Mask: Episode 7
by LollyPip
What a sweet smile! It seems like every time Min-woo takes one step forward, Ji-sook takes two steps back, in an effort to guard herself against becoming attached and losing her focus to save her family. But it won’t be that easy, as Min-woo becomes more and more endearing the more he falls for her. Unfortunately he’s not the only one, and while Min-woo’s feelings seem to be healing his mental issues, Seok-hoon’s conflicted emotions are beginning to make him reckless, and even more dangerous than before.
EPISODE 7: “A Chest You Can Cry On”
After passing out in the car, Ji-sook wakes up in Min-woo’s bed with him smiling down at her. Min-woo quickly tells her not to misunderstand what happened, that he only took their clothes off to ward off hypothermia, but that goofy grin and his admission to even taking off their underwear says otherwise. Life or death, you know.
Okay now he’s protesting too much, comparing her to a cold rock that he was just trying to warm up. He nods Maid Yeon-soo in with some porridge for Ji-sook, ordering her to get better soon so she can pay him back for saving her. Seriously dude, the self-satisfied grin is totally giving you away — you’re obviously enjoying this.
Awww, he even offers to feed her, but Ji-sook sobers up and reminds him that this is just a business relationship, though she doesn’t look too happy about it. And for once she can’t deflate Min-woo, who just says he wants her to get better before leaving her alone to eat.
Seok-hoon watches all this from his hidden camera, and the more he thinks about finding Min-woo and Ji-sook naked in that car, the angrier he grows. Once Ji-sook is alone he goes into her room, ostensibly to bring her a gift of ginseng tea, and congratulates her on her success of getting physically close to Min-woo.
She says he’s got the wrong idea, and it was totally innocent, but he scoffs at that. When she insists he blows up, and says that if it was really that pure, she should take off her mask. He leans in to whisper that he saved her, not Min-woo — she wouldn’t even be here if not for him.
Ji-sook isn’t scared, and says that she doesn’t need him, because all he ever does is threaten her. Good girl. Seok-hoon says she should think again, and opens the ginseng box to reveal that it’s bursting with money. It’s enough to pay off her father’s debt in full.
Mi-yeon walks in just then, and Seok-hoon slaps on his friendly face and says he’s just here to bring Ji-sook some tea. Mi-yeon doesn’t look like she’s buying it, and her warning to be careful of accidents sounds more like a threat than a worried sister-in-law.
Ji-sook goes to the bank to wire the money to her family, but their accounts have all been closed. As she thinks what to do, another customer recognizes her — oh gross, it’s the jerk from the reunion who tried to pay her for sex. He follows her to the parking lot and calls her name, noting that she looks around, but he just makes note of her license plate.
Seok-hoon and Mi-yeon talk about their as-yet-unsuccessful attempts to have a baby, and Seok-hoon decides that it’s not yet time to take any drastic measures. When Mi-yeon objects he just stops the car in the street, and takes the blame for causing her upset by making her suspicious that he was having an affair with Eun-ha. Wait, you mean your actual affair with Eun-ha?
He’s angry, and asks why she didn’t let him go when he wanted a divorce. He reminds her that he married her for love and no other reason, saying that it’s her decision if she wants to stay together now or not.
Ji-sook doesn’t have any luck getting the money to her family, so she decides to try finding Director Shim herself. She finds someone to offer to pay him directly, but this makes Shim nervous when the man doesn’t want to say who his client is, and a quick look around tips Shim off to her presence.
Shim and his minion follow her out of the café, and they nearly catch Ji-sook when she loses a shoe. She runs up a flight of stairs and throws her show down as a decoy, and it’s enough of a distraction to get her out of there, for now.
The reunion sleazebag tracks down the owner of the car Ji-sook was driving, and of course when he hears it belongs to a chaebol, he assumes Ji-sook is his mistress. Coincidentally he’s got a business meeting with Min-woo tomorrow, and plans to use this information as leverage.
Min-woo is busy terrorizing his new employees… but he’s not yelling about work, he’s yelling about Ji-sook, ha. He asks all three of the office gossips about marriage, trying to get some advice on how to proceed with his wife, but declares all of their tips a waste of time.
Once he’s alone though, he gets, I swear, little-girl-giggly at the last bit of advice to tell Ji-sook he loves her three times a day. How are you so cute, sir?
Chang-soo sets up a huge spread of fancy food for Ji-sook on Min-woo’s orders, and HAHAHA, Min-woo calls to have Chang-soo tell Ji-sook that he absolutely does not love her. Isn’t that the first sign of love, when you try to convince yourself you’re NOT in love? Chang-soo actually titters as he reports this to Ji-sook, and the cheeky devil supposes that Min-woo probably said that because he does love her.
Ji-sook hears Chang-soo’s stomach growl, and invites him to eat with her. He only gives the slightest of protests before digging in to all that yummy food, and Ji-sook has a moment where she remembers feeding her younger brother — aw, I love it, she can be Chang-soo’s noona!
Ji-sook asks Chang-soo for a favor, and the next thing you know he, Butler Nam-chul, and Maid Yeon-soo are sitting with a gaggle of orphans at Ji-sook’s family’s restaurant, making arrangements for the family to provide food to the orphanage every week.
Chang-soo discusses it with Ji-sook on the phone, unaware that he’s being watched from several directions. Scar is in a car nearby eavesdropping, and Director Shim and his minion observe from a rooftop across the street. Shim is getting suspicious that someone is taking care of the family, saying that he smells big money.
The family comments that Min-woo and Ji-sook seems closer these days, but Min-woo plays it off as if her family would be upset if she got sick in their care. He proposes that she oversee the luxury goods department at the store, but Ji-sook declines and even gets a bit shrill, since that’s the department where she used to work.
In their room, Min-woo asks what the problem is, and Ji-sook fibs that she doesn’t know much about those things and isn’t confident. But if she’s not happy at the gallery with Mi-yeon, and doesn’t want to work at the department store, then what does she want to do? Min-woo says that she’s got to do something, or lose the respect of the family.
That night Mi-yeon broods over the photos of Seok-hoon with Eun-ha, and needles Seok-hoon by saying that she and Min-woo seems close and at this rate, will probably have a baby before they do. Seok-hoon doesn’t rise to the bait, but shows Mi-yeon a gift he got for her.
Over in Min-woo and Ji-sook’s room, Ji-sook says she’s better and can sleep on the couch again, but Min-woo invites her to keep sleeping on the bed with him. He pretends it’s for her comfort, then says it makes him the bad guy when she tries to go back to the couch. Finally he just pulls rank, and Ji-sook gives in.
But when he climbs in himself, Ji-sook is surprised — surely he doesn’t intend to sleep together? He reminds her that he only sees her as a rock (how romantic) so Ji-sook offers a compromise… they’ll sleep in this bed tonight, then tomorrow they’ll buy a second bed.
Hee, Ji-sook scoots so far away from Min-woo, she actually starts to tilt off the bed in her sleep. Min-woo catches her and pulls her back onto the bed, but then he can’t bring himself to stop touching her. Finally he lays back down close to her, and closes his eyes with a tiny smile on his lips.
And from his hidden camera, Seok-hoon watches this, and slams his computer closed. Though Min-woo is playing right into his trap, Seok-hoon can’t help but watch another video of Ji-sook pouring the tea he made her down the drain, and finds himself growing furious. He flings the laptop across the room, smashing it.
He’s startled to see that Min-woo’s father witnessed his outburst, but Dad assumes he’s upset over a business deal gone bad. He assures Seok-hoon that it’s nothing compared to the money he’s brought in, but Seok-hoon isn’t mollified.
He goes back to his room to find Mi-yeon about to open his gift, and he brings up the subject of divorce again. He assures her its not what he wants, and that he wants to be a good husband. Mi-yeon says she believes him even if it’s a lie, and she opens his gift to find a beautiful set of baby clothes.
Seok-hoon says that when they have a baby, they’ll be happy, and Mi-yeon falls for it hook, line, and sinker. She hugs him, and behind her back, his face takes on that frightening shark’s expression.
Ji-sook and Min-woo go shopping for a second bed, and hilariously Min-woo nixes every single one (allergic to mahogany, what??). Finally Min-woo calls a break for a short lunch meeting, inviting Ji-sook along. It’s the meeting with her jerkface classmate, who seems to be involved with the construction side of the new mall deal.
