Mask: Episode 17
by LollyPip
These two lovesick dorks, I can’t even. But Min-woo and Ji-sook haven’t much time to enjoy their newfound romance, as they both have business to take care of, namely clearing Ji-sook’s name and making sure Seok-hoon gets punished. But their adversaries aren’t finished with their plans yet, and things will undoubtedly get worse before they get better.
EPISODE 17: “Family”
Finally, finally, Ji-sook sits down with Min-woo and tells him everything. She apologizes for lying to him, and I love that his first reaction is to worry about how hard all this was on her. “You must have felt so lonely, Byun Ji-sook-sshi.” Ji-sook asks him to say her name again, and he does, and they both smile.
Ji-sook says they still need to get a divorce, because she can’t keep living like this. Min-woo says he’ll take care of Seok-hoon, and talk to his father, and they can discuss divorce later. He wants to stay like things are, and Ji-sook is so moved she just grins at him.
Mi-yeon is furious, as she confronts her husband for trying to shoot her brother dead in the woods. Seok-hoon insists he was shooting at a deer — “I was hunting an animal.” Mi-yeon screams and throws a vase at him, but Seok-hoon doesn’t even flinch and repeats that he’s not lying. Mi-yeon kicks him out of the house.
On their way to talk to Papa Choi, Min-woo and Ji-sook are stopped by Mi-yeon. They invite her to come listen, since she needs to know what Seok-hoon tried to do, but Mi-yeon says she already knows everything. She says she can’t forgive Seok-hoon, but telling Papa won’t change anything since there’s no proof. She asks them to wait and she’ll figure a way to make Seok-hoon confess.
They don’t get a chance to respond, as Seok-hoon has made the first move and called a family meeting. He announces that he’s leaving the family, making himself look a martyr in front of Mi-yeon’s parents. He walks out right then and there, looking furious that nobody stops him.
Ji-sook promises Min-woo to find proof that Seok-hoon tried to kill him, and he in turn promises to clear her false charges and give her name back. So sweet, this boy.
Min-woo wakes the next morning with Ji-sook cuddled in his arms, and he cutely tugs her ear to wake her up. It doesn’t work, but his whispered, “I love you” does the trick, and an attack of shyness has him pretending she dreamed it. They argue over who likes the other more until Min-woo gets goosebumps, and on his way to shower he says this is the first time he’s seen her face so relaxed.
Later, Min-woo walks into Seok-hoon’s office, and wordlessly gifts him with a hard right hook. He demands to know what he’s been doing to Ji-sook all this time — did he really think to run the company by threatening her and killing Min-woo? He promises to pay Seok-hoon back for all the pain he caused to Ji-sook.
Seok-hoon asks if he’s here to declare war, sneering that the dog with the loudest bark is the one most afraid. He says that Ji-sook made the decision to take over Eun-ha’s life, not him, conveniently leaving out the part where he arranged it so she had no other choice.
Mi-yeon stops Ji-sook on her way to work and accuses her of destroying her family. Ji-sook calmly counters that Min-woo would be dead if she weren’t here. Mi-yeon thinks she would have protected him, but Ji-sook says that she can’t, because she loves Seok-hoon. She’s been living with her eyes and ears closed.
Ji-sook sits with Eun-ha’s father for an interview, where he mentions that the embezzlement charges have been dropped. When asks for her statement, Ji-sook says she has nothing to say right now.
Mi-yeon finds Ji-sook’s family at their coffee shop, angry that they’re happy while her family has been destroyed. Dad hires a cute little kid to get a cup of coffee at Ji-sook’s shop, made by Ji-sook herself, and he drinks it while watching her work. She spots him through the window and runs outside, and calls out to him.
He can barely answer when she asks how he’s been, and apologizes for disappearing. They cry and hug each other right there in the street, and she assures him that there’s no more need for her to hide. She promises to come home soon, but she wants to see Mom now.
Dad is worried that seeing Ji-sook could be too much of a shock, and tells Ji-sook that the date for her surgery is set. This is news to Ji-sook, but the shop needs her and Dad says he’ll explain later. He heads back to his shop and runs into Mi-yeon, who says she’s not okay when he asks.
Ji-sook barks at Ji-hyuk for not telling her that Mom needed surgery, and he admits that he’s going to be her liver donor. He also asks her not to see Mom until after the surgery, in case it upsets her too much.
Min-woo gets all snazzed up to go to see Ji-sook’s family at their coffee shop, and nervously asks Chang-soo to be honest about how he looks (“Not too honest. Be moderately honest.” HA). Chang-soo pronounces him perfect, like the great wingman he is.
Mom and Dad greet him as their boss, and get nervous when he offers to help carry bosses, trying to impress them. Mom’s is so befuddled when he compliments her, then goes on to compliment the daughter he shouldn’t even know she has. Ji-hyuk is annoyed, since he’s unaware that Min-woo knows who he is now, and he’s perplexed when Min-woo is all brotherly towards him.
Ji-sook tracks down the hunter that Seok-hoon paid to shoot Min-woo, but he maintains that it was a mistake and he already talked to the cops. She warns him that he’s a loose end now and in danger, and puts her card in the doorjamb when he slams the door in her face.
Next she gets a list of everyone who worked on the lighting in the hall where her speech was given, hoping to find out who caused the lights to fall. She gets a call from Min-woo, who’s cranky that she never calls him, and she shoots back that he doesn’t answer her texts. They sound like an old married couple already.
