Oh My Ghostess: Episode 7

I love it I love it I love it. I was thoroughly enjoying this show already, but today’s episode takes everything to that perfect place—perfect in its balance of funny and heartfelt, heightening of stakes, growth of feelings, and approach to the conflict. As much as I loved the characters and feeling behind the show, there were little sticking points that kept niggling at me (mostly about the ghost-possession), which I mentioned in previous recaps. But I’m happy to report that with this week, I’ve hit that point where I’m ready to throw myself into the show fully and trust that it’s going to good narrative places.

EPISODE 7 RECAP

The medium unni tracks down Soon-ae in Bong-sun’s body, and Soon-ae runs for it. She somehow runs out of the body and her spirit self leaps into a passing bus, leaving Bong-sun confused to find herself in the middle of a sidewalk.

She runs into Sun-woo, though, who’s here to meet her for their not-quite-date and mock-scolds her for making him wait. She stammers an “I’m sorry,” which makes him note that Depressed Bong-sun is back, and she goes with that explanation.

Since the last thing Bong-sun remembers was the cooking show, she asks how the spilled flour problem worked out. Sun-woo thinks she’s angling for praise at how well she fixed things, and throws in some cooking tips while he’s at it. Then he instructs her to look up directions to the restaurant on her phone, and she’s startled to see that her wallpaper has been changed to the cozy selfie she took with him.

Soon-ae disembarks from the bus and looks around carefully for signs of the medium. She relaxes just as the medium swoops in from behind and grabs her, looking like a crazy person to the rest of the bystanders who can’t see the ghost she’s dragging.

At the restaurant, Sun-woo tells Bong-sun that food is like music and art—it’s about more than just eating. He has her taste the food and teaches her about various properties of ingredients, and she takes in his tips attentively.

As they leave, Bong-sun stumbles and he tells her to build up her endurance, chiding her for shrinking back and giving off the impression that she’s weak. It’s why the other cooks call her “Bong,” which is on one hand a simple shortening of her name, but on the other hand another word for a pushover. He tells her to speak up more and not let them get away with that… and then tosses out, “Let’s go, Bong.” She double-takes, and he quips, “It’s okay for me. Only me.”

Bong-sun pauses to watch a street musician singing and playing guitar, enjoying the song. Sun-woo grumps that it’s no big deal and calls her away, though she’s loath to leave, lingering to hear more.

The medium unni takes Soon-ae back home, binding her with some kind of spiritual rope, ignoring Soon-ae’s whining for freedom. Soon-ae insists she’s on the verge of resolving her lingering grudge, so all unni has to do is let her do the last step. Unni perks up to hear that Soon-ae has found a man whose yang energy can withstand her yin, but when she hears who it is, she puts her foot down. No way, no how.

Her argument is that Sun-woo’s mother is her client and friend, but Soon-ae guesses it’s more that she’s taken lots of Mom’s money. She’s not moved by that argument, but Unni grows serious and offers to send Soon-ae onward with a spiritual rite that will move her forward to her heavenly afterlife.

But Soon-ae tenses up in fear at the mention of those rites, having heard how painful they are—they supposedly cause pain that feels like your skin is being ripped apart. Unni says it’s only for a moment, but Soon-ae refuses.

Sun-woo and Bong-sun arrive back at the restaurant, and she bids him a good night. He says he’s not sure if that’s possible since she might switch to her manic side and pounce on him, though really, at this point I think he’d be disappointed if she didn’t.

The screen splits as they head into their respective rooms, and the first thing Sun-woo does is reach for his guitar. Ha! I knew we couldn’t have a Jo Jung-seok drama without a serenade of some sort. He starts playing, acting like it’s not a big deal while totally showing off for his audience on the other side of the wall, and starts to sing. (The song is titled “Sweet Chocolate,” and was written by Jo Jung-seok himself.)

Bong-sun perks up to hear him, moving close to the wall to listen better, totally impressed.

In the morning, Sun-woo wakes her up early insisting on starting an exercise regimen. You know, for her health and cooking endurance, like a good teacher would do. Suuure.

But he’s agog to hear that she never learned how to ride a bicycle, and it’s hilarious how he finds every opportunity to show off, literally riding his bike in circles in front of her. Doubly hilarious is how his bragging would impress nobody else, but lucky for him that it works on her.

Sun-woo proceeds to teach her how to ride, though not successfully, and ends up with a sore arm when she starts to fall and he leaps forward to break her impact.

Stopping at the vending machines for a drink, Sun-woo’s just a bit short to buy two cans. He feels under the machine and comes up with one coin, but they’re still short, and as he’s suggesting they split one can, Bong-sun fiddles with the coin return knob and finds what they need. And of course, Sun-woo finds a way to make this his doing: “Well, when the teacher is quick, so is the student.”

They return to their parked bikes just in time to see a thief making off with one of the seats, and Sun-woo runs after him, chasing him through the neighborhood. Bong-sun runs too but fades quicker, and goes in the other direction to intercept the thief from the other side. She clings madly to the thief’s leg, wailing, “I’m sorry! I’m really sorry!” He yelps, “If you’re sorry, let go!”

But instead, Bong-sun chomps down on his calf, just long enough for Sun-woo to catch up.

They hand over the culprit to the police, who have been after him for a while for a number of neighborhood thefts. I love how proud Sun-woo is of Bong-sun as he explains to Officer Sung-jae how she caught the guy, while she protests modestly that she only bit him a little.

As Sun-woo and Bong-sun head off together, Sung-jae and his partner wonder at how surprisingly friendly the fussy chef is with his employee—it’s certainly new behavior for Sun-woo.

Sun-woo invites Bong-sun to eat some of his favorite cake with him, and she shyly accepts. He looks down at her fondly and notes that she’s smiling a lot today and how much better that is than constantly shrinking back. “I really like today’s Na Bong-sun,” he declares, making her feel even giddier as he ruffles her hair affectionately.

That’s when So-hyung arrives, awkwardly noticing that he’s eating the same cake she brought for him. Sun-woo explains about Bong-sun’s living situation, and explains so thoroughly that she says it sounds like he’s making excuses. She teases that he’s usually not like this.

