I Remember You: Episode 9

While Hyun pieces together his past and present with a pinch of denial, our heroine takes on our new case like a boss. We’re given a real stalker, who surpasses Ji-an’s stalker level of curiosity and poses significant threats to his targets. But Ji-an is nothing short of a badass when it comes to doing her job, willing to face the filthiest of humans. Her dedication to investigating doesn’t go unnoticed, especially by an observant profiler aka her childhood frenemy turned reluctant roommate and partner.

EPISODE 9: “Stalkers”

Hyun confirms with Il-joo that he had an accomplice, but Il-joo only recognizes his accomplice by his voice. As Il-joo is escorted out, he recognizes this voice, the voice of Lawyer Jung.

In the interrogation room, Hyun drops the beads symbolizing Il-joo’s victim count and thinks to himself, “If this is Min’s doing, if it really is Min, what do I do?”

Myung-woo sees Hyun talking to Chief Hyun and attempts to eavesdrop out of curiosity. But he’s caught by Deputy Chief Kang, who orders him to scurry on his way. Then Deputy Chief Kang peeks inside and tries to do the same. Ha.

Hyun confronts Chief Hyun about Min’s death. She had told him with certainty that Min and Lee Joon-young were dead, but Hyun doesn’t quite believe it. Deputy Chief Kang enters the office and realizes Hyun’s relation to the case. He answers for Chief Hyun, confirming that she searched the whole nation but couldn’t find any traces of Lee Joon-young or Min.

But this isn’t enough for Hyun. He vows to return with more questions that will demand more answers. Deputy Chief Kang stops him and asks if Hyun still believes that Min and Lee Joon-young are still alive. Hyun turns around and nods, “Possibly.”

As Hyun walks through the office, he adds that these two are probably in his immediate vicinity. He passes Lawyer Jung, who then stops him to ask if he’s okay — he doesn’t look too well.

Hyun responds by offering to treat him out to thank him for helping Lee Jung-ha. Hyun adds that he wants to be closer with him, and Lawyer Jung takes the offer with a cold smile.

At home, Ji-an joins Hyun in watching a movie and comments that this isn’t a bad way to spend her last night here. She requests captions, since the movie is in English, but he ignores her. Ha, typical.

Ji-an later asks about Hyun’s interrogation of Il-joo, and he responds with a question: Does she believe that her father is still alive? Ji-an likes to think he is, and she asks if this is about her brother. Hyun looks surprised at her insight, and she continues by encouraging him to stay hopeful. “I like to think that the stronger you believe, the more likely it is to come true.”

Taking a swig of his beer, Hyun thinks, “No. Now, I’m afraid that he’ll be alive and that my hunch will be true.” Then he stands up and tells Ji-an to stay here until they catch the intruder. She asks what he’ll do if they never find him, but he just leaves it at that.

A woman goes on a morning run and suddenly stops to look behind her. She looks afraid as she sees a man run towards her, but it’s just Joon-ho followed by Hyun.

Joon-ho comments on how nice it is to have a running partner and shares his prediction about today being a busy day. On damp days like this, many bodies find their way to him. Hyun notes the chill in his phrasing.

The woman turns around again, sensing a presence behind her. But she ignores her suspicion and runs off, though it does seem like someone is stalking her.

The camera pans to below a bridge, where a dead body lies.

Ji-an wakes up, wondering where Hyun went, and decides to explore his bookshelf. She finds the drawings from his childhood and recognizes the double eye signature.

When she hears Hyun return, she quickly throws the sketchbook back and pretends to stretch on the bookshelf. She continues to distract him by asking what breakfast is to hide her new inkling of suspicion.

While doing the dishes, Ji-an thinks back to all the clues and Hyun’s confession at the harbor. He doesn’t know what he’s looking for, and he might not want to know. “No way,” she thinks aloud, and Hyun pokes her face with soap to wake her out of her daze.

Hyun tells her to voice her thoughts, but she continues to stare at him keeping her thoughts to herself. He pokes more soap onto her face, telling her to spill her thoughts, but she reciprocates by wiping some soap onto his face. Cute.

Lawyer Jung addresses his new client, Il-joo, and accusingly asks why he opened the boxes without his permission. Il-joo squirms back in his chair and squeaks out an apology. Lawyer Jung asks what Hyun asked him, and Il-joo tells him about confirming his last victim as Prosecutor Shin.

Flashback to the day of Prosecutor Shin’s kidnapping. Lawyer Jung enters the room and knocks Hyun unconscious. “Sorry, hyung.” Ahh it’s Min for real.

In his basement, Hyun looks at Il-joo’s hidden account and notices that the dates of the deposits are around the same dates he had returned to Korea. Could this be a coincidence? Hyun drops the account book into a box and convinces himself to forget about it.

Myung-woo goes on a blind date and shifts uncomfortably. He admits that he hasn’t been on a blind date for three years and offers to make her laugh. But the woman (the same person who was going on the morning run), Ji Hyun-sook, asks a more serious question about how to deal with a stalker.

Indebted Friend scoffs from behind when Myung-woo promises to protect her with all his power, and then he recognizes him from the pictures the Hyun gave him. Wondering if this guy is the murderer, Indebted Friend sneaks looks at him, and Myung-woo notices.