Min-woo talks to the doctor who did the autopsy on the dead loan shark, and he notes that there were several strange inconsistencies. First of all, there’s no evidence it was murder — in fact, it’s the doctor’s opinion that it wasn’t murder at all. Min-woo asks if he’s willing to testify to that in court.
Min-woo takes all the information he’s gathered to a lawyer friend, and tells him he wants to clear Ji-sook’s name. He also wants to put the person who falsified the charges in jail — Seok-hoon.
That night, Min-woo and Ji-sook are snuggled up in bed again, but Min-woo is whining that she’s playing hard to get. He orders her grouchily to call him every hour starting tomorrow, and she says that then he’s got to answer her texts. His hand gets twitchy, but he insists his arm isn’t falling asleep, but suddenly sits up and dumps her head on the bed when she gets comfy.
Ji-sook just smiles at him, and tells him that she needs to get ready to leave the house. She wants to go home as Byun Ji-sook, and love him as herself. Min-woo surprisingly agrees that she can go — but he’s going with her. They can live with her family and get married again.
He even promises to treat her family well and calls her self-centered when Ji-sook starts to ask if he’d really do all this for her, HAHA. He angles for a smooch if she’s really that touched, offering his cheek, and turns his head so she kisses his lips when she obliges him. So adorkable, I can’t stand it.
Alone in her room, Mi-yeon puts on Seok-hoon’s glasses and wonders how he sees the world. Angry, she smashes their wedding photo, and tells the maid to clean up anything that could possibly remind her of him. She even takes off her wedding ring and throws it down among the glass shards.
Seok-hoon sits alone too, looking at his photos of Eun-ha and Ji-sook. He starts to rip them both up but stops, frustrated.
Ji-sook lies awake in bed, thinking of having a wedding with Min-woo the way she always dreamed, with the man she loves. In her mind she sees him at the altar, this time smiling at her with love in his eyes, and her family there to celebrate. She falls asleep smiling.
Director Shim gets his hands on the hunter, and Mi-yeon looks on as he gives him the same treatment they gave the man who rigged the lighting to fall. The hunter confesses easily, and promises Mi-yeon that he’ll tell the police everything. But Mi-yeon tells Shim to kill him if he tells the police the truth, refusing to explain why.
Min-woo and Ji-sook check out a place for her family to live, and Min-woo deadpans that he’ll be living here too so it can’t be too small. Ji-sook gets a little naughty, saying that small is good so they’ll be skin-to-skin, and Min-woo gapes at her sassy mouth but dryly supposes he can get used to it, ha.
Min-woo tries out the bed and Ji-sook lays down with him, but Min-woo says it feels weird. They bounce around and end up face-to-face, and Ji-sook starts to nuzzle up on him while Min-woo complains that he’s not emotionally ready yet. Wait, have they still not…
They go shopping for a ring for Ji-sook’s mother, to give her after her surgery. Ji-sook picks out a pretty gold ring, and Min-woo proceeds to buy the entire display case. Whoa, he really wants to impress his future mother-in-law!
The hunter approaches Min-woo and Ji-sook to apologize for his actions and ask for their protection from Mi-yeon. He wants to run, but Ji-sook says they’ll just chase him forever. She deflates when the hunter says he doesn’t have any evidence that Seok-hoon hired him, but then she gets an idea.
Mi-yeon lingers outside Seok-hoon’s office, and spots him in a meeting — he sees her too, but doesn’t react. He has evidence that Papa Choi didn’t pay inheritance tax when he transferred his shares to Min-woo (easy, since he prepared the transfer), and plans to use the information to scare him.
Scar brings Seok-hoon to talk with the hunter, who says that he wants twice what he was paid or he’ll go to the police. Seok-hoon growls that he wasn’t even the one who shot Min-woo, that he himself did it. He tells Scar to kill the man if he tries this again — but says to give him the money this time.
… and Ji-sook got it all on film. Brilliant, now they have the evidence they need that Seok-hoon shot Min-woo. She gives Min-woo the USB with the recording on it, saying that he should be the one to turn Seok-hoon in.
Mi-yeon gets up her nerve to talk to Seok-hoon, and she tells him that she hates him. She calls him the worse kind of devil, and he just responds that he loves her. She scoffs at that, since he would have tried to kill her brother if he loved her, and he swears it was a misunderstanding. Again he says he loves her, and she starts to cry that its a lie and hit him, but he pulls her into a hug.
She whimpers that he left so easily just because she said to go, and asks him to come home. He says he can’t, and that she knows why. He ushers her out of his office, telling her to come by whenever she misses him.
Director Shim briefs Mi-yeon later on Ji-sook’s mother’s surgery, and that Ji-hyuk is the donor. Mi-yeon muses that if Ji-hyuk couldn’t donate his liver, Ji-sook would have to do it, and that she’d like to see Ji-sook in a sticky situation.
She finds Ji-hyuk on a walk with Myung-hwa (and looking awfully date-y I might add) and aims her car right at him as he crosses the street. At the last second she slams on the brakes, narrowly missing him. She gets out, and tells him they need to talk.
She says that she’s upset because his noona stirred up her life, instead of laying low like she should have done. Ji-hyuk tells her that Ji-sook is moving out soon, but that doesn’t mollify Mi-yeon at all. She wants Ji-sook to pay for the damage she caused.