Still, to others it looks like Sun-woo and So-hyung are the two flirting with romance, and when his assistants arrive for work, they immediately make excuses to leave them to some privacy, not really buying the couple’s protests that they’re not together.

Medium Unni insists on performing that rite to send Soon-ae on to the next realm, grimly dragging her along while Soon-ae begs to be allowed to do things her way. She’s legitimately terrified and on the verge of tears, but Unni reminds her of the consequences of failing to resolve her grudge—she only has a few months left before she hits the third year anniversary of her death, and becomes a malevolent ghost.

Unni begins the ceremony, chanting in front of an altar where Soon-ae sits, bound by ropes, wailing that she doesn’t want to go this way. She gets so worked up that for a brief flash, black wisps start to emanate from her body, and that pent-up force sends parts of the altar flying. Then the black cloud dissipates and Soon-ae returns to normal.

Seeing Sun-woo so cozy with his assistant weighs on So-hyung’s mind, so when her flirty married sunbae suggests setting her up on a date, she considers it. She’s not inclined to go but isn’t very convincing when she says it’s not because of Sun-woo, who’s just a friend.

At the restaurant, sous chef Min-soo is being his usual pushy self with the other assistants, pressuring them to go drinking after work, and accidentally nicks his knife. Worse yet, he hadn’t realized he’d been using Sun-woo’s knife, and they all know how much he hates that.

So Min-soo madly sharpens the blade before Sun-woo gets there, preferring to be on the hook for that minor offense rather than the bigger one of damaging it.

So-hyung calls Sun-woo under the pretense of talking about the cooking show, then brings up the potential blind date, asking if she should agree or not. Sun-woo hesitates before saying she should do it, and she’s disappointed with his answer.

Soon-ae’s outburst during the rites caused something to scratch Unni’s face, and she apologizes contritely for getting too worked up. But Unni has bigger concerns, having identified that black smoke as Soon-ae’s malevolent energy. It’s starting to grow within her as her deadline approaches, and when she got upset it flared out of control.

That night, Sun-woo gives Bong-sun another cooking lesson, this time with salts and seasonings. When he pats her head, Bong-sun smiles to herself, while Sun-woo smiles to himself as he watches her working her way through the tastings. They are freaking adorable, in the way it makes them so obviously happy to be in each other’s presence. Then he caps off the lesson with a cup of tea to soothe her taste buds, and the thoughtfulness gives her another thrill of pleasure.

As she leaves the restaurant, Officer Sung-jae comes by and offers to buy a late snack. She starts to decline politely, but he overrides her with friendly insistence, telling her where to meet him.

With Bong-sun back in her body, Soon-ae’s family wonders why they haven’t seen her around lately. It’s mostly little bro Kyung-mo who’s cranky at her lack of response to his calls and texts, which Dad laughs about since it’s obvious Kyung-mo wants to see her. But they’re both bewildered when Bong-sun walks right by them without noticing, and when Kyung-mo stops her, she just says, “I think you have the wrong person.”

Kyung-mo finds her behavior insulting, sure that she’s acting. Even Dad is confused, wondering at the drastic change.

Bong-sun and Sung-jae sit down at a pojangmacha, and he notes that she seems different every time he sees her. She gives a vague explanation about being moody, and he prods a little before backing off and saying that he’s just worried about her, because there was something in her vibe that one dawn when he’d run into her—she seemed on the verge.

“I’ve experienced that moment in my life a few times too,” he explains. Something in his manner gets Bong-sun to start confiding, but she cuts herself off.

At home, Sun-woo listens for sounds of Bong-sun through their shared wall, wondering why it’s so quiet. Then Mom calls saying that she’s sick, so the next morning Sun-woo drops by her house… where he finds her hearty and hale, of course, since she just lied to get him to come over for family time.

Sun-woo practically rolls his eyes when Mom starts in on all the spiritual warnings again, telling him to beware of water this year. She wonders if he’s wearing the talisman underwear she bought him (LOL), and starts fishing around his waistband to check for herself. Sun-woo fends her off, and she exclaims, “If that’s so unfair, you can see mine too.” Sun-woo: “NO!” And then Mom literally chases him around the living room and over couches.

Soon-ae is understandably dismayed at the signs of her impending future as a malevolent ghost, and tells Unni that she’s scared. While Unni rummages around her kitchen, Soon-ae glances at the door, seeing her opening to escape. But this time, Unni doesn’t go after her, feeling overcome with pity for Soon-ae’s fate and wishing for her to solve her grudge soon.

Dinner service at the restaurant is a muted affair, with Sun-woo in a withdrawn mood. When the camera pulls out, we understand why: So-hyung is here with her blind date. The staff wonders at it, having been convinced she was in some kind of relationship with Sun-woo.

So-hyung finds Sun-woo to ask what he thinks of her date, hoping for some kind of reaction. Bong-sun hangs back, overhearing as Sun-woo finds positive things to say about the guy and suggests that she keep dating him if she likes him.

But So-hyung’s disappointed at the reply, asking if he really feels nothing to see her on the date. She even admits that it upsets her—because it means she’s alone in being bothered by it. Okay, finally a straight word out of one of them, even if Sun-woo doesn’t do anything with it. But So-hyung does cut her date short, knowing she’s not interested in pursuing something.

After slipping away from Unni, Soon-ae heads back to the restaurant, telling herself she can solve her problem her own way. She bounds up to Bong-sun, who yelps in alarm and tries to avoid her, to no avail—Soon-ae keeps hounding her, sorta asking for permission to possess her and sorta diving for the body anyway.

She tells Bong-sun how important this is and how she has very little time and needs to avoid turning into a bad ghost, but every time she lurches for the body, Bong-sun skitters away.

In her hurry to evade the ghost, Bong-sun knocks into her desk and causes a notebook to fall, and Soon-ae sees the clippings that fall out—they’re all about Sun-woo. The ensuing exchange is hilarious, as Bong-sun clocks Soon-ae’s interest:

Bong-sun: “It’s not!”
Soon-ae: “What’s not?”
Bong-sun “…everything! It’s just not.”
Soon-ae:It is? REALLY?”