Myung-woo follows him to the bathroom and accuses him of having a criminal record. He demands a form of ID, but he comes out clean. When he returns, Hyun-sook decides that Myung-woo isn’t her best resort and leaves. A man trailing after her goes unnoticed by Myung-woo.

Hyun’s desk ends up right across from Myung-woo’s, and the two stare each other down. A murder gets reported, and finally, the team can get to work. Having been rejected, Myung-woo decides that work is everything in his life now.

At the crime scene, Joon-ho seems smug in his prediction about finding bodies today. He points out the ligature mark on the victim’s neck and how unusual it is that the blood seems to be cleaned off the body. Hyun deduces that the killer wanted to wipe away the evidence or was regretful of his crime.

Joon-ho and Eun-bok confirm seeing similar crimes, and Hyun gets excited at the possibility of a serial killer. Ji-an shushes him, warning him to stop saying things that would characterize him as a psycho. Sure enough, Team Leader Kang and Eun-bok stare at him curiously.

In the office, the investigative team piece together the clues. They gather the similar murder cases, all of which included women discovered dead a week after their kidnapping.

Hyun-sook watches TV at home, and when she goes to reach for the remote, she notices something in the drawer. It’s a camera, and she immediately calls the police. While she waits outside, she decides to call Myung-woo. But before he picks up, she hangs up and gets kidnapped into a black van.

Myung-woo seems offended that Hyun-sook would hang up on him, but then he realizes her concern about being stalked. He finds her whereabouts and searches her home for any sign of stalking.

Hyun reviews the killer’s M.O. as kidnapping women and then killing them a week later. The team notices that the time between each killing has decreased significantly. They confirm evidence of stalking in Hyun-sook’s home and prepare themselves to find the killer before their time limit of one week.

Ji-an suspects that the stalker must be the killer, and Hyun makes a snarky comment that the stalker herself should know better. Team Leader Kang wonders what this is about, and Ji-an assures him that she’s just an idol fan while forcing a smile.

Hyun-sook wakes up injured and tied to a chair in a dark abandoned site. She screams for her stalker to come out, and someone walks down the stairs. It’s a woman, innocently telling Hyun-sook to be quiet.

Ji-an takes a break with Hyun and asks why he’s working so hard all of a sudden. He admits that he’s running away from his thoughts. Team Leader Kang finds them and deflates at the sight of them together.

Myung-woo and Seung-joo interrogate the owner of the building for any information on a possible suspect. But the owner lady rejects any possibility of her involvement.

Eun-bok finds more information on the residents of the building, one in particular striking our interest: a sex offender. The owner lady makes a call to her son, asking if he took her keys again. Our investigators overhear the call, so the owner lady yells at her arriving son to run away. They chase him down and search through his apartment for evidence of stalking.

In the interrogation room, the son, Park Soo-young, claims that Hyun-sook was his girlfriend. Hyun shows him pictures of the other woman, all of which he claims were his girlfriends. But now, they’ve disappeared.

Hyun explains that Soo-young must be suffering from de Clerambault’s Syndrome, with which one falls obsessively in love with another. He believes every small gesture is one of love, so if he did harm these women in any way, he would only remember as an expression of love.

There must be an accomplice, but Soo-young won’t tell. Ji-an volunteers to interrogate him, since our suspect may be more vulnerable in front of a woman. Team Leader Kang considers cross-dressing Eun-bok (ha), but Ji-an takes one for the team so they can find Hyun-sook as soon as possible.

Ji-an enters with a drink for Soo-young and a friendly smile. He sees right through her act and accuses her for trying to seduce him. Ji-an admits to this, and he tells her to stop because she’s not his type. But Ji-an powers through and brings her seat next to his. Holding his hand, she asks for his help, since his girlfriend’s life is at stake.

After some hesitation, Soo-young grabs Ji-an’s hand and contradicts his previous statement: She is his type. Ugh, ew. Ji-an asks where Hyun-sook is, and he claims that she’s in his room. He tells her that when he brags about his girlfriends, they’re taken away in a black van by a man with a star on his head. When he hesitates to tell her more, Ji-an reaches out to tilt his face towards her to continue.

Ji-an washes her hands in the bathroom with soap and then with soap again. Hyun waits for her outside, and she admits that she can’t seem to wipe the grimy feeling off her hands. So he takes her hands from behind and holds them in his. “It should be a bit better now.”

The investigators search through Soo-young’s files and find a folder for each of his victims, except for the first one. They find upload records, and we find out that Park Soo-young had uploaded video files of these women online. So it’s possible that Soo-young merely uploaded the files, and the real killer is a viewer.

Unfortunately, the website belongs to an overseas server and there are thousands of members, meaning all the members would become suspects. It would be impossible to find our killer.

Lawyer Jung thinks back to Hyun’s invitation for dinner and decides to make the first move. He calls and suggests somewhere quiet, like Hyun’s place. After a moment of hesitation, Hyun agrees to the arrangement, and they hang up. Both brothers tap their fingers in anticipation.

While everyone sleeps in the office, Hyun and Ji-an continue to work on the case. Hyun has figured out the general area that our killer resides based on the trail that the women are left in. The killer must pass by these sites en route to work, and probably has a second car so the SUV is hidden away.