I love how everything is a competition with Min-woo, and he crows that Mom will love his mountain of gifts more than the one little ring Ji-sook got her. I wouldn’t count on that, dude. He teases that she’ll probably say to him, “My best present is you,” throwing Ji-sook’s words back in her face with a self-satisfied smirk. They head out, Ji-sook to the hospital and Min-woo to the police station to turn in the USB video, as Mi-yeon frowns down from the balcony.
Dad promises Mom a surprise when her surgery is over, and both he and Ji-hyuk can barely hold in the secret. Mom only says she’s sorry, then closes her eyes. Her monitor starts to beep and they can’t wake her, and she’s rushed into intensive care. The doctor says that the moment she wakes up, she needs the surgery. Then Ji-hyuk starts to look ill and pale, and red marks appear on his neck. What did Mi-yeon do??
Min-woo meets with his DA friend, but before he hands over the USB, he gets a call. He hears the recording of Ji-sook’s voice promising to do everything Seok-hoon tells her, and Seok-hoon telling her she has to die first. Seok-hoon comes on the line to say “I told you so,” that Ji-sook made the decision to deceive him of her own accord. Again, he leaves out the part where he dangled her off a cliff.
Now Min-woo has a decision to make, whether to turn in the evidence and see Ji-sook go to jail. When he hangs up, Min-woo palms the USB and tells his friend it’s not a good time. Next the police go to the house to search for evidence against Papa Choi for tax evasion, and he calls Seok-hoon to tell him to move back in.
Mom’s doctor denies Ji-hyuk as a donor now that he’s sick, saying that both he and Mom could die if they do the surgery now. Mom wakes up and needs surgery right away, and Dad calls Ji-sook in a panic. They beg the doctor to save Mom, as Mi-yeon lurks around a corner. Turns out she’d slipped crushed peanuts into Ji-hyuk’s drink when they talked, which he’s allergic to.
Mom weakly says that she’s out of hope, and Ji-hyuk begs her to hold on until Ji-sook comes. Still thinking she’s dead, Mom smiles that she’ll see her Ji-sook soon, and tells her husband that she’ll go to their daughter and wait for him. No, that’s not what they meant! Why don’t they say that Ji-sook is alive??
Ji-sook finally arrives at the hospital room, only moments after her mother passes away. Disbelieving, she tells Mom that she’s here, and she brought her husband, and with shaking hands she puts the ring she bought on Mom’s finger. It starts to sink in that Mom is gone, and Ji-sook begs her not to go like this through sobs of grief.
COMMENTS
Well that just stinks. Why did Mom have to die? I guess it’s to give Ji-sook the final push she needs to go all avenging-valkyrie on Seok-hoon, because the one thing you do not do is mess with her family. And I’m hoping this wakes up Mi-yeon to realize that her actions have very real and deadly consequences, now that she’s indirectly killed TWO people with her attempts to screw with someone (and she’s damn lucky her little peanut trick didn’t kill Ji-hyuk — those allergies can be deadly). I still believe, in both cases, that her intent wasn’t for anyone to die, but it’s time to realize that her little plans to mess with people are getting them killed. That makes you a killer, whether or not you intended it.
And I don’t know about you guys, but Seok-hoon actually scared me for the first time in this episode. Something about the way he came home and said, “I’ll take it from here,” was just chilling, like he wasn’t just talking about the investigation. He’s got Papa Choi, Stepmom, and Mi-yeon begging him to come back to the house and the family, and this gives him all the power now. He can pretty much do what he wants, and what he wants is for Min-woo to die. For some reason, that gave me a ripple down my spine when nothing else he’s done has been able to make me that worried, and now he’s got the whole family under his thumb.
I still don’t quite get why, though, unless there’s some more backstory we haven’t seen, that he’s so invested in making sure Min-woo ends up dead. I’ve heard the speculations that he and Min-woo are half-brothers, and I wouldn’t put it past this show to throw in a birth secret (or two, let’s not forget that little hint way waaaay back, that Ji-sook and Eun-ha may have been twins) in the final hour. I have a feeling there’s a lot more going on with Seok-hoon than “he’s in the way of my money/power, so he’s got to go,” because having him declared insane would have done the trick just as handily, and with much less risk of backlash to Seok-hoon himself. No, there’s a reason Seok-hoon wants Min-woo dead, and since Min-woo hasn’t done one single thing to Seok-hoon personally in seventeen episodes, I’m guessing it’s got more to do with who he is than anything he’s done.
But there was a lot of cuteness in this episode too, and I have to squee over it! I love how Min-woo and Ji-sook’s senses of humor compliment each other, and how much fun she was having poking him to watch him squirm. Their cuddle session were so adorable too, though I’m concerned that that’s all they’re doing, since Min-woo was claiming he “wasn’t ready” when Ji-sook was teasing him. Come on guys, you’re married!
But even better, I love how they’re doing exactly what I knew they could do all along — teaming up and becoming stronger because of it. It says a lot that once Min-woo learned the truth about everything, he barely even gave a thought to all that Seok-hoon did to him. He was mostly furious over what he did to Ji-sook, and really only seemed to include the attempts on his own sanity and life as side-issues to his main concern of how he ruined Ji-sook’s life. And of course, Ji-sook has always been more angry about the way Seok-hoon goes after Min-woo than about how he treated her — she’s the ultimate Mama Bear, and woe betide the hunter who goes after her cubs. She wouldn’t stand for Min-woo to be threatened, and now that her mother has died due to Mi-yeon’s interference, it won’t be long before she’s roaring for Mi-yeon’s blood, too.