But it makes sense for Soon-ae, who now appeals to Bong-sun to make a deal. Bong-sun listens warily as Soon-ae argues a pretty decent case for possessing her body: She’ll make the chef Bong-sun’s man, and seduce him for her. Bong-sun isn’t going to be able to make progress on her own, but Soon-ae is totally fine being pushy and making all the advances. In the end, Bong-sun will win Sun-woo over, and Soon-ae will get to resolve her grudge. She adds that Bong-sun could lose the chef to So-hyung if she doesn’t do anything.

Bong-sun seems to find this tempting, but she shakes it aside firmly, saying she doesn’t want Sun-woo that way. Soon-ae complains that she’s way too conservative, but doesn’t keep chasing her.

Instead, she finds her father out for a walk and accompanies him up the hill, though of course he can’t see her, or hear her wondering about her fate.

The cooking lesson tonight involves knife skills, and Sun-woo corrects Bong-sun’s grip and shows her how to trim tomatoes properly. He has her hold his hand as he goes through the motion, and she thrills at the touch, holding her hand close afterward.

Sun-woo finds So-hyung outside the restaurant, swaying drunkenly. She admits she drank alone because she was feeling peeved, and asks again if he truly feels nothing to see her with another man. She even admits, “Watching you with your nobody assistant makes me jealous.”

They don’t see that the front door opens, and Bong-sun overhears as So-hyung wonders why she’s feeling this way all of a sudden, and asks Sun-woo if she was really only a friend to him. Then she kisses him impulsively, though she’s immediately mortified. Sun-woo’s stunned, and Bong-sun whirls back inside in shock.

Meanwhile, Soon-ae drinks funeral liquor with her ghost friend, sighing over her predicament. The friend urges her to just go for it and seduce Sun-woo, but Soon-ae doesn’t see a way to do it when she can’t possess the woman he likes, and the woman she can possess won’t allow her.

Soon-ae wonders if she may have to give up, sighing that she really did want to try “it” once: “The thing that’s so easy for others, why is it so hard for me?” Her friend suggests that she go through with that passing rite, which is better than turning into a bad ghost, although they both wince to think of the excruciating pain involved.

Reeling from the kiss she witnessed, Bong-sun thinks back to all her encounters with him, like his lessons in cooking and his serenade. Finally it prompts a decision, and she gets up with determination, looking for Soon-ae.

She can’t find her in the restaurant, so she heads out into the neighborhood (cutely yelling, “Hey, Ghost!”) until she comes across her in the street. Soon-ae makes a few digs at Bong-sun for being a conservative stick-in-the-mud, but Bong-sun looks her in the eye and says decisively, “I’ll allow it. I’ll let you come into my body.”

Soon-ae’s eyes widen, and Bong-sun asks, “Make Chef-nim mine.”

COMMENTS

Yesss, they make a deal! It’s what I wanted from the outset, though it makes sense that Bong-sun needed time (and the proper impetus) to make her amenable to the idea. We needed to advance the developments between her and Sun-woo enough, so that she feels a relationship may be within her reach after all. By now she’s had enough encouragement from him that rather than shrinking back and keeping all the feelings bottled inside in silence, as was her wont, she’s willing to go for it.

The irony, of course, is that Sun-woo’s already halfway in love with her and Bong-sun doesn’t expressly need Soon-ae’s help—their rapport in today’s episode felt so sweet and natural that one could imagine life taking its course and leading them together eventually. It might take longer that way, but I could certainly believe they’re well on their way.

But that’s the kind of dramatic irony that enhances this situation for us, since we know things they don’t know about themselves and have to just sit back and watch them take the long way around. Sometimes being the omniscient viewer is just frustrating, but sometimes that frustration is part of the eventual payoff. I much prefer when it’s the latter, and I’m glad that Oh My Ghostess lets me enjoy the tease.

I’m relieved that we’re starting to see more of Bong-sun’s true personality peeking out, the one that was buried under layers of stress and fear. It’s a little like she was living in a permanent state of PTSD that kept her personality stuck behind a wall of defense, and now the fear has been relaxed and she’s emerging from her bunker. It feels like watching someone wake from a stupor, proving that there’s more to her than everyone could see before. It’s gratifying to see her enjoying herself, even showing flashes of sass. How much did I die laughing when she kept apologizing while she was chasing the thief, and then bit his leg? And Sun-woo’s proud reaction to her gumption was just the cherry on top.

Soon-ae does have a point in that she’s the impetus behind all this recent progress, because while she didn’t create Bong-sun’s and Sun-woo’s interest in each other out of thin air, it’s probable they wouldn’t have sparked without her actions. I’m still not sure how you’d parse Sun-woo’s interest in Bong-sun—exactly what percentage is Bong-sun, and how much is Soon-ae?—but the beauty of today’s episode is that it’s no longer a pivotal question. At least for me, because seeing Bong-sun for herself only feeds his interest. I loved his line about how he really likes her today, because she needs to know (okay, I need to know) that his affection isn’t based entirely on false assumptions.

One crucial point about this deal between ghost and host is that Soon-ae’s showing greater respect for the body, and I really love that. I didn’t mind that she hijacked bodies before, because I had faith that she’d grow and become more aware and respectful of the host, and she didn’t fail us. Even while she was chasing Bong-sun around half-asking, half-demanding her body, she backed off when Bong-sun gave her a final decision. She was even ready to give up her whole mission because she accepted Bong-sun’s answer, and wasn’t going to override it anyway.

Because the show put the decision to be possessed into Bong-sun’s hands, now I can face the rest of the show without qualms, without feeling uneasy about the drama steamrollering right over the issue of a person’s agency. The best ghost-possession dramas make it a point to address that issue, and to allow agency for all souls involved, which is really the most (only?) satisfactory way to go. (See also: Who Are You, the Yoon Kye-sang version.)

And to balance out all that sweetness and humor (Mom chasing Sun-woo around yelling about underwear was a particular highlight), we also got a bit more serious with Soon-ae’s ticking clock growing louder and more ominous. I suppose you could dismiss her dilemma since a simple ceremony is apparently enough to end her wandering ghost days—why all the fuss when there’s an answer? But I see it as akin to facing an execution, even though we’re told that she’d be moving on to a better place. Just because we may believe in a heaven after earth doesn’t mean we could face an excruciating death without second thoughts, right? Not when you hear that having sex would accomplish the same goal, certainly. Is that even much of a choice? SEX, PLZ.