But from a profiler’s perspective, Hyun finds the killer’s M.O. unusual. All these victims suffered a blow to the head, which isn’t characteristic of the rich confident person — like Yang Seung-hoon — they’re searching for. Something feels off, but Hyun needs to leave to prepare for his guest.

Hyun cleans and prepares food for Lawyer Jung while Ji-an tirelessly works in the office. Team Leader Kang asks if she’s found anything, and Ji-an discusses the possibility of their first victim’s boyfriend as their killer. He matches the description in Hyun’s profiling, so Team Leader Kang suggest that they go pay him a visit with the excuse of paying their respects.

On their way, Team Leader Kang shares his embarrassment because of all of recent violence towards women. He’s ashamed of all the men who have injured women and of himself for not being able to catch the intruder that harmed Ji-an.

He promises to find him as soon as possible, but Ji-an — thinking back to Hyun’s offer to let her stay in his home until the intruder is caught — assures him that it’s no rush. He calls it nonsense and vows to capture this suspect.

Team Leader Kang and Ji-an gawk at the boyfriend’s large estate and confront him about the serial killings. He refuses to cooperate, having dealt with the grief and misery of complying with the police when his girlfriend was first found. He tells them to contact his lawyer for future reference.

Lawyer Jung arrives at Hyun’s home and takes a moment to take everything in. Hyun watches from behind as we see Lawyer Jung’s cold façade melt and transform into Min. Min’s eyes fill with nostalgia, and he watches his hyung prepare food. He imagines little Hyun smiling at younger Min.

Ji-an seems deflated at their flat rejection, but she notices the license plate of a van peeking out from a half-opened garage. Team Leader Kang makes a call to check this license plate, and Ji-an sneaks inside the garage. She notices the star at the top of the window and recalls Soo-young’s statement about the man with the star on his head. This is it.

Just as Lawyer Jung offers to help with preparing the meal, the doorbell rings. Joon-ho enters, but he stops in his tracks when he sees Lawyer Jung. Hyun craftily explains that he invited them both since they know each other and he had an abundance of food. Joon-ho and Lawyer Jung icily stare at each other, unsettled by this unexpected meeting.

Team Leader Kang calls for back up, but the garage door starts to open. A large man attacks Team Leader Kang, and Ji-an joins the fight. They’re both thrown to the ground, but Team Leader Kang gets back up. Just as the attacker skillfully takes out his knife, Ji-an finds the gun in Team Leader Kang’s bag and shoots an empty in the air.

She points the gun at the attacker, but someone from behind smacks Ji-an on her head. It’s the lady who shushed Hyun-sook in the abandoned building. Team Leader Kang yells for Ji-an, but he gets stabbed and falls to the ground. Ji-an is carried into the car while an injured Team Leader Kang reaches out helplessly.

COMMENTS

I freaking love Ji-an. She’s perceptive and intelligent in her own way, with an independence that I think so many heroines could benefit from. She jumps into a situation, a fight at her own expense. Ji-an is acutely aware that she’s responsible for herself, and that awareness shows in her assertive behavior. With the creepy stalker, the attacker who was twice (or three times) her size, and previous cases, Ji-an doesn’t hesitate to execute her role to the best of her ability. The depth and strength of her character shines through in this episode, and I do hope that she continues to receive proper recognition.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate the cute, yeah? The bickering and blatant ignoring are now just staples in the relationship, which given other characters wouldn’t be that exciting, but these two make the disrespect into some fun chemistry. Not going to lie, I cringed when Hyun took Ji-an’s hand to get rid of the stalker grime because it was so unlike them. But again, not going to lie, I rewatched that scene a couple times. I think it just means a lot more coming from Hyun, who has high standards when it comes to emoting and caring. While this episode didn’t capitalize too much on the roommate situation, the soap was a hopeful foreshadowing of what’s to come. More cute everyday things and inconveniences from the roomies please!

The show did a quick job at acknowledging Lawyer Jung as Min, which I prefer over dragging out the reveal when most of us have figured it out already. This also means we get more time looking into Min’s transformation into Lawyer Jung, who now seem like completely different people. And to some extent, they are. The environment that Min supposedly grew up in starkly contrasts with the world Hyun grew up knowing. I do wonder how much Min’s murderous tendencies were influenced by Lee Joon-young, and if his misunderstanding that his hyung abandoned him was self-taught. If so, it’s a very simple and tragic reality to live in.

I won’t argue that Min’s perspective on Hyun’s abandonment is unrealistic, since I believe that Min has ingrained this fact in his reality, and reality is relative. He’s brainwashed this reality into his mind, erasing all the complexities of their situation. The brothers were victims of circumstance, one simply luckier than the other. I see their abnormal tendencies being paralleled every so often, which makes me more sympathetic towards Min. I think it’s this guilt that Hyun is struggling to overcome — that it easily could have been him in Min’s shoes. But Min isn’t the little boy Hyun knew from his childhood, and I don’t see either of them cutting any slack when pitted against each other. Let the tragic bromance begin.

Does anyone else think that the pacing has suddenly slowed considerably?