The damage SH does with complete planning is equal to MY damaging people without planning.... They are crazy made for each other evil couple.
JS mom's death i some how feel required because, it finally seems she paid for her wrong choice of only money can make her family happy(even though she was forced she had the guilt of making that choice by herself) & it also gives her push that is needed for the final battle of sweet couple against the evil couple... can't wait...

Agreed! I'd been rooting for Miyeon to come around and leave the dark side--but she just slipped further into it. Messing with Jisook's teleprompter is putting her into a sticky situation; don't mess with her mother's surgery!

Whenever I saw MY in any scenes after she decided to go with her plans to bring JS down, all I could think of was that famous Tyra Banks video where she goes off in her rant that has that famous gif/screencap - "I WAS ROOTING FOR YOU, WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU. HOW DARE YOU" - yep this pretty much sums up all my feeling towards MY right now.
I find it sad how she believes JS 'destroyed' her family when she herself let the real destructive psycho come into her family. She says she cares so much for her brother but by removing JS, she's essentially destroying the very happiness that her brother feels, such an ironic sisterly love. To me she seems to be using her family as an excuse to put all the blame on JS, because she can't admit to herself that her marriage didn't work due to SH being unfaithful.
Apart from that and several plot holes all the cuteness between MW and JS just made me melt, especially that sneaky kiss! Has anyone noticed how much girlier JS has gotten around MY? All that teasing really shows she's relaxed and finally open to MW.
One thing I am a bit confuddled about is the whole SH crushing on JS. Like when he was going to rip up the photos and JS's photo ended up being the top one. It's like do you keep that photo of her as a replacement for EH or are you jealous/pissed that this person who looks like EH doesnt have any feelings for you that you can control?
Im kinda glad SH is back in control I'd rather watch him go on a killing spree than MY because the actor is so amazing at portraying the evilness whereas MY just comes across as being petty and weak? There's just no epicness of evil whenever she accomplished something.
Off to watch episode 18 now, oh boy bring on more melo and crazyness please! Thanks for the recap!

I think that is the truly scary thing about MY. She doesn't seem epic evil, you almost like her, yet she is the one who is the serial murderer in the show. SH is epic scary, but only able to cause moderate harm.
Personally I'd much rather have SH attack me, because I would be on my guard and want to fight back. MY keeps everybody's trust and then destroys them.

