The sun sets on nighttime errand doctor Yong-pal
by javabeans
I have to say, Yong-pal has some clever designers working on its promos, with posters that are a lot more interesting than the standard cast four-shot. When so many shows in dramaland boast similar (sometimes nearly interchangeable) posters, I’m always happy to get something a little different.
The drama’s first poster trapped “Sleeping Beauty” heroine Kim Tae-hee in a scalpel and formed Joo-won’s silhouette out of letters (the drama’s credits), which had a cool effect. This new poster blends the two into the backdrop of the city, lit by the setting sun—no doubt a reference to the hero’s nighttime exploits as a doc for hire to the rich and shady.
Below we have a few photos taken from the drama’s teaser shoot, which you probably already recognize from Kim Tae-hee’s billowy clothing and wire harness, which was used to suspend them in air. (I always find it a little startling how Joo-won looks like a baby when he’s being himself behind the scenes or in interviews, and then transforms the minute he’s acting in character, like he flipped a switch. It’s impressive and a little jarring.)
At bottom, we have some shots of Chae Jung-ahn, who plays Kim Tae-hee’s sister-in-law, with whom she’ll clash. She’s married to Jo Hyun-jae, the half-brother to Kim Tae-hee who’s got a hand in keeping her comatose following an accident. Given that Joo-won’s character is described as witnessing all manner of dark and makjang goings-on in his wealthy clientele’s homes, I’m thinking rich people are nuts will be a recurring theme. Remember when rich people in dramas were symbols of wish fulfillment, like the sweet Prince Charmings who swept up Cinderella heroines, and not all harboring terrible traumas, personality defects, or rogue personalities? Ah, the halcyon days of 2000.
Yong-pal premieres on August 5 on SBS.

i quite like that since some of (over)-hype-drama before turn out to be terrible and disappointing.. so it probably much better they stay low-key but then give such outstanding drama.. even not really sure about KTH's acting can match up with Joowoon's.. hopefully she will..

I just noticed that Good Doctor premiered also on 5th August. So it has been two years apart between Park Shi On (1st year resident) and Kim Tae Hyun (3rd year resident).
Maybe there was some intents behind all of this. If you know what I mean :D

Too early to judge the chemistry. Maybe because we already have the mindset that the actress has a real-life boyfriend, so some dont see the chemistry. I feel like that if i know the actor/actress is married or has a partner.
Anyway, i love Joowon's projects coz of his acting. I hope there's not much love-line and instead focus on the backstory of Taehyun's purpose and struggles as Yongpal, and how they helped each other in revenge and discrete plans.

What has an actor's relationship status got to do with their work, i. e. their on screen chemistry with other actors? I don't get it. It is first and foremost the casting director's task to pair actors adequately, but if it's not a viable option (i. e. you recruit two big names foregoing the audition process) it is literally in the chosen actors' job description to work on the chemistry or fail at acting. A terrible script or incompetent direction can also ruin even the best efforts of the performers. Certainly, terrible damp squids happen, but that's life for you.
Obviously, everyone perceives chemistry differently, for some it works, for some it doesn't. The actors' private lives shouldn't even come up in the discussion regarding this subject. That's why I'm often creeped out when some people ship actors who manage to create a blazing on screen chemistry, but remain firmly platonic in real life. They are NOT fictional characters, but living and breathing human beings who are just doing their job.
Rant over. It's way to early to judge the chemistry between Kim Tae Hee and Joo Won. They're not starring in a comic book, but a live action drama, so they should be judged only after they've been seen in said action.

to each his own. i mentioned that that's how I feel about it. every time i see other partnered actors/actress project, i dont feel the sincerity in the love-line for their drama. i feel it's just actors/actresses acting to be in love. some managed to make me feel like they're really in love, but most made me feel otherwise. and i also mentioned that it's too early to judge their chemistry. but i hope their love-line doesnt seem too much like acting.
i dont really like Joowon's love story. which is why i hope the drama will focus more on other aspects as opposed to his love-story. if it does, i hope he does it convincingly. i havent watched any of Kim Taehee's project, so i dont know her acting levels yet.
wont make any judgement until the drama airs a few episodes.

The real question is, is it really their being in a relationship/married that makes you not feel the sincerity of their chemistry, or would you feel the same way even if you didn't know their relationship status?
Because Jun Ji-hyun has been married for the last three years and Jo Jong-seok is in a relationship with someone, and I will laugh in the face of anyone who tries to tell me they didn't have good chemistry with Kim Soo-hyun in YFAS or Park Bo-young in Oh My Ghostess, respectively.