Before he arrives, Ji-sook and Min-woo get in a fight over the bed, Min-woo now insisting that his family will get the wrong (right?) idea if they buy a second bed. She pouts that she’ll just sleep on the couch then, but Min-woo barks that he’ll sleep on the couch, and spills his water on himself.
He leaves to clean himself off, and Ji-sook runs into Jerkface (okay fine, he has a name, Jung-tae — but he’s still a jerkface) in the hallway. She says he’s got the wrong lady, but he sneers at her that she’s sure moving up in the world. Ugh ugh ugh, he actually suggests they meet up regularly and he’ll give her money, and when she runs off he calls after her that she’ll need him when that other guy gets tired of her.
That other guy overhears this, and Jung-tae suggests they go someplace nicer. If by “nicer” you mean a sleazy room with lots of girls and alcohol, which grosses Min-woo out so much he actually flings the girls off of himself. He tells Jung-tae to get to the point, so Jung-tae just plunks a briefcase of money on the table. Subtlety is not this guy’s forte.
Min-woo smiles that bribery is against the law, and Jung-tae assumes he wants more money. Min-woo says there is something else he wants from him — not to work on his family’s buildings. He says that their buildings are cheaply made because they spend all their money on bribes. When Jung-tae wants to know why Min-woo is so antagonistic when they just met, Min-woo only says that he judges people on first impressions, and leaves.
Ji-sook goes to Seok-hoon’s office, saying that she came to thank him for the ginseng tea, but Seok-hoon knows that’s a lie. Ji-sook asks if he isn’t tired of living like this, and he admits that he is, but they’re in too deep to back out. Furthermore, if she keeps acting on her own, things will only get worse.
Seok-hoon says that if people find out she’s not Eun-ha, her family’s situation will get even worse than it was in the first place. He puts a hand on her shoulder to say that he’s the only person she can be honest with, not Min-woo.
Ji-sook stands outside her family’s restaurant later, holding the ginseng box full of cash. Inside Dad and Ji-hyuk are excited about the money coming in from the orphanage, but Mom is suspicious. She’s worried, saying that it feels like someone is helping them — and then she spies Ji-sook.
Mom runs outside but Ji-sook takes off, and Mom chases her until she finally trips and falls in the street. It kills Ji-sook to leave her, but she does. Mom has a coughing fit and coughs into her sleeve, then gapes at the blood that’s splattered there. Oh no.
Because Jerkface Jung-tae is an idiot as well as a jerkface, he approaches Seok-hoon next, who he knows from past legal dealings. They go to eat, and Jung-tae asks Seok-hoon what it is that Min-woo wants from him in order to keep his company as the builder.
He makes the mistake of mentioning that he used to “play around” with the woman Min-woo was with earlier, and that she seems so different now. Unsure if he means Ji-sook or Eun-ha, Seok-hoon asks her name, and Jung-tae asks Seok-hoon to dig up some dirt on her so they can help each other.
Jung-tae has poked the bear now, and when he goes out to his car after lunch, Seok-hoon takes off his belt and wraps it around his hands. He lifts the belt and runs towards Jung-tae to strangle him… but a passing car causes him to have to hide, saving Jung-tae’s life. For now.
That night Ji-sook apologizes to Min-woo for running off at lunch, and invites him to have a drink with her. They sit at the bar downstairs and open a bottle of wine, but Min-woo bypasses it for something stronger. Ji-sook offers to help Min-woo with whatever is bothering him, but her earlier words not to be nice to her echo in his head and he laughs at the contradiction.
He asks if this is how she gets what she wants from men, but seems to immediately regret his words. Ji-sook admits that he’s right, and pours herself some wine, but spills it when Min-woo says he overheard her and Jung-tae talking.
He says again that they promised not to get involved in each other’s private lives, and that he plans to forget what he heard. At that, Ji-sook admits that she has lots of secrets, and is wearing a mask. As she drinks more, she admits that living with a mask is lonely.
Min-woo says he’s wearing a mask too, but that everyone wears a mask. Ultimately, everyone is lonely, and it’s only difficult because they pretend otherwise. He and Ji-sook drink companionably, for once feeling comfortable together.
Ji-sook quotes a poem that basically says that when times are hard, you need someone beside you, and Min-woo says it’s one of his favorite poems. She stands to get more wine and stumbles, and Min-woo steadies her by the shoulders. But instead of letting go, he simply nods and folds her into his arms. For a long moment, Ji-sook allows him to hold her, and he tells her to cry if she needs to cry. She does, just a little, and lets herself relax into him.
When she finally pulls away, Min-woo tells Ji-sook tenderly that he doesn’t like her — he doesn’t like when she thanks him, when she sleeps on the couch, when she’s sick. And he doesn’t like when she’s with other men. He doesn’t like her expression, her eyes, or her lips. And then he can’t hold back anymore, and he kisses her.
Unaware that Seok-hoon is watching through the front door, Min-woo kisses Ji-sook for a long minute, then she pushes him away. Min-woo smiles wryly, and says that at least he got to say everything he needed to say, and now he’s gotten her response.
He starts to walk away, but Ji-sook stops him: “I am not Seo Eun-ha. I’m not the woman you married.” Min-woo asks who she is then, but she can only stammer, “I… My name is… “
COMMENTS
I’m surprised, in a good way, that it’s Min-woo who’s developing feelings for Ji-sook first. You would think that his lack of love in his life would make him more hesitant to open up to someone, but I can see how it could be the other way around — his lack of love pushes him to desperately want someone to care about, and to care about him. It’s sweet how much he truly seems to care about Ji-sook, and how proud he is of himself when he accomplishes something good like getting her healthy porridge or telling her to do something that makes her happy. I love the personality that’s coming out in him, and if things keep going this way, he’s going to be pretty irresistible very soon.
I’m also pleasantly surprised at how freaking adorable Min-woo is, because I never expected him to turn into this giggly, smiling, tell-her-I-don’t-love-her-so-there kind of guy. But I love it. He’s so endearingly grumpy when he tries to act like things like having Ji-sook sleep in the bed are for show or for her health, but it’s so obvious that he just likes her. That little smile when he went to sleep next to her was so very telling, that just being near her makes him happy. I wish she could see those moments, because I think that if she realized Min-woo was feeling this way, she wouldn’t be so resistant.
I can understand her feelings completely though, and I appreciate why she could hold herself back and keep reminding him that this is supposed to be a business arrangement. I honestly thought that Min-woo would be the one who would keep throwing that up between them, but I completely understand Ji-sook’s reasons for doing so. I don’t think she’s having much, if any, romantic feelings for him just yet (yes there was their waltz, but that’s really the only time she’s let herself look at him as a man), because she’s got so much else to worry about between her family, their debt, and trying not to get outed as an imposter. With all that to worry about, it makes complete sense for her to try to maintain the status quo in this marriage, and keep things platonic. I do think Ji-sook realizes that Min-woo is relaxing around her, but I don’t know if she sees that he’s having true feelings for her just yet.
But I’m glad that, if nothing else, the two of them are finding that they can lean on each other. The scene where they had drinks and shared a long comforting hug was such a sweet moment, and I hope it’s just the first of many. These two need someone to hold and trust, and if they can open up enough to let each other in, they’ll find that they’re so much stronger together than apart.
The one thing that’s really concerning me is Seok-hoon and his increasingly tenuous grip on reality. I’m still not entirely sure of his motivations beyond “don’t let Min-woo have control of the company,” though it’s unclear exactly why, or how planting Ji-sook as Min-woo’s wife is supposed to accomplish that. But it’s scary how Seok-hoon seems to be getting more and more emotionally invested, so that even as he gets what he wants — Min-woo becoming attracted to Ji-sook — it makes him more and more volatile. Yes, he’s getting closer to his goal, but I think he’s having a harder and harder time separating his feelings for Eun-ha with his feelings for Ji-sook, and seeing what looks like the woman he loved lying in bed with his enemy, is pushing him to erratic behavior. It’s getting worse, and I’m dreading it for Ji-sook’s sake, even as I’m looking forward to it as a viewer.