Yesss it's like how SH said MY is a nice person, but her actions as a result of her jealousy says otherwise. You want to like her because you know she's just desperate for her husbands love, but indirectly causing nearly three peoples death really can't save you from being an innocent person.

I agree with you. The actions of HS and MY make literally no sense. I had high hopes for them in the beginning -- after that first episode kiss -- that they might equal or surpass the sexual tension and twisted natures of the second leads in Secret, but now ... just ugh. Particularly annoying because I really like the actor and actress.
And I was tired of loan shark guy before the end of the first episode. I'm only still here for the female lead and her brother.

And that's what happens when countless ppl need to fit into the 20-episode drama with the best ratings in its slot: Plot holes, characters who don't make sense, characters who used to make sense but not anymore, romance with just some "vibrations" and not actual steps.
I still like Mask and I was blown away with Secret; however, the truth is this writer has a frightening "curse" on him and probably needs some good old-fashioned "exorcism".Why else would it be impossible for him to complete his ideas in both his projects on different networks? It's obvious sometimes high ratings turn a perfectly fine script into a (semi-)mess-up the same way the low ratings do *sigh*

Seriously...the plot is so stupid, but I love the main couple and the actors playing the roles.
Papa Choi calling SH back to the house - makes NO sense AT ALL...Seriously.....this guy is a successful businessman and he starts whimpering like a kid??????
MY getting all psycho?????
Even Min Woo waiting to give the USB....seriously????? Yep.... that's really going to protect JS????? Getting that guy and everybody in jail is the best way to protect her!?!
These writers are simply lazy, lazy, LAZY. They don't even try to make sense!!!!

I agree! Some plots do not make sense.
How stupid is MY to obsessively love a guy whom she was fully aware is trying to kill her brother?
And, why was MW afraid to report SH to the police, just because SH blackmailed him about BJS? We all know that SH is the person who is in charge with everything! She was under a threat that her family may have been in danger if she didn't follow this switch.....
But I LOVE MW and BJS so much! I'd already abused the replay button over and over!

For me the plot started going off the rails at around EP15. Just how much evil can a bunch of people do and never attract the attention of the cops? Or anyone getting suspicious?
Everyone is psycho murderers, but nobody ever actually DOES anything about it.

I have never bought this plot. It was stupid from the very beginning and you could fill a few Titanic downing icebergs into the plotholes of this drama. Yes, this is all very, very true.
But frankly my dear, I don't give a damn. Main couple makes up for all silliness of the plot. Well, them and other relationships as I still find them interesting, like MY's fixation on SH. This drama is emotionally satisfying and so I have no problems what so ever in overlooking it's plotholes.

Same here i just don't care about the illogical stuff. The 4 lead actors are fantastic in their roles they make up for all the mess............i enjoy very much their connected parallels as couples and their interaction is extremely good that i ignore all the plotholes in the show. At this point all i need from the writer is to send the horrible evil pair to hell and give us a happy sweet ending for our main couple.

Same chingu! Ive long since gotten over the plot holes and inconsistencies. If one is looking for logic in Mask, they'll go crazy. Im just enjoying the show. Thanks for the recap lollypip.
"I still don’t quite get why, though, unless there’s some more backstory we haven’t seen, that he’s so invested in making sure Min-woo ends up dead" I've been thinking that since episode 12-13 (can't remember which) I've even left a couple of comments in previous posts. Maybe I'm overstating my point but damn it bugs me with ever episode. Show had better give us a good explanation for this or words shall be had.
Also my biggest chills moment of the episode was when even in the middle of mi yeon's tantrum he never once faltered or lost conviction when declaring his innocence. Like he could make her believe it if he said it often enough. And to deny culpability when being confronted by the witness to his crimes damn that takes balls .... Aaanndd major psychopathic tendencies.
Also mi yeon! Wtf! They went there.. They really went there. I thought her character was shaping out to be of a person who is caught in a devil vs deep sea situation. But no.. She is the bitch she seems to be. Poisoning eun ha though by no means justified could at least be seen as a crime of passion. Messing with a sick woman's surgery just to create trouble for a woman you blame for your problems! Because what? You're too cuckolded by your murder happy love! She is literally taking the if I close my eyes, I can't see it and so it doesn't exist approach! Damn mi yeon I had more hope for you than that. But no.. Looks like you and seok hoon deserve each other.