Hmm not for me, I'm loving every minute of this drama...I find it's more engaging with each episode. The suspense and cliffhanger at the end of this one is good. Same goes for episode 10...can't wait to see what happens in episode 11 :)

Maybe it's not the pacing. Something has changed though. Something substantial with the characters that makes this episode feel very different in tone and style than earlier episodes.

Really? I actually thought it had picked up! Now we've got Hyun, Min and creepy coroner all dancing around each other, Hyun's solidly knit into the police force, and we're starting to dig into the mystery that led to Dad's death and Min's vanishing. So all the pieces are moving but they're not stagnating.

I love how each and every criminal story line gives light to what is going on with our central characters. Maybe I'm not too perceptive, but I don't see the changes in tones or pacing...if this drama continues like this, it easily comes down as my favorite drama this year so far!

I love how the writer reveal the myths one by one throughout the whole drama, rather than rush them all in the last two episode like lots other suspense dramas, which makes the pace stable and keeps audiance hooked

Hi Susan

The pacing did not seem to be different to me, ... but you mentioned tension. I'm not sure if it is a question of execution or whether it's the story.

I was thinking that we have reached a plateau point when almost all the different elements have come together in readiness for something. Maybe a waiting lull before the storm?

What we've guessed has been confirmed, Hyun is positioning his suspects so that he can observe them better and the new case seems at first to be adding nothing much to our knowledge of Hyun or Ji An or impacting the main mystery that drew Hyun in.

Some things are being introduced but not yet gone into in detail... such as Ji An's suspicions about the double eye drawing. And we only have the beginning of another meeting of our 3 geniuses. Moments like the morning run just to give Joon Ho the chance to sound more psycho without any real build up may also have added to the lack of oomph.

When thinking back, it seems that a lot did happen, but it was understated in some way. I feel however a certain tension, a waiting for something to happen. But this has perhaps not been played up as much as it could have been. :)

It might be something else I'm picking up on - a change of writer or director or editor or something...

Just like what you stated, a lull before the storm. Because for the past episodes, the cases always has something to do with the main plot and this time, it somehow dropped a big hint that Min might have killed his own father. This is just all a guess based on the conversation between Ji An and Mr. Coroner at the hospital.

I don't know, I just can't wait for Monday to come!

Episode 10 While Ji An was hospitalized and Mr Coroner visited her while Hyun concluded after talking to the suspect's girlfriend that maybe she was just influenced by the psychological problem of the suspect and thus concluded that maybe Min has the same case. But Mr Coroner doesn't think so.... Maybe he was just stating about the case and I just interpreted it that way HIHIHIHI

slowed pacing?!?hmmmmm I don't think so... :)

Maybe it's because now we know who Min is? That was a big part of the guessing games in the earlier episodes. But for me, other things are picking up and it's getting more tense and exciting.

Mmmmm...... I don't think that's it. I've known who min is for at least 4 episodes. I can't quite put my finger on it, but something is definitely different. And less tension inducing....

I find the leads story is kinda of getting less interesting since ep. 8. But we get to know more about the Attorney Jung and LJH so at least there is something that still keep me interested in this drama. Oh and the policeman Myung-woo never failed to make me laugh in this ep.

Just hoping this pace won't be for long 'cause I'm not keen to see a quick and make-no-sense ending to such a wonderfully written drama that we hardly get from kdrama.

Ah, I love everything about this show, up to and including the silly little nuances in the detective team: "Dave!" "It's DAVID" / Team Leader being both a doof and a pretty good cop / trying to cross-dress the prettyboy detective... I really appreciate they're sticking with the characterizations of the individual cops, even though they're very background. Ha, and it made me laugh went Hyun went all excited-Sherlock about finally getting a murder, though I do wonder if he's intentionally acting a little more psychotic when coroner's around to hear it?

I totally thought Min was a stone-cold psycho but now that creepy coroner's in the mix, he's coming across as a lot more conflicted. It's heartbreaking to get glimpses of jealousy every time Hyun pays attention to someone else, especially when he's ready to go racing after Ji An with poor Min thinking back to being so neglected.

And to think we were worried about knowing who the "bad guys" were too early in the run...

Hah. I love how Myung-woo is so insistent on the Dave thing, and Hyeon's total nonchalance/snub back at Myung-woo. d=

I kinda suspect that Hyun's excitement about the murder case is more because it's a temporary diversion from his uneasy worries about Min possibly turning into a murderer.

I really love that Eun-bok is so invested in the escalating corrections. "DavID." "It's Dave-ID." "I told you it's DAVID!" It cracks me up because he's muttering it in the background, but definitely makes himself heard every time. Hee. Ah, I hope he's not a creepy stealth murderer, because I like him.

Of course, I like all of them and at least some of them will be murderers, so there's that.

And yeah, I think Hyun's excitement at the precinct is the same kind of Sherlockian hatred of boredom and excitement about a new puzzle, but the way he said something pretty psychopathic quite loudly at the crime scene seemed... staged to me, like he really wanted the coroner to hear it? He probably actually feels that way too, but he's usually not randomly loud about it.

Me too, dramallama. I freaking love Cha Ji-an so much! Team Leader Kang is so cute being jealous of Ji-an drinking water with Hyun without him, teehee. Does Hyun's hair being down means something, because yunno, baddies with hair down always means they have or wanted to be nice, but it's not like Hyun is evil anyway tho.