+1 I did too!
I've decided to suspend all logic and just watch and enjoy. Typically, I hate pointless makjangs. Mask, I plan to watch it complete ignorant bliss. I don't want (please add emphasis) to analyze or overthink it. I just want to be entertained and that's what it does when you marathon it. With that said, I don't know if I will watch another episode until closer to the finale. I think week to week would just drive me nuts.

I'm falling in love with Min woo. The more he falls in love with Ji Sook, the more I love him. Girl had better give him some encouragement. And just tell him who you are already! Pa-lee before Peeping Tom Psycho Voyeur finds a reason to stop you! Jebal!

I just cannot abide that ceiling camera over Min Woo's bed!!! Voyeur gets top down view!!! Poor Min Woo.... been watched maybe for years. Ji Sook should make a more concerted effort to find that camera or two (there was the other angle shot of her in the closet) and have some privacy....sheesh!

Seok Hoon prob thinks he is still a vampire. and with the illogical buildt of this drama, I wouldn´t be surprised if they make him one. Imagine: let´s add a few angry vengeful vampires who hate laptops into the mix, let´s have the wine the sister in law drinks also be blood, and let´s make the mother in law actually the boss of the gangsters. fun fun.
I stopped watching though. the heroine is such a pathetic weakling.
but Park Joon Geum is finally dressed worthy of a woman. room to evolve, but yay! no more circus poodle.

I am starting to hate what the writer and director have done with our heroine. I should have expected it though - this seems to happen in nearly every k-drama - I guess it is that "men and women are equal but Korean women have to be doormats" thing yet again.
Time after time I have seen dramas start off with a strong female lead, and about halfway through she turns into some stupid pile of whimpering Jello. I had really hoped this one would be different, coming from the writer of Secret and Director of Queen of Ambition.

Su Ae has been called up to do nothing but look sad, scared, and helpless.
What is she doing dressed to the nine's, wearing that big hat and those sun glasses walking thru her old neighbourhood? Does she want to avoid being seen or does she want to be conspicuous? Is she stupid or is the PD nim not thinking things thru?
And then she tries to tell him she is not who he thinks she is, right there in the middle of the living room, where the bar is close to the main entrance. I know she is tipsy, but still...

Apart from the directorial mistake (or not, regarding the usual drama code and the right amount of eavesdropping and evil second leads, lol ) you're referring to, JS's already gone too far considering her real personality.
She's a woman who used to tune out the moment things were getting really diffcult (on The Blue Danube's happy notesfor that matter) or to turn her back and start running away. Using a few familiar developments plot-wise, the writer has evolved his heroine to a certain point in ep. 7 and a bit further in ep.8.
If Secret could be a rough guide-line, I'd say SA's character in this drama will go the whole nine yards, just like HJE's did in Secret.

