News bites: July 5, 2015

Hyun Woo, Do Ji-han, Park Yoo-hwan
- Hyun Woo (Gap-dong) is positively considering a reunion with director Kim Seok-yoon and the writing duo behind the upcoming webtoon adaptation of Awl (he worked on both the recent Detective K movie and I Live in Cheongdam-dong with them). In the story about blue-collar workers who were unjustly let go in 2002, Ji Hyun-woo (Angry Mom) will play the union chief who stands up to management on the group’s behalf, and Hyun Woo, if he accepts, will act as his helper/assistant. Awl will air on JTBC in the latter half of 2015. [TV Report, Sports Chosun]
- The military thriller Musudan has added two members to its cast. Park Yoo-hwan (I Need Romance 3) will play a petty officer, while Do Ji-han (Basketball) will play a calm and stoic member of the North Korean army. About a mysterious accident that occurs within the demilitarized zone, the movie will chronicle the ensuing desperate struggle between elite members of the North and South Korean armies. Filming will begin shortly. [Dong A, My Daily]
- Say hello to the newest members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences: Veteran actors Choi Min-shik and Song Kang-ho and directors Bong Joon-ho and Im Kwon-taek were among the 322 new members added this year. The U.S.-based organization is responsible for selecting the recipients of the prestigious Academy Awards (Oscars), and as the latest inductees into the Academy, the four have earned the right to cast their votes for the winners of the annual awards ceremony, and have joined a prestigious organization, recognized worldwide, that is dedicated to the celebration of film. [MBN]
- Hotly anticipated webtoon adaptation Cheese in the Trap has secured a spot on the fall roster; the show will air on tvN beginning in mid-October. [MT]
- This could be the breakout role for Lee Won-geun (Hyde, Jekyll, Me). After a round of auditions, he’s been selected to play the student (and love interest) of Kim Haneul in Teacher. Another detail has been revealed about the scandalous tale of indecision and love: there’s another female teacher at the all-boys high school (still uncast) in the mix. Cameras will begin rolling as soon as casting is complete, and before the end of the year. [Star News]
- Go Hyun-jung has turned down Our Heaven, tvN’s upcoming Fri-Sat drama, and the cable network is on the search again for the show’s main character, a 38-year-old female who goes back to college and begins a new life. Although there are many terrific actresses in that age group, it sounds like a tricky role to fill, and while I don’t envy the job of tvN’s casting department, I can’t wait to see who takes the job. Written by So Hyun-kyung (Two Weeks, 49 Days) and directed by Kim Hyung-shik (Secret Door, Suspicious Housekeeper), Our Heaven will air after the conclusion of Oh My Ghostess in August. [Osen]
- Jo Yoon-hee (King’s Face) is finalizing contract negotiations to play the female lead opposite Yoo Hae-jin in Key of Life, which is a remake of a Japanese film about a killer and a struggling actor who switch identities. The Korean adaptation of the rom-com will be directed by Lee Kye-byuk (Beast and the Beauty) and will begin filming once casting is complete. [Osen]

<he’s been selected to play the student (and love interest) of Kim Haneul in Teacher.
I dislike those kind of storylines in any case, but Kim Haneul has played this role before, hasn't she?
<Our Heaven
Sounds interesting, it's also realistic premise (and I hope they present it that way). There are plenty for 30, 40, 50 year olds (and older) at uni! Well, in the UK at least :-) (Actually, no, I've got an older Japanese friend that's at uni in Japan in her 40s as well.)
I hope they won't rely too much on stereotypical age-related jokes/problems – like the character not getting the music her uni mates are listening to, or not understanding certain cultural references that are supposedly unique to 'youth', or being technologically inept because of being older. I know too many mature students to know that these are largely non-issues in real life.

Yeah, I think Kim Haneul has. I think I'd like it if it were messed up and not a full blown romance. I once read a manhwa called 'A Seduction More Beautiful than Love' about a student-teacher relationship and the tone of it would be more fitting, I remember he seduced her and then reported her to get her fired; I'd be more willing to watch something like that instead lol.

Congrats to Song Kang Ho and Choi Min Sik!! They deserved it!
Sad Go Hyun Jung turned it down.. I thought she would be terrific (as always) in that role... Well, let's hope they'll find good actress to fill the role..

It was very funny and with a lot of heart, though rather slowly paced (as a lot of Japanese films are).
Most Korean comedies I've seen tend to have a quicker pace which hopefully fixes that flaw.

yeah, the Academy really chose the cream of the Chungmuro crop. I hope we see more Korean actors (the good ones) inducted in the future too. I rather hope Jeon Do-yeon, Bae Doona and Go Ah-sung will be among the future members invited to join.

yay Cheese in the Trap finally has a time slot! Now please cast someone good as Hong Sul and everyone else.....I don't want this to be to Park Hae-jin what My Lovable Girl or whatever was to Rain. (I don't fear tvn as much as the Big 3 for putting out crappy dramas, but still).
and yay for Lee Won-geun! I've been rooting for him to get a break ever since he played the younger hero on Wild Chives & Soybean Soup, he was lovely in that with Yoon So-hee.

Good that CITY has secured a time slot. Now we'll just have to wait until they complete the casting news. Is it just me or aren't they taking forevahh to cast the rest of the characters? I'm freaking excited to know who'll play Hong Seol ??? The top three actresses the k-netz chose are pretty convincing to me as Seol, I'm impressed. Hopefully they'll get to cast Chun Woohee *crosses fingers*

It's a pity that Go Hyun Jung has turned down Our Heaven. I wonder which actress will fill in the role instead. Perhaps Kim Hee Sun will be back again from being a high schooler in Angry Mom? Haha (then cast Jisoo as the counterpart in the campus romance lol).

Ohhh Go Hyun Jung whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy :'( I really wanted to see her in that! She hasn't done a drama I actually wanted to watch in quite some time, but I love her!! Disappoint.
Good news for Cheese in the Trap though! Since reading about it here, I've become totally addicted to the webtoon. Can't wait to see the drama adaptation!

I was affected by the passing of Han Kyeong-seon. She played the quirky restaurant manager (who wore glasses) in Two Mothers.