I lost hope for MY since ep 12 when its revealed that she was the one who caused EH to die. She's such a morally twisted character. I feel like im in a character roller coaster w her. There r moments of humanity in her but then she just shoves that aside and chooses cruelty. Im done w her. Predicted her recklessness and lack of resposibility ago in recap 12. It's odd, both Seok-Hoon and Mi-Yeon are evil creatures but I'm more frustrated with Mi-yeon's path to villianry. She's a reactive while Seok-hoon is more proactive. Her husband knows she's no match, lying to her face to use her, knowing she can't resist him... She's emotional and becoming more unhinged as the episode continues. When she starts getting crazy, I'm relieved when Seok-hoon takes over because he's relatively more in control than she. Like how dare you target Ji-sook's family because your husband is an evil cretin? I'm more intrigued by Seok-hoon's villianry than hers, tbh. Except she intends to focus on the real bad guy here. Like how long does it take to find out about Seok-hoon's father? And we're two episodes from the end without any real revelation about his reasons for this 18-episode revenge plot.
This episode and the next one had me on some crazy rollercoaster ride. Squees for our main OTP, rage for our evil duo, annoyance that they kill off poor mother in the 18th episode... I'm so exhausted.

Its interesting isn't it. MY isnt as cookie cut-out villian-ish as her hubby. SH is clear abt his villainy but where MY is concerned, her motivations are just so contradictory and she makes the worst decisions. Its hard to root for her or understand her. She does almost everything based on emotions. Plus she's pretty selfish. MW would have died if JS wasn't there. And this happened when ? MY knew that SH was going to try to hurt him.
I remember wondering who MY wud choose back in ep 16 (I think). Well, her choice is clear if u take her actions from ep 17 & 18.

For me it's pretty clear. SH wants revenge against papa Choi. It seems papa Choi was somehow behind the destruction of SH's family (his mom's deatj and dad's current state). So in my opinion it makes oerfect sense that he wants to kill MW. He doesn't want to take away only papa Choi's company but also his designated heir and son - a person whom papa Choi seems to love in his grumpy, stoic way. Papa Choi destroyed SH's family so he will destroy everything that is dear to papa Choi.

Let me comment for the cute here, because I won't be able to comment on them for the next episode (too much rage-inducing scenes and WTF moments).
We get 3 bed scenes here.. All of them are cute... But we want MOAR!! And we want them with LESS clothing!! LOL
So based on their interactions, MW and JS haven't consummated their marriage yet?? How they haven't done it for 10208493th times already is beyond me! I though after that hot, passionate kiss they would book a room in nearby hotel already.. MW is hot and JS is sexy, how they can resist it..
I wish this drama only consists of their romance and cuteness.. I would watch them for 50 eps if that's the case.

The truth is less clothing could make us forget everything! What plot holes and tons of ppl?? Can't recall any!! ;-)
For a couple that had some physical contact before marriage, was found naked under a blanket right after the ceremony, kissed each other passionately after sharing a bedroom for a few days (not the bed, just the room, I know) and all that before episode 10, who stops them from the actual s-e-x? The writer? SBS? A conservative point of view since they're not officially married? Search me!

LOL! What's wrong with people's primary instincts in this drama? Secret was so much bolder in terms of its leads' sexuality. The female lead had two lovers and we were fine with it, right?
j9
July 24, 2015 at 1:49 PM
I hear ya Kanz and Kalel! Kanz -"...indeed" LOL!
But let's be real, we probably would be bored if it were ALL just about romance and cuteness. Then people would complain about that! We need a little angst thrown in there, even if its all illogical.
I would also watch our Superhero married couple of cuteness and romance for 50+ episodes if with every episode, no matter how many arrows, bullets, bombs etc. they still survive at the end of the day and give us romance and cuteness. ...also cuteness and flirtiness sprinkled throughout the day while they are battling these foils of romance and couplehood.
@kalel Yeus! less clothing! how is it that MW was trying to sneak a peak when JS was taking off her clothes in the woods behind the rock, MW stripping both of them down to keep JS warm (although that is a valid method), and JS choosing to change MW's clothes in the hospital rather than let the nurses do it, and they are going to bed in full clothing and just snuggling. (which again, I don't mind seeing)....BUT where is all the sexual tension???
MW needs to take out his man-card and take charge like he did on the courthouse steps. To Min-Woo: You can't be that timid kissing like that!!! Whatever reason that you all are trying to "wait"(and I commend you for that cause you really love her), at least show us a little sexual frustration. You're a Man!!!
No fair to tease us with a kiss like that and not come thru!:)

Hear, hear! Not fair AT ALL! You're right! But, on the other hand, Secret had tons of sexual frustration, Mask had multiple hints of sexual frustration from both mail leads in the first episodes while the plot was running smoothly. We even had a hot scene between the married couple during the first week of the drama.
Is MW a man or a teenager? He's more or less cured by now and he's in love! Doesn't he want to do more than a bit of touching and kissing? JS's obviously ready to go all the way for some time now!! ;-)

Whenever I can't understand half sister's (MY) actions, I remember mom in the beginning of this drama. It seemed to me then that Mom and Seok hoon were allies. (Maybe not completely, but I'm sure she was in on the doctor treating Min-Woo with hallucinogenic drugs.
And completely off topic, while I was typing this comment my right hand slipped one letter over on the keyboard and instead of "Min Woo" I wrote "Nub Wii." I didn't look up immediately, and then when I did I thought, "who the heck is Nub?"