Oh you stopped watching that sad but your choice...
....
As far as i'm concerned, i'm surprisingly enjoying it more than i thought i would. I like the pace, the actors are great ❤ the dialogue, the OST are so good plus the leads have awesome chemistry what's not to love :) I'm sorry you feel that way but i don't find the heroine pathetic at all it's not easy to be on her shoes and bear her burdens just give the poor woman a break! We are still not even halfway through it so wait until we reach episode 10....She's already brave and talks back to Seok Hoon whenever she get the chance to! so i believe she will soon be in fierce mode once she drops her mask completely of course...just be patient ^^

yeah, I think Seok Hoon got creepier when you'd think it's impossible to be any creepier than he already is, just wait till he reveals himself as a reincarnation of Raskolinkov next episode. But i gotta say that these two characters are in fact really similar, well done writers with his charaterization :)
as for Jisook, a lot of people complain that she lost her backbone in these latest episodes and couldn't stand up for herself, but I understand her behaving like that, imagine being 'virtually' dead, cosplaying as someone else's daughter and wife, living with the psycho murdurer and his malicious wife under the same roof, not to forget about her own family issues and debt, everyone would surrender and feel overwhelmed in a situatuon like that.
That's why her realtionship with Minwoo may become a source of strenght in this unfair struggle with Seok Hoon
Also his "I don't like your..." were so swoon-inducing, like it was the most romantic confession I've heard in a drama since forever, even though you knew it was going to end with "I don't like your lips".
PS. Anticipate more romantic moments with a creepy stalker watching you from afar, Minwoo and Jisook.

I find Seok Hoon so much more interesting to watch than Min-woo and I actually find his dangerous chemistry with Eun-Ha/Ji-sook to be more exciting. I know it's pretty much impossible but I wish they were the main couple :( Like it's to the point I want to ff Min-woo's scenes but I watch Seok-hoon's scenes with bated breath. I think it's partially to the credit of the actor, who is so good being the villain. Yeah, sure, the main romance is cute but in a melodrama, I don't want it to be cute...that's what other romcoms are for. I want it to be intense (that's why I liked Secret). Reasonably, not in RL but it's a drama for a reason.

I find Seok-hoon fascinating as a villain and I love his scenes with Ji-sook. They definitely have great chemistry, but it's not the kind that makes me ship them romantically. I'm more eager for the moment when he brings about his own downfall by trying to use her, while falling deeper and deeper for her at the same time. I may love him as a character, but that doesn't mean I don't want him to experience the consequences of his choices, no matter how much I understand why he made them. I'm excited to watch how the relationship continues to play out.
It's actually Min-woo who endears me the most though so I adore his scenes just as much. He's still the character out of all of them that I most want to see happy. I actually like the sweet touch he adds to an otherwise crazy melodrama. It makes everything more accessible for me.
Sure, it's a unique choice for a melodrama to have rom-com-like scenes, but I actually find it refreshing. Especially since I think these scenes actually serve a narrative purpose in this case. This struggle of his, of desperately wanting and needing someone he loves and trusts in a world where everyone is conspiring against him--that just resonates with me. So the scenes with him and Ji-sook (who also wants a normal life) just melt my heart. And I think the reason these scenes have such an effect on me is precisely because it's a melodrama. It'll be these sweet moments that eventually drive the leads to fight for the life they want and I love that.

@ Chandler
I agree with many things you say here.
I believe already we are starting to see that he is making decisions that will lead to his downfall, "while falling deeper and deeper for her at the same time." It is so deliciously appropriate, even satisfying, I suppose, that the one who wants to be so much in control is brought down by the one he is using and manipulating and by his own self.
I like that this show is allowing us to understand his character and that he is not a cardboard villain but somehow human, with needs and weaknesses.
"It’s actually Min-woo who endears me the most..."
From the beginning I felt sorry for Min Woo... so much was stacked against him by his 'nearest and dearest'. He is or was another victim of manipulation and I thought the story would play out so that Ji Sook would save him from his evil family. However that aspect of the threat to Min Woo seems to have been dropped for now, so the tension is no longer there. Still he is a lovable character, who is not really wearing much of a mask (except with dad and mum maybe) and is wearing his heart on his sleeve. :)
And I definitely like how the funny works well with the melo in this show. There were so many fails in this in other shows (My Secret Hotel, TGWSS) but here, it does not detract from the focus but gives more flavor to the whole.
I'm looking forward to our OTP team up (wish Ji Hyuk would join in too) to succeed in finding justice, family and happiness, without a mask.

Seok Hoon is such an enigma, his shell is hard to crack, and he has so much layers: 1) jealousy, 2) ambition, 3) fear, 4) drive, 5) hard-work, 6) shadiness, and 7) sacrifice.
He is jealous of Ji Sook, even though he's not aware of it yet. However, his ambition stops him from stopping Ji Sook. His ambition is so engulfing, he was even willing to send his lover Eun Ha to the arms of his enemy as prey, but he was sure of Eun Ha's heart and her unwavering love for him. On the other hand, he can't be sure of Ji Sook's heart. He is scared that where her heart lies, there might lie her loyalty, in which case he would lose his chess piece. He's driven with something yet e don't know what it is, even though it is obvious that he needs money, big sum of money desperately for that. Otherwise, he wouldn't have left his district attorney position, which could have provided him with the much needed power. This means what he drives him is something more than power and prestige. Whatever it is though, it is obvious that it costs him hard-work, which does not only consist of only doing hard work cleanly but also some shady business. He is even willing to sacrifice himself and offer his body to a soulless, deceptive, toxic marriage, where he obviously has the upper hand but no happiness.
I appreciate his character as he is not a cardboard cut out villain, so I really love his character to pieces. Yet, I am eagerly waiting for the good guys team up and have the upper hand. Guess, I will have to admire our intriguing villain some more. ;)

I also like Seok-hoon as a character. He is so deliciously dark and tormented, a real Heathcliff-type. Unfortunately he is rapidly moving from the tragic anti-hero with a dark past category to the serial killer with an agenda category. He is really racking up the old body count or he seems to be trying if not succeeding. I wouldn't wish that on even the most vapid scaredy-cat heroine with a terminal case of the dreads.
That said, I'm still not convinced that Min-woo fits the bill. He isn't exactly your stereotypical romantic hero what with all his issues and he seems to have an agenda as well. So I'm not sure he's the guy for Ji-sook either. Maybe she should end up with Min-woo's secretary. He seems like a sweet guy.

