sponsorship.

She's not perfect, but at least she's not devoid of expression.

joking aside, i agree that suzy is totally underwhelming as an actress, but idk. for some reason i've always really liked park shin-hye, but she honestly isn't much better than suzy... and idk, i've always felt that suzy is much more popular in korea than PSH

Ugh anything but Park Shin Hye. She's right up there with all the idol star actresses, but worse cause she's been acting the same role for years with little to no improvement in her performance and still manages to get lead roles over far superior actresses who San actually act.

In terms of acting, one has room for improvements, the other is on a continuous slide - down, from already average performance to begin with. Whom do I choose to watch? The one that I feel comfortable watching. And that would be Suzy. I suspect I'll have convulsions watching PSH in another drama.

i actually prefer a real actors and actress to be lead in a drama. the trend for idols to become actor is actually no good. i'm okey if they are supporting characters. so few idols who are actually talented and can become a good actor. for eg Soo Young of SNSD, im actually like her acting so much in My Spring Days. Park Yoo Chun also talented and has proved his ability.

0

Yoochun's headed to the army at the end of this month, hence I'd think he won't want to take this up since he won't be able to commit, sadly.

0

Go Ah-sung was so perfect in Heard It Through the Grapevine, it makes me almost sad she's gone back to Chungmuro and probably won't do another drama for another five years.

omg, this drama is gonna bring in soooooo much buzz & will most likely be popular because of the KWB&suzy pairing.

honestly, i see KWB acting circles around suzy (he's so much more charismatic and can emote way better) BUT i'm not hating this pairing. both have not been on the small screen for a long time and i think they chose a really good project as their comebacks.

essentially, i'm not hating this casting news cuz while i love KWB, i don't hate suzy so i'll follow and watch this drama if it isn't horrible. plus neither have been jumping from drama to drama (ahem, shin se kyung, jin se yeon, etc.) and STILL not shown acting improvement so i am hopeful.

i'm not hating the writer as well (nice guy remains my fav kdrama) so i have faith in her to direct both actors well. overall, i'm looking forward to this, yay!

Because of his face, he always get "arrongat, cock" kind of characetsr to play. He is decent enough, but not that good at acting like some are claiming here. Or did I miss something? There is some movie I didn't see ?

First I thought the same than you. This guy is just gorgeous in cocky, bad, sarcastic, frightening or sensitive, vulnerable roles because of his eyes, his face and nothing more. But now I realized that he is versatile actor.
If only he would get more hilarious roles (not melodramatic than in school 2013 or heirs). But I'm happy that finally he get the lead (he deserves after a lot of second lead or side characters)

however, she is not a great actress. i am a big fan of his and i believe he is talented (has needed several roles to get his acting better and warmer.) however, this would be so much better suited for a rom-com. you don't just bring two people together because it looks good and not think about what kind of setting this should be in. a melo with her acting? frustrating because she's good at the slapstick over the top shit. i am disappointed but i will see since i am a huge fan of his lol.

don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they can't act .. if it was a rom-com I'd have no doubt they can handle it. But for a melodrama and by someone who wrote Nice Guy we need more experienced actors.