So Soon-ae’s insistence on moving on the painless way is, at the very least, understandable and sympathetic. The problem is, in going after the easiest solution, she might fail and have to face the worst possible fate, and then it’ll be too late to take Painful Door No. 2 as an alternate exit route. Kim Seul-gi played Soon-ae’s fear particularly well—it’s enough to give you goosebumps—and there’s nothing like hearing that you’re slowly turning evil to kick the desperation into high gear.

Lucky for us, desperation comes hand-in-hand with identity confusion, romantic hijinks, and tons of hilarity. I’ve got my laughs ready to go.

Right? And I haven't even catch up to my watching and this recap already gives me the happy feels without consent. As with the previous recaps for this show. The flirting game in here is too strong.

As, much happier with the whole consent arch. Thank you writers. Loved the guitar serenade, but loved even more the 'oh so casual' showing of the guns - Sun Woo you flirt!!
Also enjoyed the Sung-jae mixed messages. Thanks Javabeans

Is the shaman hinting at something bad that will happen to sun-woo if ever soon-ae really resolves her grudge? Hope not.

I am really enjoying the show. Thanks for the speedy recaps. Off to read!

if soon-ae beds him then it will drain a great deal of I guess his liife force, a normal person would just frezze with her ghostie chill. I would not think the shaman would let her loose if it was going to put him in danger of not living through the, um..experiance though. and beside we all know that being a virgin is not really what her grudge is about dont we....mr killer cop I talking about you

I love this episode!

I replayed the singing part so many times! Can't we have a duet between Jo Jung Seok and Park Bo Young?

I am so happy that Bong Sun is going to be more proactive at going after Sun Woo as herself. And with the help of Soon Ae, it will be so hilarious.

I was afraid that Soon Ae would fall for Sun Woo and vice versa but I don't think that's going to happen.

I meant to say that this song does not really sound like her but Walking on Sunshine totally sounds like Park Bo-young.

What do you think?

I think she had a lot of help with her voice in Speedy Scandal but this is her playing the guitar and singing the ost for A Werewolf Boy.

i really like this episode. like it's good on how soon-ae and bong -sun came to agreement. at least now, we can all find peace because bong-sun now knows she's being possessed. i really feel sung-jae is possessed. creepy creepy sung-jae. i hated the part where PD lee kissed sun-woo like... DUDE! no. haha she's a bit selfish (PD Lee) i know your boyfriend died a long time ago but of course for sun-woo, he's still a friend. gah! getting really confused on who chef will end up with. it's true that without soon-ae's help, bong-sun will go no where but some people are saying chef is falling for bong-sun but chef is just sympathizing for her while chef is seen so open when is bong-sun-soon-ae taking over. it's really funny when soon-ae's bro was so annoyed when bong-sun wasn't taking any of his calls xD hahaha. so funny. can't wait for the next episode! gah! another dilemma is that chef is falling bong-sun-soon-ae while soon-ae just wants sex while bong-sun likes chef. sooooo confusing! huhuhu but let's just see next episode. let's remember that bong-sun-soon-ae is the main here since it's what the plot's main point and bong-sun is 2nd yet let's not go to BIG problem where soon-ae will be stuck with bong-sun just.... NO! hahaha. the teen girl KNOWS in the preview... OMG! NO TO PD LEE! hahaha IMO.

PD Lee sadly is the stupid "love rival" character that every kdrama thinks it must have.

Her kiss was annoying and I'll add I'm also tired of characters getting drunk as a way to solve their problems. Yet another drunken confession. *rolls eyes*

QUESTION!!

Seriously just a bit confused as to why Sun-woo is like so determined to reject PD Lee this ep? I just mean from a narrative point of view previously he was doing petty things to sabotage dudes he was jealous of (e.g. the car keys) and now he is not even trying to dissuade her from going out with other dudes and even supporting her to do so (although clearly still a bit unhappy about it on the inside). I'm just wondering why he is so adamant to never advance their relationship now he knows she likes him when previously it seemed like he was keen to but felt it was one-sided. Like is it just out of respect for the dead friend? I feel like his relationship with Bong-soon hasn't progressed that far (at least consciously) for him to not reply favourably when the woman he's been into forever throws herself at him. He's acting like something happened between him and PD Lee recently to restrain him more but nothing really did and I hope the next ep addresses his reluctance better coz I feel like it's not really making perfect sense in the narrative at this point?

Just something which I personally found a bit plot hole-y otherwise love love love sung-woox bong-sun/soon-ae

It's easy to think that the longing glances he has thrown PD Lee would be because he has romantic feelings for her, but they could also be for other reasons – the drama really hasn't clarified this.

Personally, I don't believe he actually likes her that way. He might be nostalgic (for when he did like her that way before his friend snatched her away), he might feel guilt towards his dead friend or he might just feel protective, possibly because he made a promise to his dead friend or just like a brother might sometimes actor towards his sister's suitors.

@ Len

I feel that Chef although he can be petty and naughty is actually quite an upright guy. He let So Hyung go when his friend got her first and seems to have treated that as missing his timing.

When she asks him if she should go on a date with another guy, he of course feels that he has no right to stop her, and he does not. Also he obviously does not feel enough for her to wish to hold on to her.

When she throws herself at him while drunk, again it's like when he was with Soon Ae. He does not want to take advantage of her. He also does not like her enough to welcome that kind of attention suddenly. Add to that, his ambivalence with regards to Soon Ae/Bong Sun, and he will probably have many hesitations, even if he does not make outright protests and rejections.

<He does not want to take advantage of her.

That's a good point – he's actually a nice, caring guy even if his outward persona would seem to suggest that he only thinks of himself.

@ alua

To me it seemed that he definitely had romantic feelings for her, because otherwise he wouldn't have imagined he was kissing her when he kissed bong-soon while under a fever.

@Growingbeautifully

I agree that he is an upright guy and feels that he has no right to stop her going out with another guy. But I mean when she dumps that other guy and basically tells him she likes him I don't quite understand why he is so hesitant (as from his point of view he still didn't realise how much he likes bong-soon).