Lindy12, I'm surprised you think that Minwoo also has an agenda? I didn't get that vibe. The only thing I get from him, is that he is trying to prove his (innocence of being a psycho) and at the same time, trying to please his father in inheriting the company. Normal goals, except for his paranoia of who to trust.
But, I truly feel he is such a sweet person, who longs to love and be loved. :)

I'm going to be a little dense for a second. Is Seok Hoon reacting like that because he's envisioning the real Eun Ha? In other words, is he jealous of Min Wook and Ji Sook because he sees Ji Sook as Eun Ha?

Seok-hoon never confused SeunHa with Ji Sook from day one...maybe the necklace might have triggered some fond memories but he took it away. He is simply falling for the lady... maybe he doesn't realize it but his jealousy gives it away. Probably them looking similar reminded him of his lost love but at this point he well addresses Ji Sook as her... The man is in love again...

I think the answer to your question lies in the next episode. Seok Hoon sees Ji Sook as his creation. He's as much as told her that without him she wouldn't be alive. He brought her back to life and made her Min woo's wife and an heiress. So she had better not forget it. I guess his emotions could be summed up like this: while he loved Eun Ha, Ji Sook as Eun ha is his possession, he deserves her absolute loyalty and she must obey his every order. The fact that she acts on her own instincts drives him mad! So his jealousy is not motivated by love, but other emotions.

I really like this drama - it's kind of a guilty pleasure.
Loved the meta scene Choi Mi-Yeon riffing on Lee Jae-Kyung's speech to Han Sun-Young in My Love from a Star.
There's one thing that's really bothering me though - Soo-Ae's performance isn't consistent. I'd like to see more of Byeon Ji-Sook trying to be Seo Eun-Ha. Right now I feel like she's created an entirely new character - let's call her Melanie bc she reminds me of that doormat character in Gone with the Wind.

With her behaviour she is driving me crazy as well, but let's not call her doormat yet, let's just assume that she is being dormant at this stage, waiting to be walked all over and pushed into a corner heading down the road of no return, which she can reverse big time if she gets a wake-up call by seeing a family member in danger.

oh my that trainwreck of a drama, wish you didn't remind anyone of it, but gotta agree, Hyun Bin was the only light between the darkness of HJM..
and I think what you all mean, these last few episodes Soo Ae seemed to over.. overpathetize Jisook, if you know what I mean. For example, she rarely makes eye contact with anyone, seem to has her head set to hang down, actually she doesn't even talk that much. I just don't know if this is done purposely because it's like that in the script or this is her own personal portrayal of her.
I think for now we can blame on Jisook's felling of being lost among the evil wolves, I think she starts to strenghten up in episode 8, but I'll keep my thoughts to myself till recap of it appears.

I am not sure what her problem is, but her character has definitely gone downhill on the hero scale lately. I suspect directing more than acting, as a few scenes were just kind of dumb - like her showing up around parents store all dressed to kill with huge dark glasses (yeah, nobody would ever notice...). I am sure that was not the actresses choice.

You know I had such high hopes for her back in episode 1 where she was dancing to beautiful music in her head while being scolded. She struck me as a strong female. I hate how timid she's become. How her deception hasn't been found out is beyond me. First, she needs to stand up to Brother-in-law, the creep, because without her, he's got no plans. I'm hopeful there would be a turnaround soon.

How tuning-out is close to being strong?? I can't get it. Though I like Johann Strauss' The Blue Danube, it sounds more like a rush escape than standing up for herself. Even if she's still unable to make eye contact, at least she's getting a little more active. She has to make choices, struggle harder and face her "demons" now. I'm not sure how JS's old self could have managed to survive. Maybe when she "died" she really did!

Maybe that's not totally unintentional script- and directing-wise. A third personality was "born" when both women "died". The person that got married to MW and lives with him in his bedroom (& his mind, too lol) is neither one of them; it really is a third woman who apart from the same face carries some fragments of both the personalities along with lots of new ones. Just throwing in my two cents' worth...;-)

Awww Min-woo, he is a cutie.
I was very patient with Ji-sook, until this episode i thought "ok, she is stressed, with a crazy dude following her every move and her family in danger" but my patiance is dying little by little. I understand that she is worried for her family, all i ask, for starters, its for she to stop showing every emotion on her face. When Jung-tae talked to her she should pretend a little. Maybe he wouldnt buy it, but at least that would make him doubt. I dont know, I just want her to do SOMETHING, she keeps doing the same for the last episodes.

Seok Hoon is interesting, I admit. The actor is just amazing, showing all the subtle changes in expression (his character is all about those), also those sudden outbursts. And he keeps getting better and better, as his feelings start to overtake him, making him do mistakes. But as for him and Ji Sook I don't really see them 'that' way. No doubt there is a very tense feeling, even strange chemistry between them. I like me some twisted relationships but with this one I can't get myself into it. If they were on the same level, with her being as cunning and bold as he is (like I don't know, maybe bitchslaping him again?) it would get more juicy. But she looks so intimidated! No hot feels in there, sorry.
And I just love how adorable Min Woo becomes so much that I can't help it, I have to see him more (and more, and more...). The way he opens up and his budding feelings are so awesome to look at (seriously, I can watch his goofy smile forever). And now I'm even more eager to see them teaming up, with him knowing her true identity. And more laptop throwing. And possibly more kisses. Definitely more kisses.

I've never really been into makjangs and melodrama but damn I caved in and started watching this after reading a few recaps. Min Woo is just adorable especially how he's starting to fall for Ji Soo, he's a nice breathe of fresh air from all those intense scenes with Seok Hoon.
Speaking of Seok Hoon, he's horrible but like deliciously evil in a good way??? I really love his scenes, it's the first time I've seen the actor and I just love his portrayal. Whenever he's with Mi Yeon it reminds me of him playing with a kitten. One thing I don't like is how he's always pulling the divorce card, and admitting to his wrong every single time. It makes him look like the victim when really he isn't, it seems like emotional manipulation to me. When Mi Yeon says she'll believe his lies it made me realise she's probably equally starved for love like Min woo, but they both hide it behind their shells.
And lastly yes to Ji Soo growing a backbone please, can't wait for to start standing up for herself more. Thanks for the recap!