I'm loving this show and I am loving Ji-an. She is amazing. She doesn't see herself as a small woman so she shouldn't get involved in a fight, she sees herself as a cop and a human being with a responsibility to help others. I love her. And yes the pacing has changed, but that is because our characters are changing as well. I loved the hand-holding scene. Yes it may have seemed out of character for them, but Hyun knew she was having a hard time and he is willing to open himself up more to be there for her when she needs it. And Lawyer Jung is a great, tragic character. When his face fell while looking around his old house, and then seeing him and his brother as kids again was just heart-wrenching. He is in many ways still an emotionally scarred little boy. And did anyone notice that when he took Prosecutor Shin his clothes looked just like Lee Joon-young's clothes on the night he killed their dad? Creepy! I am thoroughly looking forward to seeing how this all plays out.

Ji-An: “I know you’re looking for your brother,... don’t worry, you will definitely find him….” Hyeon surprised that she noticed and guessed correctly. Then, its his turn to surprise her, laying his hands gently on her shoulder, “I am saying, to stay here, until we catch the terrorist.” “What if we can’t catch him forever?” Ji-An spoke aloud what she actually wish…. Hyeon’s silent is an opening for “anything” possible, isn’t it? The Hyeon in the past; upon hearing such will change his mind and immediately tell her, to pack and go tomorrow…. But the past 3 days a lot has happened, some hearts has melted, some wound healed, some hope kindled.
This show has many little moments of “hand-talking” as “skin-ship” development, just like in Healer, the Writer let the Hands do the healing, the comforting, not so much of kissing, but a little holding of hands…
After using her ‘charm’, palm-cup Park So Yong’s face (the fatty stalker) to, she felt that stink of shame when she saw Hyeon, immediately withdrawn her hands behind, knowing the one man she dying to hold saw all that thru the CCTV, won’t even dare look at him: “I’m still getting the chills. This feelin won’t go away.” He put his hand over hers; “the feeling will be lessened.” So Confident! Smiled as he stared straight into her eyes, no more teasings…
“oh, that’s right. That feeling is alot less.” She admit that that really helps, a lot-lot-lot less…
both smile … his acceptances was laid on her. Liked the way Writer uses simple hands gestures to replaced cheesy words, this is just how Hyeon communicate, a little tug of her hair, a pat on her head or shoulder, a film grab of her weakened hands…

I noticed, isn’t it a cross bracket he’s wearing when he holds her hands… the cross was like horizontal along the line of his wrist. Guess the writer could like to portray Hyeon as someone believing in the existence of God, a Creator whom he will seek strength to curb that bad wolf within and bring out more of that good wolf He has created in him, a Creator that will bring justice to pass… a Creator that will all need to face for whatever sin one committed in life…

I love Jian too! She's badass without everybody noticing she's badass, and she's not melodramatic or super ambitious or overly optimistic, or any of those annoying things that drama female leads usually are. I would love to be her friend, minus the messiness.

I liked that Hyun had enough respect for her to not object to her interrogating the icky guy, although I would have enjoyed Eunbok in drag.

That's what I loved so much about the hold holding scene, post-stalker-interview. He respects her doing what she has to for her job, but also helps comfort her when she needs it. I loved how this moment showed so many things about how Hyon has grown to appreciate and care for JiAn.

I like the scene where Min returns to his childhood home and flits from cold to nostalgic (sorta sad). Park BoGum was so good.

I remember first seeing him at work in the movie Roaring Currents where I thought he was a little green. Come to think of it, was that on purpose - since his character was a little naïve and righteous? If it was, wow.

That scene was beautiful. i loved that scene trick where they panned the whole look-and-look-away between Hyun and Min. It was perfect, even the precision with which Hyun turned back.

Man how crazy is that dinner!! AHHHHH.

Also I wonder if Hyun texted Min the wrong address or not. I love the repetition of that, and it was deftly done if that turns out to be the case (and not exaggerated to death), but I also wonder if that trick would work on Min. On one hand, maybe he would bypass the text since he's sure to commit that house to memory. On the other, he's so sharp, there's a good chance he'd catch it.

The funnest thing about these three is that I'm never totally sure who knows the most. It's so fun to watch.

Yes! I was wondering about that too. Since Hyun's quite cynical of everyone, it would make perfect sense for him to 'test' Min.

This episode is just laying the groundwork for the next. Anyway, does anyone else find the scenes with the psychopaths together super boring? I enjoy their individual scenes; they are all brilliant at acting and both PBG and CWY managed to creep me out the last couple of episodes (PBG when he was questioning the corpse dumping guy and CWY when he was confronting the female accomplice). However, when they are together the effect doesn't multiply. What a pity...

I don't find either Lee Joon-Ho (Lee Joon-Young) or Jung Sun-Ho (Min) remotely scary. And the 'romance' between Lee Hyun and Cha Ji-An has no tension. And Lee Hyun's character is a lot less strong and enigmatic now.

Maybe that's why I'm starting to feel like something has deflated.

Oddly, enough, it's Min's extra rosy lips that creep me out. It's something sinister in his immaculate appearance--the aforementioned lips, the perfect white teeth, the airbrushed looking skin... And he never smiles with his eyes. He is what I imagine real sociopaths to be like.