I just feel like half the time they showed him acting like he really liked PD Lee and did want to hold onto her and now he's reacting like he never liked her romantically at all. I think today's episode (8) showed him being more aware of his feelings for bong-soon so it makes more sense for him to realise he no longer feels things for PD Lee, but yesterday I didn't think that it was really clear to him or that they had much closure for his love for PD Lee from his point of view.

Anyway, thank you both for your responses!!

He's stage actor and have been in musicals so I'm not surprise.
The song reminds of Yoo Seung Woo's "Hello" but with marshmallow instead of chocolate hehe.

Dude, you need to stop being so freaking adorable.

Thanks for the recap.

Jo Jung-seok is such a wonderful actor. He has a way of making the mundane moments in life warm and satisfying to watch. It's an acting skill that is hard to cultivate. Just watching Bong-Na and Sun-woo together doing the day to day things in life was so satisfying.

Also the physical ease he brings to their interaction is so charming. Sun-Woo resting his arm on Bong-Na's head without any self-consciousness was hilarious.

The core of Sun-Woo is caring and Jo Jung-seok does caring well.

I feel like he tends to play Beta heroes, my favorite type and this series, may it continue to grow and glow, is a nice bit of desert at the end of a hard week.

Anyone else think that Soon Ae's grudge isn't her virginity, but figuring out how she died?

+1. I'm kind of surprised that she hasn't thought about it. If you were a ghost wouldn't it be your first concern to remember how you died? But it's been almost 3 years and apparently it's not on the list of her priorities.

+1 I've wondered that pretty much since the beginning. But Soon-ae seems to be quite simple-minded. I'm not sure I fully understand her character, or if it's a matter of the drama not really establishing how this world with undead spirits works...

I think *because* it's been nearly three years that she isn't trying so hard to remember how she died anymore. If she tried and tried for the past two and some years and no inkling of how it happened, then I think now she's focusing on resolving her grudge instead. Which, I do not think it's her dying as a virgin that's holding her back.

And So Hyung's dead boyfriend is the evil spirit possessing Sung Jae! At least that's my theory.

This thing about virginity ...

I was wondering if it was a mistake to set so much store by losing one’s virginity. (It’s just too weird. Being a virgin is fine and extremely healthy!) So I looked up ‘virgin ghosts’ just to find out the popular belief about them. And here’s the thing... it’s not because the ghosts are virgins per se that gives them dissatisfaction in death... it is because society has made being married and having a family such an important way to define oneself if one is female, that they felt cheated out of fulfilling their role as wives and mothers. So although there are virgin male ghosts, these are very rare. They probably did not face that much societal pressure LOL!

Now then, when we come to think of it, is it not a fallacy then that Soon Ae could ever truly solve the grudge thing by using Bong Sun’s body and also using Chef “to lose her virginity” since in the end, Soon Ae will never be a wife or a mother. It is also impossible for Soon Ae to be the one who loses her virginity since she has no body... in all likelihood it will be poor Bong Sun who does. It’s a lose-lose-lose situation for both the girls and Chef!!!! And although it's common and happens all the time.... since when is treating a person as a sex object ok?

I've thought about that too, but aside from the other ghosts telling her that she's a virgin, maybe she had a memory loss due to the shock of who killed her or who were involve during her last few minutes. ( probably Sung-jae while being possessed with the evil spirit)

This drama feels waaay too short!! I need more cute!! hahahha

Its lovely to see how Sunwoo is the one who is trying to impress Bong Sun when she is not falling all over him trying to get him to 'do it once'hahaha The guitar singing, all the skinship like putting his hand on her shoulder when telling her to 'taste' things... I think he is not even realising what he is doing haahhaha

Sung jae is making me so nervous... Is he possessed 100% of the time or only part of the time? Maybe that is why his life is supposedly to be by himself like a hermit, because he is also prone to possession like Bong Sun? I think the ghost who is possessing him does leave his body at times, because of that dog incident, when he left in the car, off camera the dogs was being punished...

Thank you so much for the recaps... !

Love it that the Ghostess with the Mostest and Bong Sun are going to collaborate together! Love Soon Ae's expression when she got Bong Sun's permission to go get Sun Woo!

I don't know why I want Chef finally comes forward to PD Lee, dates her and get over it. Just because he has been hiding his feeling for her that long. It is like the process of him forgiving his friend that bullied him, he needs to confront the "problem" that is he too often hide his feeling behind his facade, so he can move on and grow as character.
If Soon-ae can help Bong-sun get closer to Chef without she has to posses her, I go all the way for the girls team! I think the reason why Soon-ae can't go to after life, is not because she is still virgin like she thought, but because the mystery behind her death that has not been solved.

I dunno, I'm not as optimistic as javabeans about this voluntary possession.

If Soon Ae is the one to seduce Sun Woo, then wouldn't Sun Woo be falling for Soon Ae and not Bong Sun? Yes, he admitted "I really like today's Na Bong Sun," but the only reason he hangs out with Bong Sun in the first place is because Soon Ae as Bong Sun piqued his interest. So if he didn't like Soon Ae before (which I believed he did), he certainly is going to like her now.

Moreover, has Soon Ae figured out a way to eject herself out of Bong Sun's body? As we know, Bong Sun has no recollection while she is possessed, so she will never remember how she gets together with her own boyfriend. I hope Soon Ae is able to eject herself periodically and fill Bong Sun in on the details. But I would much rather Soon Ae coach Bong Sun outside of her body and have girl talk sessions on how to make Sun Woo hers. Then when "the moment" comes, Soon Ae can take over and resolve her grudge.

How are we supposed to root for Bong Sun when the person we are seeing is Soon Ae? Unless Sun Woo realizes he doesn't like New Bong Sun and only likes Old Bong Sun (or Old-New Bong Sun as she has started to come out of her shell).

I thought that in this episode, Bong Sun grew a little to adjust to the consequences of when Soon Ae takes over. Her responses were a bit more careful in explaining her mood/memory changes. She also came out of her shell and brightened up. Not that it justifies Soon Ae's actions, but the awkward circumstances gave her that push to try.

Yes, Sun Woo only started hanging out with her because of his interest in Soon Ae's personality, but I don't think it's bad because let's be fair...Bong Sun in her previous state wasn't someone people wanted to be around. I also don't believe that insecurity is who she is. She is insecure, but I think and hope that she will grow even more as the show continues. The real Bong Sun is probably that "middle state" that Sun Woo said he likes.