THANKS LollyPip!
I wasn't as impressed with this ep (17) as with ep 15 & 16 which were awesome. But i liked ep 18 more, flaws and all. And trust me, ep 18 gets really crazy and 3x more illogical than we thought possible. This ep slows things down a bit. And perhaps i was unsatisfied bc i knew the kdrama rule: too much current happiness = a butt load of future sadness.
My fave scene was when the otp went to look at apartments and MW was playing coy in the bed w JS. Then when i found out on Soompi that the scene was an NG, i loved it even more. Kept NG's are always tons of fun to watch!!! Glad they kept it.

I looove all the MW-JS cuddle moments, too!! They're so adorkable together!! And I knew MW was aiming for a lips kiss with that request. =P I'm really happy to see that MW is reacting exactly the way we expected, being more concerned about JS than the fact she's been lying to him about her identity. I also really like how MW has embraced JS's family as his own, even planning to live together and being chummy with JH. Haha...
That punch from MW to SH's face felt so good! Sucks that SH used the JS recording to try to prevent MW from passing the attempted murder evidence to his lawyer friend... But at least MW and JS are teaming up and trying to help each other.
Dang... MY is scary!! Does she have any idea about the consequences of her action (and inaction, as in EH's case)?!?! How can you mess with people's lives by screwing up a surgery and using peanuts?!?! OMG!! She's worse and scarier than SH... At least if he's murdering someone, he has full intention and awareness of what he's doing. In MY's case, she is so clueless and it's almost as if she can't foresee the potential danger or don't care what happens as long as someone "pays for" the misery she is going through... She is a murderer!!!

Thanks for the review Lollypip!
I even held out on watching ep. 18 cause I wanted to get your thoughts and I wanted to get my thoughts out about ep. 17 without having 18 in the forefront of my mind.
I love this show for the roller coaster of emotions that you go through with each episode. And they never forget a touch of humor to break things up which is always a plus in any show I watch.
Is it just me or is JJH/MW getting more good looking with each episode? And Oh how I love me some Min Woo! He is just way too adorable and cute and sweet. (Sigh :D ) And he might as well have a sign tattooed on his forehead that says I am so in love with my wife (EH/JS). He's almost giddy about it. I don't think he has smiled this much in a single episode thus far.
I love how JS can say things that will get a little nervous/shy reaction out of him. This episode took me a little longer to watch because I think I rewound all of their cute OTP moments about 4 or 5 times each.
I've read on some other sites that some people are bothered by the cheesiness of these two, I say bring it on! I Love their "adorkableness"! I also like being able to see their interactions in bed, even if they're not "doing the do" (and yes, I'm anxiously waiting that one too - and writer Nim and PD, Don't short change us on that one!) ;) :)

It's a bittersweet episode.
MW and JS got cozy and graduated to the bed after THE kiss. Unfortunately, she lost her mom. I didn't see that coming of how she would die like that (at MY's expense). For JS, it helped that MW is by her side for emotional support.
I'd have to admit that I love how MW calls 'Byun Ji Sook-ssi', everytime he does that, I just go 'awwww'!
Has anyone noticed MW looks really natural in this episode or is it just me? His hair is less gel and has a more natural look, he is so humble and mellow and at the same time he 'glows'! Super adorable-MW. Even his wardrobe seems more relaxed as well.
Wow, MW gave Seok Hoon a long due punch in the face. That was awesome! As for MY, she is a loose canon. She needs to get herself together and stop flip flop!

I'm not sure how anyone thinks Mi yeon "indirectly" murdered someone. She deliberately lured that boy out and fed him peanuts so he couldn't participate in the transplant. Did she think people get organ transplants because they just felt like getting a new one? She's not indirectly responsible for mama's death, she's directly responsible. The only place I want to see that murderous couple is in jail. If the writers are planning on letting her off I won't be happy at all about that.