I also find MW's goofy swoony self so endearing and sweet. Love his small smiles that JS hasn't noticed yet. Whether it's taking care of her, sleeping on the bed, looking for a second bed, and the end scene with them drinking and opening up to each other, I really like how they are learning that they can lean on one another. I was especially touched when MW pulled JS close and offered himself as the one whose chest she can cry on. And I love all his "dislikes" about her, which shows how much he cares and how much he's drawn to her. Hope to see more scenes like these and that JS can finally side with MW and forget about SH's control and orders.
SH is very good as the villain, and the more he sees JS and MW getting close, the angrier and more jealous he gets. Flinging that laptop and those dagger eyes at the end... *shudder* In a sense, he's setting himself up for his own downfall. He can't truly control JS and he's falling for her.

I loveeeeeeeeeeeeee this drama, and I feel like I say this in every Episode recap of it lol :D
Seok Hoon is such a superb actor, to be a villan, and still make me cheer for him for his evil plans lol. My heart literally flutters for this guy, I love how he is confusingly in love with Jisook. It seems he had a long love story with the real Eunha and it is hard to forget her. The way he is getting jealous is really amazing, and I think it's not only because he is possessive of her but because she also reminds him of the girl he truly loved.
Minwoo is on another level of awesomeness, and I really wish he can figure out everything about her before it's too late. I love his character so much, and my poor heart can't take how much he is falling so much in love with her, and allowing himself to be in close proximity of her, even with all of his ocd antics.

Hello my dear! I feel the same way about this show. :)
Among the many love triangle tropes, this is one of my favourites!!! Poor girl ... at first an unwilling husband who becomes a willing lover... whom she cannot afford to reveal too much to, and now the murderous villain who is using her, but also falling for her against his will.... and therefore who will probably give her a hard time in his jealousy. I'm not surprised to see that befuddled look on her face. LOL!
I did not expect to like Joo Ji Hoon after his stiff performance in Goong,... but he is wonderful here. The right amount of still being stiff but beginning to bend, so openly admiring, bravely confessing his 'dislike'... so refreshing (after things like Warm and Cozy!) aware of his rights as husband and yet respectful of JI Sook. I like that in his character.
Most swoonworthy moment - when he watched her sleep and respectfully stopped touching her but put his head on her pillow and closed his eyes contentedly. *SIGH* :D

I mean he was a very very forgettable performance in GOONG, if I had to point him out of other actors, I wouldn't even remember his face or anything about his character. But, here in MASK, he literally shines. He has really developed as an actor, and I love all his facial expressions, from being crazy, jealous, loving, etc is just beautiful.

Thanks so much LollyPip! Your recap brought out more nuances and things that I missed. :)
What I thoroughly enjoyed in this episode was Seok Hoon's one-up-manship attempts the more jealous he got of Min Woo.
If Min Woo got Ji Sook breakfast, then Seok Hoon would bring her ginseng tea and loads of money.
Since Min Woo got close to Ji Sook, Seok Hoon must needs put his hands on her shoulder and lean in close to say that it's only with him (meaning not with Min Woo) that she can be herself.
Seok Hoon is so evil and focused on what he wants, yet so human and conflicted. He is the manipulator but he has no absolute control of Ji Sook, who is his point of weakness. He made her but does not own her, he cannot do without her, but she is not his. Fantastic conflict! Yeon Jung Hoon plays the role so well! I cannot approve his character, but cannot help but be fascinated by him and still wish him not just punishment but also redemption.

GB you nailed his character perfectly :D
His character is so complex, and such a joy to watch this actor in action. His jealousy is fascinating, because he is unaware of the dangerous road that it's leading him to. He is also unaware that he feels jealous, because he thinks it's only "possessiveness to control her" that is making him act crazy. But, I really believe he is confused between his love for Euhna, seeing her with Minwoo, is driving him crazy. And I always remember what he told her in the beginning..."Love is a hopeless emotion, because it will lead to a person's downfall..." or something along those lines. It's interesting to see the irony.
I loved the reference of "Crime and Punishment" (one of my favorite books), and how he implies it to himself.

Thanks for the recap LollyPip. Mask - what a satisfying 2 hours of tv each week. My excitement for new episodes is strong with this drama...it's like I can't get enough of it. Even before the episode starts, I'm engrossed in the characters and story, the tension, nuggets of comedy and skinship, the twists, turns, and ending climaxes.
I just love to hear Min-Woo utter Eun-Ha's name. Watching MW fall for Ji-Sook and try to find ways to mask expressing his feelings for her is golden. Thoroughly enjoying the chemistry of the main leads (MW, JS as EH, SH, & MY). The acting by Yeon Jeong-Hun as Min Seok-Hoon is a wonder to behold. Seok-Hoon's villainous nature, calculating mind, and wily behavior is truly a force to be reckoned with and icing on the cake for viewers. So often the villain/evil mastermind falls short execution wise, operates with a laughable and questionable skillset, and is rendered serviceable by stupidity.
The unstoppable current of makjang and melodrama elements ahead are sweeping me further and further in. I know it will be a wild ride and treacherous journey. But right now, I'm too hynoptized by Mask to jump off the train. So much so, that I've succumbed to watching it raw and then rewatching it again once it's fully subbed.
What's next? All I know is that whatever it is, I'm fully invested in and anticipating the remaining 13 episodes.

Here's to toast: Watching it raw, and then watching it subbed. That is what Mask is all about. Oh honestly I wasn't expecting all this goodness from Mask. I am glad this drama exists to atone for all the ugliness and foolish scars I have encountered in another airing drama that I wish not to mention. If hype was a thing of the past and present, Mask deserves to be a 100% recipient.

The villain is probably the only reason I continue to watch this drama. When he turns on the intensity, Yeon Jung-hoon's stage charisma is palpable. And his Machiavellian soliloques are epic.

Love ? this show, can't believe how fast the subs are coming out, it's the fast I've seen of full subs out the very day the show airs,I'm grateful. This show is so crazy I messed up my sleep schedule this week waiting for subs, now i can't go to bed before 5am. Although after episode 8 I think I'll be able to stay away from soompi and watching it till the next day because for some reason I didn't feel the thrill and urge to rewatch it immediately and I only called the Villan, satan once.which says alot as I called him satan like 20 times per episode. Maybe it's because he's now less evil and just Loco.