I'm not sure where they will head with this grudge issue. I do agree that their current way of resolving this is not the right way, but I do like that they both are learning to work with each other. We're still only midway through so maybe they need to make a few mistakes until Bong Sun finds the right way to get Sun Woo. As for Soon Ae... maybe her actual grudge is something else? The thought of her possessing Bong Sun to use her body, even if it's consensual is...... ugh

0

Required fields are marked *

I'm skeptical as well. I actually don't feel Bong-su asking Soon-ae to possess her to have sex with the chef is within Bong-su's character. Or maybe she didn't understand that that's what Soon-ae meant with "I'll make him yours"???

Sex or no sex, I don't quite see what propels Bong-su to make such a request, with her personality she'd seem more like someone to quietly watch from the sidelines if Sun-woo did end up in a relationship with someone else. So she saw a drunk PD Lee kiss Sun-woo.... but that's just not enough motivation to start hatching some proactive seduction plans. Not when you're as shy as Bong-su and even if you're not shy – because as Bong-su said earlier on "It's wrong". Even Soon-ae sleeps with the Sun-woo once while possessing Bong-su's body that might solve her grudge (though I doubt it: I doubt it'll be that simple), but that doesn't mean at all that Sun-woo is going to become her boyfriend/start liking her.

I feel this scenario was just set up for "consent" issue but I'm not convinced at all by Bong-su asking to be possessed. Fortunately, I'm 100% certain that it won't get to Soon-ae sleeping with the chef.

You have a good point about Soon Ae getting trapped in Bong Sun's body. Soon Ae being a cheerleader and maybe asking Bong Sun to visit her family would work better for me.

However out of character for Bong Sun they have made an arrangement but what about Sun Woo who's consent is still being stomped on?

This drama makes me cringe whenever I think about it in a serious way.

Well, we'd hope that Soon-ae's plan isn't to drug Sun-woo but that if she sleeps with him, it'd be with him consenting after being seduced. Though I guess that would be only half-consent, since he has no idea that it would be Soon-ae using him for herself, not the girl that likes him sleeping with him.

It's a little strange too that Soon-ae thinks it's all a done deal now that she has Bong-sun's consent. She might run down the street yelling at the medium unni "I only need tonight" but Sun-woo has pushed her off every time she's tried to seduce him, and even if he's falling for Bong-sun (because, yes, I think he's falling for Bong-sun, not Bong-sun-possessed-by-Soon-ae) he's not going to just jump to sex / a relationship because he's got things to consider first (including being her boss).

Soon-ae's plan for action is quite short sighted, she doesn't seem to have considered that there might be obstacles at all... let alone has she ascertained whether this will actually resolve her grudge. It's just something she has always assumed and yet she doesn't even know how she died. She's desperate of course, but she's also wilfully naive/stupid.

When Soon-ae seduced those other men, that was kind-of-consent by the men (not by the women she used for that, of course).

It's not the same in this instance: If she manages to have sex with Sun-woo in Bong-sun's body, that's rape. Because Sun-woo must assume that he has sex with Bong-sun. He doesn't know he has sex with a different person.

This kind of rape is an interesting one, of course. Just think of Arthur being raped by Morgan Le Fay, or the switch-rape in the Nibelungenlied.

I honestly think you guys are taking things too far! To call it rape?? It really is not that serious. I don't understand why some people are taking this drama so seriously. It is suppose to be lighthearted and fun.

Bong-sun giving permission to be possessed isn't out of character either. We haven't really spent time with the real Bong-sun. I felt like this episode showed her in a better light. Now that she's more comfortable with Chef she is able to emote more. Who would have thought that ep 7 Bong-sun biting someone's leg was the same Bong-sun as ep 3?

Chill out guys, it's not that serious!

I just started watching this drama a few days ago, not that I didn't expect it to be this good, but I did and I knew I'd hate waiting every week. But somehow I just couldn't wait any longer. This drama initially got me with its premise, and Park Bo Young's comeback in dramas made it really tempting. Then they went casting Kim Seul Gi and I've been loving her since Flower Boy Next Door. And Jo Jung Seok, man, I didn't really follow his works after The King 2 Hearts but he is indeed a decent actor. Well, I do have this biased impression that actors who were great in musicals would always be great anywhere else.

This drama hits the right place every single time. There is not even one scene I didn't enjoy watching. Soon Ae, despite her goal of wanting to resolve her grudge, she was human enough to actually care for Sun Woo's well-being, and as much as I like Bong Soon in this episode, I hope she catches up faster. I'm especially intrigued with Sung Jae's character, though if I do not read the recaps here it wouldn't cross my mind at all that there's a possibility that he's possessed. I'm looking forward to know more about him.

The total lack of concern for Sun Woo's well being was strange for a girl who is usually thankful. Could the increasing amount of attention from Chef coupled with the 'threat' of So Hyung have driven a sense of consideration away from Bong Sun?

I agree so much on javabean pointing out “I really like today’s Na Bong-sun,” because I think this slightly shows where Sunwoo stands.

The girls screaming "FIGHTING!" in the preview made me quite happy. I'd really like to see some good teamwork with these two and yes to them possibility interchanging more often!

Yes, I'm all for greater team work between the girls but without the possession. Bong Sun should speak to her grandma about ways to find out what is truly holding Soon Ae back from crossing over ... most of us feel that with the suspicious hidden hatred of Sung Jae (or his posssessor spirit) for her family, the issue is something else altogether.

Soon Ae can give Bong Sun tips on how to be more assertive and attractive without resorting to possession... it's like hiring an impersonator to pretend to be me to gain an advantage that I'm not trying to learn how to gain by myself. Not an honest gain.

Other than that, I love Bong Sun as herself and how she is becoming more relaxed and happy as herself. She only needs to realize that she's already so attractive as she is, she does not need help from anyone. :)

@panshel I absolutely agree with you. I can't get around to liking the idea of this voluntary possession. As you stated, it is still Soon Ae interacting with Chef; therefore, it is Soon Ae whom Chef will eventually fall completely in love with. Thus, not only does Bong Su lose Time but she also loses her crush in the process of the possession.