Joon-mo seems more pervy at this point. It's like he's going for that Hannibal Lectrer (sp?) creep factor. But he's giving off more pedophile neighbor vibes at this point for me.

LOL 'pervy' is the perfect word. Joon-mo has something voyeuristic about him--like in his job for sure but also everything else. Even though Hyun set up this twisted observational dinner-game, Joon-mo is probably getting the most pleasure out of the set up.

Oh god no, I love the scenes with the psychopaths together. I don't know exactly what's going on with them, but each of them are clearly testing the others out on many different levels, it's totally fascinating.

The coroner is just steadily creepy, doing weird creepy mundane things and then extremely creepy things intentionally. And then with Min I'm really enjoying the way his seemingly binary switch (charismatic lawyer vs. dead-eyed snake) is starting to expand into other flavors: jealous, wounded, worried, uncertain, all the feelings he's having to deal with now that Hyun is being so deliberately open with him.

There's not much plot happening when the three of them are together, I guess, but I feel like they're laying a lot of historical groundwork that will make later reveals make a lot more sense than if it was a typical Scooby Doo-style "this one was the bad guy all along!"

These scenes with Min and Joon Ho always bore the hell out of me. Well, except for that part in episode 10 which I won't spoil. It's nice that they don't take up too much time. I just don't get people's fascination at watching/showing twisted, immoral minds at work, they're all the same to me.

Thanks @dramallama!

I felt the increasing signs of Team Leader's interest in Ji An cute and organic. I like that it's introduced early and that it's a character point that is not suddenly forgotten until needed but that we see a growing interest. He was almost like a little boy going out for a treat when he stuck that post it note and went out to investigate with Ji An.

I've also liked how the characters remain true to how they were portrayed from the beginning, and yes, how even the side characters are not just flat and forgettable, but how they show personality, initiative and ability.

My heart aches for Hyun in his fears about his brother. He is beginning to realize and feel that if he could have stepped in earlier, maybe, if Min was alive, he'd be OK (as in not-likely-to-be-a-killer) and is beginning to question himself, whether he could have done more. This is a brother who took care of his younger sibling for some years, spending so much time together and even probably covering for him if it was indeed Min who used to kill animals. Considering that he had moved on to killing people, perhaps because Hyun was not there to stop him, is a terrible thought. The way he enthusiastically sped off to another case highlighted how much he preferred to be active and thinking about something else.

And what I really appreciate about what Hyun chooses to do for Ji An, is that contrary to his preference for keeping others at a distance, he is taking the trouble to be caring, even to the extent of deliberately holding her hand to ward off 'yuckiness', and this is when just last episode he was upset with her for holding his hand. LOL! And before that, it was she who was the one to grab his hand to shake it (then that Darcy moment!).

So this physical contact initiation of Hyun's is progress in Hyun's going back to being more caring, (and maybe a little warmer too), and although low-key, is swoonworthy when we consider that he did not like Ji An to begin with. So what I want to see as each episode progresses, are more indications of his attentiveness towards her and how he is drawn (even against his will, but probably less so now) to let her into his heart as he has let her into his home.

I think Hyun's behavior is organic. He's very distant with most people, but he isn't opposed to being friendly with a select few, so it isn't like he has a complex about liking people. Consider Jung-ha, and how immediately he was nice to him. Essentially, I think the core of Hyun's character is that he's a big brother. I'm an eldest sister. If I see somone hurting, I'll first try to make it better without questionining my own motives. Without admitting it, he likes Ji-an. With a lack of self-awareness of how it looks, he tries to comfort her by holding her hand. It doesn't have to be a brotherly feeling--it's just instinct.

#chajianisbae

for the hand holding part, i'm debating with myself on whether it was out of character or not. Because, yeah, it was mushy (and lovely/anticipated)

However, Hyun always hits on Ji An. Like. Always.

Hand holding, putting the soap on her face, staying at her place, putting her hair behind her ear...

Even in episode four, remember? When he got close to her as a "thanks" for her support? Maybe we just don't read it as it is because it seems incongruous with his stiff, curt character. But yeah, Ji An rarely initiates any of the flirting between them.

NOW THAT HYUN IS OUT OF THE WAY, JI AN.

There's something off about Lawyer Jung being Min. What if his memories were hacked (like in Hyde, Jekyll and I) since there's no evidence of him being adopted? Also there's Choi Eun-bok who's an orphan and there was that episode where he didn't tel Lee Hyeon he was on the crime scene first.

I really find the drama intriguing because even as the plot progresses, it still keeps me guessing.

I'm really invested in everyone's backstories now, and Park Bo Gun plays Jeong/Min so well, I'm super anxious for his whole why-did-my-brother-abandon-me confusion and turmoil to be resolved properly. There was that slight excitement in his expression when Hyeon finally offered dinner, the wistful, nostalgic expression when he was looking at his old home and remembering life with hyung, and utter disappointment when his precious alone time got disrupted by Joon-ho's presence. It really troubles me though, that the corpse deliveries to Il-joo is parallel to Hyeon's visits to Korea. Does that mean that Min does it as a way of seeking attention? (But then, with such a 'clean' MO, it's not likely that alarm would be raised in time for the Korean police to ask for Hyeon's assistance.)