Hello @turkishrose, @sumee, @Chandler, @kdaddict JCW and @growingbeautifully!
Here we are again - loving a drama. This one has me totally hooked and Im loving every minute - already have seen episode 8 and OMG!! I'm not quite at the point where I was when watching Healer live, raw and unsubbed as it was actually being broadcast in Korea but I'm willing to watch Mask un-subbed just to watch their facial expressions. This is a smart, dark, well-written and beautifully acted drama and I am loving the OTP - pulling for them all the way. Glad to join you here!

Hello there!!! Soo goood to see you and the show is soooo gooood too!:)
I confess that I did actually watch the un-subbed version of Mask, Episode 8 only... I did not have time to watch it slowly so FFed it but it was enough to keep me from tearing my hair out in anticipation while waiting for the subs. LOL!
I'm not as obsessed with this show as I was with Healer, but it's quite close!
Regardless of the opinions that abound, I am also loving all the main and even the supporting actors in this show. I feel there are circumstances that make it entirely plausible for each person to act differently or in the way they do, and so take no issue with their characterization (at the moment).
BTW, I've been meaning to ask you... did you see my email and the link to the Healer poll? Come and vote and have fun walking down Healer memory lane!! :)

Though I still cant find the logic of SH's plan to plant JS as EH, (yea that bothers me), I admit I am enjoying it. I may have said it before somewhere that SH reminds me the secretary in "Nice Guy". SH has started the whole evil plan, now falling for JS and ultimately would be fall guy.
Because only in 7th episode, Min Woo fell in love and because it came from the SECRET writer, he may find out soon about JS and alliance with SH and another revenge story may start.

"Jung-tae has poked the bear now, and when he goes out to his car after lunch, Seok-hoon takes off his belt and wraps it around his hands. He lifts the belt and runs towards Jung-tae to strangle him… but a passing car causes him to have to hide, saving Jung-tae’s life. For now."
During this scene, as the camera panned to follow Yeon Jeong-Hun stealthily approaching and ambushing Jung-Tae, flashbacks to, glimpses of, and remnants of his past Vampire Prosecutor character Min Tae-Yeon surfaced to mind.

Am I the only one who also loves JS and MY??? I think MY legitimacy loves him and his feelings for her confuse me. Sometimes I think he feels a very small amount for her (eg: when he kissed her after they basically insulted each other in episode 1, or last episode when he kept kissing her even though his cell phone was ringing) and i just so determined to gain power he lets himself be taken over versus showing who he really is to her. The near-strangling has me convinced that it was Seok-hoon who killed the real Eun-ha in a psychotic fit of rage. (It might not even have had anything to do with her, he's that dangerous.) Not that I ever suspected Min-woo for a minute!
Also, Jung-tae is scum and deserves to be punished for being such an a-hole to Ji-sook. I don't just mean losing out on the construction deal - this is personal!

@ h311ybean
You are referring to the earlier episode where Seok Ho strangled-almost Ji Sook?
The problem with your idea is that the real Eun Ha drowned before anything else... so he had no cause to be in a fit of rage and strangle her when she was brain dead anyway. Someone did drug the wine that she and Min Woo drank (it affected Min Woo's memory of that drowning and he has a thing about drowned people floating in water so he cannot recall accurately) so someone was out to do something to them but I'm not sure that killing was the aim. Min Woo was too drugged to even help himself let alone kill anyone. So he's definitely innocent.
The big hole (plot hole maybe?) is how she came to end up in the water. Also there were maids just standing around and screaming but not getting or giving help. That was a big contrivance so that it was only SH who did the saving.
Jung Tae is the only person I am evil-ly happy to wish dead. I usually don't want people to be killed, but he is so (well acted) disgusting, so full of himself and hateful in his attitude towards women that I want the show to be rid of him. :)

Hi there! I was talking about the almost-strangling of Jung-tae in the parking lot in this episode, but thanks for the reminder about that other incident, and for refreshing my memory that Eun-ha didn't die at the pool.
I'm still convinced that Seok-hoon was somehow involved in the real Eun-ha's accident. It's clear he was (still is?) obsessed with her, which may have led him to do some crazy things when she was preparing to marry Min-woo. I have no idea why he drugged the wine and what else he might have done, but after I know that Seok-hoon is capable of anything!
At any rate, I hope the mystery gets fully cleared up in the show!
PS Totally agree that Jo Han-sun is doing an excellent job playing Jung-tae. Characters like that are so much fun to hate!

Maybe i'm the only one who doesn't enjoy the fluffy romance which seems to be the trend these recent episodes. I find it weird that MW would fall head over heel over JS so fast. But perhaps it is just my dislike for romcom manisfests itself.
Speaking of JS, i get that she has a reason to act meek and timid in front of MW and his family, but why does she have to be like that in front of that jerk? Maybe she's afraid of getting caught being an imposter, but behaving like that only make him and anyone else suspect sth is wrong. How dumb, she used to be better.
I'm only curious about SH's intention and reason for being so twisted. Hope the show gets back on its feet and be the wonderful one that drew me in again.

I get why people are frustrated with Ji Sook's "backbone," but for some reason I cut her a lot of slack. Aside from physically assaulting and attempting to kill her, the guy who got her into this mess is going even crazier. Pretty much her every move with her husband is under surveillance (oh the creepy of that front door scene). Her female in-laws hate her and don't hide it. Her family is going through a terrible time and she can't contact them. And while Min Woo is mellowing, he's been or being drugged.
Honestly, I would run screaming from this wtfery. It could be that my kdrama standards are getting lower, but I get the fear and stress she's feeling. As frustrating as it makes the plot at times, it seems realistic to me.

I agree 100%. She doesn't have any kind of safety net right now; she can't go back to her family (and she thinks she'll be arrested as a murderer), she's lying to Minwoo, her friends all think she's dead too. She feels terrified and helpless in a strange family, one member of which is a murderer. I'd be trying to keep my head down as well.