In this episode, I'm actually frustrated at the point that the medium unni did not even mention any of the consequences that Bong Su will have to face if Soon Ae does accomplish sleeping with Chef (it is, after all, Bong Su's body). The only thing that seemed to have stopped the medium unni was because of her relationship with chef's mom.

That's true too.

Even Bong-su herself should be questioning this more – at least investigating it with grandma or something because she should know that won't just be as simple as "possess you once, sleep with the guy once, all problems solved for everyone".

It doesn't matter who the Chef falls in love with, I don't think that is the primary problem here.

Having sex with a person who doesn't want to have sex with you is rape. Bong-sun just decided to allow Soon-ae to deceive the Chef and have him raped (she might be too naive to realise that though) so that she can stop a possible relationship between him and his crush.

Required fields are marked *

While I agree that love may not be the primary problem here, I do think that Bong Sun is getting the shorter end of the stick here. Laying it out, it's not really a win-win situation as Soon Ae suggested. She'll be the only one who gets what she wants while both the living - Bong Sun and Chef - have to deal with the aftermath that they were both deceived (chef thinking Bong Sun is Bong Sun and Bong Sun thinking chef likes her for her). Yes, chef may be warming up to the real Bong Sun now, but who is to say his feelings will remain the same after knowing that he was decieved. So, I guess what I'm concerned about (in short) is that the terms of this deal between the 2 girls are unfair and I do agree with you that Bong Sun may be too naive to realize it (and the consequences that follow).

I keep comparing this to Harry Potter where Tom Riddle's mother used a love potion to seduce and marry his father (muggle). After many years, she came to believe that the father will love her for her, so she stops the love potion. Once he's free from the potion, he realizes the truth (that he doesn't love her) and leaves her. I'm hoping this drama doesn't turn out to be something like this, lol.

I actually don't really like soonae's personality... She was quite thoughtless in her possessions. Even now, she backs off but i have no doubt she'd try again with someone else. I wish she had apologized sincerely to bongsun for the trauma she caused instead of constantly half apologizing and half blaming bongsun. Also, she's snarky to sunwoo's sister and i feel bad for her. And even when i watched episode 7 raw, i got the impression that sunwoo likes bongsun as herself more than the possessed version. When she's herself he tends to be sweeter than when she's possessed by soonae. I can't argue that bongsun can thank soonae for making him more attentive and open to her, but even in the beginning he was already worried about her and he would have eventually helped her... What changed is bongsun herself, in that she isn't super conscious and afraid of ghosts anymore so she can concentrate on other things and not be dozing off and scared all the time, and that's also thanks to soonae.

I'm on the fence on this voluntary possession thing. Hopefully, being possessed voluntarily will be different from a forced possession. Maybe they can share her consciousness based on the preview, or have a schedule ala hyde, jekyll and i. Or maybe soonae can just coach bongsun outside her body, so sunwoo and bongsun's romance will be real.

As for sungjae, i think the ghost that possesses him (if that's right) genuinely likes sunwoo, eun hee and mom while having a grudge against soonae and her family. I'm theorizing that he probably also liked eun hee before her accident, and somehow her accident is connected with his and soonae's death. Or if he isn't possessed then perhaps eunhee's accident is connected with dad somehow and there's a revenge plot going on.

Lastly, what's up with the dog that barks at possessed people not barking anymore??

@ Bea

Voluntary or not, possession is possession and it is not right. What Bong Sun said at first when she refused Soon Ae was correct. It was wrong to possess another person and it should therefore be wrong to allow the possession.

I have other reasons on why it does not sit well with me too (Comment 40 below) so I'm not so much on the fence as on the other side of this one.

Definitely if they could go the coaching way, preferably also without trickery, and gain the love of your life that way, I'll be all on board.

Yes I also felt that he is relating with Bong Sun as herself with less tension, definitely he is not so on his guard and therefore more relaxed and sweeter towards her as you say.

As for coming and going into/out of Bong Sun, they will need to constant help of Shaman lady and her magic stick! :)

This episode has put a stamp on how good this drama really is. I too was a bit uncertain on how the love line is going to work when the chef only seem to respond to the Soon Ae version of Bong Sun. It's nice to see that Sun Woo is cozying up to the real Bong Sun and that she has finally let some of her guard down. Now that I think about it, Soon Ae and Bong Sun are a lot alike in some ways, it's just that they are polar extremes of the same personality type (if that makes sense).

The only downside I am starting to see in the drama is that the main plot and leads are so good right now that I am starting to get tempted to skip any scenes that did not have them in it. Oh well, I am just stupid that way... just leave it to me to have qualms over a drama being too good. lol

Thanks JB!

Although I do love this show, here's the thing (or 2 or 3) and I know other commenters have said something similar...

- We may have consent between the girls, but what it amounts to is 2 girls agreeing to make use of each other to manipulate a 3rd person who is definitely not consenting since he does not know. I need my heroines to have gained the love of their crushes honestly, and if the love is not meant to be, to let it go. I'm not sure I can root for a heroine who is underhanded.

- I want to believe in the development of a love relationship, where it is because she cares for Sun Woo more than for herself, Bong Sun will not resort to wiles and trickery to get him. This sudden decision to get Soon Ae's help smacks of desperation and selfishness and on top of that, it seems pretty sudden.

- This turn of events feels like something a 2nd lead female will do ie take all action possible to secure man for self so that a possible rival will not have him. It does not sit well for a main lead character to go this way.

I know in life, men and women have often toyed with one another, using all manner of falsehood to gain attention and 'love', however in a drama where I'd root for the underdog and want to see her triumph, I need that triumph to have been a little more above board and praiseworthy.

1st off, PBY made the act of simply listening to someone sing/play the guitar interesting.

But as great PBY was (as usual), KSG stole the show this ep - esp. in the scene near the end where Soon-ae tries to persuade Bong-sun into agreeing to a win-win set-up.

Prior to this ep, we didn't really get to see much of KSG's acting chops (aside from a couple of sad/quiet moments) since Soon-ae was mostly acting a bit crazy.

But the writer(s) for this ep allowed KSG to shine.

Going back to wanting to see more of BS, herself, and not her possessed by SA - the other side of the coin was that w/ BS being possessed, we didn't get to see much of KSG (aside from flashbacks and the like).