Totally agree with Hana...joowoon, when an actor/actress is married and has a boyfriend...the following happens..
The kiss is usually fake and the shots are. manipulated to make it look real and the camera pans out....( this is truly dishonest, as an actor you must be true to your craft) so if the script calls for a kiss....kiss honestly!
Second the
Skin ship is always awkward and fleeting and you can tell that they are acting.....
Third....uncomfortableand awkward...
I think the only one who could do this well even when I know that he is a devoted family man is Jang Hyuk......

"the actress has a real-life boyfriend, so some dont see the chemistry. I feel like that if i know the actor/actress is married or has a partner."
I would REALLY like to know if this is applicable to Ji Sung (married for two years to Lee Bo-young) or Hwang Jung-eum (had a longtime bf for several years while working on Secret and Kill Me Heal Me) for either of their two dramas.
Or to Lee Bo-young in I Hear Your Voice, Gong Hyo-jin and Cha Seung-won in Best Love, Jang Hyuk in Fated to Love You, Kim Woo-bin in Heirs, Han Groo in Marriage not Dating, Joo Ji-hoon in Mask, Cha Tae-hyun in Producer, Lee Jin-wook in Three Musketeers.......are we really to believe that all these people didn't show good chemistry in their roles just because they were married/in relationships at the time?

I think it has to with the fact that a lot of viewers love to ship the main leads in real life, so when they're not single, people get turned off and that affects their judgement on the fictional characters. It's pathetic, but this is how it rolls in most "fandoms". Most talk about chemistry and the physical appearance of the actors should be taken with a grain of salt really.

Yeah, so many complains about the chemistry of this couple (kim tae hee x joo won) (because kim tae hee already have her own couple in her real life LOL). For me, the chemistry is not the important point for thus drama, the important thing is how the writer makes the story of this drama. Hope the writer can make a good storyline as good as 'Mask' or maybe better

Having a relationship with someone in real life should never have anything to do with on screen chemistry. There are some who's married, like Ji Sung who always have a great chemistry with his co stars. For instance, twice with Hwang Jung Eum (and she has a boyfriend i think).

Yeah, this is one thing that's always bothered me about kdrama fandom. That people are like, oh no, I don't want him with that character because I ship the actor with this actress in real life.
Real life is one thing, you wanna ship a pair of actors, ship them but these are characters on a tv show and it has nothing to do with who these people who portray them are in real life.

yea...I could care less for romantic chemistry. Most of my favorite dramas had no romance and I wish this drama, unless it can use it to its advantage, will leave it out. Otherwise, I'll just ignore it as I did for Heartless City.
Never gets old seeing "nighttime errand". I am in need of a good suspense drama so hopefully, this one will deliver. Otherwise, I'll be tuning in just to watch Joo Won knock it out of the park once again.

if I had to come up with an interpretation for it, well, they have to show the main characters, so that's okay. And as an errand doctor, Yong Pal probably wonders through town a lot, so maybe that's why they'd show the city. And as sunset is the time between day and night, and Yong Pal seems to lead two different lives with a daytime job at the hospital and his nighttime skint as a mob doctor, showing the sunset over a divided city is probably a way of portraying that duality. The two leads facing away from each other coud mean they don't know each other and are leading opposite lives.
or maybe it just looked pretty, idk.

Hmm not so sure about this... ? mainly because when so much effort is put into posters, promos and stills.. It's almost always a percursor of something else lacking in a drama. Not being a doomsayer but I have seen cases where the stills raise our hopes and then the drama just doesn't live up to the hype. I hope I'm wrong!
I love Joo Won and I'm getting a 'Sensory Couple' vibe. Yoo Chun practically saved that drama with his character portrayal that was very tongue-in-cheek. So long as Joo-won doesn't go too hardcore intense with this role, I think he'll do fine!!

And for those of you who keep saying "I can't see the chemistry", you guys haven't even given them a chance yet. Maybe you guys can start judging after the first few episodes. However, to judge them solely on what you've seen so far, which haven't had much scenes of the two main characters together, is quite shallow, tbh.
Just my two cents.

I am watching this drama for Kim Tae Hee. I had been waiting for her comeback after jang ok jung. As an outsider (non Korean), her's was the first face that I could recognize and I had followed her dramas since love story in Harvard. It amazes me that people still do not give her due credit for how much she has matured as an actress. As a fan, as a follower of her career, I am confident that she will give her best performance in this drama! ( We loved her in my princess; she surprised us in Jang Ok jung- but people still define her by her early performances! :( )
Anyway, the teasers are brilliantly shot and I really hope the plot doesn't dissappoint us! Not actors but the writer and director scare me ! Enjoy the show! ?