It's probably a long shot, but I hope that all four of them (the two psychos, one potential psycho, and the psycho's stalker) will somehow end up as friends at the end. Maybe the law will catch up with the two murderers, but maybe there'll be some sort of understanding between them.

That lady accomplice has her eerie expression spot-on! It's warped, but I think I prefer eerie criminals to the brawny ones.

I'd love more cute/tender moments between Ji-an and Hyeon, please! So glad he's offered her to stay longer. Bet he'll be slightly irritated when that eventually gets solved d=

PS. Does this also mean Il-joo will die soon? Min's gotta clean up, right?

Right now we are not sure yet if Min really is a murderer but each minute points to him being one. The show has given us hints aplenty on his psycho ways eg. dead cats, strange drawings, trapped in a car with murderer, his voice with Prosecutor Shin dead in a box & the hired attacker on Ji An. It's hard to dismiss him or have sympathy for him.

It seems he has it in his genes because dead cats and lying about brother's drawing started before meeting his dad's murderer. It is going to be really sad if he kills just to get bro's attention which might explain the time co-incidence. Like the story last episode, would it have been different if that person actively seek out to defy his own genes. But in Min's case, whose genes has he got? or is it Lee JY's doing?

I think Min had murderous tendencies from the beginning (the nature side of the nature-nurture argument), but, I think it was the dad and not just Joon-mo (I'm assuming he's the dad's killer, but I can't think of the name) that cultivated that side of him.

It's not a sane, loving household where the father decides to lock one of his children in the basement. He brought his work home with him when they were children. He let (made) Hyun essentially function in the role of his spouse--taking care of the cooking, cleaning, bills, and Min.

And we still don't know how their mother died, except that it was violent and traumatic.

You're so right. That family had a messed up start. In hindsight, I also love Min as this neglected/forgotten member of the family. In the first episode, I was so caught up with what dad was doing to Hyun, I barely considered that this situation would severely affect little bro too. What a creepy combination this family had. Especially with Hyun taking the mom's role.

Hyun obviously suffered from the perverse attention his father showed him (locking in basement, spending time with him to help him/the world/prolly assuage his guilt at locking his son in a basement)--but neglect in the basest form isn't exactly what he had to deal with. Imagining Min's life then during Hyun's lock down period was probably a lot of terrible dinners in a messy house. Who knows if dad even bathed the kid, what with surrogate-mother-Hyun in the dungeon. And I'm sure dad was thinking about Hyun even when with Min.

I feel like that neglect is a huge complex for Min. We see it all the time now with his focus on getting Hyun to remember him. Even Ji-an parallels that a little with the way she used to suspect Hyun but continuously disregarded Min (earlier on).

I love this differing experience of two brothers. They're both chilling people--I mean, Hyun brings the younger bro he clearly loves to the childhood home they shared and then surprises bro with his kidnapper...what an incredibly cold person. It's kinda awesome. I shiver, but with respect. Their experiences have plenty of tragedy to account for the whole 'creating a monster' thing, but that's complicated by Min's general violent tendencies from the beginning (assuming he was the dog-killer. God that's terrible).

Even though I love the pace of this show, I do kinda wish it'd be longer, just to get a lot of Min/Hyun/Joon Young. What a dynamic. I love the anger Min has with Joon, who might've been the terrible surrogate brother he never wanted, and was yet another person who took him away from his mother-bro. The hatred in the glare he looked at Joon Mo with was like palpable, when he intruded on the moment Min's been waiting for. What deja vu.

Ah sorry, wrote way too much again. This show gets me so excited! ^^

It's unacceptable that Dad being a psychologist himself made such a serious maligned diagnosis on his son based on hearsay and taking such drastic action of 'curing' him. But having a family member murdered might possibly have affected his extreme decision.

And his action has possibly resulted in a second murder in the family (how morbid can a family tale gets!), that's getting himself killed. Wonder who could have a hand in killing Hyun's mom, she seemed to know the person and his/her violent tendency.

My most favourite part of this show has to be the leading lady. Love that she doesn’t need help every time she is confronted with a situation, she is smart enough to access a situation and make a move, plus she isn’t melodramatic. Jung Nara is brilliant in her portrayal of Ji-an, she make her real! She plays Ji-an as a no nonsense, grounded, yet hopeful character, love her acting!
Coming to the story, the murder of the week is well written and connects with the core story brilliantly.
I know many find the romance forced, but I find the romance and the way the OTP show their affection to each other very natural and relatable. Both SIG and JN can express a lot just by the few looks that pass between the two(great acting again!!)
Love that the show makes me think!!I have 10 odd scenarios that could be the core story..wonder what the writers will come up with
Thanks again for the fantastic recap, cant wait to read your thoughts on ep 10

I'm getting kicks from Hyun and Ji An's scenes together. The soap scene was both uncharacteristic and characteristic of Hyun, something I think we all forgot is how Hyun is a nurturer, maybe it's nature or maybe because he's used to taking care of his brother and his father.

I think he's the type of person that needs someone to care for and now he's slowly coming back to that by having Ji An by his side. Hyun is capable for great love (and I mean love in the general sense), being a child and taking care of his family is something that someone with a loving bent can do without resenting it.

This show does a great job of hiring people who can be creepy as hell.