As much as I love all the cuteness, one thing that's lingering my mind is do all chaebol parents care more about the company than their kids? It has been like that in kill me heal me, high society and now here. I think Mi Yeon is more of psychopath and Seok Hon is sociopath. It's just two more episodes and so many questions. Like are the doppelgangers indeed twins? If then, how did they get separated? How did Min Woo's mom die exactly? Was Papa Choi responsible for Seok hon's dad accident? Why is Seok Hon so fixated on killing Min Woo?
Will Ji Seok die in the fire?
On the side note, how will the evil couple end? Will there be a happy future for the otp?
I don't know who's scarier between Mi Yeon and Seok Hon but by the body count, Mi Yeon totally wins.

It would be a good plot twist if Seok Hoon's hatred for the Choi family was all a misunderstanding so he basically spent most of his life hating and trying to get revenge on the wrong people. Thanks again LollyPip!
Oh that cheese!!!! Ewww and I shriek with Min Woo (see first still above) LOL... this husband and wife are made for each other, wife giving as good as she gets.
I believe that most of us have come to terms with just enjoying the show for the OTP, and the director is obviously pandering to this ... fan service galore!
As someone else pointed out, our OTP are also similar in the way they don't do anything for themselves per se, but get into action in a big way when they are out to protect a loved one. Min Woo was too inactive for too long, allowing himself to just be doped and his memories manipulated. Now we'll have to see what JS does about what happened to her mum.
I found mum's death a bit unnecessary... just the fact that she could have died should have been enough... *sob!*
And that wedding ? dream scene definitely got me worried with good reason... now that is the only version of JS's wedding we'll have with mum and dad and brother all there. It's sweet that JS's image of herself as a bride has her looking like a fresh-faced school girl rather than as the determined and more sophisticated woman she is. Unfortunately that may also be an image of a self that she'll never be able to return to as the story plays out through 3 more episodes, I believe of more melo ? than romance ? (until the very end, that is! ? :) )

But I also hope the writer doesn't forget about the plot while dishing out fan-service, even though, yes, I watch Mask for the otp!

One huge plot hole. They haven't told us WHY Seok Hoon is hell bent on killing Min Woo. I know that something unforgivable was done to Seok-hoon’s father, bug what is it, is anyone's guess.
Seok-hoon and Mi Yeon are two very different types of killers. Seok Hoon is a cold blooded murderer. He knows he kills, often plots and executes it with cold blooded efficiency. He lies to everyone but himself. He has his reasons for murder which he doesn't try to rationalize to himself after he explains why it is expieient to kill.
Mi Yeon kills people "accidentally". She knows it is wrong, but tries to rationalize it to herself, by blaming everyone but herself for her bad decisions, Mi Yeon is a delusional serial killer married to a psychopath. What a match made in heaven!

Viewers have yet to receive the official version of events on whether Eun-Ha & Ji-Sook are twins or just doppelgängers. There was a real life story in the news this week of twins separated at birth and only finding out about each other later in life that I stumbled upon:
How a Friend (and Facebook!) Helped Reunite Twin Sisters Separated at Birth: 'We Were Just Gobsmacked'

1) "Why did Mom have to die?" Kdrama laws & tradition dictate trade-offs / opportunity costs. Ji-Sook have her cake and eat it too - she can't have it both ways - meaning her happiness with Min-Woo while pretending to be Eun-Ha and her family still intact and surviving from dealing with the constant threats from the loan sharks to her not experiencing any repercussions for yielding to Seok-Hoon's scheme for her to impersonate a dead woman. The rules in kdramaland dictate and overall require certain conditions: 1) One must atone for masquerading Eun-Ha. As episode 17 pointed out, irregardless of the fact that Ji-Sook was blackmailed by Seok-Hoon; she made the decision albeit reluctantly to go along with the con. 2) The sacrifice of a family member(s) to death must occur and can even in the latter days befall on the main protagonist. Especially in melodramas, although I highly doubt Mask will reach such angst fest levels and rob us of a happy ending for OTP couple JS & MW.
2) This is the form of Seok-Hoon that we were introduced to and noticed big time when it went missing for several episodes.
3) Plot holes & fuzzy logic: I recognized some time ago that it wasn't going away. The MW & JS moments tended to outweigh the negatives. Therefore, I decided to just enjoy the 20 episode ride and to stop expecting everything to be logical. Mask certainly has its flaws, writing and all, but I've come to accept and appreciate it for what it is. An OTP with chemistry that melts you like the soft confection cotton candy balanced out with a villan couple that is well cast yet suited for each other because they're both crazy and off their rockers.
4) Again kudos for showcasing and giving us eye candy in the form of the fashion and shoes featured, the many different colors of nail polish and earrings/jewelry, etc. worn by JS & MY.