Yes @dramaqueen4 and @dahlia
I've been saying this too in previous recaps, which is why Ji Sook's meekness does not bother me that much. She can get up to answer back at an appropriate time or to take matters into her own hands if she thinks she must. But she has to balance this out with the threat to what could happen to her family and to herself if she does what she wants.
I was thinking it will be an added source of Seok Hoon's control over her, as she comes to care for Min Woo, where Seok Hoon's jealousy makes him threaten to hurt Min Woo too, unless she complies with him. Poor girl!!! :)

Part of me really wants for Suk-won to fully discover that he has feelings for Ji-sook. Not because she resembles Eun-ha, though that became the jumping board. Let us say he becomes possessive of Ji-sook, and Ji-sook pushes him away more and more-- We could witness a radical change right there. Oooh. A jealous Min-woo. Why not? Great chemistry Min-woo and Ji-sook shan't be wasted. (Though Suk-won and and Ji-sook have chemistry too, lol, that evil kind falling for a gentle angel)

Mask is so good that I just had to forget everything else. As time passes by I am convinced that this is the only airing drama worth my time. This drama is true gold. How l-dramas have missed writing dramas with this kind of style. Ah, so fresh and so gripping. I love Mask. It is so fine. (Thinking that I am not a fan of all Main Actors and Actresses. Now rethinking of really rewatching all of their dramas in a different light.) Joo is such a tease. His expressions. And Soo Ae is a delight. How come I have not been fond of her all these years? Byun Ji-sook is simple an angel. And Suk-won ssi? I need no words. He is a dazzle. And an evil monster who radiates fear and torment just by his vicious words. I am falling in-love with Yeon Jung-hoon more. As if he wasn't hot enough as the Vampire Prosecutor? Ha. Maybe I will rewatch Snow White (I still ship Lee Wan okay) to refresh myself that Yeon Jung-hoon is just ACTING and can be a good boy. If these first 8 episodes are proof of the brilliance of the writing, directing and acting, we are in for quite a ride as the story progresses. I haven't been surprised and delighted by a drama since Healer (and Misaeng before that) and the unexpected twists and turns in Mask are pure entertainment in my opinion. That is the thing that is puzzling quite a number of us. The question of why Seok Hoon is bothering with the charade of the false Eun Ha is at the heart of the show. It makes us question what Seok Hoon is really after. How does having Eun Ha in that place help him.
We need to believe that the writers have a good idea of their plot and conclusion and I hope they start revealing more to keep more of us invested in this show. :)

I too would like to have more of the suspenseful scenes that we had in the first 2 episodes. Those were a real draw with so much promise.
Bring back more of Scar Henchman with his chilling stare, bring back horrid doctor and 2-timing secretary who is really serving Seok Hoon while pretending to help Min Woo. The drugging of drinks seems to have stopped too. I want Min Woo to discover how he's been played and to surmount and defeat those villains. But they kinda disappeared. So I'm waiting to see what else the story has in store. :)

I think Suk Won and his MIL were scheming around in the first 2 episodes on Min Woo so this would make him appear poor in mental health and would be one of the main reason for him trying to kill Eun Ha. This in itself could be an incriminating reason for putting Min Woo behind bars as he wanted to be the next immediate heir to his father's company and causing him mental distress to hallucinate.
My assumption is Suk Won's plan backfired with Eun Ha going into coma. Maybe Suk Won instructed Scar to drown her but it didn't go out the way he planned. So now if anymore of this backfiring happens it could lead to an immediate death of either Ji Sook / Min Woo and in an indirect way put the blame on the family (prominent witness could be the servants and Chang Soo). Suk Won's luck was he could find a doppelganger for Eun Ha so that his plan could run in motion.
I think the writer has tied all loose ends. It is just waiting to be played out in the next coming episodes. I don't how much more patient could I be?

I think the show needs to move on from the whole Ji Sook missing her family and the debt that is forever looming over their heads. We got it, okay? Can we now move on to Seok Hoon's master plan of destroying Min Woo with Seo Eun Ha as his accomplice? Wasn't that the whole point of Ji Sook wearing a "Mask," which is the title of this show?
As much as I am frustrated with Ji Sook not actively trying to be Seo Eun Ha, I am also bothered by the fact that Seok Hoon doesn't seem entirely concerned by her lack of efforts either. I almost expected Seok Hoon to yell at her for giving herself away in front of Jung Tae.
But then on the other hand, Seok Hoon has not given Ji Sook any incentives to make her try harder. So far he has not come through with anything that he said he will do like pay off her family's debt. He already lied about finding her mother when she went missing and as Ji Sook put it did nothing but threaten her. He needs to change his tactics in dealing with her so that he can enlist her cooperation. You get more bees with honey than vinegar. He needs to give her hope to light a fire under her.
I think he should just pay the debt to pacify Ji Sook at least a little so that he can dangle a bigger carrot in front of her. If she helps out with his plan by being Seo Eun Ha (I mean really try), he will destroy the evidence of her being a "murderer" and she can return to her family because that is the one thing that Ji Sook wants more than anything right now. He obviously knows her family is her Achilles, but I think the stakes can be bigger so that our heroine actually has some motivation to do the damn thing that is suppose to serve the main plot.
Seok Hoon is more interesting when he is being manipulative and suave instead of the full blown threatening villain mode. I almost enjoy watching the way he handles Mi Yeon more than how he handles Ji Sook.

I am getting so frustrated with Ji-sook. I can literally rant about how her character has no motivation and how she is getting nothing out of this whole fraud deal but the thing that irks me the most is her conversational skills. How can Ji-sook talk to anyone without looking them in the eyes and apologizing every five minutes. When did she develop this social disorder? And why isn't anybody else calling her out on it. This is like key signs that someone is lying or hiding something. She literally can't string two sentences together in any given conversation.

43 I HATE JISOOK BUT I'LL WATCH THIS DRAMA

Really...
This is the first time I watch a drama and has urgency wants to strangle the heroine.
The heroine in the first episode made me fall in love, then after the story continue, I just really wish she really died at the cliff and broken into pieces. The actress only got paid for crying, stammering, crying again, stupidly wandering to her family again (where she knows to keep them safe she shouldn't show up), rejecting the Hero and crying again... repeat the cycle..
Seok Heon and Min Yeon story what keeps me in this drama. I just keep saying in my head that this drama is about a wife whose husband cheated on her and let his wench marry her own half brother. Min Woo? He is the poor brother. Jin Sook? Nice to have character to pose as MW's wife.
I have symphaty more with you Min Yeon! I will watch this only for your plot and I don't even care if Ji sook or eun ha die again for the 2nd time. Trashy heroine deserve tragic ending.
Thanks for the recap!! :D