Yes! totally agree about Hyun being a nurturer. In the early episodes it was shown that he was solely responsible for his brother and most other things around the house. In the interim years he probably had no one so he retreated into his shell. now that he's got someone in his home again, that side of him seems to be emerging again.

Actually if i think about it, Hyun comes across as the kind of person other people think of as cold/rude/brash/uncaring, but then there are reams of studies and articles that show such people to be more sensitive, aware - self and others - than the average individual.

I think this is a show that can well be extended for a second season as a per weekly case crime procedural with central mystery if they want but doubt it'd happen.
The brothers scene was heartbreaking. You're right. Reality is relative. For Min, even though he acts like a grown-up, he is still holding on to the childish reality of being abandoned by his Hyung although it was beyond their collective control. They were kids.

It's messed up, but I'm kinda hoping Ji-An will play a big part with these brothers! Not exactly like a 'choosing' scenario, but just by figuring out the Min/Lawyer Jung/Serial Killer story. She's already cottoning on (maaaaybe more so than Hyun knows? Who can say with that guy) so I can see awesome pressure/tension there if Hyun tries to turn away from this. I'm not sure he will, but he must want to.

@asmara and @sel (a big hug back!! :) )

Yes you have a few points here and I was thinking along the same lines in Comment 18 above.

Hyun was the 'parent' and caregiver of little Min as well as his playmate. He feels responsible for how his brother would turn out. This was likely why he was so taken with his talk with Joon Yeong as a child... to find out if his brother would turn out like him because he was already hurting animals.

Hyun's instinctive reaction is to cover for and protect Min... in the same way that Jung Ha protected the murderous 'friend'. He himself knows that he will have to fight not his brother, but himself, in knowing what to do if he finds his brother. A foreshadowing, as you say, but not a certainty.

On the one hand, Hyun did really start off a search for Min, but after not having heard of/from him, and after investigating more murders and realizing that the one who 'invited' him back with that drawing in the first murder could have been Min, he is probably hoping he will not find Min. He will not want to deal with making a decision... to turn him in or to hide his crimes.
If Min is really a killer, the saddest resolution is that he may have to die or be incarcerated for life, in order to resolve the endless murders to gain his brother's attention.

And about that situation of having to choose between Ji An and Min, it is absolutely possible. Min himself, who is already jealous of Ji An's influence in Hyun's life, is the most likely one to engineer this. Save Ji An or sacrifice Ji An, might be the new game to engage his brother in, so that he will at least have his undivided attention for a while.

I loved this episode and episode 10 so much, especially how we're seeing Hyun's defenses go down ever so slightly (but surely!!) The hand scene between the leads was so intimate for me, it reminded me of the wondrous hand porn in Healer XD

Also, woah, the guy who played the peeping tom was ridiculously creepy.

Jang Nara is killing this role, and it's a good thing her character is well-written. It shows even more in Episode 10- how proactive she is (haha if u have watched the ep I think you'll know what I'm saying ;))

I watched Reply 1997 in 2 days and I immensely enjoyed it. IRY was my first Seo In Guk drama although I've seen him in No Breathing before. Let me act as little profiler and talk about motive of murders as for Min and LJY cases. well yeah maybe most scary stalker out there is Min! He is clearly committing murders just to get his brother attention and to cover up reasons may cause Lee Hyeon to hate him for what? Min is the one who actually benetifts from their mother and father deaths. He simply hate anybody who comes between them. LJY most likely trying to separate child's from their parents so as they growing up he is stalking them he sees them experimental objects and he thinks he did right thing and being proud of what he had done.

funny even though the drama not doing well in the ratings, Jang Nara seems to still be getting a lot of attention for her playing of Ji An in the online press.

Park Bo-Gum is the best new thing. He emotes so well! Also he is in character is spot on. This is my second drama after Cantabile Tomorrow and I think he is one heck of an actor because when I first saw him in Cantabile Tomorrow, I thought he is indeed a Conductor/ Cello player/ Classical music student who was roped in to play a role in the drama since his acting was so un-actor like...meaning without too much extra nuances...subtle and very real like how a regular person without acting background will act... I think he is a very good actor to look forward too because he doesn't over-act or over-do his parts...

In think Min love his brother more than his father, because their father was bush with work and Hyun was the one who actually took care of him. Hyun was not just big brother but also mother to Min

Yesssss Ji an! Finally a female lead that's a badass but a grounded one. She's a capable cop, definitely not just a pretty face in the special interrogation team. She does her job wonderfully to the highest level of competence and does not need the male lead or an her colleagues to deliberately throw their bodies in to protect her.

The show did a quick job at acknowledging Lawyer Jung as Min, which I prefer over dragging out the reveal when most of us have figured it out already. This also means we get more time looking into Min’s transformation into Lawyer Jung, who now seem like completely different people.

Agree

I appreciate the writer doesn't keep us guessing until the end and only explains what happened in the last 2 eps, which allows more time to go deeper into the main topic of the drama-how someone turns into a monster, born or made? Although I'm not 100% sure, I think the forensic guy is LJY, as we can see the three psychopaths highlighted on 2 posters released before premiere. The writer didn't make much effort to hide it. Of course it would be a bonus if there's a bigger boss behind all this or LJY is actually someone else