Have to say - that medium unni sure can run for a woman of her size/age and she seems to a 6th sense when it comes to knowing when/where ghosts would get off public transport (going back a couple of eps - SA must be "heavy" for a ghost since when she climbed into Sun-woo's bed could clearly see the weight indentations); good to see a little more depth added to the medium unni's character in this ep.

Why would anyone want to steal a bicycle seat (ok - maybe from a high-end bike, but from a rental?).

As for So-hyung and Sun-woo - we get to see 2 people saying things that they don't really mean (until the drunk confession), but more so for So-hyung now than Sun-woo.

Don't think SW is totally over his evident previous crush/feelings for SH, but engages in the opposite-speak due to his keeping to his cool/cocky persona (and not wanting to be seen as the "needy" one), but also in part due to some confusion due to the stirring of affection for BS.

SW had been carrying a torch for SH for some time (where he had little/no interest dating) - so it would be unnatural/weird for him to be rid of those feelings so quickly.

As for the Sous-chef, the character is meant to be a bit of a jerk/annoying - but the actor does a good job of not crossing the line (serves his purpose of being annoying, but not to the extent where you hate him) - good job in a difficult role to do well.

Thank you for the recap!

I was actually planning to drop this series because I pity Bong sun so much, but this post made me interested in it again.

Awww, I'm actually disappointed that Bong sun has to make that decision of let Soon Ae take over her body for makin' Sunwoo fall for her.
I mean, if that's the case, that means BongSun doesn't want Sunwoo to love HER as herself, and she try anything to make Sunwoo hers. It just doesn't feel quite right..
I hope the writer do have something in mind to make Sunwoo and bonging fall in love by themselves without the help of Soon ae..

But still, I'm loving this drama so much i hope it will get better and better. Can't wait for tomorrow!

Man I just feel sorry for the Song Queen Park Jung Ha (So-hyung) When will she ever get her man :(

Other than that a fun episode. Looking forward for the next episode.

Plus the mystery of the BiL is a storyline that I am looking forward to. Is he possessed makes a lot of sense since it is nearly 3 years since he married the sister so evil spirit possession is not out of the question or perhaps split personality?

have more to say but busy at the moment. will catch up later sry
:(

I understand that people get upset with PD Lee's drunken confession kiss. Then again, compared with Bong-sun's conspiracy to rape the Chef, that's a rather minor issue, isn't it?

I'm not so much upset by PD Lee's confession as I think it's a) an unnecessary part of the storyline and b) so utterly boring because this happens ALL THE TIME in dramas. She could just be an adult and – rather than bring her date to the restaurant and then ask Sun-woo for his opinion when she is really fishing for just one answer – actually say what she thinks/feels.

I can't agree with calling it "conspiracy to rape". Deception, betrayal, sure, but rape?

Does Sun-woo agree to have sex with Soon-ae? If the answer is no, then it would be rape.

He's been interacting with both Soon-ae and Bong-sun, and it's not entirely clear who his feelings are developing for: Soon-ae or Bong-sun or both of them. To him, in any case, there is only one person and if he willingly sleeps with the body of Bong-sun, he could just as much be agreeing to have sex with Soon-ae or Bong-sun or both. The fact that he doesn't know that the two distinct personalities of this body belong to two different people (one with a body, one with no body of her own) is deception but I'm not going to call it rape.

It's a completely fictional scenario since there are no ghosts in real life and we have got no laws that define whether a human person sleeping with a human possessed by a ghost without their knowledge falls under rape.

^you said everything beautifully. yes, the issue of consent can be applied to the drama but rape is stretching it. don't throw that word around so casually. just because something is fictional, obviously it doesn't mean that it can't be analyzed and read into, and of course they are capable of perpetuating problematic beliefs regarding race, gender, sex, etc. but as alua said, deception would not equate rape in this scenario and to apply this word to a fictional scenario between a person possessed by a ghost and another person is very dubious, not quite logical.

Yes, that is kind of what I just wrote on 25 above. :) It's all Bong Sun to him, until ep 7 he seemed to have zero romantic feelings for the original BS so if anything had happened I'd say he consented to SA and never to BS.

Of course, to call it rape, I made a few assumptions that are far from 100% conclusive.

I assume that Sun-woo showed no romantic or sexual interest in either Bong-sun or "Bong-sun" until this episode. He evidently doesn't want to have sex with "manic" Bong-sun.

I also assume that Bong-sun knows what Soon-ae means when she makes her offer: Soon-ae will pretend to be Bong-sun and have sex with Sun-woo.

Finally, I assume that, when Soon-ae possesses Bong-sun, that is a 100% take-over of Bong-sun's body. I also assume that Soon-ae has enough traits of a human being to consider her a person.

Now, imagine Sun-woo and "Bong-sun" have sex. Sun-woo, right now, would believe that he has sex with Bong-sun. He never agreed to have sex with Soon-ae, and if he was asked to, he probably never would agree to it.

Of course, Soon-ae is a ghost and not subjected to human justice or even morals. But Bong-sun is. It's not impossible to come up with scenarios that are similar enough, that could happen in reality, to evaluate whether it could be called rape or not.

There was a case in my country where a guy invited his girlfriend to the basement of a club run by his gang. She ended up having sex with him, and then, without her knowledge, had anal sex with a senior gang member who called in a "favour" from her boyfriend.
When she found out later, the men were charged with rape and abetment.
They argued that it wasn't rape because "she agreed to have sex" and "she had been flirting with the senior gang member before". That didn't really convince the judges, for some reason.

I agree with you, of course, with the drinking and kissing and all the other nonsense. I can see the point the writer is trying to make, even if it is lazy (but won't bother most of the audience because they sure are immune to it after the 1000 repetition): Bong-sun must be forced to make a rash and bold decision here.

Just like the PD, who feels like she is cornered when she notices her jealousy, Bong-sun needs to be desperate enough to make the wrong decision at this point. It could have been solved more elegantly (much, much, much more), but it brings about the plot point that the writer was working towards for a while now.

I am interested to know if this drama has generated this type of debate in South Korea. Are there useful discussions occurring on consent/sexual assault in the home country or only on foreign forums?
